In 1940s Brooklyn, friendship between an 11-year-old Irish Catholic boy and an elderly Jewish rabbi might seem as unlikely as, well, snow in August. But the relationship between young Michael Devlin and Rabbi Judah Hirsch is only one of the many miracles large and small contained in Pete Hamill's novel. Michael finds himself in trouble when he witnesses the 17-year-old leader of the dreaded Falcons gang beating an elderly shopkeeper. For Michael, 1940s Brooklyn is a world still shaped by life in the Old Country, a world where informing on a fellow Irishman is the worst crime imaginable--worse even than the violent crimes committed by some of those fellows. So Michael keeps silent, finding solace in the company of Rabbi Hirsch, a Czech refuge whom he meets by chance. From this serendipitous beginning blossoms a unique friendship--one that proves perilous to both when the Falcons catch up with them.
Interlaced with Hamill's realistic descriptions of violence and fear are scenes of remarkable poignancy: the rabbi's first baseball game, where he sees Jackie Robinson play for the Dodgers; Michael's introduction into the mystical world of the Cabbala and the book's miraculous ending. Hamill is not a lyrical writer, but he is a heartfelt one, and this story of courage in the face of great odds is one of his best.

Customer Reviews:
Is snow in August possible?.......2007-10-01
Snow in the month of August seems impossible: overcoming evil seems impossible too. And yet the story turns the impossible into redemptive hope, hope that triumphs against pessimism, hope that allows for simple moments of human goodness. Pete Hamill's Snow in August is a morality tale set in the 1940's. It pits good against evil, courage against fear. The protagonist, Michael Devlin, an eleven year old in search of answers to immorality he sees on Brooklyn streets, wants to live a heroic life; he wants to do the right thing. But when he watches Frankie McCarthy violently attack Mr. G, a Jew who has defended Michael and his friends, Michael freezes beneath Frankie's ruthless intimidation. Anti-Semitic hatred reigns. Michael's own weakness shames him.
Hamill gets into the mind of Michael Devlin. He gives us Michael's rational thoughts suffused with boyish fantasy. Reality and fantasy intermingle as Michael looks to mythic stories for answers, stories that explain how to live in the world with dignity. He feeds his imagination with comic supermen who prevail in spite of peril. Shazam stands against evil. He listens to his mother's tales of Irish heroes' boldness in the face of attack. He looks at the uniformed photo of his father who gave his life in WWII. He looks to Jackie Robinson the first Negro to play for the Dodgers. These stories feed his imagination but don't help him on the street. Where are living heroes? He looks to his friends Sonny and Jimmy, but knows they are as clueless as he is. Frankie McCarthy rules the neighborhood with hatred, knives and guns. Violence escalates against Michael, his mother, and Michael's new friend Rabbi Hirsch. The street code is silence. Evil prevails; Michael watches the weak go down in scary silence.
Michael yearns for friendship. With Sonny and Jimmy their motto had been one for all and all for one. But when Mr. G. was attacked Sonny and Jimmy left Michael standing alone. Is that one for all and all for one? Michael's relationship with Rabbi Hirsch brings friendship to a new dimension. Their friendship is solid, reciprocal, respectful, moving both forward to greater consciousness and humanity. The association between Rabbi Hirsch, whose struggles with evil wrought by the Holocaust have left him fragile, and Michael, an altar boy who is just beginning to see evil and understand his own limitation, is life affirming. Rabbi Hirsch learns English and baseball from Michael. Michael learns Yiddish and history from Rabbi Hirsch. Both make sacrifices to maintain friendship in spite of iniquity around them. And in spite of the cold streets they enjoy moments of joy--tickets to the Dodgers game to watch their hero Jackie Robinson. They laugh, they sing, they commiserate.
Hamill expresses a deeply cynical world; the self-interested players are capable of awful violence. Pessimism permeates the scenes. Is cynicism the only response to the evil world Hamill acknowledges? In an interview Dan Schneider asked Pete Hamill what his purpose was for writing (http://www.cosmoetica.com/DSI3.htm)? Hamill replied: "Stating a goal would sound pompous, and I have no slogan posted above my desk. As any writer grows older the goals are always shifting. But I suppose that in my journalism and my fiction, I've tried hard to make the world more human."
Snow in August recognizes evil, but holds on to goodness. Hamill erases cynicism when the rabbi and the altar boy go to the baseball game together. The world becomes beautifully human. Michael Devlin's Golem fantasy at the end of the novel supports the possibility of poetic goodness with boyish triumph.
Vulgar Profanity Poor Literature .......2007-08-16
Vulgar Profanity Poor Literature
The attempt to write a story around a troubled youth is completely lost with the prolific use of every vulgar profanity possible which is peppered throughout the text. The skewed implementation of the Roman Catholic faith and the interjection a form of Jewish mysticism advanced as Kabbalah are misplaced and without merit lending no depth to the poor plot.
The book provides a nightmare for parents who entrust educators to select content that is appropriate for children below age 15. Our school system selected this book for its Honors English course as a New York Times best seller. If this is the best the New York Times can select it is no wonder that children are working overtime to create the next Columbine High School massacre.
In addition, the book contains two graphic descriptions one, of a woman being violated and the other in which a young man is "discovering himself" all in vivid details too graphic for a non-adult and adult audience seeking a "G" rating on entertainment materials.
End Analysis: Save your money
Hamill Fan.......2007-06-15
Hamill once again guides his reader through the streets of New York with terribly likeable and detailed characters. Quite simply, Hamill knows the qualities of a good story; realistic yet supernatural, heart-warming and humorous, and all taking place in a world that warmly welcomes the reader into an urban reality. I've been to New York once, but after all of Hamill's works I feel like I'm a native with a knowing sense of respect and love for the character of the city. A very enjoyable read.
One of my favorites of favorites.......2007-04-08
That's it. One of my all-time favorites, period. I once flunked a tryout with the Dodgers at Ebbits Field in '52 -- and can well relate to EVERYTHING going on, especially the mixed cultures (even though I lived in Northern Jersey). Simply, well worth the time! Good stuff.
Confused.......2007-03-17
The author seemed very confused on how to end this novel. He write a lovely story about an unlikely friendship in a troubled neighborhood. Unable to come to an ending, he takes the book into a Harry Potter land of make believe. Make up your mind what type of genre you're writing for!

