Book Description

“While Desert Sons deftly handles the difficult and sometimes dangerous coming out process of young lovers Ryan and Scott, the sequel finds that lingering tensions remain, while new challenges continue to surface. Infidelity, jealousy, town gossip, and buried feelings threaten to destroy their relationship. Worse yet, the threat of violence looms constantly in their lives. Fans of Desert Sons will surely cherish this conclusion to its story lines.”—Duane Simolke, author of The Acorn Stories

New challenges face the boys when they come out to family and friends in Into This World We’re Thrown. As their relationship becomes public, Scott and Ryan deal with heartache and jealousy.

Scott and Ryan’s relationship is challenged further when Ryan’s grandmother dies. This sends Ryan into a downward spiral, causing him to re-evaluate his decisions, including his life with Scott. While Scott is dealing with the possible destruction of his first relationship, he learns about a secret admirer at school who will stop at nothing to make Scott his.

Will this secret admirer ruin Scott and Ryan’s relationship? Will Ryan pull himself from the depths of his emotional turmoil? Can the boys uncover and express their love for one another before it’s too late?

All of this is revealed, explored and concluded in Into This World We’re Thrown.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable sequel.......2007-09-09

'Into This World We're Thrown' presents an enjoyable sequel to the author's previous 'Desert Sons'. It is difficult to create a sequel to a story of coming out and first love, but Mark Kendrick succeeds admirably in the tracing the further development of these two boys and their love, through various troubles that life presents to them. ITTWWT reminds me a bit of another favorite, 'Enchanted April', in the way that looming disaster always turns the corner and becomes joy.

5 out of 5 stars Wow..........2007-03-27

This book was good and bad. It was a great book with an awesome story. The problem was I could not put it down. Whenever I would read a chapter to stop for the night, something would happen in it and I could not stop reading. It is definately a book I reccomend!

3 out of 5 stars Cutting through the fog.......2007-03-26

This is a book that cast a light on a typical gay teenage dillemma of coming to grips with their sexuality and battling homophobia. It should be must read for anyone who finds themselves in that situation.

4 out of 5 stars "Happily Ever After Takes Work".......2007-01-22

Really more four and a half stars, and I cannot quarrel with a five star rating. The boys are as adorable as in the first book, but they have some really difficult issues to deal with in this one: infidelity, mental illness, gay bashing, etc. I love the boys and their families and I believe the author did an excellent job of dealing with some really difficult issues for teenagers to deal with. Well worth a read, and would be worth a sequel some years down the road to see how the boys deal with finishing the process of becoming adults and trying to keep a love affair together. Good job.

1 out of 5 stars into this world we're thrown.......2006-11-07

ryan and scott from 'desert sons' continue their adventures. their desert home suddenly seems to be bursting from the seams with homosexuals, each of whom seem to have some wicked agenda. the boys must deal with all of this while also dealing with stresses on their relationship.
i, like another reviewer, made the mistake of buying both 'desert sons' and this book at the same time. this is a very sloppy work. the characters are, or become, incredibly two-dimensional. all the boys seem to only have 'sex' as a hobby. the reactions of most characters to plot points is either forced or ridiculous. the time of the story, never really established, is suddenly set as 1990/91 - in quite a jarring fashion, seeing the assumption is that it is occuring in the modern day. again, the editing is poor to non-existent. see if you can get by the three or four lines containg about twenty "huffs" without doing a doubletake. every character seems to have a veritable horn of plenty attached to their bank account. the finale, as it is, does nothing but wraps everything up like a neat little package. very disappointing sequel to a very disappointing book.

