Upon examining a dead woman found in snowbound Central Park, Kay Scarpetta immediately recognizes the grisly work of Temple Gault, a bold and brilliant killer from her past. Now she must hunt down a psychopath whose string of horrible murders is leading inexorably to his ultimate prey: Scarpetta herself. Even with the help of the FBI, Scarpetta knows the endgame is hers alone to play -- and it will be played on Gault's home turf, the subway tunnels beneath New York City.

From the vault, it's Temple Gault.......2007-05-14
Book six of the Scarpetta tales
with no sign of a halt
Another of the sub-series
that features Temple Gault
A woman's naked in the snow
that fell on Central Park
The killer taunts the CME
by leaving his trademark
The killer kills and kills again
always one step ahead
He'll likely stop at nothing
until Kay Scarpetta's dead
A network has been compromised
Her office violated
Scarpetta has to sift the facts
to see how they're related
A hidden camera sheds some light
Upon this creepy case
The ending wraps up quickly
with a subterranean chase
This one's no triumph for the Doc
She comes across as weak
Her private life's just one big mess
and things are looking bleak
Characters drift in and out
but leave no great impression
although the author ties loose ends
she's guilty of digression
I liked the last part of the book
especially the twist
The middle's slightly boring
but it's worth it to persist
Rated: 3.5 stars

gripping.......2006-12-09
There's a crazy killer on the loose and the sicko loves the attention he is getting from Dr Kay Scarpetta. Scarpetta travels to New York City and Hilton Head Island in this thriller. The sicko also teases her with some visits to Richmond, and even uses her credit card. I found this to be an above average Patricia Cornwell book. Lots of action, lots of autopsy detail... very entertaining. The only part I found odd was the army connection.
Gault at Fault.......2006-07-07
Did you ever read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand? Few people have, because it's long and it's dull, something about Rand's philosophy of man against society seen through the eyes of John Gault.
Now Ayn Rand ends up in Inspector Penn's bookcase and Temple Gault ends up with a scalpel in his thigh, riding the rails, so to speak.
Usually, authors describe villains who we come to dislike. Cornwell's villain, this coke-snorting psychopath, ends up surrounded by all the forces known to man, in New York City anyway. The FBI, the city police, the transit police, you name it. I ended up rooting for the guy to escape, that's how repelled I was by Cornwell's climax, or was it an anti-climax? Was it nothing more than a severed femoral artery?
I did learn something from this book: the subways in New York are confusing and homeless people can sleep there. Oh, and I learned that computers have evolved a lot since this book was written.
So to sum up, I don't know which book was more boring, this one or Atlas Shrugged, but neither one is really worth reading, I'd say. Diximus.
Good but incomplete.......2006-02-09
"Cruel and Unusual" was my first Scarpetta book, and when I looked on the jacket of "From Potter's Field" and saw that it would deal with Temple Gault again, I decided to read it next, hoping to see this killer get what he deserves.
Most of this book was pretty engrossing, even though I did have some gripes. Kay's affair with Benton is disappointing to me since she seems to pride herself on "doing the right thing." Lucy was insufferable in this one. She was younger in "Cruel and Unusual" and I could overlook her idiosyncracies, but she's older now and needs to get a grip - she almost seems to resent or dislike Kay at times but then turns around and loves her again. Also, Lucy's genius IQ and role as an FBI computer program writer who busts crime with her keyboard are beyond corny.
The best part IMO was the scene in the morgue, as others have said. I don't think I would have been able to put the book down if a tornado had ripped through my house while I was reading that part!
It is difficult to believe that a crazy guy high on cocaine most of the time could always be one step ahead of the police and FBI, brutally murdering people right under their noses and getting away with it.
But then the worst came. The ending. Wham, bam, it's over, with Temple Gault's fate implied but none of the juicy details I was hungering for. There wasn't even a page break - one second we're in the subway tunnels of New York, the next we're flying over Potter's Field. Huh?
Very Dissapointing.......2006-01-15
From Potters Field is one Patricia Cornwell's worst book she has written. It's not the characters, nope. It's not the writing that is wrong. It's the story that makes the book disappointing.
