Book Description
In 1975, at the age of forty, Richard Raskind, a renowned eye surgeon and highly ranked amateur tennis player, "died," and Renée Richards was "born," in what was to become the most public and highly scrutinized sex reassignment to date. It was not until Renée Richards was discovered playing in an amateur tennis tournament that the world took notice. Extensive media coverage and criticism thrust Renée reluctantly into the spotlight, sparking an intense public debate over her private life. Now, at seventy-two, Richards looks back and speaks frankly about all aspects of her complicated and often notorious life in this eye-opening, thought-provoking memoir.
Richards' honest and compelling narrative explores the dichotomy between the successful life she lived as Dr. Richard Raskind, who seemed to have everything (devoted friends, a beautiful wife and son, a stellar record of academic and professional achievement, and outstanding athletic ability), and a secret life of struggle with a drive that could not be suppressed, even by years of psychotherapy and the force of a considerable will.
Richards takes readers through her difficult decision to undergo surgery and the complex mixture of relief and continued frustration that came with the realization of her new identity. Discussing life after her transformation, Richards candidly relates the details, trials, and pleasures of her romantic life as well as fascinating stories about her tennis career, including her experiences as Martina Navratilova's coach. She also provides an intimate account of her difficult but rewarding relationship with her rebellious son: runaway teenager, high-stakes Vegas gambler, karate champion, and entrepreneur. She describes the deterioration of a once-loving marriage and the challenges of reclaiming her place at the forefront of her demanding medical specialty.
Having lived as a woman almost as long as she lived as a man, Richards draws on a personal history that illuminates thirty years of remarkable change in society's attitude toward gender issues. Her absorbing and inspiring story, at once heartbreaking and uplifting, is a testimony to how far we have progressed in our ability to discuss and accept sexuality in all its iterations, as well as a reminder of how far we still must travel.

Not so interesting.......2007-05-14
The book is not so interesting.
She told us, only the things she wants but nothing more.
It' s very politically correct, but the book is not useful to understand the complex life of transgender people, and the real changement of roles, habits, and so on..that was I aspect from a person who lived 40 years as man and 30 as women.
"No Way Renee" - a very entertaining book........2007-05-14
I enjoyed the book very much. It gave a very insightful understanding into the life of an interesting and accomplished person. Along with with being good resding it made you laugh.
Honest Transgender Issues.......2007-05-10
This autobiography will help you understand the issues transgenders face in our society. This fun book is written openly and honestly.
Honest and engrossing.......2007-04-13
I grew up with the Renee Richards saga in the background and saw an article on this book in People magazine and decided to purchase it. Dr. Richards writes with honesty, humor and intelligence, and I could not put the book down. She has a very compelling story, and it helped me to understand better what transgendered individuals might go through in our society. It was fascinating to read not only about how she reacted to her ordeal but her family members and colleagues. I think she must be a very courageous person and I thank her for writing this and sharing it.
An accidental pioneer.......2007-03-22
"It's people like this who make you realize how little you've accomplished," said satirist Tom Lehrer.
Dr. Renée Richards (aka Dr. Richard Raskind) is a person who knew everybody, hung out in the same social set with millionaires, sports and movie stars, appeared on national talk shows, ... . So if you're looking for some inside, titillating gossip, her readable book No Way Renée covers that too, but she doesn't overkill the issue. She speaks openly and honestly.
During her adventuresome life, Renée Richards pissed away a small fortune on rescuing her son Nick from his own youthful peccadilloes (a bright young man who certainly inherited his father's [ i.e. Renée] absence of humility), and she also traveled the low-paying professional tennis circuit. In a way, you could say she dug her own holes and then made a career of climbing back out of them. She certainly made the whole idea of transsexualism more acceptable to the public. Since the 70s, the medical community has recanted on sexual reassignment policies, so today transsexuals don't capture the headlines the way they once did. She was most fortunate to have her professional medical career to fall back on.
About 1/3 of her book (also co-written by John Ames) is devoted to recapitulating the first 40 or so years of her life. A new generation has since grown up who have never heard of Dr. Renée Richards. So, to understand Renée Richards more thoroughly, I encourage you also to read her first book, Second Serve.
Along the way, she also became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (no shabby achievement, and a fact not stated in her book). She also established a fine professional reputation and has published first-rate research articles on eye surgery. But for her transsexual distractions, I got the feeling she could have become a great surgeon, not just a damned good one.
Did Renée Richards really want to be the spokeswoman for transsexuals? I think not, but she still faced the challenge squarely. Given the choice, she would rather have been a successful surgeon who also happened to be a genetic female. Yet, as a most intelligent and rational man, in that one facet of gender she was driven purely by her emotions to -- above all -- become a woman.
Herein lies the greater question. Renée Richards clearly foresaw the public and private hazards of switching sexes, yet she was compelled to choose this path at the risk of torpedoing her own family and her career. So I don't think she came any closer to answering the question why? (I've had transsexual patients, and I'll be damned if I can come any closer to answering that big question.)
She never regretted having the surgery, yet, she sighs, she never found contentment either as a man with a "Miss Right" nor a "Mr. Right" as a woman. [ref. Interview "The Lady Regrets" in the February 1st , 2007 New York Times.] Even if you ignore her exterior, I still think you will find Renée Richards a fascinating person to know. Read the book.

