In Stirling's bestselling Island in the Sea of Time, modern Nantucket found itself trapped in the Bronze Age. In the sequel, Against the Tide of Years, the renegade William Walker forges a dangerous alliance with the ancient Greek kings Agamemnon and Odysseus; Commodore Marian Alston faces terrible sea storms and cannon-armed Phoenician ships in an anachronistic Age of Sail; and the outnumbered Nantucketers race Walker to make contact with the Babylonian Empire.
Of course this ambitious, action-packed series is perfect for time-travel, alternate-history, and military-SF fans. But epic-fantasy readers, Burroughs and Haggard fans desiring a modern update of the lost-civilization adventure novel, and anyone who ever read Patrick O'Brian for the terrific sea-battles will enjoy it as well. --Cynthia Ward
Book Description
Against The Tide Of Years continues the adventures of the Nantucket residents who have been transported through time to the Bronze Age. In the years since their arrival, the fledging Republic of Nantucket has strived to better the primitive world in which they now exist. Their prime concerns are establishing a constitution and handling the waves of immigrants from the British Isles. But a renegade time traveler plans his own future by forging an empire for himself based on conquest by modern technology. The Republic has no alternative but to face the inevitable war brought on by one of their own....
Praise for Island In The Sea Of Time:
"...one of the best time/travel alternate history stories I've ever read, period. Stirling combines complex, believable characters, meticulous research, and a fascinating setup to produce a book you won't want to--and won't be able to--put down." --Harry Turtledove, bestselling author of Guns of the South
"...unquestionably Steve Stirling's best work to date, a page-turner that is certain to win the author legions of new readers and fans. I wouldn't be surprised to see it on a few awards ballots either." --George R. R. Martin, author of A Game of Thrones
"A well thought-out time travel scenario with a few interesting differences from most books in the genre." --Kliatt
"Stirling has surpassed his previous work in the creation of a compelling cast of characters and does a fine job of conveying both a sense of loss and hope." --Science Fiction Chronicle
Customer Reviews:
Alternative History for History Buffs.......2005-09-07
A fun read for those who are interested in History of Civilization. It reminded me of the old Saturday Night Live skit, "What if Sparticus had an airplane". The writer obviously did his research, especially into indo-earopean languages.
The Middle Child.......2005-01-26
This was entertaining, the research was extensive, the antagonists were exhausting and the protagonists were ethical to a fault (can ethics be a fault?). Like all second children this one had issues. There were lots of loose ends to be resolved in the next book, a "filler" feel to some of it as story lines were beefed up for the climax and that wonderful middle book introspection by the main characters as some of them got to take a breathe and consider their future. That said, there were some great battles, some exciting new plot lines and bunches and bunches of reasons to grab the next book and see what happens. My only suggestion... PROVIDE A MAP. Holy cow, we're all over the world here and I get confused easily.
It's the 2nd of a Trilogy.......2004-09-12
As with the previous book in the series, intriguing and well written. A bit of a Return of the Jedi bit here- things don't finish in this novel (unlike the first one), and not everything is going well for the heroes at the end of the book. You have to have the 3rd in the trilogy at the ready. Stirling again makes you interested in the characters and their lives. He balances many different plotlines and characters very neatly. His research is precise and accurate. And he provides a lot of anthropology and cultural development- not just battles and action. I recommend this book for those who have started the series, for they won't be disappointed. I recommend this series for those who've not yet started it, as it is excellent alternative history.
Some minor drawbacks: the time schema confusing. At the beginning of every chapter are a number of dates, with months and years, some in parenthesis, and I couldn't really figure out what the author was trying to communicate with this. Also for some strange reason there's no Israel. Although history indicates at this time that Samuel is wandering around as a prophet (1200 BC), and the empire of David and Solomon have already occurred, for some reason Stirling has decided that Moses is just about now leaving Egypt. But since the entire Middle East is thrown into turmoil in this book, perhaps that whole event doesn't happen, including the Jewish nation, the oppression by the Romans, Jesus . . . And the book is less recommendable than it would be otherwise do to a number of rather strange, highly aberrant gratuitous sex scenes.
Weaker middle book in great series.......2003-10-02
Inexplicably cast back into the Bronze Age, the New England island of Nantucket is attempting to preserve modern technology and democratic traditions, but it isn't easy. Although Nantucket and its proto-British allies defeated the renegade Walker in his first attempt to set up a kingdom of his own, Walker has escapted to Myceanian Greece where he is hobnobbing with Agamemnon and the wily Odysseus. His ally in Phoenecian Spain, is also adapting modern technology and poses a threat to the Island republic. New allies are critical and the Island turns to Babylon. After battling the Assyrians, the epic battle heads toward modern-Turkey--toward Troy.
