SUPER mystery!.......2007-08-28
Mark Mills did an outstanding job on this, his first novel. I have also read the Savage Garden and it is good, but doesn't hold a candle to this one! One of the best novels I've read in a long time. Memorable and satisfying! EXCELLENT!
Atmospheric Novel.......2007-03-17
In 1947 a young, rich woman is found in a fisherman's net. Her death is first considered accidental however, Tom Hollis a dective investigates further. Dectective Hollis and the fisherman Conrad who found the body are the maine charcters in the novel. The story is able convey what the eastern part of Long Island was like over 50 years ageo. Conrad is a sympathtic character and the story moves unfolds most of the time with a good pace. I liked it .B+ for crime genre.
Amagansett, by Mark Mills.......2006-09-23
In post World War II America, the shores of Amagansett - a region along the Long Island coastline - is a place sharply divided between the local fisherman trolling the waters of the Atlantic for a living and the wealthy, who come there during the summer to play on huge resorts and summer homes.
Privileged businessmen from "out of town" crowd the shores on the weekends, fishing for sport, jeopardizing the livelihood of fishermen who have worked these waters for generations.
The rich and wealthy ignore those beneath them; dismissing the lower-class anglers who ironically provide them with their high class caviar, seafood, and take them on boating adventures to fish for everything from swordfish to stripped bass. The lower-class themselves live their lives as best they can, knowing full well a hard truth: you can't fight the rich.
One morning, everything changes when Conrad Labarde, a third-generation fisherman pulls in his nets, finding a beautiful, blond haired woman entangled among the fish and seaweed, dead. She's not just any woman, however - she's Lillian Wallace, daughter of Manfred Wallace, powerful businessman, summer-time resident of Amagansett.
Deputy Chief of Police Tom Hollis is faced with an "open and shut" case of "death due to misadventure" - Lillian went swimming where she shouldn't have and drowned - but something nags at the back of his mind, and he's unable to let the case rest. Aware that heeding this "nagging" is one of the prime reasons the NYPD "put him out to pasture" to Amagansett in the first place, Hollis probes deeper into the mystery of Lillian Wallace's death and the taciturn, mysterious Conrad Labarde - a closed-mouthed veteran of the war who seems to know more than he's telling.
This is Mark Mill's first novel, and it is an astounding piece of literary fiction, blending character studies with a murder mystery effortlessly. Its narrative - set in the late forties after World War II - is authentic, and Mills reveals his secrets slowly, along the way. Though the victim and the perpetrator are fairly easy to divine, the true crime is hidden under layers of clues and plotlines.
He smoothly matches illuminating flashbacks with the present-time narrative, and creates compelling characters in Hollis and Labarde. The pace of the novel is smooth at times, crashing at others - almost mimicking the ebb and flow of ocean tides themselves.
The novel gets a little tawdry near the end; early on, romantic encounters between key characters were plot-necessary and tasteful, but the bedroom action becomes a little "fast and furious" towards the end - almost as if Mills surrendered to the compulsion to be a little "naughty" as he was writing.
Overall, it's a solid piece of fiction from a promising new writer. It's a period-piece true to its era, while having a pull that will attract readers from any generation.

