Book Description

For twenty-five years, Rose Lloyd has juggled marriage, motherhood, and career with remarkable success. It has been a life of family picnics, books and wine, a cherished house, and her own exquisitely designed garden-sunny and comfortable. But then the carefully managed life to which Rose has become accustomed comes crashing down around her when-over the course of a few days-her marriage and her career both fall apart.

Can Rose, whose anguish is barely softened by the ministrations of friends and grown children with their own problems, ever start over? Not easily. But it's amazing what prolonged reflection, the slimming effect of a lost appetite, a new slant on independence (and a little Parisian lingerie) will do. Especially when an old flame suddenly reappears.

Full of humor, clever insight, and a whimsical sense of the absurd, Revenge of the Middle-Aged Woman is an irresistible and finely written fantasy for anyone who ever wondered what a certain age would look like from beyond the looking-glass-and who will find it ripe with promise that the best days are yet to come.

Get ready to cheer for Rose Lloyd, a woman of young middle-age who proves that starting over doesn't have an age limit. After twenty-five years spent juggling husband, career, and kids with admirable success, Rose suddenly finds both her marriage and her career in unexpected ruin. Forced to begin a new life, she is at first terrified, then energized, by her newfound freedom-it's amazing what prolonged reflection, a little weight loss, a new slant on independence, and some Parisian lingerie will do for the psyche! Witty, insightful, and emotionally resonant, Buchan's novel will strike a chord with anyone who has ever wondered what Middle Age would look like from the other side of the looking glass (answer: much better than you could ever expect).

2 out of 5 stars Warning! It's not too late to cancel your order!!!.......2007-08-10

After reading the "blurb" on the back of the book, I was looking forward to tucking-in to a pleasant, light read. Early on, it was obvious that this story was FAR from what I expected. According to what was promised in the synopsis, "funny...witty", "...cheer for Rose Llyod...", "...this triumphant novel will strike a chord...", it sadly turned out to be NONE of the above. I never found any reason to cheer, as it was not that type of story, and I slogged through poor Rose's sad state of affairs. I also grew weary of the many flashbacks and ended up skipping some of these sections all together. If you are expecting what I expected out of this DEPRESSING book, you too, will be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother!.......2007-06-25

I found this book to be dreadful. I don't even know why I finished it. I would speed read through sections that were unbearable and pointless only to be disappointed with the main plot that never went anywhere. The title looked intriguing but this book was anything but that. I have to say that I will not be buying or checking out anymore books by this author..no matter how delightful the titles may sound.

2 out of 5 stars Where is the revenge?.......2007-05-26

Title does not fit the book. All she does is roll over and let the world walk all over her. I was dissapointed there was no revenge, even at the one point in the book it would have been easily available to her.

3 out of 5 stars not great/not bad.......2007-04-11

This was an entertaining read. Nothing so gripping or so wildly entertaining that I couldn't put it down, but it was a good 'no-brainer'. Once again I find myself grateful for the 'bargain books' section where I found it. How I long for one of those books that I just can't put down, that I stay up until the wee hours absorbed in......seems like forever since I've had my hands on one.

3 out of 5 stars A Tepid Tale.......2007-04-10

This novel could have been a gripping tale of a marriage's end, but instead it read like a watery, detached account from a woman who'd given up long ago. Am I the only reader who rolled her eyes when Rose basically lay down and played dead when she lost her job to her husband's new paramour? Talk about giving up without a fight. Maybe it's the American in me, but I would have been at the lawyer's within minutes after that encounter.

I had trouble believing that the woman dealing with her philandering husband with such equanimity and lack of emotion was the same Rose who trekked through the rainforest and longed for adventures a few decades earlier. Where did all the passion go? Rose also seemed much to eager and willing to take on responsibility for Nathan's behavior, saying she "should have known he was unhappy." Bollocks!

Despite these complaints, many of the secondary characters -- Poppy and Alice, in particular, were compelling and fun to read about, and rang quite true. I would have liked to see that same level of quirkiness and personality in Buchan's main characters.

"First Wives Club," this is not. But it is an interesting, thoughtful look at marriage, love, and relationships, and what makes them work.

          3 out of 5 stars No emotion.......2007-05-14

I shouldn't have expected much as I didn't fall in love with Buchan's previous "Revenge" book. But I was still disappointed with this novel. Minty was impossible to empathize with, and most of the other characters generated a similar feeling of apathy, if not downright antipathy.

A drawn-out tale of just rewards.

