2 out of 5 stars Don't except too much..........2007-09-04

I bought this book for an easy read and boy, what an easy read it was. Looking back, I can't honestly say that I really remember who the characters were or what the plot was about because I had been, and still am, a little peeved by the author's over use of hyphenated sentences that weren't-necessary-and-were-used-almost-every-other-page. Aside from that the book was a good choice to tick the time away with and, like many other reviewers stated, the story seriously lacked any sort of depth. The characters and situations seemed to be very high school and trivial, definitely not something I could picture a mid-20s "city-living, working girl" to drag herself through.

I loved this book. It is true to heart and you feel like the book is written about you!! keep up the great work Sarah! Great meeting you last year at your reading with Lauren in NYC.

5 out of 5 stars Cute, witty, fun, and something I can relate to!.......2007-07-12

I loved this book. I've always been a fan of the British Chic Lit and wondered for a long time why American writers could never quite relay our inner thoughts the way Sophie Kinsella or Marian Keyes can. And while I'm starting to discover more American (and British) authors that I enjoy in the same way, Sarah Mlynowski gets it. This book had everything in it that I love in chic lit: Cute, witty, fun, and something I can relate to! I'm 27 now and better adjusted to the "grown-up", but this book placed me right back to my immediate post-college 24-year old days. Every character in this book reminded me of someone I know. It was a lot of fun thinking back to how ridiculous we used to be sometimes (and still often are), but through all that ridiculousness we grew up and became better, much more intricate people. I highly reccomend this book.

1 out of 5 stars Harlequin romance with a cuter cover.......2007-05-25

Bad writing, lame characters, just a horrible book for anyone with half a brain!

2 out of 5 stars Adult woman behaving like a teenager.......2007-01-22

Wow, here we have a woman in her mid twenty's who can't think or talk about anything else than her boyfriend, or finding one for that matter.

If the scenario were changed so that Jackie (the main character of the book) were living with her parents, instead of her roommate Sam and her job as copy editor to be high school student this might have worked find in the "young adult" genre.

However I think most mature adult woman want more than this rambling on about nothing else than boyfriends and are pretty bored reading 281 pages about Jackie's dating troubles.

The same thing also happened with MONKEY BUSINESS, where almost 30 year old business school students are displayed more like freshmen college kids living in coed dorms and being on a food plan.

Interestingly enough I just found out that the author now actually writes books in the "young adult" genre, and I think teenagers might find interest in it, good that she found her true calling!

      4 out of 5 stars Dead Men's Secrets - An Overlay.......2007-09-18

This book provides a pragmatic view of the history of mankind and makes it main points within the first ten chapters (albeit short chapters). A historical timeline of mankind's progress on page 38 or so, an assertion by the author, is something that can be easily overlooked or dismissed, but is well worth studying and thinking about.

With the idea that mankind is struggling back from it's glorious past, it is not hard to imagine that societal structures like the church, ruling families and elected gov'ts, can(and probably did) withhold information of a previous high civilization, so as to retain power or guide society in certain directions; and at least the author brought this idea out and put it to paper for us all to ponder.

P.S. After reading this book, I find myself looking extra carefully at museum artifacts and routinely dismiss archeology articles citing we were half wits, fumbling around in caves, me cold, me find mate...ugh ugh (this still happens today but only after 5 or 6 beers at the local pub!).

      4 out of 5 stars Dead Men's Secret's.......2007-08-10

This book is the most complete book I've read so far on out of place artifacts. I gave it 4 stars due to a few spelling errors but it covers the so called out of place artifacts the world over. However if you have an evolutionary world view this book will probably give you nightmares.

      2 out of 5 stars Book.......2007-05-27

It had a lot of interesting ideas and info, but with out much actual evidence it wasnt that great a read. There was really no detal to any of the items brought up.

