Product Description

Most of the glitter that was once gold on Long Island is gone, but some still remains hidden. During the late 1800's through the early 1900's, Long Island was the backdrop for architecural extravagances and reckless spending for luxuries that were characteristic of the period referred to the "Gilded Age" or the "Age of Elegance". This book is for the curious, that want to read about a Long Island lifestyle that no longer exists. This book will answer questions like... What Long Island mansion is the second largest home built in America? Which Long Island millionaire was sued by merchants to pay for his wife's shopping bills? Where Hecksher Park got it's name? Why there are two lines of pine trees down the median of the Southern State Parkway near Belmont State Park? Why is there a two-mile bend in the Northern State Parkway? What estate hosted performances by Tyrone Powers, John Phillips Sousa as well as Ethel Barrymore at it's outdoor amphitheater? Which estate was the setting for the highly publicized custody battle of Gloria Vanderbit? Which mansion was used for the head in the bed scene from ''The Godfather'' movie? Which estate has the oldest wrought iron entrance gates in America? Which mansion was the inspiration for the book ''Great Gatsby''? Which estate has the original eagles from the first Grand Central Station in Manhattan? Which mansion took two demolition companies to knock down? Which Long Island resident coerced her seventeen-year old daughter to marry royalty? Which estate did Robert Moses acquire for a parkway extension and bridge to Connecticut? Which two estates occupied the town of Lattingtown?

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book on a topic long overdue for serious study........1998-12-10

This book covers the production of fine jewelry in the Newark, NJ area. A good variety of pieces are beautifully photographed. More importantly, the various US makers are indentified and discussed. A work of this type is essential before all record is lost of the unique contribution of these very fine and, until now, overlooked jewelers. The book is a revelation. Highly recommended. There is alot more to American jewelry than Tiffany's. Explore this unique heritage most of us didn't even know we had.

4 out of 5 stars A Peek Into The Past.......2006-08-02

I had just recently had the pleasure of visiting Blenheim Palace and I remember our tour guide talking about the beautiful American Duchess Consuelo Vanderbilt Balsan and how she had written a book about her life. After viewing that lovely portrait found on the front cover of her book I just had to find out more about this woman. While reading the book I found that she was a courageous and talented woman who had the rare chance of being part of the British upper class. It is an interesting life that this woman lead being forced into a marriage that she did not want to be in, having to live with a man who was worlds apart from her and having to wait so long to marry her true love.

Despite all of this she does not let this stop her from helping the poor especially women, and fighting for women's rights. She also is in France during the start of World War II and throughout her life meets some amazing people especially one person most people will know Winston Churchill. It also will give readers a peek into the late Victorian era and into the lifestyles of the wealthy.

Keeping in mind that this is an autobiography this book can be tedious at times. She mentions a slew of names that most readers will not know and she seems to keep the reader at arm's length and does not go into deep details of her personal life. I believe this is due to the time period in which she lived where people did not share great personal feelings to strangers.

I think this is not a book for all but those who have visited Blenheim or have an interest in the upper class of this time period will find the book to be interesting and will have fun researching all the famous people she mentions. I enjoyed this book and it made my visit to Blenheim wonderful.

3 out of 5 stars Churchill was older than Consuelo.......2006-05-31

Another reviewer said that Churchill was born at Blenheim during one of the weekend functions she was forced to host. Churchill was older than Consuelo by a few years, so this isn't true, although it is true he was born at Blenheim. That reviewer also describes her as extremely well educated, which I also take issue with. She was educated until the age of 17 by private tutors or in small group settings. More was apparently spent on her education than the average Aristocratic woman in England, but it is a stretch to call someone who had not even attained a bachelor's degree extremely well educated. I know college education was rare for women at the turn of the century, but it wasn't unheard of even before her birth.

What this book really does is give us Americans a clue about the social hierarchy in England and other European nations. I simply didn't understand how ingrained this culture was until reading this book. I think I understand it now for the first time at a gut level. For instance, she describes an embarrassing situation early in her career as Duchess where she failed to leave the table in the correct order of precedence. Then she was introduced to a book that gave her the numbered ranking of the aristocrats (including her own) so she would know what order to follow. Amazing. I had no idea one's social rank was so constantly at issue and thrown in your face. I just thought there were general levels and everyone on one level was more or less equal. Not so according to this book.

