2 out of 5 stars Totally icky "romance".......2006-11-15

While returning from a friend's shower, a very pregnant, very widowed, and very alone Leah goes into labor on a deserted highway. Rugged fellow widower and stranger Chad Dillon arrives on the scene and helps her through the tough labor and soon finds himself attracted to the new mother. Leah is not sure she wants to give herself to another man after losing her husband in the line of duty, especially one as secretive as Chad. But he relentlessly pursues her until she gives in to his desires. Please. Call me a cynic, but I wouldn't want some strange man going ga ga over me as I'm giving birth on the side of the road. Talk about a huge "ick factor!"

Being an early Brown novel, there are communication issues which keep the protagonists apart instead of real relationship issues. One thing is for certain, this book should never have been re-released. Poor writing, poor plotting, poor dialogue. You name it. This story has it (or doesn't as the case may be). The story is eerily similar to Linda Howard's horrid "Bluebird Winter," another must miss melodrama from the 80's. Save your money and get this tripe from the library.

1 out of 5 stars Insomnia? Try the audio version of this book by an otherwise must-buy author.......2005-11-12

When a book this bad bears Sandra Brown's name, my first thought is, "Wow. Talk about multi-tasking! Writing a novel while having a phone conversation and working a crossword puzzle must have been hard."
My second thought is "Naptime!"

The opening chapter shows promise: a young widow goes into labor on an abandoned desert highwsay and is rescued by a handsome stranger.

The fact that he has a tough time repressing thoughts of sexual desire for a woman who's in labor is a teensy bit wierd, but maybe that's just me.

More intriguing is the question of why Leigh is driving alone, in this isolated environment, so near her due date, in the era before cell phones. What is she running from? What dark secret will her rescuer discover?

Relax. She's not running from anything. She's returning home from a wedding shower, alone, in the desert, with no way to contact anyone in an emergency, eight-and-one-half months into her first pregnancy. Oops! Now she's in labor.

If Leigh has a dark secret, it's that she's about as sharp as a pound of wet leather.*

Hunky widower Chad delivers Leigh's baby in the back of his pickup truck. After that, the plot is as exhausted as the mom. What happens during the remaining 95% of the book is...

(CAUTION: SPOILER)

...nothing.

That's right, pretty much nothing happens. The sole source of tension is Leigh's reluctance to commit to a man who has a dangerous job. Why he would want a commitment from a woman like Leigh remains one of the great unsolved mysteries of the romance genre.

My best guess is that Leigh is the only woman Chad knows who lactates on the second date.

If that's not what has him so obsessed that he puts up with Leigh's passive-aggressive whining, I can't even hazard a guess. Aside from her breasts, which must be truly spectacular, Leigh's other memorable traits are a blank space where her sense of humor should be, and an inability to hear tragic revelations from Chad's past without throwing a temper fit because he didn't tell her sooner. She's the person for whom they invented the phrase, "It's all about me."

About halfway through "Shadows of Yesterday," I accepted that the plot twist I was hoping for wasn't likely to happen. If this plot developed a single wrinkle, Leigh would iron it.

So why did I stick around until the end? I blame Hurricane Wilma.

Reading by flashlight stops being fun after the first few nights of a power outage. So before Wilma arrived, I stocked up on Walkman batteries and books on CD. "Shadows of Yesterday" was the one I started on day 8 of a 10-day power outage. I'd have listened to the unabridged description of grass growing.

FYI, if you enjoy audio books during long car trips or extended power outages, there are some great selections in romantic suspense by Sandra Brown, Linda Howard and Karen Robards. The actor who reads Brown's "White Hot," Victor Slezak, adds a substantial amount of heat to an already sizzling novel.

I can promise you won't fall asleep listening to "White Hot," "Chill Factor" or the less substantial but still enjoyable "Demon Rumm." For insomnia, stick with "Shadows of Yesterday." If nothing else, you can use the CDs as coasters.

SHADOWS of Yesterday,
Can best be define as a very, favorful READ!
Perfect for those days when you ONLY want
a short, sweet & sassy taste of Romance on your tongue. Mmmm...nice!

