Book Description
Holy Brotherhood: Romani Music in a Hungarian Pentecostal Church is a musical ethnography of a religious community. After the end of socialism, different ethnic groups in Hungary harbored antagonism toward one another. In one Pentecostal church in Pecs, Hungary, however, both Hungarians and Roma (Gypsies) worshipped and made music together. Three musical repertoires coexisted, each with a separate historical background and complex social meanings: Romani religious song; nineteenth-century gospel hymns originally from the United States; and contemporary Christian pop from the United States. Church members accommodated cultural and musical differences by developing several distinct performance styles.

Ethnomusicology is an Art and not a Seance.......2003-07-16
Combining in-depth musical analysis with personal experience and scholarly ethnography, Barbara Rose Lange's _Holy Brotherhood: Romani Music in a Hungarian Pentecostal Church_ explores Romani or Gypsy music with an ear towards sprirtual meaning and music's profound social context in such a way that the general reader will be satisfied, and the specialist overjoyed. Forsaking jargon for direct reportage of interviews and musical experiences, Lange focuses on actual performance, providing precise translation of songs, practices, rituals--this is a book for the living. The result not only adds insight to outsider interpretations of Gypsy culture, but explicates music's relationship to religion, and Romani or Gypsy culture to the world at large. Delightful.

"Riveting...Crackling...It really moves."
WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD
They were orphans, Chris and Saul--raised in a Philadelphia school for boys, bonded by friendship, and devoted to a mysterious man called Eliot. He visited them and brought them candy. He treated them like sons. He trained them to be assassins. Now he is trying desperately to have them killed.
Spanning the globe, here is an astonishing novel of fierce loyalty and violent betrayal, of murders planned and coolly executed, of revenge bitterly, urgently desired.
Customer Reviews:
Another Winner By This Gifted Author.......2007-09-28
Suspenseful, fast paced and well written. You are drawn in from the beginning and actually like these two "brothers" even though they are trained assassins. The history of how Chris and Sean became brothers was at sometimes sad but showed how their unbreakable bond started early in life. A must read!
Made into TV movie miniseries in the 1980's.......2007-07-10
I wonder whether the miniseries will be converted to DVD?
I will be the first one to buy the DVD.
I CAN'T BELIEVE MOVIE STUDIOS HAVEN'T PICKED THIS ONE UP YET. GEEZ, COME ON HOLLYWOOD........2007-03-05
This Novel should stand proudly next to any all time greats. It currently stands proudly on my bookshelf in between The Godfather and Kane&Abel. If you haven't read this yet I strongly recommend it. If you're into high action oriented novels with twists and turns and novels that chronicles the protagonist's life as a child and how he became the way he is (Assassins) then this is a must.
Trust me. You won't regret it.
UNREAL.......2007-02-11
This is one of my favorite novels of all time. This was my first David Morrell book and I'm glad it was because it made me want to read all of his other novels. Although I love his other books, Brotherhood of the Rose is by far my favorite. His two sequels, Fraternity of the Stone and A League of Night and Fog were really great as well. It's a sad thing he didn't continue the series.
The only other books that stand along side this book for me are:
Kane & Abel by Jeffrey Archer; The Godfather by Mario Puzo; The Christ Clone Trilogy (In His Image, Birth of an age, Acts of God) by David Beauseigneur and for fantasy lovers George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice & Fire series: 4 books so far ( A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, & Feast for Crows )
Very good thriller.......2006-12-04
I haven't read any other books by David Morrell, so Brotherhood of the Rose was my introduction to him. This is a tight, suspenseful tale set in the Cold War days, but is a cut above the usual fare of this sort. The characters are well drawn and the plot has an unusual twist that moved the action right along and kept me guessing as to how the story would end.
The quality of Morrell's writing is quite high and his pacing is steady. I also thought he paid a good deal of attention to details of setting and place, which I appreciate in any sort of novel, but especially in a page turner, as appropriate details add depth to a book that might otherwise be too focused on plot.
If you're looking for a solid thriller that will hold your attention during a boring commute or a long plane ride, this is a good choice.
Book Description
One of the most striking events in the Orthodox Church in recent years has been the extraordinary response to the remarkable life of the reposed leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Archbishop John Maximovitch (1896-1966). He served the Church as bishop, first of Shanghai in the Far East, then of Western Europe, in Paris and Brussels, and finally of Western America in San Francisco.
Manifesting many contrasting forms of sanctity, he was at once a God-inspired theologian and a "Fool-for-Christ," a zealous missionary leader and a feeder of the poor, a severe ascetic and a loving father to orphans. Like Moses, he delivered his flock from oppression, bringing it from communist China to the free world; like the first apostles, he was given power from God to heal wounded souls and ailing bodies.
BLESSED JOHN THE WONDERWORKER offers abundant source materials on the life of this contemporary apostolic Church leader, a pictorial biography and the first verified collection of 100 personal testimonies of his sanctity. Focusing on God's presence, through the experience and impact of one man, this book provides a key for those seeking a life of true holiness in our times.
Customer Reviews:
Engaging without sentimentality.......2000-09-05
This examination of the life and miracles of St. John Maximotvich is heartening reading not only for Orthodox Christians, not only for Californians who are blessed to have his relics, not only for North Americans who, unlike other Orthodox Churches in their "western captivity", have been blessed with their own saints, but for anyone who has a compassionate heart. This well written work is the clearest reading of the life of this remarkable man who had the gift of doing "ordinary things in an extraordinary way." Fr. Seraphim's account is neither sentimental nor disengaged, and the best I have read about this saint's life.
Book Description
Patristic literature provides an age-old, tried and tested model of spiritual life, foreign to fleeting fashions. Throughout the last two thousand years, Christ has raised up patristic writers who have defended that original model. In modern times, however, this model is being pushed aside, the taste for genuine mystical expression is disappearing, and the initial Christian impetus is being disfigured.
That is why the works of St. Theophan the Recluse are so vital for today. He keeps the ancient patristic model sharp and clear, presenting it in modern language. He speaks to contemporary people who have been exposed to new realities, and thus renders inestimable help in linking them to the original Christian impetus and revealing to them the way into the Heavenly Kingdom.
The works of St. Theophan changed the spiritual face of Russia in the 19th century. With the publication of his greatest work, THE PATH TO SALVATION, the English-speaking world now has the opportunity to benefit likewise from this powerful inheritance to the people of the modern age.
Saint Theophan the Recluse is first and foremost a Church Father for modern times. Deeply aware of the roots of the modern age, he reinterprets ancient patristic wisdom in order to adapt it to the needs of the modern unchurched mind, which has been divorced from the Orthodox philosophy of life and even from the rudimentary principles of practical Christianity.
This classic textbook of spiritual life, now being offered in its entirety for the first time in English, seems to have been sent directly to today's readers by the great Russian recluse himself. Every line breathes his profound psychological understanding, his intricate experience in spiritual struggle, and above all his love, compassion and all-consuming desire that every person might be saved. Inspiring the reader with a sober longing for acquiring the Kingdom of Heaven, St. Theophan provides an infallible system for taking the Kingdom by force, in a Christian life of grace and repentance.

