Book Description
When Repeat After Me was first published in the 1980's, it was a time when adult children of alcoholic families were coming out of the closet by the thousands. Until that time these were people who were silently making their way through adulthood not understanding why they were so unsatisfied and unhappy when "everything seemed okay," or why some one thing, person or place "was never enough." For many there was a chronic gnawing sense that something was missing. This great number of people happily took on the identity of being an ACA or ACOA (Adult Child of Alcoholic). They were grateful to have a framework in which to understand and conceptualize their experience. They had been given a language in which to voice their experiences. Yet what was true for this particular population could be generalized to people from other types of troubled families. They were from homes where there were abuses, other addictions, compulsive behaviors or mental illness homes that for whatever the reasons were characterized by loss and shame. Repeat After Me was written in the spirit of offering all who were raised in troubled families a process of self-exploration, insight and healing that would lead to a positive change in their lives.
As adults began that process of asking how their childhood was influencing their present day life, the intent was never one of blame but of insight and understanding. It has been the author's contention that we repeat the life scripts of our family as a result of internalized beliefs and behaviors that were either modeled for us or were a part of our survivorship. We cannot put a painful past history behind us without first owning it. It is not enough to say I came from an alcoholic family or an abusive family. We must go beyond that acknowledgment to see how our internalized beliefs and behaviors have shaped us to be the person we are today. With that in mind Repeat After Me was written.
Repeat After Me is not a book that explains how problems come to be as much as it is a book that takes you through a process of letting go of hurtful beliefs and behaviors. While insight is often the precursor to change, insight alone is not enough for most people to create change. People need to believe they deserve positive change and they need to develop skills that make change occur. While many of the changes in this second edition of Repeat After Me are subtle, it is written to support the reader's belief in their personal worth and assist them in identifying and focusing on skills. The knowledge that comes in owning the past and connecting it to the present is vital to developing empathy for the strength of both our defenses and skills. It also helps us to lessen our shame and not hold ourselves accountable for the pain we have carried. When we understand the reasons for why we have lived our life as we have, that understanding fuels our ongoing healing. The change we want to create in our life is made most directly as a result of letting go of old, hurtful belief systems and learning new skills. Repeat After Me guides you in this process.

Repeat After Me is worth the money.......2006-08-09
This book contains some nice information and is a worthwhile read.
"Repeat" is not Realistic.......2005-05-21
This is a work book designed to help ACOAs break free of the constraints of their upbringing. I am an ACOA and, like you reading my review, wanted to believe that re-training my thinking and outlook through these text book exercises would improve my life. I am sorry to say that is NOT realistic. The book is juvenile and tiresome with it's page after page of lists of feelings and events. Also, it is nothing more than her earlier book "It will never happen to me" with these exercises punctuating each paradigm. My best recommendation would be to purchase her original book and save your time, hope and money by passing over the temptation to commit to Repeat after Me work book. The original book is quite insightful and thought provoking on it's own. Good luck.
Recommended by my doctor.......2004-05-13
I haven't ordered this book yet, but it was recommended my pshyciatrist. As for causing more pain, well, when it comes to matters like these, it's going to happen. I will be using this in conjunction with medication to help me out of my depression, caused by my mentally abusive childhood. It usually gets worse before it gets better...No pain, No gain...I am doing this for me and my family.
Excellent book, but proceed with caution.......2004-04-22
This book is designed to bring issues to the surface, where they can be dealt with. That's a good thing, but it is WORK. I recommend using this book only while in therapy. It may bring up issues that are too difficult to deal with on your own. And some of it may be quite painful for a while. But the process works.
Repeat After Me by Claudia Black.......2003-05-07
This is a workbook for adult survivors of various kinds of abuse. I have used it in my law practice to assist young women who are facing the monumental decision of placing a child for adoption. Although this book is not new, it certainly deserves a place on your library shelf if you are in a helping profession or you work with teens or adults who have these issues. The book is designed to be used as a self-help manual to rebuild an individual's self-esteem.