***HOT***HOT***HOT***.......2007-06-18
Wow! This book was HOT! I never heard of Brenda Hampton before I read this book...a book that I picked up by accident not knowing what it was all about. I could not put this book down until the end, I actually read it in 4 hours. Now that I know who Brenda Hampton is, I intend to read everything she has written...and I'm starting with the first in the Jaylin series. That man is seriously a man I love to hate. I would love to try him on for size but wouldn't want to be in a relationship with him, if you know what I mean.
Coast 2 Coast Readers Review.......2007-05-30
Jaylin Roger is back at it again and it is "My Way Or No Way" did Jaylin get his way or did all that playin' catch up with Mr. Rogers... Does Jaylin still have his playboy ways or did he get crossed up with all those women. Did he marry Nokea or will Jaylin and Stephon fight to the end????? You will have to read this book to see what Jaylin Jerome Rogers is up too and how may more women did he add to his list. Brenda Hampton has added a few new character to the book and spiced it up with a few more twist to the story.
Jaylin's At It Again!!!.......2006-09-08
Jaylin Jerome Rodgers is the light-skinned, cat eyed, brother with a net worth of over 3 million dollars and a d*** that no women can resist. This book picks up where Two's Enough Three's A Crowd ends. Jaylin is in love with two women, Nokea and Scorpio. Scorpio is the mixed breed, bodacious bodied, hot lover that he fell in love with, and Nokea is the petite bodied friend that has held him down for the past ten years. She gave him the best of everything, including her virginity.Jaylin tries to do right by Scorpio this time around but as usual his 9 inch gift has gotten him into more trouble that even HE can handle!! Will Jaylin ever change his womanizing ways and stop chasing p**** like a dog in heat? Will Nokea wake up and smell the coffee? Check this book out. I'm on to part 3!!!
And the saga continues..........2006-07-09
My Way or No Way picks up where Two's Enough Three's A Crowd left off. Nokea made me sick and although I found myself becoming frustrated with Jaylin's womanizing ways, this book is nearly impossible to put down. I was happy to see Jaylin finally come correct with Scorpio but now yet another woman has been added to the mix? Drama would be an unfit description...insanity is more like it. I need to take a few days to catch my breath before diving in to Change Don't Always Come!
Another Hot one!!!.......2006-05-31
I just read part two of the series...and wow, Brenda Hampton did it again. Such a hot and steamy novel!!! I flew through the first in one day. I got through the 2nd the next day and I have just started the 3rd. I don't know what I will do when it's over...I guess have Jaylin withdrawals!!!

Helpful book.......2006-09-19
A quick background..My great-great-grandfather had 3 wives. He was also one of the founders of St. George, Utah. He also built the hand carts that the mormons used for their trek.
I am not a mormon, my mother would not alllow it. My father was baptised mormon, but did not attend the church. Because there was no church where he grew up.
I read the book and learned from it.
I loaned it to the pastor of my church. His mother was dating a mormon. He said it was a very good book, and gave him a lot of insight to the church.
I would read Judy Robertson's book, before I even concered becoming a mormon.