Superior Spirituality.......2005-08-03
I have been a spiritual "seeker" for a long time. Disenchanted with 18 years of "traditional" protestant theology I had sought the path of Buddhism and so-called eastern spirituality. Then a good friend introduced me to Eastern Orthodox Christianity - WOW!! I found the lid to the spiritual puzzle that I'd been trying to put together for so many years.
This book by St. Theophan is the real deal. It describes the path to Salvation. Not just how to become a Christian, but how to be transformed into the likeness of God becoming "partakers of the divine nature" - 1 Peter 1:4.
It's not an easy read, but well worth the effort. It also contains some great advice on raising children and teenagers, with pointers on education and discipline.
You can access some of the writings of St. Theophan on the Internet. Just search for "St. Theophan" and you'll find excerpts from this book and others on Orthodox Christian websites. After that you'll want this book. It's a classic.
Noel.......2004-11-14
Here is the truth! St. Theophan clearly spells it all out step by step so that everyone can understand it. He doesn't leave you stranded at "join a church" level. He takes you all the way to Union With God. If you really want to know about the real Christianity, this is it. You will not find better.
Fortunate.......2002-12-12
St. Theophan translated Philokalia and other works to Russian and had a vast correspondence during his 23 years as a recluse. Tha Path to Salvation is his main work in which he goes through the Christian life from cradle to grave; from birth to salvation.
The practical instructions in the book are many: starting from the beginning of the Christian life, on turning towards God and the union with Him. 'Staying within', prayer, the meaning of the 'mysteries and sacraments' are all gone through thoroughly and spelled out as the unceasing work in remembering God. The death of the tyrant, the enemy, satan, what we normally call self, is one step on the way.
Besides the instructions to the Christian life The Path to Salvation will give many clues to better understanding of the Patristic writings of Philokalia as well as to what is meant with concepts like the struggle, labour and work of the Christian life.
Church Father for modern times? Without a doubt!.......2000-09-13
What does it mean to call a spiritual writer a "Church Father for modern times"? For some, it might be easy hyperbole, or hype without depth. But for someone like Staretz Theophan's translator, Fr. Seraphim Rose, who dedicated his entire all-too-short life until his death in 1982 to the acquisition of the "mind of the Fathers" through a life of prayer and spiritual effort, and who was not apt to overpraise anyone born after the fall of Constantinople, this is praise you can trust. It brings together the two areas that were at loggerheads in his soul, which are also the two forces all spiritual seekers must struggle today to reconcile: modern life and authentic spirituality. The key question, which must become a life-and-death issue for anyone wishing to make genuine spiritual progress is: how is it possible to live an authentic spiritual life in this world of sham and selfishness, desire and deceit, pleasure and pain, joy and sorrow, emptiness and hope?
The Path to Salvation answers that question, and in a manner so thorough, complete, effective and simple as to be almost beyond expectation. Theophan the Recluse was indeed a Church Father for modern times. He lived in the latter half of the 19th century when all the elements of modern life--rationalism, pluralism, secularism, humanism, etc.--were gathering their all-consuming force; he lived a life totally steeped in prayer and spiritual practice based on the centuries-old spiritual tradition of the Philokalia and the hesychasts of Orthodoxy; and--and this is especially important--he had a ministry of spiritual direction to thousands of people throughout Russia and the world, most of whom were not monks and recluses but men and women living in the world. The result was a way of teaching that took the reality of the Gospel of Christ, and the truths of the Epistles of Paul, as illumined by the insights of a Maximus the Confessor or Isaac the Syrian and, without losing any of that power or brilliance, communicating their essence in a form accessible to the sensibilities of people born in modern times. This book is truly a treasure among books, hidden in plain sight in a field of works of so-called spirituality that are as weeds or stubble in comparison. Find this book. Dig into it. Savor it. Take it into your heart. You will not be disappointed
these are the true teachings of christ for true christians........1999-09-23
trust your heart , you will not be disappointed

