Book Description

Unmarried, thirty-year-old Sophy Metcalfe told a little white he to soothe her nagging mother. The white lies name was "Dominic," the ideal boyfriend: charming, successful, the kind of prospective son-in-law that would make any mother proud. But now that Sophy's thin and beautiful sister, Belinda, is getting married, Dominic is going to have to make an appearance in the flesh -- which should be a pretty neat trick ... since the genuine article vanished from Sophy's life after a single, singularly unmemorable evening. So she resorts to a very drastic measure -- aka Josh Carmichael, the escort she hires at the very last minute, sight unseen.

But the trouble with white lies is that they tend to multiply. The trouble with rugged, too-sexy, and independent Josh is ... well, that Sophy's actually beginning to like him! Even if they make it through the Wedding Day from Hell together -- with its new intrigues, old flames, and all-too-familiar faces -- there's the night that follows... and, of course, the morning after. And that could end up being the biggest trouble of all!

A hip, witty, and freshly fantastic delight, Asking for Trouble is the most hilarious and knowing novel to make the scene since Bridget Jones first set pen to paper to record her most intimate innermost thoughts.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Trouble with This Novel.......2007-05-07

Sophy Metcalfe's mother has a 1950's mentality; she wants Sophy to marry. Without building on the relationship between mother and daughter, Ms. Young, the author, weaves her story.

Sophy finds Josh Carmichael aka "Dominic" from an escort service. To appease her mother, she passes him off as her beloved. What unfolds is all too predictable. This might not have been a dreadful book if it wasn't so reminiscent of Bridgette Jones' Diary. Bridgette had a weight problem; Sophy has a weight problem. Bridgette craves cigarettes ("fags"); Sophy craves cigarettes ("fags"). Bridgette is jilted by her former lover; Sophy is jilted by her former lover.

What is missing is originality and prose so witty, we can't stop laughing. If you're looking for a refreshingly comical novel, this isn't it. Re-read either of the two Bridgette novels or try Susan Elizabeth Phillips for a true romantic comedy extravaganza.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie.......2006-08-02

I read this long before it was thought to be a movie - so sight unseen (the movie that is), a great read and seriously funny! MUST READ FIRST and hopefully, you and I won't be disappointed by the movie as I know it can't get the entire point across!

3 out of 5 stars Better to see the movie.......2006-06-26

As an English as second language reader, this book is simple and easy to read. Elisabeth Young really presents a simple, enjoyable and can not wait to the end book.

I have seen the movie, and I think contain between movie and book are not the same. However, both have own attention point.
I bought the book because I have seen the movie earlier.
For me, I still prefer the movie. Maybe if I read the book first, my opinion can be different.

5 out of 5 stars A great light read!.......2006-04-12

I fell in love with The Wedding Date! When I heard it was based on a book, I went out and bought it right away!
I loved this book just as much as the movie! It wasn't anything like the movie except for the hiring-an-escort-to-take-to-your-sister's-wedding part. Their were other great characters and a lot of funny moments. When you are a busy mom like me with a stressful job, its nice to escape into a light-hearted story like this one.

5 out of 5 stars Love For Hire.......2006-03-17

I really loved this book. If you're expecting the same story as in "The Wedding Date," which was loosly based on this book, don't worry. You can enjoy both without any plot spoilers! Elizabeth Young makes you laugh out loud as you follow a "desperate" young woman on her quest for a decent date to her sister's wedding. There are twists and turns that all lead to belly laughs and deep sighs! What a great story!

4 out of 5 stars In some ways better than the movie.......2007-09-06

This was my first read by Elizabeth Young. Really enjoyed it. There's way more to the story than what was in the movie, the Wedding Date. But hey, let's not discount that scene against the car with Dermot Mulroney. As soon as I get a chance I will read another Elizabeth Young book.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Adventure in a Claustrophobic Environment!.......2007-03-12

I'm not finished reading the book, but I already love it! It is really fun and witty and if you've ever seen the movie, it's so much different! It's worth it though - a perfect story idea! Brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2007-01-14

I loved reading this book. It's light and fun with great humor! You'll be laughing as you read with some of the wacky and real characters.

