Loved It.......2006-11-08
I absolutely loved this book. The characters are so funny that I catch myself cracking up. I feel like I know each one of them personally. I can't wait to read God Don't Play.
Just Okay!.......2006-05-26
"God Still Don't Like Ugly" by Mary Monroe, I felt was a okay book, I didn't read the first novel God Don't Like Ugly, so this book started off really slow, it took me a week to get into this book, but once I started understanding who the characters were and what part they played in this book and the first one, then I was able follow the book, and it was okay reading...
Maybe I should have read the first novel, then this one...
Monroe, honey you are wonderful!.......2006-05-18
I liked "God Don't Like Ugly" and I also liked this sequel, "God Still Don't Like Ugly". The two books told an incredible story of endurance and forgiveness. Though this book was truly an enjoyable read, it revisits the first one too much.
In this half of the tale, Annette and Rhoda are both adults and still face their share of trials. Annette comes into contact with her long lost father and her siblings. She also finds herself a fiancee by the name of Jerome Cunningham. At first, they are happy together, but when one of his family members find out that she is a former prostitute, he calls their entire relationship off. So, she finds love in her childhood friend Pee Wee. Rhoda resurfaces and has a family of her own. But, by the end of the story, she endures a bad turn of events.
I enjoyed this book. I read it in no time. This author has a gift and it is illustrated in her writing. I really like Mary Monroe! I know Mary, God don't like ugly...
LET'S SEE...........2006-04-21
NOT AS GOOD AS THE FIRST. I WANTED TO SLAP ANNETTE A FEW TIMES. AND HER FRIEND IS STILL CRAZY. WORTH A READ IF YOU RAN OUT OF ALL YOUR DRAMA FILLED BOOKS!
Where is Book 3????.......2006-03-25
The book does start off with some flashbacks, but it does get interesting. Annette is all grown up now and ready to do things at an adult level. As an adult she address the things that she held in bondage throughout her childhood. She begins to tell those secrets she swore never to tell.
It did end the same as book one: YOU JUST WANT MORE!!

God fearing?.......2007-04-03
I am a Eurasian-American female. An African friend of mine loaned me this book with a promise that I would enjoy it. What a wonderful thought provoking book, full of the problems of growing up without guidance from anyone but God. When you are poor, you make due and make decisions that will change the rest of your life or your child's. I would never of thought to read a book by and African author not that I would not but it would never come to mind. The author of this book is extremely descriptive and you can visualize the pages as if you are there. I am in the process of reading all of her books. Thanks you
I Hated It! .......2007-01-22
This book was awful.I don't know if it was the continuous sexual abuse, Annette endured that got to me, or if it was, Mary Monroe's poor writing style.
My criticism is with how, Mary failed to give her characters depth and emotions. It was all just detached, surface reading considering she never took her readers into the character's minds. I realize this was Mary's first novel, and she acknowledged being a self-taught writer. So maybe that explains it, but either way, I hated it!
A good read.......2007-01-10
I really liked reading this book. I'm not much of a reader but this book definately kept my interest. I will definately read (God still don't like ugly).
Powerful.......2006-10-12
I enjoyed this book so much. I have seen it but I never thought it would be as good as it was. I loved the character and just purchased the sequel. I hope it is just as good as this book. If you haven't read it yet, shame on you.
How sad...........2006-07-23
Bad things happen to good people. I can attest to that. This was an excellent read. I hope Ms. Monroe allows Annette to find some peace and happiness in God Don't Play.

