Now, two FBI agents pursuing a killer from a centuries-old cult realize they have become his prey.
Customer Reviews:
Very imaginative.......2007-10-09
This was quite a bit more graphic in its depiction of bloody violence than I am accumstomed to. However, the story is not dark or mean-spirited. It is very creative; kind of an X-Files meets the Da Vinci Code, without any harsh language or lurid sexuality. I've always been a sucker for secret passageways, and this book overflows with them. I'm glad I invested the time in its reading.
Not bad at all.......2007-04-15
For a book i only bought because i was attracted to the cover...it was pretty good. I'm not usually one to go for crime dramas/thrillers, but Liparulo was amazing at making so many different stories interconnect into a delicious outcome. Not to mention the no doubt strenuous research done. Half way through you can almost feel how hard he must have worked for his novel.
Decent Debut.......2007-03-25
I won't give this novel a five star rating because it wasn't that groudbreaking. But, it was a very well written novel, with characters that were well-developed. Olaf was probably the most interesting to me. For any christian looking for a good read this is definitely it! I also only rated it a four star because the author left one loose end. A character who seemed to play a major/minor part, seems to get left out at the end. Overall the story moves pretty fast once it gets started. There are a few twists and turns in the end that I didn't exactly see coming. This novel is a great weekend read for anyone looking for a clean thriller!
Definitely lives up to it's "thriller" status........2007-03-19
What a ride! I bought this book on whim, on the basis of the back cover description (usually I need to check reviews on Amazon first). I finished it in about three days. Very suspenseful and detailed, with great protagonists (it was kinda fun thinking of them as Mulder and Scully, but really they're not like M&S at all). Some scenes are so chilling I won't be able to forget them for a while, especially because they were written so well. But detailed also means that the gory scenes are not glossed over. Things definitely get worse for our dear Brody and Alicia, before they get any better.
I myself didn't notice any pacing problems or rushed endings. Some of the scenes in the last 1/4 of the book were the most memorable. Anyway, this was just a quick review to say I really enjoyed this book. It merits a good review because it's a thriller out of so many, and stands out above and beyond the others. Now I have to read Liparulo's next book!
Effective page-turner.......2007-02-25
Robert Liparulo's Comes a Horseman is one of those classic good vs. evil stories that, done properly, can be a lot of fun. Happily, for the most part, Liparulo does succeed and his book is generally entertaining.
The "good" in this story is a pair of FBI agents. Brady Moore is a single father, his wife having been killed by a drunk driver. The incident continues to affect him deeply, and only his son Zach is able to keep him from descending into alcoholic self-destruction. Alicia Wagner is his gung-ho partner. The two are pursuing an especially brutal serial killer who decapitates his prey; there seems, however, to be no link between the victims. The link is actually rather subtle; each has had a similar experience in his or her life.
The killer, a modern-day Viking with a set of vicious wolf-dog hybrids, is actually not your standard psychotic, but is instead working for Luco Scaramuzzi, a low-life with high aspirations. He has discovered a cult of high-powered people who are dedicated to empowering the Antichrist. Luco is working on conning these folks into giving him immense wealth and power by pretending he is the Antichrist; he is doing such a good job at it that he begins to believe he actually is the figure.
This novel is reminiscent of Jon Land with its global conspiracies and larger-than-life villains. The focus is much more on action than suspense, but Liparulo knows how to make the reader turn the pages. Although I suppose this nominally fits into the category of "Christian fiction", there is very little that makes it different from other thrillers, outside of the absence of any sex and a couple Bible references.
For a first novel, Liparulo has done well, but there is room for improvement. There are little flaws here and there, but the biggest is the conclusion which is way too abrupt. Although it does follow logically from events earlier in the book, it just brings things to an end too quickly. The final confrontation in a thriller should be the most elaborate and exciting, and Liparulo doesn't really pay off. It's not a bad ending, just one that could have been better. This is a good novel, but there's little that indicates that there can't be great ones in this author's future.

