Presto! With a conjuror's flourish, the reliable Jeffery Deaver has pulled another winner out of his hat. The Vanished Man brings back Lincoln Rhyme, forensic investigator, and his sidekick Amelia Sachs, ex-model and beat cop, a team featured in four previous books. Their case begins with a murder in which the culprit, cornered in a locked room, seemingly vanishes into thin air. Rhyme soon realizes he's up against a master illusionist--and then acquires a conjuror of his own, a spunky apprentice magician, to advise him. The book is chock-a-block with magic lore and with details of the craft of illusion, which provide a fine complement to the engrossing forensic-science puzzles.
The characters, as usual with Deaver, are little more than cardboard cutouts. Even Rhyme himself, a brilliant quadriplegic and former head of NYPD forensics, seems more a collection of characteristics than a man. But Deaver's cutouts are sturdy and well-constructed, and the book's plotting and pacing--featuring twist upon twist and reversal upon reversal--are nothing short of dazzling, reminiscent of Agatha Christie at her best. Deaver proves himself an accomplished illusionist, misdirecting your attention with one hand while slipping a firecracker down your pants with the other. --Nicholas H. Allison
Book Description
Forensic expert Lincoln Rhyme and his protégée Amelia Sachs are called in to work the high-profile investigation of a killer who seemingly disappeared into thin air just as the police closed in. As the homicidal illusionist baits them with grisly murders that grow more diabolical with each victim, Rhyme and Sachs must go behind the smoke and mirrors to prevent a horrific act of vengeance that could become the greatest vanishing act of all....
Download Description
It begins at a prestigious music school in New York City. A killer flees the scene of a homicide and locks himself in a classroom. Within minutes, the police have him surrounded. When a scream rings out, followed by a gunshot, they break down the door. The room is empty. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are brought in to help with the high-profile investigation. For the ambitious Sachs, solving the case could earn her a promotion. For the quadriplegic Rhyme, it means relying on his protegee to ferret out a master illusionist they've dubbed "the conjurer," who baits them with gruesome murders that become more diabolical with each fresh crime. As the fatalities rise and the minutes tick down, Rhyme and Sachs must move beyond the smoke and mirrors to prevent a terrifying act of vengeance that could become the greatest vanishing act of all.
Customer Reviews:
Deaver hits another homerun!.......2007-09-01
I am continually amazed by how knowledgable Deaver is about the main themes of his novels. Not just about criminology, but in this novel, illusion. The amount of research that goes into this book only enhances the enjoyment of the story.
The reader continually has the rug pulled out from him/her, which makes this a top notch thriller. This book is highly recommended.
Tedious and not so magical a storyline.......2007-08-05
I really do like Lincoln Rhyme stories by Jeffery Deaver. This one just went on too long and was hard to get into. Magic was at the heart of the storyline and sometimes descriptions were vivid and sometimes just clouded by confusion. I never really got into the story, I didn't care for the main character and then find that he wasn't the pivotal villain after all. I can't put my finger on why I didn't care for this novel, but, I know something isn't right when I don't want to add the book to my collection. I cherish books I have read, and even if I don't re-read them, I know that I can. This book will go to Goodwill and I hope the next book I read will get me back on the Lincoln Rhyme track of enthusiasm.
This guy doesn't know how to write a bad book.......2007-06-01
We already knew that Lincoln Rhyme, despite his physical disabilities, has an IQ of at least 300 and, well, he always gets his man - but in this case he really does seem to have found his match. The initial opening sequence - when our 'vanished man' does just that under seemingly impossible circumstances - sets the standard for the rest of the tale, one in which visual deception is the key trick in much the same way that a magician manipulates his audience into thinking that (for example) he has been sawn in half. We know it can't be possible, yet our eyes defy us to prove otherwise.
As with every other Deaver novel I have read (about 10 so far), the writing is consistently intelligent, there's barely a flaw in the descriptive text or the spoken word, the author always flatters his readers with just enough clues so as to leave us to work things out for ourselves and never makes the mistake (as many writers do) of adding condescending pulp to the main lines. He makes us think, he makes us work with Rhyme to work out the puzzles, as if we're one of his foot-soldiers (chief among these being Amelia Sachs of course). If there's a criticism to be made of The Vanished Man, it's that there could be at least one ending too many, and I wondered if Deaver was showing off his creative skills for the sake of out-doing others in his peer group.
