Book Description

When school psychologist Skye Denison investigates the death of a popular teenager who was cast as Sleeping Beauty in the school play, she uncovers some shocking revelations about prominent Scumble River citizens. And even ever-optimistic Skye knows that in this case, finding the killer won't end this tale happily-ever-after.

"Swanson knows small-town America, its secrets and its self-delusions, and she writes as if she might have been hiding behind a tree when some of the bodies were being buried." (Margaret Maron)

"School psychologist Skye Denison is the quintessential amateur sleuth: bright, curious and more than a little nervy." (Earlene Fowler)

3 out of 5 stars An interesting series..........2005-08-26

I'm still having trouble with Skye Denison, the main character of this small-town series. While I enjoy the author's use of locale and her knowledge of psychology, I find the character of Skye very unlikable. She has a need to help people; she wants to be seen as independent; she feels compelled to get to the bottom of things. Yes, I think it's all about Skye's feelings, not the people she hurts, alienates, and leaves fumbling in her wake. She lies. A lot. Cute, pert, trying to be funny little white lies. She lies to justify her meddlesome nature. I may never like Skye, but the mysteries are engaging enough to keep me reading. I just wish the main character had a little more integrity to go along with her mystery-solving acumen.

5 out of 5 stars Best in the series.......2004-12-27

Denise Swanson hits her stride in this, the third book of the Scumble River Mystery Series. Skye Denison is in the middle of an unfruitful counseling session with an uncooperative student when she is asked to check out a situation in the school gym. She arrives only to find that a young girl who is playing the lead in the school production of "Sleeping Beauty" is dead. Skye cannot resist the temptation to carry on her own investigation despite the objections of the local police chief who has been her off-again-on-again boyfriend. In the course of her investigation, Skye uncovers a lot of secrets in her small town, including infidelity and cheating in order to win beauty pageants. This book has interesting characters and a plot that moves along at just the right pace. Cozy fans will enjoy this series, particularly this book.

4 out of 5 stars Some Issues.......2003-07-16

This was a good book, but again, my favorite book so far is the first one (Murder of a Small-Town Honey), and I haven't read the fourth one yet, so there's hope yet.

During my reading of this book, I felt that Skye didn't really understand teenagers, or was for some reason bias towards those in the book. (Yes, yes, I'm a teen myself!) Anyhow, the storyline, again, didn't intrest me that much. Justin and that girl who's name I can't remember, were more likable in this book than Skye herself. Also, one more thing, through out the book, Skye was asking for too many things! I know it's her job to help the children, but I was annoyed how she would always try to find the principal to request he do something.

Overall, it was good, but I was annoyed by it. The one thing I'm gald about in this book, is that the author didn't kill off the murderer at the end! (It was a nice change!)

4 out of 5 stars Even Prince Charming Couldn't Save This Beauty!.......2003-07-12

In the 3rd book in the Scumble River mystery series, we see amateur sleuth, Skye Denison still working hard at fitting into her hometown and happily counseling students at her job. Skye is a school psychologist, returning home to live and work after humiliating herself while delivering a valedictorian speech 12 years prior. It seems that Skye left with a chip on her shoulder about "the small minds of those in a small town" and has to return home with her tail tucked firmly between her legs after losing her last job. Since she left her last job in disgrace (although not her fault), the only job she can get is in the school system that she shunned when she left town. While trying to re-establish herself in her hometown, she helped to solve two previous cases that have cleared family members of murder.

In this case, Skye finds the body of Sleeping Beauty on stage at the high school, but this time no Prince Charming will come to her rescue. It seems that this former pageant competitor has been murdered, and there is a long list of suspects in her death. Skye has difficulties investigating this case as her police contact is mad at her, and she is stymied by the high school kids and their parents. Why did this seemingly popular girl have so many enemies? Who really killed this beauty? With the help of her mother and possible love interest, Simon Reid, Sky sets out to find the truth about this girl and her not-so-fairy tale life.

