Plato's Socrates
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195101111 |
Book Description
Socrates, as he is portrayed in Plato's early dialogues, remains one of the most controversial figures in the history of philosophy. This book concerns six of the most vexing and often discussed features of Plato's portrayal: Socrates' methodology, epistemology, psychology, ethics, politics, and religion. Brickhouse and Smith cast new light on Plato's early dialogues by providing novel analyses of many of the doctrines and practices for which Socrates is best known. Included are discussions of Socrates' moral method, his profession of ignorance, his denial of akrasia, as well as his views about the relationship between virtue and happiness, the authority of the State, and the epistemic status of his daimonion. By revealing the many interconnections among Socrates' views on a wide variety of topics, this book demonstrates both the richness and the remarkable coherence of the philosophy of Plato's Socrates.Customer Reviews:

Socrates on Trial
Thomas C. Brickhouse , and Nicholas D. Smith Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0691019002 |
Book Description
Thomas Brickhouse and Nicholas Smith offer a comprehensive historical and philosophical interpretation of, and commentary on, one of Plato's most widely read works, the Apology of Socrates. Virtually every modern interpretation characterizes some part of what Socrates says in the Apology as purposefully irrelevant or even antithetical to convincing the jury to acquit him at his trial. This book, by contrast, argues persuasively that Socrates offers a sincere and well-reasoned defense against the charges he faces. First, the authors establish a consensus of ancient reports about Socrates' moral and religious principles and show that these prohibit him from needlessly risking the condemnation of the jury. Second, they consider each specific claim made by Socrates in the Apology and show how each can be construed as an honest effort to inform the jurors of the truth and to convince them of his blamelessness. The arguments of this book are informed by a critical review of the scholarly literature and careful attention to the philosophy expressed in Plato's other early dialogues.

Socrates Reduced To An Abstraction.......2002-08-31
Like many philosophy books, this work is not reader-friendly, making one wade through myriad sections and subsections.
A far better book is the recent one by James Colaiaco, entitled SOCRATES AGAINST ATHENS. Praised for its clarity and elegant prose style, Colaiaco's book captures the drama of Socrates' trial better than any other one, and makes the dissenting philosopher relevant for today. As Colaiaco persuasively argues, Socrates represents a radically new conception of a hero-- the hero as philosopher. Colaiaco's account of the Socrates in Plato's CRITO is illuminating and accurate, with due appreciation for Socrates' brilliant use of irony. Looking for the best book on the trial of Socrates? Read Colaiaco's.

Men or women will find value in this book.......2003-04-20
The nice things about this book is its nice to have a book when you're hungry to read something of value that has something of value to share. The dozens of stories about the unexpected gifts that come into our lives, that are written about, make this book a treat when you want something to read that will energize you. Sorta like a cool fresh clean glass of water on a hot day, or the hot cup of chocolate as the snow falls outside.
Since I am an avid gardener I see each of the dozens of stories she has, as blooms in my garden that I can enjoy every day and for years to come. Like each new flower season and new blooms each story seems to offer a new lesson each time I re-read the book.
Men and women should like this book. And its a great book to give to someone whose in a rut, for a birthday or any occasion. And yes I have some favorites in the book. Namely You Never Know-the wonder of nonjudgement, Beautiful Hands-The wonder of self acceptance, The ... Miracle, Someone Who Cares, A Hug From God, Lost and Found and Strong Stuff-The wonder of achieving personal balance.