worst audio treatment I have ever heard.......2007-02-24
Normally, I would read this type of novel in book form. However, I was doing a fair amount of long commutes when the audio of Comes a Horseman caught my eye, so I thought I would give it a try. Looking back... I wish I'd read the book instead.
I agree 100% with the previous reviewer... the reader was about as exciting as a sugar-free gelatin snack without the flavor and color.
Pure monotone throughtout... impossible to focus on the different characters... no change in vocal inflection to dramatize climactic events. The reader couldn't even read the punctuation properly... sentences running together... commas ignored... questions and exclamations read with no enthusiasm.
I would give the book a try... but not the audio.
You will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this one........2005-12-06
FBI Agents Brady Moore, criminal psychologist, and Alicia Wagner are used to grisly scenes of death. They are the ones assigned to the Pelletier Killings. The murderer uses wolf-dogs to restrain his targets as he uses an axe for the killing blow. Though the MO is the same for the victims, no one could find a link to connect them.
Then Alicia located Father Duncan McAfee, a Catholic priest in Manhattan. Father McAfee has published books pertaining to near death experiences. The people who died, went to Hades, and was then granted a second chance at life would tell Father Duncan their stories. As Father Duncan told Alicia their stories, things began to come together.
Meanwhile, in Israel, Luco Scaramuzzi is with a group called the Watchers. Luco and Father Adalberto Randall are trying to convince the Watchers that the prophecies are coming true and that Luco is the Antichrist. Enter a world where right and wrong of religion is a thin line that can kill.
***** Whether you are religious or not, this novel will give you the CHILLS! There is no way I can give a clear synopsis without giving away vital information that would nullify several surprises. This is a thick novel, but the content is so intense the time just seemed to fly by for me. I must have finished reading it in record time! It grabbed me on the first page with an assassination and kept going until the climatic ending. To put it in simple words, "You have GOT to read this book." But I stress - READ. *****

Great story marred by bad reading.......2005-10-22
First of all, let me say up front that "Comes a Horseman" is a great story. The pace is well set, though the procedural parts seem to drag a little at times going into too much detail. The problem with this audio book is the horrible job of the reader. Most readers of audiobooks understand the importance of giving each character at least a slight variation in voice so as to bring the book to life for us. In CAH, the reader keeps the same monotone voice for every single character. Young or old, male or female, Japanese, Italian, or American, everyone sounds the same. It's really sad at one point when the person speaking is described as having a baritone voice...yet the reader never changes in the least. When several characters are conversing at once, it's nearly impossible to tell them apart. It's too bad that Westbow would spend so much money promoting this book and then do such an unprofessional job on the audio treatment of it.

Book Description
A hidden killer...a conspiracy of treachery...and two people caught in the most desperate game of all...
In Renaissance Italy, intrigue is as intricate as carved cathedral doors, but none is so captivating as that surrounding the prized Wind Dancer, the lost treasure of a family--and of the man who will stop at nothing to reclaim it. Lionello Andreas is bound by his vow to guard the exquisite statue. But to recover what is rightfully his, he will need the help of a thief--one he can control body and soul. He finds his answer on the treacherous backstreets of Florence, in a sharp-witted young woman whose poverty leaves her no choice. But in the end, the allure of the
Wind Dancer, and the ruthlessness of those who would possess her, will catapult them both into a terrifying realm where death may be the most merciful escape.

Enjoyable and a worthwhile read.......2007-04-08
This is not a typical romance novel. It has romance but it is more about political intrigue, murder and suspense. Although there is revenge, justice and a happy ending, there were too many loved ones who died which makes it too sad for me. Aside from that, it is well written with intriguing characters. There is heroism and great love. Sexual content: mild.

