Book Description

Jack Whyte has written a lyrical epic, retelling the myths behind the boy who would become the Man Who Would Be King--Arthur Pendragon. He has shown us, as Diana Gabaldon said, "the bone beneath the flesh of legend." In his last book in this series, we witnessed the young king pull the sword from the stone and begin his journey to greatness. Now we reach the tale itself-how the most shining court in history was made.

Clothar is a young man of promise. He has been sent from the wreckage of Gaul to one of the few schools remaining, where logic and rhetoric are taught along with battle techniques that will allow him to survive in the cruel new world where the veneer of civilization is held together by barbarism. He is sent by his mentor on a journey to aid another young man: Arthur Pendragon. He is a man who wants to replace barbarism with law, and keep those who work only for destruction at bay. He is seen, as the last great hope for all that is good.

Clothar is drawn to this man, and together they build a dream too perfect to last--and, with a special woman, they share a love that will nearly destroy them all...

The name of Clothar may be unknown to modern readers, for tales change in the telling through centuries. But any reader will surely know this heroic young man as well as they know the man who became his king. Hundreds of years later, chronicles call Clothar, the Lance Thrower, by a much more common name.

That of Lancelot.

2 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2007-08-01

Having devoured all Whyte's other books in the Camulod Chronicles series I looked forward to this with relish. I bought it ages ago and still have only got half way throught it. The magic has completely gone. Let's hope his latest book is back up to his earlier standards.

4 out of 5 stars This book is essential to the series.......2007-07-25

Wow! I don't think I've ever seen so many bad reviews of a Jack Whyte novel.

Those who think that this book was unessential to the series, think on this: Whyte is sticking as close as he can to the Legend, which in this case says that Lancelot was the most pious and humble of the knights, and the greatest. One reviewer complained about the religious portion and Germanicus. I didn't find that overwhelming or offensive at all. What Whyte is doing is demonstrating how Lancelot became so pious, but in a plausible way. He has done this in all the books so far.

What I liked the most about this one was the way Whyte showed Lancelot's humility. It did not come across contrived or fake in any way. That's hard to do.

So I'll finish the series in spite of the bad reviews for Eagle, and hope that it's not as horrible as Uther was.

4 out of 5 stars Where are these other reviewers coming from???!!!!.......2007-03-20

In my opinion, this book is an excellent addition to the series. I don't understand the complaints from the other reviewers. This book is set up just like all the others and likewise is just as good. It can be a stand alone book much in the same context as "Uther"; but it also brings us up to speed on parallel events that will soon intersect in Camelot. It introduces us to a new character, Clothar (Lancelot), and follows his story. Of course, like in most of the other books, the narrator's story is not directly about the main Arthurian Legend, but moves mostly in parallel only intersecting the direct Arthurian Legend in key places. But this has been much the way the entire series has run: 1st narrator is Publius Varrus but the Legend is Caius Britannicus and the establishing of Camelot, the second Narrator is Merlyn but the Legend is primarily Uther and Arthur, and now the narrator is Lancelot and the Legend is still Arthur. If you recognize that this has always been Whyte's style in this series, and have an open mind, you will enjoy the book. If you are expecting a detailed telling and resolution of the Arthurian legend then you may be disappointed. But then if that is the case you would have been disappointed all along.

3 out of 5 stars Good but pointless to the series.......2007-02-15

"The first move by an enemy ride to disengage and ride away caught my eye, and i drove him out of the saddle with a hard shot that skewered his cuirass between his shoulder blades."

The Lance Thrower by Jack Whyte is the 6th book in the Camulod Chronicles. It's a historical fiction about Clothar's early life, training, his part in his cousin Gunthar's war to take over his uncle Ban's kingdom and how he became King Arthur's knight. By itself it is an interesting read but it had too many pointless details and it digresses from the series. I would have preferred it to be more intertwined with the series but it was still an interesting book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action and adventure but doesn't mind pointless details.