Title Says It All.......2007-09-25
Professor Teresa Brown's "God Don't Like Ugly" (2000, 215-page paperback) is an emergent 21st century African American woman's theology fieldbook. Originating from her black mid American (as a native Missourian) upbringing in the second half of the last century, Dr. Brown presents black "womanist" (not wife feminist) God-talk. This informative book is thoughtful and well researched with 6 pages of bibliography.
From the outset Brown is determined to refute "dominant white Americans" myths for the African American experience. She presents a womanist theology (which includes family, church, the Bible, and Jesus components) to preempt and prevent white scapegoating blacks. Early on, Rev. Brown questions white polling and research for black families which conclude that African Americans are measurably different and thus inferior. Her point, God loves African American- it is not ugly. Brown's is "a womanist hermeneutic of liberation for all people" (page 15).
Emergent womanist theology is distinctly innovative. Brown's introduction of Jesus as "cosufferer" (p. 82) calls for broad theological reflection. Of such co-suffering she says, "black churches teach that `we are saved to save others, blessed to bless others and to be a service to others'" (page 107). This theology's maturing will be exciting to watch.
Perhaps, the title of this book says it all. Brown explains that she often heard this from her grandmother (her "dominant family member") reminding "God is not pleased with negative or unattractive behavior". This book and its application herein are recommended to all.
Transmitting family values and wisdom thru the ages.......2003-09-10
Rev. Dr. Teresa Fry Brown has written an excellent historical perspective that recalls her own upbringing and affirms the role of mothers, aunties, grandmothers and othermothers in the transmission of spiritual and behavioral values. Fry Brown integrates the ways in which women have found their individual and collective 'voice' through the genre of fictional literature, poetry, and musical composition, wherein women were able to pass along values through character portrayal. The foundational guideline for many of these transmitted values is found in the faith experience of the matriarchs, then translated into standards for the family to abide by. The rich tapestry that Fry Brown weaves with threads of folklore and faith provides rich reading for a women's group, a faith community, and for scholarly reference on the womanist tradition. The strong message is to pass on what has been passed on to us... thus the book ends with models for mentoring youth and affirming community. Worthwhile!
Mother Wit Analyzed.......2001-08-18
Rev. Dr. Teresa L. Fry Brown asserts that African American grandmothers, mothers and "othermothers" are the primary transmitters of spiritual values in African American families, churches and communities. African American children first learn how to act from these mothers and mother figures.
However, prior to the sixties, these voices have been primarily muted by others who would claim to speak for the African American community. Brown analyzes African American women's liturature (poetry, gospel songs, novels, short stories, autobiographies) to document how these grandmothers and othermothers have provided a strong, spiritually-based support system for African American families.
Brown is redundant on occasion. Nevertheless, I believe that this book is a valuable resource that should be read by persons who minister to African Americans, particularly African American children.

Great Read!!!.......2007-05-17
This book was a great read. It has so many twists and turns... it's unpredictable. If you're looking for a novel with a surprise beginning, middle, and end... then this is the book for you. It's kind of sad at first, but I didn't regret reading it or spending my money on it. But be mindful that it does have a sequel... it may even be a trilogy

A courageous woman.......2007-02-01
Just finished this compelling book. It was a painful read, but in the end the resiliency of the child - now grown into a courageous woman shines through. I recommend this book to any woman who has been abused, and to anyone who cares about an abuse survivor. I also recommend it to health care professionals. It should be mandatory reading for people in the field of social services.

