Book Description

Sex, love, the 1970s,

and one extraordinary family

that lived to tell the tale

Crackling with intelligence and original humor, The Position is a masterful take on sex and the suburban American family at the hilarious height of the sexual revolution and throughout the thirty-year hangover that followed. Meg Wolitzer, the author of the much-acclaimed novel The Wife (named a notable book of the year by The New York Times Book Review, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, and Newsday), takes another huge step forward with this new book and showcases her distinctive voice, pitch-perfect observations, electric wit, and depth of emotion.

In 1975, suburban parents Paul and Roz Mellow write a Joy of Sex-type book called Pleasuring: One Couple's Journey to Fulfillment, which becomes a surprise runaway bestseller. The Position opens with the four Mellow children, aged six to fifteen, at the moment when they see the mortifying book (and the graphic, pastel illustrations of their parents' creative, vigorous lovemaking) for the very first time -- an experience that will forever complicate their ideas about sex, parents, families, and themselves. The book brings a strange celebrity and small fortune ("sex money" the children call it) to the Mellows and ultimately changes the shape of the family forever.

Thirty years later, as the now-dispersed family members argue about whether to reissue the book, we follow the complicated lives of each of the grown children as they confront their own struggles with love, work, sex, death, and the indelible early specter of their erotically charged parents.

Some novels are about family, and others are about sex. The Position is about sex within the context of a family. Insightful, witty, panoramic, and heartbreaking, it is a compulsively readable novel about an eternally mystifying subject: how a group of people growing up in one house can become so very different from one another.

4 out of 5 stars Just like a new position, this one had some awkward moments.......2007-09-11

The premise of this sometimes delightful book is certainly unique. I'll spare you the details, partly because I'm feeling lazy tonight, but also because other reviewers have done an admirable job of covering the basics. While reading this, I felt a wave of nostalgia (much better than waves of nausea I must say) for the innocence of the 70's - a time when kids had NO clue what went on behind the doors of their parents' bedrooms (thank God). The Mellow children could have been among the clueless, except they accidentally discovered a best-selling book their parents had created and published......and even posed for (imagine the shock here folks; remember, this was the 70's). The story then skips ahead so we get the privilege of seeing just how these kids turned out. You guessed it, they're all slightly dysfunctional (although so am I.......and my parents certainly didn't write a how-to book about sex). This was an interesting read and Wolitzer's writing boasts a quirky sense of humor. The adult children (is that an oxymoron?) were a bit one-dimensional and, at times, painfully odd. But all in all, I would recommend this book, just not to my mother.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting ..........2007-08-26

After reading "The Wife" I was looking forward to this one ~~ and it is definitely a much lighter read but not as good as "The Wife" ~~ this one is more of a fluffier read, a look into family relationships and a look into marriages. It has some depth but it's more of a sexy book than an intellectual book ~~ and slightly morbid as if you're peeking into someone's living room at night through the crack in the curtains. I just finished this book and while it's ok, it does leave you sitting with unfinished thoughts flitting through your head.

This book focuses on the children of the famous couple who wrote a book about sex. The Mellows. (An ironic name if you think about it because none of them were mellow at all.) There's Holly, Michael, Dashiel and Claudia. All of them were influenced by their parents' successful book that they wrote in the 70s, fueled by their love for one another. Holly becomes the estranged daughter. Michael becomes a successful worker in the big Apple. Dashiel becomes a Republican and Claudia struggles to find her own voice in the world. Their parents, Roz and Paul separated and divorced a couple of years after the book was published and this is their story.

It is interesting reading, but not something you want to keep in your library forever ~~ maybe it's because there are so many other books out there that are like that. It's good reading and perfect if you're looking for something quick to read ~~ but don't expect it to be like "The Wife" which really is one of the better books I've read this summer so far.

I loved this book. Meg has a remarkable writing style and insight into human nature. I loved the way she captured the loss of childhood. Not quite as good as The Wife but an excellent read that I highly recommend.

3 out of 5 stars pleasant summer read.......2006-10-15

The story is about a couple (Paul and Roz Mellow) who write a book on their sex life which becomes a huge bestseller. They have four children and one of them discovers the book and shares it with the others. The plot-line evolves around the lives of these four children as adults. We read this book for our book-club this past summer and about midway through the book I become conscious of the narrative shifts along chapter lines -- too many writers use this device and I wonder if it is taught in some writer's course. The author's writing style makes for a quick page turner, and she keeps the plot moving along. Each of the children and the parents themselves become characters the reader identifies with, and by the time I reached the point in the book where the title is explained, I couldn't really care about it. The only nit I'd pick with this book is that if there was a supposed connection between that early event when the children discover their parents' book and their eventual lives (sex or real) -- I didn't get it. If you are looking for a light novel to pass a few hours with, this book might fit the bill.

