Book Description
Read by Eric Roberts Dick Morrison's life has become a nightmare of addictions, filling his days with overeating, overworking, and smoking way too much. When an old friend tells him about a surefire way to quit, he's more than willing to give it a shot. But what Dick doesn?t know is that Quitters, Inc. demands a high price from anyone who strays from their rigid rules?like a few volts of electricity for the nearest and dearest...or maybe a missing thumb? Forced to choose between his desperate need for cigarettes and the dire consequences of giving in to his addiction, Dick must decide just how important another drag really is.

Quit smoking.... or else.......2007-07-05
Ever tried to quit smoking? Did you fall off the wagon or gain weight when you did? Well Stephen King has found an almost sure fired way to quit. All you have to do is go to Quitters, Inc. In this story, Dick is a heavy smoker. He comes across an old friend who was a smoker as well. As they are chatting, Dick finds out that his friend has quit smoking, lost weight and feels better than ever by going to this place called Quitters, Inc. After much contiplating, Dick finally decides to go. To his surprise though, he is in for more than he bargained for. He finds out that he has to quit smoking cold turkey and if he doesn't the consequences could be horrific. It's not like they are going to hurt him but they will torture his wife and then his son instead. Not only does he have to quit smoking but he has to keep his weight down and keep in good shape. Are they just bluffing? Can he make it or will his family endure the pain for his habit?
Good.......2007-05-26
A normal wierd Stephen King book. One I hadn't read and I don't think it is in a paperback. It was very good though kinda short.
LOVED IT.......2007-05-13
A GREAT LITTLE STORY. I SAT IN THE CAR IN THE DRIVEWAY FOR 20 MINS TO HEAR THE ENDING, I DIDN'T WANT TO WAIT.
Part of 1983 movie.......2006-06-28
This story has stayed with me ever since I first was exposed to it at the movies in 1985. It is one of three short stories within 'Stephen King's Cat's Eye', with James Woods playing 'Dick' in the Quitters, Inc segment. As this particular story had such an effect on me, it was a challenge to not imagine James Woods while listening to Eric Roberts. Fortunately, Eric Roberts did a great job, and allowed me to be absorbed by this wonderfully twisted story again!
a sure-fire way to quit smoking.......2001-12-17
I'm not a smoker, but this story helped me understand what smokers really go through when they try to quit. Even with his wife and his son on the line, the main character still reaches for his cigarettes. A great story.
Book Description
Harvey Pekar, the acclaimed creator and subject of the American Book Award-winning biopic American Splendor, tells the story of his troubled teen years when he would beat up other kids just to win the approval of his peers in this paperback edition of his virtuoso graphic novel. When he failed to impress, whether on the football team, in math class, in the Navy or on the job, he simply gave up. This true tour-de-force is the universal tale of a young man's search for himself through the frustrations, redemptions and complexities of ordinary life.
Customer Reviews:
well...a mixed resonse..........2007-06-09
If you have read Pekar for a decade or more, then the chances are this book won't offer you too many new insights into his life and writing style.
Good as it is, it is probably better suited to relative newcomers to the world of Pekar, since it essentially retells so many of he stories he has already told us in his earlier books. There is indeed, a litte more information given about certain parts of his past -- his time in the navy for example, which Harvey has only hiinted at in his early works, and a little more information is given about his time spent in factories.
But besides that, and a few other small details -- this is a retelling of what he has already described in earlier books.
So, this book makes good reading if you haven't alreay read his earlier works -- but for the long term readers, I'd say buy "Ego and Hubris", and also check out the essential "Unsung Hero", Pekars account of a Vietnam veteran's life. These latter two books show the powerful new direction Harvey seems to be moving in.
Tremendous and honest writer paired with an excellent artist.......2007-05-17
2005 saw the release of some terrific graphic novels. There was new and collected work by Dan Clowes, Joann Sfar, Charles Burns, Will Eisner, Chris Ware and many others. But my favorite is the new book by Harvey Pekar, drawn by Dean Haspiel: The Quitter. I didn't know what to make of it when I heard Pekar's next book was being published by Vertigo/DC. I like the vast majority of stuff they publish, but they lean toward genre material and I couldn't see Pekar writing Sandman-style dark fantasy or horror. I would have given it a try, though, because Pekar's a tremendous and honest writer and Haspiel is an excellent artist.
The Quitter is the story of Pekar's childhood and young adulthood. It details the events and influences that have shaped his life, which he has chronicled in "American Splendor" for the past 30 years. It's quite a catalog of neuroses, the sort of thing only someone who has come to terms with the mistakes and misjudgments of his life could write. Haspiel's art evokes the period well. And if it ends a bit abruptly, well, many of the stories Pekar glosses over near the end have been told in the various "American Splendor" series and collections.