The 'tone' of the book bothered me.......2004-07-13
Robertson describes how her family voluntarily joined the Mormon church, her experience as a woman in the church, and her family's subsequent leaving of the church. While not a difficult read, I found myself rolling my eyes quite a number of times at the `complaining' tone that comes across. It interfered a lot with her credibility with me. For instance, Robertson complains about the different tasks and responsibilities she had in the church (which she voluntarily agreed to take on). I had the impression that she was trying to display a picture of coercion within the church. However, her complaining (or `whining' as other reviewers have described it), combined with a lack of any descriptions that could be considered significantly coercive, failed to convince me that she was made to do much against her will.
That being said, the chapters on the temple ceremony is definitely worth reading. The LDS church considers the temple ordinance ceremony very sacred and thus keeps it quite secret. From my other readings I think the ceremony has been changed somewhat from Robertson's experience. From what I have read, the blood oath and the drama that represents non-LDS pastors as being in cahoots with Lucifer has been changed.
Finally, I think there are other books that do a much better job of describing what it is like to be a member of the Mormon church , and then to leave it. One of the best ones I have read is Suddenly Strangers by Brad and Chris Morin.
Incredible Information.......2003-12-12
I highly recommend this book to all who have an interest in finding out the truth about the seamy side of Latter Day Saints, ie, Mormons. It is a real eye opener. I read it because, several years ago, my daughter became associated with a group of Mormon dancers/performers and was one of the few Christians involved. When I would talk to other parents, who were most kind and solicitous, and ask for details about their religion, they glowed and gushed but never gave me anything really definite, nothing with strength or "meat" to it. They did offer to sponsor me or help me find out more about joining the Mormon faith. In talking to them, I found that there were a large quantity of arguments presented to me as to why Christianity didn't work, but these were very pat and almost the same, word for word, from many mouths. There were offers to give me a copy of the Book of Mormon, which I did read. It seemed disjointed and not logical. I bought "No Regrets" by Judy Robertson, because I needed more information. It confirmed some uneasy suspicions that I had, plus added new knowledge, sometimes quite astounding and frightening, that allowed me to realize why no concrete principles had been laid before me by my Mormon friends. I believe what is written and will recommend this book to any who might ask.
The Horrifying Truth.......2003-08-14
Having Dated a Very Attractive Mormon Woman for 3 months,I was very ignorant of her religion even though I considered myself a Well informed Christian. When she realized she would NEVER convert me(I KNEW JOSEPH SMITH was a FALSE PROPHET) See GALATIANS 1:8,9 she started to open up to the PROSPECT OF Questioning her religion.I gave her this book after I read it & she only made it up to the temple part & RAN TO HER LOCAL BISHOP.She will not speak to me now,Her Bishop told her to stay away. This book is a MUST-READ for anyone that wants to protect themselves and their Loved ones. This is the MOST DECEPTIVE,DESTRUCTIVE Religion of our time and will guarantee you a FAST TRIP TO HELL AT YOUR DEATH. Strong words YES, But the TRUTH must be told! The BIBLE is the ONLY word of GOD!
Alot of Nonsense.......2002-11-08
I read her book three times, so as to try to understand her direction, I had all of the material at my side so I could cross reference all her " Facts ", she truly did not know what she read, If she truly believed when she joined the faith she would not have questioned it. I myself was a " Mormon " even a held a priesthood office, I fell away for my own reasons, was excommunicated at the age of 25 and haven't been back since. Now at the age of 41 and having research and visited many other Christian denominations I still hold true to what I believe and I will go to my death never denouncing the faith nor it's direction. I found throughout my life that the things in life that most scare us, tend to be that which we don't understand. How many have read this book, and not read any of the LDS Churches teachings, There are two sides to every story. Most books that have been written against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints have been done so by people who have been excommunicated for one thing or an other. I deserved to be removed from their membership and I have made my peace with GOD. And in no way hold the LDS church at fault. Some of their membership are not as educated in church direction as they should be and we all can be misguided my man, no matter what church you attend, whether Christian, Muslim, Hindu what have you. So read with a open heart pray about it and if you truly believe you will get an answer. The LDS church is the fastest growing denomination of Christianity for a reason, and in no way can that many people be mislead at one time. My Lord and Savior have caused to many blessing in my life to make me change my heart.... I will carry my Testimony to my grave and beyond. A Catholic Cardinal once said of the LDS church, " That if the LDS church is right and the Catholic church is wrong ( which the LDS church does not teach ) then all others are wrong also because all other churchs stem from the Catholic church and the reformation " No where on this planet will anyone find a book written by any member of the LDS faith that calls any Christian denomination wrong, as all Christians have the truth in the Bible and if we follow it's teaching and call ourselfs followers of Christ we all fall short of Him who we must emulate as for those whose deny a Christ ( Savior ) I Weep for Thee

Poor little girl..always has to follow everyone else's rules. Mommy won't let her sleep in, Daddy makes her eat eggs for breakfast, she can't go play because they are going to grandma's. Finally at grandma's, she gets something she wants: a cookie!
Nice tale showing children that they will not always get their way, that yes, there is someone that does know better (mom and dad) but every once in a while, you will get someting you want. A cookie. Perhaps?

