One great omnibus of three of Crichton's most popular adventures, with his trademark blend of breathtaking suspense and cutting-edge technology.

Book Description

Breathtaking suspense and cutting edge technology--that's the gripping mix Michael Crichton has mastered in thriller after page-turning thriller, and these three masterpieces of suspense are no exception: Congo, Sphere, and Eaters of the Dead. From the legendary ruins of a lost city in the jungle, to the mysterious depths of the ocean floor in the South Pacific, to the historic horrors of mortal combat in the tenth century A.D.--these fabulous stories transform fears of the unknown into moments of believable adventure and unbearable suspense.

5 out of 5 stars All we need now is all his works in one.......2005-11-13

I loved Sphere and Congo. I read them when 3 years ago I was overseas in Africa when I was about 11, and was glad a picked them up. I had read previous books, such as Jurassic Park and The Lost World, as well as The Adromedia Strain. In all truth, Sphere scared me senseless, I ended up reading all of it in one night because it was too frightening to put down. Congo is another book I bought just so I could re-read it over and over. I have to say that the movie just doent do it justice, just cant capture the pure emotion of the story, the feeling of assembling the parts of the story, what has been described in your head, then having that moment when it all comes together. The spoon-fed images version does not work. I picked up Eaters of The Dead yesterday, and cant wait to start reading it after I finish Traitor General by Dan Abnett.

5 out of 5 stars Best $7.00 I've ever spent!.......2004-05-29

I bought this book in a local bookstore only because it was marked half off and I recognized the name... and I must say it was the best $7.00 I've ever spent. I started at the beginning and read all 3 books in just over 2 days. All three were great, but Sphere was my favorite. I love his writing style... his writing feels so real-life. I've since read most of his written works.

For readers who have never read anything by Crichton, this is a great place to start because of it's great value and great content. Highly recommended to anyone who likes action, suspense, and good science fiction thriller!

3 out of 5 stars Congo.......2003-10-21

I read Congo. It is a great book. It has an excelant writing technique. The storyline is terrific. It is pact with intense action filled parts. Even though it was fiction it seemed as if it could really happen. I couldn't quit reading until I was finished. When I was finished reading I wanted to go back and read the good parts over again, because they were so good. The things that I didn't like however is that it seemed to drag on from part to part and it had some swear words. The book is about a team of people that went into the Congo Jungle, to get diomonds, the whole team of people was killed in less than three minutes. In Houston they watched, and saw everybody dead. So what do they do they send in another team. This book is very adventurous during the good parts I didn't want to put it down. It was kind of scarry how everybody was killed so fast and how it might be able to really happen. The intended audience for this book would be for adults. It is not a childrens book. Because it goes into detail during some parts of the book.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to Crichton's Work.......2003-10-13

This is one of the best collections I've read in quite some time. I think it provides an affordable introduction to a wide spectrum of Crichton's work.

Highly Recommended

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Modern Romance.......2007-08-14

Dr. Sydney Hale is the head of an underground lab that gets broken into. She escapes into the mountains and encounters....JACK, marine commander/high level security, etc, on leave.

He's deer hunting with his buddies when the slaughter reaches them.

Jack keeps her alive and this book really goes. It's fast paced, easy to read and follow and suspenseful.

      I enjoyed it.

      Two very likeable characters!

2 out of 5 stars LACK OF RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE MAKES THIS NEWEST NOVEL A .......2007-05-18

In the book, she uses alot of incorrect references that even I as the layman would know, instead of referencing the CDC, or the center for disease control, she called in the CBC early on and then switchs to call it the CDC. I don;t know if that is picky but there are a lot of other inconsistencies in the book. Maybe she just needs a new editor or to actually do some research. In the beginning of the book, I did not like how she was rouchy at times and then all tender, how does the heroine go from telling the marine guard that he would like to get into her [...] to holding him in her arms while he died, kissing his lifeless forehead tenderly. I mean seriously that could have been cut because be was a minor character and the way the author described him he was a minor himself only about 20 years old. I just think it could have been handled a different way. Also the hero when he first encounters the heroine he thinks that she was responsible for the death of his friends even though he knows she did not kill them personally, his internal dialogue in the book calls her a "[...]" a couple times only to turn around and be all tender and falling in love. I didn't sell to me and was not well written.

1 out of 5 stars Basic factual errors..........2007-02-11

Like one of the other reviewers, I had a lot of trouble getting past the lack of basic research done by the author. I realize that NSA (not "the NSA") is in the news these days, but couldn't she at least have read a book or done enough research to realize that it was the wrong government agency to use for this story line? It could have been a good book with just some minimal attention to detail.

