Book Description

When Bronwyn turned twenty she took the oath to protect, and for the last five years she's kept that promise, working as a kind of one-witch secret service to the British Prime Minister. Her arsenal includes a combination of potions, spells, explosions, mind-reading tricks, and general butt-kicking skills. But Bronwyn has a soft side, too-especially when it comes to Dr. Sam, the favorite physician of her new hometown, Sweet, Texas. He's smart, funny, adorable, everything she could want in a man. Except he's also a warlock-a big no-no in Bronwyn's book of dating. Being a witch is definitely getting in the way of her sex life. If zapping evil jerks is easy, why is finding a boyfriend so hard?

I purchased this for a teenager. I read it first. She was not given the book. I had no idea. This, I would say is what would be wrong with buying a book without actually looking thru it first.

5 out of 5 stars Oh! I love it!!.......2007-03-07

Candace Havens did a fantastic job on creating a great character in a great series. Bronwyn, a witch for 5 years, is a protector of sorts to a prime minister. The PM has asked her to look after a sheik as well, and he's not too bad to look at. Meanwhile back at home in Sweet, Texas, there is a new doctor in town. Not only is Sam a doctor, but he's a warlock and Bronwyn has sworn off all of those! Oh, and he's definitely not bad to look at either. Now we have a confused witch with a bounty on her head who is trying to find a villian that is out to get the sheik! Whew...this witch doesn't get a break! Very well done!

3 out of 5 stars Very light read.......2007-01-09

There really isn't a lot to recommend this book. It is a cute (if far fetched), quick read that might have turned out OK if every single, romance book cliché ever created wasn't employed at the end.

Bronwyn, a high level witch living in Texas, works for the British PM and employees her magic to protect him and by proxy, the free world. On a business trip, she finds herself protecting a very cute Sheik as well as the PM (big bodyguard no-no in the real world). Well, someone wants Sheikie dead in a serious manner. After saving the Sheik and PM, she returns to Texas where she meets a cute warlock (which means traitor and is not a suitable title for a male witch-type person) The Sheik is impressed by her skills and hires her to protect him from assassination. Bronwyn is off to the Middle East before she knows it and sets off to discover the truth behind the plot.

The book is written in a diary like style, which is a turn-off for some.

1 out of 5 stars Stopped on page 105.......2007-01-03

It takes an extremely bad book for me not to finish it. I hate not following through, especially with books. The format was terrible. There is nothing wrong with a diary format with the exception that it is written in almost all fragment sentences. The reader spends most of their time trying to figure out who the hell the protagonist is talking about. What made things worst is the prequel that lets you know the whole point of the story is that the character will choose between two men. Well, duh, just turn to the last page and you know who. I did. Then I spent 100 pages asking myself, why him? He's so annoying! What a dweeb!

The character, herself, is horrible. She bashes men constantly in one breath and then talks about all the one-night stands she wants to have. Whatever! She could have been a man, what with sex on her brain 24/7.

Granted, I didn't finish it, but I can't help regretting the time I lost reading this book, when I could have spent it reading something so much better.

1 out of 5 stars Get from the library.......2006-12-16

I saw this on a library shelf. It sounded interesting. After three nights of trying to get into it, I gave up! I understand the diary format but it was a bit confusing. Times didn't match up. People come out of the woodwork after the fact to explain things. I feel bad for the person who paid $14 for the book! Always check with your local library first. Doesn't cost anything and you can always put a hold on books and have them delivered to your nearest branch.

1 out of 5 stars lame story.......2006-09-22

I didn't finish this one. It was slow to begin with. Once I got to the middle, there was a chapter that ended with Maddie totally upset and worried(even crying)about her sister Cassie. The first page of the chapter that follows has Maddie laughing at something where her sister was just involved in a crime. What happened here? Did a chapter get lost or something? 100% no brainer read

4 out of 5 stars Adventure , Mystery and Romance.......2006-02-28

`Charmed and Dangerous' by Lori Wilde is a novel about twin sisters who find themselves in the middle on art thieves and the FBI. Cassie is the spontaneous twin who works in the art world and is recruited by the FBI for sting operation - that of course goes bad. Maddie finds herself protecting her twin yet again with help of handsome FBI agent. I would recommend this novel and `Saving Allegheny Green' by Lori Wilde and Flirting With Danger by Suzanne Enoch.

