    Product Description

Jesus of Nazareth has been preaching in Judea for three years and has gathered many followers with his teachings and miracles. But he has also made enemies among the rulers in Jerusalem, who fear his power and his influence and who have conspired to put an end to him by whatever means possible. Mordechai ben Uzziel's life couldn't be any worse. His daughter, Miriam, has vanished from Rome, spirited away by none other than his old nemesis — Simeon ben David. Meanwhile, Mordechai's credibility with the Sanhedrin is jeopardized when the council learns that his own daughter has become a disciple of this so-called Messiah. Simeon ben David's life couldn't be any better. After struggling to follow the Savior and to testify of his knowledge that Jesus is the Son of God, Simeon has found peace and joy in following the Master. More than that, he has found love; he and Miriam will be betrothed before the feast of Hanukkah. The family of David ben Joseph continues to follow Jesus, though the Savior's teachings now carry an undercurrent of sorrow and unsettling prophecy. And despite increasing danger, Jesus' ministry draws him inexorably toward Jerusalem. Along the way, Jesus performs miracles of astounding power; healing a woman afflicted for almost two decades, restoring sight to a man born blind, and raising Lazarus after four days in the grave. But not everyone is thrilled to hear Jesus declare, "I am the light of the world; I am the bread of life" during the Feast of the Tabernacles. As the end of Jesus' ministry and his life approaches, the lines are swiftly and solidly drawn between those who will stand for Jesus and those who will tear him down. The final volume of The Kingdom and the Crown series, , details the last week of Jesus' life his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the spiritually fulfilling Last Supper, and the crowning achievement of the atonement that begins in the Garden of Gethsemane and culminates in the Garden Tomb. In The Kingdom and the Crown trilogy, Gerald N. Lund has given us the chance to behold the man known as Jesus of Nazareth, to experience what it must have been like to walk and talk with the Master.

    Book Description

Karl Glogauer is a disaffected modern professional casting about for meaning in a series of half-hearted relationships, a dead-end job, and a personal struggle. His questions of faith surrounding his father's run-of-the-mill Christianity and his mother's suppressed Judaism lead him to a bizarre obsession with the idea of the messiah. After the collapse of his latest affair and his introduction to a reclusive physics professor, Karl is given the opportunity to confront his obsession and take a journey that no man has taken before, and from which he knows he cannot return. Upon arriving in Palestine, A.D. 29, Glogauer finds that Jesus Christ is not the man that history and faith would like to believe, but that there is an opportunity for someone to change the course of history by making the ultimate sacrifice.

First published in 1969, Behold the Man broke through science fiction's genre boundaries to create a poignant reflection on faith, disillusion and self-sacrifice. This is the classic novel that established the career of perhaps contemporary science fictionÂ's most cerebral and innovative author.

4 out of 5 stars Religious minefield .......2007-08-20

If you believe that everything in the Bible is the infallible truth, you should avoid this book. If you think that George W. Bush is in the white house because Jesus wants him there, you should avoid this book. If you think that any minute the rapture will sweep you away to heaven, you should avoid this book. If however you have an open mind about religion and you posses critical thinking skills, this book is an interesting exercise involving myth and faith. Again, if you're very religious don't buy this book. You'll just want to write a review WITH ALL CAPITAL LETTERS going on and on about how "Behold the Man" is insulting to Christians. You've been warned.

5 out of 5 stars Moorcock on Jesus.......2006-01-31

Many people say this book is a satire, but I disagree. This book is dead serious! If one studies theology (as I have done), one will find out that everything we know about the beginning of Christianity is built on guesses. Christianity is one of the major religious traditions in the world, but we hardly know how it started. As Moorcock explains in this book, all our knowledge of the beginnings of Christianity (including the New Testament) could be wrong. What would be the repercussions for Christianity?

The story of the book is as brilliant as it is simple. The protagonist of the story, Karl Glogauer, returns with a time machine to the year 28 AD, to find out all about Jesus. However, due to the rough "landing", he is wounded on arrival, and is taken care of by John the Baptist and his Essene sect. As the story progresses, it turns out that John and the other Essenes consider Karl to be the long-awaited Messiah. Karl eventually takes on this role, and dies on the cross. It turns out that Karl is the Jesus of the Biblical stories...

