Book Description
Under the summer sky, anything is possible....
Author of the acclaimed novels
Cloud Nine and
Follow the Stars Home, Luanne Rice returns with another moving portrait of a family in crisis -- as three sisters come face-to-face with the past and find in each other the courage to go on.
Coolly sophisticated and steadfastly single, Caroline Renwick has always been the sister everyone could count on. As she and Clea and Skye gathered at Firefly Hill, their childhood home, Caroline thought that they had all put the past behind them. But as summer gets under way, a mysterious man arrives -- a man who has the power to bring it all back....
Joe Connor was only six when his father died at Firefly Hill. Though he and Caroline had never met, the five-year-old girl reached out to him. They became pen pals and friends, until a teenaged Joe finally learned the truth about what had happened to his father that night. Now, after years of silence, Joe is suddenly here ... and Caroline still feels a connection. But she can't help but wonder if this handsome man holds the key to her family's healing -- or its destruction. And in his presence, how long will she be able to guard her heart?

Freaky!.......2005-07-07
My name IS Caroline Renwick - I also have a brother called Marc! Renwick is a very unusual name outside the Scottish Borders. If Luanne Rice is reading this (!), why did you choose the name Renwick?
Not What I Expected.......2005-03-17
If you'd asked me, before Firefly Beach, I would have told you I'm an unequivocal Luanne Rice fan. I've particularly liked her beach books and the way characters from one pop up on the fringes of another. I guess that's what I was expecting here...one of her beach books. And...while it DID take place by the shore...and featured the Renwicks...the book, the characters, the story...they just never grabbed me. I really didn't care what happened to anyone. In fact, I found the whole group of characters just frustrating, and never even finished this book. Other Rice novels...Dance With Me, Beach Girls, The Perfect Summer...have kept me up all night to finish them...but this one quickly found its way, half- read, into the "drop off at the club" pile. However...that won't stop me from reading the next Rice novel on my list...True Blue...or from looking forward to Summer of Roses. Given her talent, and the enjoyment she's given me over the years, I guess I'll just have to give Luanne Rice a "bye" on this one.
Good In Spite of Itself.......2003-08-20
Describing the plot of this book, it's hard not to be sarcastic. The coincidences rival some of the plots of Unsolved Mysteries. Nothing happens only once. Caroline watches two strangers die of gunshot wounds in two unrelated incidents 10 years apart. Later, two characters get the exact same injury on the exact same day, also in unrelated incidents. What are the chances? And don't get me started on the chichihua/rat mixup story. Urban mythologists say it never really happened, but it does here.
Still, despite the credibility-straining plot, the book eventually won me over. Luanne Rice is a good writer, and the characters were, for the most part, three dimensional and likable. Their actions were usually well-motivated--no one was an alcoholic or a neglectful mother without explanation. There was a bit too much symbolism given to little objects (snake bones, black pearls, etc.) and Rice should never try to write in the voice of a child--the letters between two young characters and a young girl's diary did not ring true. But in the end, I was really hoping for a happy ending for this family, which means that overall, the book worked for me.
Never disappointed.......2003-03-08
I haven't been disappointed yet by any of Luanne Rice's books. Firefly Beach is no exception. Great story, great characters, great ending....
Wish I read this one first!.......2002-12-09
In the past two years I've become a big Luanne Rice fan. Each of her books has bylines connecting it to another of her books. "Firefly Beach" ties in the charactes from the her others books, namely "Safe Harbor", "Follow the Stars Home" and "True Blue".
"Firefly Beach" sets the background information for the rest of the books she's written. It explores the life of the Renwicks, who are the focal point of Hubbard's Point and mentioned in the other stories. I actually think I enjoyed this book the most, as it most closely resembles my (lack of) love life!
This is classic Luanne; it will make you angry, happy and cry.

