Book Description
Men and women test the limits of love and devotion in this sexy and suspensful first novel, which evokes the emotional honesty and moral complexity of real life.
Newcomer Shonda Cheekes makes her contemporary debut in a hip, wonderfully wise story about letting go and moving on.
When Yani Fenton married Jarrin Miller, she thought it would last forever. But five years ago, her husband of fifteen years walked out on his family without a backward glance. Since then, Yani and her two children have played a waiting game, certain that he is coming back. Now, with the help of her friends and her sister Asia, Yani is finally over her "love hangover" and ready to get on with her life. At a party, she meets Alex Chance, a prominent New York businessman who's looking for a relationship with a woman who isn't out for everything she can get. Their powerful attraction leads to a whirlwind courtship and a fairy-tale like wedding. But their happy ending is threatened by Jarrin's sudden reappearance, which forces Yani to face the truth about her marriage -- and the life-altering choice she will have to make as another man's wife.
With generous helpings of affection, humor, and romantic suspense, Shonda Cheekes has created a story that crackles with wit and the rifs and rhythms of modern life. Alternating between the first-person outlooks of Yani and Alex, Another Man's Wife captivates readers with a sassy tale of brothers and sisters on the move andsearching for love and fulfillment. Imbuded with the author's fresh, unique voice, it is a provocative and seductive look at relationships in the twenty-first century.

Amazing.......2006-10-03
This book was great. A friend suggested I read it and I didn't regret it. It had me so blown away. Get the book it is great.
nicely done.......2006-08-04
this was a very nicely done story that ended not like you might have wanted to but it still left you satisfied
Too long and boring.......2006-07-10
This book was too long and for no reason. The story line was good but I expected more. The author never really explained why Yanci's husband left and when the subject did come up, it was cut short. Some of these reviews on here give you the wrong idea. I really thought this book was going to be the bomb, but I think it was a waste of money. Get it from the library or borrow from a friend
Love Does Conquer All.......2006-05-10
This book had it all. I enjoyed every page. I literally could not but it down. Once Yani and Alex hooked up it was on from there. I laughed, cried even became angry at the actions of these characters. Alex was a dream come true. Yani seemed to have it together until Jarrin came back in the picture and then I thought I was going to loose it. I could not understand her actions. Poor Asia was in for a rude awakening. But in the end love does conquer all. I bought the sequel and can not wait to start reading it tonight. Shonda Cheeks did a good job.
Pretty good.......2006-02-20
I really liked this book. It started off a little slow, but I really enjoyed the ending. Can't wait to read the sequel.

