Book Description

Stone Barrington investigates the secrets of a CIA officer's suicide in this next thriller in the bestselling series.

Stuart Woods's newest bestseller, Dark Harbor, brings us the perfect mix of sexy intrigue and swift suspense that have earned him legions of fans over the years. In this latest thriller, Stone enters the picturesque town Dark Harbor off the coast of Maine, where the shocking deaths of three people have cast a long shadow over this island haven-a locale as mysterious as it is exclusive.

Stone Barrington hasn't heard from his cousin, Dick Stone, in years-though he has fond memories of a teenage summer spent at his house in Maine. Then, Lance Cabot of the CIA interrupts an otherwise pleasant meal at Elaine's with news of Dick's death-apparently by his own hands. It seems that Dick Stone, a quiet family man who doubled as a CIA agent, methodically executed his wife, daughter, and then himself-or did he? What would cause a loving father and husband to murder his family as they slept? Before his death, Dick had appointed Stone executor of his will, giving him full control of the disposition of a sizable family estate. Was Dick preparing for his suicide, or forewarning Stone of his murder?

With the help of his ex-partner, Dino, and his friend Holly Barker, Stone must settle the estate and piece together the elusive facts of his cousin's life and death as a CIA operative. At every step Stone knows he is being watched by Dick's family-and one of them just may be a killer.

2 out of 5 stars Frank and Josephine Hardy rush to the rescue!.......2007-09-06

(This refers to the book-on-tape version) About halfway through this I realized that the mystery wasn't going to have a great resolution and that several seemingly important details (a household appliance, a kidnapping, a murder here or there) were going to be kicked into the rough in the hopes that the reader would forget about them. I was reminded of the Hardy Boys novels I grew up reading, but they're really more tightly structured (although not as much sex) than this book. Getting into the motorboat and quietly going up the cove to the abandoned boathouse! Figuring out from the angle of the bullet that - gasp! - it wasn't a suicide! Hopping into a plane to chase the villains through the sky - to almost crash into them! Almost all action taking place off-camera!
When Woods wants to write about something he cares about (Hollywood and the movie biz, airplanes ... umm, anything else?) he can bang out a darn good tale (The Prince of Beverly Hills). Plots with more depth or intrigue seem to get away from him (thus requiring insertion, as it were, of fairly gratuitous sex scenes to distract the reader - not that there's anything wrong with that) and, with this one, there's a sense in which the reader is just asked to say "keep turning the page - at least some of these details will be 'splained by the end". A book for people who miss Nancy Drew, Frank and Joe and their chums ferreting out the truth while getting into scrapes and escaping peril almost every chapter!

4 out of 5 stars not bad..not bad at all.......2007-08-30

It's been a while since I've read anything but Stuart Woods, must less a Stone Barrington novel. It's nice to see that everything I enjoy about the Stone books was not missing from this one.

Overall I found the book pretty good, although I have to say that stone and his friends constantly walking into money (and the bedroom) does get a little annoying =)

It's Stone's uncanny knack of getting himself and the people closest to him in trouble that makes these books engaging reads. All the usual suspects are in this one: Stone, Dino, Holly Barker (I like how she's now crossed from her own series into the Barrington books), Lance, and a few others.

One thing I found annoying about the book was the way it ended. Woods is great at letting you think you figured out whodunnit only to pull the rug out from under you at the last minute, but a lack of explanation for certain crimes that took place in this book left me a little unsatisfied. I think if the book were another twenty or so pages, it would have been even better.

All in all, another solid addition to the Stone Barrington series of books. A fast and engaging read.

1 out of 5 stars Stone Barrington "light" .......2007-08-22

Having followed Stone through his past adventures this was a resounding disappointment !! Woods must have called this one in !!!!

4 out of 5 stars Dark Harbor.......2007-05-29

"Dark Harbor" is the 12th Stone Barrington novel by Stuart Woods. Barrington travels to Dark Harbor, and island off the Maine coast to execute the will of his first cousin, Dick Stone who had died along with his wife and daughter in what the police ruled as a murder-suicide. Barrington and his former NYPD partner believe that it is a triple murder by the position of the gun. They also learn that Dick was a high ranking CIA officer from Lance Cabot. They think it could be work related. There are 4 other murders and a kidnapping on the island. Stone, Dino, and the local policeman, Young, solve the murders. This is an entertaining murder mystery even though it is not Woods' best effort.