Gee, I wish I could be in Ken's shoes..... as the great Geoff Witcher (The Sultan of Scores) said "What do you know about leaving the typewritter for hot television shoes to become a big league announcer" but despite that -- Ken hits a home run! Great for that baseball nut in your family. Instead of "let's play 2".... it should be "let's buy 2!" (of Ken's book)

Book Description
Brenda Joyce has enthralled millions of readers with her New York Times bestselling novels. Now, join us in the next chapter of her unforgettable storytelling: the Francesca Cahill novels. Step into the glittering world of New York City's high society at the turn of the last century, where murder and pleasure are one and the same, and love becomes the ultimate weapon....Francesca Cahill comes from one of New York's best families. Her mother is a leading socialite, her father, a millionaire. Their expectations for their daughter are simple-- marry well, and soon. But the intrepid and self-styled "Crime-Solver Extraordinaire" has other plans....Francesca discovered she had a penchant for sleuthing when she met Rick Bragg, New York City's powerful and enigmatic Police Commissioner. Together, they solved what was known as the crime of the century. Now, their paths are destined to come together once again, but this time far more dangerously and fatefully. For Francesca is tempted to give in to the desire she and Rick have been resisting. And when Bragg's arch-rival Calder Hart arrives in town, a respectable man is suddenly found dead, and now murder is the name of the game....

Love the Series.......2007-03-14
Although the stories are sometimes a little far-fetched, they are very intriguing. I absolutely love Francesca's character. I read a review of one of the Francesca Cahill novels wherein the reviewer questioned how Fran can supposedly be extremely intellectual, yet then do the most dim-witted, compulsive things. Well, I have met a few people in my life who are extremely intelligent, yet haven't got a lick of common sense. I consider Fran to be that type of person. All of the characters are spell-binding, from the lowliest seamstress to the richest socialite. I purchased and read "Deadly Illusions" and "Deadly Kisses" first and loved them so much that I went back and ordered all of the previous installments in this series and have now started over at the beginning. Keep 'em coming!!!!!!
Fluff Light - With Some Interesting Characters!.......2005-09-21
Francesca Cahill is a member of New York City's social elite at the turn of the 20th century, 1902 to be exact. She lives in a Fifth Avenue mansion, with her parents and older brother, attends glittering society balls and fundraisers, and allows herself, occasionally, to be courted by the town's most eligible bachelors. However, she is a marginal player, at best, in the comings and goings of Manhattan's rich and famous, to her mother's dismay. Francesca is a bluestocking, an unfashionable female intellectual, and is determined to do something with her mind other than plan dinner parties. Unbeknownst to her mother, she has enrolled in Barnard College with aspirations to become a journalist. Recently, however, coinciding with newly appointed police commissioner Rick Bragg's move to New York, Francesca has taken to sleuthing....and her grades are suffering as a result.
"Deadly Love," Brenda Joyce's first mystery in this series, preceding "Deadly Pleasure," introduced the cast of characters who people Francesca's life. Miss Cahill also solves her first crime in book one, a child's kidnapping which could have turned lethal, and she begins what seems to be an intense mutual attraction with the extremely charismatic Commissioner Bragg. I panned this first novel, (barely 2 Stars), so many people, including myself, may wonder why on earth I would bother reading this second installment, which is an improvement, but not by much. It is because, although our heroine is silly, (at times beyond belief), immature, indiscreet, and melodramatic, and the mysteries are filled with too many coincidences to suit my taste, the secondary characters are absolutely fascinating. Their ongoing stories do make these books worth reading - very light reading, mind you!
Francesca had calling/business cards printed by Tiffany reading, "Francesca Cahill, Crime-Solver Extraordinaire, No. 810 Fifth Avenue, New York City, All Cases Accepted, No Crime Too Small." Cute? Not! And she passes these cards out all over town! This is supposedly a brilliant, serious minded young woman of the upper classes, not a merchant's daughter, who wants to keep her sleuthing a secret from her family? I am embarrassed for her and the author.
A recipient of one of these Tiffany embossed cards, Miss Georgette de Labouche, leaves a note for Francesca requesting her immediate assistance on a most urgent matter. The matter turns out to be a dead body, the corpse of Miss Labouche's wealthy, longtime lover. The unhappy woman is more concerned with getting rid of the body than with discovering the identity of the killer. Fran sends Joel, the child pickpocket she has hired as an assistant to get the police. Commissioner Bragg is delighted to see Francesca again, but exasperated to find her involved in yet another crime. The attachment between these two continues to develop, but for some reason, Rick is unable to court her or declare his feelings, except as a friend.
The most interesting part of the book is the introduction of Rick's half brother, the wealthy rake Calder Hart. Actually the man is much more complex, which is why he is such a compelling figure. Both Rick and Calder are illegitimate, with different fathers and the same mother, and they do not get along at all. The relationship between these two, and their individual lives and backgrounds, are fascinating. Evan Cahill, Francesca's older brother, is another engaging character. He is a smart, caring man, but flawed - with a tendency to gamble and accumulate debts. In fact he has got himself in way over his head and owes a fortune. Andrew Cahill, the family patriarch, a savvy businessman and affectionate father, (pulled himself up by the bootstraps), has agreed to pay off the debts only if Evan agrees to marry a young woman he does not love, nor even care to become better acquainted with. His fiancee has unseen depth, however, and is a brilliant artist, but only Francesca is aware of this. Then there is Constance, the beautiful big sister, married to the very handsome British Lord Neil Montrose, who Francesca has discovered "in flagrante" with another woman. The clan's maternal force, Julia Cahill, is an extremely strong character determined to marry-off her children well.
The series' premise is a winner - a society girl/college student sleuth in 1902 NYC. But Ms. Joyce foundered badly in her first novel and has not improved much here. "Deadly Pleasure," the main plot, is not very complex or suspenseful. And PLEASE, if Francesca is supposed to be intelligent, work on her character so that she comes off as a smart young woman with a good head on her shoulders! It seems that more time is spent describing the heroine's wardrobe than developing a suspenseful plot and the principal character. In one instance, the author goes on at length about a peach colored evening gown. On the next page the same dress has mysteriously turned mint green. It seems that Ms. Joyce is churning-out a "Deadly series" novel 3 times a year. The results are formulaic and sloppy. I get angry because the series has such possibilities. Also, fans of light reading do understand the difference between quality and trash. Never underestimate us!
I am still intrigued by the Cahill family and those who touch their lives. Save your time and money with this one. But it is only the second in a series, so perhaps Ms. Joyce will hit her stride. The setting and concept, and certainly the characters, are worth another try. I will let you know after book three - and if there is no great improvement there, I quit!