3 out of 5 stars Difficult to Read, Difficult to Like.......2007-03-05

This sequel to "Revenge of the Middle-Aged Woman" gives us a look at the "other woman," Minty Lloyd, 7 or so years after she stole Nathan, her friend and colleague's husband. That friend and colleague, Rose, was someone to greatly admire in the first book, as she reeled from the blow but handled her pain and anguish with grace and strength, and prepared to move on with her life.

We didn't know too much about Minty in that book, other than from Rose's point of view, and frankly, there was little to like. How could there be?

Now we see life from Minty's point of view. She is now the mother of twin boys, Felix and Lucas, and an unhappy wife, unhappy mother, unhappy woman and VERY VERY hard to like. Her boys are a drain on her. Her husband is a drain on her. Even her au pair, Eve, is a drain on her. She is working part time but wants to leave her boys, against Nathan's wishes, to work full time. She is miserable and whiny and so awful that it was hard to even turn the pages. Was this on purpose, or was there something the author wanted me to see that I missed?

Anyway, as another reviewer so aptly pointed out, Minty whines her way through her life, unspeakably hard and even cruel, in my mind, to her husband, and even her children on a different level, although she loves them. Then tragedy hits.

The second half of the book is the forced interaction between Rose and Minty, Rose's adult children, Poppy and Sam and their respective spouses, Minty's loyal (or maybe not) friends, and other interesting characters. But it is Rose and Minty who must finish the dance Minty started when she stole Nathan, and for the life of me, I found it hard to care.

This book is well-written, as are all of Buchan's books, but very hard going and a difficult read. It is somewhat interesting as a sequel, but not enough to have to struggle with the main character. Minty is supposedly redeemed in the end, but by that time I was so heartily sick of her, I didn't care.

          3 out of 5 stars A tame sequel.......2007-02-12

I like Elizabeth Buchan's incisive yet gently writing style and her sharp characterizations, but I had a few problems with this novel. First, Minty seems too different from her character in Revenge of the Middle Aged Woman. Second, there was little plot in this book, so the narratve had to be very character-driven, but without strong characters, it went almost nowhere. The wives in question did not behave badly at all, under the circumstances of the one "big event" of the plot. But then again, there was not much revenge in the first book so maybe this author's book's titles are wildly exaggerated to hint at things more exciting than they really are. She does have a really nice eye for detail, and for the ups and downs of modern life, marriage, and childrearing. but can a person like MInty, who was so shallow in the first book, truly become so transformed in six years?

4 out of 5 stars Finally a real book about Second Wives. .......2006-12-01

I listened to this audio book over several weeks. It made me laugh out loud and yell out suggested come-backs for Minty. Minty is an honest character that is muddling through a rough time and trying to compete with a "first" family. I found all the characters rich with personality and honest emotions. I did find it kind of long in the middle and wanted to get "on" with it.

          2 out of 5 stars Disappointing sequel.......2006-11-19

I loved Rose in "Revenge of the Middle-Aged Woman" and was looking forward to reading more about her. However, Rose doesn't put in an appearance until almost halfway through this book. It's all about Minty, the second wife. I found this book disappointing and light on the plot that the first book had.

Kate Reilly has a hard time trusting people.Six years ago, the love of her life turned her over to the vampire parasites who call themselves the Thrall. Now she is next in line to be the Thrall Queen--and each day might be her last as a human.Tom, a handsome firefighter, arouses all of Katie's dormant senses, but her heart shies away. After Dylan's betrayal, how can she trust any man-even a seemingly perfect and terribly sexy werewolf?Tom's sincerity--and sex appeal--begins to wear down Katie's defenses. But his increasingly insistent charm hides a potentially deadly secret: his werewolf pack is hiding the one person who can stop the Thrall from completing Katie's transformation into Queen--and they won't give her up.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  1 out of 5 stars AWFUL.......2007-04-05

First, I want to say I enjoyed the first of the Sazi tales and thought I'd give this new series a shot. That being said ...

I cannot understand the glowing reviews on this page. First problem - the main character Kate. She is uninteresting. A stereotype of the "strong and independent" female heroine -- owns her own apartment building but won't charge the high rents the neighborhood commands because she just doesn't have the heart for it. She is also the resident 'handy-man' who does all the repair and maintenance work herself. The authors might as well have given her a job as a waitress as an international courier since her job is totally irrelevant to the story and we never see her at work. Perhaps the most significant fault of all were Kate's inner monologues. I do not need to read an entire page devoted to why she enjoyed the British comedy "Fawlty Towers" and ordered the collection of DVDs. This does not add depth to her character or give me an inside look at her personality. Instead, it was boring, useless information useful for nothing more than "filler" and reads like the authors went off on a tangent while writing this book and forgot to continue with the story.

