Author Wilson Rawls spent his boyhood much like the character of this book, Billy Colman, roaming the Ozarks of northeastern Oklahoma with his bluetick hound. A straightforward, shoot-from-the-hip storyteller with a searingly honest voice, Rawls is well-loved for this powerful 1961 classic and the award-winning novel Summer of the Monkeys. In Where the Red Fern Grows, Billy and his precious coonhound pups romp relentlessly through the Ozarks, trying to "tree" the elusive raccoon. In time, the inseparable trio wins the coveted gold cup in the annual coon-hunt contest, captures the wily ghost coon, and bravely fights with a mountain lion. When the victory over the mountain lion turns to tragedy, Billy grieves, but learns the beautiful old Native American legend of the sacred red fern that grows over the graves of his dogs. This unforgettable classic belongs on every child's bookshelf. (Ages 9 and up)

Exciting ending, boring beginning.......2007-10-04
I found the beginning of this book to be quite boring. It felt like the same thing happened in practically every chapter up to about page one hundred. He would hunt, get in danger, and get out of it. Same thing every time. After that, however, it got better. More things happened like him getting in the competition, and the tragic ending. Overall it was a decent book.
Most heartbreaking ending ever........2007-08-16
This book was great until the end. I read it as a kid in the 5th grade and enjoyed the story and the journey of the kid earning money for the dogs and his bond with them.
But, the ending is horrible. You will cry, you will be angry, and you will feel betrayed by this book forever. My husband and I still can't beleive how depressing the end is.
If you must read this stop before the last couple of chapters. Then imagine the dogs living a happy long life by the fireplace.
Where the Red Fern Grows.......2007-08-06
This book is great for anyone who has ever lost a dear pet. This novel explores the adventures of a boy and his dogs; dogs which he remembers well into adulthood. The story is a real tear-jerker.
Where The Red Fern Grows.......2007-07-09
Everyone who has ever had a faithful dog should read Billy's story at least once in his or her lifetime. It's an ageless tale that touches the heart and mind.
Ten-year old Billy lived in the Ozark Mountains with his parents and three younger sisters. The family was extremely poor, as were most of their neighbors at that time, and could only afford the bare necessities of life. Billy's dream of having a pair of coonhounds of his own seemed to be only that until he found a resourceful way to earn the money for himself.
For two long years, Billy trapped and sold animal pelts until he had finally saved enough money to finance his lifelong dream. With his grandfather's help, he ordered two pups and then walked several miles to bring them home. That's when the real adventures began.
If the story is beginning to sound familiar, it should. "Where the Red Fern Grows" by Wilson Rawls is an unforgettable classic that has been enjoyed for generations.
So where does the red fern come into the story? You'll just have to read it for yourself, and don't be surprised if you hear the distant bawling of a couple of dogs who have tree'd a `coon each time you open the book.
It's just Little Ann and Old Dan, for they've never really left these Ozark hills.
Bought it for my son after reading it myself in my younger days........2007-06-08
Maybe only country boys can appreciate it, but I thought it was a simple, yet great story, timeless.

Attention All Dog Lovers.......2003-09-19
Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls is a story about a boy living in the Ozark Mountains and his desire to have two hound dogs. This longing was complicated by the fact that his family were too poor to buy the dogs. The story that follows is one of adventure and excitement.
I loved this book because of the friendship between the boy and his dogs. When I was reading it I felt like I was the Billy, the main character. I read it in 3 days and then felt sad that it was all over. All dog lovers should read this book.
Wilson Rawls taught me through this book not to give up when circumstances look impossible.

After I read this book, I couldn't believe it. After all the exciting chapters, it has to end up in a sad way when the dogs die. Its funny how that all stories don't end in with a happy ending. I loved this book even after I read it ten times. Thats how good it really is!!! Its just unbelieveable how great this story of a boy and his two dogs. So far, this is my favorite book I've read so far. But I'm still looking forward to reading Wilson Rawls latest book. But I'll always remember Were The Red Fern Grows!!!

This book evokes feelings that you never knew you had and shows the true relationship between human and animal that not many people understand. It takes a special kind of person and a special kind of animal to have a relationship like the one in this book. The most extraordinary book I have ever read. It has remained my favorite since I first read it many years ago in fourth grade.