Book Description
This is a book of jazzy, edgy, adventuresome poems from the author of Earthquake Weather and Like Cities, Like Storms. Ever aware, ever vivid, ever focused, Kleinzahler's are some of the finest lyrics being produced in American poetry today. "Pieces of ordinary talk are Kleinzahler's strong suit," as Helen Vendler observed in Parnassus, "because they occur in his glancing, alert rhythms. . . . [His] jaunty skips and riffs solace the ear." Red Sauce, Whiskey and Snow presents an experimental poetry of exceptional wit and control.

Book Description
From Gao Xingjian, a winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Literature, comes a "major drama about life."
Snow in August is based on the life of Huineng (AD 633-713), the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in Tang Dynasty China. Packed with the myriad sights and sounds of both the Eastern and Western theatrical traditions, the play exudes wonder and mysticism. The many koan cases and the story of Huineng's enlightenment afford the audience fascinating vignettes of Gao's vision of life and existence ¢w an awareness of the Void and the need for a personal peace with oneself.
Customer Reviews:
An Eastern Wind.......2006-12-24
Nobel Prize winner Gao Xingjian's play "Snow in August" is borne by an Eastern wind, quite different from what Western audiences would expect to see for a night in the theatre. The scholarly introduction traces Xingjian's influences from Meyerhold, Artaud & Brecht and points out similarities and differences. With more than 30 characters and much of the script sung, it would be a challenge to stage. Rather than having a traditional story, we see more of a philosophical development. To describe what happens, a monk named Huineng becomes a major Buddhist leader before his death at the end of Act II. Act III follows up and communicates that life continues with its joys and disappointments. I enjoyed reading the play because it was quite different. Xingjian creates excellent tension with many of his crowd scenes and short staccato dialogue contrasted with flowing spiritually flavored speeches. Not knowing the music, it is harder to interpret the impact of the singing from just reading the page. All in all, this is an interesting reading experience that makes me want to become familiar with more of the playwright's work. Enjoy!

Here is a beautiful companion piece to Smilla's Sense of Snow. Whether you're a fan of Peter Hoeg's novel, Bille August's film adaptation, or both, you'll be delighted by this book. It contains every word of Ann Biderman's film script and hundreds of color photographs. It also features interviews with all the major cast members, a history of Greenland, articles on the film's production by major members of the crew, and, best of all, a 20-page transcript of a revealing dialogue between August and Hoeg about the themes of the book and the making of the film.

