"Qwill's on his way to Scotland--and on his way to solving another purr-plexing mystery. But this time Koko's nowhere the scene of the crime. He and Yum Yum are back in Pickax being coddled by a catsitter...but Koko won't sit still once Qwill's traveling party returns--minus one member. He's behaving oddly, and Qwill knows what that means: Koko may have been miles away from the murder scene, but he's just a whisker away from cracking the case! "

I love these books!.......2007-01-09
All of "the cat who..." novels are great! For some reason, I find reading them comforting and calming... They're a good read and I find the characters interesting. I so look forward to reading them after a long, stressful day.
The Cat.......2006-07-05
It was a charming story but hardly great literature. Enjoyable. I read it because of the Scotland info as I am leaving in a few weeks for my first trip to Scotland and thought it would be a fun story to read beforehand. I was not disappointed. I'm also a cat lover so always enjoy the cats in these stories.
Last of the best ones.......2006-04-04
If you read more than a few Cat Who's you will find them becoming comfortable, like another "Lake Woebegon." There's not much suspense, mystery, thrill, or romance left by now, but increasing numbers of "tall tales" of Moose County (now collected in a new book) and amusing characters who all seem to have "hearts of gold" whatever their pseudo-rough veneer (except of course for the murderer, almost incidentally). While Qwill, our cozy billionaire journalist and lead character, carefully never says ill of another, there's just enough acerbic comment on somebody's part to keep these stories from terminal cuteness. Besides cat-lovers (especially SIAMESE cat-lovers), these stories will please admirers of the Far North, Arts and Crafts, and things Scottish. Indeed, The Cat Who Wasn't There takes place most entirely in Scotland, which is why it's one of the better ones, since it forces Qwill into new surroundings. The Cat Who Moved a Mountain is one of my favorites for the same reason, besides providing an intriguing other rural alternative to Moose County.
Although there is a comfortable and appealing continuity of characters and back stories from book to book, they might become soporific if you read them one right after another. They are bonbons for the mind, best not overdosed. The series is one you can let kids of any age discover and enjoy, too. The whole family can read them, and perhaps the allusions to historical people, music, styles, and places may excite some additional interest among your young ones!
Haggis and Neeps All Around.......2005-07-18
Some regular readers of this series find the Moose County setting to be somewhat dull while others love the eccentric people and odd places that make up Moose County. I tend to fall into the second category but this book contains both home and away settings so everybody should be pleased.
Jim Qwilleran has just rushed home from his summer retreat in the Potato Mountains because a prowler has accosted his lady friend Polly Duncan. He has hardly settled back into life in Pickax City when Polly informs him that a group of Moose County residents are planning a trip to Scotland. Since Polly is going and since, as he informs everyone he sees, his mother was a Mackintosh, Qwilleran decides to sign up for the trip himself.
Once the group arrives in Scotland everything is a blur as Irma Hasselrich takes them through the Highlands and Western Isles at a breakneck speed. That is until one of their number has an apparent heart attack and dies. To make things even worse, their bus driver mysteriously disappears with some of their luggage. This odd coincidence and the fact that the deceased had been closely associated with the bus driver sets Qwilleran's mustache to tingling. Even more odd, when the ace reporter calls home to check on the cats he finds out that Koko had let out a blood curdling yowl at the exact moment that the member of the touring party had died.
When they arrive back in Moose County Qwilleran starts to sniff around and begins to formulate a theory. Unfortunately, the cats do not agree with his theory and both of them start to leave all of the clues that they can think of. Koko even makes a series of mad dashes that end with him plowing into Qwilleran like a mad bull in an apparent attempt to push the amateur sleuth in another direction. In the end of course, Qwilleran and his feline friends solve the mystery but not before Yum Yum ends up in a very dangerous situation.