My second problem: Tom, the werewolf fireman/calendar model and Kate's new tenant and love-interest of the book - although calling him a love interest implies there was sexual tension between the two of them -- there wasn't -- or that they fall in love. Naturally, he claims to by the book's end, but I wasn't buying it. Tom's entrance to Kate's life was not believable -- he was being forcibly evicted from his old apartment because the landlord was prejudiced against werewolves. Kate, Ms. Independent, decides to come to his rescue and gives the landlord a comeuppance in front of Tom and all his firemen buddies while loaning her truck to move his furniture to her building. This totally neutered Tom as far as I'm concerned, mainly because of the authors' description of Tom's reaction -- awed gratitude, and he then spends another few pages drooling over her at dinner and showering her with compliments. As far as Tom being a werewolf, this was never illustrated, only referred to as a given fact. His pack is matriarchal, so apparently he is culturally conditioned to taking orders from a female.

The plot, while innovative and original, was too complicated and frankly, I don't have the energy to waste trying to criticize it. However, if you'd like an incisive and well thought-out review of the DVD collection "Fawlty Towers" -- read this book.

                  4 out of 5 stars Totally Enthralled!.......2007-01-29

Katie Reilly is Not Prey. She has killed a vampire and thus has earned the title of Not Prey. The Thrall, which is a vampire hive, run by one of the vampire queens, Monica, must leave Katie alone. But now the Thrall wants Katie to be their new queen, and all bets are off. I liked this new book by C.T. Adams & Cathy Clamp. I have read some of their Sazi series, and thoroughly enjoy reading what these authors write. The book had lots of action, a great line of characters including Tom, the werewolf, Joe, her brother, Father Mike, her priest and ex-boyfriend. I am looking forward to the next in the series. If you like paranormal action, you will like this book. I found it to be very light on the romance. There was just enough to keep it interesting but did not bog down the story.

3 out of 5 stars Vampires, werewolves, and zombies, Oh My!.......2007-01-21

Things you need to know first: Without the following information, the story would make little sense. First, "vampires" are not the Undead but are actually victims of a parasitic life-form, that call themselves the "Thrall." Once infected, by a Thrall Queen, one of the eggs will hatch, travel through the bloodstream of its Host, set up camp at the base of the brain, and take control. The Thrall are telepathic, with a hive mentality. Second, werewolves are also victims of a disorder, live in matriarchal packs, and co-exist with everyone else. Third, zombies are the result of abuse of a certain drug. Finally, if someone is bright, athletic, a skilled fighter, very determined, and at least somewhat psychic, they are "Not Prey," meaning that the Thrall might challenge them to a duel, but strict rules will be followed.

Story: Katie is an international courier, and she is Not Prey. Monica, a Thrall Queen who has worn out her Host body (that happens, you know), wants Katie as her successor, but cannot go after her, because Katie is Not Prey. Instead, Monica cooks up an elaborate plot, involving Katie's ex-boyfriend's niece, Dusty, to coerce Katie into surrendering her Not Prey status and becoming vulnerable to infestation. It just so happens that Dusty has been tagged by the werewolves as heir to the "Acca" or pack-leader. Oooh, that makes things messy. As Katie sets off to find and rescue Dusty, she suddenly has an ally in Tom, a fireman who happens to be a werewolf, and who also happens to be a calendar model.

What's good here: The story certainly has an interesting array of characters. Katie is not a vampire but could end up as one, Monica is a vampire queen, Katie's ex-boyfriend is a vampire, Tom is a werewolf, and Katie's younger brother, Bryan, is a zombie, while her older brother, Joe, is a hot-tempered doctor. There is also a lot of action, in the form of fights, confrontations, chase sequences, and bedroom scenes. The plot has many twists and turns, and gets increasingly complex, as the story progresses and the cast grows.

The technical aspects of the writing are good, as the story flows by quickly, there are no slow spots, and the word usage is appropriate to the complexity of the story.

What's not so good here: I had trouble finding a character here whom I liked and/or found realistic. I know that many of the characters are not regular people, but that's not what I mean by "realistic." Most of the characters come off as extreme examples of their various types, instead of three-dimensional people who happen to have supernatural aspects.