SLOW...NO PASSION at all!.......2007-07-06
This novel is slow and dull especially the first 3rd of the book. The heroine is cold and prudish...almost impossible to like. The hero is not very notable...just the typical rake. It was very hard to continuing reading after the first 50 pages of the truly unlikable and cold heroine. The rest of the story is lackluster...they have a dull courtship, make dull love, and a dull ending...even in the novel the characters feel like they lack the all consuming passion that makes a good novel!!
A Summer to Remember.......2007-02-25
3.5 stars. I have really enjoyed Mary Balogh's books. This book was missing a lot of the humour that is found in so many of her novels. This said, I still found this book very enjoyable. The characters were very likeable and their development was thoroughly explored. I did find it a little repetitive when it came to how Lauren came to be her uppity self. Kit and Lauren's romance was slow to bloom and passion eventually came along with it.
Balogh's earlier books different ..........2007-01-19
When one follows an author closely, it's fun to see how their writing changes and matures. Even though it's different (slower?) I thoroughly enjoyed re-reading A Summer to Remember. And it's a "must" read if one is to understand the Bedwyn Series.
An excellent portrait of characters with hidden depths.......2006-10-29
This book is a semi-sequel to "One Night For Love" which told the story of Neville Wyatt, Earl of Kilbourne, and the discovery on his wedding day to Lauren Edgeworth that his former wife Lily, that he believed dead, was alive. One Night For Love tells the story of Neville and Lily and Lauren appears in that as a cold, hard woman.
A Summer To Remember is Lauren's story and picks up a year after "One Night For Love". She has continued living in the dower house attached to Kilbourne's estate and so is constantly reminded of her wedding day disaster. She is enticed to London by her friend, the Duchess of Portfrey, who is due to give birth and wants London doctors. Lauren believes she can safely go to Town with the Duchess as she won't be required to go to ton events and be laughed at as the jilted bride.
Kit Butler, Viscount Ravensberg, is a misbehaving rake who continually gets into scrapes. He first lays eyes on Lauren whilst brawling with 3 labourers in a park and then being kissed enthusiastically by a milkmaid. But he has a problem - his father is arranging a marriage for Kit with his deceased brother's intended and Kit doesn't want to go along with this - he needs a bride of his own choosing.
He decides to choose Lauren, sight unseen, and court and woo her. And so he begins, knowing she has a reputation as an ice maiden but relishing the challenge. Lauren's well-meaning relatives warn her off him which causes her to spend time with him - time which is fun and different from anything else. When they realise that a fake betrothal would serve for both of them to extricate them from awkward situations they agree to it. Kit needs a fiancée so that his father's choice for him, Freyja Bedwyn, knows to look elsewhere; Lauren needs some time away from her family to prepare to live retired as a spinster in Bath. Kit promises Lauren a summer to remember at his father's estate, Lauren promises to help him try and heal the rift with his family.
These two people - Kit the fun, warm, lighthearted man and Lauren the ice-cold maiden - have hidden depths and part of the excellence of this book is how their lives are unpacked and they learn to understand each other. I enjoyed this book even more on a second reading as I was able to read it more slowly, rather than racing through the plot, and see some more of the nuances of behaviour.
This book also features the Bedwyn clan in the `slightly' series. I've never been that keen on them all and this book didn't change that, but it's an interesting intersecting of her other series of books with this one. I believe there's also a book in progress about Kit's younger brother which would be part of this series.
As this book moves on it becomes more and more gripping and moving as Lauren and Kit understand each other better. It's the sort of book that can bring tears to your eyes and I think it a real triumph that you are rooting for someone like Lauren who initially seemed so cold and unpleasant. I strongly recommend this as a read just as a well-written story but especially if you like to look deeper into your characters' thoughts and motivations.
A romance to remember.......2006-08-13
Every woman has met a man like Kit--handsome, daring, full of fun, prone to outrageous behavior--does he take anythibng seriously? Stuffy Lauren doesn't think so. She's unaware that Kit, a much-decorated officer (Napoleonic Wars), has a lot he wants to forget, including responsibility for his brother's capture and torture. Lauren has her own skeletons in the closet; but, like Kit, she hides them well. Because of her cool reserve, Kit picks Lauren as the perfect fiancee--for the summer. He convinces her to play the part to stop his family matchmaking. It's no surprise when Kit makes Lauren begin to take chances, have fun, laugh, and reveal emotion. More important, she sees his serious side too. They share their secrets and help each other heal. When the summer's over, however, Lauren leaves hin as planned. How Kit makes their engagement a reality makes for a lovely ending. This is a memorable novel for several reasons--it has well-developed characters to care about, a reasonably convincing plot and appropriate period detail, and a charming love story.

Repetitive, Unbelievable, and Poorly Written.......2006-04-08
A reprint of an older book, Remember Summer is a bid by the author to capitalize on her success and name recognition without doing the work of writing a novel up to her current standards. The story premise is interesting but the execution is rough. A better editor would have cleared up the glaring repetition and plot inconsistencies. Despite the sometimes ridiculous dialogue and unbelievable interactions of the characters, horse enthusiasts will find a lot of Olympic action and detail to distract them from the cliched romance and graceless writing style.
THE BEST BOOK EVER!.......2004-11-05
I am a LONG time Elizabeth Lowell fan. I love ALL her books, I keep them all and re-read them often, but this one is my all-time favorite. I have TONS of books here in my house, and Remember Summer is the one that is worn ragged b/c i read it so often. I love the characters Raine and Cord, love the chemistry between them, and i love the connection Raine has with her horse. All of Elizabeth Lowells books lodge themselves in my heart, but this one has been my personal favorite since the first time I read it. Trust me, You'll love it...those who don't shouldnt be reading romance in the first place. I wouldn't give ANY of Lowell's books a bad review. They're all great. And this one is the greatest! ENJOY!
Remember Summer THE BEST.......2004-06-16
Of all the many Elizabeth Lowell books I have read, this is my all time favorite. The love story between Cord and Raine touches deep inside your heart. The description of the Olympic Event makes you want to jump on a horse and start riding. I have read this book about 20 times and will probably read it about 20 more.
An Excellent Read.......2003-11-16
Some other readers have bashed this book for not being realistic about the horse aspects of the story. Well I say, if you want horse facts, get an equestrian book! This is a romance novel!! And an excellent one at that. The main character, Raine is a loveable young woman who's been overshadowed by her father's wealth and her older sisters' beauty all her life. Until she finally finds something that she was good at and could call her own--horseback riding. Her riding career culminates at the Olympic games where she meets our hero, Cord. The two share an undeniable attraction so powerful that it leaves them both off balance. Throw in some past hurts and a few very present dangers and you've got a real page-turner.
Unbelievable romance and bad character development.......2003-05-16
My first problem was with the development of all the characters in the novel except Raine.
The hero, Cord, there just wasn't much depth to him. He wasn't a well-developed character; the reader never gets a feel for who he is or why he falls in love with Raine. As another reviewer said, he's basically a cardboard cutout. Also, there is virtually no mention of the other Olympic riders at all. I would assume that Raine would interact with her team members at some point, but she hardly ever does. Her mother and other family members are also conspicuously missing from this novel; there should be more mention of them.
The other big problem I had was the progression of the romance. In their first encounter, Cord attacks Raine with no warning and she fears for her life. Within the hour, they are making out and she's agreeing to date him. Their reactions to each other from this meeting are completely unrealistic. Their relationship continues in this unrealistically rapid fashion for the rest of the novel. They fall in love very rapidly, but I had no real idea why they would have. The author never really does a good job of building up the romance or explaining why they love each other.
I liked Raine for the most part. Her character was well developed and she had you rooting for her. I do think she had way too big of a chip on her shoulder about her father; her constant complaining about him got old. Also, I thought it was strange that she didn't seem to have any friends among the other riders, she almost never spoke to anyone but her coach and Cord. That didn't seem realistic to me.
I really liked the horse aspect of this novel; it made for an interesting story. I don't know much about competitive riding or horses so I have no idea how based in reality this plot-line is, but I enjoyed it.
Overall, I thought this romance was okay, but it could have been so much better. I would not recommend it because there are so many better romances out there. I'm hoping my next Elizabeth Lowell is better than this one.

