4 out of 5 stars A Tender Coming-of-Age Story.......2007-09-30

Fifteen-year-old DeVeaux is faced with choices and changes when her father, a formerly affluent and respected Charleston resident, goes bankrupt and moves the family to a much more isolated and much less refined life an on island nearby. DeVeaux, the youngest of the family, deals with her father's breakdown, her mother's illness, and her older siblings' and cousin's troubles, as well as her own relationship and friendship intricacies.

The story is understated, peaceful, intimate. You feel as though you're sitting on the front porch swing with DeVeaux as she relates the saga of the past six months to you. It avoids cliches without being overly cynical. And in my opinion, it is more well-written than many other contemporary Christian novels.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2007-05-20

The writing is strong, but I felt the story was a bit too contrived and predictable. The setting and dialog are pretty strong, and the plot itself has a good premise. I did believe the narration was nicely done, but the book as a whole just didn't grab me. I didn't really get pulled in and found myself skipping many pages. I basically read it in about 2 hours and nothing in the book made me stop and re-read due its sheer beauty. It is one of the better Christian fiction books I've read. I hope the Christian market continues to opt for substance and good writing. Grace at Low Tide has a nice flow, just didn't really move me.

5 out of 5 stars new literary voice.......2006-12-10

I love this book. It has now become one of my favorite books.
Devaux Deloach, though wise beyond her years, is a strong character and reminiscent of a character straight out of a Pat Conroy novel. I love the language of the low-country and the descriptions that place the reader right in the pages. This is a novel that sweeps along and never drags. Perfect pitch and poetic. A book to be cherished along with all contemporary Southern lit.

This book has depth and is one of those to be savored. Read it
slowly to take in the lush southern setting and experience the
pains of a young girl growing up in a family situation that forces her to be wise beyond her years.

5 out of 5 stars Further proof that God has not given up on the Christian publishing industry.......2005-08-04

The first thing you should know about GRACE AT LOW TIDE is that it's a work of literary fiction. The second thing you should know is that it's a work of Christian literary fiction. And the third thing you should know is that it's a work that offers further proof that God has not given up on the Christian publishing industry.

In case I haven't made myself clear, let me do so now: I loved GRACE AT LOW TIDE.

The story is told from the perspective of DeVeaux DeLoach, a teenager whose father, Billy, has suffered one business failure too many. His latest debacle has forced the family to move from their fine home in Charleston to a caretaker's cottage on the grounds of Rose Hill Plantation, which used to be the family plantation. From their new home in the South Carolina low country, the family has a clear view of a multi-million dollar development rising on a nearby island --- the very project that did Billy's business in and sent the family packing for poorer quarters.

If you've ever known a bona fide member of pretentious Southern gentility, the name DeVeaux DeLoach just has to make you chuckle inside. Who else would couple the name DeVeaux with DeLoach but an aristocratic wannabe? And one of those wannabes is named Billy! Oh my. I guess you can take the aristocrat out of the Southerner, but you just can't take the Southerner out of the aristocrat. I love it.

DeVeaux, who has been forced to leave prep school to attend the local high school, now spends her free time waiting tables rather than focusing on those accomplishments that will impress university admissions departments. As the story unfolds, she serves as a highly attached observer as she and her family try to adjust to their deteriorating circumstances. Billy's way of "adjusting," however, involves throwing temper tantrums --- even less attractive for an adult than for a two-year-old --- berating DeVeaux, mocking her mother, and treating those things that the two women love as if it was yesterday's garbage. Which is exactly what some of those things become.

Now to the factors that make this a distinctly Christian novel and why I hope other Christian authors and publishers will sit up and take notice of what the author has done here. DeVeaux's faith is evident throughout the book, in what she says, how she thinks, and what she does, such as attend youth group meetings in Charleston despite the difficulty she sometimes has in getting there. (An aside: There's a brand-new car she could use, but Billy refuses to let anyone, including himself, drive it. The car was a gift, and his pride can't handle that.) What sets Beth Webb Hart apart from many other evangelical authors is her subtle and graceful handling of DeVeaux's faith. There's never the slightest hint of preachiness in this faith-rich story.

Orbiting the DeLoaches' lives are a number of well-drawn characters, like DeVeaux's Cousin Eli, who helps her retain her sanity; the Shuzuki family, who bought Rose Hill and are in the process of renovating it; Maum Bess, Billy's childhood nanny, and her son Chambers, who live nearby; Bethany, the youth group leader; C.C., with whom DeVeaux has her first official date; and several other human characters. But among the leading characters in GRACE AT LOW TIDE is the South Carolina low country, which serves as far more than simply a backdrop to the story.

