Book Description
Van der Post’s incomparable knowledge of Africa illuminates this epic novel, set near the Kalahari Desert, about a boy on the verge of manhood, his experiences with the wonder and mystery of a still-primitive land, and his secret friendship with the Bushman whose life he saves. The narrative of A Story like the Wind continues in A Far-Off Place.

A Story Like the Wind.......2006-02-27
This is one of my favorite novels of all-time, together with its sequel A Far-Off Place. It's a moving story, beautifully written, and full of the wisdom that I do not myself possess -- but wish I did. I loved it when I first read it in my youth, and I love it still as my years advance. It's a great book.
a story like the slug.......2005-08-29
this story is nothing like the wind. this book could be good if he cut out more of the details and and wrote more about what is actually happening he has to detail it so much teach chapter could be 12-16 pages long.
One of my favorites..........2004-06-10
This beautiful book succeeds on many different levels. Set in Africa in the early 20th century, the lyrical prose, splendid descriptions and fully-fleshed characters allow the book to transcend a relatively thin plot line. It is the coming-of-age story of both the young male central character, and of the continent of Africa herself. Savor and re-read it--its pensive beauty and spirituality captures me every time.
No..........2004-03-20
unless you count the author's long-windedness, this story is nothing like the wind.
If you're interested in the Bushmen, or if you're simply looking for a good read, you'd be far better served by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas's _The_Harmless_People_ -- her account of actually living with Bushmen in the Kalahari in the early 1950s. (And the later editions include an epilogue, written in the 1980s, in which she has telling things to say about the film "The Gods Must Be Crazy" and other popular depictions of Bushmen culture.)
The book i go back to on rainy days.......2003-12-05
A Story Like the Wind is an amazing snapshot of africa told through the eyes of francois, a young boy whose world revolves around his dog and the bush. It joins a long line of stories of white men in Africa but is particularly notable for the quality of the writing. The story can occasionally move slowly, weighed down by the beauty of Van Der Posts descriptions, but in general, this is one of those books that you become so deeply immersed in, you never want it to end. A Story Like the Wind is better than A Far Off Place (The sequel, also the title of an aweful movie based on the books), but read both of them if you like the first one. If you're interested in nonfiction, you may also want to investigate Van der Post's other work.

Saddle up for a ride with the Pony Express.......2004-06-01
Join Pony Express rider Johnny Free and his pony JennySoo as they deliver the mail. This picture book tells the story of a nights ride where Johnny and JennySoo meet up with seven Paiute warriors. Read this book to find out how they escape them.
The oil paintings in the book were really pretty. I like the story. It kept the readers attention and kept you wondering what was going to happen nest.
We recommend this book to for adult and children to share together to learn more about the Pony Express. It's a great history lesson. The story it's self is fiction but on the last page the author gives us some background on the real Pony Express.

Book Description
Set in Somalia just after its independence in the 1960s, Horses Like the Wind and Other Stories of Africa is a collection of nine short stories that paint vivid portraits of the many different lives that intertwine along the Horn of Africa. A ruthless horse dealer comes up against the best tracker in the Somali army; transplanted Italian farmers look to a future of stark disintegration as they struggle to hold on to their lands and their families; gutsy American women attempt to establish lives of their own in the remote East African desert; and a beggar and an idealist meet in a chance encounter on the steps of a Mogadishu bank, with mind-numbing consequences.
Based on the author's own time spent in East Africa, Horses Like the Wind is an evocative collection for the reader interested in Somalia's birth as a nation.

A lovely read.......2006-01-06
Anyone who has been to County Clare will enjoy this book (all the more if you have a trip planned in your future!), as will anyone interested in modern-day Ireland. The writing is delightful, honest, and inspired. My only complaint about the book is that I wanted it to be longer! The stories come from the experience of a Dubliner (read: life-long city person) moving his family to the far west coast of Ireland for a simpler life in the country. This would be a great gift to anyone who grew up in Ireland (or whose parents did!).