1 out of 5 stars gives no info.......2007-05-06

for a book on discoveries, it gives almost no information on them. it simply lists supposed discoveries. exactly where, exactly when, and by whom? who knows? this book doesn't tell you. it's a real disappointment.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting -- but skims the surface.......2006-08-17

Interesting -- but skims the surface

This book is mostly brief references to historical anomalies and odd findings of past civilizations. The actual references for the sources of the book are lacking detail, which takes away credibility.

The majority of the book is complied as a few paragraphs at the beginning of a chapter followed by a list of items which are suppose to back up the authors contention that a civilization much greater in technology than our own once inhabited the Earth.

Time might better be spent reading "Ancient Man: A Handbook of Puzzling Artifacts" by Wm. Corliss or "The Hidden History of the Human Race" by Cremo and Thompson.

Overall entertaining if you are looking for light reading on the topic of historical anomalies.

Was it worth it Martin? Hero is no word for a hood turned tout.

Recommended reading would be a book called "Ten men Dead" about real men and real heroes who suffered at the hands of Thatchers Government and the RUC, a far more truthful account of the troubles.

Tremendous book . I had Read It Several Years ago , When i was in the Uk, saw it on Amazon , and read it again .
Martin Mc Gartland is a tribute to the Irish People .
A young man who became an agent for the special branch, knowing that if he was found out by the IRA it would mean Torture , then certain Death.....
He was known as 'agent Carol' and gave vital information which saved many lives both protestant and catholic.
His title of the book "Fifty Dead Men Walking" is an understatement , i truly believe he saved alot more than fifty.
It is an essential read, and also to read his second book "dead Man Running" Thankyou Martin , for all you have sacrificed.....

      Book Description

Del Farmer isn't your ordinary hardboiled private eye. Instead of collecting fingerprints or clues, he collects souls of the recently dead. His latest dead guy, Brad Larsen, might just be the key to destroying Farmer's longtime nemesis, The Association. Of course, Farmer is sadly mistaken. An FBI agent unstuck in time is toying with him. A mysterious couple keeps trying to kill him. Another job - a mundane babysitting gig that pays the bills - is threatening to steer him way off course into a violent hell of sexual deceit, fractured identities and cheap apartment toilets.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Imaginative.......2005-07-14

This book is a fantastic combination of an imaginative premise, traditional mystery/crime elements, and humour. The story is both unique and compelling, with some of the most colourful characters I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Some parts do require careful reading; there are a lot of characters and some of the action (especially near the end) gets wonderfully complicated.

5 out of 5 stars Swierczynski is a master of the imagination.......2005-07-12

Wow, what an incredible story. The author is brilliant in his story-telling and imaginative concepts - truly a surprise at every turn of the page. It was one of those books that sucks you into its alternate reality and won't let go. It's definitely a book for the adventurous reader - there's plenty here to keep your mind going days after you've finished. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone - your friend, your co-worker, your grandmother. I can't wait to see what he writes next.

5 out of 5 stars A Weird and Infinitely Compelling Read.......2005-06-13

"Secret Dead Men" is in a realm by itself.

When I picked up this book, I literally couldn't imagine where the author would take me from one page to the next. Swierczynski creates this odd afterlife (not the kind learned at church) and forces the reader to emotionally invest into the whacky characters and their plights.

Set in Philadelphia in the seventies, I didn't understand any of his cultural allusions. However, by the end of the novel, I was fully familiar with the Brain Hotel, the soul stealing capabilities of the protagonist, and even had a new appreciation of toilets.

This is the kind of book that will make you giddy with the eccentricity of it all... and might make you a tad disappointed in the next book you pick up. But, don't fear... I think the author has another novel coming out soon.

If it's anything like "Secret Dead Men," buy it on a long weekend. You'll want to do nothing else!

4 out of 5 stars Check into the "Brain Hotel".......2005-04-25

This is a book that is different, fun, and unusual. I found having a little trouble keeping track of the characters at times, but enjoyed the writing, mix of characters and unique concept behind it all. A very enjoyable read.