So, don't read this for juicy gossip as the other reviewer's comments are correct about that. Read it to understand how the class structure worked in Europe at this time, and you will be pleased. If you aren't interested in that, I wouldn't bother.

Oh yes, I believe she did have a ghost writer on this book. Some people have posted that she wrote it herself. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure I read somewhere that she had a ghostwriter.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2004-07-02

This book is so much fun. If you're interested in the history of the upper class in the US or England, it is well worth checking this book out. Parts of it are laugh-out-loud funny, such as the description of dinner with the Duke; others are edge-of-your-seat exciting, such has her escape from the oncoming Germans in WWI; and others are just poignant, such as some of the anecdotes from her childhood. Like other reviewers, I do wish she had given more detail. She is a classy lady, though, and only kisses and tells about those she thinks really deserve it (mainly her first husband). Less fun for the reader, but there's still enough juicy gossip to keep me interested.

It is inexpertly written, but I think this ads to the book's charm. Mrs. Balsan obviously wrote it herself instead of taking the modern route and finding a ghost-writer.

If you enjoy this book, check out "To Marry and English Lord," which expands on Consuelo's story by talking about many other young hieresses of the time who married abroad.

      Book Description

How should Tolkien's literary work be interpreted? Greg Wright, a life-long Tolkien scholar, in applying Biblical principles to Tolkien's fantasy, shows some surprising revelations about Tolkien's work that every Tolkien fan should read.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars chatty and churchy.......2007-07-16

Without a doubt, there are Christian resonances in Tolkien that are worth discussing, but Wright's methodology is rather heavy-handed. Wright does his best to impose an evangelical perspective on Tolkien with an emphasis on dogma rather than a sensitive reading of Tolkien. Moreover, Wright's conversational style would work well in a talk, but becomes irritating in a book. No index.

      5 out of 5 stars A Genuinely New Perspective.......2004-03-22

If you want a quick, easy read that skims over Tolkien's works and then pops them into a convenient, lightweight package, do NOT read this book. On the other hand, if you are looking for a thoughtful examination of various aspects of Tolkien's body of work and an insightful exploration of how Tolkien's corpus could create the impact that it has had on our culture, then this is a book you MUST read.

One of the joys of this book is the author's commitment to maintaining a dialogue with his readers. Although an outgoing Christian himself, he never "preaches at" his reader. Rather, his approach is that of the website where his series on LOTR and Peter Jackson's films have been posted on for the last five years: "One of the practices at Hollywood Jesus is never to throw rocks at any artist or their work. Rather, we approach each work on its own terms, find common ground and open the doors of dialogue."

Here is an author who has written not to convince you that he is right, but to present some new ideas in order to stimulate your own thinking about Tolkien's thoughts and intentions. This is an author who is genuinely interested in feedback and discussion, who can sincerely and dispassionately dialogue with his readers, who wants more to provoke thought and discovery than just to prove a point.

If you want to know more about the text of the book, read the review posted below by "la solinas," but rest assured, no matter what you think of this book, you can take the opportunity to discuss it all further with the author himself. Don't miss it!

4 out of 5 stars Evangelical analysis of Tolkien.......2003-12-11

Greg Wright's book is an evangelical analysis of the Tolkien myth. I would recommend it to evangelicals who misunderstand the Christian basis of Tolkien's myth, or who wish to explain to one's stricter relatives why Tolkien is a good Christian.

I enjoyed Wright's analysis. He goes into detail into the general ideas behind the LOTR myth, analyzing the secular and Catholic roots of the story. (His explanation of Catholic Christianity's use of allegory is excellent).

However, there is quite a bit in the book about the spiritual helps and spiritual dangers of Tolkienmania, with an emphasis on a strict biblical world view.

If one is allergic to bible quoting, skip the book. If one wishes to see an analysis of Tolkien's tales from several religious/ethical worldviews, it is an excellent study. And, if one is a strict evangelical, it is a welcome addition to your library.

4 out of 5 stars Wright's corn worth its weight in gold.......2003-10-19

Greg Wright offers a perspective on Tolkien we don't often hear about these days, arguing that The Lord of the Rings is fundamentally pre-Christian in chronology and content. His book thus comes as a refreshing alternative to defensive Christian interpretations like Bradley Birzer's "JRR Tolkien's Sanctifying Myth" and Ralph Wood's "Gospel According to Tolkien".

