3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-03-15

This forey into military sci-fi may be in the tradition of Heinlein, but it does not satisfy as well. The universe of the story is quite well done and well thought out, down to the stagnation and issues such a society would face. But it comes off as preachy in many places, lacking the "ah-ha" other military sci-fi social commentaries get to.

For all that actually happens during the book, it seems very slow paced a read. I don't regret reading it, but I don't think I'll be going back for more.

2 out of 5 stars Nice, but could have been better without.............2006-11-27

For the most part I enjoyed the book, except that I would say at 805 pages, I wished it was about 200 pages lighter. There were just some side stories that didn't help out with the main plot, and dragged things down.

Another pet peeve of mine is when authors feel the need to give the details of sex scenes. I have no problem with characters having sex, I just don't want to know the details. I know there were only 3-4 sex scenes, but I don't think the details are ever needed. Why can't SF be SF...if I want erotica, I could make that choice.

4 out of 5 stars Space Opera at it.......2006-06-14

Wow did I ever enjoy this book. When I was finished I was genuinely sad.
Mr. Hamilton has displayed some real strength as a novelist in the writing of this story. He manages to keep the subplots interesting and engaging enough that he doesn't need many to keep the pace of the book moving and the readers interest piqued, he is very descriptive of his settings without becoming tired and slowing everything down.
The characters are well drawn and very familiar, enough so that the secondary characters moving through the background still have enough life to avoid being one dimensional cutouts, there for the scenery or to fetch a coffee if one is needed.
He manages in pure SF manner to insert dialogues on several controversial and bitterly argued topics today, censorship, the freedom of knowledge, the right to life vs euthanasia, the currently developing corporate uni-culture vs individual freedoms and self sufficiency.
I must admit there were two where two or three instances where the mechanics used to keep the story moving were out of step and not as smoothly written out. I found because the rest of the story was so well done these instances were very obvious. Case in point being the scenario with the father when Lawrence becomes aware of shall we say the method of payment. Sorry for the obscurity, trying to avoid spoilers.
I also liked the fact that while many SF novels paint a doom and gloom version of the future state of the universe and the place Earth inhabits within it, many of the current problems have been resolved and man is striding into the vastness of the Universe facing different problems, rather than the same old same old. The problems that have to be dealt with in the future are things like the cost of spaceflight which is not something often addressed in novels. Asset realization is a concept to address the cost of colonization and you have to wonder a little if these ideas are not far off the mark. Human beings being what they are.
All in all a great read, time and effort well invested.

4 out of 5 stars A Solid Tale.......2006-04-14

Fallen Dragon is a solid, entertaining sci-fi story. The world is rich and unique and the characters have depth. The technology described is novel and believable. The book is overly long and contains a couple of gratuitous sex scenes not appropriate for younger readers but overall it is a good read. Those who enjoy military and technical sci-fi will enjoy Fallen Dragon.

3 out of 5 stars Decent but a Little too Surreal.......2005-11-20

All in all, the book is a decent read. However, when you think about the plot and the technology as a whole, it doesn't make a lot of sense. For example, if the true goal of the "resistance movement" was to transport the "Dragon" to Aldeberan, and the resitance had the use of "Prime," there must have been a million better ways to do it than to start by killing some "Skins."

Also, the end is sort of an over-the-top deus ex machina that doesn't flow very well from the earlier parts of the book.

At the same time, it's a pretty good read.