Fed My Reading Sweet Tooth!.......2007-08-15
If the book's calling out from the shelf every time you go to the dang store--pick it up! This is what I told myself after reading Lord of Temptation because for over a year I was tempted to buy Ms. Quinn's books. Guess my head was on cloud zero. This book gave me the warm fuzzies, the kind usually only a nice long bubble bath and some good chocolate can. Needless to say, I've already gone back to it for a second helping.
England, 1071. Dante Risande, Norman lord and lover extraordinaire, is in search of members of a Saxon resistance, who work to thwart King William's hold on England. While visiting Saxon noble Bryce Dermott's estate in Devonshire, he meets the lovely and enigmatic Gianelle, a servant. Not even the noble ladies present can turn his head, and Dante is determined to make the jaded woman his. When Dermott meets his maker, his brother seizes his chance to make Gianelle suffer, as he's always wanted her too. All but charged with her master's death, Dante steps in to protect her till a proper inquiry can begin. When he takes Gianelle and her best friend to his home, he begins and all out wooing of Gianelle and it's not long till both of them feel the unrestrained passion that has haunted them since their first meeting. Meanwhile, Dante must figure out if she can really be trusted all while carrying out the orders of his King. Keeping Gianelle safe is no easy task either. Not everything is as it appears and they'll have to wade through treachery, deceit and heartbreak before dreaming of happiness.
This is the kind of book that makes me want to reread it--immediately. Not only did I laugh my butt off at Gianelle's extra dry roasted sense of humor, I felt swept off my feet many times throughout. Dante Risande: great name, phenomenal hero material. He's haunted by the loss of a loved one, hounded by the resistance of a beautiful woman and he doesn't take crap from his enemies. Sexy doesn't begin to describe this proud, fierce and noble man. Gianelle was a fresh breeze of wit, poise and intelligence. She's got som major hang-ups due to family as well and when she slipped into her devious, child-like means of retribution, I was floored with laughter as well as sympathy for her. By no means is she a wilting willow though, quite the opposite. Never having been able to trust in men, her melting to Dante was one of the sweetest, and hottest, scenarios I've read in a while. The writing is so smooth, flowing wonderfully from one scene to the next with a good, solid pace that never left me wanting to put the book down. In fact, I couldn't and read it in about five hours. So, not the most complicated of storylines, but with a timeless, beautiful love story that more than filled my "ahhhh, giggle, sigh, sniffle, ahhhh" quota for the month. It seems as if it's part of a series, but in typical me fashion, I'm all out of order, but not out of sorts as a result--I reads just fine on its own though I'm reading her others as soon as possible. Wonderful book. Top ten keeper shelf material right here.
Lacked depth.......2007-05-02
It is a charming fantasy, to be redeemed from slavery by a handsome hero, who takes you to his castle, gives you a beautiful room, and fine clothes, then falls in love with you and marries you.
But for me, this story didn't ring true. Would a slave use lines like "You would rather have an eyelash-batting mindless twit in your lap than a woman who might challenge your precious ego"? Okay, it's a nice saucy line. But it just doesn't fit with the "abused slave" character. It was confusing that Gianelle's personality did not seem to match her background. She was too sophisticated, and to playful to be a slave. Her endless pranks were unlikely, and her redemption was too simple. For all her mistreatment, she didn't suffer.
Dante's character also seemed incomplete. There was no struggling with class distinctions, or marrying according to the will of the king, or for political or financial advantage. Or I should say, overcoming objections to marriage based on those concerns. It was too simple. See a girl, fall in love, get married.
I found the writing to be emotionally hollow, and skimmed over the second half of it.
Historical Romance - with great twists...........2007-03-12
Lord of Temptation by Paula Quinn is a romance novel based around England in 1071. Gianelle is a slave with lots of strong will. Gianelle is atempting to escape when Lord Dante spoils her escape. This book has mystery, evil men , romance and interesting historical storyline. Off to read more by this author.
Lord of Temptation.......2006-07-31
I finished reading Lord of Temptation last night and absolutely loved the book. Gia and Dante were fabulous. Totally believable characters that just grabbed your interest and held on to it the whole book.
I loved that Gia's characteristics and personality evolved in a believable way! You could feel her distrust of people in the beginning and the slow thaw when she found that people she met were genuinely good and happy. Those introductions to people who were happy with their lives gave her the canvas that she needed to relax her guard and let her soul emerge. She had so many personality traits that I loved, even when being so distrustful of the world. She was brave and stayed true to her friend. I loved her sense of humor!!! She also had a huge amount of love all bottled up inside of her and you gave her the perfect setting for that to come out and for her to become the person that she was meant to be.
As for Dante: A reformed rake who became able to focus and love only one deserving woman. Dante had such compassion and understanding of who she was even while lusting after her ~ and then his heart started to open up and let her in. He was tender - giving - unselfish - and totally HOT ....
Paula, I cannot wait to read more. As a total addict to Lynn Kurland I can honestly say that you are now rated right up there on the top shelf !!! I LOVED this book and look forward to reading more in the future.
Love sets her free in more ways than one -Excellent Period Romance!.......2006-07-07
Wow! I wasn't sure that Quinn could top the prequel Lord of Desire, but was I wrong! Lord of Temptation is excellent! Norman Lord Dante Risande rescues and buys slave/servant Gianelle, who is a murder suspect. He then brings her back to his home where he sets her free. Dante is extremely attracted and drawn to Gianelle, who resists not wanting to be one of his 'women'. The love story is excellent, along with plenty of action (murder/revenge) and some humor. LOD characters Brand and Brynna make appearances too. A very satisfying read.

