Not Impressed.......2007-09-21
I don't usually care for James Patterson's stand-alone books, but since I enjoyed "Honeymoon," I thought I'd give this one a try.
All through the book I found it to be pretty boring -- it moved very slowly with really the same thing happening over and over. Then some small thing would happen which served no real purpose to further the book and which was really never explained and we'd go right back to Tom and Kate working on the case.
The ending was a surprise but unbelievable. And after it was sprung on us, it seemed to go on way too long until it was finally wrapped up.
In the future, I'll stick to the series.
The worst book I've ever read.......2007-09-20
If this book isn't the worst book I've ever read, I can't remember what was. I have read many of James Patterson's books and found this one beyond lacking. If you're looking for suspense and surprise, don't waste your time.
To start with, the writing was adolescent at best, and I think I actually said at one point "I could do better than this." The characters were hollow and poorly developed. The chapters were short to the point of brusqueness. There was no real attempt to make us truly understand the characters or their motivation.
As mysteries go, this wasn't terribly mysterious. A murder, a wrongfully accused black boy, an attorney and his former girlfriend defending him, even the curmudgeonly old friend were significantly less than original. The blatant name dropping of people like Steven Spielberg and George Clooney, to name but a few, was embarrassing.
As for the twist ending - it was completely unbelievable. When a character who is giving insight throughout the book, all thought and action giving no clue as to who this person was, it felt like the author was not just reaching, but leaping to the most ridiculous conclusion they could think up just to come up with a "surprise" ending.
I'm not sure what the co-auther, Peter De Jonge, brought to this book, since there was so little substance anyway, but next time James Patterson thinks about co-authoring a book with him, I suggest he think again.
Not sure why this was a "hot" summer read, best-seller, etc. and obviously the author doesn't care whether he's ridiculed as long as they are raking in the cash, but I only gave it one star because I had to give it something; otherwise, I'd give it no stars.
Extremely Good Read.......2007-09-18
Beach Road is a twisted, convoluted story as one would expect from James Patterson. It was a book that was hard to put down, and I have recommended it to many of my friends.
I have read many of James Patterson's books, and I consider this one of the best.
Fantastic Page Turner.......2007-09-18
If you like page-turning-thrillers, you will love this book.
I couldn't put it down!! The ending is fantastic... a twist you
will never guess ( unless many other formulaic novels, movies, tv shows, etc.)
BUY THIS BOOK & ENJOY!!!
Murder in The Hamptons .......2007-09-17
In the very exclusive section of Beach Road in East Hampton, New York live many rich folks that could care less about the rest of the world. Being white, most of these people don't normally see a black person in the area. One exception is a mansion owned by movie star T. Smitty Wilson. Wilson has built a regulation size basketball court for his friends to use. The friends vary from ex-NBA stars to current prospects for the pros or college, guys that are too good to play a regular street game of basketball. White or black, they play, many times against each other while letting tempers and pride flare. Wilson rarely was home but the stars along with other famous people such as movie stars were welcome to use his court anytime.
Dante Halleyville is one of the brightest prospects. He was expected to draw a huge bonus and salary at draft time. Dante was only in high school but could match the moves and actions of the best and was happy to demonstrate his high level of play. Tom Dunleavy was a former professional athlete that took full advantage of playing with "the best" on the court. Tom is now a defense attorney in the Hamptons. These games became so intense, sometimes causing tempers to flare many times.
One day during the brutal battles on the court a fight broke out. This was no ordinary fight so the others standing around watching should have tried to break it up, but they took no action. Michael Walker drove in for a basket and contact all around started more shoving and pushing. As Tom Dunleavy tried to break it up, Michael Walker appeared with a gun in his hand and pointed it at the side of one of the other boys' head. Tom did all he could to get Walker calmed down, finally being successful. Everyone then left the area thinking all was over.
When three of the boys that were on the court that day were found murdered execution style, everyone tried to figure the mess out. Then when Michael Walker was also found dead, the police knew they had a real tough investigation ahead. Immediately Dante Halleyville was arrested for the four murders. A gun was found with his fingerprints all over it. Dante's grandmother, Marie, knows Dante could not have killed anyone and Tom knows Dante was not guilty either. Tom, even though he is an attorney, is not very adept at criminal law and is reluctant to take Dante's case but Marie talks him into defending Dante.
An old flame of Tom's, Katherine Costello, is also an attorney that works for a large firm. She has a falling out with her employer and combines with Tom to defend Dante. The two of them start digging into all the evidence connected to both shootings. The chemistry gets very interesting between Tom and Kate at times, but their defense of Dante is first and foremost on their minds.