5 out of 5 stars Well, I am a fan of Weiss & Hickmann so..........2007-07-08

Great books. I have to admit that vol. 2 was a bit slow and dull at first but vol. 1 and 3 and most of vol. 2 made up for this. Didn't much care for the lovestory between Silvanoshei and the dark knight Mina so all this about Silanosheis love that wasn't returned is a bit dull for me (yes yes, I am a guy). But all in all I would rate this as a 5 star product. Another great story from Weiss & Hickmann.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Weis and Hickman's previous novels.......2007-06-05

First let me start off by saying that I did enjoy these books. But I enjoyed the previous books more. The Chronicles Trilogy was the first set in the Dragonlance world and I must say the best. It all sort of went downhill from there, albeit a long hill with a small angle but still downhill. I really thought that with The Second Generation and Dragons of Summer Flame that led up to The War of Souls Trilogy, that there would be a "rebirth" (if you will) of the Dragonlance Series. But sadly that wasn't to be. An IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE: I have been led to believe that the writers, Weis and Hickman, actually have very little creative control over the Dragonlance Series. I believe that these books are meant to be companions to the world of D & D. I enjoy reading not throwing dice to see how much damage I do. As such, maybe they threw dice to see how the storyline would unfold. I don't know.

The Good:
The story is great. The action is great. Tas the loveable and unlikely hero is back. There is a lot of action and intrigue to keep you interested. The whole trilogy is one big twist after another.

The Bad:
I'm afraid there may be more bad than good...but only just. The number one problem, and it is SERIOUSLY BAD, is the typos. Did anyone actually proofread this book? I mean seriously it is bad. By the middle of Dragons of a Lost Star (second book in the trilogy), I was almost ready to call it quits just because it was so hard to make any sense of it. Misspelled words...bad punctuation...missing words...extra words. Just really, really, really bad. They need to fire whoever edited this book.

Now about the problems with the stories themselves. POTENTIAL SPOILER

My best advise to the readers about these books and this goes for pretty much ALL of the Dragonlance novels: Don't get attached to ANY character because they ALL die. The writers spend 3 books building a character and getting them developed then kill them. Why would you do that? Take a lesson from R.A. Salvatore or Terry Goodkind and keep your main characters ALIVE. It's what keeps readers coming back for more. If Salvatore had killed Drizzt after his first trilogy, Salvatore's career as a writer would have been a lot less eventful. Same goes for Goodkind's Richard in the Sword of Truth books.
Let's see who has died along the way to The War of Souls. Keep in mind these are MAJOR CHARACTERS!
Sturm Brightblade, Tanis Half-Elven, Caramon Majere, Raistin Majere, Tika Majere, Alhana Starbreeze, Crysania, Goldmoon, Laurana, Palin Majere, Riverwind, Steel Brightblade, Tanin Majere, Kitiara Uth Matar (who needed more development), Berem the Everman (death was justified), Flint Fireforge, Tas Burfoot (dead but brought back) and I'm sure there were others but I think you get the picture. And again these were major characters. Why even bother developing them if they are so expendable? Heck, I wouldn't even bother being creative with the names. Maybe I can write a Dragonlance novel. "Here is Sam. Sam is an elf. Sam has to overcome insurmountable odds to save the world. Sam overcame the insurmountable odds and saved the world. Now Sam is dead." There, I just wrote a whole Dragonlance novel in five sentences.
What was the point of "The Second Generation" and "Dragons of Summer Flame"? They introduce new characters and then killed them all. Stupid.

Summary of my review:
These books have a great story, great plot, and great characters who will all die. Or if that sentence had as many typos as these books...Thes books have great story great plot and grate charactrse woh will all dye.

3 out of 5 stars Engrossing but ultimately unsatisfying.......2007-05-13

I have been a long-time fan of Weis and Hickman and their Dragonlance books. They have an uncanny ability to write engrossing stories full of conflict and angst and failure that somehow still come together at the end on a note of acceptance and hope. In general, the characters end the stories as better people than they started them as, and the price the characters pay is redeemed by what they gain by the end. I looked forward to this new series. The story is certainly engrossing -- I found it hard to put the books down, even during the darkest and bleakest points in the story. But unlike their earlier works, Weis and Hickman don't manage to wrap this one up well. Several story lines end abruptly, as if Weis and Hickman just ran out of steam on them and gave up. More important, almost none of the characters end the story having learned anything important. The sacrifices made by the characters remain unredeemed at the end. I was left disappointed and unsatisfied. Go ahead and read the story -- it is well written. Just be prepared to feel incomplete at the end.

