At the Fierce Edges of Your Life, Where Will You Turn?
"In the middle of the road of my life I awoke in a dark wood, where the true way was wholly lost." When you find yourself without bearings, as Dante Alighieri voiced so well centuries ago, where will you look for guidance? Throughout the ages, teaches David Whyte, the language of poetry has held the power to lend us courage ... to give us the vision of those who endured ... and to hazard ourselves boldly at the "fierce edges" of our lives. On "Clear Mind, Wild Heart" you will join this acclaimed poet and teacher to engage with the poetic imagination as your companion and guide for the difficult terrain we are all traversing.
Poetry, teaches Whyte, offers immediate and powerful tools unique from any other tradition. It can help us to see beyond the fragile surfaces of our lives, open us to the universal cycles and patterns that shape our lives, and awaken our conversation with what has been called the Untouchable, the Numinous, or the Eternal.
"Clear Mind, Wild Heart" guides you into the wellspring of this living poetic tradition through six hours of exploration and poetry with David Whyte, including the verses of such inspired voices as Emily Dickinson, William Blake, W. B. Yeats, Marina Tsvetayeva, Rainer Maria Rilke, Antonio Machado, and others. Through their words, you will discover how to "apprentice yourself to beauty" and find a place of belonging where you can hold loss and grief, the challenges of change, and the wonder of new discovery and adventure.
"The language of poetry takes us outside of our small selves and calls us to look at ourselves and the world with open eyes," teaches David Whyte. Whether you are a lifelong poetry lover or new to its insights and pleasures, "Clear Mind, Wild Heart" is an inspiring guide to answering that call.
"Clear Mind, Wild Heart" highlights:
Finding the courage to hazard yourself in the world
Emily Dickinson on the "aliveness" of words
Conversing with the unknowable
The harvest of your attention
How the language of poetry teaches us a relationship with silence
Goethe's "Holy Longing"
Apprenticing yourself to beauty
Blake's reflections on innocence and experience
Creating a "house of belonging" through speech and imagination
Work: pilgrimage into identity
Who are you? How presence shrives you of your old identity
Encountering the visitations of loss, grief, and defeat
The poetic spirit in marriage, parenting, and friendship
Six hours of exploration, as taught in David Whyte's acclaimed seminars and retreats

Lyrical, Engaging, Relevant, Deep, Inquisitive, Resonant.......2006-04-29
New to David Whyte, but always seeking inspiration and meaning, passion and depth, when a friend lent me a cd of his I couldn't believe my ears. It's like magic: the kind of speaking that is from the soul and the heart, filled with wisdom of his own insight and the insight of writers through the ages.
If you're reading this, you must find a way to hear him read poetry. He reads like no one I've ever heard before. Repeating lines with different inflection, tone, volume. David's as alive in his voice as Yo Yo Ma is in cello playing. He's changed the way I recite poetry for good.
This particular CD set was worth every dollar of the $44 it cost. It catalyzed my own poetry writing it was so inspiring.
Track issue.......2005-09-29
I have been converted to the work of David Whyte. I am really impressed with this man's passion, insight and clarity. I have not listened to all these CD's as I purchased his 'Midlife and the Great Unknown' and have been engrossed with this first.
A word of advice. That these CD's do not have tracks and each CD is a single track. This makes finding favourite sections a real chore. I am both disappointed in this, and that at least one of these CD's is an exact replica of the other CD mentioned above, BUT with the addition of this edit issue. The other CD is easier to drive. If you're not familiar with the beautiful work of David Whyte, and if you like more than one track on each CD, then try 'Midlife and the Great Unknown' first.
Inspiration without the schmaltz.......2004-06-14
These CDs put me in mind of an American friend who once said that she wasn't interested in anyone not transforming themselves. They've been spinning in my diskman ever since arriving in the post, and I've been listening to them during my long seaside walks, which is when I slough my skins.
In my view, the language of transformation has been devalued by the self-help industry. It's been so bled of meaning or beauty or both that it's of no use to any of us anymore.