I enjoyed this book although I found myself skipping a few paragraphs here and there while reading it. The mystery was appealing although I found that I had solved it earlier than I normally do. The characters are very interesting, and the aspect that I like the most in this series is the relationships between all of the people in this small town. If you enjoy cozy mysteries set in small town America, give this series a try.

The first book in the series is "Murder of a Small Town Honey". Enjoy!

      Book Description

Author Miles Van Meter is on a book tour to promote his sensational bestseller Sleeping Beauty, a true-crime account of a deeply personal subject: the attack by a serial killer that left his twin sister, Casey, in a coma. Tonight the audience waits to hear Miles discuss recent developments in his sister's case -- unaware that pieces of this complex puzzle of violence, unknown even to the author, are about to be revealed.

Six years earlier, life was much simpler for everyone involved, especially seventeen-year-old Ashley Spencer, a popular high school soccer star. Then one night an intruder entered Ashley's home and murdered her father and her best friend. Traumatized and suffering from a crippling sense of survivor guilt, Ashley is ready to give up on both soccer and life until help comes from an unexpected source -- a scholarship to an elite private school is extended to her by school dean Casey Van Meter. The school quickly becomes a haven for both Ashley and her mother, Terri. As Ashley regains her sense of self through the school's soccer program, Terri joins a writing group for adults led by Joshua Maxfield, a former literary wunderkind who has disappeared from the bestseller lists since his second book was panned by both critics and fans.

Then tragedy strikes again and Ashley has to run for her life, unaware that the key to her survival is in the one book she's afraid to read -- Sleeping Beauty.

With the help of her dying father, Ashley Spencer manages to escape from the man who invaded her home and killed Norman Spencer and her best friend, Tanya Jones. The police believe that it is the work of a serial killer, whose modus operandi is to enter the homes of families with teenaged daughters, where they are tortured and slaughtered before he ventures on into the kitchen for a midnight snack. But when the killer shows up at Ashley's new school, a private academy miles away from her hometown, Ashley knows that what happened in her home was not random. The murderer is determined to destroy Ashley and the worst part of it is that she doesn't know who she has to run from and why she needs to hide. The story jumps to five years later, when Ashley is forced to come out of hiding to return to Oregon with a truth that will shock those involved - and place her in a vulnerable position where the killer is likely to strike. Philip Margolin conjures a tour de force of character and plot guaranteed to make you squirm in your seat ( or in your bed) as you race through the pages. Readers may have their suspicions as they are introduced to a myriad of characters; the rich and powerful Van Meters, the has-been writer Joshua Maxfield who is in need of a new best seller, the unruly Randy Coleman who feeds on his wife, Casey Van Meter's wealth, and the attentive as well as attractive lawyer, Jerry Phillips, who captures the heroine's heart. But Margolin cleverly depicts these fictitious players, making them out to be believable and misleading, and readers will have to bite their nails to refrain themselves from yanking on the last page. This offering is guaranteed to bring you to an ending that is unexpected, leaving you with the fear that evil can lurk behind a compassionate and kindly demeanour.

5 out of 5 stars Yummy and Riveting.......2006-08-05

I picked this book up at an airport bookstore hoping to find something interesting to read as I waited for my flight. I almost missed my plane! This book is so engrossing from cover to cover that I could not put it down. Margolin artfully crafts his characters and verbally stuns your senses with horrific crimes. This book will assault you the entire way through. A must read for fans and newcomers alike.

4 out of 5 stars Sleeping Beauty .......2006-05-18

Miles Van Meter is an author who writes a book, sleeping beauty, about the murders that happened a few years back. The book goes through the book tour of sleeping beauty and flashes back to when the murders and trials were actually taking place. It all starts when Ashley Spencer, a student, comes home from a soccer game and later on that night someone breaks into her house and murders her father and best friend. The book, that Miles wrote, describes the many traumatizing experiences that Ashley goes through after the murders; from going to a new school, having many life threating experiences, and tracking down the murder of her parents. Sleeping Beauty was sometimes slow but I would definately recommend to continue on with it because there is an unexpected twist that you will never see coming. There are also many ties that make you not want to put the book down.

