4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good Thriller.......2006-10-02

This was my first Michael Prescott novel and I found it surprisingly enjoyable. The plot was creative, I learned a few things and the suspense kept me raptly reading late into the night. Like most books of this genre, things get a little silly toward the end of the book, and the protagonist is, of course, only a little less accomplished than God, and everything happens within a two-day time span and the universe is saved within a second or two of oblivion, etc. But, knowing in advance that's how most of these books unfold, the reader can just sit back and enjoy the show. I'd say Prescott is a cut above most thriller writers, so I intend now to order the rest of his books through Amazon and enjoy them.

5 out of 5 stars One you won't be able to put down!!.......2004-03-03

I just want to say I love all of Michael Prescott's books. I read his first one, "Come's The Dark", and I had to go out and get all of the others. Once I start one, I can't put it down. This book really has a great twist at the end, I loved it!! I really look forward to his next one, and hope he has another one on the way!!

5 out of 5 stars very suspenseful tale.......2003-12-12

Great story line and interesting plot. Prescott hit a grand slam on this one. This book was such an intense thriller, I read it in two days.

4 out of 5 stars Next!.......2003-01-29

Sometimes, in the course of reading the work of a talented author who thinks up good concepts, knows the mechanics of good storytelling, writes interesting dialogue, and creates compelling characters, one has to wonder how much creative control they actually have and how much better they could've made their book if left to their own expert devices instead of being comprised by editorial micro-managing. I got an inkling of how Alex Kava's light was obscured by the editorial bushel while reading SPLIT SECOND and I couldn't help but speculate on the same thing while reading Michael Prescott's latest thriller (he'd wanted to name it WIPEOUT but the publisher choose the breathtakingly bland NEXT VICTIM).

A woman on the run from the FBI is carrying a canister of VX nerve agent and is intercepted by a serial killer, who then absconds with it and plans to use it on an unsuspecting Los Angeles. This is the best concept in recent fiction since Jan Burke's BONES (2001).

Not all the book's flaws can be blamed on editing, however- as one reviewer rightly posits, Mobius suffers from the talking villain syndrome, whereas the pieces could've come together in a more organic way, through skillful exposition or having Special Agent Tess McCallum, the book's heroine, tell the reader in her POV. Also, in the ATSAC HQ, Tess is actually relieved when it turns out that Mobius has VX in his possession, instead of the ebola that Tess had feared. I don't know of a single human who would ever be relieved to be dealing with VX, surely the deadliest substance ever engineered by Man.

But NEXT VICTIM'S virtues far outweigh its flaws and the characterization of the principals is good enough to garner sympathy for both antagonist and protagonist. and, while it's obligatory for the heroine to engage the villain in the Endgame in which the heroine (of course) wins, Prescott thankfully was able to break away from his usual DIE HARD-esque ending that involves a tall, abandoned/unfinished building to give the reader a more novel denouement.

As usual, I'll be on the lookout for the talented Prescott's next outing, hoping for both a hardcover deal for him and less editorial interference.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner from Michael Prescott.......2003-01-29

Next Victim is the latest work from Michael Prescott. He deserves to be a top seller like Koontz and Connelly, but unfortuantely, he is not. He is a better writer than either of them and he plots rocket along with a crisp determination. Tess McCallum is on the trail of Mobius, a serial killer who worked out of Denver before disappearing and resurfacing in Los Angeles. Tess has a score to settle with Mobius because he murdered her partner and significant other when he had the unfortunate lock to be home instead of her. Mobius sent her postcards on occasion to push her buttons and keep himself interested and in control. Her career stalled out after her partner's death and she gets a shot at redemption when Mobius resurfaces in the City of Angels. She is called in to help with the investigation, much to the chagrin of the LA agents. They feel that she is still affected by the death and that she will be of no help in the investigation. Things surface to make things more intriguing when it seems like Mobius has gotten a hold of some very deadly nerve agent and everyone is afraid that he will use it to devastating effect in Los Angeles. There are many plot twists and all is resolved neatly and satisfyingly. Michael Prescott is also author of the Brian Harper novels like the "Prey" series and the "Sh" series (Shudder, Shatter and Shiver). All of his books are superb and memorable. More people should discover his books. They are very enjoyable and he deserves a much larger audience. Michael Prescott is a pseudonym for Douglas Borton. He may have written more books under other names besides Prescott and Harper. If he has, I would like to know about them. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Book Description

Enthusiastic fans of Jonnie Jacobs's thrillers know what they're getting in bestseller after bestseller: riveting suspense, knockout writing, and a smart, world-weary heroine who can kick butt and take names when she needs to. Now Jacobs delivers another gripping tale of sex, lies, secrets, and murder whose razor-sharp twists and turns don't let up until the very last page is turned. A body count that's rising. A lone witness on the run. A killer who'll do anything to buy silence. It's the most dangerous case of attorney Kali O'Brien's career--and it's hitting way too close to home.