Not Really a Romance.......2004-08-04
I wanted to read this for the fresh setting and time--New York, 1902. Joyce does a fantastic job of making me see the surroundings, furnishings, sounds and smells. However, halfway through the book something hit me: The [...]the heroine embarrasses herself by continually throwing herself at him. He's told her at least five times in no uncertain terms there can be nothing between them. To my mind, that leaves romance out of the picture.
The dialogue is distracting. Nobody speaks in contractions. It's always "I do not think. I will be going. I hope you are not intending. You do not mean that!" Some other irritating character quirks, such as Francesca constantly "gasping" and in one 3-page scene she wet her lips four times. Why even once, I don't know.
I appreciate the picture she paints of that period in NY history. It's colorful and glamorous to read about. But I agree with other readers that Calder Hart would've made a better "hero" instead of that surly, nasty stiff, Bragg.
Don't miss this one!.......2004-07-09
The book is wonderful. The story was fast paced and at times funny. In addition my absolute favorite character in the series is introduced here. It is a must read book, however I urge readers to read this series in order.
Enjoying this Series.......2003-08-11
This Book was better than the first one. I am hooked on this series.

worth it for greed essay alone.......2001-11-18
Most of this book isn't terribly compelling: I think in their (admirable) quests to avoid religiosity, the authors' ideas tend to be pretty thin. But James Ogilvy's essay on greed is really worth reading: a thoughtful way of approaching the place of desire in our lives, which acknowledges that the outer boundaries of desire head into greed.
"You never know what is enough unless you know what is more than enough", sez Wm. Blake, and that might be a good overview of the point of the essay....
Makes You Think..........2001-09-26
The authors of those passages made me think deeper into the so-called-sins and about the most-probable history that sins were not bad in God's eyes. But merely man-made ideas planted into history to make themselves feel more powerful. I highly recommend this book to anyone. Give it a try.
Wicked Pleasures turned my notions of vice/versa........1999-04-30
I am enjoying some of the seven deadly sins more but questioning what I once thought of as my virtues. Thanks, Robert Solomon, I needed that.
Well written. Well edited. A pleasure to read........1999-04-28
Wicked Pleasures is a collection of well-informed, sometimes irreverant essays that reflect upon the so-called seven deadly sins-- lust, anger, envy, gluttony, greed, pride, sloth-- and in that process explain the hold they have on the moral imagination of Western Christendom for a millennium. Well written. Well edited. A pleasure to read.
