In 1764, two Englishwomen set out to prove that swallows--contrary to the great Linnaeus's belief--do not hibernate underwater. But they must be patient and experiment in secret, such actions being inappropriate for the female of the species. In 1862, a hopeless naturalist heads off for yet another journey, though he can't seem to rid his conscience of the thousands of animals that have already died in his service. In 1971, a pregnant young woman, ill at ease with her socially superior husband and his stepchildren, hears of a Tierra del Fuegan taken hostage by the commander of the Beagle in 1835. This unwilling specimen was, we read, "captured, exiled, re-educated; then returned, abused by his family, finally re-accepted. Was he happy? Or was he saying that as a way to spite his captors? Darwin never knew."
Many of the characters who populate Andrea Barrett's National Book Award-winning collection, Ship Fever, feel similarly displaced in the world. They long to prove themselves in both science and love, but are often thwarted by gender, social position, or the prevailing order. In "The Behavior of the Hawkweeds," the wife of a genetics professor has learned that each narrative of discovery is matched by one, if not more, "in which science is not just unappreciated, but bent by loneliness and longing." Barrett's astonishing tales of ambition and isolation convey the meaning and feeling behind the patterns--scientific and emotional--but slip free of easy closure. The two women in "Rare Bird," like the swallows, depart England for more conducive climes, or so the brother of one believes. The reader is left to hope, and imagine. Much has been made of Andrea Barrett's interlacing of history, knowledge, and fact--and rightly so. But equal attention should be paid to the brilliant serenity and exactitude of her style. --Kerry Fried
Book Description
1996 National Book Award Winner for Fiction. The elegant short fictions gathered hereabout the love of science and the science of love are often set against the backdrop of the nineteenth century. Interweaving historical and fictional characters, they encompass both past and present as they negotiate the complex territory of ambition, failure, achievement, and shattered dreams. In "Ship Fever," the title novella, a young Canadian doctor finds himself at the center of one of history's most tragic epidemics. In "The English Pupil," Linnaeus, in old age, watches as the world he organized within his head slowly drifts beyond his reach. And in "The Littoral Zone," two marine biologists wonder whether their life-altering affair finally was worth it. In the tradition of Alice Munro and William Trevor, these exquisitely rendered fictions encompass whole lives in a brief space. As they move between interior and exterior journeys, "science is transformed from hard and known fact into malleable, strange and thrilling fictional material" (Boston Globe).

Good reading, for good nights.......2007-03-15
I recently picked up this book on the suggestion of a book-of-the-day calendar. When I went to pick it up at the library, I couldn't even remember why I thought it was so particularly intriguing. Short stories about science? Who wants to read about string theory and relativity? But being a shallow bibliophile, I found I liked the Audoboneque cover and brought it home. Several nights later, I pulled it out of my stack of bedside books (not to be confused with the sofa-side books, the bathroom books, the kichen books, the office books, or the car books) and found that I have never come across a more intelligent set of short stories in my life. I can say that the writing in this book is so good, it is nothing short of a small miracle.
In the first story a woman recounts her life with her gardener immigrant grandfather, who was a friend of Mendel's, telling how he died and the legacy of his friendship. In another, two competing 18th century naturalists try to survive the wilderness. Linneaus, in his decline, sees the ghosts of his assistants, who died young in the name of science. These are easily some of the best short stories I have ever read--and I'm including Englander's Unbearable Urges and just about everything I ever read in school, including Hardy.
So don't let the science theme put you off--it's a brilliantly done theme. Take this one with on a car trip to enhance your travels through nature, or put it on your bedside table for a nice read before bedtime. Either way, you'll enjoy them more than you thought. As for myself, I feel that Barrett is one of the single best writers alive--she has the simplicity of Pearl S. Buck, and the imaginative intelligence (there's that word again) of any of the world's best writers. Enjoy.