4 out of 5 stars Easily enjoyable.......2006-09-29

When I initially read the storyline for "The Position" I laughed out loud and said, "Why not? [try it]"

The beginning chapter introduces you to the 4 children and gives some background on the parents. I kind of groaned and thought to myself, "This way too many people to get to know this early in the game." I also thought that her wording/sentence structure was initially run-on and long-winded, I found myself having to read a few sentences over.

Yet, Wolitzer later dedicates a couple chapters or so to each character. So I didn't feel bombarded w/ too much info while reading. Although some have mentioned that not all characters seemed to have completely developed, I personally think that was Wolitzer's intention for those few.

I can say that I had this book handy on a longer European motorcoach tour. This kept me amused for hours during those lengthy drives through the vineyards/alps/etc. Being from a medical background, I was impressed w/ her description/depth when called for. W/ further reading, it did become easy to follow. I enjoyed it at all angles, and thought the end had good closure to it. I really want to give this book a 4.5, but Amazon obviously won't let me do that. As many have already said, it really is a page-turner, I do recommend it!

"From master of mystery Robert Barnard comes a brilliantly witty and piercingly observant new suspense novel featuring one of the most dysfunctional families ever to grace crime fiction. Meet the Cantelos of Leeds, England. To call the Cantelos dysfunctional is actually a wild understatement. But is one of them also a killer? Clarissa Cantelo, a skilled clairvoyant, apparently thought so. Believing that her sixteen-year-old nephew, Merlyn Docherty, was in peril, she sent him into hiding in Italy, far away from the rest of her family. She told them he was dead. It was safer that way. Now Clarissa herself has died, and Merlyn, a successful lawyer and civil servant who still lives abroad, has returned to Leeds to claim his inheritance. First, he must prove his identity. Is he really Merlyn or, as some of his long-lost relations say they suspect, is he an imposter? Merlyn doesn't mind confirming his identity, but he'd at least like to move into the house that Aunt Clarissa left him in her will while he gets to know some of his relatives. And the house may hold some clues to the Cantelos' past. What is the dreadful family secret that has upset relations between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, filling even the youngest generation with fear? If Merlyn discovers the truth, buried under decades of deception, his life may once again be in danger. Merlyn must start at the beginning if he is to find the answers. All roads seem to lead back to his grandfather, the formidable Merlyn Cantelo, renowned in the family as an object of both fear and loathing. Though the old man who caused such pain to his family died years ago, his malevolence lives on. Somebody wants young Merlyn gone. With help from police detectives Mike Oddie and Charlie Peace, Merlyn must find that person before the Cantelo curse works its evil again. Wickedly observant and full of his trademark sly twists, The Graveyard Position proves once more that Robert Barnard is in a class of his own. "

Robert Barnard, currently lives with his wife in Yorkshire. He was born in Essex on 23 November, 1936. Educated at the Royal Grammar School in Colchester and at Balliol College, Oxford, taking his Ph.D. from the University of Bergen, Norway, in 1972, he spent many years as a distinguished academic while establishing himself as one of today's most distinguished crime writers. His fascination with the pure detective story is evident in his many novels.

Merlyn Cantelo returns to his home town of Leeds. He has come back to the city to claim the house of a late aunt. An aunt, who adopted him after a tormented early childhood. His late aunt had a `gift.' She was known as a medium or as she preferred to be called a clairvoyant. She had predicted that there would be violence in Merlyn's future life and had suggested to him that he should live abroad with her distant family in Italy.

Now Merlyn has returned to Leeds, a place that has both good and bad memories for him. Now that he is back is he about to find out the real truth about his aunt's prediction . . .

Great read. Not the usual characters for Barnard, but a great read nonetheless

3 out of 5 stars One Dimensional.......2007-01-05

Robert Barnard's books are a mixed bag. This is not one of the best. Merlyn (occasionally spelled Merlin in the book I read) was mysteriously sent away from home at the age of 16 by his Aunt Clarissa because she was afraid he was in danger. With that notable exception, he has been completely out of touch with his family for over 15 years.

Upon his aunt's death, he returns. Some of the family are sceptical of his identity, but he quickly establishes his bona fides by means of DNA testing. In fact, later in the book, DNA testing becomes a quick fix to the solution of an attempted murder. As a plot twist, "never mind there's no proof or witnesses, a DNA test will prove you're guilty" is a little facile.

