I received my product quickly, in great condition and with no problems, which is all that I wanted from my business transaction.

5 out of 5 stars Hott and suspenseful.......2007-03-30

I wont go over everything said already but this was a great book. It is a mixture of fantasy, history, erotica. It deals with conflict that people face when in love and hard choices have to be made in that way it was very realistic. Oh yeah and the sex scenes whewwwwwwwww hmmmm yummy ok so try this book it was great!!!

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and engaging story about the clash of two races.......2007-01-28

I haven't read any books by Emma Holly before and I thought I'd give this one a go. When I started it I was initially rather perturbed - it seemed like I had bought a book which was erotic fiction, not something I enjoy reading. However, I persevered and I'm glad I did. There was much more to this book than it first seemed and I thought it was very well written - I just wish there was less sex and more of the rest of the plot as that plot was actually very good.

Adrian Philips is a police Inspector in a world that's sort-of like Victorian London but slightly different. There are Bow Street Runners, gas lighting, the Queen is on the throne - but this place is actually a different country in a different world where, 30 years before, a race of other people were discovered, called Demons. The demons have started to live with the humans but there is significant distrust between the two communities. Although the demons actually have a lot of modern technology (such as cars, communication screens etc) and the humans are still in 19th century levels of technology, the demons keep a lot of their technology away from the humans.

Adrian Philips, however, is the beneficiary of some demon technology, some implants that enable him to have super-human strength when he calls upon it. This is very useful for his job as a police inspector but because he has used some demon technology his colleagues shy away from him. He works the difficult beat looking for missing persons in a dodgy area of town - some young boys seem to have gone missing and people think that the demons are taking them to feed upon their life force (something which demons can do).

Adrian finds himself rather battered after a fight and ends up being looked after by Roxanne McAllister, an artist and the illegitimate daughter of a famous opera singer. She has taken in two boys from the streets, Charles and Max, and has given them a home and made a family. She looks after Adrian for a week and nature takes its course as one would expect in a novel like this - except that there's no future in it. Roxanne is from the lower classes, her personal history makes her an outcase, and Adrian is warned to sever connection with her or his job is at risk. So he does.

Roxanne has always wondered why she is so strong and when coming face to face with a demon diplomat she discovers the answer - he is undoubtedly her father, although everyone knows demons and humans can't breed together. This adds one more obstacle in the way of a relationship between her and Adrian, especially when her father tries to initiate contact with her. When she ignores this she finds Max has been removed from her care and later she and Adrian are nearly kidnapped. What is going on with her father and the prince of the demons. Is there any possible future with Adrian despite their different social levels? And what about the fact she's half a demon, surely this makes her completely beyond the pale?

What's good about this book is the way that two caring people learn to deal with the issues that initially seem too big to get past. Although there's a lot of sex in this book there's also a lot of character building, plot unravelling and a lot of consideration of how two very different races might settle in to living together just 30 years after the discovery of each other. I would recommend this book if you don't mind reading about sexual scenes because the rest of the book makes it well worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars Hot.......2006-08-05

Holly writes the sexiest writing I have ever read. The love scenes are hot, hot, HOT!

The characters are endearing. The action is packed. The setting is vivid. Most erotic fiction is bland and corney. Not so with Holly. The plot in all her novels are serious and intiguing. The story line always comes full circle and there are never any strings left hanging. She's simply an excellent writer.

In Demon's Daughter (title DID need a bit of work, though) Inspector Adrian Philips is a bit of an outcast after he receives demon technology to help him in his job in policing the demon population (who are stronger than humans). Roxanne McAllister is a unique artist (she does porn-people, yet she's a virgin). She's also the daughter of a very famous and beautiful singer. Unfortunately, her mother is also known for her multiple and frequent sexual partners and Roxie's father. . . (come on people it's not hard to figure out, look at the title).

After Adrian ends up in Roxie's garden, badly beaten and in need of medical care, Roxie takes him in and nurses him back to health. Regardless of their backgrounds, they can't help but feel something for each other. But, problems are on the horizon.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful! Creep and Sexy...........2006-05-13

Writing a story that is both paranormal and believeable, yet with enough quality components to make the otherworld plausible is a neat trick. Add an interesting set of secondary characters and a dash of spicy--almost erotica--and you've got a terrific book. The whole world of "non-satanic" demons used here and in the Crimson City series is not a favorite of mine. No matter how it's sold--demons only have negative connections to me. Yet this one provides a strong father demon, a mixed blood daughter as the female lead and an "enhanced" male lead creating a weird demon blended family that you come to care about. Their story is so well written that you buy the whole package and enjoy a brief escape from the cares of our everday world. Definitey worth reading and a little "softer" than the usual harder-edged stuff from this author.