3 out of 5 stars Silly and inconsequential .......2006-03-12

What's nice about this book, also takes it into the realm of insanely improbable day time soap operas. If you have not yet read Harlan Coben, I would suggest that you check out this authors more recent stand alone novels (not part of the Myron Bolitar series). Coben manages to accomplish with a taste of panache what Margolin completes in a laughable manner here.

Why I say what I wrote above, is that this story has so many plot twists that are so far fetched that when you start placing one on top of another, you get to the point where you just have to sit back and take stock of the situation. I find that I can't really go into detail here with out giving away the plot. So I know that what I am writing here is more than a little confusing. But if you have read, or are about to read this book, the only way to enjoy it is to not keep a running count of the odds against any of this happening. One thing in particular that bugged me is that the murderer kills what might be dozens of victims here. Only the author is pretty much entirely concerned with the protagonist, Ashley Spencer, and her immediate family. So time and again as the story unfolds it is a little bewildering that everyone is focusing on Ashley, from the killer to other characters, to the trail itself, the other victims are forgotten quite often.

If I were to judge this book merely on its merits as a work of fiction I would pan it outright. If you take it as a light hearted throwaway genre book, it deserves a little credit because it is entertaining. Maybe this is sort of like if you went to see the next `B' action film that hit your local theaters. Totally forgettable, a tired formula, but entertaining for an hour and a half.

i really thought this was a great book . i have read the other reviews and agree with some things said , so i will not repeat it. but i did not think that it made the book any less interesting . i did kind of have a feeling about how the book would end , but i wasnt sure . i finished it in about three days so it did keep me involved in the mystery . i will read more from this author in the future.

        4 out of 5 stars A Review, I will write..........2005-08-28

This book focuses alot on Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan reuniting their kinship as Padawan and Master.

The Jedi Temple is under seige and only Qui-gon and Tahl can take measures to stop the traitor stealing artifacts from the temple.

I thought this book was a nice tie-in to the 2nd book in the series, mixing in the current story of Obi-Wan rejoining the Jedi Order, and continuing on into the 8th book which I am now reading.

These young adult books are quite fascinating. The stories are short and sweet, but they are not without action and suspense. They pack more than enough interest to keep me reading.

5 out of 5 stars Jude Watson does it again!.......2003-08-29

Its definetly the best in the series, and I would have preferred it to end here. The ending seemed as though it was FORCED to hint about the sequal. I have a feeling that Jude Watson didnt want to continue writing it, and then had to. Its a great book, to bad about the ending....

4 out of 5 stars Return to the Fantastic.......2002-10-12

I keep thinking to myself that Jude Watson is no J.K. Rowling, but now I'm beginning to think that I'm deluding myself. The Captive Temple is, as we've come to expect from Watson, a fantastic read. Most remarkable of all is the way Watson is able to depict Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, twelve years before The Phantom Menace. What is masterful is that these both are and are not the characters we saw in the movie; they appear exactly as they must have been in their younger days. Remarkable.

The Captive Temple is also an improvement over the previous book. Obi-Wan is less mopey ("Mopey-Wan" . . . hmmm), and Qui-Gon less brooding. There are no quick fixes to their relationship, broken by Obi-Wan's betrayal of Qui-Gon in book 5, which is satisfyingly frustrating. Watson seems to have masterly paced the evolution of our Jedi heroes' relationship, giving us just enough development to keep us coming back for more.

