This Old House meets Murder, She Wrote in this Sarah Graves mystery set on the coast of Maine. Jacobia Triptree, onetime financial advisor to the Mob, finds her quiet retreat shattered by the unwelcome discovery of a dead man in the Victorian pile she is in the midst of restoring. That he has an ice pick in his forehead only confirms her suspicion that the death was brought about by something other than natural causes. When her closest friend, Ellie, confesses to having done the deed, Jacobia is convinced she is lying and determines to save Ellie from herself by finding the real killer.
The victim turns out to be a local boy who'd done well enough to be featured in the pages of Fortune magazine. Ellie's ostensible reason for her uncharacteristic violence is that he bankrupted her parents. Between bouts of waterproofing the basement and replacing floor joists, Jacobia sets out to find a more believable motive and murderer.
The mystery itself is not that complicated, and as Jacobia digs deeper under her house and into the past, the truth eventually surfaces. Graves sufficiently amuses, however, with delightful characterizations of Jacobia's former connections and the local heroes who assist her in her projects of rescuing Ellie and putting her house together. Jake's asides regarding the stock market, as well as the details of home restoration, also provoke the occasional smile. Graves is at her best delineating the tension between the small town's good guys and the federal investigators (and tourists) from far away. A gentle read, despite the shadow of the Mafia, and entertaining enough for bedtime diversion. --K.A. Crouch
Book Description
dead cat bounce n. Stock market jargon for a small, temporary rise in a stock's trading price after a sharp drop.
Since she bought her rambling old fixer-upper of a house, Jacobia Tiptree has gotten used to finding things broken. But her latest problem isn't so easily repaired. Along with the rotting floor joists and sagging support beams, there's the little matter of the dead man in Jake's storeroom, an ice pick firmly planted in his cranium.
Not much happens in her tiny Maine town, but that's about to change. Jake's unknown guest turns out to be a world-famous corporate raider, local boy turned billionaire Threnody McIlwaine. When Jake's best friend, quiet and dependable Ellie White, readily confesses to the murder, cops and journalists swarm into snowbound Eastport.
Jake smells a cover-up, and begins poking into past history between McIlwaine and Ellie's family. But someone doesn't like nosy neighbors...and Jake's rustic refuge may become her final resting place.

Too many confessions..........2007-08-26
Jacobia Tiptree and her son, Sam, now live in Eastport, ME. Jacobia's neighbor, Ellie has helped her settle into the town and the community. When Jacobia goes to check the storeroom, she finds a body on the floor. Next thing she knows, Ellie White has confessed to the crime, there's no bail for Ellie, George Valentine is trying to shore up her storeroom and floor to handle the police traffic without caving in. Ellie wants Jacobia's help but doesn't want to see her. Everyone hated the victim, Threnody McIlwaine, including Ellie's father and mother who just lost all the money they had on a stock deal McIlwaine tipped them to. The FBI look like they're steamrolling Ellie to jail, and maybe a death penalty, and Jacobia doesn't know what to do next.
Once more we're afloat on a sea of clues. But these clues only make sense if you know a lot of the background and history of the people and the town. As readers we're in the same boat as Jacobia, who also didn't grow up in Eastport. We learn the ins and outs of the character's history as Jacobia learns it. As an Mainer in exile, I especially enjoy the bits of information that are dropped so casually into the background of the story that allow me to feel like I'm on a mini-vacation as well as helping vicariously to solve a murder.
The characters are believable and, as usual, multi-faceted and hard to predict as are most people. The clues are there and can be seen clearly once the book is finished. Well written with tight plotting, this is an older book well worth another read or finding a new audience if you've not read Sarah Graves before.
Great setting for a mystery.......2007-08-02
Former financial advisor, Jacobia Triptree, has left the urban sprawl of New York for the beauty and serenity of the Maine coast. The serenity is shattered, however, when she discovers a dead body in the old home that she is restoring. The victim is a wealthy but unethical businessman who has a lot of enemies. The police figure that their job is made much easier when Jacobia's best friend, Ellie, admits to the murder. Jake is convinced that Ellie is innocent and she sets out to find the real killer. Sarah Graves and her heroine have a wicked sense of humor which enhances this "cozy", as does the wonderful setting of coastal Maine. The book has some interesting characters, such as the Can Man who picks up old tin cans and has a minimal vocabulary, and Ellie's "mommy dearest", Hedda. There are now 10 books in this series and I look forward to working my way through all of them.