Brilliant Debut Novel.......2006-08-05
1947. East Hampton, NY. Conrad Labarde, a Basque immigrant fisherman, finds a dead woman in his seine. Another drowning? But Lillian Wallace swam every day. Her room wasn't slept in, but the toilet seat's up. And why was she wearing pearl earrings? She never wore them when she swam. What's wrong here?
So begins a mystery unique, deep and textured. Conrad and Tom Hollis, Deputy Chief, are unlikely allies, but they appear to be the only ones who think the tragic drowning of Lillian Wallace may have been something more than a sad but not uncommon summer's misadventure. And they're both loners; they don't know or trust each other. So why are they being pressured to leave the death alone? Hollis hates his job and wants to split. Conrad is just surviving. He's a war hero coping with trauma: family sadness, the loss of love, and post-trauma stress disorder. What do these men have in common? Only a sense that something's wrong with the Lillian Wallace picture, and it must be made right. The smell of money pollutes the air. Blue fins run.
Mark Mills has written a stellar novel: more than a mystery, literary, but going someplace. Just don't ask me to pronounce the title. Mills' descriptions of the deceptive seas, the fine points of commercial fishing, and the struggles of local fishing families living like crabs in the bolt-holes, pockets and hard-up interiors of the developing post-war East Hampton are full and textured. East Hampton is both a sea-based rural community, where life is hard and values are simple and well-learned, and a playground for the rich and powerful, where rules bend under the weight of money. How does the murder of Lillian Wallace span this expanding culture chasm?
You won't soon be lending "Amagansett."
If you liked House of Sand and Fog you will love Amagansett.......2006-07-01
Amagansett is an elegantly written tale of love and murder in a 1947 backwater town at the beginning of changing from fishing village and smugglers cove to resort for the rich.
Written in an authentic voice of the area Amagansett accurately expresses the tensions between the locals and the summer people. There is much history here as well; Mr. Mills has clearly done his homework on the south shore of Long Island, NY.
Mills explains how the rich almost always get their way and how much courage and intelligence it takes to face them down.
This is a beautifuly crafted piece of literature and a haunting page turner of a story.
Book Description
Since 1990, Scott Chaskey has worked as a land steward and farmer for the Peconic Land Trust at Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett, New York, an organic community farm. Over the years, he has recorded his meditations on weather, wildlife, soil, seed, root, plant, and flower, and in This Common Ground, he has organized some of these reflections season by season, through the course of one year on the farm. Chaskey's observations reflect a doer's respect for the rhetoric of the fields and a firsthand knowledge of the interdependence of soils, plants, animals, and humans. His contagious sense of wonder and artistic sensibility illustrate why planting and reaping are such an important part of what defines the human community and the human condition.
Like Joan Gussow's This Organic Life or Verlyn Klinkenborg's The Rural Life, this inspirational evocation of a life spent working the earth is certain to become a classic of nature writing, as well as appealing to today's burgeoning organic lifestyle audience.
Customer Reviews:
Down to the earth gardener.......2006-03-21
This book was a very sweet description of life at a organic farm. It brought to life ideas and processes that must happen every year or helpful hints on what makes this gardening adventure easier. You can feel the joy and effort he has put into the farm and also the challenges. He gives a glimpse of the organic association, and what it means to be organic. Chaskey generously lets us learn from his mistakes. The wholesome roots of farming are embraced by this book, I loved it.
Love and Frustration on an Organic Farm.......2005-06-23
A story of love and frustration in building a farm that grows products organically.
It's clear that the love drives Mr. Chaskey to farming, watching things grow, watching the seasons turn. The poet in him makes his prose read like this love -- 'Last night our fields felt the first light touch of Jack Frost.'
The frustration also comes through, especially as he talks about new gtovernment rules -- To qualify as organic compost must be turned a total of five times within a fifteen-day period and you must prove that the temperature inside the pile was between 131 to 170 degrees Fahrenheit for the period. --Who turns compost every three days.
This book is the story of the changing seasons on an organic farm in New York. It is not an instruction book on farming, it is an ode to organic farming.
This Common Ground : Seasons on an Organic Farm.......2005-05-09
Farmer and Poet Scott Chaskey gives us this wonderful work following his journey on his South Fork farm for a year. Follow Chaskey through the spring, summer, autumn, and Winter as he learns and explores life on this organic farm. This book appeals to the senses and to the heart. ****

Wonderful recipes from the now long-closed take-out, THE STORE in Amagansett, owned by famous cookery writer Bert Greene before he became well known as a writer. Lots of delicious food and wit, served up with Bert Greenes' typical joie de vivre and including tibits of info about famous and not so famous customers such as Lee Radziwill, Leonard Bernstein and Barbara Streisand.

A delightful pictorial history.......2001-12-25
This is a lovely book chockablock full of photographs dating from 1853 which depict life in this coastal village on Long Island. For me the devastation of the Hurricane of 1938 provides some of the most dramatic photos, while the chaos of the war years provides a great deal of the drama. Most interesting is historian Lucinda Mayo's account of the only other terrorist attack on the American mainland besides the horrors of Sept. 11, 2001. On the morning of June 13, 1942 eight German sabateurs landed in a submarine on Amagansett beach with the intention of moving inland and attacking the Tennesee Valley hydroelectric plants. Fortunately, they were caught by authorities before they could fulfil their nefarious plans.
Carton Kelsey's voluminous research and Lucinda Mayo's crisp writing style make this book one that will stay on my shelf for a long, long while. A great read!
Book Description
On Halloween day, Hank comes to school dressed as a table in an Italian restaurant. Nick McKelty, the resident school bully (dressed in a total blood-and-guts costume), thinks Hank's costume is wimpy and that Hank wouldn't know how to be scary and gross if his life depended on it! So Hank decides to create the scariest haunted house ever, and plans to invite McKelty over and show him what scary really is. The only problem is that Hank's dog, Cheerio, is scared of Hank's haunted house. So scared, in fact, that when Hank tries to find him, he's nowhere in sight! Have Hank's Halloween hijinks gone too far?