Alice Munro-like biology, zoology and virology-themed stories.......2006-12-29
The (almost 100-page long) title-story, which makes up one-third of the book, follows Dr. Lauchlin Grant as he leaves home, near that of a beloved married childhood friend, and travels to Grosse Isle to help with ship-fever-afflicted patients living there under quarantine. It is set in 1847, when thousands of impoverished Irish emigrants left their famine ravished country and traveled in crowded ships, often plagued with typhus, to immigrate to Canada. The other seven stories, of a more conventional length, have in common, biology, zoology and/or biochemistry. The Behavior of the Hawkweeds is peripherally about Mendel's peas; The English Pupil, an elderly, former zoology professor with memory problems, and Rare Bird (my favorite), the life of a science-minded woman stuck in a Jane Austen-like world-both are set in the 1700s and are marginally related; The Marburg sisters looks at twin biochemistry-majors; and Birds with No Feet follows a regrettably unsuccessful Darwin-like zoologist. I didn't care for either of the two set in more recent times: The Littoral Zone, an affair, and Soroche, a widow's handling of her husband's estate and thoughts about a long past encounter. Fans of the sciences will probably enjoy this collection of stories more than the average reader. Alice Munro consistently produces stories of similar caliber, although without the biology/zoology/virology connection. Fans of the story Ship Fever may especially like Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks, Mountains Upon Mountains by Tracy Kidder, and possibly Typhoid Mary by Judith Walzer Leavitt. Others may like The Double Helix by James D. Watson and possibly Life of Pi by Yann Martel.
Unique, engaging.......2006-09-28
Ship Fever and Other Stories is, for writers, a blueprint on how to approach a theme in short fiction, and then to exploit nearly every angle that this theme can offer. That is the unique genius of this collection: each story is similar, but exploits that similarity in a different way. As one reads this collection, the depth of the theme is more enriched. Science, or more precisely, practical science and those who engage in it, becomes a backdrop for an overall exploration of what it means to be fully human.
The Science of the Human Heart.......2006-08-23
History, science, the history of science, and the science of history - Andrea Barrett's prose gracefully ranges through all these subjects, as well as across continents, eras, and the human heart. She takes the dry minutiae of science and shows us hidden marvels.
Fantastic Fiction - Blending Science & History.......2005-04-20
The title story in the this collection, "Ship Fever," is one of my all time favorites. Barrett is so deft at transporting the reader to the past, you don't even realize the "historical" nature of the story until you are at the last page, tearful and breathless. Also highly recommended: Andrea Barrett's collection SERVANTS OF THE MAP, as well as the novel EASTER ISLAND by Jennifer Vanderbes.

Book Description
Tales of tall ships in exotic seas and of Arthurian England compete for attention with rural English ballads and mythological narratives in this collection of poetry from one of England's great storytellers. Some of John Masefield’s best known poems are included, such as "Sea-Fever," and "Cargoes," along with previously uncollected rarities. Many of the poems reveal Masefield's fascination with the lives of seafarers and lowly farm workers and contribute to a charming and quixotic image of English history.

Really disapointed.......2007-02-23
Like others I bought the book on the strength of the recommenders.
I assumed it would be action packed but with a degree of mystery. That it would surprise me with unexpected but plausable turns in the road. It might even make me laugh in the process.
It did none of those things. It is predictable, slow and just boring.
The whole first 2 parts I am wondering when will the story start?
The characters were so confusing. In many places I had no clue who was speaking and saying what. I still have never figured out the thing Fontana had on Manny and Kip. I think. Never made sense.
A lot of the terminology is not really explained. You egt the impression the writer doesnt really knwo much about cruise ships, but pretended to be detailed. The details were not very descriptive.
The ending is horrible. Huge holes. A person will have a huge home on the water, and no alarm? Fontana meeting up with them again, is so nuts. The entire relationship between Matt and Julia was just perverted and stupid. She knew those things, and still did what she did?? yuck!
