3 out of 5 stars honest, interesting but uninspiring.......2000-07-06

If you're looking for the biography of a great man, a hero, this isn't it. But one of the good things that has come from a culture where anyone can publish a book is that you're almost certain to be able to hear both sides of any story. Barkley has been pilloried by the media for his antics; it is interesting as a fan of sport to read Barkley's account of events and his role in them.

Other than those details, the book's contents are not going to surprise you unless you're unaware of how poor black people grow up in the rural South. The requisite funny anecdotes are there, along with a pro's insights into the game of basketball. But if you're looking for a biography that will inspire you, look elsewhere.

    Book Description

Danielle Steel's forty-seventh bestselling novel is very much about the tides of our times, changes and responsibilities in the workplace pull two people in different directions, sweeping them into new lives and changed worlds----.

    Irresistible Forces

For fourteen years, Steve and Meredith Whitman have sustained a marriage of passion and friendship - despite the demands of two all-consuming careers.  Meredith, an investment banker, has achieved partnership in one of Wall Street's top firms.  Steve A gifted physician, chose an urban trauma ward over the big money he could have earned elsewhere.  The only thing missing in their lives is children.  Steve longs for them.  But Meredith keeps putting off motherhood, saying she isn't ready and doesn't have time.  Not yet.  Especially now that she has been offered an extraordinary opportunity, a chance to reach for the brass ring - in San Francisco, three thousand miles away.  Meredith is thrilled and surprised when Steve urges her to accept a top position at an exciting young high-tech company.  Traditionally, men's careers forces families to move to new cities, compelling their wives to abandon friends, home, and lives to follow.  But Steve is more than willing to uproot himself. Saying he'll join her as he can find a new job himself, they can begin their family at last.

Neither Steve nor Meredith had reckoned on the frustrations of a bi-coastal marriage, as Steve's job keeps him in New York for months longer than planned.  Weekends together, their lifeline, fall prey to their hectic schedules.  Alone in San Francisco, Meredith is spending long hours at the office with her boss, charismatic entrepreneur Callan Dow.  Steve working late shifts at the hospital, grabbing an occasional dinner with a new colleague, a doctor raising a daughter on her own.  Almost unnoticed, Steve and Meredith have begun living separate lives in increasingly separate worlds.  And despite the best of intentions, irresistible forces begin to tear their lives and hearts apart.

With unerring insight, Danielle Steel explores what happens when lives that fit together like delicately balanced puzzles are shifted, changed, and drift apart.  Only time can tell who and what they will become as life sweeps them onward and deposits them on new, sometimes frightening, and often exciting shores.  Who survives, is at the core of Irresistible Forces.

    4 out of 5 stars 6 sci-fi/romance stories.......2007-07-30

I imagine a lot of people will buy this book simply for the Lois McMaster Bujold story 'Winterfair Gifts', which shows the wedding of Miles Vorkosigan and Ekaterin from the viewpoint of Roic, one of Miles's armsmen. We also have a side romance between Roic and Taura and a mystery as to whom is trying to injure Ekaterin before the wedding. It's a great little story full of all the usual Bujold magic and probably the reason that most readers are buying this anthology. It's worth the cover price, too, as an enjoyable romp and giving more depth to Taura and Roic who have featured in previous episodes in the Vorkosigan saga. Definitely one to enjoy for Bujold fans and works well on its own for those new to her writing.

But there are five others stories in this collection as well. Perhaps none of them are as good as the Bujold story but they are still worth reading and their variety adds to the enjoyment. It's a chance to dip into the writing styles of other writers (some of whom are better known for historical romance books rather than sci-fi) and gives a good overview of the different kinds of stories in the romantic sci-fi genre.

'The Alchemical Marriage' by Mary Jo Putney is a historical story which introduces her Guardians, subjects of three (to date) full length novels. The Guardians are magicians with various skills including weather working who try to use their skills for good. Sir Adam Macrae (ancestor of some of the Macraes in the later books) is in the Tower of London at the behest of Queen Elizabeth because he is a Scot who supported Mary Queen of Scots. However he is granted freedom because his weather working skills are required to turn back the Spanish Armada which is preparing to attack England. He is taken to the home of Isabel de Cortes, a Jewish refugee from Spain, who is also a mage although not of the weather as it is thought if they work together they will be more successful. Macrae finds himself without enough power to work the weather on his own and has to learn to trust Isabel and to gain more of an understanding about the consequences to Scotland of the Armada, he is unable to assume that it is only England that will be harmed. It's an enjoyable story without too great depth but with some appealing characters, particularly Isabel whose quiet wisdom and willingness to help is well written.

