Book Description

Chung Mae is the fashion expert of the farming village of Kizuldah, Karzistan. As such, she represents the villagers' con-nection to the culture of the wider world beyond their fields. But Mae's role is about to change drastically. The Net, and unlimited information, has finally come to Kizuldah, and it's soon to be followed by Air, a new communication technology that will connect everyone, everywhere, without wires or computers. But the initial test of Air is a disaster; people are killed by the shock, and Mae ends up imprinted with the memories of a dying old woman. Realizing the changes the future will bring to Kizuldah, Mae struggles to lead her people to prepare themselves, while preserving the values that have always held the village together.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Character driven Sci-Fi in a near future. Well worth the read........2007-04-02

Mae is the "Fashion Expert" of a remote village in Central Asia. For her, and the village, life as they know it will be forever changed after a disastrous test of a new form of "internet" called Air, and this is the story of how they all learn to cope with the coming new world.

If you like your Sci-Fi full of action and battles then this book will not appeal to you. Instead you are given a cast of characters who you gradually come to care about. The book starts a little slow till the test of Air occurs and then it settles into itself and easily keeps your attention till the end.

I was glad I read this novel. Its one that'd I'd heard from other people was good - and I was happy to find that the grapevine was right in this case. This is different from most other Sci-Fi novels I've read. It's about people - and in this case the have-nots of society and how a radical change of technology affects their lives. Deprived and uneducated does not necessarily mean stupid and its something that the developers of technology ignore at their peril as this novel clearly illustrates.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Elegant, Enigmatic.......2007-02-06

This is a beautiful, elegant and enigmatic story. Its heroine is Chong Mae, a self-styled fashion consultant in what may be the remotest village in Kyrgyzstan in the year 2020. The book is concerned with what happens to Mae and the other people in her village when an attempt is made to test a new form of communications system, Air, which will link all of the people in the world in a kind of mental internet.

Although Air is the speculative fiction device that seems to drive the novel, the book is really about sociological phenomena including social organization, the place of the individual in society, the acceptance and rejection of technological change, rural versus urban society, the elements in society that are first to capitalize on technological change, and the role of early adapters. That broad range sounds quite daunting. But when told from the perspective of Mae, it is also about more basic human elements like family, love, friendship and responsibility.

By incorporating forces unleashed by the test of Air, we are also able to examine the relationship of the past to the present and the present to the future.

With all these elements one might expect Air to be a gigantic sprawling novel, but in fact it operates on an intimate scale, following Mae around while she performs her daily activities, aimed at furthering her own life as well as preparing her village for inevitable technological change. Some of the elements are exceedingly simple and commonplace, yet reflect larger social forces. For example, Mae is attuned to the traditional activities of her village, and, as her vision of the world becomes expanded, can see how there might be a market for the decorative collars handmade by the women in her village. She ends up in internet contact with a fashionista in New York, who helps to make the collars a cutting-edge fashion and political statement. At the same time, Mae develops a relationship with her New York contact that will eventually allow one of her neighbors to preserve her oppositional beliefs to the national government. And yet, this political scale develops in an organic way so naturally from village life that one scarcely notices the transition to national politics.

Two elements make the book enigmatic. The first is the appearance of unexpected phenomena that we might find easier to accept in a more technologically developed world at a later date. The second is the author's reason for introducing these phenomena. One expects that they have some purpose in the author's scheme, especially since the author explores a society substantially different from the reader's, to illuminate our understanding. And yet the author is so skillful in his writing that even though we may not immediately understand his purpose, we accept the phenomena. Finally, even the secondary title "Have Not Have" remains an enigma.

Don't read this book if you are looking for high adventure amidst titanic events. But if you are looking for an examination of the life of a dynamic individual in a small society, you are sure to enjoy this book.

1 out of 5 stars Didnt get it.......2006-09-23

This book started out entertaining but then it really dragged on.