Masters of the Mystical Rose has been meticulously researched and gathers together the scattered pieces of the puzzle of history to form a meaningful picture. These stunning insights reveal how the Masters have constantly assisted with the development of civilization and the destiny of mankind.
Customer Reviews:
A League of its own.......2006-02-23
I am a big fan of Maree's books, I started with her 2nd book 'The Dove, the Rose and the Sceptre' and have since discovered her first work, the 'Masters and the Mystical Rose'.
This book pieces together a thoroughly detailed overview of the the Grail Family and their origins (the Grail family as referenced in the Da vinci Code).
I thoroughly recommend this book for those who seek truth beyond the myths. This book provides answers to intriguing mysteries,(such as who the real Merlin and King Arthur were; who the real Shakespeare was; who the Essenes' Teacher of Righteousness was; the prominent role of the Father of the Family of the Holy Grail; how the names of Mary and Anna originated in the Holy Grail family; who the real Joseph of Arimathea was), and is in a league of its own.
It is obvious from the commencement of the book, that the author has spent many years researching and the honest approach in her writing is very refreshing.

Like all Morrell books, a good bit of action.......2006-03-04
Synopsis:
The book is set in the Cold War era in the world of big time spies. Two orphans living in an orphanage, Saul and Chris, were singled out for education and training that led to them being paired together as super spies working for the CIA. Now, the man who trained them - the man they consider to be their father - has betrayed them. Saul and Chris avoid all sorts of troubles as they unravel an international plot against them and combat the international forces arrayed against them.
My review:
Like in all of Morrell's books, there is plenty of well-written action and interesting characters. Plenty of thought went into this world of conspiracy. The action is detailed, but not overly so. It is not Morrell's best work, but it is certainly worth the read.
I give this one a solid 'B'.