The last time Kali spoke to her brother, John, he was desperate to tell her something but too drunk to get it out. Now he's dead, an apparent suicide by overdose. That would be shocking enough, but the cops have more bad news: John was also the lead suspect in the recent double homicide of two women in Tucson. The victims include the wealthy heiress of the corporation John worked for and Olivia Perez, a pretty college coed whose family is determined to make someone pay for the crime, and Kali's at the top of their list--if she can't clear his name first. It's a tricky case that's about to get even trickier.

Kali didn't know her brother very well, and in death, the only clue he's left behind is as damning as it is mysterious. Hidden in the pages of his dictionary is a photo of three attractive young women. One is Olivia Perez. One is a street-tough runaway named Crystal. The third woman--a strip club dancer and porn actress--has just been found in a ditch, the victim of a brutal slaying. As shocking as the woman's death is her connection to Kali's brother. How did they know each other? What was John trying to tell Kali the night he died? And would someone kill to keep him from saying it? Suddenly her brother's suicide is starting to look a lot like murder.

Kali's only hope for solving the case lies in finding the last girl in the picture--a witness who knows far more than she should, maybe too much to live--and Kali has to get to her before the killer does. It's a search that will plunge her into the secrets and lies of her own family and deep into the sex industry's hidden underworld of going-nowhere-fast girls looking for easy money, where fantasies can be had for a price, blackmail is deadly, and silence can be bought with blood. And if Kali isn't careful, she could lead a cunning killer straight to the last target while putting herself in line to be the next victim...

love Jonnie Jacobs books. This is another very good read.If you love a good mystery, you will love this book.Only wish she wrote faster !!!!lol

4 out of 5 stars A very good read.......2007-06-12

First Sentence: The call came a little after two in the morning and pulled Erling from a particularly pleasant dream.

San Francisco attorney Kali O'Brian is away on the camping trip but, when checking messages, finds a call from her brother in Arizona, with whom she has not had contact for some time. Returning to the city, she learns her bother allegedly committed suicide after murdering a woman and her au-pair. Kali travels to Arizona to settle John's estate and clear his name.

I've always liked Jacob's Kali O'Brien so it was nice to read a new entry. I enjoyed the balance of the investigation and look at the relationship between Kali and her siblings, as she learns things about them she hadn't known. There is an interesting conflict of the lead cop who knows he should recuse himself from the investigation because of an affair he'd had with the victim. It's nice to see Kali taken out of her S.F. environment. Jacobs gives us a good sense of being in Tucson. The dialogue is a bit stilted, but the story definitely kept me turning the pages.

5 out of 5 stars Extra depth and richness in new Kali book.......2007-03-05

I have always enjoyed Jonnie Jacobs' Kali Obrien books--lots of suspense and really good writing. Her latest book shows us much more about Kali's family when her brother becomes a suspect in a string of murders involving young women in Tucson. Kali and her sister have to put aside their differences to find the truth as the mystery deepens. As well, Kali has to face the problems caused by the distance she's put between herself and her family. The book is told very crisply from different points of view, including the homicide detective investigating the crimes, who's hampered because his secret ex-lover is among the murder victims, causing him constant fear that someone will turn up this fling and endanger his shaky marriage. The mystery was intricately woven and unraveled, but the insight into Kali and her family was just as engrossing. Thanks for keeping me up late again, Jonnie!

4 out of 5 stars What can I say? Well...........2007-02-11

this title started with a bang, ended with a few terrific twists and turns, but the slow-moving middle made me itchy. I'm almost at a loss for words to describe my disappointment as I am an avid fan of Jonnie Jacobs books.

Of course, I am still recommending this book to all Ms. Jacobs' fans and I really wouldn't have missed reading this title...it does continue Kali O'Brien's story in a very positive way and for that I am left a happy camper!!!