2 out of 5 stars What? Exactly!.......2007-03-30

This book gets two stars because I actually read the whole book. What a dumb plot. And what's with the characters? Everyone has a pilot's license in their back pocket, they all have 5 million dollars waiting for them somewhere, and a bunch of other seemingly disconnected coincidences, which is a lame attempt to resolve the ridiculous plot.

Woods, buddy, please for the love of God and all humanity, get some better names for your characters. Stone Barrington? And his grilfriend is named Arrington? Huh?

Stone Barrington is investigating a murder case about his cousin whose last name is Stone. How stupid is that? What a childish/amateur way of trying to make a plot twist.

The one bright spot in this book...never mind, there isn't one.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it. Highly recommend it........2007-07-16

Listened to the audio book and for the past 1.5 years, I've listened to one a week. And this one is at or near the top of my list. Very well done. Great characters and dialogue. Hard to put down. I'm looking forward to listening to Hosp's next book. Dark Harbor was excellent!!

4 out of 5 stars Over the top.......2007-02-14

When John Grisham introduced us to Bendini, Lambert & Locke, a Memphis tax boutique controlled by the Mafia, the idea of an in-house firm for the mob was hilarious. These days no one, least of all our hero Scott Finn, is particularly sure that organized crime doesn't just control the firm, but also the governor's office, the US Attorneys Office and the Boston PD.

Finn, who worked and fought his way out of the streets of Southie to the thick-pile carpets of Boston's Brahmin legal establishment, finds himself back among the thugs and characters of the world he thought he left behind. When a fellow associate and friend with benefits is killed by a copycat killer seeking to emulate "Little Jack" who was terrorizing the city Finn is drawn into the fray, where he acquits himself brilliantly while maintaining his place on the partnership track.

Finn even finds a new love interest in the cop who is trying, though not very hard, to put him away. And a childhood friend proves an invaluable ally as Finn attempts to clear himself and clean up the city in the process.

If it seems over the top, it is. But it is good fun too.

4 out of 5 stars Great new author.......2007-01-10

I was pleased to find a great new author when I read David Hosp's book The Betrayed. In my opinion Dark Harbor, his second book, wasn't quite as good, but definitely worth reading!

1 out of 5 stars Don't Quit Your Dayjob!.......2006-10-08

Maybe the worst "thriller" I've read in years. The dialogue, characters and plot are at best soap opera material and that's giving it a positive spin. I hope Mr. Hosp is a good lawyer....and we all know what Wm. Shakespeare said about that profession.

5 out of 5 stars Well written fun novel.......2006-10-04

Scott Finn is a highly successful attorney, soon to be made partner, in a high profile law firm. Linda Flaherty is a tough police lieutenant who has been assigned a serial killer case involving the deaths of several young women. A co-worker and ex-lover of Finn's is murdered and believed to be the victim of "Little Jack" until evidence points to Scott, who has a checkered past growing up an orphan on the streets of Charlestown. Soon Finn finds himself playing detective to bring closure to this murder so to save his career, sanity, and ultimately his life. The spectrum of lives from street toughs to high ranking government officials involved in corruption makes this book a fun fast paced read.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite S.E. Hinton book.......2007-08-28

this is my favorite S.E. Hinton book. i really dont understand some of the low ratings for this book. id recommend this to anyone. all of hinton's books have grabbed me till the very end, this book is no different and is very, very well written. Truly one of the best books i've read

3 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this.......2007-07-11

I knew that this book had been poorly reviewed when I bought it, but because I like both Hinton's YA novels and novels about vampires, I expected this book to by right up my alley. Unfortunatley, the characters in the book were universally unappealing. I just couldn't bring myself to care much about any of them. I was frankly relieved when I finished the book and could move on to something more interesting.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best, a great find........2007-05-28

Maybe I've lived a deprived childhood having never read a Hinton book before Hawkes Harbor, but I love this story. There is no predictablity as Jamie Sommers' life unfolds, then unravels. Jamie lives his life to the fullest but trusts the wrong people and is launched into heart wrenching situations often with no possible outcome but tragedy. Yet he perseveres thorough some of the most difficult of life situations, including horror no one would believe - even if he could speak of it. But by the end of his story, Jamie is a completely remade man with a rich life he so deserves.

It is this last glimpse of his life which moves me most; and though I know I will be emotionally wrenched once again, I find myself putting that first cassette in my player and willingly live it over again.