2 out of 5 stars This may be the last..........2005-04-13

This may be the last DOM book I ever read. I'm sick and tired of having the goddesses get into hopeless situations then getting out so easily! I mean come on! the bands on her wrists just crumble off so easily it seems like no effort! And then-this is the worst part- Lynn Ewing keeps up with that repeating nonsense...yes!!! we remember selena had a relationship w/ stanton; yes we know what vanessa's*and others'* powers are! Stop being so repetitive! I can't stand it anymore!
If you really don't care about any of the stuff i mentioned then get the book! But those of you who don't feel like wasting your money on a book that has many *big* flaws, i suggest discontinue buying the books.

3 out of 5 stars Demon Doom.......2005-03-31

This is the second book narrated from Vanessa's point of view. It also marks the return of my favorite character, Stanton. Inspite of the forced relationship between him and Serena, he and Vanessa still have a very strong bond it seems. He protects her--for Serena's sake, of course. But when he interacts with Vanessa, the chemistry is stronger than when she is with Michael, or he is with Serena.

The Daughters of the Moon have to fight a new kind of bad guy in this book, a demon. And one who used to be Maggie's lover, we learn alot of little secrets about Maggie in this book. One of which seems like it should have greater reprecussions than it is having (Spoiler: Her deal with the Atrox.) I am still frustrated by Maggie, she always seems to be with holding information, and it never works for the girls benefit.

Vanessa also has a secret talent, that gets revealed, making her even more of a paragon of perfection.

Also who exactly are these daughters of Pandora? And why do they have to be horrible--after all Pandora is an Eve like figure, so wouldn't her daughters just be all those regular girls walking around? Pandora wasn't a goddess....

5 out of 5 stars Vanessa's story continues.......2005-03-10

Right as soon as the demon appears you know which guy he is but Vanessa doesn't have a clue because Michael has been acting weird. Later she finds out that Michael is out of town and the Michael she's been seeing isn't the real Michael. But that's not all the story. She sacrifices everything to save her friends and she also discovers something new about herself.

5 out of 5 stars Daughters of the Moon- Night Shade#3.......2004-12-24

This book was the first Daughters of the Moon book I ever read.It was sooooooooo cool. I even felt that feling when Veto kissed Jimena. My cousin actually brought me into these books. She has the 7-8 book. It is about when Jimena thinks she saw her former boyfriend who everybody thinks that he died because a stupid gang killed him he turns up to Jimena when she was walking home in the rain. I think he was the only one who knew that she had premonitions. The first one she had was when she saw her best friend Mirand get killed. She really finds out that Veto was with th Artrox all this time. So now she has to face- to- face with the Artrox if she wants to save him. I am not gonna tell anymore.

4 out of 5 stars Way to easy, but has some surprises.......2004-10-01

This book was predictable but we find out about Vanessa's dark side and that each Daughter has one. We also find out more stuff about Maggie and is Michael acting wierd? : ) Read the book yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-08-25

I'm not a fan of starting new series, so I was a little hesitant to start this one. (especially since the cover came across as a little too childish) It was only by a great recommendation that I picked this one up, and thank god, I absolutely loved it! After the first chapter you will be drawn in up until the very last book.

3 out of 5 stars Decent story, poor aesthetics.......2007-08-01

It is always difficult to write a review of a fiction novel. You want to be thorough, but you don't want to give away the plot. I will focus, rather, on development and style.

The book tells the story of a young person who is unaware of her momentous heritage (the usual fantasy beginnings). Through various twists of Cruel Fate, she and her friends are cast from the Capital and have to adjust to their new lives.

Pros of the book:
1) It has an interesting socio-religious background. The main country is militantly atheistic and persecutes any kind of religious worship. Fallon (the author) very talentedly illustrates the implications of secular atheism without "preaching."

2) The story flows very well. The characters are well-developed and believable. They have their moments of heroism and pettiness.

Cons of the book:
1) The author assumes that her readers know as much about the history of Medalon as the author does, so she skips important introductions. I figured out what she was saying a few chapters later, but she could have at least explained who the Harshini were while she was talking about how important they were.

2) Overly gritty. There is a sado-masichistic scene that leaves one revolting. It added little to the story and could have been left out. True, this stuff does happen in real life. No one disputes that. However, including it in a story necessarily lowers the aesthetic value of a story. I felt like I had stayed up half the night reading this story for nothing. On the other hand, it did affect the plot-character development. The characters became more base and the plot became darker. While this makes for good postmodernism, it makes for poor aesthetics.