5 out of 5 stars Made into a Movie.......2006-12-01

This book was made into the movie "The Wedding Date" with Debra Messing as the delightfully sarcastic Sophy who has to produce a charming, successful, ideal boyfriend to show up with at the wedding of Sophy's "perfect" sister Belinda.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Confusing.......2007-05-31

I'm not really sure how to rate this. One one hand the author has amazing talent, the pacing is great, the characters feel real, and the plot moves fast. On the other hand the particular bent of the characters is difficult to grasp for me.

To be clear Beth's fantasies center entirely around her humiliation. From reading other reviews I assumed it was more dominance, but it's actually straight humiliation.

Hanging curtains she begins a strip-off with a man across the street who essentially begins stalking her. Confused and crazed with lust she exhanges phone fantasies with Ilya who makes it clear he doesn't care about last names, personal histories, or family.

Beth begins to make asignations with Ilya where she's used as a table, [...] on, videotaped without her knowledge, and driven to have sex with strangers. Admitedly the [...] scenes were so disinteresting I didn't read the last two where Beth is passed aroundd a group of thugs as payment for trouble Ilya is in and then she performs a sex act on stage at her club for some of those thugs.

Many people are disturbed by the "rape" scene (read attempted rape scene) but it's easy to see coming. Ilya is a man who truly doesn't respect Beth in the least, doesn't even like her, and he does ominously tell her earlier "One day I'm going to rape you."

So for the sex I'd say pass unless humilation is your thing, but for the plot and writing it was good. Just what Ilya does for a living is a good mystery, and you find yourself rooting for Beth to find some self-respect. However if you pay attention to Ilya and Beth's characters you'll know what the outcome will be.

Unless you're into humilaition I'd say skip this, but if that's your bent do not miss this book.

5 out of 5 stars fine erotic romance .......2006-12-29

Thirty years old bar manager Beth Bradshaw moves to Brighton, England where she looks out her window while hanging up her curtains to observe a stranger mimic her motions. Irate, she flashes him with her boobs, feeling like an amazon until she calms down and thinks she is just Beth not a warrior woman ready to battle a pervert. Ilya calls her to welcome her to the neighborhood asking her if she came earlier when the mime was there.

Unable to stop herself, Beth tells her darkest fantasies to Ilya, which excites him too. They agree to fulfill her fantasies with him sexually humiliating her forcing her to act like a slut. The only stipulations are that this is a sex only tryst with no other binds except ties to a bedpost and no rape; although she claims that is her deepest desire as she wants to be the victim of the roughest sex short of physical injury. Finally they agree that if things get out of hand, a safe word will end the encounter and relationship. However Beth can't just say no, as she has become addicted to these abusive sexual encounters until Ilya decides he needs to use his submissive to help him with his past that has arrived to bother him.

Living up to its title, readers know from the first confrontation that Beth is ASKING FOR TROUBLE when she confides in the enigmatic Ilya. She is a fascinating protagonist as her needs affirm how much the mind plays in sexual encounters. Ilya is much more complex as the audience will continually wonder what he truly wants from Beth besides a permanent hard-on. Fans of erotic romance will appreciate this fine tale while pondering is it worth the risk?

5 out of 5 stars NOT a silly piece of sex fluff.......2005-06-04

The book starts when Beth (the heroine), moves into her new flat in the grungy working class, avant-garde, seaside neighborhood town of Brighton, England. While putting up curtains, she notices a strange man (Ilya, the hero of the story) in the flats across the street staring at her from his window mocking her every move. When the annoyed Beth decides to flash the stranger, she's surprised by his response. Scared and a bit shaken by his actions she decides it wasn't the best move for a woman living alone. Then the phone rings... Guess who?... Right from the start I knew I was going to like Beth and I was going to like this very realistic psychotically dark & dangerous, sexual thriller.