4 out of 5 stars Prepare to be Charmed!.......2005-11-25

I've been following Lori Wilde's books for quite some time now and constantly marvel at her ability to turn out likeable characters, sexy reads, and fast-paced plots that keep you turning the pages.

In Charmed and Dangerous, she does it again! Bringing former Olympic athlete Maddie Cooper and "win driven" FBI Agent David Marshall together to track down Maddie's twin sister, Cassie, brings all of Wilde's best elements together.

Maddie is determined, as always, to protect her sister and dig her out of whatever trouble she's gotten herself into, while David is convinced Cassie (who is supposed to be working "undercover" with him to catch an art thief) has sided with the enemy.

When David and Maddie meet, it's a fast paced situation of mistaken identity and physical comedy (another of Wilde's strengths). From there it's a clash of wills and goals as David tries everything and anything to get the upper hand on his suspect and beat the art thief at his own game and Maddie's determination to protect her sister. That leads to constant clashes and one-upmanship between the two...and a lot of sparks!

Once paired, Maddie and David are off around the world on Cassie's trail, always one step behind the art thief, and constantly coming closer and closer to giving in to the attraction building between them.

I really enjoy Lori Wilde's stories and her talent for creating unique, likeable characters in stories that never take the predictable path. Charmed and Dangerous was a fun, flirty read with oodles of action and adventure, just the way I like it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Romantic Art Mystery.......2005-06-08

This is my first book by Lori Wilde. I was very impressed with the way the plot was staged detailing the twin sisters' lifetime relationship against the chance meeting of Maddie and David.

Maddie was the determined twin, taking her feelings of responsibility for her sister to great heights after living through her sister's three month coma at age nine following her fall through the ice at their Texas family home. Her mother had always told her she had to take care of Cassie. She has blamed herself for her sister's accident and insisted on living her life on the lookout for her sister's welfare and safety ever since.

David Marshall is an FBI agent on a 10 year hunt for an art thief that has continued to elude authorities. His personal vendetta against Peyton Shriver is what drives him, to the detriment of any personal relationships with women. His meeting with Maddie while jogging in a park waiting for her identical twin sister Cassie, an FBI informant, is intense and full of sparks. The sexual tension during this very physical meeting is just the beginning!

This book was engaging from beginning to end. I am looking forward to Cassie's story in Mission: Irresistible!

5 out of 5 stars A delightfully charming book.......2004-08-02

Charmed and Dangerous by Lori Wilde is a fast paces sexy romp.

Maddie Cooper has always put her life second to any problems from her more adventurous twin, Cassie. Cassie is missing and Maddie will move heaven and earth to find her sister.

FBI agent David Marshall broke the rules by using civilian Cassie Copper to broker a sting. When Cassie sister comes looking for her, she stumbles head first into the scene. David didn't feel one iota of attraction to Cassie but he is sure feeling it for Maddie.

As David and Maddie hunt all over Europe, they realize they have met their match in each other. This book is a joy from the first word to the last. Its refreshing to see a hero and heroine that can easily safe themselves as well as each other.

I can't wait to read Cassie story...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The light and shadow of emotion -- Highly recommended.......2001-09-22

Meghan Patterson represents the exact kind of trouble Detective Gabe Conally tries to avoid with secrets in her eyes and lies on her lips. His fascination is purely business, of course, since her nephew is a valuable witness. Never mind the first kiss backfires, failing to prove there isn't any attraction between them. Few women elicit an emotion response him, beyond the obvious, but Meghan touches parts of him that he has never shared with anyone. Soon he finds himself offering to investigate the case involving Meghan's sister, despite the fact that the case is closed, in exchange of her nephew Danny's assistance in an ongoing investigation.

Meghan believes the Chicago police are responsible for her sister's death and will do anything to protect Danny from the same fate. Her sister had been telepathic, a gift she'd passed to her son. Further, Meghan guards her hard won privacy carefully. Gabe's presence brings her pain, anger, and regret too close to the surface. She finds his intensity unnerving even as she fights her growing desire for this irritating, persistent man. Her sister's death appears to be tied to another case Gabe's working, and Meghan finds herself drawn into Gabe's world despite her protestations.