Much is made of the fact that Aunt Clarissa is a clairvoyant, but it doesn't really fit into the plot in any meaningful way. Also, the idea that the personalities of an entire family would be warped by a competition among the kids for allowance money is a little strange. It seems all kinds of behavior might result from that, not just that they are all competitive with each other.

In sum, pretty superficial.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Robert Barnard Mystery yet........2005-06-06

I have read only a few of Barnard's mysteries and hadnt made
up my mind about him. "Graveyard Position" cinched it for me.
Merlyn Cantelo inherits his late aunt Clarissa,s money and
home. Clarissa was a clairvoyant and just happened to be
most likely the sanest member of the totally dysfunctional
Cantelo Family. Clarisse sent Merlyn away years ago as she
feared for his safety and now hearing of her death he returns
for her funeral and finds he still has to fear for his safety-
from his own family. I don't like many present day mysteries
having mainly preferred late 1800's and early 1900's mysteries-
best ever written but I am glad I decided to read this book.
Now I will have to go out and bring myself up on other
Barnard mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars more a bittersweet family drama than an amateur sleuth tale.......2005-05-08

Attorney Merlyn Docherty returns to England after twenty years living in Brussels for the funeral of his Aunt Clarissa Cantelo, a noted spiritualist. He is also the heir to the Cantelo empire, which angers his extended family; many of whom feel he is an imposter as the real Merlyn has been assumed dead for years.

Rather than sit back while his relatives pick apart his bones like vultures and believing that a dark secret is being concealed from him, Merlyn investigates the Cantelo clan. He especially wants to learn what is being hid and to ascertain the complex coalitions so as to determine who might prove a trustworthy ally. As Merlyn begins to put together the puzzle, one of his loving relatives tries to kill him, upping the ante.

THE GRAVEYARD POSITION is more a bittersweet family drama than an amateur sleuth tale. Merlyn is the only sympathetic character as his clan is used as hyperbole as the family from hell, making the case of nurturing can be hazardous to one's well being. The support cast is so ugly especially towards Merlyn but also somewhat with one another that each illicit scorn from the reader. Thus the dialogues, which are the key device of the plot, are amusing but also overdone, losing somewhat Robert Bernard's sharp wit. Though no BONES IN THE ATTIC, fans will cherish his latest family skeletons in the closet mystery.

Carolyn Heilbrun began writing intellectual, subtly political mysteries under the pseudonym of Amanda Cross as a professor of English at Columbia University in New York. This classic example of Heilbrun's rare combination of talents finds Kate Fansler--professor of English at Harvard, another Ivy League college slightly to the north of Columbia--trying to discover who poisoned a newly-appointed female professor and why her body was left in a men's room.

Book Description

When Janet Mandelbaum is made the first woman professor at Harvard's English Department, the men are not happy. They are unhappier still when her tea is spiked and she is found drunk on the floor of the women's room. With a little time, Janet's dear friend and colleague Kate Fansler could track down the culprit, but time is running out....

This book is a classic, both within the canon of feminist mystery writing and as a wicked roman a clef. The late Carolyn Heilbrun's Kate Fansler series has some duds in it, but this book is outstanding, as are Sweet Death, Kind Death (one title) and No Word from Winifred. In addition to its other virtues, the book provides a sadly accurate picture of the fragmentation of the women's movement in the early 80's.

Generally speaking, there are two sorts of mystery novels. One gives most of its attention to the complexities of the crime and the ingenuity of its solution. The other gives much more space to development of the characters and commentary on the setting. (Ideally -- in my opinion -- the perfect mystery, like those of Sue Grafton, gives nearly equal weight to both sides of the story.) "Amanda Cross" is the nom de plume of Dr. Carolyn G. Heilbrun, who, like her protagonist, Kate Fansler, is a university professor of English in New York. This time Kate is called to Cambridge to help Janet Mandelbaum, an old acquaintance (but not really a friend) who has been named the first tenured female professor of English at Harvard. As difficult as it may be to remember, this was a really big deal in 1978, as Harvard was almost the last hold-out among prestigious American universities to develop a coed faculty as well as admitting women to the student body. Kate's somewhat manipulative friend, Sylvia Farnum, is in the story, as is her own niece, Leighton, and her old semi-lover, the laid back Moon Mandelbaum (who was also married to the late Janet twenty years before). The plot all seems a bit disconnected, not to say haphazard, and the solution is a bit of a cop-out -- or maybe not, I haven't decided. But the author certainly does a job on Harvard! This isn't Amanda Cross's best work, but it's certainly worth reading.