      4 out of 5 stars The Book's Got Soul.......2005-03-08

When a man and his wife are found murdered in the tiny town of Woody Creek, Illinois, the FBI are called out to the scene, including our protagonist Special Agent Kevin Kennedy. The dead couple were part of the witness protection program at the time of their brutal murder. Sounds like your standard opening to a run-of-the-mill thriller, doesn't it? But this is anything but. You see, not only is Kevin Kennedy really Del Farmer, but Del Farmer has been dead for years.

In a nutshell, Del Farmer was murdered by The Association, which is his name for the unknown members of the Las Vegas mob, with whom he had run afoul thanks to his work as an investigative journalist. When he died, his soul was "collected" and stored inside the mind of another person effectively keeping him alive, at least in spirit if not in body. He now controls that body and devotes his time to hunting down The Association with the aim of eliminating them. Along the way he collects the souls of the dead, using their talents to draw him nearer to his goal. But while Del is concentrating on satisfying his thirst for revenge he is unaware that one of the souls he has collected is about to send his virtual world spinning out of control.

Secret Dead Men is a fast-paced story based around murder, revenge, peace of mind and peace in mind. . The obvious difference here to other murder investigation stories is that people are seeking revenge for their own murders! Author Duane Swierczynski (it's pronounced the way its spelt) has come up with a mind bending scenario for life after death and the possible fate of your soul once it has departed the body. Starting with the intriguing concept of a soul collector, he runs with it, developing a complex virtual world within the mind where just about anything is possible: the construction of a Brain Hotel, face-changing, possession of other bodies and inanimate objects, resurrection from the dead.

This is a lively thriller with the added spice of a whole new dimension inside the head of the protagonist. Swierczynski sets the parameters early on giving us a credible account of just how the whole soul getting collected and stored in another body thing works. He then sets about ripping those parameters to shreds, introducing unexpected twists that are startling when they arrive forcing a necessary adjustment in thinking. It's off-beat, but it is amazingly effective opening all sorts of possibilities to explore.

Just when you get comfortable with that idea and the hunt for The Associates is in full swing, we are knocked off balance once again with a riveting battle taking place, not out in the real world where you'd expect it, but from within. It's a battle of souls and you are reminded that nothing is forever, not even the afterlife. I mean, how do you kill a soul? If it's already dead, can you make it even deader? We get to explore the possibility that maybe you can.

In his debut novel, Duane Swierczynski has created a quirky story that is part hardboiled private investigator novel, part psychological thriller, part supernatural suspense story. It's original, tremendously entertaining and, as worlds crumble, bodies die and souls remain, it also becomes extremely thought-provoking. I found it a very enjoyable novel that appealed to my love for the hardboiled crime novel and my desire for a refreshing change of pace.

In Dead Men Talking, Nicholas Davies details the covert killing operations planned, organized, and carried through by the RUC Special Branch and MI5, as well as by the British Army's covert intelligence organization, the Force Research Unit. He provides information on a number of the killings, which were authorized at the highest level of MI5 and the British government. Davies uncovers the true story of the murder of Belfast solicitor Patrick Finucane and the subsequent murder of UDA gunman William Stobie. Dead Men Talking exposes the massive cover-up operation which began when Brian Nelson, the UDA's chief intelligence officer, was arrested and persuaded with a massive bribe to plead guilty to conspiracy to murder. The sensational facts surrounding Nelson's apparent sudden and unexpected death in the spring of 2003 are also revealed.

Jonathan Gray weaves together what modern science is scared to touch. Learn what the texts of ancient civilizations are revealing to us and why our so called open minded academics are scared to acknowledge this new information as it comes to light.

Inside you will get glimpses of what the ancient cultures of this earth where really like, and why their sudden disappearance.

The author gives the reader quite a bit of scientific facts to back up his theories. There are also some photos in the book of ancient objects that were found, that the modern world cannot yet recreate.