Kylie Brant brings two cynics who believe the only person they can trust is himself or herself together in HARD TO HANDLE. While he was a juvenile delinquent and she was from a wealthy family, they both know the meaning of pain and betrayal. The growth of these characters as they begin the difficult job of exposing vulnerabilities and risking further hurt makes them endearing and believable. Further, outrageous, sizzling heat always threatens just beneath the surface to erupt in tumultuous passion, refusing to allow them to simply walk away. In addition, the inclusion of a five-year-old telepath lends HARD TO HANDLE an addition challenge, resulting in a vividly unique read. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A nail biting, suspenseful romance.......2002-01-10

With the cunning of true malevolence, Victor Mennan's minions stalk Sara Parker. Every few months she changes her identity, moves to a new city, and radically alters her appearance. She's become an expert at assuming false identities, never allowing her defenses to slip, and never ever allowing anyone too close. Then she meets Nick Doucet at the restaurant where she waitresses. One glance and she knows he's dangerous, not only because he may be a threat to her physical safety, but also because she knows he can slip past the defenses of her heart. And she's very tired of running away from danger.

Nick sees beyond their obvious differences, easily recognizing the similarities he shares with Sara. He wonders if, like him, with every disguise does she leave behind a piece of her true self, or even if she knows who she is anymore. Sara has the ability to give hope that perhaps he hasn't lost his soul after all. He recognizes their kindred spirits, their shared resilience, and their absolute determination to survive impossible circumstances. He's intrigued by the blend of nervous waif and wary combatant. But Nick knows from brutal experience what happens if he lowers his defenses and gets to close to people involved in a case. If he looses his objectivity, people die.

The Charmed and Dangerous series by Kylie Brant ends with the thrilling HARD TO TAME, a nail biting, suspenseful romance filled with equal parts of danger to lives and danger to hearts. The series' unifying theme of danger from the menace of a deadly criminal boss reaches a stunning conclusion. Further, Nick is a bigger-than-life hero with a dark past in the Green Berets where he gained the knowledge and skill to hire out to those in need of his services. Sara's street smart, spunky, and his exact opposite. Together they make an explosive team. Very highly recommended.

One weekend two years ago AJ Michaels let reporter Dare McKay too close, too fast. Then out of fear, she seized on a coincidence to accuse him of professional impropriety, effectively restoring the distance between them. Part of her still wants to let him close, but a stronger part finds the idea repellant, lest she wind up like her mother. Now a case forces them to work together, and AJ finds her defenses crumbling every time Dare is near. Indeed, the way Dare slips past her defenses is more dangerous than any criminal AJ has ever prosecuted.

One of the city's most respected journalists and winner of two Pulitzer prizes, Dare has doggedly followed a path of corruption for years that now leads to working with AJ. He can never seem to forget the two intoxicating nights they shared, or stop baiting her into a response, even if it's negative. AJ needs his knowledge of Chicago's criminal underbelly. He needs to find a way to get close to her and win her trust.

The second part of the Charmed and Dangerous miniseries, HARD TO RESIST follows HARD TO HANDLE with a powerful storyline and extraordinary characterizations. The unifying conflict of the series gains momentum, yet HARD TO RISIST could also be read as a standalone. AJ's complex family relationships and contradictory feelings add sympathy, while Dare's own family story provides powerful motivation. The past paced plot keeps the pages turning. Add this series to your keeper shelf, and watch for the concluding installation, HARD TO TAME. Very highly recommended.

Going home again is not an experience treasured by everyone.

Food stylist Maxine Henley finds facing the painful memories she left behind especially tedious. Arriving in Schomberg, just in time for her mother's "Solstice Bizarre," Max is handed a love charm one minute and a telephone break-off by her fiancé the next! Thank goodness her long-time friend Sam O'Neal provided a strong shoulder to lean on. A very strong, very handsome, very charming shoulder at that.

Sam had once felt as Max did, that their tiny hometown held no attraction, the shared memories were painful for him as well. But now that he has come home, he has found comfort and a place for himself in Virginia. Can he convince Max that a safe life with her city-boy fiancé is not what she really wants or needs? Especially when she returned his kisses with such bone-melting fire?

Ms. Simmons creates a vivid setting and good emotional conflict in this story. The passionate tension between Sam and Maxine is vivid. Readers will keep the pages turning, needing to see Maxine heal and Sam win her heart once and for all.

5 out of 5 stars An enchanting tale of love and magic!.......2000-04-04

On her first visit back to her mother's home in several years, a mysterious fairy named Iona hands Maxine Henley a love charm, telling her "Wear this close to your heart and when the moon smiles, the right man will find you, guaranteed." Not one for believing in magic, Maxine hangs on to the good luck emblem and is glad she did as her life turns upside down. One minute she's engaged to marry Peter and the next he's was breaking off their engagement -- over the phone! Could her visit home to her mother's Virginia bed & breakfast get any worse? Just when she needs a shoulder to cry on, Sam O'Neal, her best friend from childhood appears there to lean on. But since when did he become so handsome and dangerously charming!

