The original Watership Down is one of those wonderful works that appeals to readers both young and old. The story of a group of rabbits on an adventure into unfamiliar yards, farms, and fields made for an imaginative, captivating journey. This latest work follows the aftermath of the original's climactic ending and includes the rabbits' retelling of various myths associated with their rabbit-hood, plus some new twists and developments. This is a captivating introduction to Adams's warren for first-time visitors, and those who loved the original Watership Down won't be disappointed.
Book Description
Watership Down was one of this century's best-loved works of imaginative literature. Now Richard Adams returns, to tell us what happened to the rabbits after their defeat of General Woundwort.
Tales From Watership Down begins with some of the great folk stories well known to all rabbits. Then we listen in as Dandelion, the rabbits' master storyteller, relates the thrilling adventures experienced by Al-ahrairah, the mythical rabbit hero, and his stalwart, Rabscuttle, during the long journey home after their terrible encounter with the Black Rabbit of Inlé (as narrated in
Watership Down). Finally, in the principal part of the book, we are told eight enchanting stories about the rabbits of the Down-- Hazel, Fiver, Bigwig, and their companions--including the impact on the warren of the obsessive doe Flyairth, and the appointment of Hyzenthlay as a female Chief Rabbit and partner to Hazel.
All readers-- the millions who remember
Watership Down with the deepest affection, and also those for whom this volume will be their first encounter with the rabbits-- will find these nineteen tales utterly compelling, the fruit of Richard Adam's spellbinding narrative power and ability to conjure up a world that is at the same time both real and unreal.

Worst. Sequel. Ever........2007-10-01
Unbelievably tedious PC hackwork -- I had just finished reading the original "Watership Down" out loud to my son when I read this and the contrast was horrifying. "Watership Down" is an all-time classic great novel, but "Tales from Watership Down" has absolutely none of the magic of its predecessor and is proof of a shocking decline in the author's powers (Richard Adams was born in 1920 and wrote "Watership Down" and several other good novels in the 1970's and 1980's, but in this 1996 work he is unrecognizable).
I guess Mr. Adams had a mortgage payment due........2006-07-13
What an awful, shallow, boring money grad. Tales from Watership Down is a pale ghost of the original book. On its own, it is a bad read; next to the original Watership Down, it is a steaming pile of garbage.
Secret Underground River. Are you kidding me?
"I love it more than bunnies!" ; ) .......2005-11-03
I haven't read the first book yet, but since everybody else says this book is worse than the first, gosh, I'm going to love the first book. If there's the one greatest thing in this book I must capitalize upon, it would be Speedwell's Story. If you haven't read the book, and want someone to spoil for you, here are three words: sky-blue horse (Or is that two?) I like the El-Thingummy stories best. You should try this book if you like rabbits. I like rabbits!
Delightful.......2005-06-08
This is a great sequel to Watership Down. In some places its tone is a little darker than the original. The orginal was male dominated. A female chief rabbit and a female oswala are introduced in this book. It is a worthy successor to the original.
Worthwhile Read, but Much Different than Original Novel.......2005-06-05
This book is not very similar to the original novel, which is what I think makes it so interesting and worthwhile to read. I definitely prefer the original, but I believe this work has something important to say. Each of the tales is worthy of the telling and the reading.
I probably will not re-read this as I have the original work, but I don't think I should be comparing this novel to the original one in this review. This is good storytelling in-and-of itself and does not need to be put side-by-side with Watership Down.
The shorter tales are excellent quick reading, and make this an easier book to pick up and put down in our busy lives. Much of what the author is saying in these tales is incredibly fascinating. I was particularly drawn to the paradox that the man-smell, which the rabbits would generally use as a reason to outcast one of their own, is actually what saves the warren. The wisdom of the characters to recognize this is nicely woven into the tale. As with his other works, Richard Adams shows incredible insight into our natural world, especially that of community living animals. It is nice to see humanity in these creatures; or rather, theirs reflected in us. (I am not sure which is more accurate.)