I was so upset when i closed this book. i wanted my money back.
Not much Fever.......2006-11-21
I have to agree with the people who didn't like this book. The glowing reviews of it must be coming from people working for the publisher or friends of the author. There were some interesting parts and it had great story potential, but there were holes in the plot the size of a cruise ship! A couple of small irritating things like attributing a line of dialogue to the wrong character during the main heist you could probably overlook, but the last two chapters of this book are just plain intolerable. These people are wanted and they are driving around a small town in the car the cops are looking for! With a trailer on the back! The ending itself is just lazy and bizarre. This guy knows he's being followed, has two guns available and doesn't even think to maybe try and kill them first??? And I'm still not even sure HOW it ended. I guess it was supposed to be some sort of twist, but why? She could have taken everything and left when she went the first time. Why even come back? I liked the short story about the cannibals more than the rest of the book. It was at least interesting and somewhat amusing even for a tale about cannibals. I do hate the ending was so bad though. I could have tossed it in my pile of paperbacks to sell at the yard sale if the main character had half the smarts at the end that he had in the other twenty-some chapters. But I'm afraid this one goes in the dumpster.
Mediocre, at best.......2006-02-26
I got this book based on all the glittering stars and glowing reviews on this site. After having tortured myself by sticking with it to the inept end, I can only conclude that there must have been a tear in the fabric of the universe letting through the readers of Bizzaro world to write them, because this book stank. The premise sounded intriguing, but the actual plot, and I use the term very loosely here, was dull, had poor focus and little substance. The ending read like the author suddenly tired of writing the book and just abruptly finished it off. Instead of a mastermind, Mission impossible like plan that would actually be needed to take a major cruise liner, especially after the Achille Lauro, this book describes essentially a walk onto the ship that you'd have to be brain dead to believe. Fast paced? Unh,unh. Thriller? I don't think so. Put this on your 'avoid' list.
Engaging heist novel.......2006-02-17
"Fever," the debut of author Sean Rowe, is an engaging heist novel in the tradition of Elmore Leonard and the film "Ocean's 11." It's a fast, fun and funny romp through South Florida that makes for an ideal late-summer book.
Its lead character is a former FBI agent working as head of security for the world's largest cruise line. When his stepbrother arrives on the scene and blackmails him into helping out with a plot to hijack a cruise ship (which is conveniently carrying a fortune in drug money), his already disappointing life takes a turn for the worse.
"Fever" has plenty of action and a nicely twisted plot. What really distinguishes it, though, is the author's way with characters and his ability to make these flawed people both human and sympathetic. That is the sign of a gifted writer.
PLEEE.......2006-01-17
Do we REALLY need another x-law man who's a drunk??? Oy - I couldn't finish this mess - pleeze someone stop Rowe before he writes again! I read an entire chaper that I still THINK was a dream sequence but am not sure - it wasn't clear! I got about 30 pages in and this one went against the wall - hard.

A Comparative Analysis of Ship Self Air Defense (SSAD) Systems Using a Modkit Simulation
Manufacturer: Storming Media
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Spiral-bound
ASIN: 1423545486 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A479163. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Rapid changes and developments in defense technology have created a difficult analytical environment for decision authorities when selecting the best weapon system for their armed forces. Appropriate operations analysis techniques and tools can provide some insight needed for the selection process. The objective of this thesis is to identify and develop suitable Operations Research analytical techniques and tools to aid decision authorities in the Ship Self Air Defense (SSAD) system selection process. The thesis first develops a SSAD system simulation Model (SSAD-Sim) using discrete event simulation techniques and implements it in the Java programming language and Modkit. The simulation is then used to identify appropriate exploratory analysis capabilities including measures of effectiveness evaluation and parameter sensitivity analysis. Exploratory analysis techniques are used to evaluate two different SSAD systems and firing policies. Key parameters analyzed for sensitivity include numbers of trackers, SAM inventory levels and tracker slew delay. As a result of the success of the SSAD simulation, further component additions and modifications are recommended for further study and development.