As the plot grows in complexity, that complexity initially seems to be a plus. It eventually bogs itself down, though, in details and characters who just happen to be able to do the one thing that suddenly becomes an essential thing to do.

The book also seemed unbalanced, to me. It is part supernatural thriller, and part romance, but the romance was overly emphasized and too steamy, to the point that it interferes with the supernatural thriller aspects of the story. I am not a big fan of romance stories, but I do like supernatural thrillers. I have seen them mixed well, in other books, like some of George Chesbro's "Mongo the Magnificent" novels, in Alex Archer's "Rogue Angel" stories, and in Jennifer Roberson's "Tiger and Del" books. In those books, the romance is there, and adds to story, without interfering with the main story.

A minor point: As the parasites take control of their host humans, why would they call themselves "The Thrall," when "thrall" is another word for "slave"?

Bottom line: If you're looking for a steamy romance novel with lots of action and supernatural aspects, "Touch of Evil" might be your cup of tea. But, if you want a supernatural thriller with romantic aspects, this book might disappoint you. It disappointed me, although not terribly, as it was still interesting.

1 out of 5 stars The only bad review I've ever written........2006-12-08

If you insist on reading this book, lower your expectations.

I honestly wasn't expecting much to begin with - just a few hours of entertainment. But the only thing I came away with after reading 'Touch of Evil' was the burning question, "How did this get published?"

The authors have followed the tradition of Laurell K. Hamilton's later novels, giving up all pretense of exploring the supernatural world or their characters and resorting to contrived plots to write hollow sex scenes.

The characters in 'Touch of Evil' are entirely static and homogenous. The thing I recall best about the proposed 'heroine' is that during a superfluous trip to the emergency room, she was willing to cut ahead of a crying boy with a bloody head injury. I felt more for that boy in his one sentence mention than I did for the heroine throughout the book's entirety. The woman is a culmination of an unrealistic number of skills and characteristics, as though the two authors were unwilling to compromise on their individual ideas. The resulting Wonderwoman is wholly unbelievable and unsympathetic. Not unlike Hamilton's Anita Blake, she is surrounded by several characters who adore and support her unconditionally. If only she deserved them. And if only I could remember who they were. The other main character, the heroine's love interest, is by all accounts a werewolf, yet aside from the initial statement of the fact, there's nothing to support it. To call this part of the shapeshifter genre is granting the book a classification it in no way deserves. Like the heroine, her soon-to-be bedmate is entirely forgettable, and perhaps even more cliché - he's a sexy fireman. In a calendar and everything.

The plot is rather lacking, as well. What's there is used as an excuse to create baseless and tedious sexual tension and finally get the characters between the sheets for a wholly underwhelming sex scene. Even what appealed to me most when buying this book - the original idea of the Thrall - ended up feeling like a bad sci-fi movie. Too much of the story hinges on the reader's attachment to the heroine, on their believing that the Thrall want her and believing that there are people willing to fight with her. I couldn't believe she was worthy of any of it.

4 out of 5 stars Great creatures, action and cool characters!.......2006-12-05

I enjoyed reading this novel particularly due to my admiration for the heroine--she's tough, strong, brave and yet has some faults. There were a few contradictions in her character's actions, possibly due to having two writers. She's independent and annoyed by her brother looking out for her and trying to protect her from the monsters...but occasionally submissive with the romantic interest about the same issues of protection but without monsters. I won't elaborate to avoid revealing too much.

Despite the occasional contradiction and corny comment/verbalization by these tough heroes, I enjoyed them, the action and the plot! I found it a very entertaining first novel and hope the next one eliminates these minor issues.

                  Thanks for the fun read!

                  Book Description

In this study of Hollywood gangster films, Jonathan Munby examines their controversial content and how it was subjected to continual moral and political censure.

Beginning in the early 1930s, these films told compelling stories about ethnic urban lower-class desires to "make it" in an America dominated by Anglo-Saxon Protestant ideals and devastated by the Great Depression. By the late 1940s, however, their focus shifted to the problems of a culture maladjusting to a new peacetime sociopolitical order governed by corporate capitalism. The gangster no longer challenged the establishment; the issue was not "making it," but simply "making do."

Combining film analysis with archival material from the Production Code Administration (Hollywood's self-censoring authority), Munby shows how the industry circumvented censure, and how its altered gangsters (influenced by European filmmakers) fueled the infamous inquisitions of Hollywood in the postwar '40s and '50s by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Ultimately, this provocative study suggests that we rethink our ideas about crime and violence in depictions of Americans fighting against the status quo.