When you look past the cover of Martha Stewart's latest effort, you find it's not all about framing your fern collection. (Whew!) It is, however, about defining your home's style using accessories that look expensive but (generally) aren't. There's some very practical and budget-conscious advice here in the chapters about pictures, tables and stools, lamps and shades, shelves, screens and mirrors, and pillows and throws. You can disguise the humble origins of inexpensive adjustable shelving by adding wood trim around the edges and painting everything, including the metal standards and braces, to match the wall color. You can break up or conceal space with screens you make yourself from plain wood panels or old windows. You can update small outdoor tables with do-it-yourself mosaic tile that goes on in one piece. You can, of course, make a large framed entryway mirror from an $800 slab of mirror glass, as Martha does-- but really, no one will check your bank statement to see how much you spent, and it will reflect just as clearly with inexpensive hardware-store mirror glass. Some of the best projects are for sofa pillows, bed and table linens, and lampshades. Though Martha's voice isn't much in evidence in the text, her concepts are definitely here: the instructions are simple and straightforward and the look clean, comfortable and unfussy. --Barrie Trinkle

Really nice book, to read and to have as a coffee table book

    1 out of 5 stars I had a bad experience.......2004-06-10

I spent a few weeks following her suggestions and thousands on the materials. We had a dinner party to show off the ideas I used and some people were polite with compliments. My husband found a few of our "friends" laughing at Martha's ideas.

A friend later confided that some of the people thought the Martha ideas I implemented were pathetic. I changed most of the things back and my husband was furious. I cried for a week. Maybe she deserves jail time after my experience.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, practical ideas.......2004-04-05

This book is the follow-on to "How to Decorate," Martha's first book. This book concentrates on the small details: how to display pictures, how to arrange your collections, and so on. The introductory chapter on how to display pictures and photographs is particularly good, giving ideas (complete with beautiful photographs) on how to display pictures and explaining principles such as where to place pictures, how to arrange them, and why certain arrangements of pictures work in certain places and not others.

The book emphasizes Martha's trademark, which is finding inexpensive but beautiful pieces at garage sales, refinishing them, and adapting them to new uses. Many of the ideas she presents, such as refinishing an old footstool and turning it into a stereo stand, are practical and attractive.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner by Martha.......2004-01-16

In the long line of excellently crafted books, Decorating Details qualifies as very useful, quality speaks highly for Martha. Detailed photos on top quality paper, have become a mainstay with her books. The book covers pictures, tables & stools, lamps & shades, shelves, screens & mirrors, and pillows & throws. Each section has detailed instructions, for making in making lamp shades there are detailed photos, as well as, written instructions for drafting, decorating, and making a lamp shade. Decorating Details give simple and easy ideas for decorating any space.

5 out of 5 stars simple, uncomplicated home living.......2000-08-24

I'm in the process of simplifying and optimizing my home's living quarters. I have to admit that I get depressed after looking at other decorating books - for instance, where rooms have dreamy coordinating wallpaper, border, paint & fabrics. This is a decorating book that doesn't stress me out wishing I had a particular piece of furniture or a million dollars. It's the projects themselves that remind you don't need to have to go and buy expensive things around the world. With a little creativity and some elbow grease, you can pick up items from the local home or fabric warehouse and keep it simple. I'd like to make the folding screen (p. 98) from lightweight boards, hinges and casters. I may cover them with fabric instead of paint. But I'll probably start with the linen pillowcases (p. 130) simply because I've got the materials for it. Notice that all the rooms are quite simple. The living room has a couch, a couple of chairs, some nesting tables. period. The projects are "light bulbs" that go on and make us remark: "why didn't I think of that?" OR: "that's what I am aiming for."

4 out of 5 stars Leaves you begging for more..........2007-01-09

PI Rachel Anderson has been asked by a powerful senator to look into the possibility that his recently deceased stepdaughter might have had a child while at college, which puts her on the CIA radar since they are investigating the same college. There's bad blood between Rachel and the CIA as her brother Nick died under a shroud of secrecy while on assignment in the Middle East. Rachel bargains with her CIA handler for details on her brother's last assignment. What she doesn't count on is former lover Elijah Trent being thrown into the mix.

