Book Description

Lori Shepherd and the phantom Aunt Dimity have become one of the mystery genre's most celebrated detective duos. In their latest adventure, a pleasant woodland stroll through the English countryside is rudely cut short by the blizzard of the century, forcing Lori to take shelter in Ladythorne Abbey—an old pile still haunted by the presence of the madwoman whose prison it once was. But the abbey's greatest secret is the priceless jewel it conceals somewhere within its cloisters—an heirloom that hides a treacherous past that Lori's fellow guests can't wait to get their hands on. Only Aunt Dimity's indispensable wisdom can help Lori unravel a mystery that is considerably thicker than the accumulating snow in this page-turning treat.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Hot Cocoa and Aunt Dimity.......2007-09-22

Needing a break from her exhausting Christmas Holiday, Lori decides that a nice hike in the country will do her good. Unfortunately, an unexpected winter storm and her lack of map reading skills put Lori at Ladythorne Abbey with what appears to be two other stranded hikers. With Aunt Dimity's help, Lori finds out the mystery of the Abbey and discovers the ulterior motives of her fellow houseguests. I didn't enjoy this one as much as the previous, Aunt Dimity Takes a Holiday. Very little is mentioned of the steady cast of characters that make Atherton's books so charming and homey.

3 out of 5 stars Easy Cozy Read.......2006-06-21

I have read a number of the Aunt Dimity novels and intend to read the rest. They are a nice light distraction for someone, like me, is too stressed right now to read more "serious" literature. The novels are formulaic, pleasingly so, like the old Nancy Drew novels, except more adult. Lori is once again away from home in an old house, unexpectedly snowbound with two strangers and a somewhat wacky-seeming old retainer. She has of course brought her faithful stuffed rabbit, Reginald, and Aunt Dimity's journal. Of course, whever Lori goes, mystery is sure to follow. This time it has to do with the past. One thing that I did find annoying, as another reviewer pointed out, is that in every book, Lori is swooning after some handsome male she encounters. In this one, she seemed to have gone overboard with lust. I would like it better if the author gave Lori more loyalty to her wonderful husband. A little mild flirting once in awhile is okay, but for heaven sake, give her some self control.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Delightful..........2006-04-12

I've just finished this book and am on the look-out for MORE Anut Dimity stories (this being my second).
There's a deeper message here than just an enjoyable adventure-mystery. A transplanted American, living in England finding herself stranded in an old English castle... the mystery takes a twist that completely took me by surprise! I enjoyed this book immensely!

4 out of 5 stars Snowbound.......2005-10-08

All of the Aunt Dimity books are quaint but lively. Aunt Dimity,Snowbound continues as an excellent addition to this series. The people and circumstances are believable, even though you know they are fictional. A nice, relaxing read.

4 out of 5 stars Aunt Dimity fans will want to see this.......2005-06-09

If you like the series, I imagine that you will enjoy this latest installment. I enjoyed it thoroughly and I like it better than the last couple. The theme, which I will not reveal lest I give away some of the plot, is certainly one that we all have to deal with. I will probably be thinking about this for quite a while.

For people who are not familiar with the series, This is the ninth book in this series, the first being Aunt Dimity's Death (Aunt Dimity Mystery). They tend to be so sweet and full of good will as well as the somewhat twee touches of "live" stuffed animals and ghosts, that I almost feel guilty for liking them. I've read every one, however, so I tell you only for your information; you presumably know your own taste. Nancy Atherton does deal with some very deep and important issues along the way; they aren't simply fluff. The mystery fan may want to be aware that these are not necessarily murder mysteries, and that the main mystery is sometimes in the past.

This is the second cozy mystery that I have read recently, Jeanne M. Dams' Winter of Discontent: A Dorothy Martin Mystery (Dorothy Martin Mysteries) being the other, that deals with forgiving crimes committed during World War II - must be the anniversary putting it in people's minds. I found this one much more satisfying.

