Not my favorite..........2007-06-22

The Touch of Fire was not one of my favorite books by Linda Howard but if you like to read about kidnapping and then two people falling in love rather passionately then please, buy the book.

Good History.......2006-08-20

I did not like this book at particularly because it took a while to get into. But after a while when it picked up you see how [Howard] gave them a feel for each other. They learned each other through the time that passed and you eventually soften up to Reed and learn he is not the rough and hard, just scarred. His love for Annie truly surprised me and made it for an even better read. But the whole point of the story does not catch up until the later 3rd of the book and you really learn what it going on. It is good though history wise and I would definately recommend it for though into 1800 romance.

L.H. serves up a stunningly simply romance story line - with psychologically complex characters. Two people nursing life's scars, one from betrayal and injustice, and the other from deeply rooted prejudices of the times come together, with one thing on their minds - survival, and found a deep and lasting love like no other! He: from 4 years of running, staying one step ahead of his relentless pursuers, hired by men who sought his destruction due to the secret that he carried - knowledge that could bring about the downfall of very powerful and ruthless men. She: taken against her will from the meagre medical practice that she has built while fighting every step of the way against the ingrained prejudices of the day, which held woman were a weak and needy lot, who belonged in the kitchen or the brothel, and certainly lacked the intelligence needed to be anything else! Friend or foe? It's journey of understanding, trust, and caring that turns to deepest love, and ultimately hope and faith that takes them all to the edge and back! A beautiful story with all the right ingredients to qualify as a great read, and with a wonderful ending! Not to be missed. I'm keeping this one!

Not her best.......2005-10-04

I love all of Linda Howard's books that I've read so far, but this book I didn't like at all. I read the book hoping that at some point I could find something positive to say about it, but didn't. I think the author was maybe confused in how to portray Annie, sometimes she was strong enough, at least to finish medicine school when all the odds were against her, and at other times she was a wimp in standing up for her life. At least I would have expected that she would fight Rafe at some point for kidnaping her. In my opinion what inspired the author to write the book was very interesting and she could have done a lot more with that kind of story. But overall I love Linda Howard so even if I'm dissapointed with some of her work I'm still going to keep reading it.

A Nice Touch..........2005-08-14

"Some people are just naturally bad[]". "Men and women. They're born mean and they die mean. Others kind of drift into it, a little at a time. And sometimes they're pushed." (THE TOUCH OF FIRE). Do the reasons matter?

When hero/anti-hero, Rafferty McCay ("Rafe") met Doctor Annis Theodora Parker ("Annie") he was already a different man than he ever would have imagined growing up a young Southern gentleman. Howard writes, "He'd been twenty-four, and just beginning to think of the security and closeness of marriage, when the war had started. The following four years of guerrilla fighting with Mosby had hardened him []". Fate would have it that meeting Rafe would begin a process of change that would shape Annie into a far different woman than she ever had been before. Considered an old maid, she would have a chance to experience passion. Committed to saving life, Annie would find herself in the position to end one...all for a love she had never believed she would have, want or need.

According to Rafe, very powerful people have framed him in order to keep a secret buried. Their reprehensible scheme has robbed him of his freedom and identity. The bad things he has done, the crimes he has committed were all in self-defense, he claims. And he has no choice but to drag the good doctor, Annie into the mess when he finds himself knocking at death's door. The question is whether he and Annie can find a satisfying resolution-give Rafe and Annie their lives back.

As I see it, there are a couple of big problems:

First, Rafe becomes unbelievably mushy over the course of THE TOUCH OF FIRE. His behavior in the later half of the book is very inconsistent with what he portrayed in the beginning: a man whose memories of what it means to be sensitive and caring have burned to bitter dust. It's got to be hard to ease a tough-as-nails hero into a sensitive lover through the course of a novel, and in THE TOUCH OF FIRE it definitely showed. There seem to be two heroes-Rafe I and Rafe II.