Thinking that she's investigating a possible black market baby ring, Rachel discovers that the senator was not truthful about his reasons for hiring her. Further investigation uncovers a more sinister truth, where blond haired/blue eyed coeds with few family ties are recruited to join an exclusive club of "Eves," and they are slowly brainwashed and sent to Thailand as sexual slaves forced to perform in hard core videos for Asian crime kingpin Kito, the man responsible for Elijah's 30 months of captivity in a sadistic prison.

Bach's political thriller is a chilling and breathtakingly fast paced romantic suspense featuring a strong heroine who can stand up to her male counterparts. Elijah and Rachel steam up the pages as they try to contain their lust for one another. And Bach leaves readers begging for a sequel to conclude the exciting and unfinished storyline.

    3 out of 5 stars Fine.......2006-06-01

Basic plot: Rachel is a p.i. hired to go undercover at a private, religious college. The CIA bribe her into helping them while she's there. (Her brother was a CIA agent killed in a classified operation and the lure of photos and info about him convince her to agree.) Her ex-lover and her brother's best friend Elijah is the CIA man she's supposed to be helping. They uncover a mind-control scam where women are brainwashed and sent to Thailand to perform in S&M videos.

The writing was good, the story was interesting. I think this author should write thrillers or other regular fiction, because the only thing weak about this novel was the love story. The scenes involving the lovers had many cliches. The sex scenes didn't make me feel at all passionate. But I kept reading because I wanted to find out what happened in the plot. So in that aspect I would indeed recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars A THRILL OF A READ!.......2006-03-26

Project Eve is so much better than Pure Dynamite that I am surprised it's by the same author! I did not even finish the previous book because of the annyoing heroine but Project Eve had me glued from start to finish. It has all the elements I look for in a romantic suspense - to die for hero, kick-ass heroine, breath-taking sexual tension AND Ms Bach delivers some scorching sex scenes, too. Whilst there is no great mystery about the villains, the suspense is there up to the final page which left me going AAAARGH! Where's Nick, Rachel's brother?

Really, I never expected Project Eve to be this good after Pure Dynamite's slow and disappointing story despite a promising beginning. If you enjoy romantic suspense, don't miss this one!

4 out of 5 stars Prepare yourself for a creepy romantic suspense.......2005-08-14

Project Eve has a creative story line, with intriguing twists and turns. Not much of a surprising reveal, but a great deal of suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat and have your heart pounding with anticipation.
The only reason I did not give this a full five stars was because the romance part of it was lacking. It definitely did not have the intensity like "PURE DYNAMITE" did, but was still okay. I do hope that the next book follows up on the missing brother story line. To leave us hanging and not finish it would be a shame. This book is definitely worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars tense romantic suspense thriller.......2005-06-27

In Richmond, Virginia, Jimmy Purcell persuades his cousin private investigator Rachel Anderson to take on US Senator Thurston Benjamin IV as a client though she believes politicians are pains as image means everything. Benjamin explains that his beloved wife suffers from leukemia diagnosed just after her daughter Cindy died in a car accident. He recently went through Cindy's things only to find a journal that says she was pregnant, but never mentions whether she gave birth. He admits he doubts the veracity because of the source, but wants Rachel to find the child if there is one though that will end any White House aspirations. His stepdaughter attended Shepherd's Cross College in West Virginia where the associated powerful Shepherd's Cross Church headed by influential William Hanson runs a black market baby ring.

CIA operative Elijah Trent, who has a past with Rachel, encourages her to go undercover at Shepherd's Cross College. Reluctantly Rachel agrees only to LEARN OF PROJECT EVE, female students brainwashed to become perfect spouses for selected sexual predatory politicians. However, exposing the school seems improbable as William's power reaches to the top of the Hill and across the pond to the White House.