The only thing that could have been better about this book was the quality of the photos is not very good, and I would have liked to see more photo's also.

5 out of 5 stars Tantalising Hints, Indeed.......2004-12-30

"Dean Men's Secrets" tackles the ancient archaelogical anomalies mentioned by Graham Hancock and the like. If you've read his books, you know the questions that are being asked. How were the pyramids built? How were stones bigger than any we can lift today with macuhinery carried from quarries across treacherous mountains. Why do so many religions have a story of a worldwide flood? Why are gods in "flying chariots" often mentioned in myths and legends? Is carbon dating really that accurate? Questions like these have sparked the imagination of many.

Daniken pointed the finger at aliens. Jonathan Gray and his think tank of associates come up with a different theory. A very different theory. Gray suggests that there was a worldwide flood, that wiped out all mankind. There was Noah and his ark, and everything that went with it. Not only was the original world population wiped out, but a super civilization with technology beyond our own was as well. They had planes, they had ships, they had machinery, they had electricity. They may even have travelled in space. Post-flood, the descendants of Noah tried to recreate past glories, but whose memory, knowledge and lifespans soon dwindled away. Mankind used to live a lot longer. We are not becoming more intellegent, we are not evolving for the better, says Gray, we are getting worse, in accordance with Newton's second law of thermodynamics rather than Darwin's theory of Evolution. Aliens were not the white giants of lore, we were!

It's a Christian perspective, yes, but the very, very interesting thing is that Jonathan Gray was not a Christian when he started. At the time of writing the book, you can tell he's still trying to make sense of it as much as his readers. With a very enjoyable, easy going writing style, he uses a combination of speculative fiction, stories of his archaeological findings, reasoning and stockpiles of evidence to prove his point - be they survivng artifact anomalies, written descriptions, or interpretation of myth, legend and oral folklore from all around the world. Even if you're not convinced, you'll learn a lot about world cultures on the way. There are some very interesting pieces of myth and folklore out there.

Like the previous reviewer mentioned, the sparse amount of footnotes is a bit frustrating. On almost every footnote there was, I scuffled back to the end of the book to read more, eager to know where this evidence had come from. The important thing is that Gray has gathered the evidence from the many books on ancient anomalies, the archaelogical journals and articles on "the unexplained" and his own findings, and brought them together into an easy to read, easy to flick through book. The evidence tables are very easy on the eye, you can scan through and find the evidence you want. Think of it as a compendium of evidence, a quick reference point. If you are searching for more, the bibliography Gray provides is quite substantial. I must get my hands on some of the books he mentions. There are very few pictures, though thanks to the internet, you can find pics of many of the things Gray mentions. Just punch it in to a search engine, you're sure to find some of it.

I'd recommend this book to those interested in archaeology, Christians looking for some evidence to counter the case for evolution and back up their faith, and to lovers of the unexplained. It's another theory to add to the pot. Very tantalizing hints indeed. It's my favourite book addressing ancient anomalies, and I have read it time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and thoughtful.......2003-12-06

An interesting book that takes a more careful look at some of the neglected aspects of the history of humankind.

          1 out of 5 stars Psuedo-Science at its best........2003-09-14

I found this book rather disturbing seeing as how anything can be published in these days. It purports such monstrous notions that there was a world flood which has been debunked by common sense alone, for example: If there was a world flood and every creature that breathed oxygen drowned, then why wasnt there a break in history? Egyptians never noticed a flood.

In all honesty, this book isnt worth your money.

5 out of 5 stars Reveals astonishing technology that once existed.......2001-12-18

When you read in the Bible that man originated straight from the hand of God and lived for an average lifespan of 900 years, just think what Einstein and Tesla, to name a few, could have done given the same advantages. Due to the world wide flood, much of the evidence is gone, but some of the knowledge and artifacts remain to prove before and after the flood that they had a technology that far surpasses ours in many instances.
