Great Fun, But No O'Brian.......2001-03-31
When I was younger, I picked up "Sloop of War" after I had run out of Hornblower novels. With the death of Patrick O'Brian, I returned to the Kent novels which I had stopped reading at "Signal -- Close Action !"
Bolitho hasn't changed. Sentimental -- brave -- generous -- loyal -- self-critical -- larger than life. Whereas Gene Roddenberry pictured Kirk as a 23rd century Hornblower, reserved, self-doubting, internally tortured, brilliant, and brave despite himself, Kent writes Bolitho the way William Shatner played Kirk.
The results are usually entertaining, as here. Kent draws ship-to-ship, cutting-out, and fleet actions as expertly as anyone who writes in this genre, plus he slips in an amount of sentiment that would make O'Brian or Forrester cringe, but it works because we know what a softie Bolitho is underneath. Kent draws the relationship between Bolitho and his officers, especially his nephew Adam, his flag captain Keen, and his cox'n Allday, affectingly (although the conflict with his old friend Herrick, now also a flag officer, seems contrived). The return of Catherine Pareja is a great move, as it allows Kent to write himself out of the hole he got into when he killed off Cheney, Bolitho's great love, then brought back her shadow in the form of Belinda, her look-alike cousin. Catherine brings back a little danger and spunk in the female lead.
But Kent's problems show between battles. There are occasional non-sequiturs in the writing. The dialogue can be stiff. Characters can act inconsistently with the way they were originally drawn, when it serves the plot. The final plot twist this time is awkward and falls flat. Kent handles ships, lines and sails well, but his knowledge of the rest of the history of the period seems sketchy, and his research regarding the workings of the Royal Navy at the time is nowhere near the level of Forrester or O'Brian.
If you're interested in the period and great characters, start with those two. If you love action, start with Bernard Cornwell. If you've read all of those, despite the flaws, Kent is well worth reading -- but we miss ye, Jack and Stephen !
Honour This Day.......2000-05-06
Unwilling to take a desk job at the Admiraltry in london,Vice Admiral Sir Richard Bolitho asks for sea duty, always a frigate captain at heart. He asks for the Hyperion, the first ship of line he had ever commanded. He is still having trouble with his eyes;he is partially blind in his left eye, blinded by sand from a bucket an enemy ball had blown apart. He has difficulty adjusting to staying aloof of the day-to-day running of his ship' He is estranged from his wife,Belinda. Arriving in Antigua in 1804 his orders are to capture a Spanish treasure ship. In Antigua he meets again Catherine Pareja, his love of seven years ago,now married to Viscount Somervell,Inspector General. They find their love has not diminished despite the years of separation. He leads his small fleet to LaGuaira where the Spanish treasure ship laden with gold and silver destined for Spain is harbored. His mission is to capture this prize which Britian sorely needs. After this mission he returns to London where he is ordered to th Mediterranean to intercept and destroy the Spanish fleet which is to join the French to invade England. the sea battles are extremey realistic. This reader had the sense of being there feeling the pain, the chaos, the tension, viewing the carnage. This book is an education of that period of history, the geography of the area involved, the social and political order of the day. It is a lesson in the intricacies of seamanship. It is a model for the management of men. The people are real with the relationsips between the officers and crew, with the ideals of honor, duty and loyalty. The regular characters have become friends to me. This is the 17th book depicting the life of Richard Bolitho. If you haven't read any others, don't miss the opportunity to do so.

Love Her.......2007-09-15
I am an African American Woman, and I honestly don't know how I begin reading Bertrice Small - but I have not stopped. Skye O Malley and the entire legacy is a must read for those who enjoy historical romances and a little erotical to spice it up.
You never know how her books will end, and that keeps you going. She is my favorite author in the Historical Romance era.
Keep them coming - and don't listen to those that blast your work, your loyal readers will remain that - and keep on buying and reading your books. Let them have their kicks.
Keep up the awesome work, I also love to write, but you made me realize that it takes an unbelievable talent - dedication and research - so now I am just an avid romance reader.
a very very very good book.......2007-05-07
This book is just one of the many books by Bertrice Small that I have read. I bought this copy for a friend, in hopes to get her started on reading all of Bertrice Small's books. If your looking for a book that makes you feel as if you are there living in the book, this author is the best.