Except for the righteous politically activist religious right, fans of romantic suspense will vote up for this tense thriller filled with numerous twists and turns, perhaps too many. The story line is action-packed as courageous, obstinate Rachel learns that image is not the issue, survival is. Elijah is her perfect counterpart as an alpha male willing to die for Rachel, but frustrated with how she ignores his dictates. Lauren Bach composes a fine tale of intrigue that the sub-genre's mainstream readers will enjoy.

      Book Description

The project to map the human genetic codes has been widely hailed as a monumental achievement with vast medical promise. Yet the project is also fraught with ambiguities and, Susan Thistlethwaite claims, great potential dangers to society. This important book combines a basic primer on genetic research with ethical reflection by an interdisciplinary team on key questions and a deeper look, in light of such research, at what it means to be human.

Part 1 of the book places genetic research in historical perspective, including the historical prickliness between science and religion. It shows how we have gotten from Gregor Mendel's experiments with peas to today's Human Genome Project. Part 2 explores ethical issues posed by genetic testing, screening, and counseling; gene therapy; stem-cell research; dangers of misuse through genetic identification; and engineering of particular populations (violent people, ethnic groups, gays and lesbians). Part 3 explores the possibilities of reconstruing human identity for the coming "biological age." Contributors include Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite, Laurel Schneider, Lainie Ross, Theodore W. Jennings Jr., Ken Stone, and Lee Butler.

      5 out of 5 stars Great book~ different!.......2007-01-30

For the second time, I've had the privelege of reading one of Donna Dawson's books to review. Wow! I don't know if I've just been shopping for the wrong genre of literature or if she truly is a one-of-a-kind novelist, but I suspect it's the latter.

I cannot say enough about Donna's writing style. There is so much detail, in both books that I've read so far, that I just feel drawn right into the story. It is obvious that Donna puts alot of time and research into the writing of her novels. Each character has a distinct personality, unlike many books I've read where the characters all just blend together. And the plot is ever changing and moving~ always holding your interest.

This particular book, "The Adam & Eve Project", is about a committee of world leaders who scheme together to create a perfect human race. The story spans several decades, beginning with World War II (and Hitler's reign) and ending with modern times. The story revolves around the goal of this particular committee and the many children that have been kidnapped to help meet this goal (through genetics and human manipulation). This is not a book for wimps~ it will keep you guessing 'til the very last page!

"The Adam & Eve Project" contains drama, suspense, murder, government intrigue, and the ultimate means to freedom~ salvation through Christ Jesus.

If you are looking for a book that will hold your interest and give you something to think about long after you've turned the last page, then I highly recommend "The Adam & Eve Project". I wait with anticipation for her next novel~ "Vengeance"!

Jacqueline Wilson is a bestselling author in England, second only to J. K. Rowling.

Charlie's world is changing -- for the worse. Her new teacher refuses to call her anything but Charlotte. (Blech!) And forces her to sit next to Jamie Edwards, the most revolting stuck-up boring boy in the whole class. (Yuck!) And assigns her a project on the boring Victorian period. (Ugh!) But Charlie's dreary research--and her active imagination--leads to some interesting discoveries. Like Lottie . . . a nursemaid whose life in the Victorian era holds some interesting parallels to Charlie's own.

Lottie's real name is Charlotte, but noone calls her that..... until this 'horrible' new teacher Mrs Beckworth arrives, and doesn't let her sit next to Lisa (who Lottie has saved the best place for), but makes poor Lottie sit next to that swot Jamie. Lottie hates Mrs Beckworth, and sends around humorous poems about trains and teases about Jamie. Lottie's teenage mum, Jo, is having problems with work but suddenly Mrs Beckworth gives the class a project. it is about the victorians and Lottie writes a diary about it. she buys Jamie, who comes her friend in the end, some postcards and everything but then Jo gets a nerdy man called Mark as a boyfriend because she babysits his son, Robin, who is small and shy and has a little stuffed robin toy that his mum made for him before she died. lottie lets him use her felt pens but he just draws a house and his mum and dad and himself. when Jo and Mark go on a love ride on a picnic where Robin is sick, Lottie sees them kissing and bullies poor robin until he runs away from home and then there is a search party because everyone is worried and he gets found and put in hospital and lottie makes him a cake and draws him pictures of birds. lottie suddenly feels bad and crys in her bathroom because she doesn't feel old and hates herself. she even needs the comfort of her old barbies, which are packed away in her drawer and she and jo used to dress them and drive them to posh parties to make them dance, and jo enjoyed this more than lottie! you should read these other books too:

5 out of 5 stars Really cool great book!.......2005-07-13

This is such a fantastic book! It's about Charlie who lives with her mum Jo in a flat. Her mean teacher, Miss Beckworth wants the class to do a school project on the Victorians.
"Boring!" she thinks at first, but gradually she likes it more
and more. She writes a project and wants to keep it private.
Her project is about Lottie and how she copes with her frustrating life. First she's an ordinary eleven year old girl
living with her family in a cottage but then she has to leave school and get a job as a nursery maid. The children she looks after are such naughty little monkeys and she doesn't lke this job.
Stupid snooty swotty boy Jamie Edwards is so annoying to Charlie. YOU'VE GOT TO READ IT IT'S SUCH A BRILL BOOK!!!!
Don't call this book stupid. Honestly, don't. If you think it's
stupid, read "Best Friends" or "Vicky Angel" or "Girls in tears". THEY'RE the stupid books. OK, so that's all I want to say.

5 out of 5 stars lottie or charlie im so confused!.......2004-12-20

charlies life is really changing. Her teacher is mean, makes her sit next to Jamie Edwards, and assigns a "dreary" projecton the "dreary" victorian period. So charlie decides to create a diary for her project, and creates Lottie, a Victorian nurserymaid, and history comes to life.

charlies mom is also causing trouble in her life. Charlie thinks she has a boyfriend, and that can't happen!!!!!

i loved this book and how Charlie brought Lottie to life.
i would recamend this book to anyone.

          5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Favorite!.......2003-08-16

This is definitely one of my favorite books. I guess sixth graders will enjoy it most, but parents will also enjoy it too. Jacqueline Wilson really knows how to get into the world of 11-year-olds.

Charlie Enright has a lot of problems at school. Her new teacher is strict and mean. She assigns the sixth-graders a Victorian project right at the beginning of the year. Also, she makes Charlie sit next to Jamie Edwards, which Charlie isn't sure she likes or hates.

She also is having problems with her friends. They have abandoned the 'We Hate Boys Club' and are now very interested in boys and not paying much attention to her.

And her home lifes not that wonderful either. Her single mother has just lost her job, but she finds another one quickly. It turns out that she has fallen in love with her boss and Charlie has got to stop her. Somehow. Someway.

Will Charlie's problems ever end? Read this great book to find out!

          5 out of 5 stars Lottie Project-what a book!!!.......2003-07-16

I have read many books from Jacqueline Wilson, and have admired her ability to express how kids feel, what they want. This is all true. Being a kid, i have lots of friends that match those in the story. This book, Lottie Project, is one of my favourite books she wrote. I know how it feels to be forced to write a project, but i have never wrote a project, that like Charlotte's, matches my own daily life.
In school, i have just learnt about the Victorians, and told my teacher, Miss Battram, about the book. She too admitts that it is a good book and should be added into the Victorian learning program for year 5 next year.
Everyone can see that Jacqueline Wilson has shown us how an 11year old girl's life can be similar to a maid in the Victorian times, and how they coped with it.
This book is really great for everyone to read, maybe single parents should take a peek in this book too as it will tell single parents how their child feels when they start dating someone else. then, they can talk it through with their child, so mistakes like in Lottie Project, that Charlotte Enright had to cope with, will not happen.
Furthermore, this book is very good to be used in Victorian sessions in school, seeing as the book is very funny, and still useful in teaching about a 11 year old girl's life in the Victorian times.