Conclusion:
Can I recommend the book? No. While it is better than 90% of the fantasy genre, it does not stir the reader to new heights nor inspire the reader to emulate the characters. It failed to live up to the "Tolkien test."

3 out of 5 stars (3.5 stars) Nice mytholgy, nice romance against the odds, funny Gods, way too much running and chasing!.......2007-04-24

"Medalon" the first book in the demon child trilogy is a relatively simple fantasy that just appears complicated because of the many gods and political fractions involved. However most fantasy books are like this, as is the real world, so if you can remember what country the main people are from and what religion that different countries follow you'll be fine-if not, well there's a glossary in the back of the book.

The country of Medalon decided a couple hundred years ago to be an atheist nation run by women known as sisters of the blade who are businesswomen and politicians. To bring about this perfect nation they killed off most of the pagan people who worshiped Gods (a little linguistic lesson from a real pagan-the word Pagan means "from the fields" and is essentially a nice way of saying hick) and these semi immortal fairy people the Harshini. The Harshini then went into hiding and are in the present of this book presumed dead. There are a couple other countries, two of which are pagan and hold with the gods (who are real by the way) and one which is monotheistic and ruled by a God who apparently needs to be killed-or so the other gods think. But they won't do it and the Harshini can't kill so there is a prophecy that a demon child will be born who will be half Harshini and who will kill a God.

Meanwhile in the present day in Medalon, in the citadel of the sisters of the Blade political power changes are taking place. One sister is scheming to be in charge and her children, Tarja, and his half sister R'shiel rebel and run away, find out they're not really related at all (can you see where this is going?-yeah, somehow the author manages to make it not creepy because they're not brother and sister at all and he's ten years older so they didn't grow up together...it's actually kind of sweet) and organizing the pagans into a rebellion. Meanwhile one half Harshini is searching the world for the demon child alternately helped and annoyed by the gods (who are hilarious.)

This is a pretty decent book and I really enjoyed it, except for one really annoying thing. Tarja and R'shiel are constantly having to rescue each other. I mean CONSTANTLY! Like one of them would rescue the other and then it would fail and they'd be a in a worse situation and they have to start all over. It's like that for the entire book. It gets old. I mean there is some interesting stuff in the rescues and while waiting for them and in between them there's some romance and good mythology and political maneuvering and funny scenes with the Gods, but it doesn't really break even.

In the end, three point five stars. I'll definitely read the next one though, which will hopefully have less running and chasing!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-07-23

Let me start off by saying that this is a great book. I usually go to the book store and paruse books by the art on the cover. I picked it up and started reading, and after a few pages I became hooked. This is one of those books where you really care what happens to the characters, the plotline is epic, and there are plenty of twists and turns. Though the plot is a bit generic; woman is 'chosen' to destroy a god, save the world, etc etc, that's pretty much a staple in every fantasy book i've ever read. It's the character interactions and situations that make fantasy books, and this one does very well.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2006-05-20

I received a free copy of this book at a science fiction convention. It is a fairly standard story about an orphan discovering her origins and maturing into her role on the world stage. As such the main character isn't terribly interesting, in fact, on several occasions I wanted to punt her into next week. The supporting cast is more interesting and the side plots intrigued me enough to read the second book. On the whole, I would say if I happened across this book in an airport gift shop, I would buy it.

                Book Description

Hailed by Salman Rushdie as a "brilliantly innovative thriller-writer," Philip Kerr is the creator of taut, gripping, noir-tinged mysteries that are nothing short of spellbinding. The first book of the Berlin Noir trilogy, March Violets introduces readers to Bernie Gunther, an ex-policeman who thought he'd seen everything on the streets of 1930s Berlin—until he turned freelance and each case he tackled sucked him further into the grisly excesses of Nazi subculture. Hard-hitting, fast-paced, and richly detailed, March Violets is noir writing at its blackest and best.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars As good a detective novel as you will ever read.......2006-01-04

From page one the strength of narrative and the wisecracking of the PI Bernhard "Bernie" Gunther is a detective novel readers dream. Philip Kerr is able to bring 1936 Berlin alive it all it's nationalistic insanity. His ability to describe how the Nazi party had taken total control of this nation is remarkable.
He has picked-up the nuance of how people delude themselves into believing what they are told, no matter how implausible.

Right from the start you know that Gunther is as cynical as you can be, without being arrested by the Gestapo (which he is at a later point of the book). The way he weaves the disillusionment of the average German, while at the same time showing how they just acquiest to what was going on. Unlike most books about Germany at this time, he presents the Nazi's as people not cardboard cutouts. He does, though, show them in all their sadism and brutality. But it is a brutality that has become humdrum and expected. No one is surprised by what is going on. Everyone is just hoping it doesn't happen to them.