Misogynist garbage - selling patriarchy as "romance".......2007-02-18
I agree entirely with the reviewer [not the idiot who commented about blondes] about the anti-woman, misogynisitic claptrap that is this novel. And all of the work of Beatrice Small - much of which I read during the 80's to early 90's.
Small's has been passing off as "heroines" women who in fact are often very narcissistic parasites with singularly selfish motives as their most defining character trait. This novel is no different; the title character is used like a call girl for most of her life, but this is portrayed by the author as "strength". The title character primarily becomes a schemer on par with a Medici. This character gives birth to something like 8 or 9 children from the time she's a teenager to middle aged, and yet manages to retain her figure - this in a time when women of her class weren't doing much besides getting dressed, attending parties, and perhaps directing the servants, activities that modern women know wouldn't keep one's figure in the same shape as it was when was 18 yrs old! Without a modern day BallyFitness membership, I find it incredibly ludicrous this title character wouldn't look exactly like other women who give birth every few years for most of their adult lives!
This novel, and all of Small's works, feature prominently men who use women as toilet paper, and women who literally can't give two hoots less about their own children [Skye treats her children like the pawns they are as they get a little older, as she herself wasn't there to raise them for the most part]. These people aren't admirable in the least in Small's novels.
The depiction of this character as a willing & unwilling exploited sex object did nothing but inform me about the author's own ideas about sexual relationships - that women are nothing if not Playboy fantasies & as such, should appreciate being used like prostitutes. But only if the women are as gorgeous as modern-day super models, and the men are rich as kings [gee, isn't this the same ideal that the media portrays for young women to aspire to nowadays?]. Women of lesser beauty - eh - they're not worthy of Small's attentions in these novels.
I think Small as an author is as obsessed with the false female ideal of 'beauty' as is Madison Ave. & many deluded women today. It's really pitiful actually, that women in Small's novels, as well women in real life, all believe that beauty is the only real key to love & Happiness. {and I don't write that as a homely woman - I was born lucky and very very pretty} These novels have a strong stench of misogyny in them that only someone with brain damage would fail to detect.
The messages of most historical romances is very much anti-feminism [and if you look at the author's themselves, this makes sense as many are from the Bible Belt & live very "traditional" lifestyles themselves]. I'd actually burn these books if I had a daughter who wanted to read them. From personal experience, I wasted many hours reading this garbage as a young woman, believing the not so subtle messages in these stupid woman hating novels, and as a result, tried to conform my own life to ideals portrayed in these silly useless books. I should've been spending my time going to law school or getting the graduate degree instead. Only later did I wake up and realize what utter trash these historical novels truly are, and how dangerous to the minds of young women. These novels all have a form of really punitive patriarchy in them that should scare women who can think for themselves.
puzzled.......2006-06-13
Are women cursed to go for Mr. Wrong?
The heroine loses her memory and is carried away to the babary coast to be sold into white slavery. The hero, the whoremaster of algeria, purchases her to add to his stable of whores only to decide after her training in the 'erotic arts' to keep her for his own personal use rather than send her to one of his brothels.
My First Historical Romance.......2005-05-11
This book came highly recommended to me b/c I was looking for a romance novel that would knock my socks off. That is what I got. Yes, there were some areas in the novel that were a little disturbing (the incest), but they did not last, and they were not glorified. I enjoyed riding the rollercoaster with Skye through her troubles, loves, and adventures. I found the romance aspect of the novel unpredictable. There were times when I was so disappointed, I wasn't sure if I would be happy to see Skye with another lover, but then Small surprises you. Small has a gift for creating very likeable characters (especially men!)
I was extremely pleased with the way things turned out for Skye. The ending was perfect and it had been a long time since I was satisfied with the ending of a novel.
I am new to the genre, therefore I cannot compare this to other romances, but if you have not read any yet, here is the place to start! I have already started the next book in the series, All The Sweet Tomorrows..I'm psyched!