Challenging Ben in the courtroom is the firm's fabled top gun--not to mention a hot-headed judge with a notorious soft spot for big business. Toxic Dumping and a Serial Killer too.......2005-01-07
A twelve year old child dies from acute lymphocytic leukemia and he's not the first in the small town of Blackwood, Oklahoma. Eleven other children between the ages of eight and fifteen have recently died of the disease. Blaylock Industrial Machinery has been doing a little toxic dumpin and Attorney Ben Kincaid, champion of the underdog, is seeking justice for the victims. This is almost a suicide case for Ben as he's a sole practioner up against a well heeled, powerful law firm.
Then there is the small matter of the serial killer who appears to be targeting Blaylock employees. So you can see there is room for plenty of suspense in this book and Mr. Bernhardt does not disappoint or shrirk his writer's duties. He delivers well rounded characters, a first-rate plot and plenty of action in this gem of a story that showcases Mr. Bernhardt's great trial writing.
BERNHARDT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER.......2004-02-16
A practicing attorney in Tulsa, Bernhardt has added Silent Justice to his well received series beginning with Primary Justice. To date, this series has won him a legion of fans and garnered the Oklahoma Book Award.
With Silent Justice Bernhardt continues the story of almost-too-honest-and-courageous-to-be-true lawyer Ben Kincaid. This time, although every nerve ending urges him to back off, Ben takes on a powerful manufacturing company that has contaminated the city's water supply by dumping toxic waste. Ben's stance puts him head to head with Tulsa's most powerful law firm and his former employer, Raven, Tucker & Tubb.
A hater of civil defense "because there's nothing civil about it" Ben prepares to take on the city's legal and financial structures as well as a judge who leans toward big business. He has been moved by the plight of the middle class families whose children died dreadful deaths due to the contaminated water. "I think we're doing the right thing here. Not the smart thing," Ben declares. "Certainly not the safe thing. But the right thing."
The riveting courtroom drama is set against a string of brutal murders perpetrated by a fiend gone amok.
Bernhardt takes no chances here as he injects suspenseful subplots, which serve to propel the non-stop action. There are plenty of thrills in Silent Justice for those who like their reading spattered with blood and smattered with legalese.

A Terrific Thriller.......2003-10-11
Blaylock Industrial Machinery Corporation has to dispose of chemical waste, but they want to save money, so they bury some of their toxins in leaky drums that contaminate the groundwater. Children get leukemia, many die as did Cecily Elkins' son.
When she learns about Blaylock's illegal dumping, she contacts other parents who have lost children. They want to sue and hire Ben Kincaid to take their case even as a serial killer is torturing and killing Blaylock employees. Who is the killer? Why is killing?
This is a five star legal thriller that I couldn't put down.

JUST DIDN'T CUT IT!!!!.......2002-03-17
I have read all the series in order, this being number nine. I really liked the first ones much better. Silent Justice really has two stories at the same time. Ben has a class action suit against a big company for dumping chemicals into drinking water and therefore killing children. Meanwhile, his friend, Mike Morell is after a person who is killing people for no apparent reason. What is the killer looking for? What is the merchandise? I nearly went to sleep reading page after page of much to complicated words for my small brain understand during the trial. I really like Ben, Christina McCall, Jones, Loving and Mike. Maybe its time for me to change instead of thinking Bernhardt will go back to writing like he did earlier. It is sort of a surprise ending but I thought I would read forever to get to that part. Sorry, but the writer has done better.
Disappointing.......2002-01-05
Didn't keep my interest. Found it hard to finish. Maybe I was spoiled by recently reading some old Grisham books. This is no comparison.

Ferreralla strong as usual.......2004-09-29
Marie Ferrarella is has been a very strong writer for the Silhouette Series Romance Line. A RITA Award winner with some six-dozen and growing books for Silhouette Intimate Moments and Silhouette Special Edition. As if that is not enough laurels to rest upon, she also writes under the name Marie Nicole. She has 14 series-within-a-series, the latest is the Cavanaugh Justice. Others in the series Callie (Racing Against Time, SIM #1249) Clay (Crime and Passion, SIM#1256) Patrick (Internal Affairs, Silhouette Books) and Rayne (Dangerous Games, SIM #1274). This, the fifth in the series (Silhouette Special Edition #1613), is Teri's story. Ferrarella has a good feel for romance, but also a good feel for families, and this shows in her writing. I also compliment her Multiple POV (Point of View) writing, letter the readers know what both characters are thinking as the story progresses, instead of the rigid single POV per chapter writing we are now seeing as a fad in Yank writers. She handles Multiple POV with ease, they way a good writer should, giving the full textures and reactions of BOTH her lead characters. It's a sheer pleasure to read this style!
Teri Cavanaugh was raised with four brothers and sisters - and assorted cousins -knows noise is her element. She loves the large family chaos and confusion. However, she is saddled with a partner for the last nine months that is about to drive her up the wall with his silence. Nine months and he had barely spoken one word not necessary to see the job done. That doesn't stop Teri from using her mental crowbar, trying to pry information out of the silent but sexy black-haired, blue eyed Jack Hawkins. Her uncle paired the two together after both their partners moved to different jobs.
Jack's former partner was as silent as he, so Teri is jarring on his nerves. Worse, he is cognizant that he is working with his boss' niece. Jack is one of the best detectives going. "Male detectives wanted to be Hawk. Women flat-out wanted him." Naturally, opposites - an enforced closeness - sees their attraction flare. Both knew being lovers crossed the lines, but they could resist the passion.
There is a second story within the tale, about Andrew Cavanaugh. Fifteen years ago his wife Rose disappeared and he has never given up home of finding the only women he ever loved. Rose - now calling herself Claire - went out one day, fifteen years ago. Claire has a new life and no recollection of Rose, her husband or her children. Suddenly, she is confronted with a handsome man claiming to be her husband, and wanting her to come back home to those who love and miss her.
Ferreralla in her strong style, with great insight, using the Multi-POV, gives a rich book strong on emotions, caring and a family's love. But then, every book she creates reaches this high quality. Ferreralla, PLEASE, retain the Multi-POV of style - you are grace in prose with it!