By the way, if you want to see what Pekar can do with genre material, he has a story in the new issue of "The Escapist" published by Dark Horse Comics.
A Personal Best.......2007-02-12
For every boy who feeled he failed his father..For Every man who lived in his father's shadow..For every son who craved his father approval and never recieved it..For those sons who felt the guilt of not living up to expectation of his parents... this book is your story
American Splendor's Harvey Pekar writes another autobiographical graphic novel about his childhood with his father and family. Labeled the Quitter, this brutual honest piece speaks volumes.
Its poignancy, as Pekar Splendor stories, are worth its weight in gold. With Dean Haspiel's art, thgis Pekar tale is given a new liveliness
all I need to say is that Vertigo books, who publishes this one, should do more of Pekar's work...and Harvey, when is another Splendor collection coming?
Bennet Pomerantz AUDIOWORLD
My Only Complaint is That It's Too Short.......2006-12-08
This is a completely enjoyable book that I'm glad I own. Dean Haspiel's art style is clean, clear and very mature. When I first received the book and flipped through it, the images seemed too stark and simplistic for Pekar's writing, but he really won me over after several pages. Pekar's storytelling is great, as usual (although since he has become a bonafide celebrity and a recognized master of his craft, we no longer have the feeling of being the confidant of a nondescript Cleveland file clerk). So I recommend the book, with one complaint: The story ends very abruptly, at a point where you really want to hear more. For instance, we're introduced to Pekar's first wife, and then she just vanishes with no explanation of how the relationship ended. For that reason, although I loved the book, it left me feeling unsatisfied.
Vintage Pekar.......2006-12-01
Well, this makes up for my not owning a copy of American Splendor #1. No, not really. But it is worthy of the comic book Pekar. Love the photos at the end. The book fills in details of events in his life alluded to in earlier works. Great stuff.

Terrific book.......2006-11-10
My four-year-old daughter has been brainwashed by Disney and thinks about princesses all day long. She loves this book. It's a different angle on princesshood, and I really think it's made her more enthusiastic about helping out around the house. (We now talk about "chores" a lot.)
This is a very well-written book, age-appropriate up to about age 7, brilliantly illustrated, fun to read, funny...fabulous.
Even better in person!.......2004-11-19
I just saw and heard Kate Lum read Princesses are not quitters, and the book is even better read live. In drawing inspiration from her daughter, she was able to create a story that saw the other side of "princessdom" as she called it. The princesses learn what hard work is, and that there is more to life than privilege and possessions. Very cute and different! Most enjoyable!
Amazing.......2004-07-09
My niece is 5 years old and wants to be a princess. Princess clothes, princess stories, princess pictures. She thinks being a princess means you are the most beautiful of all, have the most beautiful clothes, and get the handsome prince. Beauty is the sole criterion for princesshood.
Thankfully, there's this book to teach her that the most important and admirable quality in princesses is that they try new things, work hard, are nice to others and never give up. This book gets 5 stars because it's funny, imaginative, excellently illustrated, and reminds kids that princesses have moral qualities of being good people. It's not enough to be beautiful, pampered, rich and wear beautiful clothing; a princess should also be kind, industrious and have a sense of self-respect and a strong work ethic.
Wonderful, wonderful!.......2003-06-05
This is the perfect updated fairy tale. It's light and charming, and makes you feel it's okay to let your little ones indulge their princess obsessions. The three bored princesses trade places with their servants for a day, and it turns out to be a real eye-opener. The princesses make a change for good, and end up sharing the palace workload on a permanent basis. The message of compassion is never too sappy, sweet, or preachy, and the illustrations are truly humorous. I also really enjoyed the rhythm of the text when reading it to my kids. My two girls love it!
About the race to discover one's own capabilities.......2003-04-20
Kate Lum's Princesses Are Not Quitters is a humorous picture book story about three bored princesses who decided to become servants for a day. But it turns out that servants have so much to do, in so little time! Charmingly illustrated by Sue Hellard, Princesses Are Not Quitters is an adventurous and recommended read about the race to discover one's own capabilities.

The vicar's vivacious, determined daughter, Miss Eleanor Lyndon, needs a new home, since her father's insufferable fiancee is making her old one intolerable. Destinly has brought Charles and Ellie together – though their match at the outset appears to have been made somewhere rather hotter than heaven

"
When Charles Wycombe, the dashing and incorrigible Earl of Billington, toppled out of a tree and landed at Ellie's feet, neither suspected that such an inauspicious meeting would lead to marriage. But Charles must find a bride before his thirtieth birthday or he'll lose his fortune. And Ellie needs a husband or her father's odious fiancée will choose one for her. And so they agree to wed, even though their match appears to have been made somewhere hotter than heaven ...