Readers should be aware, however, that Wright has an aggressive evangelical agenda. The subtitle, "sifting the gold from the glitter", hints at the angle he's coming from. He warns that pagan elements in Tolkien's story need to be recognized for what they are -- glitter not gold, chaff instead of corn. Needless to say, one person's gold is another's glitter, and in truth we should recognize both pagan and Christian elements as part of the "gold" of Tolkien's classic.

Wright is correct, however, to point out that Tolkien thought he had chaff in his own corn, even if we as readers are not inclined to recognize it as such. From a Christian point of view, there is too much "long defeat" in Middle-Earth, and never enough confident victory. The Fourth Age grows even darker than the previous cycles, and men have to confront evil without help from wizards and cheerfully courageous hobbits. As the apocryphal dialogue between Finrod and Andreth indicates, the race of men remains hopeless without the Christ event. But the flip-side to Wright's observation is equally important: Tolkien couldn't do without this chaff, and he even liked its taste. He loved and emulated pagan themes like hopeless courage, even if as a Christian he couldn't quite "go there".

The best parts of the book are the last two chapters which focus on the Fourth Age and alternate Catholic ways of viewing Tolkien's work. Wright is sensitive to Catholic doctrine (rare for an evangelical) and has done his homework. He cites Regina Doman's excellent contrast between the Protestant and Catholic views of history, the latter of which puts The Lord of the Rings into perspective as an historical episode consistent with Christian salvation-history. The heroes of this story are "faithful" to the extent that Eru has revealed himself to them. But ultimately the pagan world-view is operative in Middle-Earth, and Frodo was doomed to failure.

Wright and I come to similar conclusions for very different reasons, but the important thing is that he understands Tolkien's story for what it is: pre-Christian myth as opposed to Christian metaphor. For those who can wade through the evangelical chaff, Wright's corn is worth its weight in gold.

      5 out of 5 stars Very Insightful.......2003-10-16

This book was very helpful to me. I am not a 'Middle Earth' freek, but I wanted to know more about Tolkien's work, especially in view of the attention it is getting in the movies. As a Christian, this book gave me the insights I needed. Greg's style of writing is easy to read. His candid observations are a big help to any Christian who wants to further understand how to interpret Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. And, if you are in Christian leadership, this book is a must for you to read. Thanks Greg...a BIG help!

4 out of 5 stars They'd Been Married Under False Pretenses. Not It Was Time To Set Matters To Right........2005-09-02

Fanny and her groom had been tricked! Both sets of impoverished parents had decided to recoup their families' losses by marrying their offspring to the progeny of a "rich" neighbor. The truth, however, was that neither family had a penny to its name.

Charles was not the dark rogue of Fanny's girlish fantasies, but he was chivalrously determined that she should meet someone more appropriate than he. And for her part, Fanny wanted Charles to find the woman of means who would be the snwer to his prayers. Yet as each one set out to find someone for the other, both were left with the strangest sensation - that quite possibly, true love might have nothing to do with riches...

4 out of 5 stars A more realistic approach to her plot, a welcome change.......1998-05-28

Fanny and Sir Charles were ticked in to a marriage that neither wanted by their parents. Each believed the other was wealthy and when the truth came out it was in their best interest to pretend they were single and rich to gain a "better" partner.

Surprisingly the main charachters are not as childish as Chesney's other series. Sir Charles doesn't sulk as much as her other heros and Fanny is not a simpering watering pot who lost her head only to be rescued by her husband.

I wished Chesney does more work in this strain, it's more entertaining than her series and eventhough it's still predictable, it makes the journey reading through it, a little more enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Golden nuggets of poetry.......2005-05-09

Gold and Glitter is a collection of forty-one poems about life, nature, relationships and even Albert Einstein.

Geared towards young adults, some of the poems are rather simplistic, but also funny, as in the case of "Hungry Woman", "Jump and Thump" and "Run, Run, Run"

However, it is in the poems about life that Ms. Monnar shows her strengths, especially the ones dealing with relationships and personal experiences. "Inconsolably Crying" for example, is a moving poem about the loss of a close friend.

Many of the others deal with topics familiar to young adults, examples being "Communication", "Clutter", and "World of the Living", the last of which advises against taking people for granted.

Also of note are the ones dealing with social situations such as "Loosen Up", about a harried clerk, and "Humble Heart" which deals with being kind to the less fortunate.

At a first glance, the opening poems, one of which is an acrostic poem, (something I learned from the helpful glossary at the back of the book), seem rather shallow, but the best ones lie within.