Maybe I didnt understand something, but I felt the second half of the book was really a waste of my time. I had a really hard time finishing it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2006-03-31

Air is not only one of the best sci-fi novels I have read in a long time, but one of the best novels as well. Ryman's characters are portrayed so convincingly, and their world is so vivid that the reader is completely enveloped in their strange and all-too-human story. It's a book that I finished with great regret, for I will never be able to visit a world like this again, and that's what makes a great piece of fiction. Chung Mae takes her place among fiction's great heroines. A superb and satisfying read with every page. I simply loved it.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable book.......2006-01-26

Air is a brilliantly conceived book that- at its very core- is a damning indictment of the "civilized" world's immoral disregard of cultures considered "primitive" and therefore inferior, even expendable. At the same time, it's also a novel about hope, and the remarkable resiliency of the human spirit. These messages shine brightly together in Ryman's clever story, where a Karzistan village- filled with people living meaningful, dignified lives in their own way- is disrupted and change forever when the villagers are selected as guinea pigs in an ill-fated United Nations experiment involving Air, a quantum device intended to transmit a flood of worldwide information directly into their targeted brains- in essence, "westernizing" them in an instantaneous and overwhelming fashion. The result is chaos for the villagers, even death, and the beginning of a strange, almost magical journey for Chung Mae, a village elder who becomes a seer of sorts, and a warrior for survival of her people. Although very different from those of us in the west, Ryman's characters are not only believable, but universal and immediately familiar. As intriguing as the book's premise is, it's these sharply defined characters that keep the pages turning, as we weep for what they lost forever and cheer them on to victory. I can't recommend this book highly enough, especially for those who "hate" science fiction because they have no idea what it's capable of. Air will change their minds.

Another science fiction novel that touches on the themes of dignity and resiliency of the human spirit is An Audience for Einstein, an intelligent young adult title. I'm far too old to wear that young adult label myself, but still found it enjoyable and highly worthwhile.

From the supplier: A study was conducted, using both cross-sectional and time-series techniques, to investigate whether income convergence in the US from 1929-94 was accompanied by air pollutant emission convergence. The study analyzes data on two indicators of environmental quality, namely emissions of sulfur dioxides and nitrogen oxides. Some evidence from unit root tests show that per capita emissions of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxides have conditionally converged across the regions.

                    Product Description

Mr. Darcy's Diary presents the story of the unlikely courtship of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy from Darcy's point of view--sharing his innermost thoughts and feelings. This graceful imagining and sequel to Price and Prejudice explains Darcy s moodiness and the difficulties of his reluctant relationship as he struggles to avoid falling in love with Miss Bennett. Though seemingly stiff and stubborn at times, Darcy s words prove him also to be quite devoted and endearing qualities that eventually win over Miss Bennett s heart. This continuation of a classic romantic novel is charming and elegant, much like Darcy himself.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-28

I absolutely loved this book. It was not particularly deep and it was very easy reading, but as I am in college, I get enough heavy stuff. It came at a perfect time and I enjoyed reading it immensely. I also gave it to my roommate to read and she loved it too, even though she does not particularly like Pride and Prejudice. The only thing I would say about it is that you had better have read the original before this book, or it won't make sense. I give it two thumbs up!

                    4 out of 5 stars Too short..........2007-09-07

This was a very quick read and I did enjoy it, however it was a little too short. I also had quite a bit of the original dialogue as quotes and for the size of this book I thought it was too much. I did like the idea though and this gives some insight into Mr. Darcy's perspective of all the events plus a little idea of what could have happened after the P&P ends. Enjoyable read but not the best sequel out there.

                    5 out of 5 stars Mr. Darcy's Diary.......2007-09-05

Amanda Grange really kept the same language and tone that Jane Austen used in the original story of Pride & Prejudice. She retold the same story from Darcy's point of view. I thought she did an excellent job.

I enjoyed how she added some witty examples of their married life together at the end. Even with having to deal with all the crazies from both of their families, I think they are going to make it.