Book Description
Mark Billingham's Sleepyhead was called "an exceptional debut" by George Pelecanos, lauded for its "strong ... display of macabre creativity" by the New York Times, and singled out by USA Today as featuring "some of the creepiest serial killers to be found between the pages of a book." Now Billingham returns with Scaredy Cat.
It was a calculated, vicious murder. The killer selected his victim at Euston station, followed her home on the tube, and then strangled her to death in front of her child. At the same time the dead woman is found, a second body is discovered at the back of King's Cross station -- killed in identical fashion. It is a grisly coincidence that eerily echoes the murders of two other women, both stabbed to death months before on the same day.
Introduced in Sleepyhead, Detective Inspector Tom Thorne sees the link and comes to the horrifying conclusion that it is not one serial killer the police are up against: it is two of them. Now each time a body is found, Thorne must live with the knowledge that somewhere out there is a second victim, waiting to be discovered. But while the methods might be the same, the killers are very different -- one submissive and terrified, the other ruthless and in control. To stop them both, Thorne must catch a man whose need to manipulate is as great as his need to kill; a man who will threaten those closest to Thorne himself; a man who will show him that the ability to inspire terror is the deadliest weapon of all.
Customer Reviews:
Gripping.......2007-07-31
My first Billingham thriller and I was impressed. It's fast paced and keeps you guessing right up until the last chapters.
A fascinating and creepy character study of childhood relationships and I found the childhood experiences described very believable as to how a killer can be created.
I'll definitely look out for more thrillers by this author.
Not scary, but worth buying.......2007-06-01
Mark Billingham is a very good writer, of that there can be little doubt. I have to admit, however, that Scaredy Cat proved ultimately disappointing. The story line concerns a pair of serial killers whose links go back to their schooldays - but they are not an equal pair. One leads, the other follows. Meanwhile we have Billingham's erstwhile hero DI Tom Thorne, who often comes across as burned out and who occasionally questions his commitment to his career as a detective, such are the demands it brings. I read Lazy Bones some time ago, and found that to be a more 'scary' book than this, despite the references to what the badder of the two baddies plans to do in the slightly hyped-up finale in Scaredy Cat. This book is well written in its detail, and indeed is worth buying, but whereas I was expecting to give it 5 stars when I had finished 90% of the story, the slightly anti-climactic ending led me to trim that rating by one. I really was expecting a shocking ending, but it didn't happen for me. I did admire the better character development in this novel (compared to Lazy Bones) and ended up with a much better understanding of what's going on in Thorne's head - something that Billingham failed to do in the other story. In particular I felt I learned something about life as a detective, both the professional and private, and I reckon that the author has done very thorough research in this field in order to convey the stresses and emotions of his characters so well. As for what motivates his villains to do what they do, this was rather less well explained, even though he devoted considerable time in attempting to do so. I guess it's easier to typecast detectives as opposed to serial killers, but it's a shame because it would be a great read if Billingham had an equal knowledge of the mindsets of both the goodies AND the baddies.

Very readable.......2006-02-05
Mark Billingham is a young writer on the way up. For someone who is used to the US writers and the way they write, I find that Billingham adds the psychological element to his books far more than most US writers.
This book features Tom Thorne (the regular lead character in Billingham's works) and as usual, Thorne is chasing a killer and battling his own personal demons.
The killers in this book are extra nasty and make sure to read the first chapter as the author is like Mo Hayder, has the ability to really grab you in the first few pages. No slow building of drama with this guy.
Thorne in Your Side.......2005-12-03
Mark Billingham is a former actor and stand-up comedian whose first crime novel - "Sleepyhead" - was published in 2001. "Scaredy Cat" is his second novel and, like his first, also features DI Tom Thorne as its central character. It won the 2003 Sherlock Award, and was also nominated for the CWA Golden Dagger Award. In 2005, he won the Theakston's Old Peculiar Crime Novel of the Year Award for "Lazy Bones".
(...)
Overall, I enjoyed this book quite a bit - it was very easily read and Thorne reminded me a little of Harry Bosch, Michael Connelly's LAPD investigator. However, the mood in "Scaredy Cat" seems a little lighter than in anything I've read by Connelly. I would possibly suggest reading Billingham's books in order - there were a few nods to the events of "Sleepyhead", the first book to feature Thorne. While I haven't read it just yet - though I do plan to - I have the impression that Billingham gave away a little more about that book than I would've liked. Recommended all the same.
A Top Notch Thriller.......2005-08-06
An interesting twist from a mystery. From the beginning, you know "who done it", but you have no idea who that person has become. The final unveiling came as a surprise, and I'm usually able to figure out such "twists" before they are revealed (although he was on my list of suspects).
The lead character, DI Tom Thorne, will remind readers of Rebus (Ian Rankin) and Banks (Peter Robinson), but there are enough differences to set him apart and make him interesting. All in all, a great read. I look forward to Billingham's follow-ups.

