Book Description

On the dark waterside docks of Shanghai, a photographer is recording cargo being secretly loaded when he's brutally killed and his camera destroyed. Two weeks later, on the dangerous high seas, the U.S. Navy covertly tracks a Chinese cargo ship rumored to carry tons of chemicals for Saddam Hussein to create new biological weapons. The President cannot let the ship reach Iraq. At the same time, he doesn't want the navy to attack and board it either, because decades of negotiations with China have at long last yielded a landmark human rights agreement that China is willing to sign. Fighting to keep the agreement on track, the President orders the head of Covert-One to find proof of what the Chinese ship is ferrying. Under cover of a medical conference, operative Col. Jon Smith is sent to Taiwan to rendezvous with another agent who has acquired the ship's true manifest. But the second agent is murdered, the proof is destroyed, and Smith is left only with a verbal message-the President's biological father is still alive, held prisoner by the Chinese for fifty years. Racing against the clock, Smith uncovers the truth about the ship, a truth that probes the deepest secrets of the Chinese ruling party and reveals a terrifying cabal whose diabolical plan thrusts the world to the very brink of war.

4 out of 5 stars In the Ludlum style.......2007-02-19

The recent spate of "co-writers" under the Ludlum name (with his estate's blessing) are generally quite good, but not as spellbinding as Ludlum. However they are a good read, and I would recommend them for any fan of the espionage genre.

2 out of 5 stars Frustration.......2006-03-09

It is obvious that the plot and characters are very good. Ludlum was a master of putting a good novel together. The problem comes when another author picks up the outline and tries to create the story from it.

At times, the book is very readable and the action moves along, but other times the author decides to try and describe characters you have already been introduced to and seemingly has an inability to create a different description for each, as much of the wording is identical or very close.

As others have mentioned, there are times when the author seems to have difficulty writing a particular passage and the words come out a bit jumbled. I would have expected a proof-reader or editor to catch some of these snags.

If you can ignore stinted and misplaced descriptions along with poorly phrased sections, the story the author is trying to craft can be quite decent.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-11-23

This covert-one novel has a great plot and will not disappoint you. Lynds ties in current events well and writes a cohesive and action packed story in vintage Ludlum fashion.

1 out of 5 stars IF YOU'VE READ "REAL LUDLUM NOVELS" DON'T BUY THIS OR ANY COVERT ONE BOOK .......2005-07-03

Having read all of Ludlum's novels from the Scarlatti Inhairence to the Materesse Countdown, I appriciate his action packed, suspense stuffed writing style. His use of details makes you feel like you can go to the location and know your way around, coupled with his tactic of explosive action while slowly unfolding the plot and learnig the characters personalities--keeps you on the edge of your seat.

As for him, well we lost a GREAT author. These new series are not even worthy of the Ludlum name. I understand he wrote the outline, but the outline is nothing compared to the meat and bones--details, descriptions and things you find in the body of the novel---this is what keeps readers intrigued!!!!! These co-authors are women first of all, how can they write from a man's perspective? In all the stories unfold too fast--i.e. she gives too much information too early, so theres a lack of suspense. Theres also either too little details or too many and as for the descriptions of locations ---they suck and could be expanded alot. The endings are corney(everyone lives and is happy) and not realistic, like the true Late Great Ludlum.

5 out of 5 stars I actually like the Covert novels.......2005-01-25

Robert Ludlum has been my faovorite author for as long as I can remember....now that he is gone, and has written the outline for these books, I didn't think I would like them, but I was wrong, I like them all....I will be standing in line to get all of these books!

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Cheesy.......2006-08-28

After really liking the Bourne Identity movies I figured I'd pick out a Ludlum novel because it would be good. I got this from the library to check out and figured it would be a good read while I was on vacation. I was very disappointed.

I barely got through it, but it helped me get to sleep so I plugged on. First off, to reload a pistol you use a MAGAZINE, it's not a clip. To hear some super special forces secret agent type calling it a clip takes all credibility away from the author to me. It is soooo painfully obvious that the writer Gayle lynds has done no research whatsoever into weapons or combat and has never fired a firearm. If you're going to write an action/thriller type novel, at least write like you somewhat know what you're talking about. An MP5 is not going to slam anybody's body back like a sack of rice, it fires 9mm rounds. Bullets do not push people back, not even a little bit, unless it's from a cannon of some sort or some other huge weapon designed to attack tanks or buildings. Also, nobody is ever going to win and/or escape any firefight when they're armed with a 9mm Glock and a 9mm Beretta and they are facing off against a force that outnumbers them 6 to 1 and is armed with assault rifles.