Book Description
Temptation In The House Of The Lord is a lucid depiction of the love between an 11 year-old boy and a Roman Catholic Priest. Their meeting appears to be as much a part of parish life as it does a necessary expression of their destinies. Their relationship appropriately begins at an altar, a place where both sacrifice and worship take place. The years separating an 11 year-old boy and a 27 year-old priest seem to evaporate in the midst of the boy's longing to be understood, blessed and loved by a man and the priest's yearning to reclaim a severed part of his childhood. Both priest and boy carry a hunger that has not been fed by family or church. The boy is saturated with the rearing and influence of women. The priest is psychologically overwhelmed by church dogma and protocol. He is a young sensual man seeking warmth and contact while being imprisoned by a vow of celibacy that reduces him to a fugitive within his own heart.
The sensitivity and wounds of Father Ray Billings kneads the boy's psyche, pushing and pulling it away from borrowed values and beliefs while pressing it slowly and constantly toward what is instinctual and primal within the boy's soul. Forced to separate passion from spirit, Father Ray Billings succumbs to deviant expressions of his sensuality which inevitably place his beloved young friend at risk.
"Paul Dunion's Temptation in the House of the Lord is important to the understanding of Clerical Incest and is a real page burner."--John Lee, Author of The Flying Boy

"Temptation in the House of the Lord" - Good Read.......2004-11-30
I am so impressed with the way this book is written. In candidly sharing with us his complex relationship with Father Billings, I believe the author gives needed support and affirmation to the many survivors of emotional/sexual abuse by the clergy, and other abuse victims, as well. For those who have had to deal with the issues of shame, betrayal or anger turned against oneself, the book presents clearly the dynamics involved when a revered adult who wields all the power in a relationship lures a vulnerable innocent into an untenable situation. In reading it, I was even envious of the kind of mentoring the boy recieved from the priest, until I realized that ultimately it would result in a more painful betrayal. Still, the manner in which Paul Dunion depicted Falther Billings evoked an understanding and compassion from me for the man. I found myself liking the priest immensely but was saddened by his inner spirtual struggles while at the same time angered at his denial of the abuse perpetrated upon his young friend, and then others. Other childhood victims will easily relate to the issues of abdication of power, and inability to fully trust that can later be problematic to a survivor of emotional/sexual abuse. However, I believe this book will be insightful for any interested compassionate person.
Some Catholics, in reading the text, might disagree with some of the spirtual viewpoints embraced by the priest or author, yet be in agreement with others. In total, it presents a challenge to the church as to what can be done to adequately address the very real problems that may be inherent in the priesthood.
In the writing of this book, and in his chosen profession, I think that Paul Dunion has shown great courage and compassion for others. I applaud his ability to be open about his experiences so that other victims might, in the process of relating to and digesting it all, find a way to carry their wounds and achieve a measure of peace. In reaching for this peace,I hope survivors might remember that Jesus taught us all how to show love and compassion and how to "forgive the unforgiveable"
Full of depth.......2004-11-10
I recently read Temptation in the House of the Lord. Being of the Jewish faith, this book was a learning experience for me. The book treats the entire issue of Clerical incest very sensitively. This is not a book of pointing fingers but more of healing. This book is deep and is about two individuals and the relationship that they developed. Mr. Dunion sees all shades of grey and realizes that this is not a black or white issue. A good read for another perspective on what Clerical incest is about. Paul is very sensitive and this comes through in the book.
