5 out of 5 stars Really Good Book !!.......2005-12-29

The first book i read from Linda Howard was " Diamond Bay " and i've been trying to get a copy of " Midnight Rainbow " since then . Well finally i got the book and belive me this is another keeper ; i loved , loved , loved it !! When i started i couldn't stop , the story is full of action , and HOT , HOT romance !! God ,Grant was so intense , so powerfull and Jane is the perfect match for him .
I'm just sorry that Linda Howard's books aren't just like this oldies ; i mean her lattest books are great but not as they used to be .

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2003-11-24

Story Summary: Grant Sullivan is hired to find Jane Greer, who has been kidnapped. Once he rescues her from the bad guys they travel through the jungle where they become lovers. She falls in love with him while he tries to fight the same feelings. There is some suspenseful moments since this is somewhat a spy verses spy book. Now to why I liked the book.

First, Grant was great. He was rough and demanding but hey, he had to be to keep them alive.

Second, Jane was great. She was strong but always kept a sense of humor. I loved her bag of tricks that she kept. Typical woman.

I didn't like the end that much. It was rather hokey but it didn't take away from the story.

Also this is where you first meet Kell Sabin, who will have his own story in Diamond Bay. I recommend you buy this book first, then Diamond Bay, then Heartbreaker (because that is the sequal to Diamond Bay) and then White Lies (which also features Kell Sabin). A very good read if you can find this book.

5 out of 5 stars Deceptive Title.......2002-11-25

I read this a few years ago and wished the title were more descriptive. I love Linda Howard's alpha males and Grant is certainly that and more. Jane the heroine is no wimp making for one heck of a good read.
Jane's father hires Grant, a retired government weapon, to retrieve her from the clutches of a bad guy in Costa Rica (?), and does he ever. From the very beginning this is a total action book, not one dull moment.
If you have to be lost in a jungle, Grant is your guy. A tough nut to crack but Jane eventually does it. Very hot! This book you wont put down.

5 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction Book Review - Kate Shelley and the Midnight Express.......2007-04-29

I read the book Kate Shelley and the Midnight Express.

This book is exciting and filled with suspense. The story begins on a girl's family farm that is flooding, near a train trestle that has been destroyed. The girl, Kate Shelley, tries to save two rail workers who have fallen into the river. She realizes that the midnight train with 200 people on board will be coming and that it will fall off the bridge too unless it is warned.

I learned some interesting facts. Kate used a lantern to light her way in the storm. When she finally reached the station, a telegraph was used to warn the train. The storm was so bad Kate's lantern blew out and 40 miles of telegraph lines went out.

I would recommend this book for three reasons. This is a true story about a courageous girl who lived in the 1800's. The story is exciting and filled with danger. It shows that one person can make a difference.

Kate Shelly and the Midnight Express is an amazing book.

I read Kate Shelley and the Midnight Express for my April book report. I enjoyed this book because it was so exciting and filled with suspense. The story begins on a girl's family farm that is flooding, near a train trestle that has been destroyed. The girl, Kate Shelley, tries to stop a train from falling off the wrecked trestle. 5 out of 5 stars Excellent for a Bible lesson, too!.......2001-04-13

This book is a "must have" for your child's collection! Not only is this heroic account a wonderful piece of history, but it is also a very good lesson on the power of prayer. I read it to my 1st-3rd grade Bible class along with scriptures on prayer. My students' attention didn't waver for a moment while I read this book to them.

In the story, Kate's mother at first begs her not to attempt to rescue those in a train wreck. Rather than disobey her mother, 15-year-old Kate reasons with her and obtains her permission to go. Her widowed mother promises that their family will be praying for her. Kate then risks her life to save many others. When a tree in the flood waters is just about to collide with the bridge Kate is on, she prays and it is suddenly pulled under the water. Do you suppose Kate succeeds in her mission to save over 200 people? Read this book. You won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars Kate Shelly and the Midnight Express.......2001-01-18

The pictures went along very well with the story. That was a good idea to make the book because it is good to write stories about the past, living in the country and saving people. The book was very good, a little hard, but it was a good story. I understood it very well. My teacher was talking about it. She said it was before WW1.

