4 out of 5 stars No Complaints Here..............2006-05-19

This book was fantastic. It was a post-Civil War novel about a wagon train of individuals on their way to Texas. When I finished the novel I had an urge to start reading it all over again.

The romance aspect of the book took a while to heat up, but the anticipation was exciting, frustrating, and sweet. I wouldn't change a thing about the book, including the controversial rape scene. People need to remember this it is just a story! It's not like women haven't fallen in love with someone who has taken advantage of them before. Give me a break. Besides, the character in question was also a known thief and murderer; I don't hear any complaints about that!

You couldn't help but root for Lydia and Ross, even though Ross wasn't always likeable. Ross's character was flawed, but always desirable and I looked forward to his appearances.

It's one of the better Sandra Brown novels for sure.

1 out of 5 stars When a woman says "NO" she means "NO"!.......2006-01-12

I don't understand how anyone can give this book even one star. Lydia was being raped repeatedly by her step brother and it was a horrible thing but then when her new husband does it, it's okay because they are in love? Who mentioned anything about love? Plain and simple, Ross raped Lydia. It does not matter that it's his wife, she said NO. It's really sad that people think that's considered love. Ms Brown should have approached their scene of passion differently from the first. I do not recommend this book or the sequel, Another Dawn-Very disappointing.

3 out of 5 stars Not Real!.......2005-10-25

I bought this book after I read such great reviews of it but I must tell you I was disappointed. Well ok there was passion and sexual tension and all that a romance novel is required to have but it just do it for me. I had 2 problems with this book
1. I didn't like Lydia much. The way she used to act really like a trash. Baring her breasts in front of strange men and not caring if they saw. well ok it might not have been so bad because she was feeding a baby but after you know what she has been through in her earlier life...wouldn't you think she would be a little too cautious around men... because men are men . Sight of breasts excites them even if it's for feeding a baby. She could just have turned her back to them but no she just opened her night gowns buttons and start feeding the baby. I don't blame Ross for thinking she was trash because she was acting like it.
2. Another thing I couldn't believe the baby. Have you ever come across a baby of 2-3 weeks who needs just three feedings in the whole day and who sleeps through the night? The baby was so considerate that never once did he interrupt his parents when they were having sex or having an argument .I was worried the way they just left him alone at the wagon when were having sex besides the river but when they got back he was still blissfully asleep... I have got a 2 year old baby had gone through whatever having a newborn means too recently. So I just couldn't help feeling odd.

All in all an intense passionate romance but not a realistic one.

Good plot but I learned more about "sex" than I wanted to know. Way too much sex.

This is a "period" piece by Sandra Brown, taking place in the 1870s, charting a wagon train heading for Texas. The two main characters are Ross Coleman, a man who just lost his wife during childbirth, who has a secret from his past, and Lydia, who just gave birth to a stillborn baby, who also has a secret from her past. Lydia is found, barely conscious after giving birth in the woods, by two teens (Luke and Bubba) from the wagon train, who take her back to their Ma to help her get well. When Ross's wife dies during childbirth leaving an infant son behind, it's Lydia who is there to nurse his baby. He's resentful at first, because he thinks Lydia is trash and doesn't want her near his child, but he is also attracted to her wild beauty and he's feeling guilty b/c of his feelings for Lydia so soon after his wife's death. This torment causes him to be unfairly nasty to her, but she's strong-willed and dishes it right back at him, which he finds unnerving. Eventually, they discover that there is something strong b/t the two of them that can't be stopped, and love does conquer all. What I like about this book, besides the love story, is that there are other characters from the wagon train who are interesting to read: Bubba Langston (aka Jake), the sweet, innocent teenager who found Lydia, who idolizes Ross and wants to become the type of man he is; Priscilla, the teen w/ loose morals who seduces Jake; Winston Hill, the southern gentleman who is attracted to Lydia; and Ma, the matriarch of the wagon train. Each lends a dynamic to the book that when woven together make for an excellent read.

Be sure to follow this book up with her sequel, "Another Dawn", which takes place 20 years later and focuses on the story of Jake Langston, and Ross and Lydia's daughter, Banner. But you'll also catch up with Ross and Lydia, Ma, and Priscilla, too. It's a great sequel and a five-year book, but be warned, though, because you may not be satisfied with the ending.

I am a fan of Christine Feehan but had not read anything by Liu. This was a good read to get me excited about reading her work. I am now on my third book by her.