3 out of 5 stars A very sweet but predictable cookie-cutter romance novel. .......2005-10-19

A good book for a quick romantic escape if the reader isn't looking for something too deep, nor true to real life. Yes, Chad wasn't upfront with Leigh about his wealth and his line of work, but it's understandable that he was being gentle and going slow with this new love and didn't want to scare her off. And Leigh was too skittish and could have avoided a lot of conflict with open communication rather than stewing anger and running away, but again, it's understandable considering her personal history. Despite these flaws, they were still quite likeable characters, and the reader is drawn into an emotional connection with them. I found myself wishing they were my friends, and cheering them on, hoping they'd find a way to work out their differences and make a life together.

2 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2005-10-13

One of the things that bothered me about this book was that Chad was not honest with Leigh. He wanted things to work out with them so bad that he really didn't consider her feelings. It's fiction so I won't rip on it anymore.

The book had a fast-paced interesting storyline. Mr Collins also managed to capture the characters and their "ways" of interacting as portrayed on TV. As a fan of the show, I enjoyed the read. Well worth the price I paid for it!

Private investigation isn't on the list of a southern belle's most desirable accomplishments--but it's saved Sarah Booth Delaney's Delta homestead. Now all she has to cope with is its bossy antebellum ghost who is determined to save Sarah--from spinsterhood. Then comes the perfect social occasion: Lawrence Ambrose's dinner party...

                  Buried Bones

Ambrose, once a famous man of southern letters, is planning a comeback: a delicious tell-all with a bitchy ex-model as his "biographer." As he taunts his dinner guests with the news that his book will blow the lid off Zinnia's darkest secrets, it becomes plain that each and every guest has a secret--and wants Ambrose to keep it. When the morning-after mess includes a bloody corpse and the manuscript of the biography disappears, Sarah Booth goes digging for answers. But many who hold them are six feet under--or soon will be--and if she doesn't tread carefully, she could join them any day now...

3 out of 5 stars Better than the first in the series.......2007-09-01

The writer continues to show promise. The story is more involved and amusing than the original book in the series. The ghost, Jitty, continues to be annoying. She reminds me of the annoying creature in the Star Wars recent movies. I like the character of Tinkie but can't say I am feeling too drawn to the main character, Sarah Booth Delaney. I have bought the other books in the series in hopes that the writer continues to improve. Plot development is still very weak.

4 out of 5 stars This author creates a great sense of life in the Miss. Delta.......2004-05-07

This book is in the category of "mysteries with literary merit" -- it's well-written, with lively, vivid characters and realistic dialogue, in addition to a good mystery plot. I would actually give it 4 1/2 stars if that were an option. The plot is just a little bit too tangled and complex, and it reminded me a little bit too much of the previous book in the series (scandals from the past causing problems in the present).

The plot involves a once-famous all-around artist-celebrity who is writing a tell-all book. Needless to say, he quickly ends up dead. Who killed him, and why? The motive is obvious -- he was about to reveal something that someone wanted to remain hidden -- but there are a lot of secrets about a lot of people likely to come out if this book is published, so the list of suspects is rather long, and the motive seems to lie in something that happened in 1940. Sarah Booth Delaney, former Southern upper class girl with a long pedigree and now impoverished orphan turned private investigator (of financial necessity), sets about trying to find out who the killer is -- and it may be someone she knows well and trusts.

This is the third book by Haines that I'm reading -- she makes me want to go visit the Mississippi Delta (where this series is set). I almost except to find Sarah Booth Delaney, the ghost Jitty, and the old plantation Dahlia House waiting for me -- not to mention a hound dog on the porch.

5 out of 5 stars Crazy characters and a great mystery in the deep South.......2000-11-25

Carolyn Haines' second Sarah Booth Delaney novel is as hilarious as the first. A mystery from a famous author's past seems to be the cause of his death and Sarah Booth is hired to find out who killed him. The resident ghost Jitty is not as essential to the story as in the previous novel, but she is just as funny. This is a definite must read.

5 out of 5 stars Keep Up The Good Work, Ms Haines!.......2000-11-09

Once again, Carolyn Haines has delivered a thoroughly entertaining and intelligent mystery. The novel's main character, Sarah Booth Delaney, is a real steel magnolia. The author's take on "Daddy's Girls" and the Southern culture that she and her main characters are part of, makes these mystery novels richer in theme as well as content. If you haven't read the first installment of this series, be sure to check it out. I have read that the author has a three book contract with her publisher, but hope this will not deter her from continuing her Sarah Booth Delaney mystery series. The descriptions of the main character, Sarah Booth, and her day-to-day dealings with trying to keep her old family plantation, her Southern way of life, deal with her great granny's nanny's ghost, plus continue her PI work, are witty and enthralling. Please keep up the good work, Ms. Haines and take comfort in the fact that even a Yankee woman (with Southern roots) loves your mysteries.

