Book Description
Socrates, as he is portrayed in Plato's early dialogues, remains one of the most controversial figures in the history of philosophy. This book concerns six of the most vexing and often discussed features of Plato's portrayal: Socrates' methodology, epistemology, psychology, ethics, politics, and religion. Brickhouse and Smith cast new light on Plato's early dialogues by providing novel analyses of many of the doctrines and practices for which Socrates is best known. Included are discussions of Socrates' moral method, his profession of ignorance, his denial of akrasia, as well as his views about the relationship between virtue and happiness, the authority of the State, and the epistemic status of his daimonion. By revealing the many interconnections among Socrates' views on a wide variety of topics, this book demonstrates both the richness and the remarkable coherence of the philosophy of Plato's Socrates.
Customer Reviews:
A very insightful modern view.......1999-02-19
Brickhouse and Smith go directly to the relevant issues in today's Socratic studies. Following the arguments of Vlastos, Kraut and others, this collection of six essays is both well-thought and insightful. Their documentation or counter arguments and commentaries is very thorough, and lends itself well to deeper investigation. A great book for scholors as well as for those reading Plato for the first time.

Book Description
Harlem entrepreneur and fitness superstar Nona Simms worked hard to make Brickhouse one of the hottest gyms in the city -- her gift to the community that has always been home. Now corrupt city politics is coming uptown, and Nona's dream is slated for the wrecking ball, doomed to die so a new mall can live.
Nona is a fighter, though, and she's gathering her friends around her for support against the special interests. But her cherished business partner, handsome Allen Wade, is growing distant, weighed down by a shattering secret that could destroy both their futures. Best girlfriend Leila has her own problems, suffering through the disintegration of her marriage to a New York Knicks superstar. And Nona's determined battle is pulling her deeper into a web of treachery, deceit, and scandal that stretches into the very highest circles of New York power.
But help is on the horizon, even when things are looking hopeless, coming on strong from the last place Nona Simms ever expected ... and from the last man she ever expected to love.
Customer Reviews:
Brickhouse Needed More of a Foundation.......2007-09-10
I read the book "Homecourt Advantage" and enjoyed it, so I eagerly purchased "Brickhouse" and was disappointed. Usually when a book is well written, I can breeze through reading it with no difficulties. However, it took me forever to get through this book! The characters did not hold my interest and the plot was uninteresting and felt a bit contrived. Sorry, but I expected so much more.
This Book was a great start.......2007-07-20
This book was good. It was everything expected and I would buy it again. It was close to real life to me. In the way people deal with there problems and how you should notice the things that are around you but you always put off your first mind because you dont want to believe about the bad in people.
Brickhouse.......2006-10-11
Harlem girl turned fitness superstar and entrepreneur, Nona Simms, maintains two very important mind-sets to keep her gym `Brickhouse' a success - hard work and dedication. No matter how famous she gets, she will always call Harlem home and she is there to stay!
But, when the disgraceful and shifty community leader Rev. Watkins, threatens to force Brickhouse out of Harlem only to replace it with a shopping mall, Nona is prepared to fight fire with fire. Although Nona is geared up for the gossip laden battle that is about to ensue, additional personal concerns arise, further deepening her anger and humiliation.
Adding on to her misery, her insecure daughter is escalating into a path of self-destruction, her best friend and business partner, Allen Wade, is hiding a terrible secret that can destroy him physically and a man she loathes is weaving his way into her heart at the most inopportune time.
As Nona fights for all that she loves, she struggles to keep strong to also fight off the disparaging challenges that face her.
It was Good!.......2006-01-11
This book was nice. Nona owns her own gym, Brickhouse in her home town, Harlem. She has fought tooth and nail to have it, now she has to fight tooth and nail to keep it. Her business partner, Allen has been hooked on steriods for years, eventually he quits, but since he used iot for so long, his body aches for it. Now Allen is back on steriods. This is where the story gets interesting. Reverand Watkins is builiding a mall in Harlem, the only problem, is that means Brickhouse will close for good. Of course there's some sheisty activity going on and Nona does find out. It's the people who are behind it that makes it so sheisty. Is it her best friend Anna's husband, Anthony, the mayor? Or Allen, her best friend adn business partner? This was a hot book.
Falling short of its goals.......2005-12-01
Ewing's book is about Nora Simms, the successful owner of Brickhouse, a workout center located in Harlem. The story revolves around her struggle to keep her workout center despite a local sleaze-ball Reverend's attempt to boot her. Revolving stories include her daughter's bulimia, her partner's drug abuse, her friend's marital problems and oh, a romance.
To be honest, there is a lot of potential here. Ewing's idea is fresh, her prose has a nice voice, but the book either needed to be about... 300 pages longer, or take out half of her characters' issues. Ewing just takes too much on and still tries to keep things light. It makes her book feel very shallow. Ewing clearly isn't afraid to be real, but she spreads herself so thin, she doesn't do any of the topics justice--not the substance abuse (Nona's partner's or her daughter's), not the adultery, the corruption, the struggle of young women against stereotypes--it was so FRUSTRATING!!!
Nevertheless, I did like Ewing's style, and it might be worth your time to grab from the library, but don't buy it.
P.S. pet peeves:
--repeated references to how Nona feels connected to Harlem. Has Ewing been to Harlem? I couldn't tell. Felt that was weak. Prove it!
--sex scene was totally unnecessary and gross--why include it?
--are those women supposed to be Nona's friends? they're not really admirable women.