5 out of 5 stars On of the best books, "The Captive Temple"!.......2002-04-08

Obi-Wan Kenobi has decided to return to the Temple after staying on Melida/Daan. But once he arrives at the Jedi Temple with his former Master Qui-Gon, he realizes that things might not go as well as he thought. The Jedi Council is harsh with him and Qui-Gon seems to ignore him. Can he ever regain the trust he had with the Council and Qui-Gon? Also, there's a threat within the Temple. Everyone is being under suspicion, everyone is in danger, and everyone is wary of others. Who could be behind these attacks? As Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan try to solve the mystery, they discover that the attacker might be someone they know, someone they've already encountered...

In this story Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's relationships is being slowly healed though I must stress on the 'slow' part. I can't wait till their problems are resolved and they become the perfect team they become to be in Episode 1. Jude Watson has certainly done an astounding job, the plot and story of the book is so unique and interesting and I couldn't put it down!

This series explains a lot about how Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan first meet. Their beginning is far from simple and all smooth-sailings, which would be pretty monotonous if it was. Though the books are said for ages 9-12, like many other reviewers I agree that the Jedi Apprentice Series are for anybody. Extremely well-written, the emotions, thoughts, and feelings of the main characters are very well put down into words. I also like the different array of humans and aliens which are portrayed, both good and bad; Obi-Wan's friend Bant with her wise ways, Tahl with her many disadvantages of being blind and many more advantages with having the Force, and TooJay, Tahl's annoying navigational droid.

The first Jedi Apprentice book is written by Dave Wolverton while all the rest (19 more books) are written by Jude Watson and are all very highly recommended from me. The books don't really 'end' at all, the books ends in either a cliffhanger or with a little glimpse into the future. Believe me, once you start reading them, you'll want to read the next one... then the next one... I can't wait for Jude Watson's next Star Wars series, The Jedi Quest Series with Obi-Wan Kenobi as the Jedi Master and Anakin Skywalker as the Padawan Apprentice.

Another Star Wars Series I recommend and like a lot are the Young Jedi Knights series. The stories are about Jacen and Jaina Solo (twins of Han and Leia Solo), and their friends as they journey on the road to becoming Jedi Knights. More on the teenager level of reading. For adult readings, a few selections I enjoy reading are "The Thrawn Trilogy", "Rogue Planet", "The Jedi Academy Trilogy", "The Corellian Trilogy", and "The Truce at Bakura".

5 out of 5 stars One of the best yet!.......2001-08-24

"The Captive Temple", written masterfully by Jude Watson, continues telling the story of young Obi-Wan Kenobi leaving the Jedi. He has left the guidance of his former master, Qui-Gon Jinn, and of the Jedi Council. But when the Jedi Temple and Master Yoda's life are both threatened, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan must work together to save the Jedi Temple from certain doom. Tahl, Bant, and several old friends -- welcomed and not -- return in this page-turning novel. Conflict after conflict arises: who is trying to destroy the Temple? Who would want to kill the inocent Yoda? But the most baffaling question is: will the Jedi Council allow Obi-Wan to come back, and if they do, will Qui-Gon accept him again? All of these questions will be answered in books number 7 and 8.

In this fast-paced second book of Nora Roberts's Stars of Mithras series, bounty hunter Jack Dakota figures he's in for an easy assignment when he accepts a job tracking beautiful bail-jumper M.J. O'Leary. His plan is simple: find her, push his way into her apartment, explain the situation, and bring her in.

When M.J., a fifth-degree black belt, misinterprets his intentions and attacks him, Jack is forced to reevaluate his assumptions. Jack and M.J. discover they've both been set up. M.J. is no bail-jumper, and whoever put Jack on her trail knows it.

Before they can figure out what's happening, a goon with a gun--and every intention of shooting M.J.--interrupts their discussion. They join forces to fight him off and escape, but much to the tough-minded M.J.'s annoyance, Jack takes charge of the situation and she finds herself handcuffed to the door handle of his beat-up, souped-up Oldsmobile.