I've read several Rhyme novels now, they're all good or very good, and, importantly, always unique in their own way (by comparison I'm finding Ian Rankin's 'Rebus' story lines slightly one-dimensional) and I'd say that for the moment, The Vanished Man is Deaver's best yet.
I tried to figure out the twists in this book before they happened, but as usual, I couldn't and neither will you........2007-04-02
No spoilers
As usual with Deaver's novels (especially the Rhyme series), I could not figure out or anticipate the plot twists he was about to spring on me, even though I tried to look for them. Although I'm one of the readers who considers Bone Collector the best of the series up to this point, all of the others haven't been too far behind that, and this one isn't either. The Vanished Man centers on an antagonist who uses magic and illusions to commit murders and then escape from those pursuing him. If you've like any of the previous Rhyme books then this one won't be different and you'll tear it up in no time, just like the rest of the books. This book is so different in terms of main subject than the previous books, yet it is similar in that it'll keep you glued to it. It's another solid Rhyme addition.

I love every jeffery deaver book i have read. I love the rhyme series. If you saw and enjoyed the movie "The Bone Collector" you will enjoy these books.
Book Description
In 1939 the Polish town of Konin vanished in the wake of Nazi occupation. Twenty-five years later, Theo Richmond set out to find what he could about that vanished world. He traveled across the United States, Europe, and Israel, tracing survivors and sifting through archives and the stories of those he interviewed. A project he thought would take six months took seven years. Finally he confronted the Konin of today. Interweaving past and present,
Konin tells the story of one community--how it began, how it flourished, and how it ended--and in the process re-creates the precariousness, anguish and necessity of human memory.
"A fascinating memorial to a lost community and the people who lived there."--The New York Times Book Review
"One reads [it] sometimes with a smile...always on the edge of tears--as if it were the most gripping adventure story."--Elie Wiesel, New York Newsday
Customer Reviews:
A Journey Into Lives.......2003-08-03
Konin, subtitled A Quest, is indeed exactly that. It is Theo Richmond's quest across time, place, culture, and humanity. It is his quest to learn where he came from, to understand the place his older relatives spoke of so often in his youth, but which he started out knowing rather little about.
Konin is the small Polish town from which Richmond's (originally Ryczke) family emigrated well before the Jewish community was all but destroyed. From the start, Richmond seeks to learn all he can of the town's history and people, particularly the Jewish people and their section of the town. Some of the text is the town's history dating back into the nineteenth century, and there is some mention of even earlier times, but mostly it is the stories told in the words of the surviving people.
Though some did not respond to his requests, Richmond found dozens of old Koniners whose memories seem crystal clear. And from this, we the readers build up a crystal clear picture of their lives in the community. Almost everything is told in stories, long or short, happy or sad, of life. True, in some sections Richmond includes his own narrative, but even there the stories of the people are interwoven into the tapestry. We do not learn about Konin so much as experience it, with all its goods and bads and excitements and boredoms. And as Richmond is no detached observer, we follow him as he passes back through time into pre-war Poland. He tells us not only who the people are then and now, but how he comes to meet them and the impressions they make.
As might be expected, many of the surviving Koniners experienced the Holocaust, or Shoah, firsthand. With their life in Konin and since comes their life during that horrid time. This is Richmond's quest into and away from humanity. Although many of these pages only touch on Konin in that they relate to Koniners, they make up some of the most gripping reading between these two covers. They are included, of course, to complete today's picture of the Konin community.
One need not be Jewish or knowledgeable of Jewish history (I am neither) to appreciate Konin. One need only appreciate good writing, which Richmond provides, gripping drama, which life provides, and a willingness to see the fascinating slice-of-life of a largely ordinary community that is Konin.
Crowning achievement.......2001-08-06
Yes, this is another Holocaust archival work and yes, it is brilliantly researched and written. But Richmond's crowning achievement, I propose, is his ability to create a lengthy work as this, about people many readers could never know, without ever letting it lapse into sentimentality or a wearisome litany of names, faces and facts. And yes, I have tearfully walked the streets of Konin with those Shoah survivors who now live in England, the US, and Israel. Richmond has ensured that the Nazi attempt to relegate Jewish Konin to oblivion has been thwarted. And we are much the better for it. "For the dead and the living we must bear witness." Thank you Mr Richmond. You have witnessed for the murdered of Kazimierz forest and all the other killing fields of Nazi Europe.