'Stained Glass Heart' by Catherine Asaro is set on a world where technology had been forgotten and is only now being remembered. Vryn is a Prince but he works as a farmer and enjoys dancing in secret - no men on the planet dance but his mother, an off-worlder, was a famous dancer and she and then dancing masters have trained him. He loves dance, he loves farming and he loves a neighbour's daughter Lily, but it appears Vryn can't have all he wants when a dynastic marriage is arranged for him. Vryn precipiates a potential crisis by his actions and has to evaluate what is most important to him when he is offered the chance to dance. The story is slightly twee and in some ways I was disappointed that Vryn made the decisions he did - one wonders how good a decision a fourteen year old can really make. However the descriptions of the planet and of the wildlife were enjoyable, as was the thought of the culture shock that people from that planet might find elsewhere. It's a good read but not really great and whiny teenagers who are rather selfish in thoughts can get a little irritating.

'Skin Deep' by Deb Stover has a very amusing central event - Nick Riley who died two years ago is sent back to earth to make up for some of his wrongdoings by helping his widow Margo to find happiness. Unfortunately for Nick he returns to earth in the body of a beautiful woman and very soon he discovers the man that Margo is supposed to marry was her first love with whom Nick spent his entire youth in competition. Jared is an undercover DEA agent and he meets Margo again when she is a journalist covering events at a nightclub where Jared is performing as a male dancer. There are several misunderstandings between Jared and Margo that need to be cleared up before Nick can finally get all the way into heaven. There are some fun moments in this lighthearted story and it's an enjoyable read.

'The Trouble with Heroes' by Jo Beverley is a fascinating story about a planet named Gaia colonised from Earth which experiences a strange new problem of energy forms turning people into ashes. Within the community there have always been a few 'fixers', people able to heal physical injuries and mend crockery, that kind of thing. Dan Rutherford, a fixer, begins to investigate further what his powers mean when the uprising of the blighters is causing people to leave their towns to avoid the frontline. His friend Jen, although afraid of some aspects of the world that Dan is explaining to her, seeks to try to understand what needs to be done. When it appears all the fixers have been killed in turning back the tide of blighters she carries on with her life. However when Dan Fixer returns to their town he is no longer welcome, people being afraid that he may have been changed in some ways by the blighters. Dan talks to Jen about what had to happen to win the war and she gains a new understanding of the nature of power and responsibility. This story is set in a great world and the events that take place are excellently described, particularly the way that Jen begins to understand what Dan knows and feels.

The final story, 'Shadows In The Wood' by Jennifer Robertson was by far the shortest inclusion in this collection. It mixes the Robin Hood and Maid Marian stories with Merlin and King Arthur when Robin and Marian find someone who is sealed into a tree and discover that a lot of the old legends have more reality to them than they had expected. They have a short quest to do on behalf of Merlin before continuing their lives in Sherwood Forest. This story was rather light and, although well written, I felt it was a bit short on actual plot and interest.

In conclusion this is a better-than-average collection of stories. They are all fairly romance based so plain sci-fi readers might find them a little irritating. However the variety of worlds, times and plots make it an interesting read for fans of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars Irreristible Stories Indeed.......2007-05-12

Great read. If you enjoy romances with a slight twist you will love these stories. Very hard to put down.

2 out of 5 stars not worth the trouble.......2007-02-07

Six stories; the Bujold is all right, maybe even four stars in its own right, but the rest of them range from mediocre to dreck, with "Skin Deep" being a notably low point. Bad story--obvious storyline, unconvincing dialogue, nonsensical plotting, embarrassing attempts at humor, random "surprise!" elements. Full disclosure here: I like Bujold, and SF as a genre, and not romance as a genre. If you're a Vorokosigan completist, you might want the book for "Winterfair Gifts", but otherwise don't bother.

4 out of 5 stars I just had to say something..........2007-01-16

I looked over the reviews here of a book I enjoyed, and saw that the majority didn't care for Ms Putney's story. As it was my favorite among them, along with Winterfair gifts, I wanted to share my opinion that perhaps Ms Putney's story didn't work well with the mostly science fiction tales here, and regular readers of science fiction (of which I am not one) might not appreciate her brand of storytelling. I know that she has written a follow up novel, and I have set that aside to read when I have more time (I am a returning student, and my spare time is sadly taken up with reading less enjoyable fare). I also think that some reviews were harshly critical of the brevity of the stories, but after all, what do you expect from a romance story that is one of perhaps 4-6 tales in the same space used for a typical novel by these authors? If you don't care for two persons hooking up within the space of a few pages, I would suggest that you stop buying these compilations.