Product Description
Luanne Rice, like Anne Rivers Siddons, has an uncanny ability to convey a familys sweetest joys and its darkest secrets. Firefly Beach is a poignant story of two people struggling to move beyond the tragedy that links their lives. As a child, Caroline Renwick watches, horrified, while a desperate man kills himself. After she learns that the man has a young son, Joe, Caroline begins writing to him, and they become close pen pals. But several years later, when Joe is told the reason for his fathers death, he turns away from her. Now, meeting as adults at Carolines ancestral home, they have a chance to confront and heal that old wound. But what will be the emotional cost? Set on the picturesque New England coast, Firefly Beach captures the magic of a summer that changes a woman and her family forever. Narrator Alexandra OKarma infuses this novel with a special glow, enhancing each fateful mood and moment.

Rad Radclyffe.......2007-10-10
I do not know if Radclyffe can get better than this series. Here we meet Rebecca and Catherine. And so opposite from each other it is just wow. In the midst of getting to get to knowing one another and serial rapist is putting the pressure on both of them professionally. How does it end? With a pretty good edge of seat scenerio. Good stuff!!
Cops and Docs... Typical, Wonderful Radclyffe.......2006-06-02
It's no secret to anyone who has read my reviews that Radclyffe is my favorite author. That doesn't mean she automatically rates a 5, but it's certainly deserved here.
Detective Sergeant Rebecca Frye, a tall, blonde, blue-eyed cop, is investigating a series of sexual assaults on prostitutes. In her investigation, she meets Doctor Catherine Rawlings, a psychiatrist who specializes in women, lesbians, and sexual abuse. Rebecca doesn't believe herself worthy of another woman's love because, as a cop, she lives for her job. Catherine finds Rebecca special, but has difficulties accepting her profession.
Things are especially tense when Catherine is placed directly in the hands of the murderer Rebecca is trying to capture. The only question is whether either woman can listen to her heart instead of her head.
Fantastic start to a great series.
A Good Romance But a Better Mystery.......2006-04-19
The gist of this novel is as described elsewhere.
This is an excellent mystery - full of twists and turns and full of suspense. A real page turner. Added to the mystery is the tension between the two main characters, Detective Rebecca Frye and psychiatrist Catherine Rawlings - well done and maintained throughout the book.
There is also romance. Radclyffe continues to develop the romance between the two women from the first meeting through the end of the book. However, one disappointment is the love scenes - terse and, well, too clinical. If you want better written love scenes, try reading Gerri Hill.
Be prepared to stay up well beyond your bedtime reading this novel. And you might as well put the second and third books in this series in your Amazon cart right now because you'll certainly want to read them too.
Full of Hot, Passionate..........2006-01-13
Shield of Justice by Radclyffe is the first book in the Justice series. Radclyffe is not shy about giving us what we want. This book is full of hot, passionate sex intermingled with a serial rapist investigation. Detective Sergeant Rebecca Frye is in hot pursuit of the rapist, when she meets psychologist Catherine Rawlings. Rawlings is in a position to help in the investigation, but loyalty to her patient puts her at odds with Rebecca. There is an immediate attraction between the two and as they begin to explore their attraction, there are a few turns for the worse in the case and Catherine finds herself right in the middle of the investigation and in extreme danger. This puts Rebecca in a precarious situation, and tension builds as the story continues to develop.
Radclyffe develops a wonderful and insightful character in Dr. Rawlings who seems to be able to read Rebecca's inner feelings as well as her fears. Rebecca draws from her strength and finds comfort in just being with Catherine. It is a real touching bond they seem to develop over this short period of time. Because the book is the first in a series, Radclyffe allows for this relationship to first build as a physical relationship, hopefully giving time for the characters to grow more in future novels. This is a good recipe for writing a successful series. You have to give the reader something to come back for.
Radclyffe is also good at wrapping up major parts of the story but leaving a few dangling for the sequel. In this case, it's not sure if Catherine will be able to handle the fear of loving a police office and if Rebecca will be able to fully let Rebecca in. Also, we don't know what happened to Rebecca's partner. I guess we'll have to read In Pursuit of Justice to find out (book 2 in the series).
Mystery! Suspense!.......2004-12-02
Police Sergeant Rebecca Frye and Psychiatrist Dr. Catherine Rawlings, two women from completely different walks of life, are thrown together after another woman survives a brutal attack. The confidentiality of psychiatry and the fact finding of the police clash when the survivor is discovered to be a patient of the doctor's. Who attacked the woman? Was she a witness to a crime or did she inadvertently become a victim? Will there be others? How do you find out what you need to know without further traumatizing the patient and before another woman becomes a victim?
And, if things couldn't be any more complicated, entering in to the fray are feelings from each woman for the other. Should they act on them? Should they not? How do you balance job and personal time without feeling like you are being analyzed or interrogated? Working desperately on solving the clues, both women are faced with these questions? Also, how do you keep from becoming a victim yourself when the target falls on you?
Shield of Justice is a fantastic tribute of how both police and psychiatry constantly tread a fine line when dealing with life, drama, conflict and the ever-changing world of human emotions.