Hart, the author of this debut novel, is a creative writing teacher and my nominee for Writing Teacher of the Year. I don't know if she teaches at writers' conferences, but I certainly hope so. In fact, I think some of our bestselling Christian novelists ought to be forced to spend a week under her mentorship. This woman is so talented that I'm ready to travel to Charleston so I can take in a few sessions with her.

5 out of 5 stars Great Use of Language.......2007-08-25

This book is what inspired me as a child to want to read more, write poetry, fiction, and plays, enjoy the sound of language and become a linguist as an adult. Mahy uses language phenomenally well to paint a picture the child really grasps. What Charlotte Mason would call "a Living Book."

    5 out of 5 stars Seismological Singularity!.......2004-06-25

A beautiful wonderful book of my youth. You may remember author Margaret Mahy from her fabulous young adult novels like, "The Changeover" or "The Haunting". You may remember illustrator Brian Froud from Terry Jones's delightfully twisted, "Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book". Back in 1975, these two artists in their fields worked together to create a book accomplished the mighty task of appearing sweet without being horribly precious. "Ultra-Violet Catastrophe!" (a term that, within context, actually makes a lot of sense) is about Sally. Preferring to spend her days in trees as Horrible Stumper the tree pirate, Sally is forced to clean up and accompany her mother to Aunt Anne Pringle's house. The idea does not appeal to Sally, especially since Aunt Anne is very fond of all things neat and tidy, including little girls. It is fortunate, therefore, that when Sally arrives she finds that staying with Aunt Anne is none other than Great Uncle Magnus Pringle. The two are told to go for a walk, and while doing so find that they have a lot in common. Great-Uncle Magnus is a fan of burrowing into hedges, wading through muddy ponds, singing great silly songs, and building dams in streams. While out and about the two bond over the man's favorite phrases including, "Ultra-Violet Catastrophe" (a response one has to being treated like a potted plant) and "Seismological Singularity". After being chased by a mere cow (quoth Sally, "A cow with a calf isn't as mere as other cows, I don't think") and escaping over a barbed wire fence the two are, needless to say, a tad dirty/ripped to shreds/mud streaked. They are placed on some newspapers to dry off and soon the two bid one another a fond farewell. Great-Uncle Magnus invites Sally and her mother to visit him at the sea where he lives. The final shot is of the large man waving goodbye, his trousers ripped in the most embarrassing of places.

There's a wonderful tone and feel to this story. Anyone looking for a lovely intergenerational tale about being yourself would do well to give this book a look-see. And Mahy has such a fabulous way of describing things. Some of the phrases that have stayed with me over the years include the sentence, "Her hair was brushed until it shone and her ears went all red and hot", and, "His voice was loud - loud but not crackly. It was rather like guns at sea". The accompanying illustrations by Brian Froud are wonderfully evocative. The first shot of Sally shows her sitting on a tree branch, ankles crossed and her big thick head of hair surrounding her as she scowls. The more you look at Sally the more sense it makes that this illustrator would later go on to create books of squashed fairies. The country in which this takes place is never named, and you can't help but love seeing the fields, trees, rocks, and streams where the two wayward travelers do their exploring.

Of all the forgotten and out-of-print picture books out there, this has to be one of the greatest. A truly wonderful forgotten treasure, it deserves to be republished and brought to the attention of millions of children once more. If you find yourself lucky enough to own a copy, read it to the little ones you know every single day. It'll do you both quite a lot of good.

I love this book! It was one of the first ones that I ever remeber looking at with my mother and that I ever read! I have an Uncle like Uncle Magnus, and when I was little, it used to make me laugh at how much he was like MY uncle! Now, all grown up, I think that this book is one of the cutest stories ever written and it charms me all over again every time that I read it.

I love this book! The story captures the imagination and endears the reader to Sally, the "Tree Pirate" tomboy, and the devilishly mishevious Great-Uncle Magnus. The illustrations have a dream-like quality. As a child (and now as a thirty year old!), I could read this book over and over again and never get tired of it!