Book Description
Vienna, 1939: "If anything happens to us, I have money in Switzerland."
These were among the last words that sixteen-year-old Renie Lang's grandfather said to her before he perished in the Holocaust. Fifty years later, Renee and thousands like her are trying to find their rightful inheritances in Swiss banks -- and the world faces appalling revelations that "neutral" Switzerland acted as secret banker to the Nazis, abetting the German war against the Jewish people.
Award-winning journalist Isabel Vincent unravels the labyrinthine story behind the headlines: how desperate men and women tried to secure their families' futures by opening bank accounts in Switzerland; how the Nazis laundered, through Swiss banks, gold seized from the treasuries of occupied countries, much of it looted from the Jews; how the demands of international business, Swiss bank secrecy, and greed have conspired to prevent the truth from being disclosed for over half a century and still prevent restitution.
Balanced, rigorous, and often heartbreaking, this major work also gives a human face to the statistics: a crusading Toronto lawyer; Edgar Bronfman, the passionate head of the World Jewish Congress; a Swiss parliamentarian determined to discover her country's past; and Renie, a survivor waiting in the shadows for some small justice, already a little too late.
Customer Reviews:
Absorbing Description Of Swiss Complicity In The Holocaust!.......2000-10-05
In this fascinating, well-researched and highly accessible book, journalist Isabel Vincent more than adequately covers the mind-boggling spectacle of the selfishness, inhumanity, and well-organized corruption of the European fellow travelers of the Nazis, who aided and abetted the progress of Germany's preparations for and later prosecution of the Second World War. Far from being the nonaligned neutral countries they claimed to be, Swiss, Portuguese, and other bankers and financers from supposedly neutral countries unscrupulously served the insidious purposes of the Third Reich by dealing with the ill-gotten goods extorted from displaced Jews, the gold bullion of the conquered countries, and the stolen art work looted from all of Europe. One finds it hard to comprehend the degree to which the Swiss in particular deliberately decided to collude with the Nazis in accepting gold in exchange for the hard currency the Germans needed to finance the war effort it began to prepare for in the 1930s.
Although the author's writing style is somewhat limited, and her approach to relating critical historical events seems a bit trivial and oversimplified, the story she tells distracts one from such minor drawbacks to the book. I also found myself wondering how much of an earnest research effort the author made, as she has a tendency to quote a few authors extensively, and attributes all the quotes from each of them to a single book, such as "Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich". She also tends to repeat herself unnecessarily, and uses one particular quote from one of the protagonists on the book cover, again in the narrative a few times, and then yet again in a newspaper clipping used as part of the photo section describing Holocaust survivor Renee Lang. Yet all this seems more the result of limited experience and poor editing than anything else. Again, given the riveting story she has to tell, using first person recollection, one finds a great deal of well organized information here regarding the cupidity and deviousness of the Swiss in giving dissembling and dishonest answers for decades about the stolen treasures and life savings of so many displaced and murdered Jews still stored in Swiss bank vaults. The sad story of how and why the Swiss were allowed to get away with one of the most profitable crimes of the century makes for sad but still fascinating reading.
This book is much like another more recent book, "Pack Of Thieves", by Richard Chesnoff (see my review) in its painstaking description of the varieties of humiliations, dispossessions, and barbarisms perpetrated against European Jews, gypsies and other non-Aryans by the Nazis during their twelve-year reign of terror. To Ms. Vincent's considerable credit, her story is personalized by the use of a single family to tell the tale; and this device helps to bring the unbelievably horrific nature of the persecution of the Jews into bold relief. This is a book that tells a cautionary and still topical true story well, and is one that reminds us that human beings are capable of almost anything, from the wonderful acts of personal courage she often describes and attributes to specific named individuals based both on personal recollections and eye-witness accounts as well as a number of interviews with Holocaust survivors who were kind enough to share their stories with her. I recommend this book for anyone interested in the detailed history of how Swiss, Portuguese, and other bankers avoided repatriation of billions of dollars worth of money, gold bullion, and art treasures stolen from displaced and murdered Jews during the Holocaust.
The BEST book on the subject of Nazi gold and Swiss banks........1998-10-18
Isabel Vincent masterfully relates, in an objective and balanced manner, the gripping story of the Hammersfeld family and their quest to recover property stolen by the nazis and their inheritance deposited in Swiss banks by their grandfather, a wealthy Austrian merchant. The story revolves around their fight for justice, aided by a young crusading lawyer, amidst a flurry of world events that brought attention to the revision of Switzerland's conduct during WWII , and a thorogh examination of the myths of Swiss neutrality and banking secrecy. Vincent's account is balanced and fair, and she is careful not to blame Switzerland for all the evils of the war, while at the same time, scrutinizes the scandalous conduct of the banks towards Holocaust surivors and account heirs over a period of 50 years following the end of the war. Vincent also gives an insightful account of the political mileage sought by politicians and organizations dealing with this issue. Vincent's book is the winner of the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem prize, and has been widely acclaimed by the press in France, Germany, adn Switzerland itself, as a result of its carefully researched and balanced account of the events.