Ms. Hinton, thanks so much for this first foray into an adult story. It is one of the best I've found.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time.......2007-05-28

Hawkes Harbor was an uninspiring, bland, boring read with characters that did not connect nor inspire sympathy, empathy, or any other response. I thought the premise of the book sounded promising; however, I finished the book feeling empty and cheated for spending the time and effort to read this drivel. It was interesting to read many of the other reviews, especially the information that this was a Dark Shadows tie-in, or was meant to be. I have never watched that show, so maybe this book could have been a little better had I been familiar with Dark Shadows.

I cannot in good faith recommend this awful novel to anyone. I know that Ms. Hinton is rather popular. This was my first go at one of her books, so I will not base my overall impression/opinion of her writing style until I have tried one of her other works. As for Hawkes Harbor, I want my time invested back.

4 out of 5 stars Not dissapointed.......2007-05-13

This book is very well written like all of S.E. Hintons books are. It did take me a little time to accept the theme of the book because I was so used to how realistic her previous books were. S.E. Hinton is an amazing author and I would definently recommend this book

Book Description

When Ved Mehta was invited to Islesboro, a thirteen-mile-long island off the coast of Maine, he could not have imagined the far-reaching consequences of his visit. Seduced by the dream of setting roots in the New World, Mehta finds himself buying a fifteen-acre parcel of land in the rugged terrain of Dark Harbor. To build his house, he hires the architect Edward Larrabee Barnes, famous for designing, among other things, the IBM Building in New York. With echoes of Ibsen's Master-builder, Mehta details the folly of a blind man constructing a house on an island far removed from that other island, Manhattan, where he lives. Underlying this narrative is a richly allegorical tale about Mehta's own struggles as a writer and as a man. In the middle of it all, he falls in love with a much younger woman, whom he ultimately marries.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Travails and Tantrums of Building a (blind man's) House.......2004-03-15

Why should you read a book about building a house? Aren't millions of them built in the US every year? What's special about them?

Well, the author (who is building the house) is blind for one. Add to it the fact that, he couldn't afford it when he started building. And then he was building it on a remote island in Maine. If you thought that this is a recipe for disaster, you are correct. But he seems to persevere through the whole thing and builds a fabulous house in the end.

Two of the reviewers (I couldn't help notice both are from New England) seem to think that the book is about the beauty of Maine. And therefore conclude that the book is not a good book. So what is the book about? .. it is about a blind mans life, his aspirations and desperations; about how a house project always costs much more than is budgeted; about how a house is a never ending project; about architecture; and of course about the beauty of an island in Maine (but not just that).

All in all a very interesting read.

2 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2003-11-03

I found this book to be tedious and far too concerned with the parochial, and frankly dull, details of Mr. Mehta's feelings about having a house built on an island off the coast of Maine. Not enough about Maine. Too much about Mehta. Too bad.

5 out of 5 stars the man is interesting, not the house.......2003-10-18

Forget the other Great Autobiographies like Paustowsky and Proust. Ved Mehta and his Continents of exile is far better then anything in this field of writing. In very elegant, humorous English he gives you the story of his life, and the angle differs a bit each time. That counts for the disappointed readers that expect a book about The New Yorker or A House On A Maine Island. What you get is the fascinating story of a blind Indian man that grew up in India, came to America, went to England and back to America, and combines all these influences and continents with humor and an intelligent attitude.
A great series and another great book.

4 out of 5 stars "Dark Harbor" filled with insight and wit.......2003-08-28

I'm not sure what the reviewer from Marblehead's beef with Mehta's book is. It seems unfair to knock "Dark Harbor" just because it doesn't portray the stereotypical "Down East" Maine preciousness he or she holds as inviolate.

In fact, to think Mehta's book is or should be solely about rocky beaches and pine trees and lobster boats is missing the larger and much more subtle and poignant points this memoir seeks to make. I found it fascinating to read Mehta's account of building a dream home in spite of his blindness. Think of the central ironies at play here--a blind man obsessed with visual and spatial architectural details he cannot detect or enjoy the same way sighted people can, and yet driven to build a state-of-the-art home for the enjoyment of those around him. It is at once an act of tremendous generosity, considerable hubris, and deep-seated insecurity and sensitivity to the opinion and approval of others.

Mehta is not the first writer to describe his descent into a house-building money pit, but he is no doubt the first to describe the experience from this unique perspective. This material is rich with psychological complexity, as well as humor and wit, and Mehta invites us along on his bricks-and-mortar journey of self-discovery. If that trip takes us from Islesboro to Manhattan to his ancestral home in India, or from the isolation of his blindess to the social swirl of New York literati and high society, so much the better. Those intertwining worlds (the "Continents of Exile" after which he named his autobiographical series) only make for more fascinating reading. And his clear and lucid prose style--an elegant, charmingly antiquated type of writing one rarely finds published anymore--enhances the experience. There is much to enjoy and savor in this book.