    Book Description

This book takes a broad look at the hobby of mineral fluorescence. It offers discussions of the major fluorescent minerals and mineral groups, techniques for collection them either on field trips or through trade and purchase, and the many ways fluorescent minerals can be displayed and enjoyed in the home. Fluorescent minerals present a puzzle. Many are of quite ordinary appearance in daylight, but when placed under the invisible rays of an ultraviolet lamp in a darkened room, they suddenly glow in beautiful colors. The transformation is so marked and so mysteriously compelling that many people instantly wish to learn more about it. This book provides information on the nature of ultraviolet light, how it causes fluorescence in a wide range of minerals, and how hobbyists can extract years of pleasure learning about them.

5 out of 5 stars highly original and sad.......2006-01-30

This is a most wonderful novel: the author based her story on the few remaining fragments of a medieval ballad and builds a complete novel out of her imagination and competence about medieval England.

The only flaw I see in it is the use of ancient spellings to render the texts written by the characters: a most unnecessary display of erudition.

A woman wronged, an immature but kind young king, an evil sorceress: all these classical ingredients are mixed into a story which mightily differs from a classical fantasy plot.

The evil sorceress, who of course is beautiful and pityless, has her good reasons to be such a villain: not that Ms Sherman justify her conduct but she gives us reasons to understand it and even to pity her.

The young king is courageous and good natured but he was thrown too early into his responsabilities and through a painful coming of age he has to become wiser and stronger to cope with them; to become a real king he also has to give up his personal hopes of happiness and this, if believable, is nonetheless very hard to stomach.

The wronged woman has a strong personality; she can tell right from wrong and act accordingly, but she is not likeable. Even before the evil sorceress wronged her by killing her family and her hopes for a happy life she was hard, determined, even cold. We have to take sides with her without liking her.

This is perhaps the reason why an extremely well written novel is so hard to like: the orderly world of fantasy, where black is black and white spotlessly so takes unpleasant shades of grey, different from the usual device of the main hero being a former thief or rascal.

I was not able to hate the sorceress, who I looked upon as a wild animal fighting bloodily for her survival; I looked with kind of disgust upon the rise of the woman up the hierarchy of the king's court, at her gaining the king's love without being able to love him at least a little in return.

Ms Sherman has chosen the stony path to a good story: the result is bitter but the quality of her writing and the development of her characters are such as not to allow any rating below the five stars.

The sexual gender issue and the homosexuality of the king have delivered this valuable novel to a minor queer fiction publisher... A shame such a book is not distributed worldwide as it deserves.

    5 out of 5 stars A delightful gem of a book.......2002-11-12

I was unfamiliar with the ballad on which this book is based, so the unfolding story herein was a complete surprise to me. I absolutely adored this book. The prose is lovely and the story is bittersweet. The tale of a young woman who discuises herself as a man and serves a handsome lord who falls for her--in her male guise, much to her distress. Classy and destined to be a classic. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A bittersweet gem of fantasy.......2002-08-13

This is the sort of book that deserves a wider audience than it's gotten so far. The author is a lesbian, and the book contains a gay character. Since mainstream publishers are still a little squeamish about such things, this book gets the label "Queer Fantasy" slapped on it, gets published by a small press, and the upshot of it is that most straight readers have never heard of the darn thing. And that's a shame. This isn't just a good "gay book", it's a good book.

_Through a Brazen Mirror_ fleshes out the ballad "The Famous Flower of Serving-Men". It is compelling from the first few pages, wherein a young man stumbles into the King's kitchens during a rainstorm. He announces he's looking for a job, proclaims his robust health, and promptly faints. But the young man, William Flower, is more than he seems; his quiet diligence causes him to rise quickly through the ranks of the castle servants, until eventually he comes to the attention of the handsome young King, who is questioning his sexuality. Meanwhile, in a mysterious tower in the woods, a sorceress has foreseen that her daughter will cause her death. Since the rules of magic forbid killing one's own blood, the sorceress instead tries to destroy everything around her daughter, releasing plagues and storms upon the land. I'll warn you right now, don't expect a "fairy-tale" happy ending; Sherman's ending is sadder but much truer to life than the ballad's original ending. But she leaves one major plot point open to imagination, softening the tragedy a bit. And everyone is a little wiser at the end.

Delia Sherman writes in a lovely style of prose, atmospheric and somewhat archaic, reminding me of the early books of Patricia McKillip, before her work became more abstract. The magic in Sherman's world is not cheesy D-and-D stuff; it's the very sort of magic that medieval people actually believed in. And through it all, even though it's a sad story, Sherman weaves a delightful ribbon of dry humor. I very much enjoyed this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good, with some flaws.......2002-01-22

I enjoyed this book because of the author's pagan themes. Christianity and the Old Religion of the area seem to rub together well enough. While there is an evil sorceress, Margaret, who is trying to indirectly kill her daughter, Elinor, witchcraft has its positive side in that the people of Albian relied on their hedgewitches to scry the future and cure their ills.