Book Description
Three women learn that the heart of their historic home holds a mystery of years gone by, as number-one bestselling author Nora Roberts brings her In the Garden trilogy to a captivating conclusion, following Blue Dahlia and Black Rose.
A Harper has always lived at Harper House, the centuries-old mansion just outside of Memphis. And for as long as anyone alive remembers, the ghostly Harper Bride has walked the halls, singing lullabies at night...
Hayley Phillips came to Memphis hoping for a new start, for herself and her unborn child. She wasn't looking for a handout from her distant cousin Roz, just a job at her thriving In the Garden nursery. What she found was a home surrounded by beauty and the best friends she's ever had-including Roz's son Harper. To Hayley's delight, her new daughter Lily has really taken to him. To Hayley's chagrin, she has begun to dream about Harper-as much more than a friend...
If Hayley gives in to her desire, she's afraid the foundation she's built with Harper will come tumbling down. Especially since she's begun to suspect that her feelings are no longer completely her own. Flashes of the past and erratic behavior make Hayley believe that the Harper Bride has found a way inside of her mind and body. It's time to put the Bride to rest once and for all, so Hayley can know her own heart again-and whether she's willing to risk it...
Customer Reviews:
Good, but not excellent.......2007-08-22
I came away from this conclusion to Roberts' "In the Garden" trilogy a bit disappointed, but satisfied overall. There was just a bit too much of the stereotypical ghost behavior, although I was quite pleased at the different approach from the other two novels. The characters remain sympathetic and likable, although I think Hayley is just a bit too sicky sweet for my taste. The chemistry remains light and easy. The dénouement was a tiny bit anticlimactic, but the drama and excitement beforehand made up for it somewhat.
All in all, a fitting end to an excellent trilogy by an author who rarely lets her readers down. While not one of Roberts' strongest series, it is quite enjoyable and memorable.
Trilogy.......2007-07-19
This was a very good trilogy. It will keep you interested to the last page!
Good Authors.......2007-07-04
Nora Roberts is always a good read and she does not disappoint with this series.
So this is Nora Roberts . . ........2007-06-30
This was my first Nora Roberts and one of the only books I never finished. After several chapters, nothing had happened. No suspense was developed. Just page after page of aimless dialogue among a cast of cookie-cutter romance characters. Only the heroine had a personality - one so insipid and self-absorbed that I began to hope the dreaded ghost would get her. But even the supernatural failed to pump any energy into this listless story. I really wanted to like the author because she has so many books available, but if this is typical of her writing, I'm baffled by her popularity.
A Perfect Ending to the Trilogy - But I Still Want More!.......2007-05-14
I always hate when trilogies end, and the "In the Garden" trilogy (Blue Dahlia (In the Garden, Book 1), Black Rose: In the Garden Trilogy (In the Garden), and now RED LILY) is no exception. You get to know the characters so completely, and feel such a connection with them, that they become almost real--and you just want to keep on reading about their lives!
RED LILY is the story of Harper Ashby, oldest son of Rosalind (BLACK ROSE), and Hayley Phillips. Hayley had come to Harper House the previous year, pregnant and alone, to beseech Roz, a distant cousin through marriage, for a job. Unwed, with her baby's father out of the picture, Hayley wasn't looking for a handout, but for a chance to start over. What Roz offered her was so much more--a job, a place to stay at the renowned Harper House, and a family.
Now she has her daughter Lily, a great job, and a roof over her head, but lately she's been thinking of Harper, the man whose been her friend through it all, in a brand-new light--that of a love interest. Afraid to ruin their friendship by telling him how she feels, she keeps quiet. Harper, on the other hand, has wanted Hayley in a more than friendly fashion ever since he laid eyes upon her--pregnant and all--more than a year ago. But he's sure that she doesn't think of him in the same way, and he's leary of messing up the friendship that means to much to him.
As these two friends--both wanting to be so much more--fight their attraction to each other, the resident ghost of the house, the Harper Bride, kicks into high gear. She's always been loving and kind to the children in the house, singing them lullabies in the night, but she seems to hate men, and she's become especially violent now that Hayley is entertaining thoughts of romance.
As the whole crew--Roz and her new husband Mitch, a geneologist trying his hardest to discover who the Harper Bride really is; Stella and Logan, both employees of Roz's In the Garden shop; and Hayley and Harper, who live on Harper/Ashby land--try to figure out the Bride's agenda, their lives are in danger, and their hearts and passions intertwine with that of the ghost's.
I loved this entire trilogy, and read RED LILY in one day. It was a perfect conclusion to this powerful family saga, and I was especially happy to finally learn the answers to who the Harper Bride was, and what happened to her.
I will admit that there was one surprise twist to the storyline that I didn't see coming, and wasn't really thrilled with, but since Ms. Roberts wrote it and I didn't, I can't complain! Overall, the story was still great, and in time I learned to live with what I thought was an unnecessary plot device.
Pick up this trilogy today--you won't be disappointed!

