Justifiable Means Review.......2006-03-26
Terri Blackstock is a master story weaver. Her characters are believable and she keeps you glued to the pages until the very last one.
Worthy of TEN Stars!.......2005-07-23
"Justifiable Means," the second book in Terri Blackstock's four-volume "Sun Coast Chronicles," is a superb page-turning thriller... perhaps her best novel I've read so far (although everything she writes is great). Given the opportunity, I would rate this book worthy of TEN stars! And, while this suspenseful work is as good as any of the top-ranked authors of this genre (and better than most), Ms. Blackstock's ability to skillfully weave into her stories her strong Christian faith, makes it all the more special. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! --Ron Howe (a.k.a. Toby Martin II) / Erskine, Minnesota.
Justifiable Means...awesome!.......2005-07-20
I am a big fan of Terri Blackstock and she didn't let me down with this. As a continuation of Evidence of Mercy, she draws you in with her mysteries, love and what God is showing the characters through their trials. It left me eagerly waiting for the next edition.
Fast Paced and Exciting.......2001-01-24
I could not put this book down. Very fast paced, suspenceful, and plenty of great Christian lessons that we can all learn. Liked the romance in the book and love having characters in this story from the previous book. It is fun to see the characters again, see how they are doing. I feel like I know the characters that Terri just brings to life.
A great read.......2000-05-30
How does one cope with grief after the tragic loss of a loved one? In Melissa's case, REVENGE. Blackstock does a great job of showing that Christians are human and have to deal with the problems of life like anyone else. The difference is how a Christian, like Detective Larry Millsaps, deals with those problems. Not only is the story great, but also having a great Christian law enforcement officer as the protagonist was wonderful--not a lot of writers could carry that off the way that Blackstock can. The only thing lacking in this story is that it has not yet been made a movie of the week!

4 in one.......2007-04-05
I had read the first book from this set at the library. I was looking to purchase them all and this book came through. All of the stories are great. They have a good plot, with a good amount of suspense. I like how Blackstock uses the 'stars' of all 4 books in the set to help each other within the series. If you enjoy other suspense {mystery} novels I highly recommend this read.
The Sun Coast Chronicles.......2007-01-03
Anything by Terri Blackstock is worth the time invested in reading. Love her books and actually bought this one as a gift for my granddaughter, who enjoyed it and is now reading another of Terri's books.
Move over Mary Higgins Clark!.......2003-01-21
A Christian version of suspense queen Mary Higgins Clark? Terri Blackstock's skill at writing suspense fiction reminded me much of the mystery queen. "Evidence of Mercy" (available as a separate novel, or as one of four best-selling Blackstock novels in the "Suncoast Chronicles" anthology) is a humdinger of a suspense story, revolving around the lives of three main characters. The main protagonist, Lynda, is a Christian lawyer whose life is threatened by an unknown killer. The second central character is the atheist Jake, who becomes a paraplegic after crashing on Lynda's sabotaged plane while test-flying it as a prospective buyer. The third main character is one of Lynda's clients, Paige, a single parent trying to avoid her abusive ex-husband. Suspense mounts as the mystery killer and his motive remain unidentified in the first half of the story.
The first story in this collection, "Evidence of Mercy", is a terrific and captivating story that draws you in, and at the same time gives you much to think about, because the characters not only battle a mysterious killer, but also their own personalities and weaknesses. Much Christian fiction falls into the trap of featuring an artificial conversion story. Terri Blackstock shows that writers can craft a mouth-watering Christian story without artificially sprinkling it with an obvious theological twist of this kind, and yet retain a deeper spiritual significance. In the afterword, Blackstock explains that the idea of her book came after a personal struggle with her faith, and the growing awareness that faith needs to be put into action. "I thought I believed, I said I believed - but I did nothing to put the belief into action. I was neither hot nor cold, but luke-warm, and absolutely fruitless." The title "Evidence of Mercy" describes this important spiritual theme that Blackstock wants to convey. The struggles of the three characters mirror Blackstock's own struggles, as she explains: "the characters interested me because their own spiritual battles were so much like my own: Lynda, a lukewarm Christian who would let someone die without witnessing to him; Jake, an agnostic who couldn't give up the pilot's seat in his life until it was taken from him; and Paige, a spiritual infant on the verge of belief, who lacked the faith to make the final plunge." For instance, Lynda comes to conclude "she'd made a god of an airplane, an altar of her job, and an idol of her ego" (p.38), and Jake realizes the folly of relying on his good looks: "If I'd known I was going to be left with just my character, I'd have worked harder at building some." (p.135) Without taking on an preaching tone that many Christian writers unwittingly do, Blackstock brings out these important spiritual truths by showing them in the lives of her characters in a convincing and persuasive manner. The other three stories in this anthology are equally good. In fact, I find them to be on a higher level than Dee Henderson's popular books.