2 out of 5 stars Quirky, Equivocal Man Builds Ugly House on Beautiful Island.......2003-08-11

Mr Mehta has a gift for writing much about nothing. To put it simply, the reader is left feeling like his psychotherapist.

Here is a man who's building a house on the coast of Maine yet wants the walls to be utterly soundproof--to lock out the slurping and crashing of the coastal waters. Sheetrock is a recurring demon that plagues his adult life. Throughout the book, Mr Mehta gives up and decides to sell off his investment. In fact, this theme is so frequent, you begin to wonder if he wrote the book to simply help market the house.

While the book holds some undoubtedly poignant memories for Mr Mehta; for the reader, it lacks any sense of coastal Maine. There is no feel of wind or fog; there is no smell of salty pine; and you certainly don't hear the crunch of sticks and rocks beneath your feet. You spend most of the book stifling in his New York apartment while he argues with himself, his architect, and his builder.

Book Description

Bring together a wonderfully varied mix of characters in a once-grand Maine island summer cottage, leave them to their own devices over the course of a long, idyllic summer in the late 1940s, and you have all the ingredients for a fine comedy of manners. Author Tom DeMarco starts with a simple little love story, weaves in tantalizing details of the old mansion's not totally respectable history, and adds a hint of gentle satire to create a novel that is touching, memorable, and deliciously entertaining.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A novel about a house(not haunted) with a past.......2001-10-18

Many novels are about people with a past, but in this case the main character is a house with a past. Not only has the house been the host of many unusual circumstances and characters, but it is also past its prime and has fallen into disrepair, although still heavily inhabited. While the past is regularly revisited, the main story is about a group of people who spent a summer at the house in the late 1940's. The story concludes with the young men and women pairing up for a sexual conclusion to the summer and engaging in a reenactment of the great zucchini war.
In between there are revelations of much of human behavior. The person closest to a main character is a man who calls himself Liam and is passing himself off as a fine arts student at Cornell University. His real name is Charles Liam Dwyer, and his change of name was an attempt to impress the others with his cultural sophistication. It also turns out that he is a student of animal husbandry rather than fine arts.
Dark Harbor House was built by the moneyed class before the turn of the century and there are many additional buildings on the estate. Through the years, the people engaged in many eccentric pursuits, such as model trains, unusual diets, religious revival, voyeurism and many hinted sexual escapades.
However, the titillating features are secondary to the characters and how they live out a summer vacation spent in their own version of fantasyland. The story moves along well, although with so many characters, it is at times difficult to keep all of them straight. While most of the characters are fictional, there are many instances of plot themes from other sources. There is a monsignor who claims to be able to use the new science of psychohistory to predict the future. Of course, this is from the Foundation series of science fiction books by Isaac Asimov. Furthermore, the predictions are all hopelessly wrong and it is clear that the monsignor is a muddle headed buffoon.
The most amusing point of the book is the description of the lack of rubber for elastic during the war. This led to the occasional, unfortunate event of the elastic of women's panties failing and causing them to drop at inopportune moments. The funniest part was when the reteller of the tale noted that when it happened, there always seemed to be a man nearby who would say, " well, we all must make sacrifices for the war effort."
This is not a novel with a powerful tale to relate. It is just a story about a group of typical, yet unusual people who summer together at an old house, sharing that part of their lives that they are willing to reveal. In that sense it works and I enjoyed it immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant, atmospheric, amusing.......2001-08-28

A charming summer idyll that re-creates the gracious era of great houses, wealthy eccentrics, langourous flirtations among the well-mannered guests. The authentic period details and likable characters make this a wonderful vacation book...or a book to help recapture that hedonistic vacation mood.