The Trial of Socrates

Book Description
Thomas Brickhouse and Nicholas Smith offer a comprehensive historical and philosophical interpretation of, and commentary on, one of Plato's most widely read works, the Apology of Socrates. Virtually every modern interpretation characterizes some part of what Socrates says in the Apology as purposefully irrelevant or even antithetical to convincing the jury to acquit him at his trial. This book, by contrast, argues persuasively that Socrates offers a sincere and well-reasoned defense against the charges he faces. First, the authors establish a consensus of ancient reports about Socrates' moral and religious principles and show that these prohibit him from needlessly risking the condemnation of the jury. Second, they consider each specific claim made by Socrates in the Apology and show how each can be construed as an honest effort to inform the jurors of the truth and to convince them of his blamelessness. The arguments of this book are informed by a critical review of the scholarly literature and careful attention to the philosophy expressed in Plato's other early dialogues.
Customer Reviews:
Socrates Reduced To An Abstraction.......2002-08-31
Exhaustive detail fills this Brickhouse & Smith book, neglecting Socrates the person. This is yet another philosophy book that reduces Socrates to a mere series of arguments. Concerned with synthesizing and/or refuting interpretations of other scholars, this book joins the several that fail to present the trial of Socrates in cultural context. The authors also fail to show the dissident character of Socrates, choosing instead to bury him under a mound of philosophical abstractions. Undervalued in this book is Socrates the civil disobedient. The reader is led to think that this great ironic philosopher, as represented in Plato's CRITO, was opposed to civil disobedience. Misreading the CRITO, this book portrays Socrates as a mere apologist for the status quo rather than the political dissident that he actually was. If the Socrates of history depicted in this book is the true one, he probably would not have been tried and executed.
Like many philosophy books, this work is not reader-friendly, making one wade through myriad sections and subsections.
A far better book is the recent one by James Colaiaco, entitled SOCRATES AGAINST ATHENS. Praised for its clarity and elegant prose style, Colaiaco's book captures the drama of Socrates' trial better than any other one, and makes the dissenting philosopher relevant for today. As Colaiaco persuasively argues, Socrates represents a radically new conception of a hero-- the hero as philosopher. Colaiaco's account of the Socrates in Plato's CRITO is illuminating and accurate, with due appreciation for Socrates' brilliant use of irony. Looking for the best book on the trial of Socrates? Read Colaiaco's.

THIS IS ALOT OF THIS AND THAT FROM VETERAN BROADCASTER JACK BRICKHOUSE. HIS CAREER IN CHICAGO IS LEGENDARY. HE GIVES A ALOT OF GREAT STORIES OF HIS CAREER, OPINIONS, LIFE IN GENERAL, AND SOME HUMOROUS LETTERS SENT TO HIM OVER THE YEARS. A VERY NICE READ FOR ALL BASEBALL FANS. RECOMMENDED.
Brickhouse Review.......2000-02-20
If you love baseball and the Chicago Cubs, this book is for you. Jack Brickhouse was Cubs' baseball during the time I was growing up on the north side of Chicago and he was a welcome member of our family, through the TV and radio.
Later in life, we became close friends and he was a mentor to me. A finer gentleman you will never meet. The book is a history of the Cubs from the mid-40's through the 90's and it also tells the story of WGN-TV, one of the nation's great independent stations.
Hey! Hey! This book is a grandslam homer in the ninth inning.

