Book Description

Financial statements are the basis for a wide range of business analysis. Managers, securities analysts, bankers and consultants all use them to make business decisions. There is strong demand among business students for course materials that provide a framework for using financial statement data in a variety of business analysis and valuation contexts.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Case study is worth reading..........2007-04-21

First part of this book is about reading financial statements. If you already know the statements, you don't need to read the first part. However, even if you can read the statements, the second part, case study, will be helpful to your real analysis.

3 out of 5 stars good case study.......2006-04-30

I found the chapters are not very in detail. I was using it as the textbook and the lecture notes are way better. I read the book at the begginning but stopped in the middle as it doesn't really help. However, the end of chapter case studies are pretty good.

4 out of 5 stars Useful if cumbersome.......2002-12-16

This review applies to the edition WITH CASES. This isn't recommended for anyone who is just starting out with choosing investments. Beginners might be better off with a more general overview of financial statement analysis (FSA) like Higgins' "Analysis of Financial Statements" or Fraser and Omriston's "Understanding Financial Statements".

This was one of two textbooks used in a financial statement analysis course I took for my MBA. Most chapters are down-to-earth and as a whole the book is well-written.

The other text we used was Penman's "Financial Statement Analysis and Security Valuation" which was also a great resource as far as gaining a basic understanding of the mechanics of financial statements and how to build a valuation model.

I contrast the two books because while Penman provides a run-down of several different models analysts can use (and does a good job of arguing for the Residual Income Model of valuation model as being the best), Palepu delves into the implications of companies' choices of accounting methods and provides more insight into what different kinds of businesses should look like in terms of their financial statements.

The cases at the end of each chapter add a lot of value to the text because they get students to focus on the specific issues detailed in each chapter. By picking apart different companies' financial statements we learned to use financial statements to assess the success or failure of companies' efforts to carry out their business strategies.

I rate it "Good - 4 stars"

2 out of 5 stars Required Text.......2002-09-17

This is a required text at my school, but after having read the first 5 chapters there is almost nothing of value that I have read. I have spoken to several people that have used this text for the class in prior semesters and they told me that they had stopped reading it after the first several chapters also.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Capstone Book.......2000-10-12

This book is an excellent description of all the elements that would go into reviewing a potential investment opportunity. It is not a detailed book in one category, such as financial accounting, but it ties business strategy analysis, financial analysis, forecasting analysis, and valuation analysis together. Most other books focus on one area and don't tie all of these together well. This one takes you down the path to evaluating the opportunity to its fullest. It is an excellent capstone book after you have sifted through the details of strategy, finance, and accounting.

Book Description

February 1806: Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Bolitho carries the news of Trafalgar to southern Africa, where he is to aid British ground forces in any way he can to retake Cape Town from the Dutch. Impatient to be home, Bolitho decides yet again that the boldest measures are best, and proves to the army that brave men do not die in vain.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A preoccupied Bolitho.......2002-06-24

This is by far the longest book in Kent's Bolitho series. Unlike most books earlier in the series Bolitho spends considerable time on shore iintimately nvolved with his illicit love, Catherine, and then when he is at sea again passionately longing for her. The brave stories of a scared little midshipman who eventually finds his courage, or the lieutenant who excels despite having lost half his face are nearly lost behind Bolitho's obsessive anxieties over his separation from the bold Catherine. Bolitho, now half blinded, is showing signs of tiring and retiring. The series has become a study in the accumulated effects of endless time at sea and in fighting sharp and desperate actions. Bolitho, always deeply concerned with his men, has progressively lost the closest colleagues on whom he had depended, "we happy few," an' that's no error. Still there are flashes of the old outer heroics while fighting the Dutch for Cape Town, on a secret mission to Copenhagen, and coming to the rescue of his troubled friend Herrick at sea.

2 out of 5 stars A good series gone bad.......2001-01-04

I read the first 16 or 17 Bolitho books in a hurry, 4 or 5 years ago, and enjoyed them quite a bit. Recently I picked up this one and was very disappointed. Rather than a good story of action and history, that I had come to expect from the author, this recent edition was dedicated almost entirely to Bolitho and Catherine mooning about each other and lamenting their separations.