Jack has no intention of letting M.J. go until he gets to the bottom of things. The men on her trail are professionals, and if she's not directly involved in something illegal, she is involved in something that's likely to get her killed. The cynical bounty hunter is no knight in shining armor, but he finds himself in the uncomfortable position of protecting her; whatever is happening, M.J. isn't talking about it.

Searching her belongings, Jack discovers a magnificent blue diamond. M.J. is forced to explain that a friend in trouble sent her the stone for safekeeping. The diamond is one of a priceless trio known as the Stars of Mithras, which her friend was appraising for the Smithsonian. But someone else knows M.J. has it--someone who will stop at nothing to obtain it.

Soon Jack and M.J. are on the run, forced to work together to stay alive in an ever-tightening web of danger and conspiracy complicated by an attraction neither can deny.

The second installment of Mithras Series begins with Jack Dakota trying to catch bail-jumper M.J. O'Leary. Jack thinks this'll be an easy job instead M.J., think he's someone else, attacks him. I like how she was able to take care of herself. They realize they've been set up and team up to find out who. It was a very exciting read.

this book was pretty great. I used to read a lot of books back in junior high and although I remember having more fun reading them I have to say this book had the best last chapter of any book Ive ever read. especially the very end. ok maybe some people will think im being sarcastic but come on how could you ask for a more perfect ending. If you wanted to go from a crazy fake adventure to a real life love story that lasts till your about a hundred years old theres no better ending I could think of.

as far as the rest of the book is concerened its decent enough to read. theres some novel [...] in those pages but the reason the book was written was to show someones idea of how two strangers can fall in love. Im not a very good judge of guys but I have a feeling if jack was a real guy hed be very ugly. the other character mj was supposed to be really smart but she had some trouble making wise decisions in a jam.

4 out of 5 stars Continuing the Pace!.......2005-05-07

The Stars of Mithra series deals with three best friends: Bailey James, MJ O'Leary and Grace Fontaine. All three are childhood friends and would trust each other with their lives, and this is just about what happens in this succession of books!

CAPTIVE STAR is the second book in the Stars of Mithra series and it keeps the quick pace that Nora Roberts set in the first book, HIDDEN STAR. CAPTIVE STAR features MJ O'Leary who is a gorgeous spitfire compacted into a tiny package. Jack Dakota is a bounty hunter hired to pick up MJ, who jumped bail, or so he's been told when a sleazy character hired him. This is easier said then done, and when Jack and MJ are attacked in her apartment by a man with murder on his agenda, Jack decides to find out who lied to him and why. If he can also figure out why MJ has a diamond the size of a tennis ball, it would be an added bonus.

Of course sparks are gonna fly between these two dynamic personalities which adds a lot of flavor to this story!

As CAPTIVE STAR ends, you're left craving more - wanting to find out the rest of the story. Luckily, Roberts picks up the tale in the next book, SECRET STAR.

A fantastic trilogy that I highly recommend! These are "feel good" books with lots of romance and a little bit of mystery thrown in for balance!

5 out of 5 stars Another winner for Nora Roberts.......2003-10-09

This is the second in a series of three by Nora Roberts. So far the Stars of Mithra series has not been a dissapointment in the least.

        M. J. O'Leary is a witty spitfire who is happy running her own business until her life is turned upside down by a bounty hunter named Jack Dakota. Jack has been sent to catch M.J. who is supposedly a bail jumper. He soon discovers this isn't the case, but that discovery only brings to light more questions instead of answering them.

M.J. and Jack only have each other to rely on as they try and deciper the mystery, but in order to do it they have to learn to trust each other. This leads to a whirlwind romance and a very suspenseful story. One I am sure you will enjoy, as I did.

        5 out of 5 stars A good story.......2002-10-29

I liked this one, though not as much as the first in the series. MJ and Jack were definitely a great match. There is a lot of action in this one, and a ton of sparks between MJ and Jack. They rarely stop their bantering, and when they do, then they have fireworks of a different kind. The plot on this one is a little far fetched, but none of the plots in this trilogy are very realistic. This is escape reading at its best!