Temple Gault has struck again. This time we know this for sure. Both the readers and Kay Scarpetta do. Someone from Lucy's past is also back. The problem with this book is that Gault is not a strong enough villain to carry this book. He is not scary or very threatening. It's not exiting. Partly because we never get into his head we are always inside Scarpetta's. Even if Cornwell did venture inside his head I'm not sure if it would be that exiting. For a killer on the loose plot its very weak, of coarse the forensics are very good and original. But for the most part a very disappointing Scarpetta novel.

Book Description
Veronica St. John is facing the challenge of a lifetime. The media consultant has two days to teach a rugged Navy SEAL to impersonate a European prince who has been targeted by terrorists. It's a tough assignment, but Veronica is sure she's up to the task -- until she actually meets Joe.
Despite his physical resemblance to the handsome prince, Lieutenant Joe Catalanofto is nothing like the stuffy aristocrat. Everything about the combat-hardened Navy SEAL -- from the arrogant gleam in his eyes and streetwise attitude to the New York accent -- says regular guy, not royalty. One conversation and Veronica knows nothing could turn this military man into nobility. Joe, on the other hand, is confident he's got what it takes to complete his duty.
But neither of them expects their assignment to include falling in love . . .
Customer Reviews:
Laughably Awful!.......2007-09-18
Prince Joe is a sorry rip off of Miss Congeniality (which, of course is a version of Pygmalion, as are many variants, but Prince Joe most closely copies Miss Congeniality), missing all the charm and wit of the original.
The "story" concerns a cowboy, no er I mean a cop, no it was a vampire, no, wait, I've got it, a SEAL. Well, it doesn't matter since the characters are all two dimensional cardboard cutouts as opposed to real people. So, Joe the SEAL has to impersonate a prince. The prince is an ugly fop, Joe is stunning manly man, yet they are identical, so it all works. So, since Joe is a SEAL, and therefore can do absolutely anything, he perfectly mimics the Prince. He even speaks every language necessary. Oh, and he can fix or blow up anything, and he can have any woman he wants, oh, and this is the really funny one, he can "fly anything from helicopters to the stealth bomber and probably the space shuttle if he had to." Seriously, she actually said that! I did a little math in my head and I figure that in order to get qualified on every flying machine out there Joe must be over 350 years old. Wait, maybe he is a vampire, not a SEAL?
Unfortunately, while this is all silly and easily pushed aside, it is highly insulting to pilots of all stripes to say that a typical SEAL can do everything they do and more. I could never play golf like Tiger Woods, but he could never play hockey like I do. Life just doesn't work that way.
So, Joe the whatever is originally from New York, except that part way through the book that becomes New Jersey. I know that people are always mixing those two up, just like Idaho and Iowa, but come on. I think a professional writer should be able to get her characters straight. Therein lies the problem, however. The plot, such as it is, boils down to two VERY INSECURE people who spend the entire novel going "he loves me, he loves me not, she loves me, she loves me not." So, there is no plot. Well, without plot and without characters, you have pages and pages or meaningless words signifying nothing. Aside from the two main characters, the supporting cast is a bunch of stock extras sent over from central casting.
One plus in this book. Unlike so many romance novels today, this isn't an excuse for porn. Rather than the standard graphic sex scene every 4-5 pages, this one refrains from sex and vulgarity until about 2/3 of the way through. Then the first sex scene actually had me laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes! After the second sex scene, they break up. It doesn't matter why, the formula dictates time for the breakup. Then, well, then Dexter in the Dark came out, and I put this trash down as fast as gravity would take it!
Fortunately, I have been saved from the remainder of Prince Joe by the ever reliable serial killer Dexter.
Neat concept but thoughts and actions ruined it for me........2007-05-25
I loved the two main characters and the storyline, but the book should have been about 1/2 of the length. The author filled the story with endless ruminations within the characters' minds. They both kept assuming the wrong things about the words the other said. CAUTION SPOILERS: For example, he asks her to marry him, she says no because they are from two different worlds. He thinks she means he is too low class for her, but what she really meant was she didn't want to live with the fear that his work as a Navy Seal would keep putting his life in danger. So, he leaves her thinking the wrong thing. A second example is at a social function, she comes up to him and asks him to dance. He says stay the hell away from me (because his role is to be a target for a shooter and he wants her safe, which she should know), but she walks away thinking he doesn't like her, which was false. There were additional wrong assumptions causing conflicts which ruined the book for me. Sexual content: mild.