Several key police officers and detectives, the prosecuting attorneys, the Coroner, and other friends and enemies of Dante and the murdered boys, interact throughout the book. The action is fast and furious with many unexpected twists and turns. When you think you are at the end of the case you have another curve or two thrown at you. This is a very good story that picks up steam as it goes on. I will not tell any more so you can enjoy this good read.

An unbelievably close look at a child's feelings.......2007-06-23
In this book, Jenna Forrest has really captured a child's view of life in a way that brings us, as adults, back to our own childhood feelings and memories with a clarity most of us have likely lost.
As a parent, it is refreshing to realize how our own children may perceive things that to adults may seem ordinary or important. I hope to take this perspective into my daily interactions with understanding my own children.
A true story, Forrest bravely bares her soul in a memoir that is sure to touch every reader. There were many inspirational messages throughout the book, discovered by Forrest as she matured. My favorite being one that we all can and should bring to our own adult lives... "Being closer to people. I think that's what freedom really is... Realizing with relief that you are at last ready to show people your eyes instead of your back." I think it takes great courage to do this and I know I strive each day to live in just that way.
A fantastic read. Great front cover, but I don't think the description on the back cover does justice to the depth of the story.
Get it. Read it. It was great.
Powerful words.......2007-06-06
This commanding true narrative leaves you hanging onto every word. The author's writing style creates powerful images for the reader, as if you are struggling right along side this young girl.
An excellent read!!.......2007-06-06
I thought this was a great book. So many times, it's so easy to remember childhood as an easy time when all anyone had to do was play and had no responsibilities. Often we forget that childhood is actually a
very tough, confusing time for anyone, especially a deeply emotional and sensitive kid like Jenna. In the book, Jenna Forrest vividly explores the fears, love, anxiety, and wonder of childhood not through the filter of an adult looking back, but through the wide-open eyes of a child. And she nails it. The sights and smells of the world of a child are so real and tangible you feel like you're really living in Jenna's skin. I recommend this book for anyone who was ever a child (and to anyone who ever wants to be a parent.) There are an amazing number of life lessons here, but the tone is never pandering or didactic. She just let's the world unfold and allows us an intimate peek into a time of life that most of us have boxed up and long forgotten.

Customer Reviews:
a disappointment!.......2006-02-23
If you're looking for a great map of small sections of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, buy this. If you're looking for a map of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, don't! The map is described as Virginia Beach/Norfolk City Streets and Metro Roads. What it doesn't say anywhere is this: The maps cover downtown Norfolk and from from the end of I-564 on the west to I-64 as the east border of the map including most of the airport. North to south, it includes the Chesapeake Bay to south of the Elizabeth River. It also covers Virginia Beach east of US 13 (doesn't include it though) to the shore. North to south, it includes Cape Henry to Oceana Naval Air Station. It leaves out everything inbetween including most of Little Creek--almost six miles between the two maps. No good for those of us going to Little Creek which is part of Virginia Beach.

Murder in E Minor.......2004-06-12
"Murder in E Minor" is the first Nero Wolfe novel written by Robert Goldsborough, who continues the famous series created by Rex Stout. The book begins in 1977, two years since Stout's last novel "A Family Affair" was published. Nero Wolfe has not taken a case since then and Archie wonders if he will ever work again. Maria Radovich asks Wolfe's help in finding who is sending her uncle Milan Stevens, the conductor of the New York Symphony, threatening notes. Wolfe agrees to take the case because he knows Milan Stevens as Milos Stefanovic, the man who saved Wolfe's life in Montenegro many years ago. Before Wolfe makes much progress on the case, Milan Stevens is found murdered in his apartment. Gerald Milner, Maria's lover, is charged with murder because he was seen leaving Stevens' apartment the night of the murder. Wolfe believes he is innocent and solves the case. I read that Goldsborough wrote this for his mother who wanted "one more Nero Wolfe" story. I think he does a fantastic job of creating the atmosphere of the brownstone. All the Stout regulars are there such as Inspector Cramer, Fritz, Fred Durkin, and Saul Panzer. "Murder in E Minor" is a very good novel.
A conductor who strikes the wrong note with the orchestra.......2002-11-25
If you aren't already familiar with Archie Goodwin and his employer, Nero Wolfe, this is the wrong place to start, even though it's a good book. Start with one of Rex Stout's original stories instead - go on, shoo. In particular, _A Family Affair_, Stout's final Wolfe novel, lays the groundwork for this book. While one *could* read the two books out of order, _Murder in E Minor_ by necessity gives away the ending of its predecessor. I have avoided giving major spoilers for _A Family Affair_ in this review, but the book itself does so in the first chapter.
