Book Description
Church-goer.Family friend.All-American boy.Murderer.Ken Register, much to the shock of the small town of Conway, South Carolina, was all of these things.Clean-cut, polite to a fault, and respectful of elders, Ken was the kind of guy parents wanted their daughters to date. But only months after a seventeen-year-old girl's brutal murder, the residents of Conway were in for another surprise: that the killer was one of their own.Ken and Crystal Todd were "best friends," and had even briefly dated. When Crystal's hideously gutted body was found near the woods of Conway, Ken checked in every day to console Crystal's mother and inquire about the murder investigation.Ken was practically the last person anyone would suspect.Until he started acting nervous and suspicious, afraid he would be "framed" for Crystal's murder. And until DNA tests confirmed that he was indeed the man who repeatedly raped and stabbed Crystal Todd, then left her mutilated body in a nearby ditch.Discover, through fascinating first-person accounts: the tortured Southern son who committed murder; the courageous detective determined to break the case; the broken mother who lost her only child; and the disbelieving parents who, to this day, defend their son's innocence.AUTHORBIO: BILLY HILLS is Associate Professor of Psychology at Coastal Carolina University.DALE HUDSON is a successful businessman. Both authors, life-long residents of South Carolina, spent nearly five years researching for this book.

Horrible Story - Not A Great Book.......2007-05-03
I purchased this book because of the strong reviews. Perhaps the other reviewers have not read a lot of true crime, because there was nothing special about this. Basically, it was a newspaper article extended with a few more facts to make a book. The story is horrifying, but you never really learn much about the people.
Well written, but otherwise average........2007-03-23
An Hour To Kill is the story of a brutal murder in a small South Carolina town. As an avid reader of true crime, I have mixed feelings about the book. There are a number of negatives: The center picture section is weak. There is NO decent picture of the victim, Crystal Todd, merely a tiny blurred picture of her on her tombstone. As she was a high school senior, it should have been relatively easy to at least get a yearbook picture. Also, for no other possible reason than to fill up the section there are pictures of Mickey Spillane and his wife! These people really have nothing to do with the book, except as an afterthought, not even appearing in the book until the last few pages.
There is no depth given to the main characters, Ken Register and Crystal Todd. Due to a lack of information or interest, the authors present them as little more than props around which to base the story of the arrest and trial. This is especially poorly done with Crystal. She is the victim of a brutal murder and we learn virtually nothing about her except that her mother loved her.
There does not seem to have been much in depth research in the writing of this book, which would have helped as the crime is not in itself really that interesting or unusual, except for its sheer brutality,
This book could have been a total true crime trasher due to the serious faults listed above, but it is saved by the authors' narrative abilities.
The writing is crisp and clean. It is for the most part reportorial in nature, and avoids the trap fallen into by lesser true-crime writers, of feeling that they must express their own opinions of the crime. Consequently they do not impose their own personalities on the story, which in my opinion is almost always undesirable in a true crime book. The writers, Hudson and Hills, move the story along briskly and professionally. Ultimately, An Hour To Kill is an easy read, but could have been much deeper.
By Golly, Jethro, I Think We Have Us A Murder On Our Hands Here.......2007-03-13
True crime is my genre; about the ONLY thing I read. And in many years of reading this genre, I have read many, many books whose setting was in the South, even the deep south Georgia, but I have NEVER run across authors who did such an excellent job (said tongue in cheek)of making the "characters" out to be such hillbillies. Living in a small, southern town myself, I can say this: sure, we have some odd sayings and our own dialect; but, come on, do you have to play on it? Even though I speak "the language" of these people, I still had a very difficult time reading it.
And this has to be the only true crime book I've read to date that included photos, but not any clear photos of the victim or the accused. Readers are provided with a grainy photo atop her headstone, taken at a distance of the victim and one side view photo taken of the accused. But, hey, there is a clear photo of Mickey Spillane and his wife, Jane, for your enjoyment! Go figure!
Throw in that this book plays on the fact that Crystal Faye Todd was murdered by her best friend Ken Register, but we're not given much background information on neither them nor their families; only that they had all been life long friends. Btw, how is that Ken Register was her best friend, but she had refused to date him and told her mother it was because he wanted sex all the time and smelled badly? Doesn't really sound like best friend material but, amazingly, Bonnie Faye Todd considers him as someone she can lean on and trust.