Excellent Service, Terrific Book.......2007-04-02
I received my product quickly, in great condition and with no problems, which is all that I wanted from my business transaction.
A gothic feel to it.......2006-09-21
From the first chapter I was drawn in and I couldn't put the book down. This was a well written, quick paced book with a different spin on vampires/shapeshifters. I don't know if anyone else felt it, but the story had a gothic feel to it. The H/H were quite good and if you enjoy hot and steamy sex scenes than you will definitely enjoy this book.
Review of Hunting Midnight.......2006-01-31
Emma Holly weaves a wonderful storyline with memorable characters and steamy lovescenes into a delightful read. I recommend this book highly. When you add the other two books it makes for a delightful and entertaining event you will enjoy very much!
eh.......2005-10-11
Honestly, I've had the book for over a month and i keep trying to get into it - NOT HAPPENING. I had read other books by Holly and I love the paranormal romances. However, this held nothing in it for me. Try her erotica for a good read. For paranormal - read Sherrilyn Kenyon!
Wonderful.......2005-07-07
I really enjoyed this book. If you like a book that is different from the others I would recommend this to you.

The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon comes a novel of incomparable scope and beauty that takes the reader on an epic journey from war-ravaged nineteenth-century Europe to antebellum America. Hunting Midnight
At the dawn of the nineteenth century in Portugal, John Zarco Stewart is an impish child of hotheaded emotions and playful inquisitiveness, the unwitting inheritor of a faith shrouded in three hundred years of secrecy--for the Jews of the Iberian Peninsula have been in hiding since the Inquisition. But a season of loss and bitter discovery brings his innocence to an abrupt end. Hunting Midnight........2005-07-20
I cannot write a review as I bought the book for a gift for my 99 year old uncle for his birthday.
A Great Read of Almost-Epic Proportions.......2003-09-11
Richard Zimler's second novel, Hunting Midnight, casts as its central character a descendant of the title character in his first novel, The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon. The new work is set in Porto, Portugal, in the early 19th century, 300 years after the first novel.
Because it contains a wide range of ingredients - a South African Bushman, a Scottish winegrower in Portugal, South Carolina slaves, child abuse, characters' artistic pursuits, Beethoven, reverence for nature - it is perhaps more universal in its appeal than the first book.
But it also has its Jewish (and Kulanu) components, such as the narrator's discovery that he is descended from Jews, and the occurrence of an anti-Jewish pogrom in Porto.
The author writes skillfully as the voice of the young Scottish-Portuguese half-Jew as well as that of a slave girl in the American South. He also imparts a seemingly deep knowledge of Bushman belief and culture, in addition to snatches of Portuguese and Hebrew, and departures into Jewish philosophy and Scottish song and literature. The story-telling style is tight, with straightforward prose that builds up tension and suspense effectively.
These disparate elements might seem a bit too much, but it all works well together, and Hunting Midnight is a great read of almost-epic proportions. While The Last Kabbalist was also a mesmerizing, suspenseful experience, it was more parochial. The first novel was a best-seller in Portugal and did well internationally. The second novel, being truly universal, may well do even better.
Delightful, wise, and elegant.......2003-07-04
Zimler's book is a triumph of modern fiction: an absolutely gripping narrative of love and loss set against a backdrop of fantastic historic drama. Zimler rises to the incredible quality of his bestselling The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon. The characters are rich and fully realized, and their conflicts are vital and real. They grow throughout the book, so that by the end you feel a real intimacy with them. The period setting is elegantly realized; you feel as though you are living in these far-away times, going to the bird market, observing the early forms of racism, encountering the ravages of the Inquisition. This is a story of family too, and the close bonds of the central characters are extremely vivid. I loved this book. Read it at once.

A MASTERPIECE.......2003-07-03
As an avid reader who has been ritually disappointed by the so-called "literary" sensations of the past year, it is a true joy to find a book with a heart and soul, written by an author at the top of his game. This mesmerizing, beautifully written tale of the friendship between a freed African slave and a bereaved child will make you weep on every page, such is the realism of emotion Zimler packs into each page. He is distinctly not an author given to mawkish sentimentality. This is the unputdownable book of the year that thoroughly deserves a wider audience. It is, as the flap copy suggests, an out-and-out masterpiece.