Book Description
In this modern-day fairy tale, New York Times bestselling author Kristin Hannah gives us a very special gift: the heartwarming story of a woman at a crossroads, caught between two lives, who finds a second chance at happiness.
Joy Candellaro used to love Christmas more than any other time of the year. Now, as the holiday approaches, she finds herself at loose ends. Recently divorced and estranged from her sister, she can’t summon the old enthusiasm for celebrating. So without telling anyone, she buys a ticket and boards a plane bound for the rural Northwest.
Yet Joy’s best-laid plans go terribly awry. The plane crashes deep in the darkness of a forest. Miraculously, Joy and her fellow passengers walk away from the wreckage as the plane explodes. There, amid the towering trees, Joy makes a bold and desperate decision to leave her ordinary life behind and embark on an adventure . . . just for the holidays.
Daniel O’Shea has returned to the small town of Rain Valley, following the death of his ex-wife. Now he is a single father facing his son’s first Christmas without a mother. Six-year-old Bobby isn’t making it easy–the boy has closed himself off from the world, surrounding himself with imaginary friends.
When Joy and Bobby meet, they form an instant bond. Thrown together by fate, these wounded souls will be touched by the true spirit of Christmas and remember what it means to be a family.
Then a dramatic turn of events shows Joy the price of starting over. On a magical Christmas Eve she will come face-to-face with a startling truth. Now she must decide: In a time of impossible dreams and unexpected chances, can she find the faith to reach for the love she has found . . . and the new life only she believes in?
Customer Reviews:
Simple, basic, unchallenging -- if that's what you want..........2007-03-19
I am all for suspending my disbelief, but this book felt like a marginal effort by a marginal author to reach a mass audience looking for a warm, fuzzy, quick read about Christmas and love. Prose was overly basic, characters were underdeveloped. Best thing I can say about this book is that it was short.
An Unexpected Adventure Where Life Takes a Turn.......2007-02-19
Joy Candellaro a school librarian, is not very happy this Christmas season, that's for sure. In years past, Christmas has always been a wonderful celebration. But this year, Joy's life took a turn for the worse possible scenario when she catches her sister Stacey in bed with her husband Thom. A bitter divorce takes place after, and Joy has not been able to look Stacey in the eye since. And to make matters much worse, Stacey is pregnant.
When Joy comes home from work and finds her sister there wanting to talk it out, she can't bear it. She just needs to run away from it all-and she does. She turns around and goes to the airport, and on an act of spontaneity, buys a ticket bound for the rural northeast. Than the completely unexpected really happens. The plane crashes and explodes within a short period of time. Joy is unconscious for minutes, yet wakes up suddenly, walking away from the scene there. She ventures up the road to a fishing lodge owned by a father and son.
When she walks up to it, it appears to be closed down. But she knocks on th door anyway, and a boy, Bobby lets her in. He says they are no longer open really, but finds her a room anyway. She and Bobby become fast friends-and yet Bobby has a real chip on his shoulder as does his father Daniel who is not pleased that Joy is there. Reluctantly, he lets her stay there for the week, and while there Joy and Bobby bond. Bobby has lost his mother in a car accident, and is still grieving terribly. He is not happy with his dad, as he took off when Bobby was very little, and left he and his mother alone. And now all of a sudden, Daniel has to step in and be a parent to his son.
The story takes a twist when Joy knows she has to get back home to her "real life," even though she hates to leave Bobby, and actually Daniel too. He comes to like Joy in a kind of romantic way.
When it is time to go to Christmas Eve service, it is Joy's last day there before going home. It is after the service, that Joy has an attack of some sort, and passes out unconscious. The story then takes another turn from that point-and I won't tell as I don't want to give it away.