However, if a reader can wade through all that mess, there is a good argument here for the conviction. It was based mainly on past actions of the defendant and primitive use of DNA. Quite frankly, the jury, in my opinion, didn't have enough evidence to convict but read it and form your own opinion. Just plan on having Jethro's voice in your head while you do!
Terrific Story.......2006-03-03
I first read Dale Hudson's Dance of Death, then purchase An Hour To Kill. Both books are superb. They both kept me spellbound and glued to my seat. My only criticism is that they weren't longer, as I read them far too quickly and was mad at myself for doing so. I look forward to reading his next book.
Excellent non-fiction writing.......2005-12-03
This non-fiction story is a thriller to read. It's the sort of writing you expect in a work of fiction, but when you realize that this really did happen, then you want to congratulate the authors for their research and prose. Basically, what I'm saying, is this piece of work is well done.
It's hard to think of a nice Christian boy living in a small town such as Conway, SC, committing such a heinous crime. But hey, the world is full of sickos and small towns are no exception. And yet, just how sick has our society become that a young man professing to be a devout Christian and, hits the church every time the doors open, can fool so many people? But DNA comes into play, even though it was just being introduced and some people doubted the results. I'm sure the parents of Ken Register don't want to think their son could be guilty of murdering his friend, and then cutting her to pieces like he did. This book is anything BUT boring and I do highly recommend it to non-fiction lovers.
Co-authors, Billy Hills (an Assoc. Prof. of Psychology) and Brad Hudson (a successful businessman) appear to be on their way to a successful writing career. Too bad they don't know the difference between SIT & SET and SITTING & SETTING, which were basically the only flaws I found in the story. Wonder why their editor didn't catch it.

Customer Reviews:
Sharyn McCrumb - Saint Dale.......2007-07-26
Sharyn McCrumb is one of my favorite writers from "Zombies of the Gene Pool" to "Frankie and Johnny", I have enjoyed everything she has written. This is a different Sharyn McCrumb but writing with the same excellent story telling ability she is known for. She does her wonderful job of making you know her cast of characters and care about what happens to them. I learned a lot about NASCAR along the way. I am not a fan but I am familiar with the drivers and some little knowledge about how it works, but you could know nothing about NASCAR and still enjoy this book. I like a book the educates me as well as entertains me and this one did just that. I couldn't put it down and was sorry when it ended. Fans of NASCAR and fans of Nora Bonesteel and fans of Sharyn McCrumb will all enjoy this book.
Nascar fans may know what's going on, but not the rest of us.......2007-07-12
This book may be for Nascar fans, but for those reading it to find out what Nascar is all about, it isn't very informative. If you read it to try to learn abut Nascar, it won't help you. If you read it like any other novel with Nascar as a backdrop to stories about a bus-load of characters, it might be okay. It isn't great for either.
Fun read.......2007-05-13
This is a fun stroll through Nascar history with interesting, profane references to all concerned. If you love Nascar you will love this...if you aren't familiar with Nascar lore, its an easy way to learn.....
Author does it all.......2006-12-19
I'm a fan of science fiction, NASCAR, and of Scottish descent.
What ties those together- the novels of Sharyn McCrumb. I have
not read any of the Ballad books but I will. What makes a book
good is not the subject material but the craftsmanship of the
author. I am willing to spend my time reading a book I wouldn't
ordinarily because I trust that it will be an enjoyable
experience. St. Dale was all I expected and more.
RM
A Pilgrimage for Today.......2006-07-08
Not interested in NASCAR? Neither was I, but I had read and liked some of McCrumb's books, so I tried it -- and was hooked. This is the story of how a diverse group of pilgrims, met to honor a seemingly unlikely "saint," make spiritual journeys of their own and learn to help one another along. The NASCAR background is well done and entertaining, but not obtrusive. You can read and enjoy this book, as I did, without knowing or caring anything about auto racing. (Although -- truth in advertising here -- it helped cause me to *get* interested.) But this is not "a book about NASCAR"; it is a book which uses NASCAR as a background, as the "Canterbury Tales" is not "a book about travel in medieval England."