Smilla's Sense of Snow - making the movie.......2007-04-11
This is a very interesting book. It has the movie script, which turned out to be a little different in the movie itself. It helped me to understand finer details that I had missed in the movie. I also found the images of Greenland quite breathtaking. It is a beautiful, powerful landscape and the actors and film makers had an appreciation for the landscape and the people that I found nourishing.

Customer Reviews:
Nothing spectacular about this one.......2006-11-03
I'm not sure I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This typical storyline has been done over and over again that I've grown a bit tired of it. You know what I mean: the consummate bad boy, whom all the mothers warned their daughters about and all the wives, widows and spinsters dream of, meets a raving beauty who tames his wild heart. He fights a losing battle against his overwhelming attraction to her but eventually succumbs to the fate destiny has wrought for him.
Of course, I was well aware of this going in to the book. I picked up it up only because I'm currently reading all of Madeline Hunter's books and I'd have to say that this one is her weakest. The characters were okay, albeit a bit unconvincing in their roles. The storyline was very predictable and the supposed attraction between Bride and Ewan seemed too contrived.
Overall, I'd say you'd probably end up skimming through most of the story if you decide to read this book.
A pure delight...thoughtful, sensual and very satisfying.......2006-04-09
This is a smart, well written, and satisfying story with interesting leads, a good romance and a compelling mystery. Ewan McLean, carefree lover and man-about-town, promises his uncle the earl, on his deathbed, that he will help the family of a man whom the uncle ruined years before. This takes Ewan, now the new earl, to a remote part of Scotland where he learns that the man has died and left behind four daughters. Ewan and the eldest daughter Bride, a passionate and self-reliant Scottish beauty, are immediately and intensely attracted to one another. They have several intimate encounters, but Ewan does not allow things to go too far because he feels responsible for Bride - responsibility being a rather new concept for Ewan. The sisters are barely making ends meet, so Ewan offers to move them to a comfortable home in Glasgow, but they stubbornly refuse. They insist they can get by on the money they earn from engraving prints from templates, a trade learned from their father. Ewan nonetheless arranges for generous trusts for the three younger sisters (Bride refuses one for herself), and reluctantly returns to London, afraid that he will compromise Bride if he stays.
Weeks pass and Ewan cannot get Bride out of his mind. Then suddenly she appears on his doorstep, sisters in tow, having been evicted from their home. What Ewan does not know is that Bride has another reason for coming to London. She is trying to find out who stole her late father's templates for forged banknotes, before she and her sisters can be implicated. What Bride does not know is that Ewan, an expert on engravings, is investigating reports of forged banknotes on behalf of the government. With deception and intrigue swirling around them, can true love prevail for this passionate pair?
This appealing story is well-paced and held my interest from start to finish. Ewan and Bride are an unusual and refreshing couple, for each has a background that is somewhat imperfect, and yet they are clearly perfect for one another. Ewan is a collector of erotic art and has a liking for all things sensual; Bride does not reject out of hand his rather unconventional hobby, but instead has a healthy curiosity about it. Both have great appreciation for the other's qualities, and they truly connect as soul mates on a physical, emotional and intellectual level. The story has many funny moments as Ewan tries to hide his irregular activities from the prying eyes of Bride's sisters and chaperone, all while they are living under his roof. The dialogue is thoughtful and intelligent, and the romance sensual and satisfying. Highly recommended.
Another lush historical by Madeline Hunter.......2005-09-03
Courtesy of Love Romances Reviews
Ewan McLean is a grand seducer of women. All he cares about is enjoying the pleasures of the flesh and adding to his collection of erotic art. Until he grants the death bed wish of his uncle to right an old wrong, that is. Now Ewan is off to Scotland to grant this request and his life changes abruptly as a result.
Bride Cameron is the sole support of her family that consists of herself and three younger sisters. They make their living by doing engravings using their father's old equipment, and by a secret mission that could get them into big trouble if ever discovered. The last thing she needs is an overbearing man coming into their home with the strange idea that he should support them.
Sparks fly between Ewan and Bride from their first meeting, and those sparks grow into a burning desire as they journey back to London to try and track down the person who is forging money and priceless works of art. As Bride works her way in to Ewan's heart, he begins to wonder if his life would be better with her in his bed... as his wife.
Madeline Hunter has written another lush historical to delight her many fans. In this story she even gets to demonstrate her remarkable knowledge of art, which is the focal point of her career outside of her books. It is more than evident that she knows her stuff where the history of the art of printing is concerned. Readers will love to see the results of the compilation of both of her careers in this book.
Readers who have read previous books in the Seducer series will remember the carefree Ewan. It is delightful to see how he grows and changes throughout this story. Bride is a force to be reckoned with as well, with a fiery temperament to match her flame-colored hair. Ewan has met his match in Bride and watching the dance of desire between them is fascinating.
The plot of the forged art and money is brilliantly woven throughout the story, adding to the romance found in this tale and showcasing both Ewan and Bride's considerable knowledge of art. There are also enough sub plots to intrigue readers on many different levels. Readers will also relish the opportunity to visit some old friends from previous books in the series.
As always, Ms. Hunter has penned a passionate love story, rich in historical detail, that is bound to leave fans, be they new or old, longing for the next book by this talented author.