3 out of 5 stars Bujold Makes this Book Worthwhile.......2006-11-26

This collection of short stories is a group of SF romance stories by three science fiction authors and three romance authors. I suppose they are trying to build an audience for both genres. I bought the book only for the Lois McMaster Bujold story, "Winterfair Gifts" set in her Vorkosigan universe. As with almost all Bujold's works, this story is well worth the price of the book all on its own. Bujold fans will enjoy this story featuring Sergeant Taura and Armsman Roic with Mile's impending wedding as the backdrop. It's a solid piece of work and makes me miss Bujold's writing about these characters as she tromps off to write fantasy and quasi-fantasy romance novels.

The rest of the stories are bit uneven and I would not recommend the book, frankly, without the Bujold story.

Having had 46 previous bestsellers, Danielle Steel knows a good plot recipe when she's got one--namely, take a smart, beautiful woman who is dissatisfied with her loving but stuffy husband, add a romantic, usually older man with a true appreciation of her inner soul, then sit back and watch the melodrama unfold. In this latest novel, our heroine Meredith Whitman is a career-driven investment banker, our husband Steve a sweet physician, and our other man, Cal Dow, a high-tech business Midas. When Cal offers Meredith the perfect job in San Francisco, Steve encourages her to move across country, and promises to follow her as soon as he can. Meredith and Steve's marriage begins to crack under the pressures of the distance, and soon "irresistible forces" come into play. Don't expect profundity, although Danielle Steel can make even the most sordid affairs seem romantic, or at least entertaining. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

1 out of 5 stars My first AND LAST Danielle Steele book.......2007-09-18

Wow! This is hands down the worst book I have wasted time on in years. I picked it up at the library, figuring I'd give Danielle Steele a try and couldn't be more unimpressed. This book was repetitive, slow, and appears to be headed toward a climax of adulterous affairs (nope, I haven't finished it...yet...or maybe ever). About the only positive I can give it is that I really like the character Steve.

    5 out of 5 stars Irresistible Forces.......2006-05-11

One of Danielle Steel's more romantic stories that I just could not put down until I was finished... Steve, an Emergency Room physician and Merrie, a successful business woman, were married and lived a comfortable and convenient life together in New York city. As soon as Merrie starting traveling with Callan Dow and his high tech company based out of California, friction started in their marriage. Because of her incredible talent, Merrie was soon offered a full-time position by Cal as the company's CFO. After consulting Steve she accepted the position and the two started a long distance marriage. Through the ups and downs of their new circumstances, Merrie and Steve soon realize that their marriage was not as strong as they had previously thought. After much angst, a decision is made and several lives are affected. There was a greater force guiding them toward happiness.

2 out of 5 stars Just a waste of my time.......2005-08-08

It seems that Ms. Steete has really lost her touch. I was frustrated at the very slow pace with little or no character development until the last few pages when we learn that apparently it is okay with Ms. Steele to cheat on your spouse.

2 out of 5 stars This can't be Danielle Steel!.......2005-04-07

This is the worst book I've ever read by Danielle Steel. I kept looking at the author's name to be sure it was hers. So boring, so repetitive, I got so frustrated with reading the same information over & over just arranged differently. She has some wonderful books out but pass on this one.

3 out of 5 stars Not her best.......2003-12-30

I agree with the other reviewers in saying that this was not one of her best books. It just seemed so predictable & boring. The writing could use some work too, saying the same thing over & over gets frustrating to read- I'd rather have a shorter book! The only thing I did enjoy was the characters- some you love & some you love to hate. But if you're looking for something good by Ms. Steel- I'd recommend The Wedding, Star or Heartbeat instead.

    Book Description

This book is about - but not only about - Napster. The story of Napster is important in its own right, but its legacy even more so. The phenomenon that surrounds Napster has highlighted the extraordinary potential for the mass mobilisation of consumer and community power. This irresistible force - the underground Internet - has blown apart conventional models of doing business.

Merriden charts the birth of Napster and its genesis in Internet music communities. He describes in detail how big businesses felt complacent enough to ignore Napster, only to turn on it when the truth about their business models dawned. As the big companies got nasty, Bertelsmann and Thomas Middelhof broke ranks and did a deal with Napster.