1 out of 5 stars Publishers padding particularly poor.......2000-11-13

I have read the Hornblower series twice and the Aubrey/Maturin series three times and I looked forward to reading another Britanic Naval series when I began Kent's Bolitho series. The series began strong but towards the end (somewhere around "Success to the Brave") the series started running out of gas. It appeared to me that the publishers requested Kent to pad the books with inane story lines (or they themselves committed the sin) in order to extend the series (at nearly US$15/book) to increase their profit. I got to the point that when I read the one of many over used phrases, such as "blood ran from the scuppers as if the ship itself was mortally wounded", I put the book down in disgust. Futhermore, I would occasionally read a few pages that reminded me of the better written books that began the series, affirming my belief that a much less talented individual had a hand in the completion of the series. I suggest to anyone looking for another Aubrey/Maturin series to pick up O'Brian's "Master and Commander" and reread that series. However, if you do pick up the Bolitho series stop investing in the books when it becomes obvious to you that the publishers are padding the stories.

5 out of 5 stars NAVAL WARFARE IN THE AGE OF NELSON.......1999-06-24

The story takes place four months after the battle of Trafalgar and the death of Lord Nelson. The main character is Vice Admiral Richard Bolitho, an aristocrat and one of the rising stars in the British navy. Bolitho is a complicated and compelling figure; with a heart as big as one of his ships of the line, he is also a ruthless and calculating warrior/officer ,seemingly capable of any action that will accomplish the mission. Bolitho is in society's disfavor because of his open liason with a married woman,( an obvious parallel with Nelson's obsession with Lady Hamilton) he is protected by his superior officers , at least professionally, because he gets results. This is the inner tension of the story and Kent handles the love interest with taste and flair. The supporting characters are fleshed out with the same detail as Bolitho, and are never predictable. Like most military leaders of that age, Bolitho leads by the strength of his personality, and no one is neutral in their feelings about him: they love him and will follow him into the worst hell or they will hate and envy him. Bolitho for his part is portrayed as almost the ideal of a best friend, you know he will literally die for you if neccessary. Having said this, Bolitho is also aware of his effect on others and is human enough to manipulate them if that will bring success to the mission. The battle scenes describing the almost point blank range these ships fought at are some of the best ever written (however, both O'brian and Kent are outdistanced by Forrester's single word picture of Hornblower frantically "striking" his colors after a battle in which 75% of his crew is killed; thats tops) and Kent's historical accuracy goes along way to put you there. The author is a member of the British upper class and the precision with which he speaks to us (even across the social spectrum from Vice Admiral to the most common "tar" ) has the other two main competitors O'brian and Forrester beat. The audio version of this title read by Michael Jayston is the perfect union of author and narrator. Jayston has that George Sanders type of inflection to his accent (slightly sinister ?) that transports you to Feb.1806. Most of these titles were written in the sixties and have been long out of print. Resurected with new interest, many are available through " MCBOOKS" in an elegant but expensive format. If your budgit allows it, these are fine produtions and easy to read (when I read all these books in the sixties and seventies I did not need glasses!). 5 stars for the book. 6 stars for the Audio version with Michael Jayston.....happy reading Cal Caligiuri

1 out of 5 stars This book is really old and outdate.......2007-05-11

This book is very old. If I would have known the majority of references would be to events and studies before 1988 I never would have bought this book. Twenty years ago is a long time in the nutrition field.

1 out of 5 stars Bias.......2005-08-27

I bought this book to learn about nutrition. Not be inundated by your beliefs (not FACTS). I will not recommend this book.

1 out of 5 stars environmental sociologist looks at this book.......2004-05-24

If it ignores biochemical individuality and pretends that all foods have the same effects on all bodies, the book is worthless and very dangerous nutritionally. It will certainly help some, though that is only because around 50% of people in the world would apply to its recommendations. For instance, foods can have different effects in different bodies.