                  4 out of 5 stars The Best Sci-Fi ever.......2007-01-18

Well in a nutshell, if you want sci-fi and ur into vampires, romance and adventure , Christina Feehan is the one to go to .. i picked up one of her books randomely and read it and since then ive been hooked up and made it my aim to get all of her novels and read them..

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not Great.......2007-01-18

First off, a lot of reviews start right off negatively because it was not said that this was a re-issue on Feehan's part of her novella After Twlight, so this is more for those of us who hadn't read After Twlight yet and didn't realize it was a reprint till we came and read the reviews.

I had not read After Twlight as novellas never held much interest for me, I feel alot of them are two short and an unfilling read. I had gone to Feehan's website, really needing a new read from a dependable author and saw Dark Dreamers and hadn't heard of it. I read the introduction/first chapter on her website and I would have to say is some of Feehan's best work. It kept me on the end of the computer seat, glued to the computer screen and then left me hanging so that I was instantly out the door to the bookstore (in a blizzard).

After getting the book and sitting back down to read Falcon and Sara's story, I was kind of let down by the second chapter mellowing out in when the first was full of highstrung excitement, but the book did pick back up. I really enjoyed this story for it being a novella and shorter. Sara at times got on my nerves because she was just so ready to do anything Falcon says while trying to do the "I want an equal partnership" al-mata. Falcon on the other hand was somewhat of a nice change from the usual acts of the other Carpathian men in the series with a different attitude about him.

Falcon finds Sara on his journey home to which he percieves his last journey before he meets the sun to keep from turning vampire, but he is given new hope in finding his lifemate Sara, but learns she has been hunted since 15 by a vampire as old as he is. He sends her to the Carpathian mountains to find Mikhail and the others to help protect her. Orphans that Sara has been trying to adopt are taken and she is in a head-long flight to try and save them and still escape the vampire. The story was well done and was ended nicely, not overly rushed at all.

My one real quip though is not really with the story, but with the headline on Feehan's website, it starts off, "She's known him since she was fifteen. Every night, he is with her: his face, his voice. Tonight, Sara Marten will meet the man who is both angel and demon, salvation and temptation: Falcon--the Carpathian, the banished hero. Tonight, Sara will meet the dark-eyed destroyer destined to be her mate.. " which makes me think that the story line is something along the lines of he found her when she was 15 and had to wait to claim her till she was an adult and has taken care of her till then, something along that line. Well, its not till you get into the 2nd and 3rd chapter that you find thats not the case at all. And how this book started off, it would have made a good story line, but Feehan took it a different direction that still works quite well.

Marjorie M. Lu's story was apparently a continuing in her series of "Dirk & Steele," agents. I haven't read any of the others. This story includes Charlie and Aggie. It had plenty of excitement, but too many spots and comments left me stopping to think, "What? What did she mean by that comment?" So I just skimmed through most of it thinking it was just okay. I think the review before this one is pretty accurate concerning Liu's story."

2 out of 5 stars Perhaps I'm being harsh but..........2007-01-12

This book is split evenly between two stories. The first is a typical Christine Feehan vampire story -- very old, depressed vampire meets the love of his life, a young lady psychic who was traumatized by a vampire murdering her family long ago. Their happiness is threatened by a homicidal maniac vampire. The writing was uninspired and passionless -- formulae, as if Feehan just couldn't work up interest or excitement. Ho, hum.

Liu's tale has more life and excitement to it, but problems of its own. The lady, A, can fortell the future, and uses her skills to find & help arrest villains who kidnap and rape children. The man, C, is imprisoned by an evil witch but able to astral travel. C finds A through astral travel and gets her help to rescue a young girl. As you can tell, this is an icky and depressing topic that is entirely non-condusive toward romance.

A accuses everyone of being racist and occasionally makes racist comments. I always find this offensive, but some people who have struggled with discrimination might sympathise. A is also a whiner who blames all of her problems on other people, and refuses to take any responsibility. Grr! I prefer leading ladies with an optimistic outlook on life.

Other than this, Liu's writing is exciting and the setting interesting -- a noticable improvement over her first novel -- but the plot is a downer and not condusive toward romance. Still, you might really enjoy this story.