I bought this book wondering just how good could a book on Leia's point of view in A New Hope be? I mean after all we saw the movie. But I was really surprised. This was an excellent book. We learned new things like how Leia got the plans for the Death Star in the first place and what happened while Leia was on board the Death Star waiting for Luke to come rescue her (well not waiting...you know what I mean). Her thoughts on her first meetings with Luke and Han. Her and Han's bickering was hilarous. A must read for every Star Wars fan.

This is a review of the Scholastic book Star wars Journal - Captive of Evil -by Princess Leia Organa - written by Jude Watson and published July, 1998. Scholastic specializes in books for 9 to 12 year olds, and jude Watson is an experienced author in writing at this level. Watson is also the author of the Prequel books aimed at the same age group called Jedi Quest which is the adventures of obi-Wan and his young Padawan Anakin.

In the novelization of Star Wars the adventures of Luke Skywalker (sometimes called New Hope) they expanded a little on the torture that Leia received while she was captive on the Death Star. This short book is the Journal that Leia kept while being held in the tender graces of Tarkin and Vader. It is the journal she kept throughout NH giving us her take on the greatest movie ever made.

Scholastic has also produced journal for Luke and Han if you like this one.

5 out of 5 stars This one is awesome!.......2001-12-30

Remember the very first movie shown in theaters of the Star Wars Saga? Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Chewbacca, and the droids team up for the first time against Darth Vader and the dreaded Death Star.

Now relive it all from the viewpoint of Princess Leia Organa. She wrote it all in her journal in hopes that should she die, the journal and all its secrets would find its way to the Rebellion!

***** The book reads much like a diary with a recorder built in. It begins before the movie did and ends shortly past where the movie ended. Leia tells how she came into possession of the Death Star plans and what she endured as Vader's prisoner. We can see how the Force influenced her strongly in her decisions. Though she had no idea what or where these strange and strong feelings were from, Leia trusted it. We see a glimpse of the proof showing that the Force runs strong in the Skywalker family, and we understand more about Leia, Luke, and Han. All-in-all, this book is a masterpiece! *****

          4 out of 5 stars A well deserved 4 star book.......2001-03-16

While I didn't think this journal was as good as Luke's, it was definitely one of the better ones. This gives an excellent depiction of A New Hope through Leia's eyes, giving an intirely new perspective to the story. An especially good point is that not only does it let us at last know what Leia was thinking at this time, but it also gives us a bigger view of the intire story (ever wonder how Leia got the Death Star plans in the first place?) and letting us get to know the true character inside. It was interesting to at last know what she was thinking, and the constant bickering she had with Han was hilarious. I usually don't pay much attention to their relationship, since Luke is my favorite and I was always more interested in his relationships, yet this book shed new light on both of their characters and actually got me interested in them. Also her early conection with Luke was compelling, much as it both intrigued and disturbed her. Speaking of Luke, it's very interesing to see how he is portrayed in the different journals. For instance, in his own journal he was portrayed as being an awesome hero, the star of everything. In Han's he was seen as a well meaning dweeb, and here he is just plain cute. Coincidence? Anyway, I highly recommend this book to Star Wars fans of all ages, though 9-12 would probably enjoy it best.

5 out of 5 stars Her royal pain in the highness.......2000-08-03

The Han-Leia interaction in this book was hilarious. When he interupted and entered "her royal pain in the highness" in the data pad. (In the true spirit of Han and Leia's first meeting) I was rolling on the floor laughing. Thoose two are funny together, even in the face of being nearly killed. Nice to see there are new insults to read about. I'm a big Leia fan and a Han Leia nut, so I loved thoose parts. When she said han solo was correctly named, because no one could be a bigger fan of Han Solo than himself, I was dying. Nice also, is her mixed "he seems famliar" almost motherly inclination towards Luke.