One of the best among Hunter's latest!.......2005-07-17
As I said, this is one of the best of Hunter's latest books. Her first 3 are the best I have ever read. Back to this one: I loved Ewan's sensual nature, and how both were very passionate. I enjoyed the story surrounding their love affair. Many men could learn how to make love by reading Hunter's books. She is the best I have read at describing the intimacy. She writes a good story surrounding the intimacy. You can count on her to write at a mature level. I did find that "Ewan" was not an attractive name, and did not fit this smoldering, sensual, man.
Save time and money. Skip this book........2005-06-28
I don't recall the author's other books being quite as bad as this one. I almost didn't make it to the end, but I did--and save yourself the trouble--it wasn't worth it. The hero and heroine were amoral, "do as I say and not as I do" characters who saw nothing wrong with orgies, pornography, or forgery.
And what was with the heroine's other family members? An aunt/servant(?) who looked the other way no matter what her nieces did, including sexual misconduct and forgery. One sister who lived in la-la land except when she chose to come out of it and make perfect sense. One sister who was a cross-dresser. And the youngest sister who was constantly being pulled out of trouble if the others cared enough to check on her. I could go on with the problems in the book, but I think you get the gist.

Delicious and Sexy Debut.......2007-08-27
Ivo Dauntry has spent six years in exile for a duel over the honor of the beautiful Georgiana Exley. Upon his return, Ivo learns the lovely and now widowed willful, independent, and passionate Georgiana is not the same woman he defended in his youth. Angered by this discovery, he is determined on revenge for his lost life, but soon is lured to the new sensual, older and wiser Georgiana. The passionate Georgiana never allows her lovers more than one night in her bed, but as part of Ivo's revenge, he demands six nights. As Ivo and Geogiana are drawn together again, will six nights be enough or will the lure of their desires bind them even closer? As the reader gets caught up in this sensual, well-written story, it is hard to believe it is written by a debut author. Kalen Hughes is an author to look for in the future. New historical romance fans are looking forward to her next release!
Delicious and Steamy! (B+ Grade).......2007-07-20
Lord Sin, the first book by new author Kalen Hughes is simply a delicious and hot romp in the lat 18th century. The hero lusts and is so obsessed with the heroine that he can hardly sit still because he is so... frustrated for her.
Ivo is a man after my own heart, because after six years of a scandal he suffered due in part to the woman of his desires, he has come back to England and when their eyes finally meet, it is scorching. (Any author who can make that emotional so well on paper is amazing)
The heroine George is not the normal run of the mill virginal nitwits found in other novels. She has been married to a man she adored, taken lovers (at her own discretion) and is surrounded by men and women alike who love her just the way she is. If a man wants her and she feels the same, her rule is she will only have one night with them. But when Ivo enters the picture, he wants six nights for the six years missing between them.
There is a little unneeded mystery about someone trying to kill George, but it doesn't overtake the story. This is all about an alpha male taking what is due him and that is his mate.
For anyone who likes their romance, hot, sweaty and a little dirty, you must read this one.
If Hughes continues writing this way, she has a bright future in store.