Read It.......2001-04-11
There is little I can add to the existing reviews save yet another resounding confirmation of this book's brilliance. Konin is a superbly written, award-winning thing translated into Polish, Hebrew, German and Italian.
The book is impeccable stylistically and intellectually, and the thorny issue of Polish-Jewish relations is penetrated with honesty and insight. The people interviewed and depicted in the book are -- well, simply, REAL.
Well worth reading.......1999-12-28
I found this book absolutely fascinating. My Grandmother came from Konin so for me it was a look into the world my Grandmother left behind.
THIS IS A MUST!.......1999-12-18
My wife Urszula and I had decided to take a day out in London, some sight seeing and shopping. We passed the many book shops on Charing Cross rd, but a book in one shop window caught my eye, 'Konin, a quest'. My wife is Polish, from the town of Konin. But what could this book be about, we wonder? There is nothing in Konin. How wrong we were! The book amazed us. I have read many publications on the holocaust, but nothing moved me quite like this book. The research and the feeling, the hardwork put into this account of a community so thoroughly wiped out that my wife hadn't even been aware that a Jewish community had ever existed and yet she grew up on its streets. In fact, the school she went to, the Gymnasium was built by the jewish people prior to the war. But nothing was or is taught about the jewish people within its walls, no reminders, nothing. Until now. Theo Richmond's work is a priceless reminder of want was lost and what should never be forgotten. We look forward greatly to the day the book is published in polish, when everyone there has a chance to understand just what was lost. We met Theo recently, his powerful charater came across so well in his book, as it is such an honest account, that it felt as though we had known him for years. Buy It! It is the best book you will ever read on the Jewish people.
Customer Reviews:
The book is an illusion itself.......2007-06-22
The only point that I felt discontented with this roller-coaster story is a bit of kindness Rhyme showed to Kara after the mystery-solving climax. Is the scene produced from the sake of thorough happiness of every member belonging to Rhyme's team? That's as may be, but this kind of humanism seems a bit different from what the cool criminalist is likely to indicate. This complaint is, however, as a result of very lively description of the characters. Therefore, we readers anyway have to admit the compelling skill of Jeffery Deaver.
Jeffrey Deaver Never Disappoints.......2005-08-04
Criminologist Lincoln Rhyme is pitted against one of his most worthy opponents in this novel. The villain is a killer and a psychopath but he has spent most of his life in the world of magic. He is an illusionist and an escapologist and he is good. It looks as though he is doing one thing but he is doing another. Code named Conjuror by Rhyme and his team his murders and especially his escapes are well planned. He seems to be always one step ahead of the investigators with escape plans that involve changing his appearance totally in minutes.

Not as much zing........2007-08-10
It's been 2 years since we last met up with the Baranov Royal family and there've been some changes. King Al is no longer mooning over Queen Elizabeth II but has transferred his affections to Princess Christina's mother and Princess Alexandria is now a victim of post traumatic stress after an incident which occurred in the 1st book. Her father, the ever hysterical King (our personal favourite character) suggests that she get away from it all by visiting an aquarium in North Dakota.
One irate marine biologist later and Alexandria is too busy fighting and flirting to worry about her problems. Dr Shel Rivers has nothing but contempt for royalty, dismissing them all as spoiled and arrogant and no one, not even a tempting, sassy redhead is going to make him change her mind, no matter how soft her lips are. Watch the sparks fly as stubborn meets determined.
Royally Disappointing.......2007-03-21
Ok, I admit I like fluff reading. Books that don't take a lot of mental energy to enjoy are great for those times when you just want to space out and read something silly. The Royal Pain was a disappointment though. I would like some substance to my books, not all fluff and stuff. MaryJanice Davidson's previous book in this series, The Royal Treatment, was really enjoyable to read. It seems she rushed this one a little, not focusing on developing her characters more than was absolutely necessary. Maybe it was just me, but some of this book was a bit disjointed. I actually turned back and forth to see if a page or two was missing. There just seemed to be gaps in the story line. Anyway, I wouldn't say not to read The Royal Pain, just don't expect much in the way of furthering the story of the Baranovs.
ROYAL HIT!!!!!.......2006-06-29
I know this book disappoints a lot of people but after having read Hello Gorgeous, I was vastly relieved. This book, although a little lacking in angst and action/conflict was fun breezy read. Any body that is a MJD fan will enjoy this book for its enthralling characters and quick-witted dialect. In my opinion this book is a ROYAL HIT and I would love to see a sequel that contains some of what it lacked. (Action wise)
Where's the Meat!.......2006-03-01
I started reading MJD with the undead and un.... series and I totally loved her books! But I'm sorry. I don't know what it is about her writing but its going down hill. This book barely had a plot, to many one line quips and comebacks.