                  5 out of 5 stars A delightful paranormal mystery.......2000-11-01

She stole her friend's Yorkie and then pretended to find the dog in order to establish her credentials as a top-rate private investigator. The case paid so well that Sarah Booth Delaney was able to save Dahlia House, her Mississippi family home from a forced sale. The house has been in the Delaney family for generations and comes with its own resident ghost Jittey, an ancestor's nanny.

Sarah's reputation as a detective has become very strong at least in the small Mississippi Delta town. Thus, it is not surprising when the lover of now-deceased Lawrence Ambrose hires Sarah to uncover the identity of the individual who killed him. Sarah's new client believes the town's malicious vamp, Brianna, killed Ambrose. Sarah thinks otherwise especially since the victim publicly announced that he was writing a tell-all biography where many of the townsfolk's secrets are revealed. Sarah is up to her eyeballs in suspects and can only hope that she finds the murderer before she becomes corpse number two.

BURIED BONES is a par excellence regional mystery that is loaded with local color, atmosphere, and describes the lifestyle of a small post antebellum southern town. The likable characters are well drawn, especially the heroine, who refuses to conform to tradition and roots. The ghost is a delightful player whose soliloquies and overall advice leaves the audience laughing. No one can guess the killer's identity until Carolyn Haines shakes the bones enough to allow the audience to know who did it. That shocker adds zest to a great paranormal mystery.

                  Book Description

She’s a foreign correspondent for a British national newspaper. He’s the scion to an English dukedom. It is 1936, and they’re in Spain, Verity Browne because she is passionately committed to defending the Spanish republic against Franco’s imminent fascist threat and Lord Edward Corinth because she summoned him. She is investigating the killing of a Communist Party worker in the hills outside Madrid, and she desperately needs Edward’s help. The stakes for Verity in this murky murder case surpass the ideological, as the prime suspect—David Griffith-Jones, a senior figure in the Communist Party—also happens to be her lover. Against all odds and his personal inclinations, Edward saves his arch rival for Verity’s affections from a firing squad. This new adventure in David Roberts’s sophisticated mystery series set in the politically turbulent prewar thirties has, however, only just begun. It continues in London, where Edward becomes embroiled in the investigation of a second murder, the victim this time no Communist Party worker but rather a conservative banker. Unlikely though a connection between the two cases may be, Edward does find one. He discovers that both men attended Eton. So, Edward realizes, did another man who has recently died—on safari in Kenya, in what appears to be a shooting accident. An Etonian himself, Edward begins to suspect that more than the destiny of nations is determined on the playing fields of Eton. In their politically awkward, romantically charged alliance, the aristocratic Edward and Communist-sympathizer Verity together pursue the truth in a mystifying case that could endanger both their lives.

2 out of 5 stars Dorothy L. Sayers must be rolling in her grave.......2003-11-18

It may be true that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but if this is so, then David Roberts attempts to flatter Dorothy L. Sayers in much too obvious a way. Roberts' character Lord Edward Corinth is a pale (no pun intended) imitation of Sayers' wonderful Lord Peter Wimsey, right down to the aquiline nose and the habit of getting information by acting like a befuddled upper class twit. Verity Browne is a sort of Harriet Wimsey taken to the nth degree -- grating and unsympathetic, without any of Harriet's softer side. This novel has lots of fun 1930s detail and some decent plot twists, but for anyone who loves the Lord Peter books, it's painful to read.

3 out of 5 stars Only half of this duo is dynamic.......2002-10-29

The premise of "The Bones of the Buried" is promising: Lord Edward Corinth, a sensitive and earnest British aristocrat investigates three interconnected murders during the 1936 Spanish civil war. He does so with the "help" of Verity Browne, an upper class woman who is passionately commited to communist ideals.

Verity, unfortunately, dismembers what could and should be a satisfying read. There is no opposites-attract chemisty. In fact, this woman is so annoyingly selfish and shallow that Edward's love for her undermines his own credibility.

In his attempt to create a sparky but adorably vulnerable pro/antogonist, author David Roberts instead presents us with a one dimensional harridan who's too obnoxious to lend this book the richness of its premise.