5 out of 5 stars A Dragon Story and Much More.......2007-05-08

What makes this series so fascinating are the set of characters, especially the kender, who adds just the right amount of comic relief, and the freshness that comes from a vivid imagination on the part of the authors. You won't feel like you've read anything like this before.

5 out of 5 stars Great Addition.......2007-03-27

I've been working on the first book of the three and so far I'm enjoying it as much as all the other Dragonlance Novels I've read. If you love the Dragonlance novels, you won't be upset with this pick.

Finally! Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman have returned to Krynn, picking up at long last Dragonlance's seminal--and best--story line. Following directly on the heels of 1996's Dragons of Summer Flame, this new trilogy (dubbed The War of Souls) continues the arc begun with their phenomenally popular Chronicles series released so many moons ago. This first installment, Dragons of a Fallen Sun, sets up another epic conflict for the poor war-torn, dragon-beset populace of Krynn, some 40 years after the close of the Chaos War (and even longer since the triumph of the Companions in the War of the Lance), with the great dragons holding sway over most of Ansalon.

The action in Fallen Sun breaks as the mother of all storms sweeps across Ansalon, wreaking havoc on all the book's players: the Knights of Neraka (née Takhisis) laying siege to Solamnic-controlled Sanction; the elves of Qualinesti and their hated cousins the Silvanesti, barricaded behind an enormous magical shield; the aging Goldmoon in the Citadel of Light; the dragons, Malys, Beryl, et al., holed up in their lairs; even Bertrem and the librarians of Palanthas must scramble to keep their precious volumes dry. But it's a small girl who lies at the center of all this, an enigmatic waif who's quietly begun a bloody path of conquest in the name of the One God--even though now, in the Fifth Age, magic is on the wane and Krynn has no gods. Or does it? Heroes still die, mysteries still go unsolved, and Weis and Hickman show that they've still got it in spades, introducing a new set of characters (plus a couple of old favorites) and enough plot and locale jumps to keep you from wandering off. (The duo even provides enough backstory for Dragonlance neophytes to follow along.) --Paul Hughes

Book Description

The people of Krynn have known war in past ages. Some are still alive who remember the triumph of good at the conclusion of the War of the Lance. Still more remember the devastation of the Chaos War, which ended the Fourth Age of the world.

But now a new war is about to begin, more terrible than any have known. This war is one for the very heart and soul of the world itself.

2 out of 5 stars Good Universe, Boring Characters.......2007-09-20

I was a huge fan of the original Dragonlance Trilogy and the Twins Trilogy. Both of those were great!

However, this book is incredibly slow and NONE of the characters are interesting. They aren't heroic, villainous, funny, inspiring, or charismatic.

Where is the chemistry bewteen characters?
Where are the epic battles?
Where are the breath-taking landscapes?

Oh, yeah... in the first 6 books, but not in this one.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Read.......2007-01-05

It helps if you have read the Time of the Twins series, but not necessary, I hadn't but i could still follow the story very well. Fast read as it is very intriuging and entertaining.

2 out of 5 stars I should've left well enough alone..........2006-01-30

I'm going to echo what I've read other people write about the series: the quality of the writing really went downhill since the last time I read a book by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. It reminded me of the difference between the beginning of the Death's Gate Cycle and the end, when they seemed to be rushing through details to finish. I don't know if they needed to be edited a bit more or if they just focused too much on trying to move forward the overly-complicated plot and not enough on the actual writing. The second novel of this trilogy, "Dragons of a Lost Star," is by far the best: unfortunately, you have to get through the 600+ of "Dragons of a Fallen Sun" to get there. The characters are largely uninteresting and unlikeable. In fact, the only reason I liked "Lost Star" as much as I did is that Laurana play such a prominent role; but, I'm invested in Lauarana only from her role in the other DL books not from anything the authors have done here. The final book, "Dragons of a Vanished Moon," had a meandering plot and an ending that seemed completely contrived and overly simplistic. All in all, I should've just stopped with "Dragons of Summer Flame" and called my time on Krynn done.