I highly recommend this book, even though the ending could have been better. The author could have written the ending differently than she did for the book to make more sense there-but the rest of it was really good and hard to lay down.
This is such a cute story.......2006-12-29
I sure am glad I bought this book at the grocery store a few weeks ago. The cover is so cute with this little flower wreath that I couldn't resist. An then I started reading right before Christmas and the character's trajectory completely helped me enjoy the spirit of the season.
So Predictable and Sappy.......2006-11-30
This book is my first introduction to Ms. Hannah's writing and I'm very disappointed. The writing is hokey, sickeningly sweet and syrupy. The "twist" was minor and didn't really impress me. I bought this as a travel read for the plane and couldn't wait to get back to my home airport to get my Read and Return 50% refund. If you're looking for mind candy that doesn't require a lot of participation on the part of the reader, Comfort and Joy is your best bet.
Don't Think, Just Read.......2006-11-24
I just finished reading this book, didnt take me that long. I found the story fasinating and really captured my attention and made me want to continue reading on. When I got to the second part where she finds out the truth, I went back to reread most of the conversation parts and its like all of a sudden I'm like Joy, putting the pieces together.
I guess to read this book, its pretty much just an enjoyment. I mean for me, the ending was pretty much how I imagined it to be so if you do too much thinking into the logic and reality, it pretty much spoils it. So Im trying not to overthink the whole possibilities of what mightve happened there.

Beautifully written.......2007-10-01
This book takes you on a journey to the very center of your soul. The center where when you think all hope is gone and there is no chance at happiness, the light at the end of the tunnel shines through for you. The book made me cry several times. I could not put it down. This is the first novel from Kristen Hannah that I read but it certainly will not be the last. This novel is beautifully written!
Tries Hard.......2007-04-13
Heartbroken after her husband falls in love with her sister, who is now pregnant with his child, Joy Candellaro impulsively decides to leave town right before Christmas and hops on a plane to Canada to get away. But her plane crashes and Joy wanders away only to end up at a fishing lodge owned by Daniel O'Shea, who has a young son, Bobby. Joy immediately bonds with Bobby who is still dealing with his mother's tragic death. She doesn't bond as easily with Daniel who has problems of his own - he was divorced from Bobby's mother and is struggling to establish a relationship with his young son. But just when Joy thinks she might be falling in love with Daniel, she is pulled away from them and has to fight her way back. While trying to do so, she begins to realize that things aren't what they seem and she begins to question what is and what isn't real. But in her heart, she knows she needs to find Daniel and Bobby before she'll be whole again.
"Comfort and Joy" is a unique type or romance and while it doesn't quite work in the end, Kristen Hannah deserves a lot of credit for attempting it. Joy is a believable heroine, devastated and needing to get away after the betrayal of her husband and sister. Bobby is very cute and very real, prone to having imaginary friends and seeing his dead mother, he very much needs loving parents. Unfortunately, not only because the book is from Joy's viewpoint but because of the whole premise of the book, Daniel is never a fully developed character and the romance between him and Joy never really worked for me. The book is divided into two parts and the second section goes in a totally different, Sixth Sense type of direction that may take readers off guard. It wasn't until I reread certain parts of the book that I realized how cleverly Hannah devised certain plot lines (like the way Joy was able to play games with Bobby and Daniel and a phone call she made) and how she placed little hints as to what was going on. Again, it ultimately didn't work, but it was a good attempt and well done.
Unpredictable and odd.......2007-01-28
Not only did this book confuse me but it made me feel uncomfortable. It started out normal and quickly crashed into a tail spin of a chaotic plot with no hope of a happy ending. This poor woman Joy Callandro...the things she goes through...You don't know whether to feel sorry for her or to just detach from the story. it's very odd ending left me feeling like i drank something that i read the name of and thought, wow this should be delicious and then once i drank it and finished it, i realized how gross it was. that's how it made me feel...
so if you like that feeling...
this is your book