This sounds simple, but the book is a complex and multi-layered mixture of flash-backs of Glogauer's past. The book in a sense is a psychological analysis of Glogauer's struggle to find an authentic identity, to find himself. This struggle, in which religion plays a large role, is very realistic, but is as fascinating as is the SF-part of the story. This mixture of realism and fantasy makes this simply a brilliant book!

I don't believe that Christians should be offended by this book (though of course fundamentalists and literalists will be offended by it). The book clearly is a fantasy and I believe Moorcock had no intention to ridicule the Christian faith. The book's tone is way too serious for that. However, this book does make one think: what if... What if Jesus was simply a madman? What if he isn't resurrected from the dead? What if the Christian religion turned out to be a human invention? - Would it all matter to the central message of Christianity?

    Truly a fascinating book...

    3 out of 5 stars Addiction ? Moi.......2004-12-18

Excuse me for sailing under the above flag of convenience. It's one of my jokier pseudonyms. Thanks for the kind review -- but I'm surprised to learn I've 'struggled with addiction'. I'm probably the least addicted or addictive person I know! I'm better known amongst my friends for my abstinence. I'm very boring, I fear. I know it's fashionable to have struggled with addictions, these days, and you can scarcely have any authority with your audience unless you haven't, but I'm sorry to say I come from a family of non-addicts. My mother gave up smoking the day they published the first statistics that it was harmful and I followed not long after! I enjoy a glass of good wine on occasion. I even tend to change my regular routes to town out of boredom. My point in writing Behold the Man was not, indeed, to offend Christians. I've actually had some great reviews in the Christian press and enjoyed fine correspondence with people of religion. I was interested in my character 'imitating Christ' -- making Christ's journey when he discovered that Jesus was not the historical figure described in the Bible. When I conceived Behold the Man (at Easter 1966) I had no wish to offend, no argument with believers, merely an interest in the processes which created one of the world's greatest religions.

    4 out of 5 stars Behold a Fine Story.......2004-06-25

I read this book back when I was in High School (I believe between 1982 and 1983) and remember it to be both excellent in concept yet shocking. At the time, I was in my "rebelious" stage exploring "all things alternate". This story fit right in presenting an Alternate History that was engaging and thought provoking story, just like so many of Michael Moorcock's books.

Now 20 years later, being what I would consider a more "mature Christian", I can say that "Behold The Man" could be considered a blasphemous book, but we must remember that it is a work of fiction, and not Truth. If you are fascinated by Alternat History books, check this one out. It's not necessarily the best writing ever, but it certainly was an engaging.

5 out of 5 stars A Christian who found it to be a great book.......2004-06-04

I first read this book when it came out in novella form before being expanded into a novel. I could have gotten all disturbed and found it blasphemous, but why? Even if that was how Moorcock intended it, it's irrelevent. Moorcock was a man who struggled with addiction, and often said and did things that went against the mainstream, but so what? Christ was a rebel, and went against the traditions of his day. If you don't believe it, read the Bible. Don't blame Moorcock for an inventive time travel idea that makes for a great story, though a short one. After all it IS FICTION. You are allowed to be inventive. When you have a creative idea you can't say no just because some people may be thin skinned. Sure I realize how some people (like some of the other reviewers) might look at it and think it was great because THEY THOUGHT it knocked down Christianity, and showed Christ could easily be proven to be a myth or "just a man". Regardless of Moorcock's intention, I merely found it to be a fun read. I wasn't offended, nor did my strong beliefs waver. Censorship is not an answer, and this book should be read by anyone with an open mind who loves science fiction and fantasy. It is my favorite Moorcock book, and one of my favorite SF and fantasy.