Whyte has directed me towards a language that'll always have blood in its veins, and that's sharp still - the language in poetry. There're no easy slogans here, no pastiched wisdom. Nor are there any gags or attention-grabbers or bullet-points of formulaic action. Whyte just rolls on like a sea lapping steadily at the shore; he gives the listener an ocean of language to contemplate, to immerse themselves in - it's up to you to find what you need for whatever transformation you're currently attempting. His words are generous, intelligent, considered, and often deeply moving. Plus there are dozens of "eureka!" moments to be had: one of mine was when I first heard him say, "I think that boredom is a failure of the imagination." Another was when he introduced then read Yeats' poem "Song of wandering Aengus."
He's not saying much that's new - but he speaks with an eloquence that has woken me up. And he has a lovely voice, and speaks with a soothing cadence.
Buy these CDs. It's worth it.
Extraordinary audio.......2003-05-27
The message resonates, but even more satisfying than Whyte's commentary is his vocal interpretation of Dante, Yeats, Hopkins, Rilke (in German and English). This is an audio pleasure for people who regularly feast on poetry, but also for anyone willing to examine the power of language and the spoken word; listening to this tape brings back all the pleasure of being read to as a child.

Dreaming of you.......2007-08-19
Lisa has a wonderful way of writing for this era that keep you reading till your done with this book! I love all of her books!
Great sequel!.......2007-08-07
I just finished 'Dreaming of You' and absolutely loved it. Derek Craven was introduced in 'Then Came You' (*please read before this novel...it sets up Derek's character enormously*). In that novel, he positively stole the show for me, because LK potrayed him as a bastard at first but then we saw some hint that maybe there was more to him...
In this romance, I found something very rare in Regencies- character development. Sara was stiff and prim at first however with her relationship with Derek, we see something unfurling in her character...it's not a dramatic change that leaves the reader wondering if there is a split personality, but slowly we see her questioning how she lived her life before and relationship with Perry (the almost fiance she has in the country). Derek , of course, gradually thaws and understands how to love and be loved.
This was all done without some silly misunderstanding or Derek lashing out at Sara. To both protagonists credit, they did their requisite stupid acts at the beginning and then got on with it. Sara made some silly decisions (going to the ball and then going off with Jenner), and Derek did something questionable (he slept with Tabitha, a house wench because she looked like Sara). In his defense, he thought she was going back to the country to wed Perry. I hardly think he would have become celibate forever after that. And as Tabitha stated, he pretended she was Sara. It was more pathetic than wrath provoking in my opinion.
Finally, I liked the book because there was no mention of the ton. Sara and Derek are two commoners who found love with each other. That , to me is extremely more believable than some trite plot where a Lady falls in love with him and the entire book is about their social class. Dereks struggle was that he thought himself morally inferior to Sara, and not being loveable. Sara, knowing what love is, without riches, was able to show him what unconditional love is.
All in all, a great follow up, and an excellent showing on LK's part.
Loved Derek.......2007-07-28
Was so glad to read about Derek. He intrigued me in "Then Came You", and was hoping to get a bigger piece of him. Loved that you could read about Lily and Alex from "Then Came You". Just a good book!!!
Wonderful..........2007-07-25
i've always thought that derek craven was lisa kleypas' most intriguing characters--i've had a little crush on him since discovering in earlier kleypas novels...and this book doesn't disappoint! I adore "female writer" characters, and thought Sara made a wonderful heroine--perfect for the dark, troubled Craven--who's just yummy. Enjoy!
My favorite Kleypas book ever!.......2007-07-16
IF you've ever read any of Lisa Kleypas's books, you know she is a wonderful writing. So to say this is my favorite...well you know it must extraordinarily great! My second favorite kleypas is "when strangers marry". If you enjoyed this book you'll enjoy "Devil in winter" b/c it's pretty much Derek craven reembodied in the hero.

What A Dream.......2007-10-03
This was the 3rd book in Ray's series on The Grayson's. This book centers around Brandon. Like his other brothers, Brandon is determined not to let his mother trap him with a wife. What Brandon doesn't know is that, not only is his mother plotting to get him married, but a woman he would never suspect is also plotting to get him married...to her. This was a good book.