This is one of the more engaging books in this series and the mystery plays a larger part in this plot that it does in some of the other books. The descriptions of Scotland are marvelous and the sometimes rather odd Scottish diet is well described. The reader is also introduced to some more residents of Moose County like the Chisholm sisters who have a huge collection of teddy bears and also the new director of the Community Theater, Dwight Somers. I suppose that Mrs. Braun had to introduce some new residents of Moose County since she keeps killing off the old ones. The Community Theater by the way is producing "Macbeth", which is in part responsible for the group's trip to Scotland.
I just love Moose County and I also love Scotland so there isn't much about this book that I didn't like, although I was mighty worried about Yum Yum for a little while. Along with the new characters, several old friends make appearances and this book is just really an enjoyable read.
Pay no mind to reviewer MISTRESS OF FURRY...........2004-01-25
she obviously has not read the "Cat Who..." series...I have read 18 of the series and have thoroughly enjoyed everyone single one of them. Koko & Yum Yum are an intricate part of each story and while the series is not completely about cats, they do play a major role in the life of the story! Anyone who is a cat lover can relate and appreciate their antics in this wonderful series! I would HIGHLY recommend to Mistress of Furry to start from the beginning because, as you can see from the other reviews, she stands alone in her opinion!

The Cat Who series.......2000-06-03
Ms. Braun's books are like eating peanuts--gotta read them all! Unlike some mysteries where the cat is a minor player, her cats share the limelight equally with their mustachioed "companion", James ("Jim") Quilleran. Koko, the male of the Siamese pair, has an uncanny sense for solving mysteries, for which he tries to give clues to "Jim". The stories are handled with finesse, no bad language, and not too graphically gory. I suggest you purchase them in order of publication date, to be able to follow the series better, although, they can be read independantly. A must-read for both the cat lover AND the mystery lover! You can't help but turn the "next page"....Absolutely enthralling!
THE CAT WHO MOVED A MOUNTAIN.......2000-05-17
I HAVE 17 "CAT WHO" BOOKS AND LOVE EACH ONE. NO VILE LANGUAGE, GOOD VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR. ALSO LILLIAN JACKSON BRAUN IS AN OUTSTANDING WRITER, PLUS BEING SOMEONE WHO KNOWS THE DISPOSITIONS AND ANTICS OF CATS. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW MANY BOOKS THERE ARE AND IS THERE A SEQUENCE TO FOLLOW WHEN READING THEM? I HAVE READ EACH OF MINE TWO & THREE TIMES AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE NEXT ONE TO BE ISSUED. I AM CURRENTLY READING THE CAT WHO MOVED A MOUNTAIN AND FIND IT HAS MORE MYSTERY THAN OTHERS.
The Cat Who Robbed A Bank.......2000-04-08
Like all of Lillian Jackson Braun's books this one captures and holds your attention from beginning to end. I started reading her books a few years ago with The Cat Who Could Read Backwards and was hooked. I read all of her books in our local public library and then proceded to buy all the others, read them quickly and donate them to the library so I can go back and read them whenever I want. I eagerly await each new book she writes and only wish we could have a new one each month.
The Cat Who series.......2000-03-09
Delightful mysteries that keep you asking for more. I read one and kept searching yard sales and used book stores til I could find all of them so I could start at the beginning and work my way through the whole series. Any that were missing I was able to get through Amazon.com and now keep updated with gift certificates from my daughter.I anxiously await further adventures.
Entertaining!.......1999-10-22
I love all of Lillain Jackson Braun's "The Cat Who...Books" I am a great dog and cat lover AND a mystery lover. A friend recommended her books. Last Month while in a new book store, I came across her tiles. I brought all six paperbacks in stock. After almost completing them...I was addicted. I went back and ordered all the "Cat Who...." Books. I love them. I am down to the last three. I finished today "The Cat who went to Breakfast" and I have already read the next, "The Cat Who Blew the Whistle". I start the next book this evening. I am glad I didn't start these books years ago or I would go nuts waiting for the next one. I recommend them for all mystery, and pet lovers. Seeing Red with KoKo & Yum Yum.......2006-06-23
In the 12th book in The Cat Who...mystery series with KoKo and Yum Yum, James Qwilleran and his two Siamese cats move into their newly converted apple barn, and are celebrating the successful first run production by the Pickax Theatre Club. When the entire cast (except for one) shows up at Qwilleran's new home for a wrap-party and informal housewarming, he is happy to entertain many of his close friends. The party lasts well into the early morning hours, and when the last guest drives away, KoKo starts his impressive "death howl". Walking outdoors, Qwilleran learns there has been a shooting on his property, and the controversial high school principle has been murdered. Qwilleran and his amazing cats begin to investigate, and quickly dig into some truths buried in the nearby town of Lockmaster. And when Polly returns a day late from a wedding she attended in the town, Qwilleran starts to get suspicious about what is happening in Lockmaster. In between bird watching with KoKo, a cat pageant to find a look-alike for Tippy's beloved mascot, and a steeplechase, Qwilleran puts the pieces together on another murder in sleepy Moose County.