Jesus' Silent Years: Exploring Facts the Gospels Do Not Tell.......2004-06-17
This book explores the life styles and political undercurrents of the years between Jesus birth and his ministry. It includes information on what boys of Jesus age would have done at the time he was alive, their relationship to their family, and the expectations of the adults in their lives. It also describes the cities and government leaders and other intersting information. Dr. Justus also debunks several false stories that were spread about Jesus younger years. I read the book from cover to cover hardly putting it down. It was a truly enjoyable experience. Right now my copy of the book is sitting in Sevier County Public Library advertising a book signing. As soon as I get it back, I will read it again.

Great book!.......2005-01-01
Not many people get to set foot in an underwater sub submerged in the dark deep open waters of the dangerous cold ocean. Justice Hawk gives us this experience without even setting foot in a nuclear tin can. But you can only come to appreciate the men and woman that silently protect us in these shadow hunters of the wet chill of the sea.
Another amazing book by Justice Hawk.......2004-11-22
This Author is so different and refreshing, I've enjoyed all his books so far including this one. I hope he continues to write such interesting novels. The life of a submariner, on a nuclear submarine, not something I have really ever thought about, and I doubt that many other people have either. What these brave men endure for our safety is amazing. Submerged in cramped spaces for months at a time, with no fresh air, silent, alone in the depths of the ocean. Yet with the capability at a moments notice to destroy the world. This really was a voyage 20,000 leagues under the sea, but in the real world.
Silent - a great read!.......2004-10-19
"Silent" by Justice Hawk captures the life of American submariners and their lives in a very special way. It gives you valuable insight as to what they do and how critical and vital their mission is to the United States of America. As someone who has been involved in the United States submarine program for over 38 years, I can tell you that it captures the essence of the "Silent Service" and truly exemplifies what a very unique branch of the Navy that submarines are and how it all works to be a vital cog in the "wheel of defense" of this country. A very interesting read. I couldn't put it down once I started on it. Very fast paced, loaded with a lot of very interesting facts and experiences from the first hand perspective of the author. I heartily recommend it!