By the way, there is a scene in the paperback edition which is not in the (first) hardback edition, and I think it is a good addition, since it fleshes out a plot line which was almost invisible in the hardback edition.
Book Description
On Easter Sunday, multimillionaire Dale Ewell, his wife, and 24-year-old daughter were gunned down one by one as they returned home from their beach house. The stone-cold killer waited on a sheet of plastic to avoid leaving clues and calmly retrieved all the bullet casings before leaving the house of blood. The Ewells' tony Fresno community was shocked by the grisly murder of the socially prominent family. Only the son, handsome 21 year-old Dana, seemed strangely unaffected except for his outrage at not receiving his slaughtered family's entire multimillion-dollar fortune immediately.Although the father Dale Ewell, was a ruthless businessman with a score of enemies, Detective John Souza immediately suspected the spoiled son with the new airplane and the Armani suits. But the brilliant college student sneered at the veteran investiagtor's efforts and appeared to have an airtight alibi. But Souza knew there has to be a hole and when he found it he would bring a cold-blooded killer to justice.
Customer Reviews:
Greed.......2004-03-28
Not well-written but entertaining enough. Good for a time when you want a quick read. Author has a tendency to ramble at some spots. There are so many better books in this genre that I would probably recommend passing on this one.
Read Hanadel's book instead.......2003-09-17
I read both of the books on the Ewell murders, and this one the poorer by a long shot. It is full of errors and typos, and it indulges in hyperbole about how Dana Ewell's entire generation lacks morals and the such. In short, it's very poorly written. Hanadel's books covers all the same material and a lot more in a far clearer exposition.
Interesting, but flawed.......2002-11-13
This book provides an interesting look into the investigation of an unthinkable crime, but it also has mistakes. Some can be attributed to typographical errors, but editing should have picked these up. One discrepancy in particular should have sent alarm bells off in any reader that the manuscript needed more attention because this error has no logical explanation. After finishing this book, I looked up the result of the case--a verdict was reached about six months after its publication--to see if the rush to publish had also colored the facts. It seems that the major mistake was in not taking enough time to ensure quality writing throughout.
Interesting.........2001-08-14
I read this book a few years ago while on vacation. It gripped my attention, because like the adage once said,"Money is the root of all evil." No kidding! The story of a young man named Dana, so obsessed with his family's fortune, that he was willing to "get rid of" them to inherit the fortune. If that was not bad enough, attempted to make the murder look like a robbery-gone-bad. {Bad Idea: Plenty of valuables were left behind: Guns, jewelry, etc.} Assuming that he would get away with the "perfect crime", he soon disovers that it backfires. Not only do the police suspect him, but they are hot on his trail. They have his pager, and cellular phone "cloned" as well as the local payphone that was used "tapped." {In order to make himself look as though he had nothing to do with the crime, he kept a receipt for a card and some candy that he had bought from a grocery store that he paid with his Amex card. I guess he was trying to form a paper trail.} One detective was immediately suspicious: Who keeps receipts for a $2.00+ some purchase? Overall, an interesting read.
Common problem in America - parents spoiling kids.......1999-09-20
The author describes the two suspects well. He details their relationship and activities following the murders. A second book by Smith should follow. Didn't anyone see Joel's vehicle parked around the block, the day of the murders? We need to know the final judicial outcome. Also, I would like to know how this has affected the girlfriends of Dana and Joel. Did Dana or Joel ever learn what remorse is?
Smith describes Dana as being overindulged with a Mercedes, etc. Since his mother had a "career", she supplied Dana with all kinds of money. It obviously was the wrong kind of attention any child needs. Although, Dana Ewell made the ultimate "choice" to do wrong.