5 out of 5 stars True story of a young girl who prevented a train wreck.......1999-02-07

This is a wonderful story about a real-life girl whose personal heroism stopped a train from wrecking on a collapsed bridge. This story was profiled on PBS's "Reading Rainbow" program, hosted by Levar Burton. Actor Brian Dennehy narrated the version on PBS. Kate Shelley was a young girl who lived in a small Iowa farmhouse. Near the house, a railroad line crossed a stream called Honey Creek. One night, there was a terrible storm. Kate and her family heard an engine moving on the line to check the bridge -- but then the bridge collapsed, the engine went down, and the Midnight Express was coming! Kate had to make it to the nearest station, but that was across another bridge.... You will have to read the book to find out the rest for yourself. You and your children will love this book!!

                Setting: Scotland, 1819
                Sensuality Rating: 9

Beautiful Scotswoman Catriona Hennessy knows that she must eventually marry and so decides that she requires a mild-mannered, biddable husband, a man who will agree to father a daughter to inherit Casphairn Manor and who will leave her free to manage her holdings without interference. Unfortunately, the spirit of the earth that protects the manor and its valley, the Lady of the Vale, has other plans. The Lady firmly tells Catriona that the man who shall father her children is none other than Richard Cynster, better known throughout the land as "Scandal." Richard is definitely not the mild-mannered man Catriona had in mind, and even worse, he's English. Although Catriona fights the command of the Lady, all she gets for her efforts is a headache.

The two unlikely lovers are thrown together in a cold Scottish castle by the reading of a last will and testament. And while Richard is wildly attracted to the lovely Scottish lady, marriage doesn't cross his mind until the will is read and he is compelled to consider the subject. Richard's restless search for family and home becomes focused on Catriona and any doubts he has are quickly erased by his already raging physical attraction to her. Convincing Catriona that they are well-suited, however, is another matter entirely. Who will win this battle of wills--Richard or Catriona? And how will Richard resolve his need to protect and defend Catriona while leaving her free to fulfill her responsibilities to the Lady of the Vale?

Laurens's latest tale will impress readers with its intense sensuality, colorful Scottish scenery, and strong, expertly drawn characters--from the hero and heroine down to the most minor member of the cast. Combine those elements with a competent plot, throw in an intriguing glimpse of ancient mother earth worship in the British Isles, and it all adds up to a novel well worth reading. --Lois Faye Dyer

1 out of 5 stars What was Ms. Laurens thinking?.......2007-05-29

This book disgusted me on so many levels. My largest objection may have predisposed me not to like this book but I doubt it. First off, I read PROMISE IN A KISS which was Sebastian and Helena's story. I absolutely loved that book. Helena's desire not to marry a powerful man was so believable and made Sebastian have to work so hard for his pleasure it was delicious. Then I am to believe that five short years into their marriage Sebastian goes off to Scotland and CHEATS on his beloved Helena simply because he felt sorry for the unhappily married woman he meets there? That was offensive enough and then we are to believe that Helena simply accepts his infidelity and says "aren't you clever to give me another son." Give me a break. What an insult to a lovely couple.

Onto Scandal's story. I found it so offensive that Catriona drugs Richard and thinks the Lady wants her to STEAL a child from him while he is sleeping. If a man did that to a woman it would be called rape and as far as I'm concerned she raped Richard. What a love story. As if that wasn't a sick enough "religion" then her fellow believer thinks the Lady wants her to poison Richard once he's filled the bill. And then they were going to keep her around to raise the kiddies? What nut hatch did Richard fall into?

I think the Cynster family should have carted him off home for reprogramming and left them all to rot in their little vale of crazies.

Better yet Richard should never have been created.

                1819, Scotland

Despite the reviews, I did enjoy this third book in the Cynster Series. It is much like the first two books in the plot and I enjoyed the characters. The beginning is interesting enough to keep your interest, though I thought it slowed somewhat in the middle and as in most romance novels, it ended happily. I will continue reading the series.