30 year old Beth, not looking for a serious relationship at the moment (she's busy managing a trendy, fashionable bar & enjoying a normal single life) finds her self attracted to the handsome, but mysterious Ilya. After their first intimate (and slightly scary) encounter Beth reveals her deepest darkest fantasies to Ilya. They both agree it might be fun to meet on occasions to fulfill Beth's fantasies with no strings attached. Beth's fantasies roughly have to do with being made to do sexually degrading things and treated like a sleazy slut - nasty, hot, hard sex that involves multiple male partners, being sexually dominated and sometimes rape. However, Beth makes it clear from the start that the rape fantasy wouldn't be part of the game as it should stay a fantasy... Will Ilya play fair? Beth and Ilya agree if they should find the game, at any point, boring or going too far, they are to say the safe word and the game ends immediately and the relationship stops. Beth believes she's the one in control in the beginning (remember, she can stop it any time with one word) but Beth becomes dangerously addicted to these games and especially addicted to Ilya. Beth knows Ilya also has the option to stop the madness and she finds her self less and less willing or unable to extricate her self. She keeps Ilya and their dirty little sex games a secret. Even her best friends and her work mates know nothing about either. Soon the games get more and more hazardous and degrading as Ilya's shadowy past catches up with him and he's determined to use Beth. There is one scene where Beth is called to Ilya's rundown bed & breakfast hotel - it was frightening and I wasn't sure I would be able to read it through...*panting* That was only one of many intense scene in this deliciously brilliant nervy novel. At times I wanted to reach into the book and take Beth by the shoulders and scream, stop it now before it's too late. But, how do you stop yourself when a gorgeous, complicated, mysterious man takes your most depraved sexual secret fantasies and makes them real, exciting and dangerous.

Kristina Lloyd had me believing these characters and their situations were REAL. I mean sometimes I wonder if it isn't based on someone's true experience. It certainly had that element of truth, and the characters could easily be people you meet everyday at work, on the street or in a pub. Beth's reactions were honest and true to most of the scenarios in the book. It's the reactions and emotions I'd expect from a real live woman to have - not like most Black Lace heroines. Ilya is more complicated, but that is what is so wonderful about his persona. He was the perfect bloke to carry out these bold acts. Lloyd had this reader (me) and Beth asking the question - who is Ilya. Is sexy, handsome, macho, working class Ilya involved in illegal activities? Is he running from something or someone? How dangerous is he, and why won't he tell Beth anything about his work, friends or life in general. The secrets, the fantasies, the lies, the danger and the often explosive sex scenes make this one great piece of exciting erotic literature - in fact I thought this book would work even in the mainstream, not just erotica. Yes, the sex scenes were explosive and HOT, but it's not just the sex that keeps this wonderful story going... It's the element of danger too. So far after reading, many, many Black Lace novels, "Asking For Trouble" is the one that stood out from the rest and in my opinion one of the best. It's not like the other Black Lace books... It's more intense, personal and believable. Kristina, give us more, pleeease...

5 out of 5 stars Hot and Steamy, yet down right raunchy.......2003-01-22

My copy of this book has pages marked, the spine is well creased, and looks at least five years old. But it's not. in fact, i bought it two months ago. Kristina did a good job of weaving some of our raunchier fantasies, the ones you don't share with a soul, into steamy, passionate couplings between Beth (the main character) and Ilya, the dark handsome stranger. Yes, it si degrading, and yes it took my run of the mill darker fantasies, much further than I would even think about, but those scenes left you feeling connected to Beth, made you feel like you endured the humiliation, degradation. Not for the faint hearted, but definietly for the open minded. An excellent read that I just can't get enough of.