This is a nice collection of touching tales that definitely have something significant to say. As long as readers are not expecting a repeat of the original book, I believe this will be an enjoyable experience. Just don't expect it to read like a sequel.

Product Description
In the mid-1960s, British master storyteller Richard Adams conjured up a magical tale to occupy his children on a long car ride. When he published it as Watership Down, it sold millions of copies. Without missing a beat, he invited both novice and veteran readers on an adventurous and sometimes edifying visit to the Down with Tales from Watership Down, a fascinating book that stands on its own. The first set of stories follows the mythical rabbit hero, El-ahrairah, on his quest for a sense of smell that will protect his species from their enemies. He must traverse the sad world of Yesterday, inhabited solely by animals whove become extinct. Two other sets of lyrical tales follow the rabbit hero and his numerous companions throughout their various adventures and visit them at home in their lively rabbit warren. As charming and whimsical as they are, the tales have an underlying theme as timely now as it was 20 years ago: the worlds wildlife is in dire need of protection.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Yorick and his allies have finally made it to California. Dr. Mann now as access to the information and tools she needs to try and work out exactly why Yorick is alive and all the other males on the planet are dead.
The female of the species also demonstrates that they are equally capable of war and crime when given the opportunity.
If someone said 'ninja monkeynapper' to you generally, you would probably laugh. Here, it is no laughing matter.
Puts the Series Back on Track.......2006-10-13
I missed all the hype about this series, and just happened upon the trade paperbacks at the library. The premise, as the title says, is that some kind of plague spontaneously kills every male on earth at the same instant -- except a 20something slacker named Yorick and his monkey Ampersand. Following the events of the first four books, this fifth picks up the story of Yorick, his government agent bodyguard (Agent 355), and a geneticist (Dr. Mann), who have finally made it to San Francisco, where Dr. Mann has a lab where she hopes to be able to figure out why Yorick survived.
The book opens with Yorick at a church, seeking atonement for having killed a woman in the previous book. There, he meets the cute female caretaker, and after a great deal of talking, finally makes the beast with two backs after two years of celibacy. This arc ends rather oddly with a brief glimpse at Yorick's girlfriend Beth, who's been stuck in the Australian outback for the last two years. Then the story switches over to "Hero's Journey", in which we learn all about Yorick's sister Hero, who was last seen languishing in jail in Ohio, after trying to kill Yorick and his companions. Her backstory is given, which goes a long way toward explaining the ease at which she was brainwashed into the Amazon cult, and why she suffers from hallucinations. From here, events start to get complicated, as a rehabilitated Hero arrives in San Francisco hoping to find her brother, mysterious burqa-wearing agents of the Culper Ring attempt to retrieve an item from Agent 355 (all of which relates back to the first book), Dr. Mann runs test on Yorick, and a ninja (who I believe appeared earlier in the series) kidnaps Ampersand.
This all gets a little bit choppy, but it's a definite improvement from books three and four, both of which got fairly ridiculous and suffered from some distracting guest artist work. There's plenty of action, not too much of the lame attempts at humor that the series is infected by, and we get a little more depth with a few characters. My interest had been faltering, but I'll definitely keep reading after this one -- if only to find out when the Israeli army women are going to show up again.
Best volume of the series thus far.......2006-09-05
Volume 5 compiles eight issues of the comic for a bulky 192 page total. The crux of the story occurs in Califonia almost two full years after the plague. Yorick, Agent 355, Dr. Mann and their monkey Ampersand finally approach Mann's bioengineering laboratory in San Francisco. They finally encounter two separate parties that have each trailed our protagonists westward. The intensifying plot offers further backstory for the main characters and introduces a new menace. Does Dr. Mann discover the cause of the plague? Is Hero pursuing her brother with good or evil intentions? Which secret government organization should be trusted, if any? All eight of these issues featured the original team of artists with no 'guests', another plus. Volume 5 was even better than any of the acclaimed previous volumes.