The rapid spread in Napster's popularity has made many businesses sit up and notice. And it wasn't just because of the court room battles highlighted by the media every day. Some estimates put the peak number of Napster users at around 58 million. Hard to ignore the cries of the masses. Through the aftermath of those bloody court rooms, Napster has left a lasting impact on the future of e-business. This legacy affects more than music and record companies. In irresistible forces, Trevor Merriden shows how all businesses who have an interest in the Internet should pay attention. The influence on business of file sharing and peer-to-peer technology will be profound in the years ahead.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good but not outstanding.......2001-12-18

Anyone who has used Napster (and it would be tough to find someone who hasnt!!!) will always have wondered what motivated shawn fanning (and his friends) to create Napster. Finally there is a book which deals with the topic. IRRESISTABLE FORCES does a concise job of charting Napster's creation, the near-fanaticism of its creators, Shawn Fanning's idealism, how the record companies woke up to the threat, and how they acted.

But thats not made me like this book. It also takes a peek at many of the pertinent post-napster issues - the future of peer-to-peer computing, online file sharing etc. The BMG-Napster venture is also talked about, and even the "children" of Napster find a mention. And all this from a unbiased point of view, giving a flavour of how all the concerned parties feel/felt.

There is only one thing I do not like about this book - and that is - for most of the issues - it does not do more than just take a peek. All the topics are dealt with too much brevity. I would have really loved this book had it been more detailed.

However, all said and done - the book is very good - and I gleaned a lot of information from it - only I was left thirsting for more. So I am going to go and get the other book in the market on Napster.

The bottom line?? For those who want wide-ranging information on Napster - this book will do for starters>

O'Brien--

Local rancher Margaret Clemens is taking a chance on happiness, and going after what she wants for a change. And what she wants is marriage to cowboy, Matt Eilers. Regardless of what her friends and family say, and despite all the rumors, Margaret wants Matt anyway. Oh . . . and she plans on having his baby, too.

Please join me for my third -- and final -- visit to Buffalo Valley, North Dakota. This town exists only in my imagination, but its spirit and sense of community are definitely real. Buffalo Valley resenbles many places in my family's history, and perhaps in yours. If you've been to Buffalo Valley before, I invite you to come and visit the friends you've met their; if not, prepare to make some new ones.

Buffalo Valley, North Dakota, has become a good place to live -- the way it used to be, thirty or fourty years ago. People here are feeling confident about the future again.

Stalled lives are moving forward. People are taking risks -- on new ventures and on lifelong dreams. On Happiness. And one of those people is local rancher Margaret Clemens, who's finally getting what she wants most. Marriage to cowboy Matt Eilers. Her friends dont think Matt's such a bargain; neither did her father. But Margaret's aware of Matt's reputation and his flaws. She wants him anyway. And she wants his baby . . .

I have enjoyed "Always Dakota" and the two previous books of the Trilogy. I liked how Debbie Macomber kept story lines for all of her characters that began in the first book and continued with them throughout the final book of the trilogy, "Always Dakota".

              5 out of 5 stars A connection to home!.......2002-02-23

This series was a connection to my childhood. I grew up in northern Minnesota. I would go to Grand Forks to the movies and hang out as a teen. I would give anything to go back again. North Dakota is everything this author says it is. I recommend her books to everyone who loves to read.

              5 out of 5 stars Always Dakota.......2001-12-17

I quickly read all 3 books. The anticapation of the third killed me. This was my first experiance w/ this author and have now read most of her books. Always Dakota wrapped up everything you learned about everyone in this quaint little town of Buffalo Valley. A town I enjoyed so much i longed for a Buffalo Valley of my own! I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. Im sure they will leave you longing for the series to continue. They are a great escape into an imaginary town with people I wish I knew.

Jan Jordan is having a birthday—a birthday she’s been dreading since she learned to count...surely life can be nothing but downhill from here.

Kenny Pearson is old enough to know better, but he doesn’t care. As long as he can still knock a softball out of the park and brag about it over a beer with the guys afterward, life is good.

Ida Bauer is old and doesn’t mind saying so. Her husband is gone and so are most of her friends—and she has to face it—soon she will be too. Does she have anything left to offer in the time she has left?

God has a plan for all these people...if only they will listen.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner by this author! .......2005-06-21

This book inspired me to look into my own heart and realize there was a message I needed to hear. All of Roxanne's books are truly wonderful and i can promise you will not be disappointed if you take the time to read them.

4 out of 5 stars Roxanne Henke Welcomes us to Brewster.......2005-04-14

We plan and God answers with a nudge, reminding us that He is in charge. That He knows what is best for us and that it is so much more than we ever imagined it could be.