Useful for any superhero game, vital for SAS........2003-09-12
Shields of Justice isn't just another book on how to create superheroes in game terms; it's the best treatment I've read yet on how to create superheroes in all the ways that don't fit on a character sheet. If you follow the advice in this book, you'll know your character better than you know yourself.
Perhaps 33% of the book is specific to Silver Age Sentinels. This book would be valuable for any superhero campaign, no matter what system you use. It would be especially valuable for GMs running Champions or Blood of Heroes who feel their players are building character sheets, not characters.

The translation is too modern to be any good........1998-09-11
This book, following the modern trend towards "relating to the people" loses all overview of Menander. Upon reading this book, one does not ask himself the age-old question, "Does Menander imitate life, or does life imitate Menander?"

Customer Reviews:
Almost unreadable .......2005-08-28
This author could not have had an editor; this book reads like the product of a vanity press. I bought it despite what I now realize was a very accurate assessment by the previous reviewer, because I was doing research on the ATF. However, the insights into the workings of the ATF are drowned in the author's personal whining about his incompetent superiors and co-workers in addition to the very poor writing and structure. I have read several other books about the ATF. This is by far the weakest and least informative.
One of the most poorly written books I have ever read........2000-05-27
This might actually have been a very good book if the author had teamed up with a professional writer. Burgess gestures throughout his book at stories, issues, and viewpoints that would be interesting if clearly articulated, but the writing was so terrible and the narrative so unclear and disjointed that I found the book painful to read. It is regrettable that this is the only book available by a former ATF agent providing an inside view (such as it is) of the bureau. I must also add that the book is no longer current, and hence cannot address major changes in the ATF. This is not at all the author's fault, but it is something that should be taken into consideration for potential readers who are interested in the modern bureau.
Rotten.......1999-12-20
Obviously the poorly-written attempt by the author to smear the agency that didn't appreciate him while trying to convince the reader he was worth appreciating. Anyone who enjoys the labourious task of slogging through dreck will have fun wiuth this one
An poorly written account of a agent's fight against crime.......1999-05-16
In short, this book was terrible. The author wrote too much about things he should have left out and not enough about the reason why people buy this book-fighting crime as an ATF special agent. We learn about every minute conversation with every person he comes in contact with. And it is amazing how everyone speaks as if they are in a courtroom while chatting in a bar. We learn about his aching knees and buying groceries on the way home from work. Every minute detail is there, unfortunately, it does nothing for the story line. And by using a combination of the author's own words and "reading between the lines", a reader can easily see the hidden racist and misogynistic undertones in the book. The title of the book is very misleading. I thought this would be a history of the ATF, IMHO an excellent LE agency, as written by an insider. Instead, I was rewarded with a hamfisted autobiography that left much to be desired. Instead, I highly recommend "Very Special Agents" by James Moore (ISBN 0-671-57035-8) for those interested in a detailed and informative ATF history. To the author's credit, I will never deny the fact that this man dedicated his life to putting away some very dangerous people. I'm sure that he has a plethora of stories that need to be told. I just suggest that he get some help with writing his book the next time.
A very comprehensive look at a very controversial agency........1999-04-19
The book described in detail criminal investigations and the bureaucracy who supervises them. A person wanting to know details about how the agency works could read this book and be overwhelmed with facts and information about our criminal justice system.

From the supplier: Discrimination on the basis of race needs to be recognized in justice administration but removing the peremptory challenge is not the way to solve the problem. Peremptory challenges allow minority defendants to question the internal bigotry of the jury and try to gain a judgment by peers who will recognize the defendants as people.