SOMETHING WONDERFUL is a delicious tale with a touch of mystery! You'll love all the characters and their stories of finding love and placement within their world!
Not to be missed!
amazing book--.......2007-09-23
5 stars-- duke, ton, earls, but her books are easy to read, you don't get lost in the language. it makes you wish you lived in that era. her books are the best i have ever read.
WOW! This is a keeper!.......2007-05-11
Not many books have, for me, been so emotionally draining. In the beginning of the book, while reading in bed at night the night before last, I had a hard time keeping my laughter to myself so that I wouldn't wake my husband. Last night, I got so lost in it, I couldn't put it down. In the end I had to leave the last few chapters till this morning. Maybe it was just because I was so tired after so little sleep, but the last three chapters had me sobbing. I will definitely be reading this one again.
Rich titled English people.......2007-03-19
You have to like to read about the rich, titled, shallow, pointless English society of the 1800's to enjoy this book. True the beginning was good and nobody on the planet would not like the Alex character in the first few chapters, but she becomes boring and shallow pretty quick and ready to forget the 'old' life. I KNOW, I KNOW she WAS sad for a WHOLE year while she diligently worked to be the best little rich girl in London, but... ah, come on.

"An important book about the most important American theatrical endeavor since the Group Theatre. Plus, it's fun to read." -David Mamet
Customer Reviews:
A biased reader loves this book.......2000-12-27
Jeff's review may be self serving, but so is mine - my dad, the late Bill Alton, is interviewed in the book. This is probably one of the best books about Second City because it is written in the words of those who created Second City. Don't get me wrong, Sheldon's new book is O.K. but this book is better. Bless Jeff for getting these interviews before we lost too many of the original performers. If you can only get one book about Second City - buy this one.
Fine history of the grandaddy of all comedy troupes........1999-10-21
For those not familiar with the Second City, it is basically the granddaddy of all comedy troupes. Started in the mid-'50s as the Compass Players, it transformed into Second City in 1959 and has been going strong ever since, even opening sister theatres in Toronto & Detroit. So many of our current and past comedy stars have started here, it's mindboggling. The Belushi brothers, Bill Murray, Alan Arkin, Joan Rivers, Robert Klein, Chris Farley, Bonnie Hunt, Ryan Stiles, Richard Kind, David Steinberg, Alan Alda, Peter Boyle, the entire cast of "SCTV Network," Philip Baker Hall, Mike Myers, Bob Odenkirk, Tim Meadows, Dan Aykroyd... the list goes on and on. This book was written in the '70s and is a collection of interviews w/ several of the company's key writer/performer/directors, among them Gilda Radner, Avery Schreiber, & Mina Kolb. A must-read for anyone who loves improv, sketch comedy, theatre technique, and, specifically, the Second City!
Fascinating and valuable to any student of improv.......1999-02-11
I read this book when I was first starting out in improv about 12 years ago. It features interviews with many of my heros and is still inspiring to me. I went on to work at Second City years later and found this book essential to my understanding of that place's traditions as well as the fact that traditions are made to be broken--with respect, of course.
Oral history of Second City.......1996-02-13
This is a completely self-serving comment because I wrote thebook. But it occurs to me that it's hard to tell from the listingwhat the book is about. Briefly -- it's an oral history of the Second City, the Chicago-based theatre that popularized improvisational comedy. There are extensive and exclusive interviews here with Mike Nichols, Barbara Harris (her only full-length interview in more than 25 years), Alan Arkin, Alan Alda, Joan Rivers, Robert Klein, David Steinberg, Gilda Radner, Del Close, the late, great Severn Darden, Paul Mazursky and the founder, Paul Sills.Being a book about people who created classic comedy, it can't help but be funny. But, beyond that, it and Viola Spolin's Improvisation for the Theatre and Keith Johnstone's Impro offer concrete ideas on how to build theatre of all kinds -- not just improv. I have been told by several people that Something Wonderful helped them decide what kind of theatre they wanted to do. (Mick Napier, founder of Chicago's celebrated Annoyance Theatre, was quoted as saying this in an interview with him in Chicago Magazine.) Certainly, working on the book changes my own ideas about the theatre in general and playwriting in particular. (How is the subject of another book, The Dramatist's Toolkit. Incidentally, I'd be delighted to receive E-mail regarding any of my writing.Jeffrey Sweet -- E-mail: DGSweet@aol.com