                    4 out of 5 stars Fitzwilliam Darcy---humanized!.......2007-09-05

The aspect of this novel by Amanda Grange which pleases me most is that she has been successful in turning Fitzwilliam Darcy into a flesh and blood man. Since Pride and Prejudice is essentially written from Elizabeth Bennet's point of view, at times I want an explanation of what Darcy is thinking. This book managed to do that for me. Even knowing that these words, thoughts and ideas do not come from Jane Austen, I am still completely satisfied with thinking "my" Mr. Darcy would have been like this. He was arrogant, he did believe in his own self-importance, he did interfere in Bingley's life. But, he also learned from Elizabeth and Bingley and the situations he found himself in that he could change. He didn't need to stay so stiff and formal. He could actually learn to tease and be teased and the world as he knew it would still remain on its axis.

I found this book to be slow going at first. I really didn't think I was going to be able to accept this Darcy as the same one who lives in my imagination. But a strange thing happened as I continued to read. I began to really like this man. Amanda Grange had made him a true, real, loveable person for me. As most of the other reviewers have said, I also am a huge fan of the Jane Austen books. Ms Grange does not try to be Jane Austen. She tries to be herself, giving us her version of how she thinks Fitzwilliam Darcy might have responded to his situations. I applaud her effort and recommend this book as a worthwhile read.

This is just a little extra information in case you get confused (as I did). This book came out in Britain in 2005 in hardcover and was titled DARCY'S DIARY. It has a full head portrait of Darcy on the cover, quite interesting but maybe just a little too feminine for "my" Darcy. The paperback was published in 2007 and is titled MR. DARCY'S DIARY. I, of course, was not careful and managed to buy them both. The paperback has only a partial portrait, probably because the publisher discovered that each of us has our own mental picture of Fitzwilliam Darcy. Both books are identical in every way except as I have stated. Now, my advice is to just read and enjoy one copy or the other.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great reading!.......2007-08-16

I enjoyed this book for it kept me interested to a point that I "soaked it up" and finished it in a day but I kept reviewing the best parts I enjoyed most.

                    Book Description

Pride and Prejudice is the most popular romance of all time, and in this enjoyable retelling Amanda Grange allows us to see the events of Jane Austen's famous novel from Mr Darcy's point of view.

Scenes only hinted at in the original are here recorded in detail and brought to life as Darcy writes of his horror at discovering his sister's plans to elope with George Wickham, his efforts to separate Charles Bingley from Miss Jane Bennet and his disgust at having to arrange a marriage between George Wickham and Miss Lydia Bennet.

But, most satisfying of all, he discloses his feelings for Elizabeth. Darcy's Diary records the full story of their courtship, from initial hostility to their eventual love, before revealing a tantalizing glimpse of their early married life.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-12-25

This book is a really great addition to Pride and Prejudice, it's fun to see the whole thing the other way round. You can see what Darcy's thinking and feeling all the way through, how he's not really interested in Lizzy to begin with and then because she stands up to him he begins to take notice and before he knows where he is, he's in love with her. A bit like this book really, before you know what's happening, you can't put it down. You think, I'll just read a bit more, and then I'll just read a bot more. It's hard to get hold of it in hardback for some reason but now there's a paperback, only they've called it Mr Darcy's Diary, but you can find it if yuo click on Amanda Grange at the top of the page because it takes you to a list of all her books. I hope she writes a sequel, I'd like to know what happens next.

5 out of 5 stars well done! .......2006-11-22

What an insidious book this is! It just grabs you and sucks you right into it, so that you can't--or don't even want to--put it down for even one second. You just want to keep reading and reading and reading. Oh, my.

It is so easy to picture the Darcy and Elizabeth of the marvelous BBC/A&E production of ten years ago as you read Darcy's words. You wonder how this pompous stuffy prig ever managed to have even one friend, let alone the darling Charles Bingley. Darcy is the most disagreeable character imaginable until Lizzie takes him down several notches. Good for her!