For example, Verity has two lovers, one a smarmy writer and the other a ruthless terrorist, both of whom she adores - and she continually makes darn sure Edward knows it. She actually seems to enjoy degrading and abusing Edward, while he reacts meekly or with amusement. Yes, he's developing into quite a credibility problem for this reader.

I beg Mr. Roberts to do something about Verity before he loses his own believability. If this character can't evolve, then write her out and introduce Edward to someone who's his match for integrity and depth. Alternatively, give Edward a good thump on the head to wake him up. This man needs some romantic backbone!

                  4 out of 5 stars great reading.......2001-11-08

Here's a tip when reading "Bones of the Buried," have a piece of paper with all the characters names written down so that you don't start confusing one character with the other. This was especially true of the men in this mystery novel -- after a while, they all seem to be variations of a theme/mold. I'm usually rather good at being able to distinguish characters (and love novels that have lots of characters), but even I got confused a few times. Except for this small peeve, "Bones of the Buried" is a rather nifty and engrossing murder mystery, that is highly evocative of the period, and worth touting about as an excellent read.

Lord Edward Corinth has barely unpacked his bags and accustomed himself to being in London again after having spent six months in New York, when a rather hysterical Verity Browne turns up at his doorstep demanding his help. The last time that the pair spoke, Verity was on her way to cover the Spanish Civil War and keeping company with a rather obnoxious fellow communist party member, David Griffiths-Jones. Now, Verity wants Lord Edward to help save Griffiths-Jones from a Spanish firing squad. Apparently, Griffiths-Jones has been found guilty of murdering another communist party member, and a fellow Brit, Godfrey Tilney (an old Etonian whom Lord Edward remembers as being a bit of a bully and fairly unpleasant). Verity is certain that Griffiths-Jones is innocent, in spite of the circumstantial evidence against him, and wants Lord Edward to help her. Lord Edward is not so sure if he can indeed do anything to help save Griffiths-Jones from execution, but he agrees to set off for Madrid with Verity. What he finds is a country in chaos and full opposing little factions. Working against time, Lord Edward and Verity must navigate their way through all the petty internal politics and confusion in order to discover the evidence they need to set Griffiths-Jones free. But will they be able to accomplish this feat?

"Bones of the Buried" proved to be a highly engrossing read. I particularly liked that David Roberts took such care to get the feel of the period just right, and to explain the politics of the times in such detail. The mystery with all its little subplots that may or may not be interconnecting, was a brilliant brain teaser too. The character of Lord Edward seems to have matured a little since "Sweet Poison," however I really kept getting irritated and frustrated with the character of Verity Browne. In "Sweet Poison" she seemed to be on the path towards realising the difference between ideals and dogma, but in "Bones of the Buried" however, she seems to have lost her ability to face the unpleasant truth about the Communist party, and constantly lapses to mouthing the party line whenever something she'd rather not face surfaces. Verity Browne, in this novel, comes across as an insecure and unsure young woman when she was not passionately discussing world affairs. And I kept rooting for Lord Edward to snap out of this fascination he had for Verity, esp since all she seems to do is use him for her own ends, otherwise dismissing completely his abilities and opinions. It's not that much fun reading constantly of one major character putting the other down for whatever reason. However this is only an opinion I have; other readers may enjoy Verity's constant abuse of Lord Edward.

Barrng my nitpicking about the Verity Browne character, "Bones of the Buried" is indeed a really engrossing and fun read.

Readers of Kathy Reichs's cool and clever first forensic thriller Déjà Dead will recognize the ironic voice of Tempe (short for Temperance) Brennan, the North Carolina-born scientist who winds up working at the Laboratoire de Médicine Légale in Montreal. Here she bristles at the conservative attitudes of some of her Canadian colleagues. Despite the cold weather, Tempe's workload quickly becomes heavy: the bones of a long-dead nun now up for sainthood have been moved and tampered with; a deadly house fire turns out to be arson; and a university teaching assistant disappears after joining a cult. Tempe must figure out where (and why) all the bodies are buried in the hard Canadian ground. Her investigations take her home to North Carolina, and to a strange colony living on an offshore island. Unlike certain other writers who specialize in forensic pathology, Reichs doesn't revel in the horror of death or rub our noses in gore: she uses the science of death to reveal rather than to shock or startle. It definitely makes for easier reading--especially at mealtimes.

                              Product Description