    Book Description

The truthful Man . . . falsely accused. The innocent Man . . . illegally tried and wrongly convicted. The gentle Man . . . who suffered punishment few could imagine, much less endure. The murdered Man . . . who forgave His own merciless killers. The divine Man . . . who died as a common criminal. The willing Man . . . who gave His life for others. The ordinary Man . . . who was, in fact, the extraordinary Son of God.

Behold . . . the Man. And ask yourself the only question that really matters: Why? Why would this innocent Man walk willingly and with unwavering determination toward such a grisly end? Why would He ever accept such undeserved mistreatment?

In this incredible, historically accurate account, you will come face to face with Jesus-the Man of Sorrows. If you're honest, you'll find the amazing answer to why . . . and you'll change. When you stop long enough to look, to think, to imagine, and to truly Behold the Man, you'll never be the same again.

Chuck Swindoll leads us through a detailed examination of the events surrounding Jesus as he follows the winding pathway of his passion to the cross. This story-based investigation of the last week of Jesus's life-from the Last Supper to his death-focuses on "Why?" And in his Epilogue to this powerful, insightful book, Swindoll clearly explains to the unchurched and non-Christian reader why Jesus was willing to walk this sacrificial path to die-he did it for them.

Releasing simultaneously with Mel Gibson's stirring movie The Passion of The Christ, Swindoll's book provides Christians an excellent evangelistic follow-up tool to give to their unchurched or non-Christian friends and families who see the film. As Chuck said after a private viewing of the movie, "You'll never be the same again." And Behold . . . the Man will help ensure that fact.

For people who have read the Passion and thought about it on any basic level, this book will not offer any insightful commentary. There is the occasional Bible trivia tidbit - but none of the information offers new insight to the spiritual significance of the Passion.
However, if you have not read the Passion in the bible, and look at this book as simply a story telling of the events surrounding the crucifiction, with minimal additional perspective, you will be pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Jesus Lives! Film at 11..........2004-09-02

Obviously, we don't have footage of the events surrounding Jesus' life. But Kimball does bring Jesus to life with his descriptive writing, painstaking research, and numerous illustrations. The political and religious atmosphere of the period are exhaustively covered, as well as Jesus' own beliefs. Some other reviewers have complained this book doesn't declare Christ's divinity on each page; they missed the point. There are hundreds of books from that perspective, starting with the New Testament. This book claims to be "The Real Life of the Historical Jesus," and that's what it is. But the door is still left open for the reader to come to his/her own conclusions. A must read for anyone interested in the subject.

          1 out of 5 stars Wronnnnng!.......2004-03-20

To assert that Jesus was merely and only man, and that He had an earthly father reveals the secularist nature of the writer's opinions about Christ. However, this is not the real Jesus -- merely man and ONLY man. Jesus became man for a short time, for us, for the world. But He is part of the Triune Godhead and today is most definitely not merely a man, not merely an "influential historical figure" as non-Christians enjoy portraying Him.

This book will appeal to secularists, non-Christians and certain Christian sects which do not consider Jesus to be Divine. But this book is also not to be construed as the truth as it regards Jesus' nature; He is fully God and was fully man. To ignore the "fully God" part or to gloss over it is to ignore the very nature and truth of Christianity as one of the world's great monotheistic religions.

2 out of 5 stars So close, yet so far off!.......2004-02-28

This author does a commenable job of describing the political realities of the Roman occupation of Judea, and the political intrigue of the day.

But Jesus was not mere man! Although fully man, he is also fully Diety. To assert an earthly father is to belie any trust in what Jesus said of himself. Take, for instance, when Jesus said "before Abraham came into being, I am" Abraham, the patriarch of the Jews, was born some 2,000 years before Jesus, and yet Jesus claimed to already exist!

Jesus did not need to be saved by his suffering, we did! His is OUR savior! He is perfect, we are flawed. Those flaws disqualify us from being able to exist in the presense of a Holy God. Before he created the universe, this God decided to pay the price for our failings, and through our acceptance of this payment allow us full access to ont only the throne, but to the adoption as His children!