This is my favorite cozy mystery series! I had read all of the books in the past, and wanted to read them again for a second time. This time around, I have chosen to listen to them on CD, as I love the voice of George Guidall. The stories are charming, and I have fallen in love with Moose County and all of its residents. The mysteries themselves are not always very difficult to figure out...but that is not the allure of the series for many. The characters are endearing, and as you read the books in the series, you will feel like you know each one. The books are also a great read for pre-teens or those that have read and enjoyed the Nancy Drew series. I feel this series is the benchmark for many cozy mysteries today, and hope to enjoy this series for years to come. I highly recommend any (and all) of the books in this series.
The 1st book in the series is called "The Cat Who Could Read Backwards". Enjoy!
The Cat Who Knew a Cardinal.......2006-06-22
Another enjoyable quick reading mystery story by Lilian Jackson Braun featuring Qwilleran and his two Siamese cats Koko and Yum-Yum. In this episode, Hilary VanBrook, the disliked Principle of PickAx is found murdered in Qwilleran's orchard the morning after a cast party is thrown. Koko was the one to find the body and Qwilleran begins to piece together the clues. A cardinal singing outside the window holds the key to the suspect.
Henry VIII does Moose County.......2005-06-18
The 12th book of this series starts with Qwilleran settled into his new home, an old apple barn that has been restored and turned into living quarters. The upper beams are about forty feet above the ground and the cats are in seventh heaven. Qwilleran's other project, building a community theater, has also been completed and a successful run of "Henry VIII" has just finished. When the director, school principal Hilary VanBrook had proposed this play nobody thought it would fly, but the unpopular director had pulled it off in high fashion.
Following the final performance the cast and crew descended on Qwilleran's barn for the cast party. As was normal, the much-maligned VanBrook kept pretty much to himself but for some reason Koko found him very interesting. Once the party guests had all departed, Koko called Qwilleran's attention to a single car that was still outside. Going out to investigate, Qwilleran found a body with a very fresh gunshot wound inside the abandoned car. Determined to mind his own business this time the former reporter called the police and tried to stay out of the investigation. Koko however would have none of that and started leaving clues.
Despite Koko's clues however, Qwilleran continued his hands off approach except for sniffing around the victim's house looking for an old book. Finally though, Qwilleran gave in and started to sniff around because a friend of his was being falsely accused of the crime. This time our amateur sleuth solves the mystery on his own, not picking up on Koko's clues until it was all over. Yum Yum actually provides the most important clue, although completely by accident and once again the cats rush in to save the day when Qwilleran gets into deep trouble.
Along the road to solving this murder Qwilleran runs into several sub-plots that add a great deal to the story. There is a suicide that may or may not be connected to the murder, a cat beauty pageant that turns into a riot and a horse race down in Lockmaster. On top of everything else, Qwilleran and Polly seem to be on the outs and Qwilleran is sure that the librarian has a new love interest.
Like the previous books in this series, this book is filled with quirky and fun characters and features the wonderful backdrop of Moose County. The interaction between the characters is cleaver and imaginative and the cats are superbly portrayed. I am also happy to report that the mystery, while not always the center of the plot, is interesting and it is solvable. The clues are all there and if the reader pays close attention he/she can solve the mystery before Qwilleran.