Perhaps the best part of the Journal is the insight into her time on the Death Star. We knew she wasn't just sitting around painting her nails, but to read what happened is a totally different thing (Especially since we now have an image of her life on Alderaan). She attacked her father (Vader). Okay, she didn't know he was her father, but....

          It's a wonderfully fun read.

Actually, the only journal I haven't read is Anakin's and they've all been good.

              4 out of 5 stars Good book . . . if memory serves.......2001-12-18

I really enjoyed this book when I was younger. It's been years since it was lost, but it left such an impression on my memory that I'm back to look for it. It introduces Lam Lao, a cynical smuggler who gets mixed up with a fight that is not his own. (Sound like anyone else you know?)

Actually, the thing I remember liking about this book is that it's a little more realistic than a lot of other 'Christian' fiction. It doesn't resort to /deus ex machina/ to solve every problem. (Granted, it has a measure of that.) It actually lets the good guys suffer--and wrestle with that suffering. (Robin Hardy's _Annals of Lystra_ series is similar in that respect.) Of course, I was only a kid (albeit a precocious one) when I read it, so I'm sure I'll find it a little more predictable as an adult. Even so, I plan to buy a copy and read it again.

5 out of 5 stars Great Christian Book.......2000-04-15

Captive Planet is a great book. Gregory Smith did a great job writing a Christian book. He managed to combine Christianity and Science Fiction to make a great book. Usually, you don't think that it is possible to do that. It is also a great story about salvation and acceptance know mattar what you did in the past. It is a great science fiction book also. You want to know what happens and if Lam Lao and his friends survive and how.

5 out of 5 stars Seductive Tale with Two Incredible Characters. This book is Hot! (A Grade).......2007-07-17

Loretta Chase is an incredible writer and with Captives of the Night, she writes a near perfect book. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical romance with mystery, suspense and passion from a hero for a woman who becomes his soul, or so he believes- this book is for you.
Captives is the sequel to The Lion's Daughter where Comte d' Esmond (Ismal is his real name) was the villain of that story and now he is the hero and after ten years he is back with a vengeance but on the right side of the law. He is undercover trying to stop a man who was even more devious than he was. Francis Beaumont is the true villain of the piece but soon is murdered. He leaves behind a widow- Leila who is an artist and becomes the new obsession of Esmond.
Leila is an interesting woman and one that has been though so much heartache. Her husband treated her horribly, even though he saved her after the murder of her own father and allowed her talents to shown through. But Francis had demons and horrible secrets that Leila comes to find out with the help of Esmond who may have been responsible for her father's death over 10 years ago. They become partners and investigate nasty dead hubby's murder and soon their passions for each other collide.
Leila and Esmond were written in such a way that was mind boggling. Chase's creative skills are top notch here and when they these two characters finally come together to show their love for each other, well it is everything any romance fan would want between their hero and heroine.
This honestly is one of Chase's best works and her hero Esmond is so unique and overall seductive in his talk and actions that Leila had no chance. When she finally surrenders, she does so willingly and those scenes are beyond hot!
A definite winner and a keeper for anyone's bookshelf.

The Lion's Daughter (Berkley Sensation) (Berkley Sensation)

5 out of 5 stars A well-written and layered book but with flaws.......2007-01-04

First comment about this book - the cover art seemed a bit odd. We have a man with a very modern haircut peeping through some bed hangings; he's got a definite five o'clock shadow but completely hairless arms and he looks like one of my friends who's a vicar in Swindon. He certainly doesn't look like an Albanian man masquerading as a French Count in 1829 - who is described as having blonde hair which is slightly overlong and amazingly blue eyes. Once again, the cover art of a Regency Mass-market Paperback lets us down - badly.