Mount St. Helens: The Eruption and Recovery of a Volcano
ASIN: 0387238506 |
Book Description
The eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980, had a momentous impact on the fungal, plant, animal, and human life from the mountain to the far reaches of the explosion's ash cloud and mudflows. Although this intense natural event caused loss of substantial life and property, it also created a unique opportunity to examine a huge disturbance of natural systems and their subsequent responses. Based on one of the most studied areas of volcanic activity, this book synthesizes the ecological research that has been conducted for twenty-five years since the eruption. Research from geology as well as plant and animal ecology has been integrated in this unprecedented look at the complex interactions of biological and physical systems in the response of the volcanic landscape. Lessons from the volcano inform our larger understanding of ecosystem disturbances, natural processes, and the impact of land-use practices. Included are results of significant and long-term research on vegetation, mycorrhizae, plant and animal interactions, arthropods, amphibians, mammals, fish, lakes, nutrient cycling, geomorphology, and environmental management. This comprehensive account will be of value to those interested in natural history, ecology, disturbance, conservation biology, limnology, geoscience, and land management. Questions about what actually happens when a volcano erupts, what the immediate and long-term dangers are, and how life reasserts itself in the environment are discussed in full detail.

Book Description
Audrey Johnson was an observer and participant in the Victoria arts scene for nearly forty years. As a columnist for the Victoria Times and then the Times-Colonist, she covered the development of the arts from a unique vantage point. Intimately involved with the creation of the Langham Court Theatre, the New Bastion, the Phoenix Theatre and the Pacific Opera Society, Audrey knew the characters, the secrets, and the behind-the-scenes politics. This book is a personal history of the contemporary arts scene in Victoria and how it evolved. It looks at the ups and downs of the arts-theatre, music, visual arts and dance-in what was a critical time in Victoria's emergence as a city.

Studies in Eastern Asia Minor.......2007-07-20
Having an understanding of the cities in Eastern Asia Minor during the first century of the Christian church is definitely helped by reading Ramsay's book. He discusses the culture, religion and geography of the cities that Paul visited during the first missionary journey. Recommended for anyone needing a better understanding of Eastern Asia Minor during the first century of the Apostles.

Wonderful book!!!.......2007-05-01
I've never read any 1700's books before and I have to say how much I LOVED this book! It starts out wonderful and just keeps building! I didn't like the ending too well, but the store it's self makes up for it. It is a wonderful book and I hope that anyone who is looking for a romance finds this book just as good!
Can't put it down.......2007-04-09
Ride the Fire
Pamela Clare
Reviewer Pamela Ackerson (author Home of the Braves trilogy) A historical fiction at its best. Pamela Clare does not disappoint the reader at all. Another can't put it down, leave me alone I'm reading novel.
A Keeper For Me.......2007-02-13
I wasn't sure if I would like this book or not, although the plot appealed to me. The first scene in the book was a bit too much for me, though, and I couldn't really read it because it was so graphic and intense.
But I didn't let that keep me from reading the rest of the book and I am glad that I did because I found that I really enjoyed it. I really loved Nicholas and Bethie and found that I really cared what happened to them. And who wouldn't want a man like Nicholas? He was always so protective of Bethie and always put her and her needs first. I also liked him because he wasn't at all arrogant and wasn't afraid to kick butt when he needed too. I also loved how he constantly pushed Captain Ecuyer's buttons while they were at the Fort and found myself laughing at those scenes.
Finally, I liked how Bethie's tormenters got what they deserved.
My only quibble other than the opening scene is that the author could have toned down the love scenes just a little bit; but at least they didn't overwhelm the book.
I didn't know this book was part of a series until I read some of the other reviews. I don't like reading books that are in a series since you have to read ALL the previous ones before you can read this one, otherwise, you're missing something. But with this book, I never got that impression and felt that it was a great stand-alone book.
I really recommend this book and it is definetely going on my keeper shelf.
A terrific book.......2007-01-11
Pamela Clare's Ride of Fire is well worth reading. The characterization is far above the usual standard for romance. The plot is fast moving and Clare manages to maintain both sexual and emotional tension throughout.
But what I liked best in this book was its historical context. It is set at the end of the French Indian War. When the French were defeated, Native Americans allies of the French, such as the Wyandot, were left without European support against the English. The English exploited them mercilessly, charging outrageous prices for trade goods. Settlers and speculators illegally poured into Native Americans lands. During the seven years of the war, the French had encouraged their Native Americans allies to butcher English settlers. After the war, furious with the English, they continued their brutal ways. It was a turbulent time. Clare's protagonists, an English soldier and an illegal settler, are caught up in the turmoil.
Clare attempts a realistic picture of the Native Americans - particularly the Wyandot (Northern Iroquois). They desperately tried to defend their land against the technologically superior English. Much less sympathetically, however, they inflicted terrible torture on their enemies. Although Native Americans were actually far more multifaceted, at least Clare tries to show that there were good and bad aspects to Native Americans, as there are to all people.