5 out of 5 stars Well researched........2001-04-25

This book could well be an advert from the Brighton Tourist Board. Like Brighton Rock by Graham Greene it weaves its tale around the wonderfully decedant south coast resort. I feel Kristina has written largly from her own experiences in this work as it is so vividly and romantically recalled. Well written and in the style of Stella Black, Deborah Addington and Trezza Azzapardia. A truely magical novel.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but could have been better.......2007-08-19

This is a great series, but I (like the other reviewer) felt that it really lacked a great ending. For the most part, everything in this volume has an ending, although there are one or two parts that are left open (maybe for a sequel later on down the road?).

The biggest flaw I would say that it had, other than the fizzle ending, would be that at times the plot seemed a little disjointed & jumped from plot point to plot point. The pairings in this volume were forshadowed, but I would have liked there to be a bit more storytelling.

    3 out of 5 stars eh?.......2007-07-30

I love Gloom cookie. But this volume was a little dissapointing. The other books are much better. Volume 5 predomiantly fixates on Vermillion and Moon Raven. I was expecting more of a "bang" considering it was the last book. It was a quick read. I read it during work for about an hour to kill time. I'll keep it though, but i doubt i'll ever read it again. Like i said... quite dissapointing...

But i did enjoy the graphics. Sebastion looked awesomer than ever!

3 out of 5 stars Country house murder just after WWII.......2002-10-28

WWII has ended at last, and Chief Detective-Inspector Alleyn is coming home from his wartime work on the far side of the world. His wife Troy, free of her wartime work of mapmaking, takes on a portrait-painting job in the country to pass the last 3 weeks before Alleyn's return. Some realistic character development is presented throughout the story, as both Alleyn and Troy are nervous about their relationship after more than 3 years of enforced separation.

Troy is to paint Sir Henry Ancred in the character of Macbeth. (Troy asks him about the superstition that it's an unlucky play - while he avoids speaking the name, he says it was far from unlucky for *him*.) Sir Henry is 75, handsome, a cooperative sitter - and lively, as the frequent interfamily bouts of temperament, and his recently-installed young mistress (or fiancee?) Sonia Orrincourt, bear witness. Most of Sir Henry's family - those not still on active military service - live in the Ancred mansion, and generally make a point of demonstrating how highly-strung they are. They've suspended their normal feuds to ally against Sonia. Sir Henry keeps matters stirred up, having not only his own formidable artistic temperament, but indulging a rich oldster's hobby of revising his will at regular intervals - and publicly presenting Sonia with valuable family jewelry soothes no feathers.

Sir Henry's 10-year-old grandaughter Patricia, is currently out of favor due to a rash of crude practical jokes - but did an elder relative engineer them to discredit her? Fenella and Paul, as distant cousins, want to marry, over the old man's objections. How much would they - or their parents on their behalf - want to secure their inheritance? Cedric, as next in line to the title (and with an overdone effeminate manner, a stock figure in Marsh's work) is a disappointment to his grandsire, and may be cut to the bare bones of the entailed estate now that Sir Henry might remarry. In contrast to the usual stereotype, Sonia is more a more sympathetic character than most of the family - no pretentions as an actress or a person, making a refreshing change from most of the Ancreds.

On the evening of Sir Henry's birthday, everything comes together: Alleyn is due back, Troy's painting is complete, Sir Henry's solicitor is present to make a new will - and sure enough, one of the party is found dead in suspicious circumstances. Alleyn must finally face his personal problem with keeping Troy and his work in separate compartments. Inspector Fox, once again, is shown to be a full partner on the police team, not merely a sidekick and foil.

3 out of 5 stars From a first time Marsh reader.......2002-09-17

As a fan of Dorothy L. Sayers and Agatha Christie, I was disappointed with the beginnings in Final Curtain. Perhaps it is because this is the first time I read Ngaio Marsh.

Sayers and Christie were skilled in narrating upper British class society in a very comfortable and convincing manner. Marsh on the other hand, though her characters were supposed to be British, did not realistically convey her portrayal of the upper-class Ancred family from a native's perspectives. In this aspect, it was unfortunate for Marsh that she was a New Zealander and a first time reader like myself would conclude that was at least partially responsible for her characters not being genuinely British enough.