In this Amanda Cross mystery, Kate Fansler is approached by a complete stranger, to help a former aquaintance out of a situation that she shouldn't need rescue from. The aquaintance ends up dead of cyanide poisoning, her former husband, who is also a former lover of Kate's is accused, and Kate is asked to solve the mystery.

The setting is Harvard University, where Kate's former friend is appointed as the first full professor in the English Department over the objections of the all-male faculty. Someone spikes her drink a department party and she ends up passed out in a bathtub with a local "sister" from a commune trying to revive her. Gossip flies about the campus. Another sister from the coffeehouse commune is sent to get Kate. Kate is more entranced by the dog than the sister, but still goes to Harvard to help.

I had only one question during the whole story--WHY?

Why does Kate go to a place she hates, to teach a class she doesn't want or need to, takes a leave from a job she loves, in a place where she is respected, to help a person from her past who she really doesn't give a damn about?

As usual, the book is well written, the characters are not as well developed or sympathetic as I would have liked, but I suppose in a temporary position Kate wouldn't have gotten to know everyone all that well either. Not bad, but not her best work.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful writing but a poor mystery.......1998-12-12

In "Death in a Tenured Position," Amanda Cross (Carolyn G. Heilbrun) presents a literate mystery. Someone has left Harvard a million dollars to fund a chair in the English department for a female professor. At 1978 Harvard, the idea of women professors is still something to be viewed with, if not utter revulsion, at least significant apprehension. It is a time when "women's studies" is considered a fadish and unnecessary program. Harvard hires Janet Mandelbaum, who also disdains such things as "women's studies" and who aspires only to succeed based on merit. At the misogynistic Harvard, though, to succeed based on merit, one first must be a man. Janet thus finds herself ostracized. Soon, she finds herself drugged and left in the women's room in a compromising position.

Kate Fansler, a professor from New York, is asked to help out Janet, and Kate agrees, securing a position as a Fellow and beginning to consider the attempt to discredit Janet. Before long, though, Janet is found dead, and the police arrest someone Kate believes is innocent. Kate then turns to an unethical lawyer to help her friend while she investigates the death.

As a real-world mystery, "Death in a Tenured Position" is rather a disaster. The lawyer hired to defend the police's main suspect seems not to care at all about his client and goes to great lengths to please Kate while harming the client. What is more important, though, is that one of the characters had to have known the solution to the mystery long before the denouement and should have explained it. In short, the mystery doesn't make sense, and it doesn't work in any real sense. The mystery, however, does involve some wonderful use of English poetry and prose, complete with allusions that make it all seem obvious, albeit only after the fact.

But there is more to the novel than the mystery, and it is there that Cross succeeds admirably. In a field that is, nearly twenty years later, marked by increasing percentages of bad writing, "Death in a Tenured Position" is a remarkably well-written novel. Cross writes almost melodically, and her characters take on personalities merely by their word choice. To read a character correcting himself for saying "rather extreme," for example, is a pleasure. More to the point, though, the indictment of Harvard, which seems to be one of those all-too-frequent oxymora, the institute of higher learning mired in a pre-Elizabethan view of women, is unmitigated, unqualified, and unrepentant.

      Book Description

Representation is the subject of this book, representation taken in a series of senses, from the formal and linguistic to the social and political. Representation poses a theoretical problem that can be located in the inconsistency between two vocabularies for compositional method: one positing a “centre of consciousness” (James’s term), the other being a story of displaced agency and intermediaries, of deputies, delegates, and substitutes. What the center promises—that consciousness can be fully incarnated in a given character who will then constitute a foundation for meaning and truth in the novel—is exactly what the “delegate” acknowledges as an impossibility.

Drawing largely on the theory of representation of Jacques Derrida, this book examines the interplay between the two contradictory positions in detailed readings of James’s stories of writers and artists and his novels The Ambassadors, The Wings of the Dove, What Maisie Knew, and The Awkward Age. Throughout, the readings are organized by the supplementary logic of representation—a logic that understands that a thing standing for another thing both completes it and suggests a lack or limitation in that which it completes, and hence ultimately in itself.

            Book Description

This study offers new perspectives on Wolfgang Koeppen, a writer too often consigned to the margins of post-1945 literary history. Examining the interaction of the personal and the social in Koeppen's writings, this book demonstrates that the politics of his works are inherent to their form.