If you want to know more about your body type before you begin a nutritional program, I suggest the following books instead. Most of the information presently known is from the sympathetic system side and very little is known about the autonomic, though these recommendations can protect you from such false suggestions of a 'common good program' for all people.

Know thyself, before you make a nutritional plan. With the following books you can:

Day, Phillip. 2001. Health Wars. Kent, England: Credence Publications.

Wiley, Rudolf A, Ph.D. 1989. Biobalance: The Acid/Alkaline Solution to the Food-Mood-Health Puzzle. M.D. Foreword by Howard E. Hagglund. Hurricane, Utah: Essential Science Publications.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Facts- nothing but the truth.......2004-04-01

If you are not one that wants the truth. Do not read this book. If you are sick of being ripped off at the super market and the BS health stores that steal your cash with fake pills and powders, then this is for you. This book is filled with nothing but facts that are solid as a rock. Nothing else.

If you want to see it some other way you can go ahead and fool yourself by ignoring the facts written here. Many of these things are not even a debate. They are simply the truth.

Reading this made me realize why so many doctors and people with a solid education in this field that I know laugh at all of the stupid rip off ads and all the money wasted.

A fact:More money is wasted on the BS, lies, and scams this book tells about than spent on proven health care by professionals. Health care that does something more than empty your wallet.

1 out of 5 stars Shameful.......2003-06-02

Outdated facts, arbitrary topics, and a false populist tone fill this careless guide. Have the authors read any scientific or medical journal published after the Victorian age?

                Customer Reviews:

                4 out of 5 stars Medieval-era romance.......2007-07-07

This novel is based around the medieval-era in France and England, Alienore of Sologne was engaged to the Butcher of Berkhamshire aka Colin of Berkhamshire two years ago. In terror, she ran away and went into hiding as a young knight. She finds herself working with Colin as he makes her into a warrior. This was not my normal time era but I found the characters and plot very interesting.

3 out of 5 stars A love it or hate it book..........2006-10-21

This is another love it or hate it book, it seems. It's actually the only one of Lynn's books that I don't care for. It was well written... I won't deny that. It's just that I didn't care for the characters and the plot all that much. I love how well Lynn can portray the emotions and caring that grow between two people who really come to love each other for who they are, rather than just because of the sexual tension that most romance writers rely on. But that's kind of hard to do when the hero doesn't know who the heroine is for the majority of the book... and the heroine is so stuck between fear of her betrothed and fear of the bad guy that it takes her most of the book to start to see the tender side of that man she's betrothed to.

I still recommend this book for Jason, though. Jason de Piaget is the third son of Robin (from If I Had You), grandson of Rhys (from Another Chance to Dream), younger brother of Kendrick (from Stardust of Yesterday), and squire-that-was of Christopher of Blackmour (from This Is All I Ask). And he's one of Lynn's best characters. Unfortunately, he didn't get his own full length novel, so I like getting to know him so well in this book. (His story, To Kiss In The Shadows, is fantastic, BTW)

All-in-all... I'd still recommend that you try this book. After all... you might be one of the ones that love it!

4 out of 5 stars Really quite Good.......2006-09-15

Colin of Berkhamshire (the Butcher of Berkhamshire) has had so many betrotheds call off their engagement for various reasons that he's gotten used to it, however one lady, Alienore of Solonge doesn't bother to make up an excuse she simply disappears. Colin's pride knows that most of the women are afraid of his overrated fierce reputation but he is truly hurt that Alienore did not even bother lying, in his hurt he claims he will kill her if he ever finds her.