A collection of poems dealing with a wide cross section of topics, all geared towards young people.

Gold & Glitter also speaks the truth about the more serious aspects of life: Had I Known and The Right Road are example and some of my favorites. All in all it is a wonderful page turning book.

        Book Description

The night is filled with mystery, danger . . . and romance. Here is the last Night Tales book, reissued for the first time, plus a bonus classic tale of passion and peril by the incomparable mistress of romantic suspense, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts

Night Shield -- She was too much of a cop not to be suspicious of a shady character like Jonah Blackhawk . . . and too much of a woman not to be drawn into him. So working undercover in Jonah's club was getting extremely complicated. For despite Allison Fletcher's determined distrust, the smooth-talking tough guy was getting under her skin, and that was too close for comfort.

Night Moves -- Some people had skeletons in their closets; Maggie Fitzgerald had one in her yard. She'd retreated from her fast-paced life, seeking peace and solitude. And if surly landscaper Cliff Delaney's rude manner and irresistible sexuality weren't disturbing enough, now an old murder shattered her peace entirely, imperiling her life and forcing her right into the protective arms of the most irritating man alive.

1 out of 5 stars Night Shield Night Moves.......2006-07-20

I resent that the author used this platform to air her political views. I read for entertainment to get away from all that. I am currently reading another of Ms. Roberts' books and she has done the same thing. No more, Nora!

3 out of 5 stars One half great, one half not so great........2006-07-19

I absolutely loved "Night Shield" in this book, but "Night Moves" did not live to author's standard's. It felt like the story was hurried up to the publisher just to put something in the book to fill up pages. The characters were not as developed as in Nora Roberts' other books, and the plot was not as interesting. Every author has a "not so great" story once and a while, I guess, this one is in that category.

5 out of 5 stars Nora Robert re-release.......2005-09-29

This author has never disappointed me. Love her books and enjoy going back and re-reading them years after the fact. Definite keepers. Need to build a bookcase just for her books. As JD Robb she is unsurpassed. Always entertains-always enjoyable-always raises thoughts and ideas of current and past life choices. Long after the books is over the characters and stories stay with you.

4 out of 5 stars Entertained if not overly impressed.......2005-09-26

I decided to give these two short stories four stars because, while I wasn't rocked by them, I knew I was probably getting two reasonably good stories in which to pass the time with, which I did. It had been a while since I'd read any Nora Roberts books. I usually stick to her trilogies, feeling like those usually deliver more of what I've come to expext from her.

The first story, Night Shield, is about Detective Allison Fletcher and former bad boy Jonah Blackhawk. Allison comes from a family dedicated to upholding the law, while Jonah has had a past steeped in breaking it. Both are distrustful of one another even though they must work together to catch thieves that have been targeting customers at Jonah's clubs. Neither wants to give into the obvious attraction that sparks between them, but are helpless to avoid it. I have to admit that Jonah drove me crazy in this story at times. He had the biggest trust issue of the two, and I just wanted to hit him at times. Maybe this is good thing? Possibly, if it makes the reader feel something for the characters, no if it just makes you want to turn the pages to get to something better.

Night Moves was by far the better story. It deals with many stereotypes we encounter in everyday life: Celebrity impressions, small town prejudices, general assumptions about people that usually just don't hold true in real light. Maggie Fitzgerald is a grammy award winning movie score composer that has had it with the high-flying intense action of Hollywood. She's ready for a change and buys an old home and some land in a small rural community, far removed from the hustle and bustle of her busy life...or so she hopes. What she doesn't plan for is Cliff Delaney, landscaper extraordinaire, the feelings he stirs in her, or what he finds in her front yard. I wanted to ring Cliff a new one a few times for not wanting to give Maggie a chance to prove herself. Most of the time he just assumes she is a spoiled rich girl, but he comes around by the end. Maggie turns out to be more than he bargained for and is more than able to prove herself to him. This story makes you stop and think about how we tend to judge people without truly knowing them first.

Overall, a great book to curl up with on a quiet night. My only complaint is that I wish Roberts had fleshed out her characters a little more. It seems to me that she tends to create characters that are too "tidy". Yes, they get angry, yes, they feel passion, but it all seems like it's contained in a nice neat box. When Roberts describes their feelings, it's as if there is a line that's never crossed. I wish she would let her characters cross that line more often.