Still looking forward to the next titles from this author....

5 out of 5 stars great character driven mystery.......2007-02-04

In San Francisco former District Attorney Kali O'Brien is horrified when she is informed that her brother John committed suicide after killing his ex-girlfriend Sloane Winslow and her housekeeper Olivia Perez. Though they rarely talked, Kali mourns her brother's death and has problems believing John would kill two people.

In Tucson, Arizona Kali joins their other sibling Sabrina to bury their brother and to settle his estate. However, the two sisters are stunned to learn the estate is tied up in probate while a wrongful death civil suit has been wrought against John. Kali and Sabrina seem even more stunned to learn their late sibling has been linked to the murder of a stripper and the disappearance of a teen runaway. Kali needs the truth so she begins an investigation into the activities of her deceased sibling though she fears what dark capers he did.

In her seventh refreshing tale, readers learn more about Kali's family through her investigation into her dead brother. The anticipation comes from wondering if John will be exonerated or guilty by his sister. Kali and Sabrina face a daunting task with the accusations that shred their family. Jonnie Jacobs provides a great character driven drama that shows why the O'Brien mysteries are some of the best toady.

Book Description

Patricia MacDonald has won a worldwide audience of readers with her page-turning novels of domestic suspense that twist and turn with surprises. Now she presents a riveting thriller about a young woman who finds her life threatened when she returns to her picture-perfect suburban hometown where a brutal crime shattered her family when she was a teenager.

The affluent town of Hoffman, New Jersey reeled in disbelief when highly esteemed physician Duncan Avery stabbed his wife Marsha to death one spring evening. The two Avery sons turned their backs on their father but his daughter Nina never stopped believing in his innocence.

Now, fifteen years later, Nina, a struggling actress in New York City, returns to Hoffman when her father is paroled and insists on re-settling there. Not only does Dr. Avery want to repair his relationships with his sons and meet his grandchildren, he claims he wants to find out who killed his wife. But neither Nina's brother Patrick, a successful investment banker with a wife and twin sons, nor Jimmy, a recovering drug addict who has adopted a new family, can bear to acknowledge their father's return.

Then, as suddenly as before, another act of violence overturns the Averys' lives. No longer certain if she can trust her family, her neighbors, or her old friends, Nina finds she can rely only on herself and a surprising new ally in her life as she searches for the truth behind crimes past and present. If she digs deep-down into the secrets of her family's and her neighbors' lives she stands a chance of catching a killer before she becomes his next victim.

With psychologically perceptive characterizations, emotional realism, and a gripping story line, The Girl Next Door exposes the dark impulses and fierce passions that can rule seemingly ordinary people and showcases Patricia MacDonald at the height of her celebrated powers.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book!!.......2006-10-25

I have been a mystery/thriller junkie for some time now, really soaking up and enjoying the work of John Sanford, Mary Higgins Clark and others. I just "stumbled" upon the author's book, "The Girl Next door" one night while exiting a local bookstore, and I shamefully admit I have never read this author's work before, even though I may have given it a cursory glance. Given the fact that I enjoyed this book immensely, I have a lot of catching up to do in regards to reading her past novels.

I took a chance and bought the book, and it's definitley a page turner and one that is hard to put down. As mentioned, the story revolves around Nina Avery, a strong willed and somewhat independent aspiring New York actress who seeks justice for her father, Duncan Avery , who was wrongfully accused and imprisoned for the horrific murder of his wife. Nina must unravel a web of deceit, lies and brutality that will eventually lead her to the truth.

While I hated for the book to come to an end, the author skillfully gets to the point and keeps the reader interested throughout the entire book. I also like the fact that the book was not cluttered with filler and useless dialouge, but maintains a steady course to the final chapter and stunning conclusion.

I will definitely seek out the rest of Ms. Mac Donald's work and look forward to future novels by her. A must have in the collection of anyone who enjoys the mystery genre.

4 out of 5 stars Feels like Mary Higgins Clark.......2005-11-29

which is a good thing in my opinion. The mystery is well plotted and the characters are likeable. However, the pace could have been better. I find the beginning to be a bit slow, and there are not much happening for the first half of the book, except introducing the characters, which makes is less suspenseful.