I read almost all Iris J. books this was a totally differnt track, but so good too. Lots of good history & excitment mixed in with the 2 books in this series. The characters are wonderfully deep, you feel their pain. I recomend them. Robin
History, suspense, romance, tragedy, triumph..........2006-10-03
This book has it all. Unfortunately, some might assume this is a "period piece" and not pick it up--thinking they can't relate to 16th Century Italian life. Actually, the story is riveting and you will continue to think about the characters long after you've finished reading the book. Recommended.
A trilogy of four.......2006-05-09
Albeit IJ wrote a trilogy for the Wind Dancer at least is another book with the same theme, "Final Target". So at least this is a fourth-logy.
As it says in the back cover the plot'll do twist after twist in an excellent pace so you won't know how the book'll end. The statue's story is kind of a second plot among the other stories because you really don't care what happened to it for example in the malady or in everything Lorenzo does. Mind that I didn't say that the statue is not important in the plot's book.

Book Description
A twisted psychopath...a trail of violence...and a man and woman who will risk everything to stop him...
Jean Marc Andreas wanted what was his by right. He was seeking justice--and he would use any means to get it. Juliette de Clement, a confidante of the royal family, could aid his search for the priceless treasure so many had killed to possess...and died to protect. But in eighteenth-century revolutionary France, a world of power and intrigue, soldiers and assassins, royalty and rebels, death could come in many forms and from any direction, and none more lethal--or more likely--than from the person you trusted most.
Still, Jean and Juliette had no choice but to trust each other, because their very lives depended on it. Someone else was determined to have the Wind Dancer statue--and the legacy of power it bestowed. Someone whose twisted genius for evil was already wreaking a path of unspeakable violence that only together they could stop...even as they stood to be its next victims.

It was a difficult book to get through.......2007-03-12
I have enjoyed other books by Iris Johansen Countdown, Dark Rider, Lion's Bride and Wind Dancer, but I didn't care for Storm Winds as much as I did the others.
Early in the book Iris Johansen describes in a graphic and prolonged fashion a horrid scene of rape and butchery, for me those word visions stayed with me and I dreaded what was to come from the sadistic character that would reoccur throughout the book. It's possible I am to sensitive concerning violent acts upon girls and anyone that reads this review may ask why I bothered to continue with the book, well the answer is simple it's better to read to the end so I'm not left wondering what happen, a final resolution is always the best path to pursue.