In Always Jan, Roxanne Henke welcomes us to Brewster, North Dakota, the kind of town where most people would love to live and raise a family. It's a place where people know your name and reach out to help each other. It's where folks gather at the restaurant or gas station to gossip and commiserate with each other. It's a place, like most others, only smaller, where the inhabitants have hopes and dreams, love their friends, family and neighbors and share the sadness of broken dreams and deep hurts. It's also a place where God lives.

Jan believes she is "getting old" and losing her beauty. Kenny owns the local gas station but there isn't enough money for his growing family. Ida, Kenny's aunt, values independence, health and a vital future. Each character experiences a "challenge" that they didn't expect and didn't want. Henke weaves each character's life dilemma through the lives of the others in a seamless manner. Jan, Kenny and Ida are each broken, in their own way, and each must learn through their personal trials that God's plan is the best plan.

There was a time when I didn't enjoy Christian fiction because it wasn't real life. It seemed that life in Christian fiction was always "happy ever after," if only we believed. Real life isn't always perfect, even when we trust and believe.

Roxanne Henke's novel Always Jan approaches life in a "real" way: real people, with real problems, who struggle to live their faith. I smiled, I squeezed the tears threatening to break free and I kept reading. I didn't want the story to end because I felt I knew these people and I liked them, "warts" and all. I can't wait to read her other novels. If you haven't read Roxanne Henke's novels, please do so and "Welcome to Brewster...it's a good place to call home."

5 out of 5 stars This could be my favorite Roxanne Henke book yet!.......2005-03-29

Always Jan really got to me. I have enjoyed every book Roxanne Henke has written, even learning something while I experienced a terrific, page-turning read. But this one hit home in a special way. Maybe it is because of my age - and the book is about aging; maybe it is because of a close relative's life which rather parallels Ida's in the story. I'm not sure. But I found this book to be so much more than just a wonderful read.

The story is told in multiple, first person, points of view - a style that well suits Henke's clear, concise writing. Jan: the beauty who is fearful of aging, Kenny: the sports-playing dad who wants to replay those high school days, and Ida: Kenny's elderly Aunt who struggles to live alone as her health declines and loneliness threatens to overcome. Roxanne weaves these three lives together in a beautiful tale that grabs your heart and won't let go until the last line.

I absolutely loved it! And recommend this wonderful book to every person who likes to read the best in inspirational lit.

              5 out of 5 stars Aging.......2005-02-18

This book beautifully shares the truth that "getting older will be, and is, a joy as long as you do it with the Lord at your side!"

              5 out of 5 stars Good stuff!.......2005-02-10

Having read all of Roxanne's books, I looked forward to this one and was not disappointed. Roxy has a way of making you see her characters as the person living next door or down the street. Hopefully you have all had an "Ida Bauer" in your life--or will be an Ida Bauer to someone else. One of the most profound messages was given by one of the lesser characters (I won't go into it because it would give you too much of the storyline) so you can see Roxy develops her characters well. Lessons on aging, on friendship, on unconditional love, on giving someone a chance, on "glory days"...very well done! I'm a librarian in a small town and can't keep the other books in the series on the shelf!

5 out of 5 stars Enthusiastically recommended reading.......2007-08-05

Edited for publication by Paula M. Nelson (Professor of History and Chairperson of the Department of social Sciences, University of Wisconsin, Platteville), "Sunshine Always: The Courtship Letters Of Alice Bower And Joseph Gossage Of Dakota Territory" was compiled by Maxwell Van Nuys, Alice Bower Gossage's nephew and the family historian. Alice Bower lived in Vermillion, South Dakota, where she occasionally worked as a typesetter and cared for her younger siblings. Joseph Gossage lived in Rapid City, South Dakota, where he founded the 'Rapid City Journal' -- what would eventually become the second largest newspaper in the state. It was his need for a good typesetter that introduced him to Alice in 1880 and the beginning of their remarkable courtship which was carried out through letters conforming to the strict social formality of the time. The letters provide a unique and engaging 'window in time' into an American yesteryear as we read of their hopes, fears, dreams, and beliefs during a time of dramatic development within the country and their own responses to hard times (including a flood sweeping away Alice Bower's home and Joseph Gossage's struggles to build his newspaper). Here is the riveting, self-described story of two young people whose communications were to lead first to love, and then to marriage. "Sunshine Always" is enthusiastically recommended reading and a welcome contribution to both academic and community library American Biography and American History collections.