5 out of 5 stars Like............WOW!.......2004-10-15

I have read all of Patricia MacDonald's book, but this was the best. I read it in two days. You have to really admire Nina for having so much faith in her Dad with all the evidence against him. Especially since it is her Mom that he is convicted of killing. And, it had a touch of romance without all the sexual dancing that so many books have. I am not a prude, I just rather have a good book with a good story and this one delivered just that.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2004-09-22

I thought this book was great. It just keeps you going. And the ending is something you would never expect. Very hard to put it down.

2 out of 5 stars Good read if you need a book in a pinch.......2004-09-05

I ordered The Girl Next Door based on the description. While the book was a moderately good read, (I had no expectations of the book so to say i was dissapointed is not right because I was not.) it just didn't satisfy my reading need. Of course, all readers need to experience books for themselves and if they like thrillers (though this lacks a bit of thriller), you may wanna try this one. The story unfolds as most, with small speed bumps, and i can say i did not guess the bad guy. She did a good job with that one. I gave it two based on my reading standards.

I don't see anything wrong with this book. He sticks to the basics and that is all you need. Ok for the new investor or someone new to accounting.

1 out of 5 stars Not What You Expect.......2003-11-27

Only one of the 12 chapters is devoted to techniques for analyzing financial statements for possible fraud and that chapter is rather incomplete and superficial, simply discussing a few commonly used ratios that are probably already familiar to most readers interested in books of this type. The discussion of financial statement footnotes is particulary brief and lacking in description of what to look for. The other 11 chapters just give background material on corporate fraud and governance, conficts of interest at brokerage houses, etc. The author clearly is not an expert at reading financial statements and at one point even suggests incorporating technical analysis (stock price chart reading)into investment decisions. Pathetic. Readers should ignore this book and get Financial Fine Print by Michelle Leder instead.

Can their newfound love survive or is their insatiable desire doomed?

              I Hunger for You

Mia Luchese, who comes from a long line of vampire hunters, doesn't know that Colin Foxe broke off their blistering affair because he's a vampire. After she's attacked by evil vamps and Colin rescues her, their real identities must be revealed for them to get to the bottom of the attack. 3 out of 5 stars Anaemic vampire anthology.......2006-11-13

This collection is the first three vampire romances from Susan Sizemore which have been bundled together in one volume, "Crave The Night", although they are also available separately.

"I Burn For You" is the story of Domini Lancer, a woman who works for her grandfather's company which is a security/bodyguarding service. Domini's parents are both dead and she and her grandfather have a close and sparky relationship.

The story begins with Domini having a strange dream or premonition. We learn that she sometimes gets these and they tend to be true - she has some psychic powers which she tries to ignore. Domini's compulsion is to walk to the local market to buy some peaches - when she arrives there she sees a strange man and sees a voice in her head. She's a little spooked and rushes back off to work.

Alexander Reynard is the man she saw across the marketplace - except that he's not a man, he's a vampire. Vampires are able to live in daylight and avoid their problems with garlic and silver if they take the right series of drugs. Alec is discovering that his drugs aren't working entirely properly for him, but he suddenly bumps into Domini and realises instantly that she's his bondmate - the woman he is destined to partner. It's a bad time with him because of his health problems - the imbalance in the drugs can cause him to become a feral vampire and out of control.

Alec is a former Delta Forces operative and is hired by Domini's grandfather for bodyguard detail. Of course as soon as he walks into the building and meets Domini his problems escalate. Domini's friend Holly, a singing star, has had death threats and both Domini and Alec are detailed to protect her. It takes a little while before they realise that the death threats are actually a little closer to home, and that there are secrets in Domini's family history which can be dangerous.

The beginning of this book was pretty good - I found the explanation of the bodyguarding detail interesting. However it pretty soon degenerated into a love-fest with descriptions of Alec as Mr Dishy and übermale and various psychic/telepathic thoughts of sex between them. Domini seems pretty dense not to realise he's a vampire and he seems pretty dense not to explain things to her earlier - although this would have been disadvantageous to the plot. There's a thin line trod between masculine eagerness and violence towards Domini and I'm not sure the line was in the right place - somehow I didn't find him a very engaging hero; it was all about his looks and body and his actual personality seemed a bit one-dimensional. Equally I couldn't see what was so great about Domini - she seemed to spend a lot of her time getting angry with him, apart from the time she was in bed with him.

The book moves towards a crescendo ending which was actually rather a damp squib. There is some interesting world-building in that there are different kinds of vampires and Alec's actually the member of a group who serve mortals and try to keep them safe, but it wasn't enough to redeem a rather thin plot. Overall I found the book disappointing.