                  Book Description

Best selling horror author Rowe Devlin has had two flops in a row and keeps falling in love with straight women. Seeking inspiration and a fresh start, she abandons life in Manhattan for an old Victorian house in Maine. But Dark Harbor Cottage is a far cry from the tranquil writing environment she envisioned. For a start, the place is haunted, and the ghost is none too friendly. To make life even more difficult, her neighbors are a huge distraction. The Temple twins, Phoebe and Cara, are identical and profoundly alluring, and Rowe is soon under their spell, unable to decide which of the two she is more in love with. Just when it seems things can't get any worse, she finds herself embroiled in a mystery more bizarre and frightening than anything she's ever written.

Intrigue, passion and suspense combine in this taut paranormal thriller/romance, the first in Jennifer Fulton's new Heartstoppers series.

4 out of 5 stars A very good modern gothic (lesbian) story.......2007-07-03

I noticed that many have already covered the synopsis of the story, so I won't go into it. Instead what I will express is my honest thoughts about Dark Dreamer.

First let me say that I loved this book! When I began to read it I
couldn't help but be reminded of the numerous Stephen King novels
that I've read. Jennifer Fulton not only manages to encompass the
formula of Horror in this novel, but she clearly has a handle on the
literary style of Gothic Literature. What surprised me the most is
that this novel is listed as Romance when, in my opinion, it should
be listed as horror as it has far more horror/terror aspects. I would
even say that it should be listed as a Modern Gothic tale, in that it
centers around the traditional theme of a Haunted House rather than
                  pure romance.

Now here is where I'm probably going to get many readers upset. Yes,
there were the various love interest within the novel, and even the
obligatory sex scenes, but I believe that these scenes detracted from
the overall ghost and haunted house storyline. In my opinion, the
sex scenes were unnecessary and could have been lessoned or even
completely omitted without detracting from the plot. But for those
of you who won't read a book without the sex scene, I'm sure the
sections in this book were enough to keep everyone, excuse the
pun, "sated." ;-) But for myself, I did skip over these scenes
because the actual story was far too exciting and I was in a hurry to
see what was going to happen on the next page with the ghost and the
rest of the intrigue, rather than be bothered with all the extra sex
                  scenes.

Over all it was an excellent read and from time to time it did have
me gripped in Horror. Fulton even wrote a bit of comedy into certain
sections when the fear grew too great, and this offered a well
deserved chuckle. It was like the type of laugh that you share with
friends when you've been caught being frightening out of our wits on
a haunted house ride, lol. I'd highly recommend it, especially to
fans of Horror, Gothic (Stephen King style) novels.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of potential, but doesn't come close to fulfilling it.......2006-11-23

Dark Dreamers by Jennifer Fulton is a thriller-romance about a best-selling horror author, Rowe Devlin, who moves into an old house in Maine in an attempt to cure her writer's block and seek refuge from the manipulative women she keeps falling in love with. But things don't go as planned when she finds out that her new house is haunted, and the gorgeous twins living next door, Carla and Phoebe, both develop crushes on her. Now Rowe must set aside her writing for the time being and work on solving the deadly mystery of her new house before its too late, as well as figuring out the equally perplexing mystery of which twin she's more in love with.

A horror writer just happens to move into a haunted house? What are the odds? And the residence next door just happens to house a pair of hot lesbian twins who both throw themselves at Rowe, also a lesbian? What are the odds? That might as well be this book's catch phrase, considering its plot is almost entirely driven by coincidences and clichés. "This is too bizarre", remarks one character after a particularly unbelievable coincidence, but that is a drastic understatement. That part was so cringe-worthy that I might have actually stopped reading the book permanently if there weren't only a couple more chapters to go. I guess someone could argue that all stories involving a mystery are contingent to some degree on chance, but that does not account for the stereotypes. The characters are so shallow that it was very hard for me to emphasize with any of them, and easy to predict what they would do next. Additionally, the conversations between them often come across as awkward and unnatural. Even though I think Fulton might have been trying to make some kind of profound statement on love vs. lust, it gets lost among the overblown subplot involving one character's involvement with and eventual kidnapping by a certain government organization. Not that I should be criticizing that subplot too strongly, as it was the only one with any originality, and it was certainly the most entertaining. I'm just not entirely sure how it ties in effectively with everything else.

If the whole book was about Phoebe's struggle to cope with the blessings and curses of her psychic abilities, and it focused more on the strains in her relationship with her sister than on her materialized-out-of-thin-air love affair with Rowe, I feel like Fulton might have really had something here. That makes it disappointing for me to say that I simply cannot recommend Dark Dreamers to anyone. Whether you are looking for a thriller, a romance, or a combination of both, I'm sure you can do much better.