Munby's book examines the gangster film in relation to industrial and cultural history and particularly the forces of censorship or moralism in Hollywood. This brilliant book tackles difficult questions of cultural analysis and film history and is eloquent to boot. Stellar reading, really inspiring for film--especially gangster genre--scholars.

5 out of 5 stars Why do we like gangster films?.......2000-05-10

This is a very exciting book about why many people find gangster films appealing and why at the same time lots of institutions of authority have found them to be threatening, right from the very beginning. For example, it provides a detailed background of the gangster film's origins in the early '30s, exploring matters such as the motivations for Prohibition, anti-immigration movements, and what was taken to be "proper" American speech, in order to provide a sense of the feelings of resentment these films tapped into and why their early viewers were so excited by them.

This sense of how gangster films have continually spoken for those otherwise ignored marks one of the book's most important themes. It also helps to provide an explanation of how the gangster film changed over the decades in response to attacks, both direct and indirect. The book describes and explains the gangster film's continual battles with various censors, within and without Hollywood, to show how these films continually evolved in ways that enabled them to cater again and again to those who would dissent with an oppressive status quo. Of especial interest is the chapter on German _film noir_ directors, which provides a very plausible account of why much _noir_ should be subsumed under the gangster genre. Dealing with the same issues of subversiveness and critical perspectives of existing power structures, much standard _film noir_ is more a continuation of the gangster film tradition than a break with it. Lots of other critics have noted this connection between these two types of films, but few have argued for it as forcefully, as clearly, or in as much detail as Munby. A tantalizing epilogue links these films to gangsta movies of the 1990s, a connection that one hopes will be worked out in more detail in the future.

Perhaps the most exciting thing about _Public Enemies, Public Heroes_, however, is that it explains how the violence and crime of gangster films appeals to us in ways that largely avoid the jargon-heavy vocabulary of much film studies scholarship today. The style, while dense, is not overlayed with extensive theoretical termimology. One can tell that Munby has reflected deeply on these matters and how to explain them to an audience that isn't necessarily a part of current theoretical discussions of film.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wished to understand better both the appeal of gangster films and what these films have typically reacted against. It shows that crime and violence, in narrative contexts, may be used to express in vivid and at times graphic detail objections to those things that order and structure our lives in oppressive ways.

4 out of 5 stars Book different than the movie.......2002-12-03

Having seen the Orson Welles directed movie, I recently bought a copy of this book. I was surprised at how different the original story is from the film. In the book, the main character is a district attorney in San Diego, not a narcotics officer from Mexico. And while Charlton Heston plays the Mexican officer in the film who's married to an American, in the book the DA is married to a Mexican woman. Also, the film takes place in a Texas town near the US-Mexico border while the book takes place (although not actually named) in San Diego. While the film is a masterpiece because of Wells' direction, the book remains a more believable story.

                      Book Description

The Gift of Touch is the third volume in Ross's ongoing examinination of the Western philosophical tradition in ethical terms, from the standpoint of the good, giving rise to endless responsibilities, resisting the neutrality of being and truth. The first volume, The Gift of Beauty, explored the link between art and the good in the light of Nietzsche's revaluation of all values and the second volume, The Gift of Truth, explored the ways in which truth and knowledge answer to a responsibility beyond themselves, given from the good. This third book traces Western ideas for corporeal bodies from Plato to contemporary feminist and poststructuralist writings, understanding corporeal things throughout nature as heterogeneous and expressive, interpreted in ethical terms, in relation to histories of domination and resistance. At the heart of the book is a reexamination of the good, found in Plato as that which gives authority to knowledge and truth. The good gives being in abundance, understood in terms of endless responsibility, giving rise to an ethics of inclusion.

                              Book Description

An original composition of selected quotes, short poems, and one fable. Designed to stimulate the imagination, as the reader contemplates the deeper meanings to these simple quotes. Phrases certain to find an enduring home in American culture. Selected from the lifetime collection of the author, each written at a particular time and for a particular reason, for example: "What you know is not important, it's what you do with what you know" was created by the author thirteen years ago as an automatic response to his daughter, Elizabeth; each time he reminded her of a duty, deadline, or responsibility, she would respond, "I know."

Fun to read. Sure to bring both a smile and a contemplative look from all who read it. The author blends humor, philosophy, and poetry in a marvelous way, creating a book which transcends many barriers. Insightful, imaginative, brilliant and stimulating. All America is certain to be injecting Steele Says into conservations from the boardroom to the bathroom.