An o.k. read!!.......2007-05-01
This book was an alright read it lacked the passion of the other brother's story (Luke and Mason)!! I really wished it was the same caliber.
Beautiful Dreamer.......2007-04-18
Brandon has fallen into the trap -- the love trap. In "Dreaming of You" we find Brandon trying to dodge cupid's arrow that he is sure his mother, Ruth Grayson is aiming directly at his heart. However, Brandon as Luke and Morgan both swore, is sure he will not be caught. Brandon decides to turn the tables on Ruth when he thinks she is parading women in hopes of him falling for one of them. Brandon decides to ask his friends' sister, Faith McBride, the owner of Casa de Serenaid 5-Star Hotel, to help him. Unbeknown to Brandon, Faith has no problems with this task because Faith has been dreaming of Brandon since she was a teenager and Brandon helped her by escorting her to her prom.
Faith, like Ruth, has her own agenda. However, Faith has come to the conclusion that Brandon only sees her as her brothers' younger sister and has no intention of it being anything more. Well, as Faith sees it and literally dreams it -- this is not so. Faith knows deep down that if she was not the younger sister of Brandon's friends, he would see her different and come to think of her as a love interest. Faith sets out to "open Brandon's eyes" for him. She seeks the help of her friend, the magnificient Blade Navaronne, a real estate mogul as well as a few other things. Blade comes to Faith's rescue along with a few of Blade counterparts. Faith is surrounded by handsome men showering her with affection. To Brandon's dismay, he is deeply offended by this because even though he did not admit it to Faith, he has been dreaming of her as a man dreams about the woman he loves. Brandon realizes that if he does not act and act promptly that Faith will indeed be just the woman of his dreams and another man will have taken her away. Brandon cannot bear the thought of another touching the woman of his dreams.
"Dreaming of You" is exciting with a twist of humor to keep you smiling. It is definitely a wake up call and I know some men read books, but this is definitely one that men should read.
Dreams Come True.......2007-03-20
Ruth Grayson is the mother of all mothers. How she picks the perfect matches for her children is uncanny. Thoroughly enjoyed the sweet romance between Brandon and Faith. Can't wait to see what's coming for Pierce and Sierra.
Ok read, best one so far.......2007-02-04
Ok its 14 months sine Mrs Grayson first matchmakings effort were successful with Luke and Catherine, five months since Morgan and Phoenix got hitched and now its Brandon's turn. In the real world having siblings marriying in such a short space of time is hardly likely to happen but it is fun reading about it. This is the best one so far, I found Faith's antics very amusing and seeing Brandon fall for it was so predictable.
Would love to read how Pierce and Sierra fall- the sister is the only character I don't find likeable maybe she will come across better in her own story.

I couldn't put it down.......2006-03-14
This is a great book. Really fascinating. Entertaining and thought provoking. A page turner. Highly recommended.
Who was lying?.......2003-08-25
I re-read this book recently, together with Jules Masserman's "Sexual Allegations and Social Turmoil". I had been convinced by it when it first came out but in view of recent studies of false memories and Richard McNally's "Remembering Trauma" doubts now arise. It is very well written - far better than Masserman's book. Reading it this time I concluded that Noel's recovered memories of childhood [physical] abuse were obviously [not real]. She was duped again.
Masserman was his own worst enemy. His line of defense was "if Jules Masserman does it, it had to be right" accompanied by grandiose parading of his credentials. He denied ever taking female patients out on his boat after having admitted to it under oath. I was not impressed by the fact that the accusations against him were multiple. This happened in the Barbara Kelly Michaels case and the Salem Witch Trials. It does not, in fact, look as if any court was ever convinced of the [physical contact] allegations, but his treatment methods were so far out of line as to constitute malpractice. It's as if he considered such a mundane matter as keeping a record of administering sodium amytal injections beneath him. He behaved as if he were still in the sixties, when prominent psychanalysts dominated psychiatry and there was no such thing as evidence-based practice.
Quick read, informative.......1999-04-30
Wow -- great book. The author goes to a very eminent psychiatrist for emotional and marital problems. At first it seems the doctor is just "controlling," demeaning, and manipulating her life. He also starts giving her the barbituate Sodium Amytal during office visits, which he claims will help her remember past hurts.