Ellie never dreamed she'd marry a stranger, especially one with such a devastating combination of rakish charm and debonair wit. She tries to keep him at arm's length, at least until she discovers the man beneath the handsome surface. But Charles can be quite persuasive -- even tender -- when he puts his mind to it, and Ellie finds herself slipping under his seductive spell. And as one kiss leads to another, this unlikely pair discovers that their marriage is not so inconvenient after all ... and just might lead to love.

Charming book.......2007-10-02
Eleanor Lyndon is minding her own business when Charles Wycombe, the Earl of Bilington falls out of a tree very drunk. Both Charles and Ellie are trying to deal with there own problem when they realize by getting married will slove their them. They marry but they don't really know each other. But dark forces that could end it for them.
"Brighter than the Sun" is the first book that I read by Julia Quinn and I really liked it. Ms. Quinn gives her readers charming characters and romance. This was the first book by Ms. Quinn, but it will not be the last.
is this a joke?.......2007-09-15
having read many julia quinn books in the past, i was looking for one i hadn't had the pleasure of reading before, and came across brighter then the sun. wow, this was awful. so awful i never finished it i was THAT bored. [and i will finish anything, just because i can't bear to leave something incomplete.] i am really stunned that this was published or that julia herself considered it worthy of her name and talent. such a disappointment and waste of time. sigh:(
Not Ms. Quinn's best..........2007-07-03
I was going to give this book 2 stars, but added and extra one, because for all the deficiencies, JQ really IS great writer. Her dialogue is witty and positively sparkles.
That said- Ellie is an annoying shrew and the hero Charles was like every other hero in every other JQ book. And I have read them ALL. (With the exception of Phillip I guess, in Sir Phillip with Love but I digress. )
JQ uses as her plot, one of my pet peeves with Regency romances. We have a simple country Miss, with no prospects and no funds (that she can legally get her hands on , since we ARE in the 19th century where women were not equals). She and the Charles- a Duke- enter a marriage of convenience yet somehow she wants to control their relationship. She made a clear stipulation that Charles should not kiss/try to seduce her...because he does not 'love' her... What is up with superimposing 21st century romantic ideals in a god damned mariage of convenience JQ?! Where does LOVE come in a marraige of convenience? And why would Ellie think she can refuse her husband the marital bed ? And why would he agree ??
Who are these people , and why are they masquerading as Regency people ?
Gah!
Really Great Read!.......2007-05-25

An account of the remarkable scientists who discovered that nuclear fission was possible and then became concerned about its implications. Index. Translated by James Cleugh.
Customer Reviews:
Light from a different direction!.......2006-07-16
Recently, in theatres in London and New York, the public was treated to the drama "Copenhagen," by British playwright Michael Frayn, and it revisited the theme of this now old book. The play was about a visit in September 1941 by the then young German physicist Werner Heisenberg to his mentor and dear friend Niels Bohr in Nazi-occupied Denmark. So a detail in a bigger picture, but still a key detail!
The wider subject of Robert Jungk's book is a biographical sketch of the pioneers in nuclear physics, the individual scientist who built the atomic bomb (the time before Hiroshima and Nagasaki), or whose theories were instrumental. The debate about the history, the science, and its implications of the nuclear bomb started after World War II, and it is important to remember that nuclear scientists worked on both sides of this conflicts. Now with hindsight, the Cold War, and nuclear proliferation have taken centre stage, but back in 1956 when Robert Jungk's book first appeared, World War II was still casting a big shadow on events and on the debate about nuclear deterrence. In my opinion Robert Jungk's book was one of the first serious attempts at a general account on what was clearly a watershed in history, a series of events that are shaping our lives even today. Since 1956, Robert Jungk's book was reprinted many times, and many more related books appeared.
Jungk's book is interesting in that it paints a vivid portrait of such scientists as Robert Oppenheimer, Werner Heisenberg, Niels Bohr, and other leading physicists at the time, and on both sides of that conflict.
What is interesting now is to view Robert Jungk's book in the light of Michael Frayn's play, and especially in light of newly released papers on the Niels Bohr archives in 2002, following the wide attention given to Michael Frayn's version of the 1941 meeting in Copenhagen. The 2002 addition to Niels Bohr's archives is a deposit comprising documents either dictated or written by Niels Bohr referring to what was said at the fateful 1941 meeting.