1 out of 5 stars What a shame ..........2007-01-31

Too bad it's nowhere close to the quality of the previous books in this series. Disappointing, boring, with chapters of unnecessary information (in fact, most of the book was unnecessary) to the whole Chronicles. He also should have stuck to Merlyn's voice. And I understand the last book (Eagle) is even worse. Whyte was obviously just in a hurry to get done with it, and done poorly at that. A pity when up until The Lance Thrower it was a magnificent series. If this was as little effort as he was going to put in to the end of this, he should have quit with Arthur's crowning. BAD ... I'm not even going to buy the last book (and that's saying something as I loved the rest of the series). A betrayal to his fans, and does nothing for his reputation as a writer either.

5 out of 5 stars A Most Wonderful Book For St. Petersburg Visitors.......2006-07-27

I happened on this wonderful book by reading all the reviews written by one of its reviewers. It is small, light weight and so very easy to use. The pictures are beautiful. We went to St. Petersburg last December with the book in hand. Each night we decided where to go the next day. Planning is important because each museum is usually closed at least one day a week. Unfortunately the museums were so interesting, that we often stayed way longer than we planned to. We never would have gone to some of the museums had we not had this little book. We especially liked the maps showing the ocation of each museum in relation to the others. Because of this book, we will return to St. Petersburg in the off season and enjoy many more of its amazing little museums -- after all what better way is there to spend a cold December day?

        4 out of 5 stars Discovering St. Petersburg's 40 Unknown Treasures.......2004-09-02

As the founder of a company devoted to business and cultural travel to Russia, it pains me that so many tourists come to St. Petersburg for a day or two and only visit the Hermitage, Peterhof, and a ballet. Russia is like a Fabergé egg-a beautiful exterior with a hard-to-open but spectacular hidden interior. Among the little known gems in St. Petersburg are the Museum of Theatrical and Musical Arts, the Nabokov Museum (former residence of Vladimir Nabokov), the Russian Ethnographic Museum, the Rimskii-Korsakov Memorial Apartment-Museum, the History of Religion Museum (formerly the "Anti-Religion Museum), the recently-opened Museum of Toys, and the Museum of Russian Vodka. All these treasures and more are fondly catalogued in Cathy Giangrande's Saint Petersburg: Museums Palaces and Historic Collections (Museums).

To appreciate this book a traveler needs to understand the unintentional irony of the chapter titled "Also well worth a visit are ..." listing the Hermitage Museum, one of the world's premier cultural treasures (and the most popular tourist site in Russia). It makes a great companion to such guides as DK Eyewitness's St. Petersburg guidebook (far more sights and coverage of the Hermitage, but without lengthy descriptions of lesser-known museums).

Its small size makes this a "laptray book", but for the visitor in body or spirit to St. Petersburg is just as enthralling as a five pound coffee table book. One-to-four pages are devoted to each of the over 40 lesser known attractions in St. Petersburg. Each listing had a clear address, directions, phone and web site (if available).

Books like this will help St. Petersburg, and Russia, become one of the world's premier tourist destinations in the next 10 years. There are literally thousands of such treasures throughout Russia as these listed here, but few people know about them. Truly, this book will help anyone interested in truly discovering Russia.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding guidebook to St. Petersburg.......2003-09-01

I began reading Cathy Giandrande's little guide to St. Petersburg with a great deal of skepticism. As I kept exploring the book, all my doubts quickly disappeared. That alone came to me as a surprise. Unlike most Russians who still suffer from a mild identity disorder, Petersburgers have a strong sense of local patriotism and know what they are and what their city is about. From time to time, their patriotism mutates into a peculiar kind of city chauvinism. It is taken for granted that no temporary visitor, be he or she from Moscow or Paris, can know the city or truly appreciate it. I am no different. As a Petersburger, I would never think that an outsider, least a foreigner, least someone from a culture many Russians perceive as hostile and extremely russophobic, would be able to put together a concise guide to the lesser known museums and landmarks of the city and do it in such a low key, friendly and unbiased manner, that the final work is a joy to read and is more useful from any practical standpoint of city exploration than many far weightier and thicker "serious" guides.
Cathy Giangrande's St. Petersburg is a guide to the city museums and lesser-known landmarks. If the author "missed" any museums, then I have a feeling, that she excluded them deliberately because they are so obscure (like the Museum of Armed Forces Medical Academy) that almost no locals are aware of their existence. On the other hand, the guidebook contains information on some really obscure museums, such as the new private museum of toys.