Terri Blackstock's novels are a welcome addition to the ranks of Christian fiction. The genre has been dominated especially by the historical romance, much of it inferior to secular fictions on most levels. With her successful efforts in suspense fiction genre, Terri Blackstock shows that it doesn't have to be that way (aside from an unnecessary kiss in the last pages), and that Christian writers can successfully take on new genres, and do so with style. As a fan of suspense fiction, I'm grateful to see Christian writers provide exciting alternatives to secular novels in the genre. Move over Mary Higgins Clark!
Fantastic series at a fantastic price!.......2001-06-14
I read the Sun Coast Chronicles series almost a year ago and can't say enough about Terri Blackstock's ability to weave suspense, mystery, romance and inspiration in such an entertaining package.
In the Sun Coast Chronicles, there are four stories with interrelated characters in the same town in California. Each hero/heroine is forced to deal with something outside themselves, usually a bad character and at the same time, something inside themselves, their faith in God.
Terri Blackstock is one of the premier Christian writers, and I highly recommend this series. And to get all four of them together in such a great price, it makes me wish I hadn't read them yet!
Great Mystery and Suspense.......2001-03-08
I finished this book in two days, I was so caught up in it. It is much better than the Newpointe 911 I started with. I would encourage anyone who likes suspense and mystery to read it. Although I have figured out the killer rather quickly it still kept my interest.

Book Description
It was indisputably love at first sight. But Victoria Lyndon was merely the teenaged daughter of a vicar. . .while Robert Kemble was the dashing young earl of Macclesfield. Surely what their meddlesome fathers insisted must have been true–that he was a reckless seducer determined to destroy her innocence. . . and she was a shameless fortune hunter. So it most certainly was for the best when their plans to elope went hopelessly awry.
Even after a seven–year separation, Victoria–now a governess–still leaves Robert breathless. But how could he ever again trust the raven–haired deceiver who had shattered his soul? And Victoria could never give her heart a second time to the cad who so callously trampled on it the first. But a passion fated will not be denied, and vows of love yearn to be kept. . . even when one promises the moon.

"The Big Misunderstanding" after love at first sight.......2007-03-30
Do you believe in love at first sight? Julia Quinn states in her introduction that she doesn't think that she does but she decided to write a book about it. Obviously this would be a very short book if hero and heroine fell in love at first sight and then lived happily ever after so in order to produce some more pages it couldn't go that smoothly; thus the "Big Misunderstanding".
Regency novels these days seem to fall into two groups - the "Big Misunderstanding" group or the "Pride & Prejudice" group (where the hero and heroine dislike each other at the start and have to slowly change their opinions). Generally I prefer the latter sort of book as there tends to be more character growth and variety whereas the former type can often get annoying in the lengths the author has to go to in order to keep the protagonists apart with the misunderstanding when one quick clear conversation would sort it out.
And that's my problem with "Brighter than the moon". Hero and heroine were about to elope but it was prevented and both then went through the next seven years assuming the other had been at fault and didn't really care about them. When they meet again, with Victoria working as a governess and Robert, the Earl of Macclesfield, living the life of a rake, they talk (or argue) at length about what separated them but neither explains their side of what happened. If they had done then the Big Misunderstanding would be over, as would the story. Eventually Robert finds out some of it from Victoria's sister but even when that is sorted he has rubbed her up the wrong way enough for her not to fall into his arms. Most of this book they spend bickering - Victoria in a decidedly unladylike way - and Robert also seems to spend a lot of his time stalking her and generally hassling her.