Michael Frayn's play makes it clear that the two Bohr and Heisenberg were very close both scientifically and personally, and that the 1941 meeting changed all of that. Both men were devastated!
Heisenberg was a leading scientific advisor to the German government in post WWII Europe; and yet he spent the rest of his life attempting to put his spin on his war work; his work on a nuclear bomb for Hitler, or perhaps rather denying these efforts. Niels Bohr who died in 1962 had been extraordinarily tight lipped about his meeting with Heisenberg in 1941. So while the newly released letters supplement and confirm previously published statements of Bohr's recollections of the meeting, especially those of his son, Aage Bohr, this part of the story is not well known, and especially not to Robert Jungk. The letters are from Niels Bohr to Heisenberg, and they are interesting for many reasons, not least of which is that they were never mailed, and so their contents were never known to Heisenbrg. Quoting from one of Bohr's letters to Heisenberg: "--- I think that I owe it to you to tell you that I am greatly amazed to see how much your memory has deceived you in your letter to the author [Robert Jungk] of the book ["Brighter than a thousand suns"],---." Review by Palle Jorgensen, July 2006.
A little dry but good.......2005-04-01
Robert Jungk’s Brighter than a Thousand Suns encompasses one of the most recent subjects in Physics, Atomic Energy. He begins by describing the Environment the most prominent physicists were educated in, Gottingen University in Germany, although an insight into the lives of these emerging physicists was well depicted, I felt that it was little too much background information and not enough explanations of the developments these budding physicists generated. The pattern of excessive background information seems to continue throughout the book, but there is much valuable information to be had throughout the book. The book covers everything from the plethora of atomic physicists sprouting after the First World War to the Manhattan Project and J. Robert Oppenheimer’s trial that removed him from his lofty position at the head of America’s Atomic Energy Commission. This book presents good information, but it is not very accessible as it was written by a German Physicist and later translated into English, and an immense interest in the topic is required to appreciate it.
Illuminated portrait !.......2004-10-29
This a clear and terrible book. It can be considered as one of the most complete compelling and passionate works about the most chilling decision in the mankind story . the moral and politic story of the atomic scientists or the underground account of what happened among stage sceneries while the atomic finding and the construction of the atomic weapons . An impressing gallery where you will finf the famous and glorious names osuch as Niels Bohr , Oppenheimer , Heisenberg , Rutherford, Enrico Fermi , Szilard , Dirac , Joliot Curie , Kapitza , Otto Hahn , Weizacker their political approach , from Hitler to Roosvelt and Truman .
Jungk presnts us the collective drama of the atomic energy and the responsibility of the scientists who wishing or not they finally finished accepting the tragicg fate and the ethical dilemma .
The fir4st part is an account which reveals how gradually at early 1939 , many of them were frightened about the final consequences of their discovery , but in the other hand the suspect the german scientists could be capable of making the expected weapon under Hitler service .
Then the author explores the work of the German scientists around the atom fission , the intensive and unfinished stages work in U.K. and U.SA. under the Oppenheimer control, Los Alamos review and the famous July 16 , the countless Szilard and Frank efforts for preventing and avoid the use of the Atomic Bomb over Japan absolutely useless as all we know .
This book shows us how the science has created its own world having lost of any moral force to oppose the development of the most destructive weapons .
The moral crossroad of a notable group of men who escaping from a demolisher oppressive nazi regime fell under a new form of destructor power of its own individuality , freedom and conscience
To have an absolute domain of that complex web I recommend to acquire The great decision whose author is Michael Amrine..
A must for any kind of reader , no matter your job is .
Very interesting and easy to read.......2003-10-31
This book was written nearly 50 years ago in the 1950's, so naturally some of the stories are incomplete with todays hindsight, but I wish I'd read this book 20 years ago. It is extremely well written, and full of fascinating anecdotes. Although I am familiar with many of the characters & stories, there was something new for me in every chapter, for example the insights into Oppenheimer in Germany before WWII. It would be wonderful if a revised version could be published incorporating the story of the Soviet Atom Scientists.
Historical Revisionism at its worst.......2002-08-25
While an easy to read book, Jungk presents some false information that depreciates the value of the book.
The first is the impression that Von Weisacker and other German scientists attempted to give to the post war world, that they were not really trying to build a bomb, but were merely interested in nuclear power. This is refuted by Jeremy Bernstein, in his book "Hitler's Uranium Club." The historical record shows that there were many memorandums sent to the German Military, by the scientists, about the possibility of producing an atomic bomb.