Gets better and better.......2006-05-29
Brian K. Vaughan's compulsively addicting series from Vertigo still gets better and better with each passing issue. Ring of Truth, the fifth collected volume of the series, begins with Yorick looking for forgiveness, and finding more than he bargained for. After that, Yorick, Agent 355, an Dr. Mann finally reach San Francisco and Dr. Mann's lab, and just in time when Yorick begins exhibiting symptoms of the plague that killed every other male on the planet. Add to this 355's renegade former colleagues on the hunt, as well as Yorick's brainwashed raddled sister Hero, and a sexy ninja who kidnaps Yorick's pet monkey Ampersand, and you have the fastest moving and most gripping storyarc of the series thus far. There is also a major discovery regarding how Yorick and Ampersand survived the plague, and the fate of Yorick's Austrailia-stranded girlfriend Beth is hinted at as well. Pia Guerra's art is what you would expect from the previous installments, and she does a fine job as usual. Once you hit the last page, you'll be salivating for more, and believe it or not, the series just gets better.
This series keeps getting better.......2006-04-05
The largest of all the volumes, this is two stories back to back. And good ones, mind you. We're finally getting some answers about what's been going on that caused the Plague and Yorrick's character takes another turn that will come as a surprise to many people. Yorrick is a bit like Shade the Changing Man in that his character keeps changing. Not so obviously as Shade but subtly. Of course, this is the way good writing is supposed to be.

Customer Reviews:
Read it, it may just change your life........2001-08-22
I read "Rings of Truth", several months ago and found it inspiring. I have used many of the concepts to better my own life. It is a powerful book. I think, for this reason, I would like to respond to the review by Bob Anderson, written April 27th. Where Mr. Anderson saw a self-obsorbed man, I recognized a man willing to re-think and re-evaluate his life and his beliefs. A man who put his livelihood on the line, went in search of the truth and found it. On the inside cover of the book these words are written, "Rings of Truth is a true-to-life story....with enough fantasy to add a sense of mystery and magic.... If Mr. Anderson had read this statement he may have understood the book better. I found the mysticism enhancing as well as a reminder of each concept taught, for who is to say that man does or does not communicate with angels? I believe this book was written so that the single Mom in Pittsburgh can just sit down when time allows and learn the beautiful truths written on its pages because Mr. Britt has done all the research for her. It would be great if this book was free and the seminars were free, as Mr. Anderson expressed. It would be great if we could obtain a college degree for free. It would be great if a person could just receive a heart or lung transplant for free. It would be great if cancer surgery could be free. But these people have chosen a career and they charge for their services just like, I am sure Mr. Anderson charges for his. Rings of Truth is a book you'll want to read more than once, then keep it close at hand for reference.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly ..........2001-04-28
In this story the author goes from being a self-absorbed motivational speaker to a different kind of self-absorbed motivational speaker, because of a series of visits from a spirit guide. He learns 21 life lessons and for each one gets a gold ring. Then he embarks on a career writing books and doing seminars to help others realize these same truths that he has.
The Good
The lessons in here are good ones about letting go of the things that hold us back and learning to embrace life more fully. And the author genuinely seems to want for everyone to improve their lives by coming to understand and apply these principles.
The Bad
It's unclear whether the book is purported to be fiction or not. It wouldn't matter, except that the author is asking us to believe that this information was supernaturally revealed to him and that he has a divine mandate from Michael the Archangel to enlighten the rest of us. If those parts were just to "spice up the story" we need to know that.
The author portrays himself as a soap salesman (Amway?) turned motivational speaker who consorts with angels, spirit guides and Michael the Archangel while living in Sedona and jumping back and forth to Hawaii and Joshua Tree. New age spirituality must be easy under those conditions, but I'm not sure that these techniques would work as well for the single Mom in Pittsburgh who's working two jobs to keep a roof over her kids' heads.