The story began with Mrs Alleyn, nee Troy, wife of Inspector Alleyn who was one of Marsh primary detective character, being commissioned to paint a portrait of Sir Henry Ancred, an aristocrat equally proud of his background in the dramatic arts.

Arriving at the manor of the baronet, Troy discovered a menagerie of Andreds, by blood and by law, in a highly tensed family situation. While tension was a familiar atmosphere in a family with most members from theatrical background, the severity increased significantly with the widowed Sir Henry being taken by third-rate actress Sonia Orrincourt, and therefore placing the inheritance of his children and grandchildren at risk.

Despite a series of practical pranks and family bombshells, Troy managed to complete the portrait, just before the subject was found dead several hours later.

No foul play was suspected at that time, and Troy resumed her life, meeting with her husband who had been away for nearly two years. For Marsh fans, this would be a significant reunion, and Marsh did not disappoint them by being economical with the details, I suspect.

Shortly after that though, the focus returned to the Ancreds whom all except Sonia received anonymous letters saying the death of Sir Henry was murdered contrived by the one who benefitted the most. Inspector Alleyn was charged with sorting through the menagerie in the Ancred household, from the widowed daughter-in-law who kept the house, to the love-struck first cousins, to the precocious granddaughter, a wide range of colourful characters who couldn't seem to stop being dramatic off stage.

The mystery itself was rather disappointing. Agatha Christie's Poirot would lament at the lack of pattern. However, a positive point to be made was Marsh did not have her detective over-analyse the suspects as Christie was sometimes prone to do.

          4 out of 5 stars Encore!.......2000-11-27

A very good big-family-run-by-hated-rich-old-patriarch mystery, complete with a gloomy old house and lots of poison. Has one of Marsh's engaging "mystery queens." While stereotypical, these characters are always amusing and witty, if nasty as well. Unlike Christie, Marsh often alluded to homosexuality in her books. Lots of Troy, which will be a plus or a minus depending on how you feel about her.

4 out of 5 stars Good portrait of a dysfunctional family.......2000-07-28

Troy Alleyn is commissioned to paint a portrait of the great actor Sir Henry Ancred. Though thanks to journalist/friend Nigel Bathgate she has some idea of what's in store for her, nothing fully prepares her for the amount of in-fighting, jealousy and histrionics the Ancred family can provide. Against this backdrop, Troy is reunited with her husband, Inspector Alleyn, who has been away on CID business for a couple of years. This book is one of the more interesting novels, in that: A) You get to see the beginning of the mystery from Troy's point of view. B)Marsh really knows how to write about awkward reunions and C) You get to see something of the artist's process (not surprising, I suppose, since Marsh herself painted). Another good read by Marsh.

          3 out of 5 stars WWII Homecoming.......2000-04-24

While waiting for her husband to return from the war after too long apart, Agatha Troy accepts a commission to paint the eccentric actor Sir Henry Ancred at his family home Ancreton.

While the book has many strong points, the plot becomes exceedingly muddled at the end, and I'm not sure that Troy by herself is strong enough to carry a mystery novel on her own as a central character. Even though Alleyn appears near the end, he's not involved for long enough to provide his typical witty effect.

On the other hand, the characters here are among her most vivid-- including ringworm-ridden Panty and the smarmy Cedric. For stronger Marsh I'd recommend Artists in Crime, Death and the Dancing Footman, or Died in the Wool.

4 out of 5 stars Final Curtain a book for those who loved and love the movies.......1999-04-21

In reading Final Curtain I found myself back in the Hollywood of yesteryear with those famous names and people who made HOLLYWOOD and its movies great. I enjoyed the book immensely,Final Curtain is not just a book about death and gravestones, but about the people who gave and used their various talents to entertain.