5 out of 5 stars Far from Moon Island.......2006-08-01

Fulton shows us the depth of her writing. Come to the dark side with Devlin a horror novel author living next door to a set of twins. One of them being telepathic.

Will Devlin with the help of the twins roll off a winning novel?

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read from beginning to end.......2006-07-27

I thoroughly enjoyed the character development of this novel. A number of readers often express concern when an author separates women into sterotypes. In theory, I have the same problem, so it surprised me when I knew the sterotypes were there and they didn't bother me.

Phoebe is so delicate on so many levels, from beginning to end, but the author doesn't try to hide that fact, or force the character out of her comfort zone. Instead, she allows us to witness Phoebe's personal growth as multiple mysteries develop and unfold. The result is a very believeable character, one who has a gift and is in a position to help so many people, drawing strength not from her own ego, but from those who love her.

Conversely, Cara initially appears to be the more attractive target as she is the one who kepts everything under control. But we eventually see that, despite her mental strength, Cara is not immune to her own set of vulnerabilities.

In the end -- and I must commend the author for her choices in when and how to bring this all to a close -- the reader is left with feelings of warmth and compassion that are not easily forgotten.

                  4 out of 5 stars Dream of a Book.......2006-07-25

Jennifer Fulton has written a tantalizing gothic mystery that keeps the pages turning with inspired plot twists and highly sympathetic characters. Her tale of down-on-her-luck horror writer Rowe Devlin's escape from Manhattan to Maine (where she inhabits the haunting and haunted) Dark Harbor Cottage is the kind of personal journey that I love to be taken on by an accomplished author. When you throw in Dark Harbor Cottage's secret, a hot lesbian romance with one (or both?) of the twins next door (one of whom is psychic and who becomes mixed up with the government in a huge way), you have a rollicking good read.

I don't often see pictures or read interviews from a number of artists and authors I'm familiar with, so a book like this that can package photographs and often words from the author/artist themselves on the genre of horror and their hand in it sounded like a good idea to me, and indeed so it turned out to be. I enjoyed it. Just some random thoughts on the individual sections:

Ackerman - He looks like an old-time fop in this picture. Amusing.

Atkins - I liked his comments.

Barker - Nice photo - I was struck by his pensive and hard to pigeonhole expression.

Bradbury - Looking every bit the icon he is.

Cave - Looks the part of "the elderly man of letters."

                      Clegg - Somewhat creepy looking.

Daniels - Looks like a used car salesman.

Eggleton - He looks like what many people imagine a horror artist would look like. He has that "gothic badass" look in his photo.

Ellison - One of my favorite authors in the group, I was amused to see him looking like a rakish, sketchy salesman of some sort in his picture.

Faust - A theatrical pose from an attractive woman and talented author.

Fletcher - For some reason, this picture brings to mind a fading, aging Hollywood actress from years past.

Gaiman - Another one of my favorite authors, this picture looks like they self-consciously attempted to make him look "cool." Well, it worked.

Giger - I hadn't seen many pictures of Giger, and this one makes him look truly imposing, with a stony visage like some terrible Greek god.

Golden - His words resonate here.

Hamilton - Never saw a picture of her before, she's an attractive woman, and sort of gothy-looking as well.

Herbert - I've read a number of his books, but somehow didn't remember seeing him on a jacket cover. My first thought was "Wow, he looks sort of like Roger Daltrey." *Very* British looking.

Hodge - A talented writer who looks like a bit of dandy in this picture. Another picture with somewhat of a theatrical feel. His written section was amusing, if not a little alarming.

Koontz - His written section was very uplifting, if it's true.

Laymon - I like a number of his books; in this picture he comes off looking quite creepy. Probably intended, knowing his works.

Lee - A funny picture. I've read some of his books, but I'd never seen a picture. He's unshaven, wearing slob clothes, a Black Flag shirt, and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. He looks like what some people might think a stereotypical horror convention fan or aging punk rocker might look like. Good stuff.

Lumley - Ha! Great picture. I'd never seen Brian Lumley before, though I've enjoyed his books. He looks for all the world like an old British politician.

Newman - Self-consciously crazy looking picture - he looks like his job and a guy who writes the books he does. Not totally unlike Weird Al Yankovic back in the day either.

                      Taylor - Cute and elegant.

Tem - Steve Tem's written piece is interesting.

Tessier - He looks like like one of those American authors you see in pictures from Paris in the 1920s in this picture; of course this seems to be intentional.