The Ugly
I am suspicious of his motives given that, like so many others who have discovered the truth, he has chosen to make a career of charging other people money (in the form of books and seminars) in exchange for enlightenment. If you're just a motivational speaker, fine. But if you have a quasi-religious/supernatural mandate to spread the truth, then it's a bit unseemly to charge $$ for it - especially if you're already financially independent (which he is, according to his web site).
Great story. Good book. Lacks detail of how to change........1999-07-16
This book is a wonderful story about this man, and the potential of every human being. The 21 concepts provided in this book, illustrate a wonderful comprehensive stragey for Self-realization and growth. However, if you already have extensive or even moderate background in Buddhist philosophy and/or deep into Spirituality read this book as a great book. It lacks the detail of how to change and implement the concepts into your daily life for lasting change. If you are still searching for answers, and trying to see who you are in relation to this universe, GRAB THIS BOOK! Just be ready to also, look further for more details on how to implement the concepts Jim Britt speaks of. All in all though, a wonderful book for this time in human evolution. and everyone could benefit from reading Rings of Truth.
The self development of Letting Go.......1998-12-18
Rings Of Truth is practical magic which teaches the basic concepts of " letting go " of that which no longer serves us in our daily lives. Clinical yet intimate, warm and tender it was very enjoyable reading which on several occasions brought me to tears as I too opened up to the teachings of the golden rings. Am giving several of these books as Christmas presents.Enjoy!!!
"Brilliant" and to the point!.......1998-10-21
Our lives are about compromise! We have been taught the garbage, influenced by control freaks, and think we actually have a handle on our lives. Think again kids! This man is for real and will show you what guts "YOU" really have. This book shows you what you have going for you.. NOT what someone else thinks you should be.

If your faith is wavering, or you're looking for confidence.......2000-08-20
...this is the book for you. A slim volume full of wisdom. The author, in his task of translating the New Testament from Greek to English, experienced many serendipitous moments that pointed him to the truth of the Gospel accounts.
Book Description
J.B. Phillips, best known for his translations of the New Testament, wrote Ring of Truth out of a deep concern for many Christians whose simple faith was being eroded by the widespread dissemination of views of certain modern scholars challenging the accuracy and reliability of the Bible. Phillips' experience in translating the New Testament convinced him that what is written in the Gospels, however much modern scholarship may try to explain it away, has indeed "the ring of truth." In this personal statement of faith he shares the exciting discoveries he made in the course of translation, and his delight in them; he communicates the fruits of his scholarship and his intimate knowledge of the New Testament; but even more he offers his spiritual certainty to those Christians who may be bewildered by destructive tone of much writing about the Bible. The average Christian dismayed by such arguments will be reassured by this testimony of a New Testament scholar who is still convinced of the validity of the Bible and its relevance to contemporary life.
Customer Reviews:
Ring of Truth.......2007-03-16
This is an excellent book because Phillips is a respected translator of the New Testament and because it is well written. Phillips gives his feelings about whether the New Testament is an authentic account and whether Christianity has a solid foundation in this account. He expresses himself with conviction.
Tune Up Your Ears, Listen With Your Heart.......2007-01-15
This is a wonderful little book. Phillips describes how, as a translator, he had to engage deeply and thoughtfully with the original Greek text of the NT. Not only does he find the text to be historically accurate on a wide range of details, he finds that the stories "ring true." Jesus comes across not as a deified philosopher, but as a real, complex, and powerful personality--a human being who was gentle and caring with children and social outcasts, but strong, courageous, and confrontive in challenging the hypocrisy of the highly revered religious powers that be. Phillips specifically lists a number of places where the close attention required by translating brought him face to face with suprising, sometimes shocking, new ideas about Jesus, God, and humanity. This book is well worth every penny you will invest in it, and every moment of time you will spend reading it and thinking about what it says.