MJD isn't writing anymore for the story/readers she's writing for the money or she isn't getting deadlines far enough in advance so she can let the book sit and come back and read it herself and add where it needs it.
I am not trying to knock MJD, I'm just saying she needs to get back to writing the way she used to. If you want to read the REAL MJD, read her first few books!
Not Davidson's Best.......2006-02-15
Princess Alexandria, "call me Alex," Baranov can't sleep. Exhausted from nightmare-inspired insomnia, and ridden with anxiety, the Alaskan Royal is coming apart at the seams. Alex's dad, King Al, decides to intervene by sending her to South Dakota to represent the family at a marine institute function.
Dr. Sheldon Rivers-better call him Shel-resents the royal intrusion. As the resident marine biologist, he is stuck dealing with the rich princess when he'd rather be getting some work done.
In a clash of headstrong personalities, Alex and Shel have a few things to figure out, like how to get Alex to sleep. That brings up all sorts of interesting possibilities . . .
Once again, Davidson's witty prose pulls the reader along on a comedic ride. That said, this read was a bit of a disappointment. Aside from the hot, sexy romance, there didn't seem to be enough substance behind Alex and Shel's relationship. Alone, each character has depth, but placed with other people, their personalities leave a bit to be desired. Alex is almost too much of a diva, while Shel is gruff until a switch flips and he's concerned and pushy about Alex.
The secondary romance with Alex's assistant, Jenny, suffers from similar problems. Just when Jenny was about to experience much-needed growth, she made a choice not to do so.
It was hard to maintain sympathy for these characters, despite Alex's troubled history. Unfortunately, it didn't help that the writing itself was a distraction, as it was littered with profanity on almost every page. For some readers, that alone cheapens a romantic read.
For readers who don't mind constant use of the f-word and serious attitude, this novel is worth the read. This may not be Davidson's best, but her wit is enjoyable in most of her work.

Not Bad!!!!!.......2003-03-27
this series isn't bad. at least you get a change in the background, not always boring sweet valley. and i wish that the cover would be nicer, the pictures are so horrible! but the stories are fantastic and max seems adorable!
A great continuation about our favorite twins!.......2001-08-04
The Elizabeth series is definitly great. I always wondered what the twins would do when they got older, like where they would live and what their jobs would be. In this series, Elizabeth jets off to London in hope of a new start. The only work she can find is the maid of an earl... Everything is so interesting, like the new setting, characters, and plot. It's very descriptive, and you always want to know what will happen next. I definitly recomend this series to others.
Go back to uni Elizabeth.......2001-08-02
I still have not finished this book. Its not exactly that I dont like it but I am uninterested in Chloes sexual decisions.I would rather Elizabeth go back to uni in the usa instead of carrying on in that stupid castle.

HILARIOUS! .......2006-11-20
This book kept me laughing histerically till the end. Why hasn't anyone made it into a movie? Maybe it's not the most realistic book but it sure is funny! I have read it 6 times at least, and I am still not tired of it. Whenever I'm feeling down, and need to laugh I just pull out A Royal Pain. I found it at a thrift store in North Carolina and am so glad I did. It is now one of my favorite books! A princess, a nefarious plot, a royal switch and a hunk. What could be better? Totally clean, and anyone can read it. I loved it!
This book is great for anyone over the age of 9!.......2006-03-02
My 4th grade teacher read this book to us many moons ago. I later read it again on my own and it began my path to being an avid reader. The characters are sassy and ingenius. The plot (though admittedly far-fetched) is every girls dream. It is a classic tale and I highly recommend to anyone.
A Royal Pain.......2005-11-08
A good friend of mine told me that this was a great book. So when I found a copy of it 3 years later I was thrilled. It was a nice and sweet book. I loved the ending. Every girl should read this book just because it is so much fun.
Helped me fall in love with reading as a child.......2004-06-09
I read this 15 years ago and still remember th whole story. My little girl is not a very enthusiastic reader, but I know that this book will spark her interest just as it did for me so many years ago.
Favorite Book of all Times.......2004-01-18
A Royal Pain was the best book I have read in a long time. All girls who dream of becoming a princess need to read this book. I liked it so much that I got my best friend to read it and she absolutly adored it.