Alienore escapes her betrothal and her evil stepmother Marie and goes out in the disguise of a young knight, Henri. She is quickly hired to guard a young woman, Sybil, who is being sent to an unknown betrothed. Sybil also has in her guard, a quite nasty mean knight named Etienne who takes every oppurtunity to terrorize (Henri) Ali. To her horror and Sybil's, upon their arrival, Ali discovers that Sybils betrothed is none other than Colin of Berkhamshire, the one man she's been running from for 2 years. Colin is resigned to make the most of his newest betrothed and see what happens, however Sybil has a bad habit of fainting every time he appears. To keep his mind occupied, he makes it his duty to train the weak knight Henri (Ali) and protect him from the cruelty of Etienne. Etienne discovers Ali's secret and starts blackmailing her with it. Ali still believes Colin will kill her if he discovers the truth, but she can't place his deadly reputation to the kind knight who has become her guardian. Colin travels to his fathers home to find, his father has decided to betroth Sybil to his brother Peter instead of him. His father tells him he must go find his missing betrothed Alienore to claim his inheritance. During the journey, Colin discovers Henri is a she and then later figures out Henri is Ali. He knows Etienne is blackmailing her and vows to keep her safe until she is willing to tell the truth. Ali longs to tell Colin the truth but her fear of Etienne and Colin's old vow to kill her keep her quiet. Little does she know that Colin has fallen in love with her, she also loves him but fears the truth as well. The conclusion of this story is what good stories are made of, intrigue, danger, love and laughter. What a good story.

5 out of 5 stars A laugh out loud, entertaining read.......2006-08-05

Colin of Berkhamshire has a problem. Cursed with a dangerous reputation as the Butcher of Berkhamshire, one of the most feared knights in England, he has had a score of intended betrotheds plead off of marrying him for one ridiculous reason or another. The worst offender, to his mind, was Alienore of Solonge. She didn't even bother with an excuse. She simply ran away and, while Colin would never admit to it, it hurt his tender feelings. In a fit of rage, Colin vowed that if he ever found Alienore, he would kill her.

Despite her family's attempts to locate her, Alienore has remained hidden for two years, dressed as a knight and serving as a guard to a young spoiled brat named Sybil. Sybil's family has made a match for her but they've refused to reveal the identity of her betrothed, only that he resided in England. So Sybil and her entourage made their way to England and discovered too late that Colin is Sybil's betrothed. Alienore made several unsuccessful attempts to escape Blackmour but eventually gave up and decided to do her best to keep her identity hidden. However, her job was not going to be easy. After watching another knight bully and abuse Alienore, Colin has decided to take it upon himself to train her in the skills of war.

Some of the scenes are simply hilarious. Sybil hides herself in her chambers and will not come out. She faints every time she sees Colin. Alienore quakes with fear and stammers whenever Colin talks to her, and the local healers constantly hound Colin to douse him with herbs to make him more "husbandly".

This was, by far, one of the funniest love stories I've read. The characters are simply adorable, stubborn, flawed to a fault and gifted with a dry sense of humor, and the dialogue is very engaging. This is not the first Lynn Kurland book I've read but it is one of my favorites. I guarantee you'll find this a very fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Kurland is one of the best.......2006-03-20

If you like Historical romances you'll love Lynn Kurland. She writes like she was there and witnessed the story taking place right in front of her.
There is enough romance to satisfy the romantic, enough science fiction to interest the Scifi reader.
I have all of her books and have never been disappointed in any of them. I love this author and will buy anything she puts out.

When a doctor says three little words--"You have cancer"--you may immediately think of yourself as a cancer victim. Well, this lovely "picture book" strives to help turn you into a cancer survivor by offering a primer on how to mount a battle against the disease--using psychological, medical, and family resources.

Written by Canadian Arlene Cotter--a graphic designer and writer who overcame acute non-Hodgkin's lymphoma--From This Moment On takes you on a journey through the experience of cancer. The book is light on text, but the chosen words and concepts hit home. The tone is never condescending, always gentle, but very much to the point. Cotter uses a plethora of pleasing and comforting photographs, illustrations, paintings, and graphics to deliver her message that cancer can be lived through--and lived through well. The choice is up to you: you can opt to experience every moment you have left to the fullest, set goals for yourself and realize them, or you can choose to spend the rest of your life dying.