For me this book didn't really work. Aside from the historicity (Regency English people speaking modern-day American, Victoria's behaviour being completely inappropriate for her station, role, era, you name it) I found that I couldn't get into the story enough to really like the characters. By the end I was a bit bored with them both and it got monstrously soppy by the end - too cheesy for this English reader. There's a token baddie in the story who features in about four pages, various other minor characters who come and go, but most of it is about Victoria and Robert and for me there wasn't enough to their story.
Just not worth the time.......2006-10-25
You could tell immediately that this was an early effort of Quinn's and frankly, I am surprised it was published. It was that bad. The plot was too simple and she did not have the experience required to extend it into a full length novel. Boring, boring, boring. I never imagined I would tire of hearly a hero say "I Love You", but I definitely did as the over-worked phrase was repeated way too many times for it to carry the importance you associate with the words. None of the spirited, funny trademark dialog that we have come to expect from Quinn. Stay away from this one unless you just have nothing else to do.
First half yes, second half no.......2006-06-16
Okay so this is the story of love at first sight, two people who want to elope and are mislead by both their fathers so that they think they are being deceived by one another.
Seven years later they meet again, they still love each other and all dishonesty is brought to the fore front, everything straightened out and all should be well......
Well this is where the book took a nose dive for me, since I was thoroughly engrossed in the first half of the book.
So after they meet again seven years later and find out that they both deceived by their fathers, why didn't they just get back together like normal people, instead Miss Quinn decided to let them bicker with each other page after page after page.
The Heroine now decides (after she was almost raped twice, has no money, living in the slumps where a man got stabbed) that she wants her independence, mind you this is after seven years of being independent.
She also now realizes that although she still fiercely loves our Hero, she would be better off being by herself.....okay can I stop here and say give me a break....I know this is fiction but c'mon, even with writing fiction sure Julia must have a little bit of knowledge about adding a bit of reality to the book.
What woman (a vicar's daughter at that time) would turn down marriage to an earl (Who she loves and he loves just has passionately) to be poor and live the life she is so dissatisfied with after living it for seven years.....
Not only did I want to burn this book, the sudden appearance of characters, oh the hero just happened to be part of a house party with people he didn't like to begin with, the Governess being very rude to an earl in front of the ton, he just happened to stop by a dress makers store.....I could go on and on.
I know most people would say this is Julia Quinn's earlier work and does not compare to her work now, but I disagree, I have read the last two of the Bridgerton series, (The first four were great! The duke and I, The Viscount who loved me, An offer from a Gentleman, Romancing Mr Bridgerton. I will give credit were credit is due) and this formula she has adopted of letting the Hero and Heroine go on and on for pages at a time bickering is evident in the last two Bridgerton series (When he was Wicked and It's in his Kiss) My head reels from reading it, seems like two 7 year olds going at it.
One word Immature!
So if this review is not helpful, (I always say this) please don't be discouraged, just don't spend more than a penny on a used copy.
Good, but not her best.......2006-06-14
I love Julia Quinn's writing style and humor, so I always enjoy her books. Other people have problems with the fighting between Robert and Victoria, but that is when the story really picked up for me. I found the love at first sight beginning to be very unrealistic. But I think the humor in this book redeems the first 50 pages. Yes, there is a big misunderstanding, and yes, all this could be solved if the hero and heroine would actually talk instead of fighting, BUT the fighting brings us many funny moments. This is definitely a good escape from reality.
Wonderful Read!.......2006-03-23
Although the misunderstand was serious, the book did not warp itself into a tedius melodramatic tale! The characters were absolutely fantastic and the interaction between them just made you melt. I disagree with one the reviewers about Victoria "Torrie" being stubborn and cliche! I was glad that she did not give in right away! Even if they are both somewhat to blame for the misunderstanding, I think more of it should be heaped upon the hero! This was why I found it amusing that Victoria made him work for it a bit! It's great to see an arrogant man on his knees!