THE TOUCH OF FIRE kind of goes down the corny and incredible road to disaster when, after not one but three bounty hunters have proved how far they are willing to go to acquire the 10,000 dollar bounty on our heroes head, Rafe is convinced by doe-eyed innocent, Doc Annie to stop for a week to administer aid to an ailing Apache camp. Declared enemies of the white man are dying of black measles and Rafe and Annie put their lives at risk in what is an essentially impossible task. This interlude is out-of-character for Rafe and nauseating on the part of Annie.

And for a sadly over-the-top finish: (1) There is an odd suggestion Howard wants us to swallow and that Rafe incongruously pitches-Annie is a white medicine woman who can heal through touch (an odd twist that tastes awfully gimmicky, not to mention awkward to this reviewer); and (2) Badass marshal Atwater shows up to conclude his final job as marshal, but after hearing Rafe's conspiracy theory Atwater (previously reputed to be this tougher-than-tough lawman) decides that he will oblige the lovers in a detour away from his hard-earned money in favor of helping them prove Rafe's innocence by taking a trip to New Orleans. Marshal Atwater is a humorsome guy (whom I imagine looks something like Clint Eastwood), but he's no tougher than a marshmallow. It just took something away from the book that Howard had everyone go SO soft at the end.

Okay, okay, okay, so Ms. Howard got a little crazy toward the end. Overall, the book is very exciting, sexy and interesting. I give THE TOUCH OF FIRE 4 1/2 stars.

Half American Blaise is being forced by her shrewish English aunt to go visit an older vicar that her aunt intends to try and marry her off to but Blaise is determined that if she marries it will be for love, certainly not to some stuffy cold-fish Englishman. She trades places with a maid and when she sneaks into a room to disguise herself with ashes she encounters a viscount with an adonis face named Julian. Julian is fascinated with the spirited violet eyed girl. He has returned from Spain where he received injuries to his face and leg which has left him with a significant limp. Julian is haunted by the image of his first wife laying dead on a Roman ruin site after a riding accident. His first wife was cheating on him and after they argued, she took off in a storm and he later found her dead. All though he didn't harm her, he feels guilty for her death and her lover spread rumors that Julian murdered her. Julian believes that Blaise can bring him back the enjoyment of life and propositions her. Blaise refuses and claims she is the adopted child of a local gypsy tribe. Blaise's deceased father was a reporter who traveled with the tribe and they agree to help her hide from her aunt. A determined Julian follows and vows he will make Blaise his mistress but when her real identity is revealed his offer will have to be marriage.

This is a great story and has plenty of adventure and passion. I kind of got ticked when Julian treated Blaise so awfully because he had to marry her. She told him from the beginning she didn't want him around but he followed her anyway. Just because he thought she was lower class and available for sex without committment doesn't mean she trapped him into anything. However, he does end up compensating for that still makes me mad.

Touch Me With Fire is a story that blazes with passion and senuality, as the handsome and charasmatic Julian Morrow, Vicount Lynden pursues the beautiful violet eyed, raven haired, Blaise St. James. Julian, an injured war hero is now home from Spain struggling with not only the deep physical and emotional pains of war, but the struggles and rumors surrounding the death of his first wife, which originally caused him to run off and fight so far away from England. Upon his return home, he happens across young Blaise, dressed as a servant, as she is on the run from her guardians and an unwanted arranged marriage. Julian does not realize Blaise is a "lady" and wants her as his mistress. He offers to take her to her gypsy friends and there in the romantic setting of the gypsy camp pursues her with lust and passion that the young, innocent Blaise struggles with and does not truly understand. Under the guidance and love of her gypsy friends, which are like family to her, she begins to fall in love with Julian. While Julian knows he lusts for Blaise, he struggles with his true feelings of love, as he watches the young, kind, loving Blaise care for him and others in the gypsy camp. He sets many alluring passionate traps for Blaise, who is drawn to this handome, sexy, yet troubled man. Finally he can no longer wait and arranges to have her, only to be caught and discover that she is not truly his firey gyspy, but a "lady" of the ton. He feels betrayed and manipulated and Blaise is confused, as their troubled, sensual marriage begins and the mystery surrounding the death of Julian's first wife begins to unravel to a surprise ending. The book is well-written and researched with strong characters, deep mystery, inner emotional stuggles, passion, desire, and love scenes beautifully written that keep the reader riveted to the page. It was a pleasure to read this book the first time around and it was even more pleasurable to visit it again as a reissue.