Sam knew his beautiful old friend Max was still carrying a torch for her scoundrel fiance, but that didn't stop him from falling under her spell. And the way she returned his lingering kisses told him that she needed more than friendship, she just didn't know it yet. There was only one problem - their tiny hometown was the last place an ambitious girl like Max wanted to be. It was up to Sam to come to come up with the right magic to convince Max that you can return home to the ones you love.

In her latest book, "Charmed and Dangerous," author Lynda Simmons once again charms her readers with a tale that has a pinch of magic, a dash of mystery and a whole lot of love and humor. The magical spell cast by Simmon's delightful story line will keep readers enchanted, and wishing on the nearest star for more. Look for Simmon's next entrancing book, "This Magic Moment," to appear on bookshelves this fall.

3 out of 5 stars Charmed and Dangerous.......2000-03-28

Maxine Henley returns to Schomberg, Virginia for the Summer Solstice Bizarre and meets her childhood friend Sam O'Neal, a man she never imagined would offer more than a platonic relationship and a shoulder to cry on. She discovers he's able to give her much more as she allows Sam to talk her out of her engagement to a prominent food photographer. A sweet, down-to-earth romance with a sensual edge that keeps the reader entranced.

    The spy who loved her...

Gavin Graham works alone, trusts no one, and never, ever gives his heart. But the spy may have met his match in an ex-governess. Laura Devane has been handpicked to fulfill an important mission: distracting him from the deceptive charms of a Russian countess. Once, years ago, she defiantly rejected his marriage proposal. Now she meets his cool mockery and sensual advances with a maddening self-possession. And she plunges headlong into a perilous investigation that leaves him fearing for her safety. Clearly the woman is a menace--to international peace and to his peace of mind. For Laura's passion for intrigue matches his own, and her touch leaves him stunningly aroused, tempting him to join her in a life of dangerous desires....

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars A good read.......2006-02-05

I really enjoyed this novel. The heroine is as intelligent and insightful as she was described to be; the author relates her character so well that I truly understood her desire to become a spy and finally obtain the chance to shape history. The hero, on the other hand, wasn't as well-fleshed out. The spy plot, developed amidst the Congress of Vienna, was intriguing--the villianess's plans caught me by surprise when they were finally unvealed. I recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorites.......2001-10-03

Since I was just scanning Amazon to see if there was a new Jane Ashford in the offing (please!), I felt compelled to put my two cents in about this book, considering some other reviews here. Along with some other notables--Elizabeth Thornton, Joan Wolf, Mary Jo Putney, Connie Brockway, and Judith Ivory spring to mind--Jane Ashford writes some of the most interesting, complex and satisfying historical romances around. To each her own, but if you like a little edge to your romance reading, try Jane Ashford.

    1 out of 5 stars Gosh Awful!.......2001-06-23

With luxurious colors and a romantic landscape, the cover was intriguing. What I found inside was rancid. Set in Jane Austen's time, Charmed's "hero" is Gavin Graham. The reader is quickly informed that Gavin sleeps around, I suppose to make him dangerous. Yes, well, during that time period it certainly would make him dangerous--he would have rampant venereal disease and no way to cure it. I don't find this attractive.

As for Laura Devane,I found myself wishing she'd been knifed instead of Gavin. Ashford attempted to make her spunky but she just ends up seeming to have terminal stupidity--making choices that a supposedly intelligent governess wouldn't no matter how starved for true-life adventure she might be. By the time I had read 50 pages, I put this stinker where it belonged--in my bathroom. That seemed a more appropriate place to read it, and that way it was for only 5 to 10 minutes at a time.

I wonder how Jane Ashford managed to get good professional reviews on this porker. She must have good contacts in the business but she'll never get another cent of my money and I no longer trust the opinions of Affaire de Coeur.

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Escape Novel.......1999-11-29

This was the first Jane Ashford book I read and, I think, one of her best. The plot was well laid-out and grabbed me right away. The hero was suitably dashing :), and the heroine (thank god) did not sink into the depths of Romance Heroine Stupidity, a disease that seems to be going around. The exotic locales and espionage make this wonderful escape story. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes Elizabeth Peters, Barbara Michaels, Susan Wiggs, or Lisa Kleypas.