In the meantime, back in North America, Nantucket authorizes a Lewis and Clark-like exploration of the largely depopulated continent, and Nantucket engineers experiment with breech-loading rifles to replace the flintlocks that gave them initial advantage over their opponents.
AGAINST THE TIDE OF YEARS is the second book in a trilogy following the exploits of the residents of Nantucket. No longer fighting for their lves on a daily basis, Nantucket has used its technology to carve out a protectorate. Unlike Walker, who provides technoogy broadly to his people, Nantucket hoards its technological advantage using 'locals' as spear-catchers for the most part, with a stiffening of regular troops behind them.
A lot that made the first book in the series so powerful is lacking by the timeframe in this second novel. The island is rich, has adapted much of its technology to available resources, and is able to use all of its thousands of residents to further its military and economic goals. Walker, with his handful of renegades, becomes more admirable than an enemy. I sense that author S. M. Stirling has ambiguous feelings about Walker himself. Although his relationship with the sadistic Alice Hong and his tendency to rape and enslave keep him on the evil side, the man is spreading technology that Nantucket hoards, is developing close friendships with the locals (beyond the marriage to local nobility-friendships that seem Nantucket's only way of going local), and is honorable in his own way. Indeed, AGAINST THE TIDE OF YEARS comes alive largely when Walker is on the stage.
Middle books are hard, and it would be hard to write a sequel to the powerful ISLAND. With plenty of action, a number of characters familiar to everyone who's ever read Homer, and well researched and detailed technology introduction, AGAINST THE TIDE OF YEARS is certainly worth reading.
Yawn.......2002-10-24
I like the premise, but this book drags on way too long...

Affaire Royale
She'd escaped -- but she'd lost her memory and her kidnappers were still on the loose. Now Princess Gabriella needed a protector fast, and brash American Reeve MacGee was the perfect man for the job. The handsome ex-policeman could handle absolutely anything -- except falling in love with the stunning, vulnerable woman in his care.
Command Performance
Years ago she'd had a momentary schoolgirl crush on Prince Alexander, who was powerful, reserved, compelling, but he'd clearly disapproved of her. Now Eve Hamilton was every inch a woman, and Alex discovered he wanted to show her that he was all she could ever want in a man . . .

Beautiful...........2007-06-26
my first Nora Roberts novels..
Affaire Royale and Command Performance has changed my viewpoint of Romance Novels. I really appreciated Roberts' way of choosing the right words for every little thing, taking the time for readers to appreciate th most important moments in the stories. Personally, the frequent use of words in French shook my heart...
I had checked out these books from the public library at first, and I've placed my order on Affaire Royale, Command Performance, Playboy Prince, and Cordina's Crown Jewel.
Although I found Playboy Prince to be a little bit less attractive to me, I was satisfied with the thrills as well as the love between the playboy prince and mysterious spy, Lady Hannah.
I recommend reading all three. ENJOY!
Despite all of the excitement.......2006-06-13
Despite all of the excitement of kidnappings, royalty, and terroizes it didn't hide the fact the charactors were dull. There was nothing exciting or special or even memerable about any of the charactors.
Eeex-leecitly deelightful. Reminds me o Ireland.......2006-06-10
Well, ma wife lurves Nora Robersta nd beign the inteligent man I am, I thought to my self that I would read some high class mystery. By the end of the book I was proud of maself because it sure ta'int easy, readin' all them hard words like: "heavin" and "tumblin passionately".
wHen i done looked them up in ter dictionar-ee i was appaled. them words were too blasphemous ter be read by me little wifey. and by me too. but i berlieve in freedom o speech so i reads on.
princesss gabie was a mighty fine little duckie. them big tawnie eyes.no wonder reeve -- a farmer likes me self-- could not resist them tiara. armand was a good daddy protecting his daughter, but i guess reeve wanted them hands on his woman. alexander i had no respect for.fightin with the lady eve in fencin'. that tain't princly at all.
Thats why eye lurve reeve. he is a farm boy likes myself and it did me heart proud to see them strong babies he and princess Gina will make ter gether.
buy this book, but remember to whiteout them swear words.
Surprisingly disappointed.......2006-05-17
Ususally I love Nora Roberts involving and realistic literary style. She has a way of making situaiton seem plausible and characters relatable and real. I am particularly fond of her incredibly sense of realistic and witty dialogue. And yet this book left me feeling flat and a little disappointed.