I am one of the people who finds the main character Lori's roving eye rather annoying. She is married to Mister Perfect as it is, and she keeps running into and almost falling for another fabulously attractive man every book for the last few books! This is a less than charming plotline that isn't improved by being overused. It struck me in this book that one of the reasons that it is so jarring is that so much of the series is a tribute to people who are faithful to their One True Love, even after death. There are exceptions, but Dimity never married after her fiance's death, Lori's mother never married after being widowed. Aunt Dimity asserts someone's integrity by stating: "he remained faithful to his first love until his own tragic death ... ." It seems particularly shoddy then that Lori can't stay focussed on her own happy marriage.

Thoroughly enjoyable, a series definitely worth trying for fans of cozies.

This series is awesome. They are so easy to read that you just flow. The only complaint is skipping in the years but you could not begin to read all of the years i guess. Very hard to put down once you start reading.

Good strong moral values are taught in this series. Easy reading gives you an idea of what it was like to live in the 1800's including travel, homelife, and strong work ethics. It takes you back to a slower pace of life. These books are worth reading.

      5 out of 5 stars Refreshing!!!.......2007-05-07

I bought all the movies and all the books for my Mom (83) and she absolutly loves them, she read all 8 books in about a week, said she "just couldnt put them down"!! Highly reccomended!!

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and soulful!.......2007-05-06

The Love Comes Sotfly books are wonderful! The characters jump out at you and come alive. They are much better than the Hallmark movies, and it was fun to read the differences and follow the lives of Clark, Marty and their children through the pages. Read the Prairie Legacy also by Janette Oak, they continue the story of Clark and Marty. What a wonderful set of books, I really reccommend them, especially if you like sequels and want to know the rest of the story.

As is the opinion of other readers, her second book just wasn't as riveting as the first. Based on those other reviews, I'm looking forward to reading her third book.

4 out of 5 stars A Little Unbelievable, but Still Good.......2005-12-29

I was extremely impressed by Megan Carter's debut book (On the Wings of Love) earlier this year and anxiously awaited this second book. Although not as good as Wings, 'When Love Finds a Home' is a very enjoyable read and a recommended addition to any self respecting lesbian's bookshelf.

Through a nearly fatal incident, Anna Pagonis meets two homeless women - Rona and Tammy - and Tammy's two young daughters in the middle of winter. Rona and Tammy help Anna to the hospital and back to her house, then Anna asks them to stay for the night. Not wanting to send her guardian angels out into the cold, Anna accepts the untrusting women into her home and her life. She also helps them get back on their feet. Somewhere in the middle of it all, Anna and Rona fall in love.

I'm not saying it couldn't (or wouldn't) happen, but Carter is stretching this reader's imagination a lot. Think about it... a woman just gets attacked by two homeless men then brings two homeless women into her uppper middle class home... then she falls in love with one of them. It's a little far fetched, but isn't that why we read this stuff anyway?

The writing is very good and easy to follow. The characters are likable and have depth. Carter's writing is similar in quality and maturity to Karin Kallmaker -- one of my favorites. I see that she has another book due to be published mid-2006 and can't wait to read it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, uplifting story !!.......2005-12-22

This is a well written story that is tremendously positive. It is a perfect read at the holiday season and I can see taking it out every year to read at this time.

The humor is perfect and all the main characters a delight to get to know. The drama is real and keeps you from putting the book down until the last page. There is also a beautiful romance that develops and it doesn't wait for the last chapter to unfold.

from the publisher's web site - Anna Pagonis could never have anticipated how dramatically her life would be changed by a frightening encounter within a San Antonio office parking complex.

On a frigid February evening, Anna's escape is assisted by two women who are reluctant to come forward after the rescue. When Anna finally locates Rona and her friend, they become a daily part of her life and a comfortable routine is established. Then a harsh betrayal casts doubts between them and causes Anna to make a hasty decision.

What will it take for Anna and Rona to find their way back to each other again?