From This Moment On is a simple, empowering, interactive reference that guides you through the psychological stages experienced by those diagnosed with cancer--from grief to fear to acceptance. It highlights the many choices and decisions about treatment that must be made, and even considers the choice that not getting treatment may be an option for some. Above all, it conveys the idea that life doesn't have to end with a cancer diagnosis; indeed, it may just begin to be lived more fully. --Nancy Monson

5 out of 5 stars Help for the toughest time - when you're newly diagnosed.......2006-11-13

I found this book to be a tremendous help to me, as I was struggling to come to terms with my own Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma diagnosis. Its entries are brief, pithy, and flow forth from real patients' experiences. This is by no means a "heavy" book - it's the sort of book you can dip into, little by little, as you feel up to it. The graphic design is a bit unusual, but effective. What this book does so very well is to provide straight, no-nonsense advice about getting through what is, by all accounts, the most difficult time for cancer survivors: the days immediately after diagnosis. Hearing the words, "You have cancer" is not the end of the world - though many of us suspect it just may be, at the time we first hear them. This book will help you realize a cancer diagnosis is NOT the end of the world, that you're not alone, and that there are lots of resources out there to help you.

I read this book after a diagnosis of inoperable brain cancer at the age of 22. It gave me strength and courage to face my fears & continue living my life. Over a year later, I still flip through it when I feel like nobody understands how much cancer changes the lives it touches. This book is incredibly easy to read because of its bite-size words of wisdom - no endless paragraphs of text! Thank you Arlene for your honesty about the difficult times that we face & how to keep living despite them.

                  4 out of 5 stars I was cocky! Then I remembered.....................2000-02-09

I was diagnosed with cancer less than a year ago and just read Arlene Cotter's book recently. At first I wondered how useful it could be, given that many of the book's affirmations have probably already occurred to many cancer patients. Then I remembered how I felt shortly after being diagnosed and realized how useful it would have been to have a book like this, filled with nonjudgemental expressions of support for the choices a cancer patient makes in living his or her own life.

For that reason, I think From This Moment On may be most useful to those who are newly diagnosed. Also, I think it would be very valuable for friends and family members of cancer patients, who often feel more helpless than the patient and could use a "window" into a cancer patient's feelings.

But I think the real affirmation has nothing to do with what's between the book's covers. Arlene Cotter was diagnosed with cancer; she then had the idea for this book, created it, and published it. That may be the ultimate inspiration here.

                  4 out of 5 stars Explorations.......2003-12-01

It is almost as hard to write a review of this book as it must have been for Mrs. Huxley to write it. Above all else, for the purposes of reading this review or the text itself, please keep in mind that it is not a novel but a recollection of her husband that the public had decided they knew so well.

If you haven't read Aldous' works, don't bother with This Timeless Moment as it would be as interesting and informative as reading a description of the flavour of a fruit you've never tried. If you have read his texts though and found yourself immersed in the worlds within the man's mind for all its brilliance and receptivity, then this book will give you insights you simply could not get anywhere else.

Not being an author herself, This Timeless Moment is not well written by any technical or literary means, but nor is it meant to be. This is a recollection of a husband by his widowed wife; it explores their time together and apart, describes the man she knew for the latter half of his life, and examines the misconceptions of the renowned author as communicated through the media. It is as to the point, as it is a scattered writing as any memory translated to paper promises to be; where it loses in technical merit it gains in heartfelt sincerity.

There is also as much in this text for the fans of Aldous Huxley's writing as there is for the man himself. The biggest gift included is the first and only copy of a novel he had begun before his death in which, it is explained, he had hoped to achieve a level of completeness previously unattained- a level he only came to understand as his illness took hold. There is also a great deal of reference to his last published novel, Island, as to how it related to the man himself and his experiences that he'd incorporated into the writing. Of interesting personal note are the many letters and transcripts of recorded conversations between the husband and wife, as well as letters by Aldous to his brother and son.