No Cats Where Harmed in the Making of This Book.......2006-01-30
Former stock broker extraordinaire Jacobia "Jake" Tiptree has traded her life of high pressure trades for the peaceful quite of Eastport, Maine, a quiet town on an island almost as far east as you can go. She's bought an antique home in need of great repair and fills her days trying to fix all the problems, from squeaky doors to leaking plumbing and rotten floors.
One day, Jake goes to her storeroom and finds a man dead, lying on the floor. As if it weren't shocking enough to have a stranger dying in her house, her best friend, Ellie White, immediately confesses to the murder.
The victim turns out to be Threnody McIlwaine, a local boy turned corporate raider billionaire. Even given his worldwide fame, Ellie did have a motive. Threnody had just tricked her family out of a fortune, leaving them bankrupt. With the prosecutors ready to act on the case to keep the media happy, Jake realizes that Ellie is going to be railroaded into a long prison term.
There's just one problem, however. Ellie is too quiet to commit murder. Convinced her friend is innocent, Jake sets out to figure out who really killed the man. Even in a town as small as Eastport, the list of suspects is rather long. It will take all of Jake's abilities to sort through the clues to find the truth.
This is the debut of what has become a highly successful mystery series, and it's easy to see why. Jake is a likeable and capable heroine. This is someone who could easily become a friend in real life, and spending time with her is fun. While Ellie isn't in much of the book, she is a likeable character as well. I look forward to getting to know her better in future books in the series. The other towns people we get to know were nice assets to the plot and created a feeling of community I loved.
The only strike against the book is the plot. It seems to meander a bit at the beginning, taking it's own sweet time getting started. Once it does, however, it tells an exciting story with some nice twists that kept me confused until the very end. The title of the book refers to some stock market jargon. Not only is this a reference to Jake's previous job, but it also has an impact on the case.
Even when the plot is slow, the writing style keeps you pulled into the story with its vivid descriptions and laid-back story telling. It fits a story taking place in a small, cozy town and I wouldn't change it for anything.
The setting itself is great. The small town is warm and inviting, even in the middle of the bad storm they face over the course of the book.
Even in the debut, it's easy to see why this series has won the hearts of so many readers. I look forward to visiting Jake Tiptree and Eastport, Maine, again real soon.
Gem of a book!.......2003-10-11
I love reading mystery stories when I'm ready for a light and easy read. I have read quite a few of them and I am thrilled to add Sarah Graves to my "must read" list. Many "light" fiction books feel like you have just eaten cotton candy -- nothing to show for it and still unsatisfied. This book was just the opposite! The characters were well developed, the plot was enjoyable and the writing was very good. I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series and sharing my find with other fans of the mystery genre.
What a delightful book to read (either on the beach or in front of a warm fire with a cup of tea) when you just want to have some fun!
Dead Cat Bounce.......2003-02-12
I bought and read this book based on a positive review I had read on the internet and am glad that I did so. The main character, Jacobia, grew on me as I read further into the book, although I have to admit I did not care for her at first, thinking her to be a bit judgmental and a little whiny. I learned to appreciate her and I hope that in the following books, we can see more of her background including her financial work with some questionable characters; now that would make some interesting storytelling. I agree with a previous reviewer in that I found nothing to like about her ex-husband, and everything to like about her boyfried; in fact, I found them almost too one-dimensional (evil ex-husband & perfect boyfriend), but not so much as in many of the cookie-cutter mysteries on the market today. I will definitely be picking up the next books in the series to read in the near future.

The union of two predestined warriors in a magical land........2007-09-25
A Restless Knight (The Dragons of Challon, Book 1)
A beautiful romance delivered in an engrossing plot. I loved the character portrayals of the legendary Black Dragon, Lord Julian Challon and Lady Tamlyn MacShane, the mistress of Glenrogha. Two strong yet vulnerable warriors who are predestined for each other. Deborah MacGillivray's narrative deftly illustrates their profound love for each other.