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable and Heart-warming.......2005-12-04

I was impressed with author Megan Carter's first novel, On the Wings of Love. I feel even more strongly about her second effort. Although the plot has nothing to do with the holiday season, this book will certainly get you in the mood to remember how to give. It will put a smile in your face as you struggle with those friends and family for whom it is usually difficult to find the right gifts. You'll get that warm, tingly feeling, because this book will make you really think about what each person really needs or really wants.
Yes, a typical, standard lesbian romance can do that for you. Though there's nothing standard or very typical about this novel, except that it is concerned with love, but maybe of a different sort than you'd normally expect in a romance, though there is plenty of that sort too.
Roni is homeless and desperate. So is Tammy, only she has two small children to worry about. It is a very cold night, and getting colder. In spite of every lesson Roni has learned about surviving on the streets, and rule number one is look out for yourself first, she is reluctantly put in a position of helping others, starting with Anna, who is about to be mugged in the parking lot while Roni and Tammy are trying to sneak into her office building for the night. Giving up their one chance for a warm place for themselves and Tammy's kids, they come to Anna's rescue.
We are introduced to a large cast of characters, each lovingly and skillfully drawn, including Anna's large and gregarious Greek family, Malcolm, another homeless friend of Roni's who gets into an even more dangerous situation than trying to survive on the streets. There are past histories that are slowly revealed, current situations that get more and more entangled.
The most carefully drawn character is Roni, who finds it difficult to let go of her survival skills, who at first doesn't even trust herself.
After rule number one comes the second: never trust anything or anyone. Anything good can vanish in an instant. Roni, against her will, begins to relinquish her fears and build a new life for herself, accepting help though it scares her to do so, giving help when she knows she can't really afford to, learning to relax and become a member of the world again. Her slightly larcenous tendencies, her hard view of life and protecting herself, her constant scheming, everything she had used to get by, are replaced, and it's not an easy transition at all. She resents Anna, with her secure life, her nice family, her impulse to try to do good.
Tammy, constantly worried about her four-year-old twins, and about her abusive husband who may find her at any time, has an easier time readjusting to "real life" and begins the journey back before Roni, leaving her isolated in her own wariness and mistrust. She has the immediate needs of her children and establishing a normal life for them children to pull her along. Roni, having lost everything through no fault of her own, has no such impetus, but she makes the first steps, accepting a temporary job in Anna's office even while considering how she can steal enough to make it for a while if she gets thrown out all of a sudden.
Yes, there is a happy ending. Trust me, this book will make you feel good. It will make you think, and it will leave you with a sense of profound gratitude and a more open heart, just in time for the holidays. Enjoy.

After reading Phyllis Staff's book on Finding Great Senior Housing, I could not get the following picture out of my mind:

The facility's marketing director is looking out her window waiting for her next appointment to arrive. When she sees them coming up the walk, she goes to front door to meet them. The welcoming smile suddenly changes when she notices they are carrying a copy of Finding Great Senior Housing. She knows these people will have the right questions and will want them answered.

When you see that expression you will be able to quickly tell how proud she is of her facility. This a must read if you anticipate you or an elder in your family may choose an eldercare facility as the best living option.

              Product Description

Book 8 of the bestselling Love Comes Softly series. Leaving her little prairie town, Belinda Davis never dreamed that the excitement of living in Boston would leave her restless and empty inside. Wealth, literature, travel, and romance touched her life with choices and decisions that brought dissatisfaction rather than joy. She discovered that only when God had first place in her life was her peace restored. Belinda once again faces decisions about her life that are no less difficult than before. A very unexpected responsibility makes the choice even harder.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Love Can Come Home Again........2005-09-07

This is book 8 in the 'Love Comes Softly' series which took ten years to complete. This is the wind-up for the Davis family which has grown too large and scattered that getting them back together for a reunion just wouldn't work; such events were unlikely in those days as the distance was too great and travel too difficult and expensive.

In this conclusion, Bea had moved to Boston where the excitement of being in a city full of activities and historic sights was worse even than her little prairie town. In the bigger towns, as I've found to my despair, you find yourself restless, lonely with an emptiness inside which seems impossible to fill. Her choices, as were mine in coming 'home' again, brought harm and discomfort instead of the peace she wanted. Decisions are sometimes made on the spur of the moment and not well thought out, thus not so rewarding as she'd wish it could be.

She takes on an unexpected responsibility which strikes a responsive chord in my heart. She is a courageous young woman about to enter another phase in her life because the one person she never expected to see again, the love of her life, surfaces and causes some havoc and much joy to which she is entitled.

Ms. Oke from Canada has written several series of books and devotionals. She has had a very prolific career in her area of Christian writing. There is a biography of her written by Laurel Oke Logan and a cookbook by Barbara and Deborah Oke.