1 out of 5 stars Move on to something more worthwhile.......2006-07-08

Aside from all the supernatural jargon and historical misses, the story started out well enough and I did manage to read the book to the end although not consecutively and certainly not enthusiastically. I just wasn't able to get into it as deeply as I would have liked. The problem was not so much the characters as it was the plot. I mean, a witch in those days being able to live so openly and so socially accepted that she could lead her own flock ... come on. "Witches" back in those days had to practice their science secretly. Those who were bold enough to be as open about their beliefs as Catriona was about hers were burnt at the stake. I understand the author intended to portray Richard as the one who would protect her from such a fate, but even so, that would have proven to be a formidable feat. He would, after all, be one man and a few followers against the masses.

Secondly, this matter about Richard's birth and upbringing. In regency England, society was very stringent about maintaining the bloodlines of a peer. Please recall that Sebastian was a duke for heaven's sake. Richard, being a bastard and the son of a scotswoman, would not have enjoyed the wide social acceptance he received, irregardless of the Cynsters influence. I understand an author's entitlement to artistic freedom, but a story becomes boring and uninteresting when it is written out of context. It's like reading about 21st century characters living and loving in the 21st century yet behaving like they're living in the 18th century. You know how sometimes we look at the Amish and shake our heads? You sort of get the same feeling when you read this book. It just doesn't add up.

And finally, I will say it again, I don't think anyone would deny Stephanie Lauren's entitlement to some level of artistic freedom, but I can not abide by either party, man or woman, in a relationship, having to ask the other's permission to speak. While this sort of dominance in a female will no doubt have a certain appeal to some women, not only is it farfetched and ludicrous for that time, it's a downright insult to any self-respecting and learned neo-feminist who reads the book. Marriage should be about partnership, teamplay and personal freedoms. Empowering a woman with the same chauvinistic liberties as those who (try to) oppress her is simply a disgrace to women everywhere. We all know what they say about an eye for an eye. Stephanie Laurens forgets not only herself but also her audience when she pens a story of this nature.

Not only does Richard not live up to his character but it also brings to mind the thought that if nothing is wrong with a strong, dominant female what's wrong with a strong, dominant male? They might knock heads, yes, but which meaning of the word equality are we using here? If it's the one according to the Cambridge english dictionary and most other dictionaries I've come across for that matter, it just doesn't seem right to ask for something that one is not willing to give.

I know this review may seem a bit harsh, but I give credit where credit is due. Stephanie Laurens is a good author, she can do much better than this. I've been reading her novels for years and have enjoyed a vast number of them. But in her attempt to create something fresh, she creates a shell of a book and makes waste of characters who had such great potential. It is sad.

I would say that if she's going to twist the lines of history to suit her plot, I'd recommend doing as Lisa Kleypass does and leave her readers a note that explains this and the reasons behind her choices. Then I'm sure many would be a lot more understanding and tolerant of these misses instead of having to wonder if their favourite authors are just trying to insult people's intelligence.

If you agree with anything that was written above, don't bother with this one. I'd recommend reading All About Passion instead and anything by the phenomenal Laura Kinsale and Penelope Williamson. Here are two novelists who are so versed at their art that you'll never come across the same misses as you did here.

3 out of 5 stars Thank God for the appearance of the other Cynsters.......2004-12-14

What happened with Scandal's story? I can appreciate that Stephanie Laurens was probably trying to be different after the similar plot of the first two books, but why the Lady of the Vale story?

Of all the heroines in the Bar Cynster novels, I am not sure which one I like the least - Catriona or Patience. Richard deserves better. And I certainly don't believe that Helena and Devil would have bought the whole Lady of the Vale concept either. In fact, I don't think that any of the Cynsters would have bought it at all and act as if it were all normal.

Sure the love scenes are hot, but the only thing that really saved this for me was the extended appearance of Devil and Honoria and the other members of the family. It was just hilarious when they started appearing at Catriona's doorstep. I actually didn't want them to leave. For that part alone, this book is worth reading.

                1 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED!.......2004-07-02

After reading the part after the will and all that jargon about her being a witch!? Why Richard why?? This was the worst book that I have every read! Witches and gentlemen do not mix!!!!!!!! I was so disappointed. I could not believe what I was reading. I hoping and hoping that he would leave her and find someone BETTER at the ton. A story needs to be rewritten about Richard with someone else as his wife. :(

1 out of 5 stars As anthologies go, terrible. Don't waste your money!.......2001-11-09

I knew there was a reason I tend to avoid anthologies; this one has reminded me of it with a vengeance. Basically, most anthologies aren't worth the paper they're printed on: you get a selection of authors, some of whom may not be very good, and shorter stories than usual, some of which - if they are at all good - don't benefit from being compressed into under 100 pages.