Steamy.......2007-07-06
I have to admit I don't usually read this genre, but I picked this one up after hearing great things about it. Wow! I'm pretty sure I was actually blushing in my airplane seat. I love the story about a strong woman who's not afraid to take what she wants, but what she really pines for to just be "taken." The push and pull between the main characters is palpable. It jumps off the page. Looking forward to the next one, but could the next title be a little less obvious? The thrill of the book is its careful subtlety and pace.
I was hoping..........2007-06-15
I bought Lord Sin after reading the reviews posted below, and I must say that I wish I hadn't! This is VERY far from being "historical romance at its best" (although it's a great example of why romance novels have gotten a bad rap).
In the first chapter alone I thought I was going to scream if Kalen Hughes used the word "humanity" once more to describe a crowd. She's also fond of throwing in what appear to me to be random vocab words of yore in order to validate the historical time frame, but it fails miserably (and I have no idea what she's talking about). Furthermore, there are little details that don't line up that drive me nuts. For example, the heroine and the hero share a steamy kiss on the stairs as she's heading to her rooms. Shortly thereafter, bathed and dress, she come down the hallway from her room (which is on the first floor)...um....OK.
As a lover of romance, I have to say that this one is weak. There's simply not enough backstory and not enough depth.
Fantastic new author!.......2007-06-01
What a delightful read from a debut author! Cozy up on your chaise lounge and get ready for one fast read. Wonderful details, sexy prose, compelling characters. I don't usually like the Georgian period as much as the regency period but Ms. Hughes brought this period alive and made it accessible and exciting. This one's going on my keeper shelf.

Sin is in........2006-07-14
I really enjoyed this book. The characters are well rounded, the plot draws you in, and the love scenes are very well written(although there should have been more of them.:)
Lord Sin's reputation is not what one would call chaste. He is known for his many conquests in London, and for his terrible temper. Annaliza Sedgewick is a fiery young woman who, from the moment of laying eyes on the notorious Lord Sin, despises him entirely. But as fate would have it they would soon cross paths again, this time in her territory. Much danger is to be found when Sin realizes that Annaliza has been thrown(or rather thrown herself) into the path of a ruthless smuggler, Richard Manford.
This book was so hard to put down; make sure you have enough time to devote to reading this thrilling novel.
WARNING:
If you have a problem with rape, there are two rape scenes in this book. One ends up being somewhat consensual and the other(which is quite graphic) is most definitely NOT.
Otherwise it's a great read.
:)Hope this was helpful! Happy Reading ^_^

This story started out good but once it got in to all the dialogue between the servants it became boring. It was like the servants were main characters with a lot of focus on them, and they were supposed to be humorous. I found the focus on them to be repititious and boring. Story was good when it focused on Annaliza and Sin. At one point, Anna is raped. The author gives a detailed account of this rape, and then it is never addressed again. Strange! As if Anna was not effected by being raped. This author has done better than this book indicates.
Lord Sin - "Unholy Coupling".......2001-06-17
Lord Jonathan Sinclair was the most handsome and most nortoriously sexual lord in eighteenth century England. Annaliza Sedgewick was a lovely, unspoiled young woman from the untamed cliffs of Cornwall..."Their first meeting exploded in violence, as Annaliza learned the power of lust within her, and Sinclair for the first time felt the seductive stirrings of love. Annaliza fought against her own desire by leaguing herself with a man sworn to destroy her conqueror. Sinclair sought to mock his heart's hunger with orgies of the flesh. And both were swept up in a mounting whirlwind of intrigue and passion that seemed certain to tear them apart before it could make them one..." A truly excellent novel. Lord Sin is superbly written as eloquent language/dialogue is employed by the author throughout the novel. A must read for true lovers of romance literature. It was first printed in 1980 and is currently out of print. Buy it now, before it is too late.

The Courage Scripture Reference Guide outlines the underlying principles of Courage: A Book for Champions, with a sound foundation of Scripture verses. Dr. Coles describes the trends in modern society that causes the suppression or distortion of the characteristics of manhood. He discusses the importance of men being men and women being women, hindrances to courage, sanctifying the ego to use it in achieving great things for God, forgiveness releasing sins, sex as God created it, concentrating on strengths, the importance of attending to details, and the courage to stand against the secular cultural trends in the world and in the Church. This study guide adds an extra dimension to the book by bringing the concepts and principles into plain sight and extending the scope of the message. You will learn that champions are made, not born! Develop the characteristics you need to become the Champion God designed you to be.