After 18 years and $100,000 of treatment, she comes out of an Amytal session earlier than expected with the doctor raping her. How will this life-long intimidated woman respond, especially when a number of those she turns to are sure she must have imagined or "dreamed" the rape, and an equal number are afraid to cross the famous psychiatrist?
A compelling story of a woman whose early life history set her up for continuing domination and abuse by the psychiatrist she turned to for help.

Great if you not only loved listening to the songs but would like some music theory also.......a must for every Selena fan & musician
Lasting Legacy.......2006-08-10
Selena was truly a musical legend. Her tragic death left a hole in the hearts of millions of fans and her music continues to be popular even to this day.
This song book is a nice addition for a collector. It is of good quality and the music is easy to read. Additionally, the song lyrics are provided, with English translations to all of Selena's Spanish hits.
My only qualm is that the product description mentioned pages of photos of Selena--these are not there. The book contains the same photos found in the "Dreaming of You" CD booklet.
Overall, a nice addition to your Selena Collection.
A wonderful musical jewel.......1999-02-04
Selena sings great in Spanish or English. It was her voice that made her famous, not her murder, and you can see why on this chart topping album. There is something in the album for everyone. It's tough to realize Selena never found out how talented she really was and how good her music is.
Selena was & still is the best. Her music will stay the best.......1998-04-29
Everyone in Greensboro N.C loves Selena. Every one you talk to knows and loves her music.I love her album And the movie starting (Jennifer lopez). Selena will always be in our hearts. Love Selena 's favorite fan. Nicky roberts.
SELENA, WE MISS YOU!!!!!!!.......1998-02-18
MY GOD, SELENA'S SAD GOODBYE TOUCHED OUR LIVES, AND THIS ALBUM FEATURES SONGS FROM HER "TEJANO MUSIC" CAREER, AS WELL AS FROM HER ANGLO MUSIC CAREER THAT SHE WAS WORKING ON BEFORE HER TRAGIC DEATH. MY FAVORITE SONG ON THE ANGLO SIDE IS "DREAMING OF YOU." Y COMO SIEMPRE, MI CANCION FAVORITA (ON THE TEJANO MUSIC SIDE) WILL ALWAYS BE "COMO LA FLOR." SELENA WOULD HAVE TRULY MADE AN EXCELLENT CONTRIBUTION TO THE ANGLO MUSIC WORLD.

Not So Fairy-Tale But Even Better!.......2005-11-17
The book is a sequel to Then Came You. The first book doesn't have to be read to understand this book, but you learn some things about Derek from that book. Well, Dreaming of You is about the prim, well-bred lady, Sara Fielding and Derek Craven, the owner of the most exclusive gambling house in London. Sara, a writer, goes to London to do research for her next controversial book. Derek is accosted by two men in a dark alley and is saved by the pistol-wielding woman, Sara. So now he is in her debt and she wants him to grant her permission to use his club as 'research'. He rejects, absolutely refuses to put her in such a dangerous environment, but the little miss can be quite stubborn.
I love Lisa Kleypas's books. This book has become my favorite (close tie with her Wallflower series). I was wondering through a book store and happened to spot a book of hers out of place. I picked it up and it happened to be Dreaming of You. I read the back and had to get the book and finished it that day. I love the fact that the main character, Derek, isn't a haughty aristocrat or an aristocrat's illegitimate child and was able to become rich with self-determination. He was handsome but not disgustingly, perfectly so and very analytical. I just loved Kleypas's writing. Humorous but cynical. And putting the logical, street-toughened man with the expressive, well-bred county girl, Sara, was an exciting match. I loved how Sara was able to keep putting herself into his life and he was forced to acknowledge her when all he wanted was to keep the irresistible minx away! The part where Sara goes to Derek's masquerade a transformed temptress and enticed all the unknowing men including Derek was my favorite part of the book. Sara was adorably innocent when mixed up with the wicked Derek. It was a delightful read. I definitely recommend this book to all romance book lovers.