Wise Old Bess Knew The Truth!.......2007-03-27
The queen's gnarled fingers pinched the girl's baby-smooth cheeks. "Do not deceive yourself, Valentina," the wise and majestic old woman croaked. "Journey to the East if you will, but do not expect to remain cool and untouched forever. You are an O'Malley, like your cursed grandmother. Your will is strong, but your nature is hot and passionate."
Valentina St. Michaels determined to discover the secret of her birth. Though raised an Elizabethan noble, her mother was once a harem slave to a great sultan of India. Val has no wish to repeat her mother's sensual experiences, but when her trading fleet is wrecked in a storm fate tosses her from one devastatingly handsome man to another. Forced to yield to her own sensual nature in order to survive, Val soon discovers that wise old Queen Bess knew the truth about her passionate nature. But will Val become passion's master or a slave like her mother? Will she ever reclaim her royal identity? Will she discover love as well as pleasure?
Is this a different story?.......2004-04-17
This umpteenth sequel of the Skye O'Malley saga doesn't seem to be like a sequel, it's more like the same story with different names. The same goes for all the sequels of "Skye O'Malley". Heroine finds happiness, heroine is kidnapped by a cruel Eastern man and forced to be his slave (but sometimes she secretly enjoys it), then she is happily reunited with her beloved. The storyline is always the same, only the name of the characters change. Seems like the O'Malleys are genetically destined for the same fate. Ms Small needs to move on and come with something new.
A sidenote: I don't know why does Ms Small and lots of other romance writers think that women love these heartless macho guys. I wonder, maybe most of these writers are male under a female pseudonym? Anyway, I'm fed up and finished with them. Even a Stephen King novel can be more romantic than these "ooh I'm captured and raped and being humiliated an enjoy it soo much" books.
My favorite in the O'Malley Saga.......2000-06-16
Valentina is my favorite heroine in the O'Malley series and more like Skye than Skye's offspring is. When Valentina goes to court to serve Elizabeth I, I was heartbroken. Mrs. Small's exceptional writing and incredible detail showed me how the lively days of courtlife in Elizabeth's youth had dramatically changed and become a somber place as Elizabeth approached her last days. When a family secret is revealed, Valentina shows us her adventurous spirit and heads East! Her adventures are incredible! I appreciated how Mrs. Small touched on "The Kadin" through the duchy of San Lorenzo and reintroducing us to Esther Kira (who met Valentina's mother in "A Love for All Time"). Also, the appearance of Cica Pasha tied into "Love Wild and Fair." Wonderful! (A note to Mrs. Small: Since you have touched on Esther Kira so often, how about a book dedicated to her entire life. Just a thought.) I wept at least 3 times and was filled with anger, frustration, joy, fear, and triumph as Mrs. Small weaved her magic spell of words and phrases and pulled me into her story. If you haven't read the O'Malley series, you might get a little confused. You should at least read "A Love for All Time" which is the tale of Aidan, Valentina's mother, and is the basis of much of this book's plot.
One of my favorites in the Skye O'Malley saga.......2000-05-13
I truly enjoyed Valentina and thought her character better than Velvet and Jasmine. I loved how this book touched on so many other stories. The Mediteranean island where Janet Leslie was taken (see "The Kadin") and the return of Cica Pasha. (see "Love Wild and Fair"). Of course, I loved seeing Esther Kira again. Valentina is stronger than Aidan, but very much her mother's daughter. I can't say enough good things about this book. There is romance, adventure, and on-the-edge-of-your-seat-suspense.
one harem too many.......2000-04-12
Usually, I love Mrs. Small's books. Her description of theclothes, foods and dwelings of the medival/renissance period arewonderful and so are many of her supporting cast. BUT- after reading Skye O'Malley and AtST, I felt Valentina was a bit of a stupid character who was to stubborn to see the forest for the trees. Her father loves her, her cousin loves her but she has to go to the East and guess what? She ends up in a harem! (surprise, surprise!) These scences are one to many, rape is not appealing in a romance novel even if the heroine is 'betrayed by her body'. I really could bearly finish this one. :-(

Skye is the QUEEN of heroines.........2007-06-23
Skye is truly an amazing woman. She is a sex goddess, pirate, wife to many men, lover, harem girl, and mother. She has ebony hair and blue-green eyes. Her story is remarkable. You have to read it to believe it. No other heroine has been as firey and passionate. I love it!!!!