HIGHLY INSIGHTFUL.......2002-02-10
I found Silent Justice to be well researched, well written and enlightening. The book has several dimensions. While illuminating a national problem in our school systems, the book also probes the human predicament - that we all have flaws. The real "Silent Justice" that runs through every page of Scottie's book is that everyone is their own punishment!
Silent Justice.......2002-01-31
This topic is a sensitive subject but one that needed to be told. It was well researched and sensitively approached. It is both inspiring and fact-filled. I would recommend it to teachers, youth leaders and anyone who cares about kids.
A fascinating read........2002-01-31
A very exciting story of small town politics and a young girl's inexperience with the world. From the moment I started reading I was engrossed with the developement of the characters and the plight for justice that the unfortunate girl was seeking. A wonderfully written book that I could not stop reading.
Where's the truth.......2001-01-24
I see Scotie is up to her old tricks of writting again. As in her first book the Cheater she did not check out her facts, there is more to writting a good book than just reading the trial transcripst and the news articles. Scottie did you interview the "family members" I would say not, just like you didn't do in the Cheater. I incourge all serioues readers to not buy this womans books, anyone can read news clippings and write a so called book. I can't beleve someone would publish this.

Dull, but Informative.......2002-12-22
John Greenya sets out to write a biography of Justice Thomas without making a judgement one way or the other. He pretty much manages to do that, however the story seems to lack any emotion at all.
This is an almost impossible task as the early life of Justice Thomas is alive with passion. The hearings against him alive with the same and the voice of his detractors and his defenders alike brim with this emotion.
Greenya doesn't seem to want to make a decision. He lets the participants and the record do most of the talking. His final chapter allows people involved and uninvolved make their cases however he refuses to draw any conclusions. This might be a desision made in order to be fair (and for the most part he shows respect for both sides of the story) but it makes for a less interesting book.
The story of Thomas' early life and the story of the Hearings went fast and read well, they had what most of the book lacked, but that was due to the drama inherant in the facts, not the writers writing.
I would suggest reading this volume first before reading the acolates of the right or the birckbats of the left, in that sense it is a useful book.
This book may deserve a better rating than I gave it. Greenya is not trying to be Bernard Cornwell but I find I just can't do better than what I have.
Very Disappointing.......2002-06-30
I decided to read this book after coming across Mr. Greenya giving an informal talk about his book on C-Span in Spring 2002. Listening to Mr. Greenya talk, although he was a rather dull and unorganized speaker, I had hope that his book would be as neutral a biography as possible. Mr. Greenya was very open in acknowledging that the Right and Left are very passionate when it comes to Clarence Thomas and that there is rarely any middle. This is true, but Mr. Greenya made it seem that he may be one of the rare few capable of standing in that middle ground. Sadly, he's not.
The book opens on the very first page with the view of Thomas's confirmation hearings through the perspective of the porn-store owner that alleges to have sold videos to Judge Thomas. Greenya writes that this owner was "excited" that one of "his customers" was being nominated to the Supreme Court. Yeah... I bet.
After that wonderful introduction, the book truly begins with Thomas's impoverished childhood in Pin Point, Georgia. Mr. Greenya moves quickly through this time period, as well as most of Thomas's young adult and college days. The majority of the 300-page book is taken up by quotes and opinions on Thomas, mostly concerning the Anita Hill ordeal and Thomas's rulings as a Supreme Court Justice. In these cases, the quotes opposing Thomas are without fail longer and preceding the quotes from the far fewer sources Mr. Greenya uses who are on Thomas's side. Mr. Greenya even goes so far as to uncritically reference the words of people such as Nan Aron and Eliot Minceberg of People for the American Way, an ultra-Left lobbyist group.