Great for early readers.......2006-10-14
Tiger is sooo......scared of everything. This book gently shows Tiger's fears of many things. This is a very gentle book, not too scarey. This book is also great for early reading, easy too read, repeating words. Be prepared to read and listen to this book many times. This book also is great for teaching compassion. Tiger over comes his fears by helping a baby mouse. This book is very cute. If you are looking for a little more reading for a beginner reading and staying on the theme of compassion. I love the "Good night, Good Knight" books. This book has more reading per page, but a lot of repeating words and teaches compassion for others.
My first book.......2006-03-06
I am 18 years old, and this book was the book I learned how to read with when I was 4 years old!!! It was my absolute favorite book and I would recommend it to any parent looking for a cute book for their child!
A perfect book for beginning readers!.......2000-09-11
This is a heart-warming story of a kitten with many fears. He overcomes his fears in the story because of his compassion for a smaller, more needy animal than himself. Through repetition in the text beginning and emerging young readers will find this a delightful, easy-to-read story. My daughter has read it so many times the cover and pages are worn with love! It was the first story she mastered reading cover to cover.

When little `scaredy cat' Annie disappears, it's another baffling case for detectives Wizard, Tubby, Skinny, and Snitch. `One of the funniest of the author's easy-to-read stories about the youthful `private eyes.'' BL.
Customer Reviews:
Great story for beginning readers.......2005-07-07
The Case of the Scaredy Cats tells the story of what happens when a group of girls try to take over the boys' clubhouse. The boys are upset because the clubhouse is for boys only so they make signs that have mean sayings about the girls. The girls get angry and beat up the boys until they run and hide. However, then the girls realize that the youngest of them, Annie, is missing and they start crying. Hearing this, the boys come out from hiding, and they all work together to find Annie.
This book would be appropriate for ages 6 and 7. The simple language is ideal for children developing reading skills. In addition, children in this age group who are becoming curious about gender differences will enjoy hearing about how the boys and girls worked together in the end to overcome those differences. I would recommend this book be read for enjoyment by children learning to read. The simple drawings do a nice job of illustrating what is happening in the text. The expressions on the children's faces are amusing and appropriately reflect the emotions of the characters.
The Case of the Scaredy Cats by Crosby Bonsall.......2001-02-22
Crosby Bonsall has done it again with her "Wizard Gang". Her style of writing captures the imagination and friendship of all the children who read her books. This book especially highlights the differences between the boys and girls and how children resolve those differences. The second graders couldn't put the book down!!!! We laughed and had fun reading this remarkable book.

scaredy cat.......2005-08-13
This was a interesting book about a little boy and his brother.
It was funny and made me laugh. The older brother was more scared then the little brother.
Book Description
This book helps children to realize much of what they fear is a product of their imagination. Having more freedom can be frightening, but it has its rewards. Two little kittens are allowed to go to the nearby town for the first time. They are going to buy a stamp and mail a letter. On the way they worry about bad things happening to them. "What if we lose the money?" "What if it gets stolen?" "What if a giant troll cat jumps from the bridge?" "What if we lose the letter in the woods?" and so on and so on...Although they frighten themselves, they keep going until they get to the post office. Oh No! The post office is closed. However, grandmother cat steps off the bus and talks to them, only to find that the letter was for her. The little scaredy cats lead her home, they know the way, and tell grandma of their adventures.
Customer Reviews:
LOVE IT!!! .......2007-03-12
I think this is one of Audrey Wood's best books. The little kitty cats are given a letter by Mama cat to take to town to the post office. As they set off on their first journey without Mama, they begin "to wonder and worry" about scarey, woeful, terrible things..." Truly adorable and fun to read. I must have read it 20x to my 3 year old in the first 24 hours of owning it. Then my daughter took the book and started "reading" it on her own when I couldn't sit with her. I just love this book, and so does my little girl. Really, cute and emotionally expressive illustrations. Don't hesitate to buy this one. Get the hardcover Child's Play Library edition if you can.

Farfetched, yet good........2000-04-20
The book There's a Shark in the Swimming pool is an okay book. I would recommend this book for 3-4 graders. The reason why I gave it a four is because it is really farfetched, I mean, how many pools are there with sharks in them? Do not buy this book without checking it out from a library and reading it first.