Included among much of the book are references to Aldous Huxley's experiments with psychedics which the media has given such focus and emphasis. It must be said that she is not advocating the use of the drugs, nor is she defending his choice to use them- she speaks of his and her own experiences with LSD and the level of consciousness found within them. Another review I read here on Amazon referred to her as being "preachy" about this issue, but I found that it was anything but. As evident by his writing, Aldous Huxley was interested in virtually every facet of life and the exploration of consciousness was but one of them.

Also check out www dot yourwords dot org for more about this text and others.

If you're looking for something mind-blowing, read Aldous' own writing itself like Brave New World, The Doors of Perception, Island or any other, and ignore this for now. If you have read these though and want more insight into the man lining each page, read This Timeless Moment and get past the sensationalism of the media into the mind of the woman he had shared it with.

                  3 out of 5 stars Huxley's last years.......2002-02-20

THIS TIMELESS MOMENT is Laura Archera Huxley's memoir of her marriage to Aldous Huxley. Laura Archera, a young musician from Italy, married the aging and recently-widowed Huxley in 1956. Her book chronicles their life together until his death in 1963.

By her own admission, Mrs. Huxley was not a "bookish" person. Nor was English her mother tongue. Her writing style is strangely disjointed and contains both non-sequitors and inconsistent statements. Nonetheless, her love for Aldous Huxley is clear. It is this love that makes the book worthwhile.

Due to Mrs. Huxley's tact and her awkward writing style, the reader needs a background knowledge of Aldous Huxley's life and work to understand a number of her anecdotes and veiled references. I re-read Mrs. Huxley's memoir after completing David King Dunaway's ALDOUS HUXLEY RECOLLECTED. Only then did Mrs. Huxley's story begin to make some sense.

Mrs. Huxley devotes a chapter and then some to the Huxleys' drug use. This section of the work has a "crusading" tone which I found annoying. It is followed by several heartbreaking chapters describing Huxley's final illness and death. I developed a new appreciation for this great man and his wife who worked so hard to finish one final essay, "Shakespeare and Religion", just days before his death. Mrs. Huxley's reveals that Huxley was working on a novel on mysticism at the time of his death. She states that Huxley told her in his final days that he was on the verge of fitting everything together in one last novel. She then shares the first chapter of this unnamed, unfinished work. It is beautiful (and, unmistakeably, Aldous Huxley). It is the finest chapter in Mrs. Huxley's book. I kept wishing it would go on and on.

Mrs. Huxley succeeds in showing a rarely seen side of Aldous Huxley. So often, he is portrayed as cold, aloof and cerebral. Here, Huxley is a warm, vibrant, sensual human being who is utterly at peace with himself and the world.

                  4 out of 5 stars Interesting Memoir.......2000-11-22

After reading Huxley's books for years, we finally get a glimpse into his later years through the eyes of his second wife, Laura Huxley. It is apparent throughout the book the extent to which Laura loved and admired Aldous. Nothing wrong with that.

We learn the truth about his alleged "blindness", his view of psychedelics and how he handled death. Although through my readings it was apparent that Huxley was a brilliant man of letters, the biography brought to light the kindness of the man. He was, according to Ms. Huxley, willing to avail himself and his knowledge to anyone who sought it (except perhaps reporters from whom he understandably sought sanctuary).

Even though I am sure it was unintended, we also come away with some notions about Ms. Huxley. Her devotion to Aldous, open-mindedness, and self-effacing manners shine through.

I liked the book, but somehow felt the picture was incomplete. Certainly Huxley must have had an interior struggle between his religous beliefs and his intellect. Such a struggle is not discussed in this book. Perhaps Ms. Huxley was unaware of such a struggle or perhaps Aldous had somehow transcended it by the time he met Laura.

I love anything Lynn Kurland writes. Her books, without fail, bring a smile every time. Her characters are wonderfully unique and endearing. Colin of Berkhamshire is one of them! He is not your usual tall, dark, and handsome hero. One has to scrape the grim and grimy surface of this knight to find the delightful treasure that hides just within. This is a rollicking adventure with a heroine just as unusual as her hero. Both are worth becoming better aquainted with. You won't be bored.