5 out of 5 stars It's just like a good dessert.......2000-12-04

Dark Harbor House is like a good dessert--delicious, satisfying and memorable. It is a combination drawing room comedy and coming of age story, set on a Maine island at the end of the 1940s, filled with genuinely funny, touching and believable characters, all of them keenly but gently observed, and written with care and verve. The book takes place in more innocent times than today, and yet there's plenty of delicious "hanky panky," as it was once called, and many other high jinks to smile at. It also features some intriguing background history involving, of all people, three turn-of-the century cereal kings, W. K. Kellogg, C.W. Post, and Dr. Ralston, as well as a pair of beautiful and eccentric female evangelists. If you feel the urge to escape the digital age for a few hours, I can think of no more felicitous way than to lose yourself in Dark Harbor House.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing but misconceptions and misunderstandings.......2007-07-07

Johanna Lindsey should have retitled WHEN LOVE AWAITS to MISCONCEPTIONS, MISUNDERSTANDINGS AND CONFUSIONS. Every romance novel plays out some misunderstanding or misconception between its hero and heroine, but this novel takes this plot device to new heights. WHEN LOVE AWAITS comprises of incessant bickering and one misunderstanding after another from page 1 to the very last. Johanna Lindsey is a bit more brutal in terms of violence than I'm used from romance authors, showing the heroine getting beat up by villains and almost raped. But brutal writing can be a good thing when it's fun, or when it's necessary to the overall plot, and/or when there's a suitable payoff towards the end. In this case, it isn't fun nor necessary, and there was no payoff at the end. Interestingly enough, even though we have beatings, mistresses and almost-rapes, the love scenes and passion in WHEN LOVE AWAITS are flat, Lindsey electing to take a lighter direction there. Again, the plot centers around misunderstandings while the prose is pretty bad, and the settings worst. I found the characterizations of both our hero and heroine equally invidious, not a single endearing trait between the two.

Another novel released in the mid-to-late 80s, it must have been fashion to have romance-novel heroes and heroines constantly fight over misunderstandings they refuse to talk about more openly. Ever wanted to scream your lungs out over an overblown misunderstanding that a simple talk could easily clear up? Well imagine screaming your lungs out over and over for 350+ pages because of it.

The idiocy of the hero and the callous, acrimonious nature of the heroine didn't help my enjoyment at all. Two things in this regard.

One, I don't understand how the hero Rolfe could allow his mistress to stay in the same home as the wife he professes to love. It really doesn't matter that the mistress misled Rolfe in believing she's carrying his child, he should have moved the mistress elsewhere. The point is, he's either stupid to believe a word the mistress spews at him and/or cruel to allow her to live in the same home as his beloved wife no matter the child situation.

Two, the heroine Leonie was way too cold throughout. Despite all the times Rolfe asks for her forgiveness and despite all the times he showers her with caring and kindness, she remains pretty stiff with him. The love scenes are equally cold if not moreso. Basically, they bicker and fight over and over and over during the day, go at it at night, and return to their bickering pattern during the day. She mistrusts his fighting ability during a tournament, drugs him so he's forced to avoid the tournament, then runs from his anger only to be captured by thieves and rapists. Towards the end, during a love scene, she thinks she can give everything to this man only to run from him the very next morning again. She believes everything Rolfe's former mistress tells her as well, and allows the mistress to take advantage of every situation. Instead of talking about it more openly with her husband or fighting with the mistress for him, she gives Rolfe a consistent cold shoulder.

          The Story.

King Henry II has granted Rolfe d'Ambert the rebellious estates at Kempston, spread out over 6 keeps and various rich lands. Before Rolfe can rule, he must conquer and bring the various keeps to heel. The keep at Crewel falls first and borders Lady Leonie at Pershwick. Leonie's father extricated her from his seat at Montwyn after her mother whom he loved dearly passes away. Although Leonie blames her father for her eviction, it's her stepmother who drugs and keeps her father too comatose to comprehend and rein in his second wife's perfidies.

Although she hasn't met Rolfe, Leonie believes Rolfe a monster, a corrupt mercenary of the King's, while Rolfe believes Leonie behind the sabotages of his estate at Crewel. Rolfe has the King arrange his marriage to Leonie hoping to exact revenge and subdue Leonie into submission. Rolfe's mistress Amelia misleads Rolfe into believing she's carrying his child and Rolfe allows her to stay. Rolfe introduces Amelia as his ward, but Leonie heard the truth from servant gossip yet doesn't openly broach the subject to Rolfe.

Both Rolfe and Leonie harbor ill-begotten misconceptions of each other perpetuated by the books' antagonists that a simple talk could elucidate. This entire fiasco of a book climaxes to a pinnacle of a misunderstanding at the end which is easily dissolved in 1-2 pages.

          You get the point.

5 out of 5 stars When Love Awaits - Johanna Lindsey.......2006-12-27

It was a great story! Leonie did annoy me with her not opening her mouth and speaking up but then again that is a testament to the times I guess. She did okay in the time period in which she lives. Rolfe was a silly man thinking with his private parts but tried to do the right thing all in all. I loved it!