3 out of 5 stars Good Story, Needs Serious Editing.......2006-03-28

The plot of this book was good and the pacing kept things interesting. Unfortunately, whoever edited it should be fired...immediately. There are basic grammatical mistakes (militaries vs military's, for example), research errors (it's CODIS, not CODUS), melodramatic and clichéd descriptions that should have been edited out, and dialogue that should have been made a bit more realistic.

If you can get beyond all that, however, Perfect Weapon is a fun read.

      5 out of 5 stars Another winner.......2006-03-28

Another great book from Amy Fetzer. She grabs you ate the beginning and keeps you turning the pages. Could not put it down.

4 out of 5 stars Slow Start, But Worth It!.......2007-05-18

Like other reviewers, I think this is a great story. There are multiple levels to the plot--a murder mystery, a run at a basketball championship, a school project mirroring real life, a friendship tested. Even with all these elements working together, the story isn't convoluted. The start of the story, though, does drag a bit, especially compared to the fast pace of the rest of the novel. Overall a great read, though--another great one by this author!--and one that boys and girls alike would enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars This Author Deserves More Recognition.......2006-04-20

I read this book based on a student recommendation. What a welcome surprise. This author deserves much more recognition for her talent. I look at and read Young Adult books all the time, but I knew nothing of this book.

The Perfect Shot is a wonderful look at teen life and the struggles human beings go through when dealing with a loss. This book is also an experienced look at the struggles young adults go through when trying to figure out what their place is in this world.

The book does all of the above and accelerates the plot with a suspenseful ending that will leave the reader wanting to read whatever this author produces.

This book is a gem of a Young Adult book. This is a definite must-read.

I am now going to backtrack and read this author's other books, one of which is an Edgar Award winner.

I loved this book so much! I dont see how anyone couldn't. i read it for fun and it turned out to teach me a lot about love and about law. I can understand things more clearly by relating experiences to experiences of the characters. their lives are magnificently changing and understandable. i would reccomend this book to people who love teen murder mysteries and amazing pieces of writing that touch your heart. this book made me feel, it made me cry, it made me laugh. this book is about life and understanding the situation. the characters' struggles are real and exciting. this book is amazing.
I couldnt put this book down, but at some parts i had to, this story is very intense and that made it all the more lovely.

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2004-04-24

I'm not sure what the other reviewers found so compelling. I found little here other than pages and pages of lists. Some examples: 6pp. of LAPD police radio codes, 3pp. of FBI case classifications, 16pp. of org charts for the LA County Sherrif's Dept. My favorite, however, is the full page devoted to a listing of "Weapons Used by Criminals" which begins "Acid, Air gun, Ax, Bayonet, Bazooka, Billy Club..." Well, you get the idea. The portions of the book not devoted to lists tend to be laughably superficial (e.g., "Street gangs now battle over who sells the drugs and where." Really, thanks.) Granted, there are suggestions for further reading, but my advice would be to save yourself some money and do your readers a favor -- do your own research.

5 out of 5 stars Spice up your writing.......2004-01-05

I don't usually write crime novels, but when I decided to try my hand at suspence I realized just how much help I needed. I searched through many reference books and found The Crime Writers Reference Guide by Martin Roth to be a savior for me. It gives great tips on investigating, cops, the courts, illegal drugs, the prison system and crime. A handy book to have by your computer when you need to amp up a scene or two or just need to be factual. I found the investigation, crime and prison chapters to be especially helpful. Plus, at the end of each chapter is a "Where to go from here" that gives you extra resources to look up, so you don't have to stop with this book and you have the titles and authors of others to investigate. A great companion to this book is one I found by accident titled "Crime Scene" by Larry Ragle. I wrote a review on that one too, so go there and check that out.

5 out of 5 stars Individual chapters cover what a writer most needs to know.......2003-03-10

The Crime Writer's Reference Guide: 1001 Tips For Writing The Perfect Murder by Martin Roth is a detailed resource especially intended for aspiring authors of mysteries, suspense thrillers, action/adventure crime novels, true crime stories, and police procedurals novels. Individual chapters cover what a writer most needs to know in order to avoid common errors and misconceptions when writing about crime, criminals, police, courts, and prisons. A highly recommended basic primer, this edition of The Crime Writer's Reference Guide is enhanced with a new Foreword and updated information supplied by Rey Verdugo, a former police officer, a top criminal investigator, and a technical consultant for film and television projects.

5 out of 5 stars What you need to know to write a crime drama.......2003-02-04

The premise of this book appeals to every screenwriter that is ready to enter the world of crime and investigation, a book written for screenwriters regarding the world of crime. This book is the ultimate starting point for creating a believable world for thrillers, mysteries, and other related crime dramas.