I Thirst For You is the second of Susan Sizemore's vampire romance novels set in the modern day. In this world, vampires live alongside mortals, pay taxes, have normal jobs, but their vampire nature is hidden from humans. This is an interesting new take on vampires and mortals and I like the way it's panning out so far.

Josephine Elliott is a former pilot who was flying a plane which crashed, causing some fatalities. Since the accident which left her with some scars she has been unable to fly and spends a lot of time camping on her own out in the desert - this is partly because she's developed some psychic abilities since the accident which mean she can read minds. Not very restful.

At the beginning of this story she's camping out again when she is kidnapped by a large, scary man. This man, Marcus Cage, keeps her prisoner in the car and then in a hotel room. She initially fears rape but eventually discovers that the situation that she's in is not that of a traditional kidnappee. Marc Cage is a strange person and she tries to understand what's going on, especially when she discovers she can communicate with him telepathically. Like all good vampires in fiction, he doesn't explain to her what's going on so she's always rather in the dark about things.

Marc has escaped from a group of people who are carrying out experiments on him and he knows it's vital that he gets clean away. However, discovering his bondmate, Jo, has rather put a spanner in the works.

Like the previous book by this author, "I Burn For You", the major thread of this book is the bondmate relationship between the two principal characters and their sex life together. There's a lot of sex in this - too much really, it got repetitive - and not really too much character development or understanding. Again the motif of dreams that are partly telling the future is used and there are vast tracts of conversations held all in the mind between the two of them, signified by writing in italics; I often found it difficult to keep track of who was saying what.

I found this book overall a disappointment, as with the previous one. There are some fairly exciting scenes when they escape imprisonment and another time when they are running from a forest fire but mostly it's a bit sedentary and repetitive. There are a couple of interesting side characters, one introduced at the end is the hero of the next book, but there's nothing really deep and engaging about our main characters. They meet, they fall in lust, they have lots of sex and it's all a bit boring really. There's plenty of potential in the world she's built with the Clans, Families and Tribes - I just wish the author had made better use of it.

I Hunger For You is the third of Susan Sizemore's vampire stories and it mentions some of the characters from her previous books, I Burn For You and I Thirst For You. It also introduces a couple of new characters and I have a strong suspicion there might be books about them in the offing.

There are good things about this series - the worldbuilding is interesting: vampires live alongside mortals and have jobs (the hero of this book, Colin Foxe, is a SWAT police officer), they can go about in daylight if they take particular drugs and they sometimes have relationships with mortals.

The heroine of this book is Caramia Luchese, a fit young woman who finds herself involved in a hostage situation to which Colin Foxe is called. After they meet they have a three month affair which Foxe eventually breaks off - he is a vampire and doesn't want anything long term with a mortal.

However neither of them are able to forget about the other and Colin finds himself virtually stalking Mia and comes to her rescue when other vampires of the Tribe (who treat mortals as lunch) try to attack her. It's not entirely clear initially why the Tribe are so interested in Mia and she and Colin don't ever seem to get much opportunity to actually discuss anything as they are always jumping into bed.

Like in the previous two books, the main thing that seems to bind heroine and hero together is sex. In this book, however, Colin doesn't want to even consider Mia as a long-term partner as he is dismissive of mortals. Over the course of the book he learns that some things are more powerful than his preconceived ideas. Mia is from a family of vampire hunters whose mission is to rid the world of all vampires, even those from the Clan (who work to protect mortals), such as Colin. There is the tension between the two of them, an antagonism, that is there when they aren't having sex; fortunately for them they seem to spend most of their time having sex so get along quite well.

This book revisits the case of the Patron who escaped Colin at the end of the last book (I Thirst For You). Colin is focused on finding the Patron and stopping him but he finds Mia is both a spanner in the works and an aid to his mission. But can either of them trust each other?

I found parts of this book rather slow and, like the other two novels, the characterisation seemed rather one-dimensional. The author evidently likes her Alpha Males (or "Primes") in these books and the vampires tend to seem rather caveman-like over their women. This book did improve and get more exciting towards the end but the plot always felt rather like something to hang the sex part of the book around, rather than the major point of the novel.

It's an OK read but, like the other two books, nothing very special. There are many significantly better vampire books out there which have a plot and some characters alongside the worldbuilding that is important in these stories.