SEX, VIOLENCE, EVIL, AND BETRAYAL
The shocking murder case splashed across the Florida headlines has all the right elements for true-crime writer Marie Lightfoot's next bestseller. A charming minister's love affair with a beautiful, wealthy new church member ends in the murder of his wife. The accused now sits on death row, while his lover walks free. Justice appears to have been served, but Marie senses there is more to the story. From the day two little girls found the dead woman in an abandoned mansion to an unexpected visitor's shattering confession, the case's disturbing twists teach Marie a bone-chilling lesson: underestimating the criminal mind can be deadly.
Award-winning author Nancy Pickard has created a wonderfully unique and intriguing character in the "gutsy and charismatic" (The Fresno Bee) Marie Lightfoot, a woman with a shadowy past and a passion for the truth.
Download Description
From the award-winning author of "The Whole Truth" comes a chilling new story featuring her gutsy heroine, Marie Lightfoot. This time Lightfoot can't make the pieces of a Florida murder--involving a priest and his lover--fit together. And the missing piece could be fatal.
Customer Reviews:
Ring of Truth.......2007-03-12
I like some of Nancy Pickard's books better than this, but it was a good read.
Who murdered the art of proofreading?.......2006-11-04
I purchased a paperback edition. This problem may or may not exist in the hardcover version; but it shouldn't have gone undetected anywhere. It's significant for the plot that Marie Lightfoot realizes a character made a slip of the tongue in an earlier conversation. That would, of course, have been a fair-play clue given the reader. But when the reader looks back to check the conversation, it turns out that the character didn't make a slip of the tongue--didn't say the word in question at all!
I really really really enjoyed this book.......2006-10-01
"Ring of Truth" is the first book I have read by Nancy Pickard. Most mystery novels revolve around cops, attorneys, or private investigators. The main character in this book is a true crime author who is researching her latest book "Anything to Be Together". The characters are really well-drawn and had realistic good points and bad points, rather than the same old same old where the hero has to be a jaded yet scruptuously honest, ruggedly handsome police detective or crusading district attorney. The people on one side in this story aren't portrayed as all good and those on the other side all bad, and my idea of which were which changed with every turn of a page. You WILL be surprised! There are a lot of twists and turns and complexities which make this book really fresh, interesting, and enjoyable. I totally disagree with another reviewer who felt that the author used this book as a platform to rail against the death penalty and criticize the police. I am going to read every book in this series right away!
Disappointing.......2005-11-21
It grabbed my attention in the beginning, but quickly became a diatribe about the death penalty and anti-police. The ending was so convoluted to be absolutely unbeliveable. I usually read true crime stories which I find more interesting than fiction. It was so bad, that I could not finish the last chapter. Luckily, I bought this at a thrift store for $1.00. It was so bad - that rather than passing it on to another charity, I discarded it in the trash. What a waste of time. I will never read another Nancy Pickard book.
This Edgar Award nominee does it again!.......2005-09-12
I've regularly read Nancy Pickard's 'Jenny Cain' series and have been heartened by the growth I've seen in her work. Pickard's detective stories have slowly been growing in power and complexity. This novel, however, may mark Pickard's arrival as a true master of the detective story.
I admit that I have not read another of this series, but I was struck by its simple cleverness. The writer of a 'true crime' novel becomes unnerved by doubts concerning the outcome of the trials and criminals that she has recently written about. Her own private investigation, interspersed with chapters from her recently completed 'true crime' book that fill the reader in on the back story, causes a great deal of distress and irritation among both the police and the real criminals.
Very well done. Very clever. I'll be looking for more in the series.

Is not the best book of the saga.......2003-12-01
The book was a little bit disappointing. The author contradicts itself, especially in the last two chapter of the book... Maybe the reason for this was that the ending couldn't be written until the end of the last L5R's convention, where the new emperor was proclaimed.