The more serious misstatement however, is about Klaus Fuchs' espionage on the Manhattan Project which was the most damaging espionage committed by any of the atomic spies of that era. Jungk claims that Fuchs decided to spy for the Soviet Union when he learned about plans to bomb Hiroshima. This is so off base that one has to question Jungk's scholarship or motives. Here is why: Fuchs began spying for the Soviets in 1941 in Britain, before Pearl Harbor and before there was even a Manhattan Project. The decision to acutally bomb Hiroshima was made in 1945. None of the scientists know what the targets were.
This is such a huge distortion of the facts that it should be mentioned in any review of this book. The book has lots of details but if you buy it, beware of some of the downright distortions of history. A better choice is Richard Rhodes's book, "The Making of the Atomic Bomb".

misinformation in print.......2004-04-13
This is a terrible book. It is sloppy; for example the Italian nobelist Segre becomes Segra; the authors claim to be experts on uranium separation but in attempting to describe the operation of a calutron they actually describe a centrifuge. The worst offense, however is the intellectually dishonest intermingling of historical facts and pure conjecture on the part of the writers without giving the reader any way of knowing what is what. An obvious example is the statement that Clinton bombed iraq to draw attention away from the Monika Lewinsky scandal. Certainly he did order the bombing; but why he did so neither the authors nor anyone outside that administration know. The mouthing of extremist propaganda is no substitute for good journalism. Unfortunately this level of reporting is repeated over and over again in this volume.
More relevant than ever!.......2003-07-25
This book was published in 1999 in Britain by two distinguished British journalists, based on the testimony of Iraqi informants, many of whom were in Saddam's inner circle. Particularly painful are the copiously documented failures of the Clinton Administration to deal with the very real nuclear threat Saddam's weapons program posed to the United States and its allies.
Now that political opponents of President Bush hope to persuade the American people that there was never any threat from Saddam Hussein's weapons programs (e.g., contrary to the lying one-star review below, the IAEA never declared Iraq "nuclear-free," but instead stated in its 1998 interim report that it was "prudent to assume" that Iraq had retained prohibited weapons, including material for making nuclear weapons), this book is more topical than ever.
Beating a dead horse.......2003-05-02
Given that the IAEA declared Iraq nuclear-free in 1998 and thus far nobody has found any evidence that Saddam restarted the program after the inspectors left the country this book is more than ridiculous.
The sensationalist and flatly biased authors ignore the fact that Saddam's nuclear program evolved and almost reached its peak during the Reagan and Bush years but was completely dismantled during Clinton's tenure. Even if Saddam had wanted to nuke the US --which itself is a rather silly allegation-- he never had the means to do it.
If these so-called journalists think they know it better they should present their arguments to the IAEA or to the coalition forces who are now inspecting Iraq. I wonder what they could achieve.
This book is a good read for those who are either paranoid or pathologically anti-Clinton or both but not for those who really want to know what happened to Iraq's nuclear capability during the 90s.
Connecting the dots........2002-05-16
I recommend this book as an adjunct to Robert Baer's See No Evil. This book was written in 1999, well before Baer's book. A careful reader will realize that Baer is mentioned but not by name. There is no great political insight contained in this work but for anyone who has been following the UNSCOM fiasco and the general mishandling of Saddam Hussein and his nuclear program, this will connect the dots. Hussein is a thug with absolutely no compunction about killing anyone anytime to pursue his madman's dreams. This book been criticized as being too anecdotal but I believe that is because of the nature of the information. There is no doubt that sources are being protected. If this book doesn't scare you just a little you are either one tough customer or brain dead.
Unfinished business in Iraq.......2001-04-07
"Brighter than the Baghdad Sun" chronicles Saddam Hussein's 25-year effort to build an atomic bomb, as well as his successful efforts to develop chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction.
The book also covers in gruesome detail how the Iraqi regime smashes all internal resistance using torture, imprisonment, and assassination. (Although, one sometimes wonders what their sources were for supposed conversations with the Iraqi leadership -- given that most everyone who betrays Saddam ends up dead soon after.)
The drawn out confrontation with the UN weapons inspection teams is detailed as well. That these teams operated for as long as they did is amazing when one sees how the Iraqis were always one step ahead of them (due to a Russian team member who briefed his nation's diplomats, who in turn told Baghdad). In the end, the UN teams left Iraq and Iraq managed to keep some of its nuclear weapons equipment intact.
By the end of this book the reader is convinced that Saddam Hussein will stop at nothing to develop nuclear weapons.
The book falls short of five stars because some of the conversations used to enliven the book are not adequately footnoted (the authors want to protect privacy and lives -- they could have at least characterized the source of the information). There is also some redundancy.