This book is very definitely a case in point. We have novellas from Jo Beverley (normally excellent), Tanya Anne Crosby, Samantha James and Kathleen Woodiwiss - three authors I'd never come across before and whose work therefore I know nothing about. After reading this anthology, I know to avoid their work in future.

The Beverley novella, The Determined Bride, was interesting, but I kept feeling that I'd come in halfway through the story. Told by her soldier husband that their marriage hadn't been genuine, Kate desperately wants her baby to be legitimate. Unfortunately, her 'husband' has just been killed in battle. His commanding officer offers to marry her to give the baby a name. Afterwards, Kate returns to England with her son - but what of Captain Charles Tennant, the man she's just married? Does she want him? Does he want her? How does he really feel about having a legal son who is not his biological child?

An intriguing premise, written with something close to Beverley's usual style; but too rushed. Perhaps three stars.

Next, there is Tanya Anne Crosby's A Kiss After Midnight. Two children brought up together are separated when Victoria's father, a duke, becomes concerned about her friendship with the gardener's son. Can their love survive? What happens when Victoria needs to marry to save her estates? To begin with, I thought her hero, Thomas, was American; his internal narrative in the first few pages is entirely American in dialect and vocabulary. Too many things didn't ring true in this story for me to take it seriously. For instance, apparently Thomas and Victoria drove to Gretna Green in under five hours. So where were they? North of the Lake District and in the middle of nowhere fifty miles south of the border? Unlikely. And did Victoria really not recognise Thomas??

Oh, and *what* is "a'tall" supposed to mean? That simply isn't a word. It's not an expression used anywhere in the UK (or in Ireland, in case Crosby thinks it is). If she means 'at all', then she should say so. Terrible. One star.

The next story is Samantha James' Scandal's Bride. It was readable, more or less, though Victoria seemed to me to behave like a spoilt brat. I can't understand what Miles saw in her; he should have refused to marry her and insisted that her father sent her back to the country until she grew up. Two stars, maybe.

And finally, Kathleen Woodiwiss's Beyond The Kiss. This, I gather, is the sequel to another book by Woodiwiss. She spends the first dozen pages summarising Raelynn and Jeff's story to date (tedious exposition of an overly melodramatic tale) before launching into this story. The language is extremely overblown -talk about purple prose! The dialogue is stilted: I couldn't believe some of Jeff's speeches. Take this:

"In my lengthy quest for the woman of my dreams, I cannot deny that I've tested my heart with others, but they never assuaged that unsettled feeling gnawing at my vitals. I tell you no lie, madam, when I say that of those maidens I've courted, I favoured none with a plea to be my wife. Whatever enticements inspired me to seek their company were ephemeral, as fleeting as the morning dew." Ewwwww!!!!! I couldn't take this guy seriously at all.

In fact, I couldn't even finish this story. After 30 pages of it I'd had enough, and it's definitely put me off reading any more by Woodiwiss. I can't believe she's considered to be a top historical fiction writer! Zero stars.

Don't waste your money on this one.

3 out of 5 stars Married at midnight.......2001-06-25

It's not easy to rate four stories with one mark, so I do it one by one:

„The determined bride" - I give it 3 stars. It's not a bad story, but I found something missing there.

„A kiss after midnight" - nice, but just a little bit unbelievable. How Victoria couldn't recognize her best friend? I don't believe a man can change so much! And that marriage ceremony ... oh, it was sooo long, I became unpatient! 3 stars.

„Scandal's bride" - a bit cliche. I read so many books about London high society of 19th century I became tired of them. Why always London and 19th century? Why not France during 100 years war for example? 3 stars.

„Beyond the kiss" - out of question the best of „Married at midnight". I just love Woodiwiss and Birminghams. 5 stars.

And at the end - romance authors, keep writting. We need your stories to warm our hearts and make our lives easier.