Mr. Greenya does not seem like a vindictive or vitriolic man, like many (not all, of course) of the people who attack Clarence Thomas for anything he does. But he is clearly slanted to a certain political side not in agreement with Clarence Thomas's views. In prefacing the lengthy passage he uses from Sarah Weddington, the lawyer who successfully argued the Roe v. Wade case, Mr. Greenya characterizes her as "a fierce protector of the right she worked so hard to win for all American women..." Political opinions aside, it is simple fact that there are tens of millions of American women who do not consider legalized abortion to be any "right" that human beings have, no matter what the law says... rather, they consider it morally appalling. In this simplistic statement Mr. Greenya gives away his political persuasion more than he does at any other point in this book. His explanation of what it means to "bork" a judge is also astoundingly false, according to the widely held understanding of the word, even as defined by Microsoft's Encarta dictionary, for one. Mr. Greenya almost seems to be painfully twisting things to meet an agenda at times.
I give the book 2 stars because Clarence Thomas rejected several requests, rightfully so, by Mr. Greenya to be interviewed for this book. I'm sure Judge Thomas's friends and fellow conservatives also knew what to expect and turned down Mr. Greenya as well, which had to be a major factor, beyond his control, in Mr. Greenya's lack of qualified, pro-Thomas sources throughout the book. But the slant and the errors are simply inexcusable in a purportedly neutral book, and accompanied with a boring narrative, this makes for one of the worst "biographies" I have ever read.
Silent Justice by John Greenya.......2002-05-02
Silent Justice is a fascinating account of the personal and political development of a man who now holds one of the most influential positions in our nation, a man about whom people have very strong feelings ranging from admiration and respect to outright disdain. Although I personally disagree with Justice Thomas's positions on many issues, a friend recommended this book because of its keen perceptions of the character of a man who has the potential to influence all of our lives for years to come. As it turned out, I enjoyed the book immensely.
Silent Justice is an unusually unbiased account compared with much that has been written about Thomas. Although the book allowed me to draw my own conclusions, I found John Greenya's treatment of the ways in which Thomas's opinions and style changed from his college days and throughout his years at the Equal Employment Opportunities commission and on the Federal bench to be particularly interesting. In addition, the description of Thomas's early life and the culture he grew up in provides a necessary backdrop for understanding his later life. The skillful blending of Thomas's professional and personal struggles, as well as the author's insights into the special challenges inherent in being a black man functioning at the upper levels of society and government is part of what makes this book so interesting.
I would definitely recommend Silent Justice to anyone who wants to understand what makes Thomas tick or who wants a greater perspective on the various ways people achieve power and prestige in American government and society.
Give Justice Thomas A Chance -- and This Book As Well.......2002-01-22
In the foreword to his book, Washington writer John Greenya wryly recounts the disdain with which friends and other persons greeted the news that he was writing a biography of Justice Clarence Thomas. Much of this disgust came from political liberals, who already knew what they wished to know about Justice Thomas, and who cared naught about anything else. 'Tis a a pity, that closed minds are so prevalent in modern political Washington. In reality, Justice Thomas' story is an up-from-the-muck saga of a kid from rural Georgia who grew up speaking an Island dialect -- unsureness of speech is the chief reason he seldom asks questions during SCOTUS sessions -- and went through Yale, perhaps America's toughest law school. The value of Greenya's book is that he reports, rather than lectures, and one comes away from Silent Justice with a better understanding of a man condemned to carry into history the qualifier "the controversial Justice Thomas." Steve Weinberg, who reviewed Silent Justice for The Legal Times, concluded, "For potential readers who have already decided beyond all doubt that Thomas is either a hero or a villain, this book will be maddening. for potential readers who have strong opinions about Thomas but are willing to revise those opinions on the basis of new evidence, this book will be revalatory." Amen