          3 out of 5 stars Misunderstanding .......2006-02-15

That's what this book should have been called. Overall the book was okay certainly not the best I've read from Ms. Lindsey. Leonie at times was annoying and Rolfe was just slow at catching on to things. Not bad but not great.

          3 out of 5 stars No Consistency.......2004-10-04

The author wanted us to believe that the heroine was a strong character, but didn't back up her opinion with action. Leonie and Rolf spend passionate nights together where they treat each other as equels and Rolf supposedly loves her. Then comes daylight and he's back to treating her like someone of a much lower stature.
Then he continues to keep around his "former" mistress and never tells Leonie why. He continues to act like the rake that he is and she TAKES IT!!
Leonie and Rolfe do get together and it infuriates me to no end!!! Do you see my frustration!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I Didn't Put It Down, It Was that Good.......2004-07-04

I read "When Love Awaits" in about 3 hours, and loved it. The plot is straightforward: Lord Rolfe decides to marry his reluctant neighbor Leonie to secure peace in his lands and ends up falling in love. Both characters jump of the page as totally real and likable, and the situations they find themselves aren't unrealistic. I especially liked the drama created by Rolfe's ex-mistress Amelia, who is the numero uno "bad guy" in this story. More importantly, the ending is satisfying (everyone gets theirs) and there is one especially delightful scene in which Leonie and Rolfe pit army versus army over ... jealousy. What fun!

This is definitely one of Lindsey's better medieval romances. The only complaint I can make is that the hero's ex-mistress in "So Speaks the Heart," which is an earlier Lindsey medieval romance, is also named Amelia. Are they related?!? Hah.

All in all, I highly recommend this book any day!

5 out of 5 stars Great Love Stories centered around God and Lighthouses.......2007-10-07

This is a historical Christian romance. It contains four short novellas about less than 100 pages each. These books are about people finding their faith and finding love.

The first story is about a girl who believes her call is to tend the light. But when Ian falls in love with her and she falls in love with him, she begins to question what she is supposed to do with her life.

The second story is about a widowed captain who is ready to retire to a life on land. His daughter and him make through their last ride only because of the lighthouse keeper. She turns out to be the same person who has volunteered her house to him because the hotel was full. She has a few secrets of her own and Cade is willing to help her solve her problems.

The third story is about a couple in love. The boy is from a rich family and his fiancee is not. He works for his father as a captain. He goes on one last trip but does not return in time. Will he return alive? Will his family disown him? Will they never get alone with his choice bride?

The fourth story is about a widowed mother who married to early in life and was diwowned by her parents. She has no friends until a captain comes by to thank her for tending the light. This captain falls in love with her and her son, but he resolved never to marry. Does he have a choice when he finds out she went home?

These novels are filled with Christian lessons. If you do not enjoy reading romances that have Christian undertones, this book is not for you.

I recommend because the stories are endearing and informative of the life of a lighthouse keeper.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Written, Full of Cliches.......2002-05-28

I couldn't get past the first two books in this set. The first seemed really dumb and contrived...we knew what was going to happen, the characters seemed flat, and it didn't really keep my attention. Book two further convinced me that this series was NOT worth reading and was more of the same mechanical writing and contrived plot. Disappointing. If you enjoy this type of book, I would recommend "Dakota" by Lauraine Snelling and "Colorado Wings" by Tracie Peterson.

4 out of 5 stars Keepers Of The Light When Love Awaits........2001-03-25

My love of lighthouses drew me to this story. Though I was only able to read When Love Awaits, it's characters and description peak my curiosity to read the remaining story and the others in the book. If the other stories are similar to Lynn Coleman's work, then I will not be disappointed

5 out of 5 stars A Charming Book Filled With Lighthouse Adventure!.......2001-02-26

This gem of a book tells four stories of women lighthouse keepers. The tapestry of characters with the blend in different writing styles was heightened by the beautiful backdrops.

In "When Love Awaits", a woman named Fiona falls for the persistant, Scottish Ian. In "A Beacon in the Storm", Amanda's one wish is to remain the lighthouse keeper - until she becomes sidetracked. With "Whispers Across the Blue" one feels the emotions of lovesick Jule praying for her fiancee who is out to sea. Lastly, in "A Time to Love", Eden has given up on love- but love has not given up on her.

A delightful, cozy read filled with inspiration and romance in the Lord's hand. This book is highly recommended!