2 out of 5 stars The book was interest, but contained many inaccuracies........1998-10-30

The book contains many interesting tidbits on famous dead movie stars, but it full of glaring mistakes. For example, in one section on William Randolph Hearst his wife is named as Millicent. However, in the section on Marion Davies his wife is named Pheobe, who is actually his mother. I have found inaccurate dates and locations. One paragraph will contradict another. The amount of errors makes the whole book suspect. Also, directions to some of the stars final resting places is detailed and others not all. For a serious Thantologist, I would only recommend this book for entertainment value.

          3 out of 5 stars A so-so book.......1998-06-02

This book has some good stories in it but as far as grave hunting goes, it's not very complete. It's okay to have for entertainment but not as a reference book.

5 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it........1999-11-02

This is the ultimate book of celebrity death. Anyone who has passed away and enjoyed 15 minutes of celebrity (of the theatrical kind)has made it here. There is no such thing such as a quick look/see. Every time I look at this book I find that 2 or 3 hours have flashed by. If you have a modest interest in cemeteries, death, or whatever-became-of you'll find your questions answered here. It is superbly organized and each new edition provides new information (and lots of it).

5 out of 5 stars A Devilish Delight For All Cemetery History Buffs!.......1999-11-01

I have been purchasing Final Curtain since 1986 and am anxiously awaiting edition #10. I have also purchased the book as gifts for many friends who have the same interests. One of the critics wrote "causes of death are generic or missing". Until recently doctors could list heart attack, seizure, tumor, etc in a generic manner. Some states may still allow this but in California all underlying causes of death must be totally explained with a clinical type diagnosis on one to four lines on the death certificate. Although a public record it's not that easy to attain one. You do have to have some kind of need to know. I love the idea of listing the status of the person such as star, character actor, bit player, etc. Photos would be divine but probably cost prohibitive. My Final Curtain has accompanied on many journeys in my quest for cemetery history knowledge. The subject is "dark" however this book is absolutely fantastic! 2 out of 5 stars Lots of superficial information which should include more........1999-09-08

Lots of names in this book, most I have no clue who they are. Tony Williams? Rolf Bjorling? Stephen Burks? I think another column explaining who these people are would wrap this book up nicely. Also, too many empty or generic causes of death. A little research would fill in these blanks (death cirtificates are public information).

          5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD.......1999-07-07

i would like to see pictures of each of the actors so that I could put the name with a picture. There are names that are familiar but I can't put a face to it. Also the picture you show as Ralph byrd is not him. thank you for a wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars Very few errors........1999-05-19

An excellent source for cemetary buffs with only a few "errors." The updates are timely. Could improve with maps of the major cemetaries. Perhaps should use thinner gauge paper and different binding...cracks too easily.

              Book Description

Armageddon. Judgment Day. Apocalypse. You're curious about the “end times,” but isn't the Bible's Book of Revelation a little too weird to understand? Your world is a topsy-turvy mix of social strife, political controversy, natural disasters, and terrorism. It's easy to feel threatened and anxious about life's challenges and opportunities. Yet Revelation provides solid answers to those who choose to look. Authors Calaway and Ledford have managed to tame some of Revelation's fear factor and provide a fast-paced script to its mysterious characters and plot. Still, the meat of the Revelation message (and hope for the future) comes through. Note: Designed expressly for the teens themselves, Operation Revelation's evangelistic appeal makes it ideal not only for teenaged Christians (including those new to the faith), but also any who are seeking spiritual roots. (P.S. The book does include a leader's guide so that the material can be taught as a youth study if desired.)

I've read all six of the Danielle Ross Mysteries and am glad to see them re-releasing them (although apparently under new titles). Danielle (Dani) Ross is a modern day sleuth who faces all the things we career women face in the sometimes "man's world" of business, without losing herself. Gilbert Morris is an entertaining writer of good mysteries that keep you guessing right to the end! I highly recommend the series, and I hope Mr. Morris continues to write a LOT more in this series.