When you first start reading this book, you tend to think, `oh, this is so simple,' but then before you quite know what's happened, you're part of the story, and it just won't let go. You ride along, sort of on Darcy's shoulder, watching as the action unfolds with the Bennet family and Wickham, the Lucases and Mr. Collins, Lady Catherine de Bourgh and her household, and Darcy's sister Georgiana and cousin FitzWilliam, plus of course, Bingley and his sisters. It's amazing! In the other versions (including the wonderful original) you see everything as it happens from your standpoint as an observer. First person is so very different, creating almost a `you are there!' situation.

You won't soon forget this Mr. Darcy. Of course, I've not yet forgotten the other one - Colin Firth as the premier Mr. Darcy of all time. It was amazing to hear that voice in my mind as I read his words and felt his inner pain when he tumbled from his lofty perch to join the rest of us mortals in his quest for the love of his life. Eventually, he's even willing to put up with Mrs. Bennet if only he can have his Lizzie.

Of course, true love wins out in the end. Hooray! Brava to Ms. Grange. This is a masterful concept, masterfully executed. I wouldn't mind a sequel, either.

5 out of 5 stars This is a PERFECT addition to Jane Austen's P&P.......2006-08-17

I read many spin-offs of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and this one is the GREATEST by far and I can hardly tell that its not Jane herself who wrote this. It is so Mr.Darcy!!! It took me 3 months to get this book ordered (its always out of stock, dunno why) but its worth every penny I spent!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but not as good as I was expecting.......2006-06-19

Based on the other really glowing reviews this book got, I was expecting much better. I would say it's worth about 30 dollars and no more. Because I couldn't get it and had to wait, I finally bought it used for three times what it was worth. I found it to be good, but not worth what I paid for it in my impatience.

There was an extreme amount of dialogue-lifting from the original, and while it was not unbearably awkward or forced, I was hoping for a little more invented dialogue. I also think some of the characters said things they would not have, disclosed information they would not have, etc. Most of the non-original Darcy/Elizabeth conversations are very well done and keep faithful to those characters. I was hoping for more "inner thoughts" though--like when Darcy was contemplating whether or not he should propose--and after he is rejected--but it just mentioned the event and moved on. Also, occasionally the characters found out information that I'm not sure they would have known--like why Ms. Bingley finds out the gossip of Hertfordshire when she's in London I have no idea.

I did very much enjoy the fact that it continued a couple months past the wedding. It had a good balance of "sense and sensibility" for Darcy's character and did not include trashy graphic details about their relationship. It was also neat to see all the characters together at Christmas in the end, although I'm just not so sure that all of those people would have been together at Pemberley so soon after their wedding. I will definitely compliment Ms. Grange for researching the dates and chronology of the events very well. The dates were very true to the original and the chronology was precise.

I would say this book is good, but not superb. For a superb book, read the Pamela Aidan series, Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman. They are out of this world. And if you've read those, get "The Diary of Henry Fitzwilliam Darcy" by Marjorie Fasman. It includes more of Darcy's inner thoughts and more invented scenes. It also continues about a year after the wedding. I would rate Fasman's book slightly above this one, on account of creativity.

I sent this calendar to my daughter & grandson without a really good idea what it was like, since there is only one little picture of it online. Later I saw it at their house, and participated in selecting the sticker of the day. As I had hoped, the "village" was empty of anything but snow and the bare outline of each house. My 3-year-old grandson was very successful at putting each sticker within its outline, and took great satisfaction in doing so.

5 out of 5 stars Fun For All Ages.......2006-01-04

I received this advent calendar as a gift and enjoyed using it this Advent season. Both I and my sister, who is quite younger than I am, enjoyed using it, so it is great for all ages. It is exciting to see the village grow each day. The stickers are made well, and blend into the beautifully detailed background perfectly. After Christmas was over, it was easy to peel the stickers off to put them back on the sticker sheet to use for next year. My only slight complaint is that some of the stickers go across the crease of the background, and will get bent if you don't keep the background open all the time. But the scene is so pretty that you probably wouldn't want to close it anyway.