On the negative side, there are some questions involving the victim that are never answered. Maybe however, these questions will be answered in a future book because Qwilleran is thinking about doing a biography of the deceased. Given what he has already found out he just might have a best seller on his hands.
bird and cleric watching with Qwill and the kitties.......2004-01-15
Jim Qwilleran, the star of this series, is the heir to the vast Klingenschoen fortune. He lives with his two Siamese cats, Koko and Yum Yum in Moose County, 400 miles north of everywhere.
The action opens with the Qwill and the cats settling in to their latest residence, the newly remodeled apple barn. The peace is shattered as the Theater Club drops by for a house (barn) warming party. When the last of the party goers leave Qwill discovers that one is unable to go on his own power, he has been murdered just outside Qwill's door! The story then focuses on the deceased, Hilary VanBrook, principal of Pickax High School and director of the latest Theater Club production. When a fellow actor disappears he becomes the chief suspect. Qwill, of course, believes that the answer lies elsewhere and, aided by the cats, begins to investigate.
His attention is divided however, his latest lady friend, Polly Duncan, is acting strangely - perhaps he has a rival for her affections. Koko and Yum Yum are similiarly distracted by a new activity - bird watching, especially cardinals. The trio presses on, even traveling out of Moose County looking for answers. In the end the mysteries are solved and life in Moose County continues.
I found this one of the less satisfying books in the series. The action begins nearly a year after the end of the previous book. The character of the second victim, Dennis Hough, who was Iris Cobb's son - introduced in The Cat Who Talked to Ghosts - has changed character slightly, and earned Qwill's trust and respect since we first met him. The motive for his death is weak and there is no real explanation given for the breakup of his family.
Qwill's relationship with Polly is one of the themes of this story and though it is given quite a bit of attention I felt that it was more of a tease. Also, as with the previous novel, I felt that the ending had been rushed with some of the threads left a bit loose.
If you are a devotee of the series you will want to read this one, especially for the Polly and Qwill story. If you are new to series perhaps starting elsewhere would be better, but if you a just looking for a good mystery this may not be your best choice.
One of the lesser books in the series........2003-08-26
In a series that for many years was one of my very favorites this is one title I never cared for. The reason is simple, Quill comes off as such a total jerk. If the main character comes off as unlikeable it's hard to much care about what happens. I will give one example of what I am talking about. In this book there is a sucicide. This man just walks out on his wife and child to live in Pickaxe for no reason what so ever. { All this is set up in The Cat Who.. Talked to Ghosts} When his wife lets him know she will not take him back he kills himself and Quill makes the wife into a heel as if this mans own actions had nothing to do with the situation. It was at that point I stopped reading. For some I am sure this would be perfectly fine but it stuck in my craw. But of the first 14 books in the series this is the only one I would not recomend.

Murder, mayhem, mystery and romance!.......2007-09-10
Ever since I read Karen Rose's latest book "Count to Ten" I have been tracking down at used book stores her previous novels. This one is very exciting. It begin four years ago with a Seattle detective sadly watching a family one of whose members is a serial murderer move away and get away scot-free. The detective is upset as he was blamed for mishandling some DNA evidence which was thrown out by the judge.
Now we come forward in time to the present and Special Agent Steven Thatcher of the North Carolina Stake Bureau of Investigations is at a scene in the woods where a anonymous tip led them to find a young girl's body that had been in the woods awhile. Very gruesome sight. What is weird is the girl was 16, a cheerleader and had beautiful long dark hair. She was found nude and with a shaved head. No clues in the woods at all.
On top of this another girl is reported missing plus Steven has family problems. He is a widower with 3 boys ages 17, 13 and 7. The youngest, Nicky, was kidnapped by a suspect Steven was tracking last spring and while not harmed is still very much emotionally affected by the horrifying experience. This past month his oldest, Brad, has started acting surly, not taking care of himself and doing poorly at school. In fact, Brad's advanced chemistry teacher, Dr. Jenna Marshall, has called and insists that Steven come and meet with her today after school.