While this was a reprint and combination of two earlier works I felt that a little re-editing to make up for lacking skill wouldn't have been amiss. the second story of Alexander and Eve was the one I though posed the most promise and yet the characters were flat, lack luster and the situation completely unbeleivable. The smoking and the misunderstanding that continue on and on I could handle. It was the poor writing, the plot that wasn't really thought out and the lack of any truely interesting secondary characters. Add to that references to previous works in the series that due more to clutter the work than anything else.
I was just surprisingly disappointed with this work. The lack of imagination and skill shown in Roberts later books left me feeling cheated.
Disappointed........2006-03-22
I've always been a big fan of Nora Roberts, but these two books are really lame. The other reviewers synopsized the plots, so I won't reiterate, but there were several things about these books that really bothered me...first, the time line. Just when in history do these books take place? Eve pecks around on a computer and listens to CD's, so the seven year lapse from the first book to the second must put it sometime more current. However, the next installment which chronicles the affaires d'amour of Prince Bennett must obviously take place far into the future. If one reads the family tree at the beginning of the book, then one knows that Brie and Reeve's children marry and have children of their own...most confusing. The second thing that really bugged me was the fact that the men in this book were ALL smokers and a lot of descriptive narrative revolved around their disgusting smoking habits. Ms. Roberts even went as far as to describe an ashtray full of butts. Was this necessary? Every love scene in the book was ruined for me, as I couldn't forget that both Reeve's and Alex's breath must have been absolutely repulsive. I realize that these books are reprints of older stories, but I really wish Ms. Roberts had edited nicotine addiction out of the personalities of the heroes...the stories would not have suffered.

And working in rural Vermont for archaeologist Delaney Caine -- devastatingly handsome, utterly cantankerous -- offered the perfect refuge. Customer Reviews:
Royal Kingdom of Dreams.......2007-08-14
To me, Cordina's Royal Family is the best of Nora Robert's series. I have read other of her series, but none have the magic that I found in the Royal Cordina Family. I loved each character: Bennett, Camilla, Alex, Eve, Gabriella, Hannah and Reeves. Somehow this series stirs the fairy tale mystery that exists in all of us. I really wish Ms. Roberts would continue with the Cordina family series. As a talented and skillful author, she should be able to find a way! What about Bennet and Hannah"s wedding? To me, that would be wonderful to read! I want more of that wonderful family!
hopless romantics will love it........2006-08-16
If you are a hopeless romantic, like stories about princes and princesses and love a classic ending. Then you will enjoy this book. I really like the fact that Hannah was a heroine but Bennett also took some credit. Very entertaining.
Where's the Juice?.......2006-08-06
Based on the recent recommendation by a Stephen King article in Entertainment Weekly, I purchased this book expecting to read some really good romance writing. The writing lack depth, dimension, and offered zero emotional skill, and after struggling through the first 100 pages, I threw the book away. So much for Stephen King's opinion - although he's written so really good things, he's also put out a lot of mediorce work too. If you want some juicy romance as well as good storytelling, read Susan Carroll's "The Dark Queen", The Courtesan" and "The Silver Rose"
Trilogy. Once I read these I went back and purchased Carroll's earlier works, all with underserved tacky covers I might add, but the writing is fun and her heroes are "broad shouldered with powerful thighs and sensuous mouths" etc. Diane Galbaldon (could be incorrect spelling) writes well with very interesting characters and story lines but too sexually violent for my taste.
Not her best novel, probably, but I still couldn't put the book down..........2006-07-17
I read all four stories over four days and I will agree that these are not her best, but still I laugh and I cried and I gasped out loud and was generally entertained. From the moment I started reading I could not put the book down and I found myself transported to royal Cordina were a family loves one another and finds love and passion while fighting terriorists. Still liked it a lot.
Two Stars-Spoilers follow.......2006-06-24
After being disappointed in reading Gabriella & Alexander, I still tried Bennett & Camilla and was still disappointed. Once again there was a lot of things happen but it felt like they were trying to destract you from the charactors. I didn't like Bennett at all. Starting with his name and it went down from there. His treatment of Hannah after learning her true idenity comented my hate. I wished Hannah would have stabbed him with a knife. I did however enjoy Hannah thoroughly all of her working with the terrorities in order to bring them down was very exciting. It would have been fun to see series on Hannah's work. Now on to Camilla. Camilla was not a very exciting charactor she was very dull. Her beau Delaney was all right until he got all hung up on her lying about being a princess when he was lying about his own title. Its calling the kettle black and makes me lose all respect and like for the charactor.