Great for teaching writing in elementary and middle school.......2007-07-06
This timeless story needs to get back into print. A girl explores her feelings and memories of a recent wonderful summer. This book has so many wonderful metaphors and similes, a flashback, and art that parallels how the story goes back and forth from present to past.
I use this book in classes with teachers to assist in the teaching of writing. First of all, this book makes nearly everyone think of a memory they have, which may be a worthy writing topic, whether it's a vacation, former home, or any other special place lodged in someone's fond memories. So it helps generate topics for writing stories in classes.
Second, because of the wonderful metaphoric language, JEMIMA makes a good model to use in the study of methaphoric language, a common topic in K-8 curriculum.

Don't Forget.......2001-11-28
Sooner or later most family siblings will have to come to the acknowledgement that their parents are not just getting old, they are old. It is always a hopeful dream of any aged person, that they will not have to be institutionalized and that they can go quickly and not be a burden on their children. But for many families, that just doesn't happen.
I would suggest for family siblings having to deal with aging parents, that they purchase this book and read it together. In- spite of the fact that the Kirkus Review said this was a sad story, I think "If I Forget, You Remember" has a lot of wonderful humor to it. Humor is the key to anyone's salvation in taking care of the aged.
Carol Lynch Williams has done a wonderful job in making sure the reader doesn't get bogged down in the seriousness of the book. She has managed to show the devastaion of Alzheimers desease yet instills a sense of confidence that taking care of an aged parent isn't only possible, but it can be done while maintaing a somewhat normal lifestyle.
The one great quality of this book is how the family supports the mother/grandmother and always lets her know how much they love her. They love her no matter what she does. They understand that she isn't the way she wants to be. And this love and caring is never breeched even by tragic events.
I think "If I forget, You Remember" should be on every shelf of every home who has a parent or grandparent living there. When that time comes, to us all, that time when we realize we are old, it would be nice to know that your children could read a copy of "If I forget, You Remember".

P.S. My favorite color is spring-green--for those who have read
the book.

Very Realistic and a Good Read for Upper Elementary.......2000-04-11
As a Principal of a K-6 Elementary I read this book with 4th,5th and 6th graders as part of a "Principal's Book Talk" program. This was a very realistic and moving book for this age group. They related to a lot of the problems that the main character went through. They could easily relate to the bullies and the main character's problems she faced with trying to fit in. We really enjoyed the way the author describes the character's feelings and thoughts that the events touched in her. I thought this was a great book to share with this age group because of the situations and experiences they face on a daily basis. Her relationship with her grandmother was very touching. If you are a student, teacher, or parent, this would be a great book to share with others.
Adolescents Appreicating Adults.......2000-02-04
Elyse faces many changes over her summer vacation from sixth to seventh grade. Her grandmother develops Alzheimer's, her widowed mother begins dating and Elyse develops a crush. In the midst of seemingly disastrous situation she faces, Elyse finds out who she really is when begins to pursue a career in writing. She discovers how important is to support and trust friends and family members. The novel encompasses themes of loss, sacrifice, priorities and family unity. Those who enjoy reading about the changes a pre-teen girl faces, and are interested in learning about Alzheimer's will want to read this book.
A Touching, Emotional Story!.......1999-07-26
The story of a girl dealing not only with the problems faced by most her age, but also her grandmother's medical condition, this book has some very meaningful lessons to share. Despite an unfinished ending , you will probably smile and cry at the same time. It is a wonderful book for anyone experiencing the effects of a loved one's battle with Alzheimer's disease.