Written by Martin Roth with adaptations from Sargeant Rey Verdugo, this book grabs hold of you at page 1 by offering the 10 most common mistakes writers will make regarding police work. So, Is "taking a suspect down to the precinct for questioning" an appropriate phrase to use in your screenplay?

Then, the Crime Writer Reference Book states the different types of crimes and possible motives for creating such crime. It allows you, the writer, to explore any possible scenario and making that scenario accurate.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for writers -- essential guide.......2003-01-30

As a screenwriter, there's a slew of reference guides available...but I must say this one is really a must-have. Regardless if you are writing an article, novel, non-fiction, TV or film-- if it has any reference to crime in it at all - do yourself a favor and pick up this guide. Because I do not have "Criminal/police" info readily available, this guide allows me (and my characters) to sound more credible and authentic. Another item I'd like to mention is the layout -- very easy to refer to -- lists of crimes, motives, firearms, etc. Saves me time and enhances my stories! Great book -- Highly recommend.

2 out of 5 stars Is this really a book for adults?.......2005-10-05

I didn't get more than halfway through this book because I was appalled by the writing, which is at a fifth-grade level. It's insulting to present this to a literate adult. The dialogue is hamfisted and trite, as are the characters.

I don't expect much out of a courtroom thriller, but I do expect something more challenging than an elementary school reader. This is just sad.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite good.......2005-08-01

The subject matter was interesting, the characters marginally so, but the writing style seemed a bit amateurish. Sort of like a smart tenth-grader wrote it. I have to give it a C-.

4 out of 5 stars More Depth in Plot than two previous books.......2003-12-10

The previous two books in this series were similar to Perry Mason but with more humor. This books changes the series, since the tone is considerably more serious and touches upon some issues like racism and the violence created by it.

The story is very well written and the characters are lovable as always. If this change in tone is a trend which will be followed in next books I like it. Although I also enjoy the way the previous two books were written.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT JUSTICE IS JUST ABOUT PERFECT.......2002-01-23

This is the fourth book in this series and the fourth one I have read. They all have been good and each one I read I think is better than the last one. Ben has agreed to defend a member of a white supremacy group for the murder of a Vietnamese young man. Did the man commit the crime?? He won't say he did or he didn't. Ben uses all his knowledge and people to try to prove him innocent. The whole crew is here, Ben, Christina McCall, Mike Morelli, Jones and Loving. When someone asked if Jones and Loving had a last or first name, Ben's reply was, No, they came that way. The book will hold your attention from beginning to end. Ben gets beat up and then nearly killed. The ending will really suprise you, at least it did me. The courtroom scenes are great. I think you will really like this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best Ben Kincaid epic.......2001-07-25

This is my favorite of all of the "Justice" books. You get a strong sense of the depth of the major characters, as well as a chance to explore the "wrong" side of a case Ben has chosen to defend. This book is more dedicated to exploring the grey areas between what looks like two cut-n-dried sides than most of the others. The unusual twist at the end will have you re-reading the book again looking not for clues that you missed, but character reactions and motives.

      Book Description

A rootless foster child, Julie Mathison had blossomed under the love showered upon her by her adoptive family. Now a lovely and vivacious young woman, she was a respected teacher in her small Texas town, and she passionately lived her ideals. Julie was determined to give back all the kindness she'd received; nothing and no one would ever shatter the perfect life she had fashioned.

Zachary Benedict was an actor/director whose Academy Award-winning career had been shattered when he was wrongly convicted of murdering his wife. After the tall, ruggedly handsome Zack escaped from a Texas prison, he abducted Julie and forced her to drive him to his Colorado mountain hideout. She was outraged, cautious, and unable to ignore the instincts that whispered of his innocence. He was cynical, wary, and increasingly attracted to her. Passion was about to capture them both in its fierce embrace...but the journey to trust, true commitment, and proving Zack's innocence was just beginning....