That Jesus did miricles is not something that can be dismissed, or denied, merely because of the passage of time! That these things were as natural to him as breathing is to us was witnessed not only by his chroniclers, but by thousands who did not know him. Those who were familiar with the lame, the blind, the leporous and the dead. This is not the work of some magician who used accomplices to dupe observers. The mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, friends and neighbors were witness' of these things!

Ichi Home! Behold the Man! This 'god' that I have had torn to shreds before your eyes! Take pity on him, as I have done!

This was the cry of the Pilot! Caught in the aftermath of a failed attempt on Ceasar's life. Desparate to show his ability to bring peace to a troubled region. Having already been recalled to answer for poor administration, fearing the rumours that inevitably find their way back to Rome. (Failure was often rewared with a command to commit suicide!)

And this was not some tragic end to a possible heroic life. This end was foretold, in detail, hundreds and thousands of years before it happened. The Tora, the bible of the Jews, had come to it's then current version some 300 years before the birth of Jesus. Everything, every aspect of his life was foretold. From his birth, the things he would teach to the type of death he would experience - all clearly written down hundreds of years before it happened.

Finally, his resurection. This is the seal, the confirmation of all he said and did.

And this was not witnessed simply by a handful. Upwards of 500 people at one time, who saw him on that cross (and don't be fooled - the Romans never allowed someone down from a cross alive!) saw him walk the earth, talked to him, touched and ate with him after being crucified.

Two of the men who wrote the gospels and the letters, Matthew and John, were eyewitnesses to these events. Mark and Luke wrote down what they heard from eyewitnesses.

All of the New Testament was written before the Roman General Titus, the son of the Emporer Justinian, executed the Roman version of the "Final Solution" in 70 AD.

Although well written, this "story" must be rejected as from one who himself rejects the true nature of Jesus and what his life, death and resurection is all about.

          1 out of 5 stars interested Christian.......2003-08-15

Any book that purports to represent the historical Jesus and yet claims He has an earthly father and that His miracles were some form of medicine is pretty much more of a fairy tale rather than a true story of Jesus. I think the author was trying to steal the real Jesus from people by pretending this great knowledge.

Historically, it is impossible to have proof either way that Jesus was born of God or not, Having witnessed many genuine miracles Jesus has done in this day, I feel sorry for the guy who thinks Jesus Christ is a phony. There is a heaven to gain and a hell to shun.Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and get saved!

The recent discovery of the burial box of James, brother of Jesus is archeological proof that Jesus, the man, existed. It's up to each one whether to accept him as God or not. I was disappointed that this promising book did not back up Jesus as God.

5 out of 5 stars World Class microphotography.......2005-03-29

This book is stunning in its capturing of the human body in ways that still seem impossible even after I am familiar with them. This book with its hundreds of large, detailed microphotographs gives you a whole new sense of what it is to be alive and what you are alive inside of. If your a doctor or a srudent or just an inhabitant of a human body, this book will make you feel more at home where you are.

3 out of 5 stars Pirate and warrior on the high seas.......2007-05-22

"Beyond The Wild Wind" introduces us to the feisty female pirate Istabelle O'Bannon. Well, she's not exactly a pirate, more a kind of Robin Hood character trying to make up for the flaws in her mother's behaviour towards the poor and needy by redistributing wealth to them. However her already impetutous nature has become worse since she was captured by a sea captain named Horik who mistreated her in some as-yet known way. There is only one man that she thinks can help her fight back against Horik and that is her cousin Mangan whom she hasn't seen for ten years. Still, she applies to Mangan for help by letter and waits for him to come.

Mangan, however, is spending a year in a monastery trying to find meaning in his life as the heir to an Earldom so when Istabelle's letter arrives he doesn't know what to do. However a warrior, Ruark Haagen, arrives at the monastery with his injured foster brother and Mangan realises that this famous mercenary will be able to help Istabelle. He bargains with Ruark to help his cousin in return for free medical care for Sven, the foster brother.