The writing was poor, the dialogue was unrealistic, and it is littered with things that just make the author lose credibility (clips). I will give Ludlum another chance by reading another novel, but Gayle Lynds is a very poor writer. And what is up with her constant use of the word "too". She has sentences like "And I better get over to the building, too." Why is there a comma there Gayle, it doesn't sound right. It should be "I'll get over to the building too." It takes away the choppiness. I did not get the sense at all that the main character was tough, it was clearly written by somebody that has never done any of the things she writes about.

Seeing that such poor writing gets published is actually a good thing, it gives me hope for my novel.

I give this book 2 stars, and overall rating of "Extreme Cheese".

4 out of 5 stars For some mind-candy entertainment, this works..........2006-06-25

The other paperback I was using to kill time on the plane during my recent trip was Robert Ludlum's The Altman Code by Gayle Lynds. This is my first exposure to the Covert-One series, so I can't compare it to others for quality. But so far as political espionage yarns go, this wasn't bad...

The American government gets wind of a chemical shipment from China to Iran, and the material has only one use... as weapons. The official cargo manifest doesn't reflect that reality, and therein lies the problem. If the military stops the boat, they risk international condemnation for aggression (especially if they are wrong about the contents). But if they don't stop the boat, then the Iranian government has weapons of mass destruction. To complicate issues (because there *always* has to be complications), all the official channels that could be used to resolve this matter are taking stances that will move each country to the brink of a massive war. Not only does the boat need to be stopped before it enters the Gulf, but the government also needs to figure out who is pushing for war over peace...

In many ways, this is the typical "covert action, disavow all knowledge if anything happens" type story. There's a subplot involving the President and an old prisoner held in China who claims to be the President's biological father. It's a little "out there", but not so much that it distracts from the main story. Based on what I saw in this novel, I'd be inclined to look for a few more in the series if I was looking for some mind-candy...

2 out of 5 stars Pass on this one.......2006-04-18

I was extrememly dissapointed by this novel. I actually found myself rooting for the bad guys when they finally caught the good guy! The plot had potential -- US & Chinese politics, WMDs, a Mideast connection, etc., but the characters are really hard to believe. It seems like the bad guys are everywhere, watching everything, and only the hero is clueless. Narrow escape after narrow escape, the reader isn't inspired by the hero's dedication, instead, you are left stunned by his stupidity.
If you are a Ludlum fan, pass this one up. There are better choices.

2 out of 5 stars Spy thriller? try Snooze fest.......2004-11-10

This was my first Robert Ludlum novel and I am seriously disappointed. I don't know that I'll even finish it. Characters have literally had the same conversations multiple times, as if the author isnt sure we were paying attention and they better summarize the plot again, just to be safe. The writing itself just tries to hard and is, in a word, lame. Sample line: "He crossed the room to the sink and picked up the dish liquid, Dawn, and poured some in the sink." Like we need to what brand of dish soap it is(!)?

From the summary on the jacket, this novel sounded promising. Instead, I'm fighting to stay awake, not caring if they ever catch the bad guys. 2 out 5 stars because I've managed to hang on more than half way.

1 out of 5 stars Beware of this substandard effort........2004-09-11

If you're a Ludlum fan, like I am, you will be acutely disappointed in this bomb. After the likes of The Sigma Protocol and The Janson Directive, this one is about as interesting as watching the tide come in. It starts with a hackneyed premise of terrorist weapon materials being transported to China, then comes to a grinding halt as the "story" stagnates for hundreds of pages, going on and on, with no advancement of the plot whatsoever, like a car stuck in the mud.

The plot in this one involves some potential chemical weapons, and China. Apparently the Chinese are holding a political prisoner and have been for many years.

This man, it seems, is likely the father of the US president. So, a bit of rebel action inside China, and some other fun with nasty weapons for the Doc and his gang.

                Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Unsatisfying and UN-romantic.......2006-06-06

While best-selling author, John Grisham, can write books depicting tough and hardened characters in dangerous situations with nary a cuss word, Fern Michaels seems unable to express any type of emotion without cussing. In this book, Ms. Michaels packs in every four-letter word she knows and proceeds to overuse them in every one of her characters' diologue (except the priest at the homeless shelter). Makes the reader feel your mind has been drug through the sewer.

Although this book is touted as "romantic", the truth is that Ruby, the main character, never understands or discerns true love at all. Her relationships with men, relatives and women friends are all precarious and superficial. I found the love scenes to be so shallow and unemotional that I wonder if Fern Michaels has never experienced deep love in her own life?

Ruby begins life a victim of an abusive father. I found myself hoping she would rise above her past -- but her choices backfired and left her emotionally destitute. Instead of forsaking a life maimed by the vices of her parents, Ruby plunged into a whole new set of vices and reaped the consequences.

The end of the book strives to leave the reader on a happy note -- that Ruby has found new vision for her senior citizen years as an animal rights activist -- but it is a real stretch to believe this newfound "cause" will bring her lasting fulfillment. What Ruby was looking for -- and never found -- was love.