But on to the book, if you've managed to get past the awkward cover and actually purchased the thing. It's the story of the Comte D'Esmond, French nobleman, who appears to be trying to seduce Mrs Leila Beaumont, wife of Francis Beaumont. All of these characters appeared briefly in "Lord of Scoundrels" - Francis Beaumont being a very unpleasant man who spends his time in dissolute living; his wife, on the other hand, is an amazing artist and the sole of fidelity.

Until Francis is murdered and she is the chief suspect. Fortunately she is acquitted of the murder, with the help of the Comte D'Esmond, but then it becomes clear to her that she must try to find out who actually did kill her husband, in case that person tries to murder someone else. So she goes to a figure in authority - who puts the Comte D'Esmond on the case. But is he quite who he seems?

The characters in this book are many layered. The Comte is decidedly not as he appears on the surface but he guards his secrets incredibly well. Leila Beaumont has been emotionally damaged by her husband and can't trust men at all - when she realises how many secrets the Comte is keeping she knows she can't trust him either. And yet they have to work together and she slowly begins to unpick his story and find out more about him, much against his will.

There's not a great deal of action in this book apart from small movements as the Comte and Leila move around her artists studio, picking up paintbrushes, sitting down on a chair, that kind of thing. No long carriage journeys or gunfights, it's like a still-life painting where the subjects provide all the visual interest by just being themselves. It's well written, particularly in the Comte's way of speaking English with a foreign flavour, but I did find my attention straying sometimes because of the lack of action and because there was always something more being unveiled - what you thought was true seemed to change on a very regular basis as Leila finds out more. The book definitely picked up in interest towards the end although I was very fearful about the Big Misunderstanding that was trailed from about a third of the way through - fortunately the author did something rather better with this than you would usually expect in this kind of novel. Overall her characters were different and interesting and I did enjoy the book, if sometimes getting a little confused by all the different characters and finding their focus on the murder plot a little irritating.

                5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully romantic.......2006-12-09

This is my favorite Loretta Chase book yet. And I love them all.

It is a sequel to "The Lion's Daughter", set ten years later. Those who remember "Ismal" from that book will be startled at first by this story of him and how he falls in love. You do not have to have read "Lion's Daughter" to read this, (I read this one first) but it helps.

Superbly written, this story is at once a romance and a mystery and is completely spell binding. I could not put it down, and I have worn out my one copy and need to buy another!

Loretta Chase continues to amaze me with her intense but marvelously drawn characters, her unique "voices" and "faces" for each of them from book to book, and her depth of knowledge of the worlds she visits.

This book was originally published by Avon is 1994. Her newest books are not as "deep" in characters and setting, and yet are enjoyable. But my favorite of all of her books so far is this one, and because it is deeply written.

Neither as wryly funny as "The Last Hellion" nor as seriously scary as "The Lion's Daughter", 'Captives of the Night" certainly captivated ME!

                1 out of 5 stars Sadly..............dissapointed........2006-09-19

Ms. Chase is a highly talented and interesting writer. However I found this book to be just plain awful.
First of all there is a lot more mystery than romance. And the plot just seems to drag on and on and on...

While I enjoy heriones that are strong willed. This one bordered on "lunatic". I just can't like a character who throws tantrum after tantrum and even hits the hero on the head with a chamber pot while screaming that she is going to kill him. And on the next page she is in his arms.... She was just way too dark for my taste.

The hero is okay. Nothing out of the ordinary and the secondary characters are just fair.

If you want to read an amazing book by Ms. Chase, then "Lord of Soundrels" is a wonderful choice. Pass on this one...wish I had.

3 out of 5 stars Loretta makes me work hard for this one........2006-05-15

I love reading Loretta Chase's work because it is so dense. You have to work through every paragraph and I don't usually know where she is going. This book was no different. However I gave this book less than a stellar rating because the heroine was far to jaded for me and I couldn't see her attraction. And the constant refusals of Ismal were disappointing. She was fighting some inner battle with herself and it was getting tedious to read it. The mystery didn't keep my attention either. OK read, just not going to read it again.