Where the Red Fern Grows is a beautiful story. The story has excellent descriptions. The Ozarks seem like a beautiful place to live. Where the Red Fern Grows.......2003-11-14
This book, like many of my favorites, I first read as a child. It touched me deeply then and I still enjoy reading it now and again as an adult. The author did an amazing job of weaving the characters and story into a very heartwarming lesson of family and gratitude for the people and things in life that make it all worth living. I will purchase this book for my 8 year old son this Christmas and recommend it as a great book to read with your children as a forum for teaching thankfulness and that family is the most precious gift of all.
A book that realy hits home for me.......2003-05-31
I first read Where The Red Fern Grows when I was 13 years old. I had seen the movie on several occasions, but it wasnt untill the sad death of my own Old Dan that I felt that I just had to read the book. Like the Coleman family, mine was very poor living in the dried up south east Texas oil fields. Many was the time that My only companion was my dog Old Dan. Many was the time that the only activities there were for me to do was going exploring through the woods that surrounded our home for miles and miles. I would find it hard to believe that anyone cant find some part of this story to relate to. Before I read Where The Red Fern Grows, I had never read a book in my life. Not only did I discover a wonderful story that I was almost living out myself, but also I discovered a massive love for reading. All I can say is that you are selling yourself short if you dont read this story. I think I'll go pick up my copy and read it again.

A triumph.......2006-07-10
One of my real favorites. Poor "Paris" and Donald Ross !!
A must for the collector.
"Please help me get rid of my husband!".......2005-01-19
This classic Poirot novel(alternative title- "13 at Dinner")is a good, quick read when you're in the mood for a mystery.
What I particularly liked about the story, is that it takes you for a spin. At first it all seemed so obvious I got a little annoyed. And although it is all so obviously simple in the end, Christie does a wonderful job at making the reader, as well as her detective hero, believe otherwise. I also liked this one because it is narrated by Poirot's trusty sidekick, Captain Hastings(Christie's version of Dr. Watson)who ordinary man that he is, proves invaluable to Poirot, and ultimately is the one person who can help him.
I Strongly recommend to any Christie fan, or anyone who just likes a good mystery now and then.
Classic whodunit from Master -- fun short mystery read !.......2004-09-28
Also entitled "Thirteen at Dinner", this mystery novel from the early 1930's (!) is a Christie classic in her Hercule Poirot series. The plot engages the reader quickly when Lord Edgware is bumped off. All clues certainly point to actress Jane Wilkinson (Lady Edgware), who has been overheard at dinner (for 13) wishing death for her husband, from whom she wants a not forthcoming divorce. However, an airtight alibi rules out Wilkinson, and so we're off to the races as both Poirot, who the actress had hired to "persuade" the Lord for a divorce, and the cops, in the form of Inspector Japp (who interestingly does legwork for Poirot throughout the story and serves as an amusing foil), chase an overabundance of clues!
Soon a second murder, and later a third, add to both the complexities of the case as well as Poirot's chagrin -- an obvious villain is not forthcoming. We readers are probably no better off, as we have as much trouble as Poirot's perpetual sidekick (and narrator) Capt. Hastings does unraveling all the characters and their testimonies. But of course, our hero rises to the occasion in the end and spells out for us clear as a bell what might have been right in front of our eyes.
Part of the beauty of these novels is the rather straightforward movement of the plot. While Christie might be accused of "economy of words", we still get enough character description and involvement to care about the principals and the resolution of the case. While no doubt this story send us down many wrong paths with the numerous red herrings at hand, the eventual outcome, followed by an entertaining afterword by one of the characters, is most satisfying. Charming chapter titles only add to the appeal of the author's timeless writing; and the 200 pages or so pass by quite crisply. Enjoy!
...and makes Poirot work the little grey cells very hard.......2004-02-01
Poirot and Hastings are enjoying an evening at the theater, watching the newest darling of the stage and her one-woman show of impersonations. Soon afterwards Poirot is approached by another famous actress, Jane Wilkinson, for help with a small problem, she would like to be rid of her husband, Lord Edgware. If Poirot could perhaps convince the gentleman to finally consent to a divorce it would be greatly appreciated otherwise she just might have to kill Lord Edgware herself! Poirot reluctantly agrees to take on this uncharacteristic task (perhaps Hastings is not the only one with a weakness for a beautiful woman!) and finds that the gentleman is quite ready to divorce his wife. All is well until Lord Edgware is murdered.
Poirot begins to ferret out the murderer and soon discovers that there were many who would like to see Lord Edgware dead. The detective is lead down many blind alleys until a chance remark leads him to the truth.
This was an immensely popular book when it was first published in 1933 and has held up quite well in the intervening 70 years. It is interesting to read this book and the one following, WHY DIDN'T THEY ASK EVANS? to see how Christie could take a simple phrase and turn it into two totally different stories.
Twists and Turns.......2003-12-23
Lord Edgware Dies is a blunt, accurate title but that is only the beginning. Before the mystery is complete, a couple of more people will die in one of Agatha Christie's most interesting early novels. In addition to the larger than usual body count, the number of red herrings is tremondous, bordering at times on outrageous. The solution, though, is perfectly Christie. I had a good suspicion of who was responsible but never did figure out the how, although it all comes together so smoothly you will wonder why you missed the obvious. Poirot is in fine form. There is also a joy in reading of the lords and ladies mixing with actors and actresses (two sets which are favourites of Christie and with which she writes so engagingly). A fine mystery.