Awesome SEAL debut.......2006-09-01
Due to his incredible likeness to a European royal, Navy SEAL Team Lead Joe Catalanotto is recruited to step in as the royal to foil an assassination attempt. Royal media consultant is Veronica "Sinjin" St. John is giving the dubious honor of transforming the rough neck into Prince Tedric, a man whom Joe loathes due to his culpability in the injury of one of his team members during a rescue operation in the Middle East.
The last think that Veronica expects is to fall for Joe and his sexy, wily ways. After a couple days cooped up together, she is finding that Joe is more of a prince that the man he is masquerading as. After several events, including a visit to a hospice where a dying girl wants to meet "a real prince," Joe is feeling the emotions of his situation two. Trying desperately not to fall for Ronnie, they both fail miserably, and fall passionately in love. But can Ronnie forget about the danger that he places himself in daily?
The first in the TDD SEAL Alpha Team series, it has one of Borckmann's sexiest and most humorous heroes ever. The chemistry between the two sizzles off the pages and you a get a real feel for the other SEAL team members - and cannot help but want to read more about each and every one of them.
Wish i had a Sailor/Prince Joe to call my own!.......2006-07-23
I read this book the first time 7 years back and left a lasting impression on me, that's why when i came across it again after so many years i felt compelled to buy it and read again. Oh Boy am i glad i bought it! Since last time i read it i have read many romance novels, many great one and many bad ones too. i thought i might not like it so much the second time around because of all the exposure i have got to romance novels since then but i was wrong. This book still made my heart race, made me smile at Joe's attempts to make Ronnie laugh and still made me sigh at that sparks of atraction flying between them.
Joe's character was just amazing, and most endearing was his insecurities. Here was a Navy SEAL,one of the toughest possible guys, and he was insecure about his upbringing and background. He felt Veronica would be ashamed to be seen with a guy like him. He was sooooo sweet. He was so cocky, stobborn and arrogant but he was scared of rejection from Veronica. Just goes to show how a person's outward appearence rarely show what is really inside them.
i can't find any more book of this series , i am still searching for them. i know i have to read all of them.
Wow!!!.......2005-11-10
Although this was my first Suz Brockmann, I see many more of her books in my future. I LOVED this book!!! I have since ordered several more in the series and I am impatiently waiting for their delivery!!! If you like your books HOT and action packed, I highly recomend this book. Joe is the perfect balance between sweet and tough, and Veronica is helpless to resist his charm. Brockmann will make you wish you were the heroine! My one regret is that I hadn't found her awsome books sooner. I have heard that the rest of the series is just as good, so I am looking forward to many happy reading days.
Customer Reviews:
I liked it but there was too much business talk........1998-02-13
There were alot of interesting facts about Disney and how it was given new life by Eisner and his team. However, this book spent too much time talking about the business deals of the Walt Disney Company. The author should have spent more time on what was done rather than how it was done. I hope the author considers writing a revision of this book so that it will be more up-to-date. Anyway, it was alot of fun to read, so thumbs up!
A fun summary of how the Disney empire moved into the 90's........1997-01-19
A very interesting and entertaining perspective of how the Disney company made its transition into the 90's after having spent almost 15 years trying to recover from, and find it's way after, the loss of both Walt and Roy Disney. This book picks up where others leave off, several years after Walt Disney's death. Subjects include: changes and personalities involved in the struggle to carry the company with only Roy Disney Sr. to lead it; The search for new management in the wake of a terrible downturn in success; The struggle for directive and creative control in the company that almost resulted in all immediate Disney family members leaving the company; Several attempted leveraged buyouts; and the search for the new CEO that would save the Disney dynasty. All of which resulted in the selection of Michael Eisner as the new leader at Disney. The second half of the book takes the reader on an enjoyable romp as Eisner and his new team "brush the dust off" many of Disney's hidden treasures, re-releasing tens of Disney classics in theatres and onto video. The story also tells of how Eisner and his team add their own mix of movie, TV, music and animation creations to move Disney into the 90's. This is a great read for anyone interested in the world of the Disney empire, although I recommend reading at least one other book that focuses in the earlier Disney years for a better taste of just how things did change

This is the second installment of Nigel Tranter's trilogy detailing the struggles for the House of Stewart, in Scotland. With a weak, dying king, there is a lot of political strife. The point of view character is a young man of limited means, also named James.
Not as wet behind the ears here, it shows the problems he has trying to be an honorable man and do the right thing.