Ms MacGillivray's in-depth insight into Scottish Medieval period is ever present in her detailed descriptions and certainly conveyed me to the magical ambiance of Glenrogha and of the period.
The Challon saga continues with In Her Bed (The Dragons of Challon, Book 2) Damian St Giles and Lady Aithinne Ogilvie, another must read!
PERFECT HERO, MAGNIGICENT HEROINE WONDROUS STORY.......2007-09-15
The fact that this book already has over 40 reviews from enchanted readers tells you that this is an unforgettable story with incredible characters, unbelievable emotion and great sexual tension.
With fabulous narrative and a beautifully developed plot, the story begins the saga of the Dragons of Challon. Set in the period of Scotland's history, full of bloodshed and cruelty at the hand of English King Edward, known as Longshanks, it is a time of savagery but also a time where out of Scotland's darkest hour emerges the face of William Wallace, as a victorious champion for his people.
The story revolves around an English Knight, Julian of Challon, who has lost favor with his English King and the youngest daughter of a Scottish Laird, Tamlyn MacShane. Julian is fleeing the horrors of Berwick, a town massacred by Longshanks to teach a lesson to the Scottish people. The horrors beheld by Julian and two his two bastard brothers is unimaginable - he is plagues by horrid nightmares and he carries the guilt of the death of his youngest brother Christian that also perished at Berwick.
Tamlyn, the youngest of three sisters and gifted with fey knowledge, is awestruck by the visions that she is able to see from Julian's past. In her dreams, she relives Julian at the battle of Berwick and witnesses the death of Christian, so she is aware of the unbelievable pain that Julian is carrying inside.
The development of the story and its characters will leave you breathless with its beauty. Both Julian and Tamlyn are reincarnated lovers from a pagan time and the fey magik is sprinkled throughout the story.
The splendor and lore of the Scottish highlands is retold here with a magickal wand. You can almost smell the heather on the hills and feel the mists of the Loch envelop you as you read. A truly magnificent novel, skillfully executed by this accomplished story teller. You will be waiting with baited breath for all the continuing chapters in the Dragons of Challon.
The story of Damian St Giles, Julia's cousin and of Lady Aithinne Ogilvie, also Tamlyn's cousin is told in the next book "In her Bed" which is already out in paperback.
everything I could want in a Scottish Medieval.......2007-07-20
Set in the year before the body of the movie Braveheart takes places, an English warrior is sent to claim the valley of Glen Shane. The peaceful valley is protected by a magic fog, which keeps all away--except the Black Dragon of Challon. Julian Challon is war weary, he is aging, want a home, sons. He still grieves for the death of his younger brother, just a year or so before. A man who has been a soldier too long, coming to the tranquil holding that is now his feels like coming home. At the end of the journey is Lady Tamlyn MacShane. She is a strong-willed woman, yet has a tender heart...and she is a witch. Just what Julian needs to heal his torn soul.
A wonderful romance that leaves me hungry to the next book in the series.
Just plain wonderful!!.......2007-07-02
Good story, wonderful romance and yummy love scenes. I can't wait for the next book "In Her Bed".
A Breathtakingly Beautiful book!.......2007-02-12
There is no way you could read this book without experiencing everything the characters do. The descriptions are so vivid you'll see the scenes and feel the mist and hear the crackle of the fire. This writer is a definite artist and a automatic buy for me from now on. I loved the characters and was rooting for them from the start. I can't wait for her next book.

A Knight to Remember.......2007-08-15
This is a great book by a very talented author. It grabs your attention on the first page and holds it until the end. Her wording provides such colorful detail, you can close your eyes and actually 'see' her story.
not the greatest but still good.......2007-04-10
i liked this book. i liked the characters and found the parts of the story very amusing. the men were typical of the time, but our hero at least (along with a few others) learned that women aren't stupid and actually can have meaningful input into their own lives and the lives of those around them.
that being said, parts of the book were odd - i felt like i was missing something and just getting a quick synopsis, while other parts of the story dragged on. and our hero was a bit dim witted about somethings, but i guess that is to be expected considering the time period during which this story takes place.
all in all, not the best read, but not bad - i would recommend kingdom of dreams by mcnaught (as did another reviewer) hope you enjoy whatever book you pick :)
What are all the 5 stars for?.......2006-07-14
Have any of the other reviewers actually read a well written medieval romance? The romance? Its not here! What does Hugh do to woo Edlyn? Nothing! Just tries to force her into telling him she loves him. The *love* scenes are horribly written. Probably the worst I've ever read. They're over in a blink of an eye and its more like love'm and leave'm than anything else. You don't get the feeling that these too are growing to love each other in the book and that's the main problem -cause its supposed to be a romance!