Several times, Ruby began to reach out to God, but never quite made the jump. Unrealistically, Fern Michaels has Ruby (who is a smoker and a bucket mouth, separated from her husband, estranged from her daughter and sisters, in a five-year affair with a married man) begin to teach a weekly Sunday School class. Throughout the book, Ruby is portrayed as knowing next to nothing about God and the minute she returns to church after a 40-year hiatus, she is immediately qualified to teach others???

This book had potential, but proved very, very disappointing.

I had read several recent editions of Ms. Michaels books and wanted to read her earlier efforts. I thought this book was the best yet. It kept me coming back.It had suspense, mystery and roamance. What more could a reader ask for? It was written in such a way that made the main character come alive. Not too many authors are able to do that. Thanks Ms. Michaels for a wonderful story!

3 out of 5 stars Middle of the road.......2005-03-17

This book started out strong but lost me in the middle. I cheered Ruby her accomplishments but I was disappointed that she wasn't allowed to enjoy her life at all! After growing up in hell and overcoming many obstacles she never got to enjoy the fruits of her labor. Her relationship with her two longtime friends was unrealistic. As was her relationship with her two sisters. They were on again off again and the characters of the sisters didn't really have any substance. The part after the funeral of her father really disappointed me as well. I feel that there were a few parts of the story that didn't really belong and she could have just left those out completely. I do love the rags to riches and underdog type theme of Ms. Michaels books!

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorite books.......2001-07-09

I am an avid reader. I am never without a book to read and this one was just wonderful. I hated it it end. It was a long book but I loved every minute of it. When people ask me some of my favorite books, this one continues to top my list. I have read other Fern Michaels books and some were good and some not so good, but this was by far, in my opinion, her best.

I WAS DISAPPOINTED IN THIS BOOK AS A WHOLE. THE STORYLINES WERE FINE. THE LEAD MALE CHARACTERS IN THE FIRST THREE STORIES WERE WHIMPY AND WEAK AND THE LEAD FEMALES WERE WHINEY. THE FOURTH STORY 'SECRETS WITHIN' WAS MUCH BETTER. THE CHARACTERS WERE STRONG. EVEN THOUGH LAINE HAD PROBLEMS IN HER LIFE AND THINGS IN HER PAST WITH WHICH SHE HAD TO DEAL, SHE DIDN'T WHINE. JEFF WAS SELF CONFIDENT AND SELF ASSURED. THE STORYLINE WAS INTRIGUING AND SUSPENSEFUL. I'VE ORDERED THE BOOK 'SECRETS WITHIN' TO ADD TO MY COLLECTION. IT'S WORTH READING AGAIN.

Now, I'm over 40, so I am partial to books for women in this age group. More and more titles have been coming out to reach the lady "boomers". Some are good, some not so much. I believe that Fantastic After 40 stands head and shoulders above most other books in this genre.
This book is an inspirational, Christian title that takes a look on how to handle aging with grace and joy. It offers practical advice to women in all walks of life for dealing with health, finances, the "empty nest", aging parents, menopause, and much more!
The author has a reader-friendly writing style that leaves you feeling like you've just had a chat with your girlfriend. It is must read for anyone approaching 40 or for those of us who are beyond that bend in the road.

Pam Farrel's "Fantastic After 40!" is a useful, uplifting book on how to handle life changes and life in general after the oh-so-dreaded fortieth birthday. Since I've recently passed this milestone myself, I was truly curious to see that kind of advice she has to offer.

While very much Christian oriented - and I do wish there was something in the title or subtitle to alert the reader to that, since there are some readers who will not be able to identify themselves with it - I found the book both helpful and inspirational. In addition to the useful and very much expected advice to pray, study the Bible and have a group of supportive girlfriends it offers a lot of practical advice in many walks of life, from dealing with family issues, health, finances and more. It teaches one how to build a new, more positive outlook on life and how to live life that way. It provides advice on how to improve your health and energy levels. It deals with the inevitable arrival of menopause and how to make this transition easier. Filled with both humor and practical advice it is a good reference book.

Farrel's writing style is fluid and pleasantly chatty. Even while speaking of putting your trust in God, prayer and renewal, she does not sound preachy. Numerous practical examples, illustrated with real stories of her friends and acquaintances, make heartening reading. If nothing else, you will discover that other women have problems as well - and oftentimes much larger than yours. There is a lot to be learned from this manual - and you can always take the parts that work for you and skip the rest.

Interesting and useful reading for any woman approaching 40 or all of us who have already passed this milestone - and left it behind us in dust! - "Fantastic After 40?" is a book that deals with changes happening to us in a positive way and offers a slew of doable solutions to our problems.