Little Hen isn’t a prizewinning White Leghorn like Lily. She’s not a celebrated Rhode Island Red like Gertie. She’s not a sleek Silver Lace like Biddie. She’s just a regular chicken, and she feels left out. All that changes when a terrible storm hits the farm--and Little Hen shows everyone what it really means to be special.

Something Wonderful is Something Special............2002-01-09
Poor Little Hen. She's not a prize winning fowl like her coopmates, Biddie, Lily, Rosie, and Gertie. She's just small and ordinary. But as Mrs Field, the farmer's wife tells her, "Don't be sad because you're small...Small creatures can do wonderful things." And though the other chickens laughed when she told them, right then and there Little Hen decided she was going to do something wonderful. It wasn't long before she got her chance. One very hot summer day the chickens strutted into the cool woods to lay their eggs in a shady nest. They all walked away and forgot about them, all except Little Hen..... Jenny Nimmo has written a sweet and endearing story with a gentle message that will warm the hearts of young and old alike. Her simple and easy to read text makes this a great read aloud book at story time, and is complemented by Debbie Boon's charming, colorful and expressive artwork. Perfect for little ones 3-7, Something Wonderful is a joyous, engaging story with a happily-ever-after ending, reminding youngsters that each and every one of us is special and capable of something wonderful.

Customer Reviews:
Our Lives Are Wonderful.......2004-09-24
We've all been taught to look for things and happiness outside of ourselves. We've had the ability and resources for happiness all this time--inside ourselves. We are able to create for ourselves the environment we live in. Robin has some eye opening stories that will help us see this. We can't control cicumstances but we can control our reaction to them. The Love Light at the end of each story is a great idea source. Let your happiness and joy flow!
Men or women will find value in this book.......2003-04-20
Had reviewed her Ten Gifts book a few years ago and wanted this book partly because I like her writing style and partly because what she writes about is a major interest of mine. And she certainly didn't disappoint me.
The nice things about this book is its nice to have a book when you're hungry to read something of value that has something of value to share. The dozens of stories about the unexpected gifts that come into our lives, that are written about, make this book a treat when you want something to read that will energize you. Sorta like a cool fresh clean glass of water on a hot day, or the hot cup of chocolate as the snow falls outside.
Since I am an avid gardener I see each of the dozens of stories she has, as blooms in my garden that I can enjoy every day and for years to come. Like each new flower season and new blooms each story seems to offer a new lesson each time I re-read the book.
Men and women should like this book. And its a great book to give to someone whose in a rut, for a birthday or any occasion. And yes I have some favorites in the book. Namely You Never Know-the wonder of nonjudgement, Beautiful Hands-The wonder of self acceptance, The ... Miracle, Someone Who Cares, A Hug From God, Lost and Found and Strong Stuff-The wonder of achieving personal balance.
Pitch the Prozac.......2003-03-18
We are surrounded by beauty and wonder--Robin will make it come alive in your world. You will see possibilities in every crisis--you will find hope and goodness where once you saw only despair. I say, "pitch the Prozac" and read Robin's books.
"A Breath of Fresh Air" :).......2003-02-18
A WONDERFUL "Breath of Fresh Air" is what Robin L. Silverman's newest book is...
Ahhhhhh... in this time of so many "scarey" stories on television or in our newspapers, it is a refreshing, (and MUCH appreciated) change to read Robin's newest book. "Something Wonderful is About to Happen".It is a collection of true, (and oh-so-wonderful) stories of real people and the wonderful things that happened to them when their hearts and spirits were open to them. While you are reading this joyful book, look up and glance in the mirror... you will find that you are smiling!(inside and out!).
After reading this book your heart will be open to receiving "somthing wonderful" in YOUR life as well. Get ready! :)