Customer Reviews:
One Of My Favorite Books!.......2007-07-06
I can't believe this book got such bad reviews. I loved this book so much! I think it's my favorite book in the series. I liked India and Cayman. Their conversations with each other made me smile many times. My favorite part of the book was when India became his body slave (I laughed a couple of times). At the end of the book I wished that Ms. Small had written more about their lives together. I didn't want their story to end. Great book!
I STILL LOVE SMALLS BOOKS, BUT THIS ONE STINKS!.......2006-05-07
IT IS SAD TO SAY THAT THIS BOOK WAS TERRIBLE COMPARED TO THE ORIGINAL SKYE O'MALLEY SERIES WHICH I LOVED. INDIA IS SELF-CENTERED, STUPID AND BRATTY. WHO WANTS TO LOVE THAT???
SKYE'S LEGACY/BEDAZZLED.......2005-09-29
I HAVE BEEN READING, IN SEQUENTIAL ORDER, THE O'MALLEY SAGA AND
SKYE'S LEGACY. UNABLE TO FIND THE LAST SEVERAL I TURNED TO
AMAZON.COM. I RECEIVED EXCELLENT SERVICE FROM THE SOURCES I
USED TO COMPLETE THE SERIES. THANK YOU.
So disappointed!!.......2001-03-31
I usually love Ms. Smalls books. I have been avidly reading them for sometime now. However this storyline is getting quite old. Frankly I am getting a little disgusted how these women from the O'Malley series put up with harems and sharing their men with others. Most of her characters have spit and vineger, however India is just plain stupid and silly. She is not what I would call a firey young woman, but an incrediably shallow, self-centered twit with the intelligance of a nat!
A Pleasant Surprise.......2001-03-23
After Darling Jasmine, which I loathed, I wasn't expecting to enjoy Bedazzled. Imagine my happy surprise when I found this to be a most enjoyable read! Okay, sure, the heroine's a petulant pain in the rear, but then again this is what makes her a "character". I gleaned from how the book was written that Small was somehow thinking of slightly parodizing herself. Most of all, I thought this was a good, straightforward story, lighter on the erotica and more centered on the plot.

Customer Reviews:
The best book in the O'malley seris next to Skye........2006-06-18
I have read and re-read this book until the cover ripped off. Jasmine is her grandmother Skye reborn. She is just as beautiful and strong willed. She also has hot love scenes that rival Skye and her mother Velvet. This will always be one of my favorite books.
Best next to Skye O'Malley.......2005-09-07
I was really impressed with this book. For some reason, I had the notion that I wouldnt like any books after the series with Skye in them. i figured after Skye had died, there couldnt be anything interesting to say. I liked Jasmine almost better than Skye. I found that I still like reading books in reference to her. Maybe its because she is such a strong woman, who gets through everything, and still remains strong. Its an excellent continuation in the Skye O'Malley Legacy.
Wild Jasmine.......2004-01-03
Wild Jasmine was the first book I read by Ms. Bertrice Small and I was in awe. From the first page I was transported to 17th century India and England. From the little girl to the young woman that married her Prince. I was upset with her half-brother, Salim. I cried when she lost her 1st husband, Prince Jamal. Her life was filled with trials and tribulations to make her a very strong woman that is portrayed in this book.
Reality Check.......2003-12-14
Wild Jasmine is an okay book, nowhere near the caliber of some of Bertrice's other works. It's basically the same story, different woman. OF COURSE, she's beautiful, smart, fabulously wealthy, egocentrically aware of all the previous qualities, and widowed several times in the book. Can we have one woman in the O' Malley family who DOESN'T lose her husband/lover to duel, murder, illness, etc., etc? The only points of the book that stick out in my mind are her relationship with her brother, Salim, and Prince Henry.