Wonderful.......2003-06-17
This book is for anyone who is looking for intrigue and surprise, but most of all, if you're looking to do a little soul searching, this is for you too! While not classified as a mystery or suspenseful novel, The Red Woman and Water Lilies sure will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Happiness Can Sometimes Be Found Right in Front of You.......2001-01-12
This novel is packed with vivid descriptions of life as it was during one of the most exciting times in American history. Each word appears to be selected carefully to allow the reader to imagine that they are actually there at that time, with that person. If you have time to read the book slowly, you can savor each phrase. The book keeps you interested in finding out more about each character and what will happen next. It is a book to be enjoyed by the reader. When you read this book(and you should), it makes you feel good about how good life can be if you follow your heart. The author has a deep insight into people. This is her first published novel, however, there are more on the way. I shall look forward to reading more of these works in the future.
From an Avid Reader.......2001-01-12
I thought this was an excellent novel. The detail in the book made the images come alive in my mind, and the characters were well fleshed out. They were the kind of people that are actually walking around, far from perfect yet incredibly compelling. They were just far enough away from the fairy tale story that one minute I would side with one, then the next, I would be behind another. I found myself rooting for everyone, even when I knew perhaps there was no way everyone could come out on top, especially with all the love triangles. I would reccomend this because I think it reminds us that sometimes we think we know our own hearts, and others hearts, but really, we just need to keep searching, and listening to what really is going on inside of ourselves. Anyone that has been in love, been out of love, been lonely, been scared, been through that soul searching kind of moment will be able to identify with these characters and this story.
Enjoyable Read.......2001-01-12
This is a book that I enjoyed, and with some research due to my curiousity, to my surprise, found that the author is only 20 years old, which made me even more impressed! This is a book that I sat on my back porch and read while drinking my morning coffee. It's about mother and daughter bonds and family life, siblings and roles we take on. I found the love story sweet, but I thought the point was deeper than that. It was about that search I had almost forgotten, that search when we try to figure out who we are and why we are here, what the world holds for us, and how to do our best by this gift of life that we have been given. It's a wonderful reminder, and I look forward to her next works. I cannot imagine what this author may do in the future, if at 20, she has already written this. I highly would give this to my friends and family to read. And actually, already have.

Book Description
"To represent Anatole France as one of the undying names in literature would hardly be extravagant. Not that I would endow Ariel with the stature and sinews of a Titan; this were to miss his distinctive qualities: delicacy, elegance, charm. He belongs to a category of writers who are more read and probably will ever exercise greater influence than some of greater name. The latter show us life as a whole; but life as a whole is too vast and too remote to excite in most of us more than a somewhat languid curiosity. France confines himself to themes of the keenest personal interest, the life of the world we live in. It is herein that he excels! His knowledge is wide, his sympathies are many-sided, his power of exposition is unsurpassed. No one has set before us the mind of our time, with its half-lights, its shadowy vistas, its indefiniteness, its haze on the horizon, so vividly as he." Jules Lemaitre of l?

When Michael Ingram adopted the faith of his Puritan wife, he was imprisoned by Sir Timon, his wealthy autocratic father. Now free but in hiding, Michael plans to sail with his large family to freedom in America. His profligate brother, Ingram, will prevent this if he can. Once Michael is safely off with his wife, it is eldest son Toby's responsibility to follow with his brothers, sisters, and odious Violet Yellow, daughter of Michael's partner. Ingram's treachery wins the first round, but Toby remains determined to outwit the uncle he calls "Judas!" This lively and suspenseful tale has finely drawn characters that brings history to life. The Saturday Review of Literature greeted the new Savery book in 1944 with the words "always a pleasure," and the New York Times spoke of its "genuine suspense." Other reviewers were pleased, also.
The book was revised and republished in 1958 as "Flight to Freedom" with some additional material, but the original edition is tighter and more compelling. My principal objection to the book is that it was never reprinted, and it has been out of print much too long!