2 out of 5 stars Far from perfect from a great author.......2007-08-30

Judith McNaught is a very talented author and the only romance writer I still read. Almost Heaven, Paradise and Something Wonderful are "lifers"--books you can read again and again and keep stashed in your bedside table. I first read Perfect a long time ago and recall not really liking it. Nevertheless, I was going through a recent round of re-reading some great McNaughts, and I decided to give Perfect another try. It almost pains me to criticize McNaught, but Perfect was simply not up to snuff. As other reviewers have noted, up through the Colorado scenes, the book was fine, though still not one of my favorites. After that, it suffered a precipitous decline, ultimately ending many pages too late with a thud. Here are my four main critiques. First, all of the Hollywood references were distracting. They jarred my senses into remembering that this book is a completely unbelievable fantasy and one that looks very dated in short order. Patrick Swayze? Come on. Second, and I'm likely in the minority on this one, I dislike McNaught's use here and in other books, including the fabulous Almost Heaven, of past characters. I prefer to think of the two main characters in any given romance as really unique in the love they find. If Matt and Merideth (Paradise) and Mitch and Kate (Every Breath You Take) and Michael and Leigh (Someone to Watch Over Me) and Perfect's Zack and Julie are all friends and they all have the greatest relationship ever, than there's nothing really that special about what each of them found after all. To quote The Princess Bride, "True love doesn't happen every day," and I like my romances in print or on film to reflect that philosophy. I also like to leave to my imagination what happens with these couples after the epilogoue (a device which McNaught uses in many of her books and which I love) rather than have the couple thrust back at me as trivial secondary charaters in follow-on books. Further, doing so only emphasizes how much the "heroes" are all vaguely reminiscent of one another. Third, the book descends by the end to complete sappiness. The town carnival scenes are almost painful to read in this respect. Fourth and finally, this book needed a really good edit. All the key parts were there, but too much else was left in for it to succeed. If you haven't read Judith McNaught, do so. Just don't pick Perfect until you're a dedicated fan.

      5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-07-25

I've been a Nora Roberts fan for some time now and thought there wouldn't be author to compare. I was wrong! Perfect was recommended by a book store sales lady and I absolutely loved it. I couldn't put it down, laughed in the middle of my tears, enjoyed the depth of the romance and good sex and I can't wait to read Judith's other books.

5 out of 5 stars Why did it have to end?!?!.......2007-06-28

I bought this book at the airport when my flight was delayed. I cried and laughed out loud on the plane reading Perfect. I could have easily read it in a day, but because I never wanted it to end, I kept forcing myself to put it down. I fell in love with the characters instantly. McNaught did a wonderful job giving enough back story on the characters to really make us understand them. I loved, loved, LOVED this book. I recommend it to everyone. And I look forward to rereading it soon myself!

5 out of 5 stars This book is "PERFECT".......2007-06-07

I just bought this book and read it in 2 days. I just couldn't put it down, it was just too good. I bought a few books online at the same time, and made the mistake of reading this first, i finished it 2 days ago. Now I don't want to read the others, I feel that they are going to pale in comparison.

It made me laugh, I had to put the book down because it made me laugh so much, and my boyfriend tought I was going crazy(especially in the part where they were playing in the snow and when she was explaining why she didn't really like football). It made me cry (when he was trying to reject her, and you could feel that he was all torn up; or the whole scene in Mexico). It actually makes you go through a range of emotions: anger sadness, laughter, surprise.

I haven't read any of JM historical romances, but I think I've read all of her contemporary romances. And I have to say, that by far "Perfect" is my favorite book of hers. I read "Paradise" a few months ago, and it was my favorite until Perfect. And I was pleasantly surprised to see Matt and Meredith, I just loved them, and it was an added bonus to see a glimpse of their lives a few years later. At first I didn't really want to read it, because I didn't like the synopsis I read online (kidnapping, convicted murderer), but after seeing all the 5 stars and great reviews, I decided to give it a try.

Go out and get this book now.....You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect is an excellent title and description for this book .......2007-05-18

Just finished this book and all I can say that this book WAS "perfect". I loved it, loved it and loved it. The story line was superb, all the characters where excellent. Especially liked that Judith McNaught started this book by taking through different years in they life from childhood until they met. This was my first book from her but now I'll just go and buy more. Wonderful book

5 out of 5 stars Most helpful Prison Handbook.......2006-09-17

It's the most helpful of the handbooks [and] the first I'd seen especially for women/women activists. If only you'd been a year ahead of me into the system, your observations and insights would have helped me greatly.

With increasingly harsher penalties for nonviolent civil disobedience, more protesters of government policies will end up in prison. Activists, especially women in the U.S., should read this book.

              Product Description

Why has youth crime been increasing in the developing countries, and how well have their juvenile justice systems coped with this trend? This anthology profiles delinquency rates and juvenile justice systems in China, India, Japan, Macao, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey. Each nation's distinctive response to youth crime is described in the contexts of: a) its indigenous culture and customary law, and b) its historical encounters with external legal traditions, including common law, civil law, Islamic law, socialist law, and Asian philosophies. The authors link the growth of juvenile crime in the developing world to the emerging cultural emphases on individualism and materialism, which are viewed as byproducts of modernization. The editors' introduction also highlights commonalities and differences among the profiled juvenile justice systems, including their levels of compliance with international standards for juvenile justice.