Book Description
Margaret Coel's mysteries, set on the Wind River Reservation, have been acclaimed by Tony Hillerman, who called her "a master." Now she presents her newest and most engrossing tale.
James Sherwood, aka "Orlando," has resurrected the old Shadow Dance religion, having his followers dance for days at a time for the promise of an Indian paradise. For Orlando and his followers, nothing must delay the coming of the New World-not even the investigation of Ben Holden's death. Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden and her friend, Father John O'Malley, believe that Orlando has more to do with it than he lets on. But to get the proof they need, they will have to learn his dance.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful addition to a wonderful series!.......2007-07-04
Margaret Coel's Father John O'Malley series is a winner. It's nice mixture of modern-day life with a solid background in Native American history. In this book Ms. Coel highlights shadow dancing which is an ancient Indian custom. A modern-day cult leader has gathered a bunch of young, idealistic natives together to practice this ancient art as well as to prepare for the end of this present world and the beginning of another that will place the Indian at the top of society. But people are killed, and one of them is Vicky's ex-husband Ben Holden. As Vicky tries to clear her name in Ben's murder she uncovers a plot that will destroy the Wind River Reservation. These books are great. The characters are believable, and Father John is one of most real sleuths out there today. I highly recommend this series, but suggest that it should be read in sequence.
Interesting Addition to Series.......2004-09-11
I really enjoy this series of books set on the Wind River Reservation. When I first started this one, though, I was a little disappointed because it sounded like it was just rehashing all the same plot points from previous books - Father John and Vicky pining for each other, Ben Holden demanding that Vicky return to their marriage, a new assistant for Father John, and his superior's threatening Father John with the closing of the mission.
However, as soon as the stage was set with these events, things irrevocably changed. I found this mystery very intriguing and am anxious to see where the author takes things from here.
Multi-layered plot.......2004-01-06
This is one of the best books in an excellent series. Margaret Coel spins a multi-layered plot which begins when Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden returns to her home at the Wind River Reservation after going to Denver to try to sort out her relationship with the reservation's priest, Father John. Her ex-husband, Ben, talks her into meeting him for lunch but their conversation ends in a bitter argument. When Ben is found dead, Vicky becomes a major suspect. Meanwhile Father John is dealing with the disappearance of a young Indian named Dean Little Horse and an Indian cult whose shadow dancers are twisting some of the early Arapaho religious practices. Added to this, Vicky is working on water rights for the Indians and Father John is battling his superiors who want to close the mission where he is the priest. Mix these elements together and you have an enjoyable reading experience with well-drawn characters and the beautiful Wyoming reservation as a background.
I love reading about the Wind River Reservation.......2003-09-15
Margaret Coel has a rich sense of place and describes the Arapaho/Shoshone reservation so well you can imagine you've been there many times -- and it is for this and her description of reservation life that I read her books so eagerly.
This was a pretty good mystery, involving Jesuit priest/detective John O'Malley and his Arapaho lawyer friend Vicki Holden. Vicki's ex-husband is found shot to death, and since they had just had a very public fight in a restaurant (and they are well known to have had a very difficult marriage), she is the obvious suspect. Even her own children suspect her. She must find the real killer or killers to avoid getting charged (and probably convicted) of this murder. Her only lead is a fight her ex told her about at dinner -- with two Lakota Indians who had been working for him. She must find them and discover what the fight was about, since they are obvious suspects. She believes they are hiding out at a ranch that holds an apocalyptic cult, but the cult is very secretive and locating these two men proves difficult and dangerous. John O'Malley gets involved, trying to keep Vicki from harm. He is also looking for someone -- an Arapaho man who has disappeared. Of course there is a connection between the death of ex-husband Ben Holden and the disappearance of this other man, but that connection is only uncovered late in the story.
My only complaint -- and I think Coel is figuring out this can't continue -- is the pointlessness of Vicki and John pining quietly for each other, knowing that nothing but a friendship can result. The "romance" between the two is an annoyance. I keep wanting to tell VIcki to find someone who is actually available (unlike this priest). This book suggests that Coel may be moving in that direction.
absorbing and interesting mystery.......2002-09-08
It has been four months since lawyer Vicky Holden left her high-powered job in a high profile legal firm to return home to the Wind River Reservation. She finally agrees to face her abusive ex-husband Ben at a local restaurant but they aren't together a few minutes before he loses his temper, makes a scene, and walks out.
A mortified Vicky departs from her public humiliation not long after the incident occurred only to later learn that Ben was murdered. The local FBI agent knows that Vicki had motive and opportunity, but no alibi. The gun is wiped clear of finger points except for a clear one that belongs to Vicki. Unless Vickie can find the real killer, she will be indicted for premeditated murder.
Margaret Coel has written an absorbing and interesting mystery that gives readers a glimpse into the modern day west. The protagonist is a feisty determined woman and her friend catholic priest Father O' Malley is her mirror image. Together this unlikely pair gets in and out of trouble so many times it feels as if they are stars in a Wild West epic.

Wind Dancer.......2003-02-21
This is sweet book - a fairy tale - something I needed to read to get out of the real world. Reminiscent of Daphne du Maurier and Mary Stewart, it was more sexual, but still managed to retain a subtle, soft sensuality. It is evident the writer has loved and been loved. How can one make this up? The descriptions of food, clothes and locale are clear and concise and paint a true word picture. I wonder if the author will write a sequel - she left me wondering a bit - did Nicholas really come back? Did Katherine follow her Aunt Gianetta's path to destruction? I love happily-ever-after stories and hope I read it correctly. If so, I'm happy.