Detailed depictions of a serene water lily fairy, a New England Aster fairy with her butterfly friend, an elegant yellow iris fairy, a vibrant trumpet honeysuckle fairy, a young rhododendron fairy, and a playful morning glory fairy. As with all Dover books, great value.

It looks like you either love this book or hate it. I happened to love it. I always thought that Darcy's parents must have been distant, unavailable, or just pretty messed up themselves to produce Darcy. He's so smart, gifted, handsome but socially tied in knots. This book explores some of his childhood, his admiration of Elizabeth, and eventually their marriage. This book protrays Darcy as a lonely kid starved for affection, both emotionally and physically. He is a pretty "physical" guy here, but without most of the details. It is a "diary" but not in an unbelievable way. I thought the author did a charming job of protraying his diary as a trusted friend.

4 out of 5 stars Fun but fluffy read.......2007-07-11

I actually enjoyed this book a lot once I got passed some of my inital irks. I didn't like the way the author decided to make Mr. Darcy's parents mean and cold. And I also didn't care for the way she wrote the relationship between Darcy and Georgianna. It too seemed distant and cold. In the end those changes helped tie the story together and explain Darcy and Georgianna's charachters. I did have to get over some of the childish statements Darcy makes in his diary. They seemed like something that would come from Bingley not Darcy. All in all I did enjoy it. She did a great job and spent a good amount of time to grow and nuture the romance between E and D, which is of course the most important part of the story. I also like that she showed us a different and sensitive Darcy I don't think all the other P&P sequal writters do. Well done!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the money--4.5 stars.......2006-06-19

When I bought this book years ago, I read it again and again. It was one of the few really good parallels out then, and I enjoyed it very much. I would definitely argue that it was worth what it costs on Amazon. You get a lot for your money. If you skip straight to when he comes into Hertfordshire, it's much better. I personally prefer to ignore the presumptions Ms. Fasman makes about Darcy and Ms. Reynolds, his "grande amour" and Professor G. It totally ruined my perception of Darcy, and I can't imagine him having those experiences. The dates of the events are not entirely correct, and some of the events do not happen in the correct order, but the insight is enjoyable. This book starts when he is about ten years old and continues until about a year after his wedding. It alludes to the sexual aspect of their relationship without being disgustingly graphical. I really liked the fact that it includes a significant amout of events during the courtship period, which is missing in other good parallels. I also strongly, strongly recommend the Pamela Aidan trilogy. Darcy's Diary by Amanda Grange is also good. (although I think this one is a little better) As others have said, the style is a little more juvenile than I think Darcy would have been, but it's 'jucier' than Darcy's Diary. If you enjoy reading Darcy's point of view, this one's a must.

                    5 out of 5 stars Inside Mr. Darcy's head..........2006-01-15

I was hesitant at first, but as soon as I opened this novel, I was delighted with the writing style and story I was reading. The author obviously adored Colin Firth as Darcy *who was the writer's inspiration, and it shows throughout the novel.

Anyone who has read the original Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen will not be dissapointed. Unlike other sequels and Austen immitations, this one stood out as a separate peice of writing, apart from the original novel.

2 out of 5 stars Not Fitzwilliam Darcy.......2003-12-17

HENRY Fitzwilliam Darcy. I don't understand the name change, for one. My real major complaint is that Darcy's tone from childhood into manhood scarcley changed at all. He sounds immature even when he writes about falling in love, his struggles, his rejected proposal and his path to acceptance. The disparity between Darcy's letter to Elizabeth and his diary entries is so distant. It's understandable that he was more formal in his letter, but again, the tone is not Darcy's.

If you don't take it too seriously, you may find it funny and ridiculous. If this diary reveals the 'essentials' of Mr. Darcy, then Mrs. Elizabeth Darcy may not check herself. Like her father before her, she will find her spouse amusing and will laugh at him!