1 out of 5 stars undeveloped relationship, unreal plot, unfulfilling book.......1998-12-20

after deciding to take a chance on this previously unheard of (by me) author, i am now resolved to stick with tried & true authors. After an intriguing blurb, i was very disappointed after the initial chapters to find the plot unravelling rapidly, the characters uninteresting and no explanation on how they suddenly fell in love with each other.i couldn't even finish the book for wanting to hurl against the nearest wall.

This compelling thriller is both a touching love story and a masterful portrayal of the struggle for geopolitical control of postwar Germany. Network correspondent Jake Geismar, who covered Berlin before the war, has returned to the devastated city, ostensibly to cover the Potsdam Conference but actually to find the woman he loves. Miraculously, Lena Brandt, Jake's wartime mistress, has survived. However, her mathematician husband is missing, and both the American and Russian intelligence services are hunting him. When the bullet-ridden body of an American soldier washes up on the shores of Potsdam in front of Jake's eyes just as Truman, Churchill, and Stalin convene the first postwar conference, Jake is plunged into a maelstrom of intrigue, corruption, and betrayal.

A brilliantly evoked portrait of a unique moment in history (the end of one war and the beginning of another), The Good German amply fulfills the promise shown by Joseph Kanon in his two earlier novels, Los Alamos and The Prodigal Spy. --Jane Adams

    Book Description

With Hitler finally defeated, Jake Geismar, former Berlin correspondent for CBS, has managed to wrangle one of the coveted press slots for the Potsdam Conference. His assignment: a series of articles on the American occupation of postwar Berlin. His personal agenda: to find Lena, the German mistress he left behind at the outbreak of the war. When he stumbles on a murderan American soldier washed up on the shore of the conference groundshe thinks he has found the key that will unlock his Berlin story. What he finds instead is a larger story of corruption and intrigue reaching deep into the heart of the occupation and a city not only physically but morally devastated, where children scavenge for food in the rubble, sex can be had for a cigarette, and the black market is the only means of survival. Berlin at zero hour is like nowhere elsea tragedy, and a feverish party after the end of the world. And nothing is simplenot the murder of a soldier and not any of the lives, American and German, that Jake encounters as he tries to solve it. More unsolvable still is the larger crime that hangs over everything in 1945, a crime so huge it seems beyond punishment. At once a murder mystery, a love story, and a riveting portrait of a unique time and place, The Good German is a historical thriller of the first rank.

5 out of 5 stars The Chaos of Berlin 1945.......2007-08-26

Are there any good Germans left at the end of World War II? Put another way, who bears responsibility for the enslavement and slaughter of the Jews? Is it just those Nazis who actually participated in the final solution, or must we also include all those millions of Germans who looked the other way to protect themselves, their careers, property and family? And what can we possibly say about Jews who either failed in their duty to other Jews or even actively participated in the final solution themselves?

Although this perceptive novel is framed as a mystery when a young American soldier is killed at the start of the Allied Potsdam negotiations, it's also an exploration of morality. The many voices of the novel examine the problem of responsibility for genocide from various points of view. Jake Geismar, the American reporter who drives the story with his insistence on investigating the soldier's death, naively believes (at least at the start) that anyone he knew before the war when he lived in Berlin must be a victim, not a perpetrator. He is aided in this belief by the ruins of Berlin he sees all around him. Bernie Teitel, a Jew himself, is the Army's Nazi hunter, who studies the voluminous paper files kept by the Nazis looking for people to indict. Also on the American side are the scientist hunters, who want to bring the Nazi rocket scientists over to the US to exploit them for their knowledge, regardless of their complicity.

The German points of view are also well-represented: hausfraus who claim no knowledge of anything, scientists who claim their only interest is science, old men who maintained an anti-Nazi stance throughout the conflict and still managed to survive, Jews who hunted other Jews, gentiles who tried to protect Jews. Of actual German soldiers we hear little, probably because their case is so easy. And all of this is played out against the frightful ruins of Berlin, so appalling and ever-present they become a character in the story.

In the end the mystery is solved and in a sense the good guys win, but by the time you get there you are far less sure who the good guys actually are. And, if you're at all like me, you may find yourself wondering what you would do if you found yourself in the same desperate situation as the German populace under Hitler.