I gave it 2 stars because it was a well written story and there were some funny scenes. I liked the book overall, but not as a romance -isn't that the point?
If you want to read an excellent medieval romance read Kindom of Dreams by Judith McNaught or anything medieval by Julie Garwood (The Bride, Ransom etc)
The Return of Her First Love.......2004-04-20
After her second husband was hung for treason, Lady Edlyn and her two sons were cast out of their home with little more than the clothes on the backs. Having nowhere else to go, they seek shelter at the convent she had financially assisted.
Edlyn, a skilled herbalist, now treats the battle wounds of the men the nuns nurse back to health. But on one of her trips to the dispensary, Edlyn discovers a critically injured knight, accompanied by his manservant who insists she tend his master's wounds in secret. She remembers the knight as Hugh de Florisoun, the love of her girlhood. A lot has happened to Edlyn since then at the hands of men, and she has become cynical regarding their capacity for love and honor. She brings Hugh back from the brink of death with her healing skills, and the declaration of her past love. Hugh, who has just been made an earl and given an estate by the prince, wishes to repay his debt to her by insisting they marry. Reluctantly, Edlyn becomes his bride, and agrees to run his household and submit to his passion, but withholds her heart. Hugh has never backed down nor lost a battle, and he's determined to emerge the victor in this also.
This is the sequel to ONCE A KNIGHT where we were first introduced to Lady Edlyn and Hugh de Florisoun. While this isn't one of my favorites by Ms. Dodd, it was still a very good story and definitely worth the read. The humor in this book was wonderful. My favorite scene was when Hugh found Edlyn after she had been kidnapped shortly after their marriage. I still laugh when I think about it. The secondary character of Richard also added some good moments as well.
I think my only two complaints would be Edlyn came across as being rather cold to me, which was understandable considering her history. However, it seemed like it took forever for her to realize and admit her love for Hugh, even to herself. And at the end, she still seemed a little too reserved. The other problem was even though I did believe they had fallen in love, I didn't feel the intensity of their passion for each other, at least not as strong as I have in most of Ms. Dodd's other novels. Again, that may relate back to my feeling Edlyn was too reserved for too long. But despite those couple of issues, this story still deserves a four star rating, and I would definitely recommend it.
Worthy of 10 stars! I wil surely remember this knight :).......2001-11-12
My first book by this author and I picked it up on a whim. Boy am I glad I did! Unbelievably awesome is all I can say to describe this heartfelt book filled with adventure and pure heart-stopping romance, the kind that makes your toes curl and sigh...
~Lady Edlyn is a skilled herbalist fallen from grace and is forced to accept what little charity she can get from the generous abby that has taken her in. She goes into her place that she finds solice in, her herbal 'kitchen', and is shocked when a man holds a dagger to her throat demanding she tend to a fallen knight he has hidden in her room!
Edlyn is in for a surprise when she discovers who the wounded knight is, her long ago love she has not seen in years! She saves his life but now the warrior wants to 'save' her. Save her from a life of charity and drugery, but she will not hear of it!
Hugh de Florisoun hasn't forgotten the love Edlyn bore him so long ago nor has he forgotten how he loved her from afar. How had she been reduced to this life? A Lady? A noblewoman of high breeding? The answer comes to him and he knows he must hide a deep secret that will turn her against him forever. For he had something to do with her misery...will his love render past mistakes and past grudges absent or will it make them worse?
Filled with battles and knights and the politics of war in Medieval England-1265, this touching story of treason, lies, deception and love is just what makes it a classic now on my keeper shelf. Hugh is a true knight in shining armor and the things he does for Edlyn will make you sigh and your heart to skip a beat...he must heal her broken heart and replace her fear and hatred of men with his undying love...true chivalry.