Through a series of close readings, the book explores the positive and negative aspects of liminality, a dominant trope in Koeppen's works. Stressing the thematic and formal continuities of his oeuvre, the first section illustrates how his protagonists perpetually establish a space for themselves 'in between' states. The second section examines how Koeppen negotiates with the discourse of 'nation' during two central periods of his career. It shows how his experiences in the Third Reich and his reappraisal of the years prior to 1933 determine his perspective on modernity, modernism and Germany after 1945. Having defined the location of culture in his works, the book concludes by resituating Koeppen's writings within post-war West German literary culture.

When Kay Scarpetta arrives in Richmond to investigate the death of a 14-year-old girl, she finds neither a working lab nor a support staff. Because her colleagues are embroiled an apparently unrelated rape case, Scarpetta is left alone to decode traces of evidence too small to identify except by the most thorough hunters. She follows twisting leads and strange details in order to find testimony from the dead and reveal an unbearably sad truth.

I needed this book for a class about Latin-American literature. It was cheaper on Amazon than in the school's bookstore. However, I quite like the selection of authors, the descriptions that come with them and the selection of their works.

5 out of 5 stars A definite must for Hispanic's looking to understand their respective culture........2006-02-28

A book such as this is an indispensable reference guide to vast mosaic that is Hispanic literature. This book, which will primarily be used in intermediate-advanced Spanish literature courses in college, especially in introductory courses in Hispanic literature, will give the reader an overview to the most important works by Hispanic writers starting with Nahuatl literature (the indigenous pre-Columbian peoples of the Americas), covering all of the major literary artistic periods to today.

Please note that the book is entirely in Spanish and is not meant for beginners. As a future high school Spanish teacher, I feel it to be appropriate reading for advanced high school students (AP and native speakers) and up, though one would be hard pressed to find it in use in any high school.

The book is an anthology, and therefore only selected parts of the literary works are presented.

It is a definite must for college Spanish majors, especially those readers whose roots are planted in the Americas, and, quite frankly, anyone wishing to read for themselves the history of the Americas from the vantage point of the participants,.

I can personally attest to the powerful stories contained therein. I was especially moved by the Nahuatl poetry which described the atrocities committed by the conquistadors. Though do not let that detract you or skew your view of the Spanish; all throughout history different peoples have waged wars against each other, killed "in the name of God," and the like. While this doesn't justify their actions, the conscientious readers must always keep things in context, try to understand the frame of mind and reference of the authors, and appreciate the treasures that they left for us to read, assimilate, and hopefully learn something from and change the world for the better.

Recomiendo este libro altamente a todos aquellas personas que estan interesadas en la literatura latinoamericana. Este es un excelente antologia de los diferentes trabajos y epocas de la literatura hispanoamericana.

                5 out of 5 stars Fantastico.......2004-04-29

I also used this book for a Spanish lit class in undergrad. However, I did not have as great an appreciation for that book as I do now as a Spanish teacher and M.A. candidate. As other reviewers have mentioned, the book is very comprehensive in its history, literature, and culture - I have found this book to be a wonderful reference tool to refresh my memory now and again.

                5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book.......2001-09-30

As a student who recently used this book for a Spanish Lit. class I must say that this book is by far the best that I have encountered. Not only does it cover literature from pre-colombian days but it goes all the way up until today's comtemporary writers. Futhermore each section as well as each author has an introduction which provides the reader with extra insight. Even if you are not a student, but if you are interested in Spanish literature, I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A sweet tale with appealing graphics.......2005-02-24

I am an American editor/writer married to a Dominican. I became a fan of Julia Alvarez's literary works while taking an English class on immigrant fiction. When I learned that she had written a children's book, Las Huellas Secretas (The Secret Footprints), I was thrilled. I immediately purchased a Spanish version copy to take to my seven-year-old niece in the Dominican Republic.

Alvarez draws from Dominican folklore in her tale of the "ciguapas," a mythological race that lives under the sea and comes to land only at night, after we humans go to sleep. The heroine of the story, Guapa, succumbs to her curiosity about human beings, comes ashore in the daytime, and is discovered by a picnicing family. What she eventually learns is that preconceived notions about those different than us aren't always true--that, sometimes, even those older and wiser than us (in Guapa's case, the Ciguapa queen) harbor prejudices that turn out to be wrong.

As for my niece, she loved the friendship theme (between Guapa and a human boy) and the lush, richly colored illustrations. She had fun practicing her reading skills and, although challenged by some of the vocabulary, never got bored.

I recommend this book for all Spanish-language children interested in folklore, especially readers of Dominican heritage.