Elinor, who disguises herself as a man in order to find employment in the King's kitchen, is an interesting figure. She is not a great warrior queen or lightning-fingered mage. She is a middle-aged woman just trying to survive after having everything taken from her. What Elinor lacks in humor or liveliness of spirit, Sherman suffuses her with discipline, focus, and total devotion to the tasks at hand. This makes for a rather grim character, but all the more compelling.

While I wished that the book could have been more "gay positive", the story would probably have rang less true. The young king is struggling to cope with his sexuality while, at the same time, trying to provide for the needs of his kingdom and subjects. His resolution at the end of the tale, while not the most satisfactory, is perhaps more "realistic" because of it.

    Recommended.

    2 out of 5 stars Through a Brazen Mirror.......2002-01-04

I had read some of Ms. Sherman's short fiction and enjoyed it a lot. Unfortunately, this novel disappointed.

The lengthily titled Through a Brazen Mirror: The Famous Flower of Servingmen is based on a ballad, and as such should have had a workable plot. Essentially, a sorceress is trying to kill her daughter because of a prophecy that the daughter will be her death, but she can't kill her directly because of the rules of magic. In her efforts to kill the daughter indirectly, she kills the daughter's family. The daughter dresses as a man and goes to join the king's household, where she rises to a high position. The king falls in love with him/her, of course. I found this basically solid plot to be expressed very slowly and without tension. Character motivations never really seemed strong. The essential tragedy of the story, the fact that the young king is in love with the man he thinks the daughter is, only comes in at the very end and isn't adequately supported throughout the novel. Margaret, the morally ambivalent sorceress, never convinced me somehow.

The novel is written in a self-consciously Renaissance style that sounds as if the author had worked RenFaire several too many times. It is fluent and correct, but to me it comes across as a little precious.

There's some originality here and some appealing scenes, but overall, I didn't find it to be something I would recommend.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful , Interesting Book.......2007-06-19

Ultra Violet's writing style is so pleasing.

I still have the 1988 hardcover.

She doesn't miss a speck of detail as she writes about her rebellious childhood in France as though she was eleven again.

Her descriptions of Andy Warhol and his crowd is very descriptive and well written. Although she may mention some of their flaws, she does so lovingly, appreciatively and sweetly.

She then details a problem in her health, which was miraculously cured without medical intervention and in this state of health she revisits her family in France, returning to a suspicious welcome by family members.

You've got to read it .maybe several times.

The photos are great too, and so are her summaries of what's happened to all of the Warhol crowd at the end of the book.

    Five stars isn't enough !

4 out of 5 stars Miss Dufresne Is TWISTED!!.......2002-07-25

I have re-read this book many times, & must admit that, even though I enjoyed it immensely, it must be approached as fiction. Ms. Violet (Real name, Isabelle Collin Dufresne) tells many stories, most of which are more than likely outrageously exaggerated, if not blatantly un-true. It's not that I think she intentionally lied, I feel she truly believes all these events actually happened as she tells them. And that can be entertaining, in a ditzy kind of way... the facts be [ignored]! Truth may be stranger than fiction, but embellishment sometimes reveals more, if you read between the lines. And, with all the drugs and round the clock lifestyle that Ultra and the Gang lived, it's not surprising that her brain got a little damp in the process. While her fame barely lasted 15 minutes, she is a good example of Warhols "Superstars", all of whom had little if any talent or experience, that not being their goal. Instant fame, with none of the work involved, was their goal. And their movies, while being a mesmerizing document of those personalities and that time, in and of themselves are perfectly awful. Her book also has the undercurrent of sour -grapes resentment that I almost always detect in books about those associated with Warhol. All this aside, I still found this interestingly styled book an informative and fun read of that crazy time with Andy and his caravan of misfits, each of whom vied for that fifteen minutes.

3 out of 5 stars her 15 minutes are over a long time ago.................2002-01-28

Even though I did read the disclaimer at the beginning of the book stating: all conversations are reconstructed and are not intended, nor shall they be construed, as verbatim quotes......I at times had a problem with Ultra Violets stories. Of course this is the type of book that we read inviting name dropping, at times though I do not know what to believe, such as the part that her and some friends were on the way to pick up Janis Joplin to attend a show and they found her dead in her room. This may be true however it seemed like the worst kind of name dropping ever......tacky, tacky, tacky. I think she was fortunate in meeting so many exciting people and I understand when you associate with great artists they at times give you paintings or sell paintings below dealer price..., but perhaps she should hold on to those memories and valuable pieces of art for a rainy day cause her 15 minutes seem to be over a long time ago.