Julian is a classic tormented hero -- an "alpha" male with a good heart, a scarred face, a gimpy leg, and a young wife who loves him and for whom Julian will do anything, even against his better judgment. Is this your kind of hero? Then try this book. The sex between him and Blaise is hot -- but hey, they're married! Just a very good read, with a smooth style, and lots of gypsy lore. Excellent.

Julian was just one of these characters for me. Not only did he have the scars on the outside but he had them within which were worse. He truly needed a spirited Gypsy type like Blaise to bring him out of his inner suffering and make him whole again. At times Blaise seems to be truly beating her head against the wall with Julian. He seems to fight her at every turn although still enjoying her nightly in his bed. She wants to prove to him and to everyone else that he is not the murderer he thinks he is is. She seems to win on all fronts but with Julian himself. At times you just want to shake him as he makes a few steps forward then misunderstands everything and goes off in a sulk to London. She really has to use desperate measures then to get him back. This was a great romance, although not quite as sensual as others, still very good. As usual Jordan delivers.

If your son/daughter is in to firetrucks,this is the book. My two-year old son is bananas over this book. He looks at it all the time and loves rubbing his hands over the textures on each page. The pictures are great and realistic. This is a must-have for the (2-year old) firetruck ethusiast! He/she will have blast with this book.

For much smaller kids..........2005-07-28

I bought this book for my three year old who LOVES fire trucks. Although he does love it, it is a bit small and seems geared toward age 1-2. It is a very short book, just a few pages, and very small for the price. The size is clearly listed on the page, but I wasn't prepared for how small it actually was. Still a cute and entertaining book my son enjoys looking at the pictures and feeling the front grill of the fire truck.

A Keeper for All Romantica Lovers.......2005-12-10

Wow! I love this cover. Whoever the guy is, (real or not), he's gorgeous!

According to Shiloh Walker, out of all the books she's written, this fantasy romance is her absolute favorite. I can see why. It has all the magick, adventure, good vs. evil theme, captivating characters, delightful humor, romance, and WILD HOT sex. Unlike some authors in the genre, you can generally count on Walker to deliver titillating and passionate sex scenes.

For me, it's rather refreshing to see a heroine getting some action apart from the hero. Romance/erotica usually contain heroes that get all the fun, while the heroines are left moping and sexually frustrated. Although sexual frustration occurs between Tyriel and Aryn (during most of the novel), not so outside their relationship! There are some very delicious and steamy encounters. However, I still think Aryn got more action than Tyriel--not fair!

Tyriel is a very strong, independent woman and is well-matched against the sensually seductive blond Adonis, Aryn. When they first meet, there's a very subtle, earthy attraction. It's not until they pair up and journey together to fight evil--in this case, a dangerous and powerful mage--that their attraction truly develop. Though Tyriel and Aryn are hot for one another, they stubbornly fight their attraction, because they agree that it might complicate their working relationship.

Great sexual tension, but I think it becomes too prolonged! Walker plants Tyriel and Aryn together for 5 long years, and not once do they hook up. Somehow that seems unrealistic to me. How can two people, who are powerfully attracted to one another, resist temptation for that long? When Tyriel and Aryn finally hook up, the story is almost over! And that really bothered me. (Reason for my 4 star rating).

Yet Tyriel and Aryn stayed with me long after I finished reading their story--a testament to Walker's great characterization! Indeed, she is a masterful writer--and fantastic storyteller. She is one of my favorite authors in the genre. I highly recommend most of her novels. She's a very gifted and prolific writer, so there are many exciting novels from which to choose. Some of my personal favorites: VOYEUR, HER WILDEST DREAM, HER BEST FRIEND'S LOVER, and ONCE UPON A MIDNIGHT BLUE. All of them are sizzling reads, but with sensitive love stories to boot!