In my humble opinion, Yasaman knew that Salim had the hots for her, but since she was so overwhealmingly adored by everyone, she didn't quite get that kind of attraction was unhealthy. In her relationship with Henry, I think she showed a surprising unselfishness in that she knew that there was no way she could end up with him, and so made it her duty to make sure that he knew it, too.
Lastly, this book has a few scenes steamy enough to take the wrinkles out of your jammies, but they don't make up for the fact that this book is basically blah.
Entertaining and Exotic.......2003-09-09
Let me preface my review with the confession that I don't like Jasmine. I don't like her in this book and I don't like her in subsequent books. She is spoiled and the essence of conceit.
That being said, I think it's an incredible feat that this novel remains a good read, even if I hate the central character. The sweep of events from India to England is dazzling, although I also couldn't believe Jasmine could adapt to a new culture with the ease that she does. In 2003 we have a knowledge of psychology that would question Jasmine's ability to cope with the violent deaths of her husbands, but that's an enlightenment that had no place in the 1600's and hence not in the novel. What's important is that the plot is relentless and spirited, which makes for a read that seems like it's ending just as it begins. And that's just fine--read it again!

the baroness.......2007-01-25
Bertrice Small is one of my favorite novelists, and so therefore it was of paramount importance that I add this book to my collection. Few fictional characters are so incredible that they need two books written about them, and this one does not disappoint.
This is definitely not a book for the faint-hearted, as it does contain some graphic and explicit rape and S/M scenes. I strongly encourage new readers to keep an open mind while reading Ms. Small's work.
I would have preferred that Ms. Small develop the Nicholas character a bit more. I would have loved to have known how his life turned out. Otherwise, this is a fitting sequel to "Skye O'Malley". A must have for Bertrice Small afficionados.
Anticlimatic (but I enjoyed it anyway)........2002-12-20
This is a very exciting sequel to SKYE O'MALLEY. The action resumes a couple of years after the end of SO. Skye is at last happily married to Niall and in her proper place as the chatelaine of Burke Castle. But with the sudden death of her father-in-law, all goes wrong, and her world is topsy turvy. Niall, who supposedly was murdered by his insane first wife, is reported to be alive; unfortunately, he's now the sex toy of a spoiled Moroccan princess, and to get him back, Skye herself has to pose as a Moroccan's sex toy. I don't want to divulge what happens after this, as I don't want to ruin it for anyone contemplating reading this book, but it's anticlimatic and probably THE most disappointing thing to happen in any Bertrice Small novel.
I thought the Nicholas character was unfairly treated and badly hurt. Skye led him down the primrose path only to dis him at the mention that Niall was alive. And the hurt brough upon Nicholas was especially senseless and unfair in light of how the Niall situation turned out. A handsome, kind-hearted man who would have laid down his life for Skye got his heart broken for no good reason.
I liked Adam -- he was the strongest and most positive character in the book. He was both a good friend and good lover to Skye. I also liked his family, who were all as positive and uplifting as he was.
great book ... some oddities.......2002-08-05
I truly love this book, it was entertaining and well written.
Adam is my favorite Male in the Skye O'Malley series. Im glad Skye ends up with him. I did not like the fact that it is never explored reguarding Nialls poisoning, I assumed the red head princesses slave who gave Niall the jellies did it. Knowing Skye you'd think she would figure it out and get her revenge. That was odd to me. Skyes "hohum" attitude to her rape by Navarre was also strange.
The end did make me cry a little and smile. Skye was strong, smart and not above using her charms to get what she needed. I like her shrewd but not bitchy attitude.
The sex scenes were well done, the ones with Kedar were articulary kinky and hot. I loved them especially but I can see how that might be to vulgar for some readers.
Poor Skye.......2001-12-27
All I can say is give poor Skye a break. It cannot be a real romance novel when half of the book is rape and death. I cried more during this book than I ever had before. And how many husbands can one woman have and how much pain can she suffer through? Just let her be happy
Sweetest taboo!.......2001-04-04
Like all of Ms. Small's books in this series, this one is a winner! Skye never ceases to amaze me. This woman would make a great friend, or a fierce enemy! She battled two queens and still came out a winner. If you like any of Ms. Small's books, you will surely like this one also.