5 out of 5 stars If you only knew the 'Super Star' Ultra..........2000-08-26

Thought the book was a terrrific read some 6 years ago after meeting Ultra and getting to know her personally. She will make a return to NYC in October 2000, about the same time that her book is being optioned for movie rights. I will guarantee that she will open up more for the movie script -- I just know it! Watch out world Ultra is back.

4 out of 5 stars Painkiller Jane- as an accountant ?.......2006-01-02

The plotting here is very similar to the recent SciFi movie adaptation of Painkiller Jane ( a comic book) where a normal woman is given superpowers by a mysterious group of wrong doers....she meets up with some mercs who have their own agenda and want to use her . In the process she falls for one of her new trainers and decides to join their cause. I liked the solid action and pacing, and I really liked that the hero and heroine actually seemed to develop feelings for each other- the romance is not sappy but it is present and builds convincingly over the book. The actual sex is passionate and not graphic- but true tension makes it work.

I would like to see some more Blaze style hot sex thrown in with the action in this series- James Bond novels thrive on it- seems to me it would work in these too. The Sherri Whitefeather Bombshell with the supernatural theme is the best so far in achieving this . Cindy Dees books do it as well- action plus intensity = perfection. This one is a great debut and I look forward to the further adventures of Ultra Violet.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of suspense.......2005-12-20

It's nice to be able to read about a strong gustsy female protagonist. Violet is a 'real' character with strengths and flaws. Someone the reader can empathize with. I very much look forward to Ms. Henderson's next books. She's definitely on my automatic pre-order list.

5 out of 5 stars ultraviolet all the way.......2005-12-08

I'm a male and don't usually read "romance" novels, but: wow!!! Ultraviolet blew me away. Action, suspense, intrigue; a great story/plot with well developed characters. I've been won over by this style of novel. It's exciting to see strong women as title characters. I am anxiously awaiting another installment. Definitely worth a read.

5 out of 5 stars Brimming with Action.......2005-11-20

Violet Marsh, who has gone out of her way to live the most ordinary life possible, wakes up one morning to find she's lost five days--and gained a few superpowers. The police think she's a nut, and she's beginning to think she is, too, when someone tries to kidnap her. She foils the kidnapper with the help of Natalie, an employee of Gideon Enterprises. And though she doesn't want to trust anyone, she has nowhere else to turn except to this shadowy "security" organization. At least the people there believe her. And they have proof that someone kidnapped her in the form of a video.

Gideon recruits Violet to help his team with a "mission"--to break into the headquarters of SynCor. She pretends to go along, but her real motive is to get possession of that video so the police will believe her. But gradually she comes to realize the mission, though highly dangerous and highly illegal, is the only way to go. Complicating her moral dilemmas is her attraction to Jackson, a macho team member who is as mysterious as he is sexy.

New author Ellen Henderson has created an innovative story brimming with action and a very believable and vulnerable kick-butt heroine. I rooted for Violet as she gradually came to realize she was not at ordinary, but extraordinary, and not just because of her physical powers. A fabulous addition to Silhouette's most innovative line.

4 out of 5 stars strange romantic suspense thriller .......2005-10-14

Five days have vanished from twenty-six years old Violet Marsh's life; she remembers nothing about the last 120 hours except she was not on a bender and cannot recall an alien abduction. Natalie Warner of Gideon Enterprises takes her to the boss Mal Gideon who explains that she was taken to a facility by agents of SynCor and he believes genetically enhanced.

Stranger than her apparent amnesia is that she is always starving regardless of how much she eats, can run faster than human she knows, and cuts heal before she could place a band aid on them or even baseball great Papa Bell can turn off a light. Gideon assigns hot Jackson Cooper to work with Vi to rescue an endangered child juts taken into that same secret lab facility.

ULTRA VIOLET is a strange romantic suspense thriller that grips the reader from the moment that Gideon explains to Vi that a mickey was probably slipped into her take-out tacos. Vi is a terrific heroine bewildered by what is going on and wondering why her. Her pairing with Jackson seems right as he adds a need to protect the superwoman, which leads to a romantic flavor to the mystery of what is going on. Fans will appreciate this fun tale while waiting for future Gideon Enterprises' capers.