3 out of 5 stars Good, But also bad.......2005-11-27

THis is a great book, but Krynn in this book reminds me of a house you have moved out of. All the walls, doors, and windows are still there, but the furniture is moved around, and different people live in it. Krynn has the same geography as it did in the chronicles pretty much, but without the gods to influence things and most of the characters we know gone, its like I said, the moved out of house. The part that especially saddened me was the Tower of HIgh Sorcery formerly of Palanthas. It was surrounded by the shoikan grove, housing the most powerful wizard who ever lived. Full of Potential. but now, all the artifacts inside the Tower drained of magic, the shoikan grove gone, and the tower in disrepair, it is just saddedening. ALmost nothing can happen from there. But I have read lster in the trilogy and it gets way better. My advice, tough it out, and get to the good later books.

5 out of 5 stars A New Start.......2005-09-06

Weis and Hickman again refresh the Dragonlance world. There seems to be a darker tone to this novel, and much more depth than I have read from them in the past. While I don't think that anything can compete with the Chronicles and Legends, this is about as close as you can get. Many of the old familiar characters are back, but it is the new and lesser known ones that get most of the spotlight. You don't get any better when Weis and Hickman are working together on Dragonlance.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent product for those with the time.......1999-09-21

As an avid collector of all things to do with the realms this was a must buy. The book itself is very much in the style of Faiths and Avaters being a weighty tome full of detail but in an easily accesible style. The premise is setting out an underwater campaign setting in the Sea of Fallen Stars complete with individual histories, cultures and new PC races.

As such each part is very well written and thought out but unfortunately the writer tries to do too much within this one product.

I hate to say it but this one occasion when the good old fasioned multiple book boxed set would be handy.

To top it all a few other products are really needed to help round this setting out fully, especially for newbie DM's, the complicated environment will be difficult to play out.

All in all this is a great book if your campaign is looking for something different, however, it needs an experineced DM with plenty of time to flesh out the myriad of ideas contaoned within.

Up there with Faith and Avaters as one of TSR's more thought provoking supplements.

From emerald jungles to the high seas to the glittering ballrooms of Regency London, beloved author Gaelen Foley tells a sweeping, sensual tale of the ruggedly handsome Lord Jack Knight and the passionate beauty who lays claim to his heart.

An English rose blooming in the untamed jungles of South America, Eden Farraday lives a life of independence–unheard of for a lady–with her doctor-turned-scientist father. But Eden misses England desperately. When the dangerous and darkly charming Lord Jack Knight sails into her life, she seizes her chance to return to civilization, stowing away aboard his London-bound ship.

Roguish and charismatic, a self-made shipping tycoon with a shadowy past and a well-guarded heart, Jack is sailing on a vital secret mission. When the redheaded temptress is discovered aboard his vessel, he reacts with fury–and undeniable lust. Forced to protect her from his rough crew, the devilish Lord Jack demands a scandalous price in exchange for Eden’s safe passage across the sea. As his wicked kiss ignites an unforgettable blaze of passion between them, Jack and Eden confront a soul-searing love that cannot be denied.

This author is very different in a very good way. This whole series is wonderful and if you haven't read all these books you really need to because it's great.

              3 out of 5 stars Pleasant Reading.......2007-06-27

This is the last book of Gaelen Foley's Knight series and in this story our hero is Mr Jack Knight the second knight brother and the heroine is Miss Eden Faraday.

I really liked the way Gaelen made both of them vivid and likeable characters. Miss Faraday is a clever and unconventional lady who spent most of her life in the jungles of South America. Jack is a powerful and tortured hero who spent most of his life trying to prove to his family that he is as good as his "true noble" brothers.

As usual the sheer sexiness and emotional impact are present and the sex scenes are really hot.

I agree with the other readers that the last part of the book is frustrating because both Jack and Eden relationship becomes boring and Eden seems to be only concerned with her clothes, her hair and social affaires. She is not even able to have an adult conversation with Jack.