So Ruark, a mercenary warrior whose goal in life is earning enough money to retire and that's about it, meets up with Istabelle. Unfortunately he doesn't meet her in the best of circumstances and when she mistakes him for her brother Mangan he is required to continue the deception for a little while. However the little while extends to quite a long while as this story relies on "the Big Misunderstanding" to keep the protagonists apart, at least for a little while. Ruark ends up on Istabelle's ship as they search for Horik's lair. But Istabelle finds herself strangely drawn to her cousin Mangan, who seems rather different than she remembered, and they also clash many times verbally as they are both strong characters. As they face Horik and learn things about each other, can the love between two people of such different rank survive?

This book relies on the "Big Misunderstanding" for much of the plot and after the truth is revealed it relies on hero coming to the rescue and saving the day. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with the storyline in this book, I just found it rather unsatisfying. There were too many clichéd set-pieces, the behaviour of the baddie seemed fairly inexplicable in reality terms but was necessary for the plot, and the heroine's tame gyrfalcon was frankly far too intelligent for a bird. There were some rather awkward plot requirements too, such as the thing that Horik has stolen that Istabella needs to get back; it all felt a little unlikely and Horik was an amazingly stupid baddie. The love scenes between hero and heroine were also rather more corporeal than emotional.

The setting on the high seas was good fun and there area some swashbuckling swordfights. The book is enjoyable as a light read but it didn't have great depth for me and it is ultimately forgettable.

              2 out of 5 stars I've read better-.......2006-03-23

This is my second Sasha Lord book- The first was "In A Wild Wood"-which I really enjoyed once I got past the whole rape thing. I gave this book 2 stars because, although it's taken me a long time to finish, I feel the NEED to finish it,wanting to know how it ends- BUT--I couldn't get past the "ick factor" in the fact Istabelle thought Ruark was her cousin and still made love to him and how Ruark left her with her most hated enemy for over a month to be beaten and for all he knew worse, any true hero would have save her right away no matter what. But all in all I will read more of her books.

3 out of 5 stars Beyond the Wild Wind.......2006-02-15

Though she is brave and daring, a lady Robin Hood/Captain Blood, Istabelle O'Bannon does need help from a man, and so she turns to the only one she trusts, her cousin Mangan. However, she has not seen the man in years, and so when he is unable to come and sends another man, Ruark Haagen, she assumes Ruark is Mangan and never gives him a chance to explain. So, although Ruark finds that he is powerfully attracted to the lady, since she is his "cousin", she's off limits; and although Mangen is really the only man who can help Istabelle, Ruark does his best to help in any case.

*** Vivid imagery and sweeping scenes will carry a historical romance fan back to another time and place. Although much of the action is built on the strength of miscommunications, the powerful prose compensates for the slightly weak premise. ***

4 out of 5 stars intriguing historical romance .......2006-02-08

Sea Captain Istabelle O'Bannon of the Adventuress steals loot from pirates to redistribute back to their victims. However, she has been captured by her enemy Horik who takes her greatest treasure from her; something that she needs to have returned if she is to regain her confidence. Desperate for help she sends a note to a monastery where her best childhood friend Mangan O'Bannon is spending a year of reflection. When mercenary Ruark Haagan arrives at the monastery seeking help for his badly injured companion Sven, Mangan cuts a deal. Ruark goes in his place to assist Istabelle in exchange for no fee for caring of Sven.

Ruark assumes that Istabelle is just a silly lady with no real troubles. She thinks he is Mangan who she has not seen in a decade; so is stunned when he refuses to help her. He changes his mind, but fears he must not reveal his identity for he will scare her off. As she keeps secret her treasure from her champion, Ruark and Istabelle fall in love, but first with his help she must confront her devil Horik while her beloved must reconsider his theory that there is no place called home.

BEYOND THE WILD WIND is an intriguing historical romance that takes off from the moment that Istabelle tosses the bathing Ruark's breeches high on a tree and absconds with his sword. The story line never slows down as she mistakes his identity as her anointed hero, a role the mercenary does not want to be, but his desire of her gives him no choice. The final exhilarating confrontation provides a too convenient solution to part of Istabelle's dilemma, but also climaxes a delightful romance.