Goldsborough makes one deliberate departure from Rex Stout's template for a Nero Wolfe mystery: this story is not set in 1986, when it was first published, but in November 1977, only two years after the end of _A Family Affair_. (Archie provides a forward: Wolfe saw this case as a personal matter, inappropriate for publication, and since he signs Archie's paychecks, Archie went along. Wolfe only gave in after being worn down by much badgering.) _Murder in E Minor_ was written originally for Goldsborough's mother, who missed her yearly Nero Wolfe fix, so Goldsborough otherwise has tried as far as possible to match Rex Stout's storytelling.
As those who have read _A Family Affair_ already know, Wolfe and Archie both had a rough time in that case, although the District Attorney reinstated their P.I. licenses shortly after its conclusion. Since then, Wolfe has not merely resisted going back to work - that would be normal - but has 'withdrawn from practice'. The brownstone is operating on a combination of Wolfe's investments and on previously earned fees being paid in installments. (Fritz's morale, of course, is at an all-time low.) Archie has no lever to get Wolfe to take his brain out of deep freeze...until Maria Radovich requests an appointment.
Archie at first thinks that Maria's mention of her uncle's long-ago acquaintance with Wolfe in Montenegro is a put-up job to get in the door, but Archie admires ingenuity and is willing to at least give her a hearing himself. (And Milan Stevens/Milos Stefanovic *is* receiving anonymous death threats, and Lily Rowan's taken Archie to the New York Symphony enough that the music director's name is familiar.) But Maria has a photograph to back up her story - a group photo including Milos, Wolfe, and Marko Vukcic: a memento of Wolfe's freedom-fighting youth.
Archie, of course, plants the photo in Wolfe's incoming mail and awaits developments, which are not slow in coming. :) Milos and Wolfe were once close friends, and although the friendship has withered and they haven't spoken for decades, Wolfe still feels a debt: Milos once saved his life.
In the course of peeling open the case - which naturally flowers into a murder investigation in the fullness of time - the recurring characters are deployed well. Lon Cohen dines at the brownstone, providing background on the symphony - Milos, who was hired as an antidote to a string of weak conductors, hasn't achieved the desired results: the orchestra's more disciplined, but at the cost of great tension and infighting, so the quality of performance has declined. Rowcliff, unfortunately, runs the crime scene - his clash with Archie isn't *the* most memorable, but leads to Cramer's first visit of the story, which *is* memorable. Various members of Archie's regular poker game appear later, when Wolfe takes exception to the homicide squad's choice of suspect. Lily Rowan not only appears - she pitches in.
Not bad for a Continuation first attempt.......2001-09-02
Two years after the sad events in A Family Affair, Wolfe is still "withdrawn from practice." But then the grand-niece of Milos Stefanovic, one of Wolfe's old guerrilla band from Montenegro, arranges to see Archie Goodwin. She brings news that not only is Stefanovic still alive, but has been conducting the New York Symphony under the name of Milan Stevens for the last two years. And, he has begun receiving death threats. When the inevitable murder finally happens (as you knew it would), once again Wolfe is forced to "go to work" and Archie renews his position as a "man of action".
All the old favorite characters are here, with one exception of course. The story is good as is the style but, since this is a Nero Wolfe continuation story from the Rex Stout books, it also doesn't ring quite true. I think where Mr. Goldsborough falls down is that he hasn't yet learned Mr. Stout's economic usage of words. Some of the catch phrases are almost lifted right out of earlier books while others seem to have been a bit more contrived. They're close, but no cigar.
Still, it's nice to revisit the old brownstone again, and Mr. Goldsborough does manage to capture the essence of what we love most about a Nero Wolfe mystery.
Murder in E Minor.......2001-06-12
Robert Goldsborough has captured most of the elements necessary to write a good Nero Wolfe book. The dialog between Archie and Nero is not up to Rex Stout's standards, but it's not bad. All the regular characters show up as scheduled, and the plot is pretty good, though a bit contrived in its motive for murder. Certainly a good read for any Wolfe fan who is missing their "favorite fatty."
Its Hard Following a Legend.........2001-03-18
Rex Stout was a legend. His Nero Wolfe books are among the best in Detective Fiction. Robert Goldsborough did an admirable job in trying to live up to Stout's traditions. The first of these, Murder in E flat, with minor exceptions would have fit in rather well with the middle of the road caliber Rex Stout novels.. and that is high praise indeed.