Clare also portrays English imperfections. Some are racist and classist. In addition, some were be crueler than the Wyandot. She relates an actual incident, which occurred during the siege of Fort Pitt. Capt. Ecuyer gave two chiefs 2 blankets and a handkerchief as a present. Some present. Smallpox patients had used them! Clare does not tell you that the Captain was following orders from his commander, General Amherst.
In addition to the big historical picture, I loved all the little historical details in this book, particularly of the frontier farm. I am fascinated by how people did things without running water, electricity, telephones, cars, and computers. As usual, the medical details are portrayed as far more sanitary and effective than they actually were. Authors just cannot leave a wound dirty and bind it with an old, dirty rag. But that is what they did in those days!
Even if you are not interested in history, I still heartily recommend this book. It is a well-written engrossing story.
The best!!!.......2007-01-05
This is by far her best book. Nicholas is a man any woman would love to have for her own; handsome, sexy, sensitive to his womans' needs, fears, wants....yummy. Simply the best I have read by her. It's hard to to find a better hero than this one. A keeper!

Green with Envy.......2005-09-11
I have always been very jealous of Amanda's writing ability. Her poetry has always touched my soul. But when I read this book Jealosy turned to Envy. I only wish I could write half as well as she. Her words are perfect. Her writing very emotional and directed. I absolutely loved it! Awesome!
A Privilege to have known her.......2005-08-28
A wonderful and very powerful book by an equally wonderful and powerful person. One thing I will say is that you have to let her work grow on you. It is not something you will necessarily understand on the first read, however, given time and thought, it will open your mind in ways that no other poetry can. On a side note, Amanda, this is your old friend Matt from Eastern. I'm sorry to have to communicate this way, for when you called me and left a message back in February of this year, I did not have the courage to call you back. And for that I am sorry. I hope you read this and contact me, because I'd love to hear from you. It has been so long. Please email me at mattcrouch@juno.com or IM me at mattwifflepro. Again, sorry to have to attempt to contact you this way, but I lost your number when I got my new cell phone and I don't have your email address for some reason. Sorry again.
Intense.......2004-12-20
I was required to read this book by a friend who lives in Connecticut. She knew the author and believed she was the most intense, woman she had ever met. She said she and I had a lot in common and that I would benefit from reading the poems of such a "deep" woman. After reading many of the poems, I can say this woman is INTENSE. She has a lot of power behind her. And the book is definately bold and "in your face". I know my friend said the author was 21 or 22 when she wrote the book but I have a hard time beleiving how that is possible. This woman has led a experienced life. An awesome view of life written by a women who knows how to put her thoughts on paper.I look forward to reading more of Amanda Suddeth/Pollard.
Offensive.......2004-03-06
The Hard Ride is a fitting title for this book. It is apparent that the author has been to "hell" and back. Her book is filled with opinions of life, good, bad, and EXTREMELY offensive. She will certainly get your blood flowing. I read this book as a dare, from a friend who thought it was great, but has very different taste than I do. I can honestly say, I was offended by much of it, but my friends who have read it really enjoyed it. I guess it is art, and art is subjective... Read it at your own risk.
Electric.......2004-03-06
I enjoyed this book in it's entirety. There is a poem in this book entitled, "REGRET" if you only read one poem again in your life...You have to read this one. Only three lines long, it is POWERFUL. This woman has seen life in a way I could have never imagined existed. I recommend this book to everyone who likes to learn from a different point of view.. Because Mrs. Suddeth/Pollard is creative, enlightening, and VERY different.

Re: A history of the LA County Fire Department.......2001-06-14
I thoroughly enjoyed this reading this book which reflects in words and pictures a chronology and history of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. I was impressed by the number of historic photo's that help to bring the entire work to life. I believe that anyone reading this book will gain an appreciation of the role the LA County Fire Department has played during the last century in minimizing the impact of many potentially devastating fires in the S. California area.
I was disappointed........1999-11-08
This book was unfortunately a disappointment. The pictures were pretty cool, but the writing was weak. I heard good stuff about the book, but I was really disappointed.