Wagner - Great picture. This picture makes Karl Edward Wagner look like a rip-roaring wild guy who lived life to the fullest. He died too young though, so I suppose you could also read it as a cautionary photo.

Yarbro - I'd read a few of her books, never saw a picture, but she looks like my high school history teacher.

Those are some of my thoughts as I flip through the book. If anything interested you, pick it up and give it a chance for yourself.

                      1 out of 5 stars Poor Photography.......2001-10-20

I certainly would have appreciated a portrait book of my favorite authors but this isn't it. Beahm's C.V. is as biographer of Michael Jordan. His "dues" consist in bleeding the genuine affection readers have for an author through amaturish, hackneyed Star Wars/Star Trek type marketing.

5 out of 5 stars Picture Perfect: Beth Gwinn's Work.......2001-10-05

Photography is a difficult craft to master. I've photo-illustrated my own books for years, studied photography on my own, and have accidentally taken a few good portraits, but I've never been able to take the time away from writing to spend in my own darkroom or in Photoshop (for digital photography) to bring my craft where I'd like it to be.

The curious reader may certainly find examples of my work in any of my published books, but the real point of this piece is not to talk about my work but to talk about Beth Gwinn's work.

Beth Gwinn has obviously put in a lot of time behind the camera to master the elusive art of photography, because this collection of photos is the work of a solid professional.

I wish Amazon.com had run a few of them to show the quality of the work, because these are portraits that do exactly what a photograph SHOULD do: Show us the subject in a new light.

I could point to page after page of personal favorites -- the shot of Clive Barker, positioned in front of one of his paintings captures him perfectly; and Christa Faust, the dark lady of the field, looks absolutely smashing in black.

But suffice to say that if you have any interest whatsoever in seeing a portrait of your favorite writer that goes beyond the sterile "deer in headlights" publicity shot most publishers use for dust jacket photo mterial, you'll find much to like in Beth Gwinn's work.

Stanley Wiater should need no introduction, if you know anything about this field. He's paid his dues and chronicled the field for years. He was obviously the set-up man for the photo shoots and arranged dozens of dark dreamers to sit (or stand) for these shots.

I also like the write-ups provided by the writers. They vary in length, but all provide a glimpse (or more) about the writer in question. A nice touch.

The publisher of this book, Cemetery Dance, probably does require an introduction to the Amazon.com community at large. Suffice it to say that Rich Chizmar knows how to put together a book: The book is oversized and beautifully bound in black cloth with silver stamping, the dust jacket is simple and elegant in its design, the binding is sturdy, and the paper stock is glossy, which enhances the reproduction.

If the market for this kind of book was bigger, Rich, I'm sure, would have sprung for some more shekels to print the photos using a duotone (or tri-tone) process, which involves running the pages through the press again to achieve a deeper, richer black, but let's face it, there's enough people to support such first class treatment for ANSEL ADAMS AT 100, but genre books like this are lucky to see the light of day, and for that we should thank Gwinn, Wiater and the publisher, Cemetery Dance.

I have in my book collection several similarly themed books. SOUTHERN WRITERS, THE WRITERS DESK, THE FACES OF FANTASY (Patti Perret), and dozens of photo books by the Big Name Photographers. Obviously, readers want to see the faces behind the words, and books like this that require a lot of traveling and coordination to put together are visual treasures -- real keepers.

Bottom line, then: Buy this book and leaf through the pages and marvel at the portraits, and thank your lucky stars that there are small presses out there that devote their limited resources to books of this nature.

1 out of 5 stars Cold and Unappealing.......2001-09-15

It's hard to guess who the audience of this book could be. Lumping divergent authors between the same "horror genre" covers assumes a depressing blandness in taste, until you find where most of these pictures first appeared, in gossipy fanzines like Locus. Only such an audience would know Ellen Datlow for example as anything other then a competent editor, or want her picture. Gwinn is no Jill Krementz whose photography she is obviously mimicking, the only author both photographers have taken is Stephen King whose warmth Krementz captures eloquently in The Writers Desk, by contrast Gwinn's is oddly cold. This is not a good book, avoid it.

At 500 pages one might hold off picking up this book or CD but once the fear is overcome you will enjoy the events leading up to the War of 1812 more than you could have believed.
The character stories are well developed. The historical setting is obviously well researched. If you care about this country and truly want to learn from both our mistakes and successes you will find current affairs and history seem to be layovers of each other.
L.C. Lewis has a wonderful way with a phases and the detail of her characters lives, thoughts, dress and conversations.