Completely unbelieveable and a sure keeper! I loved this book as much as Judith McNaught's tale "Kingdom of Dreams", and I never thought any book written in this time period would turn my head exceptionally as that one did, but I stand corrected. "A Knight to Remember" is fantastic and Hugh is definately going to make you remember him long after the book is closed...

Highly recommended.......2002-11-20
Funny and hot! The heroines are adventurous and the heroes are so sexy! I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romantic comedy.
Ugh. I did not like this book........2002-11-09
I gave it two stars instead of one because the second story didn't grate on my nerves as much as the first one. But neither of them were very good.
First off, the "royal" thing seems phony and forced. Blech. Make us care, a little more, please. Because I didn't care about the royal angle in these stories. It didn't really push the plots along that much at all.
Secondly, the "Mary Poppins" character that pops in and out of these two sisters' lives is annoying. She's not in the stories enough for us to really understand her, she's just in there enough to irritate and interrupt. I didn't like her.
The first tale ("A Royal Mess") had a heroine that I didn't like very much. Oh, I found her tolerable eventually, but she seemed like a big pain for the most part. The story did have some strengths to it (I found the "pity pets" angle amusing) but for the most part, it just did not ring true to me. The ending was laughably weak, and absurd. I cringed as I read it.
And, dare I say it? While I am accustomed to these kind of romance novels having love scenes that might be called "spicy" or "hot and sexy", the first tale's love scenes ventured a little too closely (in my estimation) into just plain "dirty". As I read, I couldn't help thinking, "I'm reading a dirty book!" I guess it's a "Your mileage may vary" sort of thing (and I do admit to being a bit on the prudish side) but we all have our limits, and this book obviously pushed past mine.
The second tale was marginally better, with a heroine that was a little more comprehensible and not quite so annoying. The hero was OK, but I tired of hearing him described as a "badass cop" (oh puleeeeze) when his being a policeman really wasn't that huge of a part of the plot. Sure, it helped move along the beginning of the story, but he could have easily been a variety of other professions, and the story would have been just about the same.
The romance seemed forced, and "true love" came too quick. Too "fairy tale", even for a silly romantic comedy. And, did I mention, neither of these stories were all that funny? Because they weren't.
Breaking royal molds -- Very highly recommended.......2002-10-03
Author Jill Shalvis takes advantage of a continuity series and a dash of magic to create a dazzling romantic romp in this Duets combination: A ROYAL MESS and HER KNIGHT TO REMEMBER. These nonconformist and resourceful princesses break all royal molds as they land themselves in marvelously unexpected escapes. While their heroes might be the perfect princes, it takes more to capture a princess' heart than just puckering up. In addition, readers will find it impossible to resist a princess on the plump side of average, or a tomboy decked in pink frills, especially when trouble follows everywhere. Furthermore, these heroes are everyday working Joes with the kind of hearts to prove themselves worthy of royalty. Indeed, Shalvis once again proves her gift for dramatic flair with this amusing duet: A ROYAL MESS and HER KNIGHT TO REMEMBER come very highly recommended.
A ROYAL MESS: Cowboy Timothy Banning would rather sleep than chat with the leather-clad juvenile delinquent next him on the flight home to Texas. When he learns the silver-studded, spiked beauty is twenty-four rather than twelve, however, Tim cannot continue to ignore her. Especially when her fear of flying leads to the impulsive gesture of holding her hand. That moment later leads to rescuing her in the rain when a thief disappears with her ID and baggage. But Tim refuses to believe Natalia Brunner really is a princess when he invites her home for a few days so she can get back on her feet.
HER KNIGHT TO REMEMBER: Princess Andrea Brunner despises the layers of pink ruffles that comprise her bride's maid dress as much as police officer Kyle Moore dislikes his pink cummerbund. Then a thug with a gun interrupts their fittings and Andrea saves Kyle from the bad guy. Unfortunately, Kyle does not feel very appreciative after she bites him twice and refuses to follow his orders. But he had best watch his step, or Kyle will find himself swept away by this princess who refuses to do hysterics or go into shock when faced with a gun.