It's a fascinating and complex novel, although not one to read if you're looking for an escapist mystery.

A great read and very informative of the aftermath of WW II and the history of the period of the Nuremburg trials.
It's well researched, creative and well written.

3 out of 5 stars the book and the movie.......2007-07-13

the author of this book has obviously watched an old classic movie, 'the third man', then wore surgical gloves to goof it into his own creation with a little bit more twists. watching this movie, then watching 'the third man', you might find something quite true like what i've just seen in another pathetic movie, 'the last stand'. there's a piece of dialog in that movie that i'd like you to have it too, something like: 'in the stand-up comedy show biz, everybody stealing everybody's jokes...' the cunning ones know how to steal them and adapted them by adding more twists in it, the bad and lazy ones just steal them as they are.

with all said here, i got nothing more to say. no matter it's 'the third man' or 'the good german', they seem to be quite similar.

I read this book in anticipation of watching the George Clooney/Cate Blanchett movie - I'm not certain I'll watch the movie now. I can't say I enjoyed it, yet I can't say I didn't. It wasn't one of those books that left you so conflicted or so deep and resonating that it stayed with you. Rather, it was a book that tried very hard.

There were moral conflicts that tried to dig deeper into the human psyche and the times than it actually did. Jake Geismar, returned to Germany for a story on the post-war world. Yet he spends the majority of the book looking either for his wartime (married) mistress, or after her, or following the death of a Tully, very insignificant American officer with no story whatsoever. The two never quite intersected, but I was left with the feeling that they were supposed to on a grander scale than they brushed.

In a truly convoluted plot, filled with only one extremely interesting secondary character, Gunter, we travel across Berlin. And back. And over it again. While all this is appealing in the history of the city, the postwar scenery, the hopelessness and helplessness of the people, and the arrogance of the conquering heroes (American, British, and Russian alike), it's all randomness.

Victorious, the Allies are once more at a standoff with the Communist Russians and in a race to acquire all the German Scientists they could. We want Lena's husband, the Russians now have him, Jake wants the husband out of the way, Lena's barely a blip on the plot-radar, and there's still Tully to consider. The plot is a thinly disguised reason to expound on the history of Berlin (which really is well done, I can't say that enough), and the affair between Jake and Lena.

And there's still no story for Jake.

Written by the daughter of his father's mistress and reconstructed from a childhood memory, the manuscript tells the love story of a young American pilot and a destitute but spirited young mother, who, in 1948, doesn't take no for an answer when she decides to whisk her sister's small daughter out of Berlin just as the Russians blockade the city.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Timeless...A Must Read! .......2006-11-07

A deeply, moving, simple and tragic story of one woman's strength and courage in a time of political demise, a story of such fragile and temporary splendor between a man and a woman and the lives of those they love in-between. Each scene beautifully portrays the little events that happen along the way. Just a simple and delicate account of her life during a time when Germany was being invaded by the Russians and the process of dividing the country into East and West. It starts with Alex, the pilot's son, who, by his father's wish, tracks down Ruth's daughter, Penelope, to let her know of her inheritance after his death. Penelope tells their story and Alex finds out the truth of what happened between her mother and his father. In the midst of a war-torn country, Ruth, a mother of two, lives day-by-day among the rubble of bombed buildings. She is an unsung hero of courage who decides to take the risk and go to Berlin for her sister's daughter, Paulie. She meets "The Good American" who ends up falling in love with her and lavishly swoons her, giving her a piece of happiness in the midst of a black and white world. He ends up risking his title by forging paperwork for entry to Berlin by train while having to bare the atmosphere of desparation and the uncertainty and fear of being sent away to Siberia for not having the right papers. Then she meets others along the way who help her get to the place where she can cross the mountain to get to the West after the trains stopped by order of the Russian army. Just simple gestures of compassion and support. It was lovely yet heartrending at the same time. It was deeply moving, passionate, addicting and emotional. It shows that just trying to live through dark times is an act of courage and even in the midst of it all, there is hope and love.

    5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Read..........2005-09-27

Ursula Maria Mandel's "The Good American" is a stunning novel of complex emotions. Her writing style is so powerful and image-laden, that I truly felt as if I was among the characters, experiencing the sights, smells and emotions that are so vividly captured among the pages of this novel. While this is a story of love, familial devotion, humility, perseverence and survival, it also beautifully chronicles one man's attempt at coming to terms with a flood of pent-up emotions in his personal journey towards forgiveness. I simply could not put this book down. If ever there was a story worthy of being told, this is the story.