Especially appealing is Gunther's gumshoe comments and asides as to what is going on. At one point he gets out of his car and gives the "Hitler salute" when the party standard is paraded by. His comment, "it's not worth taking a beating for not saluting". He tells of a circulating joke, that next to Jews, Hitler hates homosexuals and cripples the most. The punch line is that everyone but Hitler knows that his Minister of Propaganda, Joseph "Joey" Goebbels has a club foot.

You can just imagine Robert Mitchum or Humphrey Bogart playing this "fleabite" PI. He drinks, he smokes, and he's like a junkyard dog when it comes to doing his job. There are great descriptions of the war between Reichfurher Himmler, the head of the Gestapo and SS and Prime Minister of Prussia Hermann Goering.

The ending, is just a pregnant pause, we know that there are two more books in the "Berlin Noir" trilogy, and that's the way that Kerr leaves us at the end of this book. You know you have to read the other two.

                5 out of 5 stars A Kind of Palimpsest.......2005-09-03

Use of the mystery tale genre illuminates this dark historical period. I will give a thumbnail sketch of some of the events in the story. The narrator, Bernhard Gunther, a private detective, is 38 years old. A friend, Dagmarr, appears at the beginning and the end of the story. In her initial appearance she is to marry Johannes, a sports flyer. The term sports flyer is a cover for the rearmament taking place in Germany.

Bernhard is approached by a lawyer and he distrusts lawyers. Hermann Six, one of the major Ruhr industrialists, has suffered a loss. His daughter has been murdered. Grete Six married Paul Pfarr in 1930. Three nights before the interview with Bernhard the couple died in a fire at their house. Prior to the fire the safe had been ransacked. There were jewels in the safe. Six wants Bernhard Gunther to recover them.

Pfarr had been an SS man. Bernhard finds out that Goering might buy hot jewelry since he has a passion for owning expensive things. Everybody in Germany was somebody different before March 1933. In Berlin Gestapo headquarters used to be an art school. Bernhard calls a crime reporter friend, seeking some background on the couple. Before becoming a private investigator Bernhard had worked for Kripo, a police agency.

A March Violet is someone who became a Nazi to go along and get along. In the Weimar years Berlin had seemed like one of the most exciting cities in the world. Bernhard explains that policing like autobahn construction and informing is one of the new German growth industries. Corruption in one form or another is a feature of life under National Socialism. Bernhard pays the pathologist for information about the manner of death of the murder victims. The pathologist says he is being forcibly retired because he is not political.

Rings were institutions of organized crime in Germany. Gunther learns from an informant that the safe cracker in the case is a member of a ring. The informant is afraid to give him information. Banned writers are back in the shops because of the Olympiad. Bernhard Gunther learns that Kurt Mutschmann may have opened the safe. Gunther is picked up and brought to see Goering who tells Gunther he can lend him RED HARVEST by Dashiell Hammett. Gunther is asked to find Gerhard Von Greis, someone who functioned as a purchasing agent for Goering and who has been missing for a week. Bernhard Gunther learns from a ring leader that a killer has followed him and his assistant, a former newspaper reporter, Inge, to a cafe.

It turns out that Bernhard is actually investigating two crimes since the safe had contained jewels and papers. The deceased son-in-law possessed papers showing that Hermann Six had ties to organized crime. Gunther discovers that Six's daughter was not killed in the fire. Then he is in the hands of the Gestapo since Heydrich wants him to go to Dachau to trace down the papers in the control of Kurt Mutschmann. Interestingly Kurt decided that hiding in Dachau would be a good idea and so he had done something in order to be arrested. Bernhard finds Kurt dying in the infirmary of the camp. Because Bernhard was kind to him, he tells him where to find the papers. In the end Bernhard Gunther concludes that he has gotten used to living in a world out of joint.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant start to a wonderful triliogy.......2005-05-11

March Violets is a brilliant start to a great trilogy. The descriptions of wartime and post-war occupied Germany mixed with hard-boiled detective fiction is facinating. Geared more towards the fans of good old detective noir than for the fans of cold-war spy thrillers.

2 out of 5 stars Read Robert Harris instead!.......2004-10-11

Do yourself a favor... read FATHERLAND by Robert Harris instead if you like this sort of thing. I was very, very disappointed with how predictable this book was. It was written with the knowledge of what happened, but not written as if the characters didn't know what happened.

I give it a 2 stars instead of a 1 because I liked how Kerr handled some of his descriptions of Berlin, but I would not recommend Kerr, and this series, to anyone.