The book is a journey of exploration and is a pleasure to read "as is" from cover to cover. Alternately, it can be used as a helpful reference manual.

The guidebook has its own share of minor irritants, such as the occasional misspelling of French and English words transliterated backwards, but they are not very significant.

The book is beautifully printed on high quality paper and is richly illustrated with color photographs. It contains a helpful map or rather an outline plan of the central part of the city, a schematic plan of St. Petersburg region, and a well-designed plan of St.Petersburg "Metro" (or the city's subway system). All museum and landmark entries include detailed address and contact information, and indicate the nearest subway or suburban train station.

Among all foreign languages guides and books on St. Petersburg, that I ever came across, this one is the only work that is worth translating into Russian. Even locals would find this book a great aid in exploring their own city.

5 out of 5 stars Book #4 in the Aurora Teagarden Mysteries.......2007-03-20

"The Julius House" by Charlaine Harris is the fourth book in her series about Aurora Teagarden. (Follows Real Murders: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Bk. 1, A Bone To Pick: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Book 2 and Three Bedrooms, One Corpse: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery) Roe is now happily engaged to Martin Bartell, but nothing is as it seems. Martin has just gifted Roe with the old Julius house as a wedding present, and she is happily planning on moving them in. Depite its history (the Julius family mysteriously vanished years ago), she finds it enchanting. She even finds no problem with letting a couple of Martin's friends live on the property. That is, until she finds out that they're her bodyguards. Besides dealing with her husband, Roe decides she wants to figure out what happened to the Julius family.

I enjoyed this book as much as I did the earlier ones. It did take me a bit to warm to Martin, but I've decided that he's just what Roe needs. And unlike "Three Bedrooms, One Corpse", I did not solve the mystery before Roe! Everytime I thought I had figured it out, something new would be revealed, and I'd have to rethink my whole theory.

I fully recommend this series! Next is Dead Over Heels: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Bk. 5, followed by Fool And His Honey: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Bk. 6, Last Scene Alive (Aurora Teagarden Mysteries), and Poppy Done To Death: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery, Bk. 8.

So Roe has found her dream house. She waste no time or money fixing it up just the way she wants it. Oh, but who do we have here? A couple, old friends of her fiance, have decided to rent the upstairs apartment. They have no furnature, no background, and seeming act like Roe's employees. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? Roe's fiance is no help either. Secrets abound in her new relationship. Of course, those are not the only problems Roe has to work out. What happened to the previous inhabitants of the Julius house? Roe and a new friend set off to find out.

4 out of 5 stars The Julius House-- a Lawrenceton Mystery Residence.......2003-05-20

Aurora Teagarden's fiance, Martin Bartell, gives her the deed to the Julius House as a wedding gift. The house has a dark history. Some six years before an entire family named Julius had disappeared from the residence leaving all of their belongings. Despite a careful investigation into their disppearance by the authorities no trace was ever found. Aurora decides that she is going to find the Julius family.

On the personal side, though, she is also finding out some things about her future husband that make her more than a bit uneasy. Then Martin tells her that he a friend from Vietnam who has lost his job in Florida and will be staying in their garage apartment. When she meets the Youngbloods she knows that Martin is not being completely open with her.

There's a satisfactory resolution of the story but as with many literary villains, much of the detail comes out only because the evil person, once immobilized, cannot keep their mouth shut. However, Harris has created a page turner as the focus moves from Aurora's less than idyllic personal life to the puzzle of what happened to the former owners of her home.