Dr. Marshall is a fine and upstanding teacher who upon grading the chemistry tests tells Rudy Lutz he is suspended from playing football. The principal and Rudy's dad try to gang up on her but she stands up to them in spite of their intimidating tactics. As she hurries out of the principal's office on the way to her classroom to meet with Steven Thatcher, he literally crashes into her. Her concern for Brad touches Steven and he is also surprised to feel some sparks as well but his preoccupation with the serial killer as well as concern for his youngest, Nicky, cause him to have many conflicts about his feelings for Jenna.
As the story lines play out with the danger and intrigue increasing and more romantic sparks flying, Ms. Rose is terrific at building the suspense on all accounts.
A terrific read. Highly recommended.
A nice mix of romance and suspense.......2007-06-16
After reading Rose's first book, Don't Tell, I was anxious to read another of her stories. So I picked up Have You Seen Her? from the library and couldn't wait to read it. I ended up enjoying the book just as much as the last one.
One of the things about the story I liked the most was the continuity of characters. I love books that have minor connections to other books by the author. Steven was a character from Rose's first book, Don't Tell, and in this book he is the male lead. It's just nice to have that continuation and to be able to keep up with the characters. I will, however, say that I'm not sure some of the details that Rose presented about Steven in the first book matched up with things in this book. I didn't have Don't Tell anymore to go back and check, but the impression I had of Steven's first marriage didn't match with how things played out in HYSH?. Either I got the wrong impression or Rose decided to alter some details to make HYSH? work better. It's not a huge deal, though. It didn't make the story unrealistic.
Overall, good characters, good plot, good romance. I liked both Steven and Jenna and their romance was sweet. The plot had some nice twists and turns. You have a pretty good idea who the bad guy is - there aren't many possible suspects, but Rose does manage to give you a nice surprise at the end. Enjoyable read all around, and I plan to read more of Rose's books (I have one more I took out from the library).
Have You Seen Her.......2007-05-14
All of her books are great but I think they would be equally great at about 100 to 150 pages less. She should tighten them up a bit. Take note of Nora Roberts or Linda Howards books. Sometimes less is better.
LOVE this book...am rereading for 10th time!!.......2007-01-15
Right now I'm rereading Karen Rose's Have You Seen Her? It's romantic suspense at it's best, with a dark overtone. SBI agent Steven Thatcher (who was introduced in earlier books) is floundering. He has a case that involves young teenage girls that go missing from their beds. And they're turning up dead, and noone seems to know anything. According to the feedback he's getting, these girls would never have willingly left their homes with anyone. He's hitting a wall, and more girls are going missing...His home life is quickly spiralling out of his control, too...his 17 year old son is suddenly flunking classes in school, sullen and sneaky...his youngest son, who was kidnapped in a previous book, still won't sleep in his own bed and is just getting so he'll allow himself to be touched again...and Steven's Aunt is determined to fix him up with a woman. In the midst of all this, Steven meets Jenna Marshall. Dr. Jenna Marshall, actually~~his 17 yr. old son's Chemistry teacher, who is very concerned with Brads decline in grades and attitude. The attraction is mutual, and immediate. But how will Steven find the time for this when his plate is already full? This is an awesome story, and if you're a romance fan, or a fan of suspense, don't miss it!! It's loosely connected to Karen's other books, but every one is stand alone and not to be missed. Her new book, Count To Ten is due out soon, and I can't wait!!
Good, sexy, vulnerable hero. Heroine was likeable also........2007-01-07
Good, exciting book. Great suspense, great sex. I'm pretty picky about writing style, and I like Karen Rose. Intelligent, witty, semi-unpredictable. . . what more can you ask for in a suspense, thriller, chick book? (chick book yes, but my husband liked it, too). After I read this book, which I purchased after I read the other Amazon reviewers' critiques, I went out and bought all of her other books. And I have to say, I'd highly recommend them also. Actually, they were so good that I spent most of my kids' winter break reading them instead of spending quality time with my children. Now I need peruse the Amazon "self-help" book department and find one on how to deal with guilt.