There are also some mistakes regarding dates and facts presented in the other stories. It seems that different people have written these books: for instance, when Eden is presented to the knight family there is only 1 girl child "the only girl produced by the clan". Did Mrs Foeley forget that Bel gave birth to a child named Kate in the previous book "One night of sin"? I found it very annoying and there are mistakes regarding dates in most of the Knight books. Sounds like noone made a review before publishing them.

3 out of 5 stars First part was entertaining.......2007-02-06

In the beginning, the conversation and interaction between Erin & Jack was unexpected and interesting. Their actions surprised and delighted me. Very enjoyable first 284 pages. less so after that when the couple fought and other problems arose. Erin withheld sex because he wouldn't answer a question. She was more concerned with what other people thought than his needs. This didn't sit well for me since they were still in their honeymoon phase. He had his faults as well. I would have preferred different conflicts and faults for them at the end.

3 out of 5 stars Can't agree more with the other reviews of this book..........2007-01-20

The beginning of this book is fantastic. Like everyone else writing a review here, I lost interest in the story pretty quickly once the characters set foot on English soil. The character of Jack didn't live up to the "bad boy" reputation, hinted at in the other books of this series. If you are reading this series, this is a must read to wrap it all up, but be prepared for a some disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars It was so good but then...........2007-01-16

3.5 stars. I have to agree with a couple of reviewers in saying that this book started out great. Exciting locale, intriguing characters...I just knew this was going to be juicy novel...but then something happened around chapter fourteen that had me wondering if I was reading the same book. Suddenly, my characters were acting like different people. Couldn't Ms. Foley come up with a stronger reason for this couple to hit a rough patch? The one given in this book (he almost left her in Ireland) seem contrived. And how come when the heroine lie or betrays the hero trust, it's okay-but when the hero makes a mistake, he's to be raked over the coals? The point was that he didn't leave. He immediately went back and got her and she withholds sex for that? The woman knows he's on a secret mission, she knows the dangers he's up against and she throws a fit about going to England-which she didn't even need to do anymore. She want to go to England to get more funding for her father, but during her voyage at sea, she admitted that was the very thing her father didn't need. Then the excuse was that she needed to go England to find someone to love or a husband. Well, then she had that-so what was she throwing a fit about? Then when it was time for him to go back to South America and leave her England, she was fine. So the only abandonment she would accept was when she was abandoned in England? Ireland, she still had a staff of servants-she wasn't exactly alone there either. And what happened to Nipper? He just disappeared after Chapter thirteen. Never to be heard of again. I was also surprised by the ease in which Eden blended into society. She's shopping going to parties and never once sits and pines about what is taking her father so long to reach England. He was older and traveling with a man that was crazy. Of course, Conner killing a man what was about to rape her didn't seem so bad to me. You mean to to tell me Jack wouldn't kill someone who was trying to rape his wife? Sure, his actions later confirmed he was crazy, but initially I was like-so? The girl is raised in the jungle and she had NO transitional problems? Plus, there is no way a letter had reach Uncle Arthur leaving from Venezuela after Jack left and beat him to his Uncle. It wasn't like he had made a couple of stops.
Another issue I had was with so much telling. In the last part of the book suddenly I'm aware of everything being told to me as oppose to me seeing it and living in the moment. Example: why didn't we just see the scene when the maid comes onto Jack as to being told what had happened? Same with the grand fight with Ruiz. Why fade to black and then tell me what happened? Why couldn't I have seen Jack take one four men? I do like that Eden participated in her own rescue, but what happened to Jack being near death? Sure he was driven by rage and a fierce need to protect his woman, but it read more like Ms. Foley forgot he was supposed to injured. And a man rising up like a half-dead gladiator from the sand of the Colosseum just had me laughing. Tone it down a little on the dramatics. Ms. Foley is talented and this is my first book by her. I'm curious to read other works by her. Maybe there was a deadline issue or something that went wrong in the last third of this book.