Touch of Gypsy Fire.......2005-04-24

I enjoyed this book very much, it had adventure and hot love scenes. I thought that Tyriel, had strength of character that I enjoy in a heroine. Aryn had strength, but he was a little dense when knowing if a female likes him or not. duh. I had a few tears reading what Tyriel went through before she was rescued. I enjoyed this book, so I will definitely by the rest her series.

Touch of Gypsy Fire is a magical tale about the battle between good and evil. Full with adventure, a lot of hot sex and romance this book if perfect for every fan of erotic romance. Aryn is a fantastic and very seductive hero that you will fall in love with. Another keeper by Shiloh Walker!

Good strong moral values are taught in this series. Easy reading gives you an idea of what it was like to live in the 1800's including travel, homelife, and strong work ethics. It takes you back to a slower pace of life. These books are worth reading.

I bought all the movies and all the books for my Mom (83) and she absolutly loves them, she read all 8 books in about a week, said she "just couldnt put them down"!! Highly reccomended!!

Heartwarming and soulful!.......2007-05-06

The Love Comes Sotfly books are wonderful! The characters jump out at you and come alive. They are much better than the Hallmark movies, and it was fun to read the differences and follow the lives of Clark, Marty and their children through the pages. Read the Prairie Legacy also by Janette Oak, they continue the story of Clark and Marty. What a wonderful set of books, I really reccommend them, especially if you like sequels and want to know the rest of the story.

Love's Unfolding Dream.......2007-04-11

In Book 6 of the "Love Comes Softly" series Janette Oke has helped her characters grow with new challenges and decissions to make. She continues to span the years with her characters. A must read.

A Lovely Surprise for this Skeptic........2006-06-03

I have mostly shied away from Christian novels, especially Janette Oke's, but decided to pick this one up and give it a try. Instead of getting a preachy, dry as sandpaper story, I was surprised to get a nice, wholesome story of an incredibly warm and likable family full of strong characters and a good plotline.

I found the rivalry between the girls over the schoolteacher's son both humorous and as frustrating as Marty did, and liked the way Belinda's family subtley reached out to the Simpsons who were too proud to accept charity from any of the neighbors. My favorite characters in this book had to be Marty, Belinda, and her relationship with her older brother Luke as she learned nursing by doing. More than anything, I got Oke's unmistakable message in this book: When you want to win someone over to your beliefs, you don't ram them down their throats, but by patiently waiting as you set an example that will eventually draw them in.

The last 3 books in the Love comes softly series are my favorites. I can really relate to Belinda. I can remember feeling left out when the cute boy always nocited by friend. Also I often feel like I am not sure what to do next in my life. A very good story with a supprising ending that you wont want to miss.

Belinda is a tenderhearted teenager......with nieces.......2003-08-14

Belinda is a teenager. Her closest friends are Melissa (her niece from the West) and Amy Jo the daughter of Clare. The three girls have very different personalities but all love each other...until....one handsome young man comes to their school. Knowing Jackson threatens their friendship for a time.

Belinda cannot bear anything in pain or dying, so she just naturally rescues whatever is maimed. This leads to her brother Luke asking her to help him in his doctor rounds. Belinda has found her calling even at her very young age.

The Davis family continues to be a Godly influence on their community and it zones in on the Simpson family. Young Drew, 17, is seriously injured in a logging accident and Dr. Luke is forced to amputate his arm. The results provide an exciting book to add to Oke's Love Comes Softly series.

An aunt and two neices.......2001-01-01

Belinda, Clark and Marty Davis' late in life child is soft hearted, hates to see any living creature hurt or dead. Her brother Luke, now a doctor encourages her to become a nurse. He feels she has medical potential. Melissa, Belinda's neice comes from the west to finish high school and then later trains to become a school teacher. Amy Jo, Clare and Kate's daughter, who has a very close friendship with Belinda becomes especially close to Melissa and Belinda feels her and Amy Jo will no longer have the closeness they have once had. All three girls become involved with the sam guy.