5 out of 5 stars Not as Good as Previous Books, But Still A Great Author!.......2003-03-20

The Julius House is the fourth book in the Aurora Teagarden series. Aurora "Roe" has finally recovered from her injuries incurred at the end of the last book and is happily engaged to Martin Bartell, her handsome, older, richer boyfriend. For her wedding gift, Martin buys her the Julius house, the perfect house for her. Many people think she is crazy for living there due to the sudden disappearance of the Julius family who used to live there. Roe doesn't worry about it in the slightest and concentrates on glorying in her happily engaged status. She loves being the bride instead of the bridesmaid and pushes any doubts about her soon-to-be-husband aside. When they return from their perfect honeymoon in England, Roe settles in to redecorate and get settled. She is surprised when Martin informs her that two of his friends are down on their luck and that they will be moving into the apartment over the garage. Still, Roe is in love and excited to meet some of Martin's friends and does her best to welcome them. She soon discovers, however, that they are really there to guard her. When pressured, Martin confesses that he is a gunrunner in South America and that he is always worried about retaliation. To take her mind off of this confession, Roe decides that she is going to find out what happened to the Julius family and drags her bodyguard along for the ride. She soon discovers that sometimes it is better to let secrets remain buried...

I admit that the whole Roe/Martin wedding was a little contrived, but Roe really has wanted to get married all of her life and is extremely flattered that such an attractive, wealthy gentleman would be in love with her. It was fun to see Roe's thought processes as she dealt with extreme changes and challenges in her new life. I quite enjoyed the whole Julius family subplot and, though the ending was a little bit too shocking, Roe's whole investigation was quite logical and shows how one determined person can often put clues together that other people missed. As with the her other books, Charlaine Harris offers the reader a host of interesting supporting characters, many amusing details about the mystery and a fun, fast read for those who enjoy this type of genre. I feel that Harris' other mystery series starring Lily Bard (Shakespeare set) is stronger and her Dead Until Dark series is cleverer, but anything that Harris writes is worth reading!

3 out of 5 stars Cozy with a dark side.......2000-06-27

In the fourth book of this series, Roe Teagarden marries her handsome businessman boyfriend, Martin Bartell. He buys her a house she has admired which once housed a family who mysteriously disappeared. During the course of the story, Roe discovers the mystery of the Julius family as well as some rather unsavory things about her husband. This book is not as fun as the earlier books of the series and her marriage seems contrived as Martin and Roe seem to have little in common other than a physical attraction.

        Customer Reviews:

        3 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2005-08-19

This is overall, a good read. The book gave me a different perspective of J.C. Watts and resulted in more respect for the former Congressman. My only complaint is the numerous football analogies: too many. It became overkill after a while and I was annoyed by his constant references to the game. Other than that, I enjoyed reading the book.

1 out of 5 stars Another example of dishonest conservatism.......2005-08-17

Watts, football player turned politician, indicates his obsession with racism and politics by trying to defend political conservatives as non-racist even when it's obvious that these were the same lunatics in both parties that allowed the racism wackiness to spiral out of control in the south back in the 1960s and still does today nationwide albeit more subtely. The only reason rural voters in his area ever kept the guy in office was because he was a corporate conservative who enjoyed the art of bait and switching voters on culture hot button issues such as guns and abortion all the while keeping the economic mess as silent as possible. Sorry Mr. Watts, but good conservatives would never have sucked up to your cultural bait and switch tricks if it weren't for political in-correctness. You know you're just a neoconservative radical and not a honest conservative and you're not fooling most African Americans anyway.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-08-03

I think that this book is a great book but always keep an open mind

        5 out of 5 stars Congressman's Watts Ideology.......2005-06-13

This is a very good book. Congressman's Watts sets the record straight and doesn't care how or what the "Black" liberals think of him. This is a man who served his country and did it with dignity and aided all Americans in moving closer to a united front. Congressman J.C. Watts caught a lot of flak from the Democratic liberals especially the "Black" liberals, never the less Congressman Watts still strived to change the office of politics during his tenure and did infact make a difference for all Americans while he served his country. let the record show that I'm a Black American and I encourage all Black Americans to read Congressman's J.C. Watts book. You will definitely be inspired and motivated by Congressman's Watts Ideology.

        5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Story!.......2004-07-20

This book changed my life and allowed me the courage to stand up for what I REALLY believe, despite popular opinion. JC Watts, Jr. is hugely courageous and open the doors for many conservative african americans who have elected to reject "victimization," and embrace true independence through education, hard-work, faith, and family.