All whose lives have been touched by the ravages of war bear in their memory forever the grief, losses, and struggles to grasp some meaning for living out the balance of their days. The post-war adjustments for many perhaps never end. Time has a way of mending broken hearts but the wounds and scars of war heal very slowly. We meet people every day whose lives have been changed immeasurably by conflict and many of their stories never get into print. The several life stories that are woven so ingeniously in The Good American are reminders of many who have coped courageously with adversity and found a way not only to survive, but also to use their limited resources and native talents for remaking of an orderly world. Ursula Mandel, who grew up in postwar Germany, weaves a tale of ordinary people who did extraordinary things. The warm German hospitality I found as an American officer stationed in Wiesbaden three decades after World War II had ended grew out of a mutual respect Americans and Germans had one for another. Americans I knew immensely admired the German work ethic and ingenuity, their clean streets and homes, their delicious strudels, their superb automobiles, but most of all their determination to rebuild their cities and lives. Ursula Mandel's book is a benediction and compliment to those Americans and Germans who loved and cared enough to forge a lasting friendship for our two countries. The book has the essentials for a powerful cinema and I hope to see the story come alive on the big screen.

This is a mervelous book which took me down memory lane. The book has insight, strength and Ms. Mandel's writing is the finest. I was one of those dirty starving kids who played in the rubble and lived subhumanly. I know that every word Ms. Mandel put in her novel about that time in our lives is not only true but she has an uncanny way of bringing it all alive again.

Looking for Ms. Mandel's next book.

Ursula Mandel in her novel "The Good American" has shown exceptional talent in that she is able to bring the poverty, hunger, emotional and intellectual devastation of that era after WWII to the page so poignantly that it is impossible to put the book down. I devoured it in one sitting, shed tears, laughed, and above all Miss Mmandel made me feel all those feelings of so long ago all over again. I was a ten year old child in 1945 when the war ended. I experienced all she writes about myself, the hunger the poverty, the loss of everything including a father. She has the ability to paint this time in history so sharply that the book becomes an actual experience. Am anxiously awaiting Miss Mandel's next book.

      Book Description

Upon publication in 1895, Gabriele Reuter's From a Good Family (Aus guter Familie) became something of a cultural event, making its author one of Germany's most talked-about women of letters. Set in the first two decades of the Second German Reich, this story of a Prussian bureaucrat's daughter caught between conformity and rebellion struck at the core of the class that upheld the empire, revealing the hypocrisy and misery at the very heart of the bourgeois family. It recorded the conflicted and ultimately interminable adolescence of a middle-class girl who failed to fulfill the destiny prescribed for her by her gender and class, a young woman who, despite an incipient high-spiritedness and independence of mind, internalized the attitudes of her culture to the point of lethal self-censorship. Gabriele Reuter (1859-1941) began writing in her teens but did not experience a literary and commercial breakthrough until the publication of From a Good Family in 1895. This success enabled her finally to live as a freelance writer. In addition to a string of popular novels she wrote essays and sketches for German and Austrian newspapers; in the 1920s and 1930s she regularly reviewed German books for the New York Times.

      5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL.......2001-06-15

I had to read this book for my German studies class (Women and Family in the 19th Century). This was the book that moved me the most, enraged me the most and made me think the most. This book not only covers many of the historical events of the 19th century (such as the Prussian War, Hep-Hep riots, and Ernst Haeckel), but it also covers feminism--or rather the repression of feminism that the main character, Agathe, experiences.

Although this book was written in the 19th century, this novel feels quite modern (and is a good translation) in the thought and concepts of feminism and gender equality.

Be warned: this book, as a reflection of a woman's life in the 19th century, is not happy, but is extremely satisfying because it feels so real and is extremely thought provoking.

Do not be turned off by the cost of this book. It is worth the expense and is a good quality printing.

5 out of 5 stars Unique, interesting, and definitely worth reading!.......1999-10-17

We read Ms. Tatlock's manuscript for a class two years ago before it was published and it was excellent! This is a translation of a nineteenth-century German novel about a girl coming of age in a very repressive bourgeois culture. It was too controversial to be printed in English at the time, and went out of print in Germany when Hitler came into power. This book has a lot of history and a lot to teach, as well as being an interesting (although somewhat disturbing for those of us interested in gender equality) story. Highly recommended!
